6. What Makes a Student Feel Vital? Links between Teacher-Student Relatedness and Teachers' Engaging Messages

Abstract

Recent studies suggest that teacher messages can affect students' well-being. Using a multilevel, variable, and person-centred approach, this study aimed to identify profiles of students according to their teachers' use of engaging messages and analyse the relation among these profiles and teacher-student relatedness and students' subjective vitality. A total of 1209 students participated in the study. At the student-level, profile analysis indicated the existence of four different profiles: the "few messages" profile, the "autonomous motivational appeals" profile, the "loss-framed messages" profile, and the "gain-framed messages" profile. At the teacher level, profile analysis indicated the existence of two profiles: the "variant" and the "invariant" profiles. Results showed that overall, at both levels of analysis, teachers' engaging messages related with teacher-student relatedness (either positively or negatively) with clear differences among profiles. Moreover, also at both levels of analysis, teacher-student relatedness related with students' subjective vitality. Main findings and implications for practice are discussed.

8. Creating a Positive Learning Environment in the Online Classroom with Flipgrid

Abstract

The pandemic has made it clearer than ever that health issues impact education and that schools play a key role in supporting the wellbeing of learners. As emotion and cognition are interconnected, educators should use educational strategies that generate positive emotions so that learning is associated with pleasure. The aim of this study was to investigate if a warm-up activity with Flipgrid could contribute to creating a positive learning environment in the online classroom in times of COVID-19. Flipgrid is a free platform that allows video-based asynchronous discussion. It fosters educator-student contact, cooperation among learners, active-learning techniques and student engagement. A total of 37 MA students participated in the study. Informants were selected by non-probabilistic sampling. The data collection strategies were observation during the Flipgrid warm-up activity, a Moodle survey, and the institution student satisfaction survey. Students' engagement was high and their attitude was mostly positive or neutral. The warm-up was highly rated in terms of creating a positive learning environment by the participants, and informants wrote positive remarks about their experience using the platform. The results suggest that a warm-up activity with Flipgrid is an effective educational strategy to generate positive emotions during the pandemic. Finally, the limitations of the study are addressed, and some directions for future research are proposed.

9. Augmented Reality in Education. A Scientific Mapping in Web of Science

Abstract

Augmented reality is a technology that is bringing great benefits in the educational field. This study focuses on knowing the performance and scientific production of augmented reality in the field of education. This research has been approached from a bibliometric perspective. A novel documentary analysis technique based on scientific mapping and co-word analysis has been used. We have worked with an analysis unit of 777 reported publications of Web of Science. The results reveal the language, knowledge areas, type of document, institutions, authors, sources of origin, countries and most cited articles on augmented reality in the entire educational field. In addition, it is shown that research on augmented reality has focused on teaching people to use this technology effectively, in the learning environments it generates, in its educational application, and in attending to the diversity of students.

22. Controlling style, relatedness and cohesion in university students: A six countries comparison

Abstract

The objective of this study was to test a multilevel model about the relationship between teacher's controlling style, the relatedness and group cohesion in students. In addition, the invariance of the hypothesized model was tested across six countries. The sample was composed of 3178 university students of both sexes, aged between 17 and 63, from six countries of the Iberian Peninsula and South America (Spain, Portugal, Mexico, Colombia, Chile and Brazil). At the group level, results of the multilevel structural equation model showed that the teacher's controlling style negatively predicts the relatedness, but does not predict the students' group cohesion significantly. At the individual level, the controlling teaching style does not predict the relatedness, but the relatedness positively predicts group cohesion. Multiple group comparison indicated that the hypothesized model could be considered invariant across six participating countries. Abstract

In this paper, we study the link between finite-dimensional Zinbiel algebras and combinatorial structures or (pseudo)digraphs determining which configurations are associated with those algebras. Some properties of Zinbiel algebras that can be read from their associated combinatorial structures are studied. We also analyze the isomorphism classes for each configuration associated with these algebras providing a new method to classify them and we compare our results with the current classifications of 2- and 3-dimensional Zinbiel algebras. We also obtain the 3-vertices combinatorial structures associated with such algebras. In order to complement the theoretical study, we have designed and performed the implementation of an algorithm which constructs and draws the (pseudo)digraph associated with a given Zinbiel algebra and, conversely, another procedure to test if a given combinatorial structure is associated with some Zinbiel algebra.

27. Actions and Achievements of Self-Regulated Learning in Personal Environments. Research on Students Participating in the Graduate Program in Preschool Education at the University of Granada

Abstract

This paper is intended to study the self-regulated learning (SRL) process in personal learning environments (PLEs) among students participating in the Graduate Program for Preschool Education at the University of Granada (Spain). The study is focused on self-regulatory actions carried out by students, and on their self-regulated learning achievements, during the phases of action and reflection of this process. A Likert scale questionnaire was applied to a random cluster sample of the population. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were performed based on the collected data, as were non-parametric correlation and analysis of variance tests. The results confirm the importance of individual learning in the self-regulated process, and highlight the importance of digital tools in all three phases of self-regulation. Furthermore, the results show that teachers' suggestions are related to the use of digital tools and recording of reflections on the learning process, and establish relationships between learning management tools and cognitive and metacognitive processes. The results also permit classification of students into three subgroups, based on their achievements. Analyses are consistent with the theory that explains the cyclical nature of self-regulated learning and the influence of social relationships on individual self-regulatory processes.

28. Testing Audiovisual Comprehension Tasks with Questions Embedded in Videos as Subtitles: A Pilot Multimethod Study

Abstract

Listening, watching, reading and writing simultaneously in a foreign language is very complex. This paper is part of wider research which explores the use of audiovisual comprehension questions imprinted in the video image in the form of subtitles and synchronized with the relevant fragments for the purpose of language learning and testing. Compared to viewings where the comprehension activity is available only on paper, this innovative methodology may provide some benefits. Among them, it could reduce the conflict in visual attention between watching the video and completing the task, by spatially and temporally approximating the questions and the relevant fragments. The technique is seen as especially beneficial for students with a low proficiency language level. The main objectives of this study were to investigate if embedded questions had an impact on SFL students' audiovisual comprehension test performance and to find out what examinees thought about them. A multimethod design (Morse, 2003) involving the sequential collection of three quantitative datasets was employed. A total of 41 learners of Spanish as a foreign language (SFL) participated in the study (22 in the control group and 19 in the experimental one). Informants were selected by non-probabilistic sampling. The results showed that imprinted questions did not have any effect on test performance. Test-takers' attitudes towards this methodology were positive. Globally, students in the experimental group agreed that the embedded questions helped them to complete the tasks. Furthermore, most of them were in favour of having the questions imprinted in the video in the audiovisual comprehension test of the final exam. These opinions are in line with those obtained in previous studies that looked into experts', SFL students' and SFL teachers' views about this methodology (Casañ Núñez, 2015a, 2016a, in press-b). On the whole, these studies suggest that this technique has potential benefits for FL learning and testing. Finally, the limitations of the study are discussed and some directions for future research are proposed.

43. The Effect of Passive Dehydration on Phase Angle and Body Composition: A Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis.

Abstract

Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a method used to estimate body composition, and it relies mainly on the body's water content. Insufficient body water can introduce bias to body composition scores. Purpose: To determine the effect of body weight loss elicited by passive dehydration on body composition scores, including phase angle (PhA). Methods: Twenty-five euhydrated apparently healthy and physically active men's (age = 22.6 ± 3.3 yr.; body mass = 76.7 ± 15.9 kg; height = 172.0 ± 6.3 cm) body composition variables and PhA were measured before and after sitting quietly for 5 h in a controlled environment (26.6 ± 1.7 °C, 72 ± 4.9%RH). Results: It was found that five hours of passive dehydration caused a loss in body weight (Δ = 0.76 ± 0.34 kg, p < 0.05) and a decrease in body fat estimation (Δ = 0.90 ± 0.87 kg, p < 0.001). Additionally, an increase in ECW (Δ = 0.12 ± 0.30 L, p < 0.021) and PhA (Δ = 0.10 ± 0.15°, p < 0.005) was observed. Conclusion: Body weight loss due to passive dehydration decreased BIA-derived fat mass, and increased extracellular water and PhA in physically active and apparently healthy men. Nonetheless, these changes had a negligible effect on the accuracy of the equipment, rendering them clinically insignificant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

44. Research NGOs about Minors at Risk of Exclusion from the Educational Field

Abstract

The following article presents part of the final results of an investigation carried out in the city of Granada, Spain, referring to the knowledge of the dynamics of work in the field of nonformal education with groups at risk of social exclusion and the promotion of communities and groups. More specifically, children at risk of exclusion participate in educational and training activities of local nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), with ages between 6 and 17 years. Its objectives have been to "recognize and describe the main methodological strategies in the teaching of social values and community development," and evaluate the effectiveness of this type of educational organizations. We have used a mixed research design such as questionnaires, interviews, and indirect observation of professionals, volunteers, and users of small and very small NGOs and nonprofit organizations. Key findings include the use of alternative methodologies focused on comprehensive development and community partners; and greater efficiency for its users.
