Abstract

We analyze a Crank-Nicolson finite difference discretization for the perturbed (2+1)D nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with saturable nonlinearity and a perturbation of cubic loss. We show the boundedness, the existence and uniqueness of a numerical solution. We establish the error bound to prove the convergence of the numerical solution. Moreover, we find that the convergence rate is at the second order in both time step and spatial mesh size under a mild assumption. The numerical scheme is validated by the extensive simulations of the (2+1)D saturable nonlinear Schr\"odinger model with cubic loss. The simulations for travelling solitons are implemented by using an accelerated imaginary-time evolution scheme and the Crank-Nicolson finite difference method., Comment: 28 pages, 1 figures, 2 tables

21. University Accelerators and Entrepreneurship Education in Australia: Substantive and Symbolic Motives

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore the status of university accelerators (UAs) in Australia, expanding a similar paper on related entrepreneurship education (EE) in 2019. The aim is to review neoteric global best practice UA, aligning context and specific inference to the impact of UAs in Australia. Design/methodology/approach: The authors introduce an iterative and emergent inquiry into multi-method research, including a quantitative examination of Australian UAs, Leximancer algorithmic analyses of entrepreneurial strategic intent and narratives from best practice applications. Findings: The paper highlights the sparse and inconsistent distribution across UAs in Australia, further characterized by significant symbolic motives of operation. Furthermore, the integration of EE evidenced on global UA is not as evident in Australia, highlighting outcomes more specific to the success of nascent (student) startups as opposed to educational outcomes. Research limitations/implications: Limitations include the availability and accuracy of online documents and data, although implications have been mitigated using multi-method research design. Practical implications: Despite the provision of critical grounding for practitioners and researchers in developing UAs, further research is recommended regarding the efficacy and impact of these accelerators. Originality/value: This study is the first multi-methods emergent inquiry into UAs in Australia, coupled with integration of EE. The authors provide guidelines and inferences for researchers, educators, policymakers and practitioners alike as they seek to explore and act upon the impact of UAs.

33. Exploring Homophily in Demographics and Academic Performance Using Spatial-Temporal Student Networks

Abstract

Network analysis in educational research has primarily relied on self-reported relationships or connections inferred from online learning environments, such as discussion forums. However, a large part of students' social connections through day-to-day on-campus encounters has remained underexplored. The paper examines spatial-temporal student networks using campus WiFi log data throughout a semester, and their relations to the student demographics and academic performance. A tie in the spatial-temporal network was inferred when two individuals connected to the same WiFi access point at the same time intervals at the 'beyond chance' frequency. Our findings revealed that students were more likely to co-locate with the individuals of similar gender, ethnic group identity, family income, and grades. Analysis of homophily over the semester showed that students of the same gender were more likely to co-locate as the semester progressed. However, co-location of the students similar on ethnic minority identity, family income, and grades remained consistent throughout the semester. Mixed-effect regression models demonstrated that features derived from spatial-temporal networks, such as degree, the grade of the most frequently co-located peer, and average grade of five most frequently co-located peers were positively associated with academic performance. This study offers a unique exploration of the potential use of WiFi log data in understanding of student relationships integral to the quality of college experience. 34. A Mixed-Method Study of How Instructors Design for Learning in Online and Distance Education

Abstract

The use of analytical methods from learning analytics (LA) research combined with visualizations of learning activities using learning design (LD) tools and frameworks has provided important insight into how instructors design for learning. Nonetheless, there are many subtle nuances in instructors' design decisions that might not easily be captured using LA tools. Therefore, this study sets out to explore how and why instructors design for learning in an online and distance higher education setting by employing a mixed-method approach, which combined semi-structured interviews of 12 instructors with network analyses of their LDs. Our findings uncovered several underlying factors that influenced how instructors designed their modules and highlighted some discrepancies between instructors' pedagogical beliefs and their actual LD as captured by the Open University Learning Design Initiative (OULDI). This study showcases the potential of combining LA with qualitative insights for a better understanding of the complex design process in online distance higher education.

35. Entrepreneurship Imperatives in Higher Education Institutions: The Case of Australian Universities

Abstract

Earlier research has not explicitly emphasised the dynamic integration of entrepreneurship imperatives and transformation in developing the entrepreneurial university. The purpose of this research is to examine the linkage between the strategic intents articulated by universities and their corresponding level of entrepreneurship transformation. This article develops a theoretical framework to examine transformational imperatives, applying a data analytical approach to assess strategic documents using automated content analysis and complex algorithms. Australian universities were chosen for the research given the specific context of the higher education sector and the availability of strategic documents on the institutions' websites. In the research context, the findings show that, while there are some variances with specific institutions, Australian universities in general, and several groups of universities in particular, expressed different levels of determination, ranging from moderate to moderately strong, to transform themselves into being entrepreneurial. Universities' management can benefit from the theoretical framework developed in this research to craft strategies to further adopt entrepreneurship imperatives. Implications are also provided to inform universities, industry and government with regard to enhancing the dynamics of entrepreneurship ecosystems.

49. Learning Engagement, Learning Outcomes and Learning Gains: Lessons from LA

Abstract

Learning analytic models are built upon traces students leave in technology-enhanced learning platforms as the digital footprints of their learning processes. Learning analytics uses these traces of learning engagement to predict performance and provide learning feedback to students and teachers when these predictions signal the risk of failing a course, or even dropping-out. But not all of these trace variables act as stable and reliable predictors of course performance. In previous research, the authors concluded that trace variables of product type, such as mastery, do a better job than trace variables of process type, such as clicks or time-on-task, in predicting performance. In this study, we extend this analysis by focusing on learning gains rather than learning outcomes as the most important performance dimension. Distinguishing two different levels of initial proficiency, our empirical analysis into the learning of mathematics by first-year university students indicates that the lack of stability of the engagement types of process type is mainly explained by learning pattern found in students of high initial proficiency. For these students, high levels of engagement lead to lower, rather than higher, predicted learning outcomes. Amongst students with lower initial proficiency, higher levels of engagement play a different role. [For the complete proceedings, see ED608557.]

Abstract

Abstract Severe tetanus is characterized by muscle spasm and cardiovascular system disturbance. The pathophysiology of muscle spasm is relatively well understood and involves inhibition of central inhibitory synapses by tetanus toxin. That of cardiovascular disturbance is less clear, but is believed to relate to disinhibition of the autonomic nervous system. The clinical syndrome of autonomic nervous system dysfunction (ANSD) seen in severe tetanus is characterized principally by changes in heart rate and blood pressure which have been linked to increased circulating catecholamines. Previous studies have described varying relationships between catecholamines and signs of ANSD in tetanus, but are limited by confounders and assays used. In this study, we aimed to perform detailed characterization of the relationship between catecholamines (adrenaline and noradrenaline), cardiovascular parameters (heart rate and blood pressure) and clinical outcomes (ANSD, mechanical ventilation required, and length of intensive care unit stay) in adults with tetanus, as well as examine whether intrathecal antitoxin administration affected subsequent catecholamine excretion. Noradrenaline and adrenaline were measured by ELISA from 24-h urine collections taken on day 5 of hospitalization in 272 patients enrolled in a 2 × 2 factorial-blinded randomized controlled trial in a Vietnamese hospital. Catecholamine results measured from 263 patients were available for analysis. After adjustment for potential confounders (i.e., age, sex, intervention treatment, and medications), there were indications of non-linear relationships between urinary catecholamines and heart rate. Adrenaline and noradrenaline were associated with subsequent development of ANSD, and length of ICU stay.
