8. Designing Efficient L2 Writing Assessment Tasks for Low-Proficiency Learners of English. TOEFL® Research Report. RR-97. ETS RR-21-27

Abstract

This report describes the development of efficient second language (L2) writing assessment tasks designed specifically for low-proficiency learners of English to be included in the "TOEFL® Essentials"™ test. Based on the can-do descriptors of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages for the A1 through B1 levels of proficiency, four task types were identified to be prototypical candidate writing tasks for the target test-taker population (i.e., adolescent and adult low-proficiency English learners). Those four task types included: (a) Describe a Photo, (b) Write a Review, (c) Chat With a Friend, and (d) Write an E-mail. These task types were also considered efficient in the framework of the test in that they had the potential to be accessible to low-proficiency learners and to elicit sufficient spontaneous writing for assessment purposes within a short period of time. In the current study, eight assessment tasks, two for each task type, were developed and piloted with 169 A1-B1 learners of English from Japan and Colombia. The findings revealed that the Describe a Photo and Write an E-mail tasks performed the best in eliciting substantial language use and emphasizing distinct performance attributes, both characteristics needed for efficiently measuring test takers' writing proficiency as well as discriminating among proficiency levels at the lower end of the spectrum. The report concludes by highlighting some observations on L2 writing assessment task design for low-proficiency learners of English.

9. Developing an Innovative Elicited Imitation Task for Efficient English Proficiency Assessment. TOEFL® Research Report. RR-96. ETS RR-21-24

Abstract

The elicited imitation task (EIT), in which language learners listen to a series of spoken sentences and repeat each one verbatim, is a commonly used measure of language proficiency in second language acquisition research. The "TOEFL® Essentials"™ test includes an EIT as a holistic measure of speaking proficiency, referred to as the "Listen and Repeat" task type. In this report, we describe the design considerations that informed the development of the EIT for TOEFL Essentials. We also report the results of a series of investigations conducted during the prototyping and pilot phases of test development, which were undertaken with the goal of confirming task design specifications, evaluating scoring performance, and obtaining initial validity evidence to support score interpretation and use of the EIT in the TOEFL Essentials test. We found that task design variables generally performed as expected. The length of input sentence was strongly associated with performance (Pearson r = 0.88), consistent with the construct measured by the EIT, while other task variables not directly related to the EIT construct did not impact performance (e.g., graphics, speaker accent, and response time). Scorers drawn from TOEFL iBT test raters were able to score responses consistently with over 98% exact or adjacent interrater agreement on a 6-point scale, and scores on the pilot version of the EIT were highly reliable (Cronbach's [alpha] = 0.93 on the 15-item pilot version). Correlations between EIT scores and other measures were generally as expected: Correlations with other speaking tasks were high (0.78-0.84) and slightly to somewhat lower for other language measures (0.73 for writing, 0.68 for listening, and 0.57 for reading). Correlation with an independent measure of holistic language proficiency (C-test) was moderately high (0.69), as expected. We discuss the study findings in terms of the TOEFL Essentials test validity argument and point out limitations to the current results along with future research needs. Overall, we believe that the findings provide initial support to warrant the use of the EIT as operationalized in the TOEFL Essentials test.

18. Psychometric Approaches to Analyzing C-Tests

Abstract

The C-test is a type of gap-filling test designed to efficiently measure second language proficiency. The typical C-test consists of several short paragraphs with the second half of every second word deleted. The words with deleted parts are considered as items nested within the corresponding paragraph. Given this testlet structure, it is commonly taken for granted that the C-test design may violate the local independence assumption. However, this assumption has not been fully investigated in the C-test research to date, including the evaluation of alternative psychometric models (i.e., unidimensional and multidimensional) to calibrate and score the C-test. This study addressed each of these issues using a large data set of responses to an English-language C-test. First, we examined the local item independence assumption via multidimensional item response theory (IRT) models, Yen's Q3, and Jackknife Slope Index. Second, we evaluated several IRT models to determine optimal approaches to scoring the C-test. The results support an interpretation of unidimensionality for the C-test items within a paragraph, with only minor evidence of local item dependence. Furthermore, the two-parameter logistic (2PL) IRT model was found to be the most appropriate model for calibrating and scoring the C-test. Implications for designing, scoring, and analyzing C-tests are discussed.

20. The Accounting Doctoral Shortage: Accounting Faculty Opinions on Hiring JD-CPAs as Accounting Educators

Abstract

Objectives: Prior studies have noted that the number of PhDs in accounting are far below the number needed to meet program hiring needs. This paper reviews how the JD-CPA alternative credential is viewed by three academic accreditation bodies (SACS, ACBSP, and AACSB), the American Bar Association (ABA), and current accounting faculty at SACS-accredited institutions of higher education. Methods: An online survey was distributed to accounting educators at 439 institutions accredited by SACS, with 248 complete responses received. Individual demographics and institutional information were summarized statistically. Responses to two questions assessing inclination to hire an otherwise-qualified JD-CPA candidate using a 5-point Likert scale were analyzed by multiple regression with individual and institutional variables as predictors. Results: The study found that JD-CPA accounting educators are widely present in accounting faculties. Responses to the opinion questions indicated a substantial willingness to hire JD-CPAs, albeit with significant differences based on institution type, faculty rank, and possession of a PhD. Conclusion: This study demonstrates general willingness among current accounting faculty to consider JD-CPAs for tenure-track accounting faculty positions while still expressing a preference for candidates with a PhD and with notable reservations from certain demographic segments of the accounting academe.

21. Extreme hypercalcemia due to a giant parathyroid adenoma

Abstract

Background/objective: Primary hyperparathyroidism is the most common cause of hypercalcemia. Hypercalcemia secondary to giant parathyroid adenomas and parathyroid carcinomas share substantial clinical similarities and their differentiation is challenging. Case report: We present the case of a 72-year-old female with profound lethargy and confusion associated with polydipsia and polyuria, who was found to have an extremely elevated serum calcium level of 18.3 mg/dL (normal 8.4–10.5 mg/dL), ionized calcium 2.56 mmol/L (normal 1.20–1.32 mmol/L) and intact parathyroid hormone of 1838 pg/mL (normal 15–65 pg/mL). Ultrasound revealed a large hypoechoic nodule measuring 2.5 x 1.8 × 2.0 cm located in the right thyroid bed. Computed tomography revealed a hypoattenuating mass in the same region without obvious soft tissue invasion or lymphadenopathy. Technetium-99 m sestamibi with single-photon emission computed tomography identified intense focal radiotracer uptake at the same location most consistent with hyperfunctional parathyroid tissue. Patient underwent surgical exploration and resection of a parathyroid mass, which weighed 12.1 g and measured 4.6 x 2.5 × 1.8 cm. Pathology confirmed a diagnosis of benign parathyroid adenoma. Patient's laboratory values normalized and her mental status improved significantly, and she was discharged in stable condition. Discussion: This is a rare case of a symptomatic patient with extreme primary hyperparathyroidism and hypercalcemia that was found to have a benign giant parathyroid adenoma, rather than carcinoma. Conclusion: Differentiation between large hyperfunctioning parathyroid adenoma and parathyroid carcinoma is nontrivial due to shared characteristics of each. Therefore, the final diagnosis requires imaging and histopathological examination.

24. From Needs Analysis to Task Design: Insights from an English for Specific Purposes Context

Abstract

Needs analysis (NA) has long been argued to be the prerequisite for the design of language curricula or syllabi and the selection of tasks. According to Long (2005), a one-size-fits-all approach should be substituted by a careful examination of learners' needs in a particular domain or learner community. Despite the increasing practice of carrying out a NA as a first step in curriculum design, it is still unclear how exactly the insights obtained from NA can be used in meaningful ways to take informed decisions about task and syllabus design. This study attempts to fill this gap by applying the findings obtained in a NA in the domain of a hotel receptionist's job to the design of pedagogic tasks. The goals of this study were to obtain insights into what tasks are done in this domain (task selection), what kind of language use is associated with these tasks (task discourse analysis), how the information about perceived difficulty of tasks can be translated into instructionally manipulable variables (task difficulty), and in what order the resulting tasks should be presented to learners (task sequencing). The study design employed in-depth qualitative data collection, including 10 semi-structured interviews and three observations, and the sources were domain experts and domain novices. By linking the information obtained in the NA with a theoretical task complexity model, the study provides a detailed account of how real-life tasks can be translated into an articulated set of genuine and instructionally relevant pedagogic tasks.

Abstract

The Test of German as a Foreign Language (TestDaF) plays a critical role as a standardized test of German language proficiency. Developed and administered by the Society for Academic Study Preparation and Test Development (g.a.s.t.), TestDaF was launched in 2001 and has experienced persistent annual growth, with more than 44,000 test takers in 2016 (a 16% increase over the previous year; g.a.s.t., 2017). Of note, and in keeping with the motto of "Study successfully in German," TestDaF is one of a suite of products and services offered by g.a.s.t. and intended to facilitate access to German university studies, including the following: an Internet-based platform for individualized language learning (Deutsch-Uni Online or DUO); an online assessment for placing students into foreign language courses (onSET); and a university aptitude assessment, the Test for Academic Studies (TestAS). On its website, g.a.s.t. provides ample information regarding all of these products for different audiences, including test takers, test centers, universities, and teachers. 29. Metal-poor stars observed with the Magellan Telescope – IV. Neutron-capture element signatures in 27 main-sequence stars.

Abstract

We present a chemo-dynamical analysis for 27 near main-sequence turnoff metal-poor stars, including 20 stars analysed for the first time. The sample spans a range in [Fe/H] from −2.5 to −3.6, with 44 per cent having [Fe/H]<−2.9. We derived chemical abundances for 17 elements, including strontium and barium. We derive Li abundances for the sample, which are in good agreement with the 'Spite Plateau' value. The lighter elements (Z < 30) generally agree well with those of other low-metallicity halo stars. This broadly indicates chemically homogeneous gas at the earliest times. We used the [Sr/Ba] versus [Ba/Fe] diagram to classify metal-poor stars into five populations based on their observed ratios. We find HE 0232 − 3755 to be a likely main r -process star, and HE 2214 − 6127 and HE 2332 − 3039 to be limited- r stars. CS30302-145, HE 2045 − 5057, and CD −24°17504 plausibly originated in long-disrupted early dwarf galaxies. We also find that the derived [Sr/H] and [Ba/H] values for CD −24°17504 are not inconsistent with the predicted yields of the s -process in massive rotating low-metallicity stars models. Further theoretical explorations will be helpful to better understand the earliest mechanisms and time scales of heavy element production for comparison with these and other observational abundance data. Finally, we investigate the orbital histories of our stars. Most display halo-like kinematics although three stars (CS 29504-018, HE 0223 − 2814, and HE 2133 − 0421) appear to be disc-like in nature. This confirms the extragalactic origin for CS 30302-145, HE 2045 − 5057, and, in particular, CD −24°17504 which likely originated from a small accreted stellar system as one of the oldest stars. Abstract

Brake wear particles are generated through frictional contact between the brake disc or brake drum and the brake pads. Some of these particles may be released into the atmosphere, contributing to airborne fine particulate matter (PM2.5). In this study, an onboard system was developed and tested to measure brake wear particles emitted under real-world driving conditions. Brake wear particles were extracted from a fixed volume enclosure surrounding the pad and disc installed on the front wheel of a light-duty vehicle. Real-time data on size distribution, number concentration, PM2.5 mass, and the contribution of semi-volatiles were obtained via a suite of instruments sub-sampling from the constant volume sampler (CVS) dilution tunnel. Repeat measurements of brake particles were obtained from a 42 min bespoke drive cycle on a chassis dynamometer, from on-road tests in an urban area, and from braking events on a test track. The results showed that particle emissions coincided with braking events, with mass emissions around 1 mg/km/brake during on-road driving. Particle number emissions of low volatility particles were between 2 and 5 × 109 particles/km/brake. The highest emissions were observed under more aggressive braking. The project successfully developed a proof-of-principle measurement system for brake wear emissions from transient vehicle operation. The system shows good repeatability for stable particle metrics, such as non-volatile particle number (PN) from the solid particle counting system (SPCS), and allows for progression to a second phase of work where emissions differences between commercially available brake system components will be assessed. Abstract

Accomplishing a communication task in the real world requires the ability not only to do the task per se but also to manage aspects of the context in which it occurs. For this reason, simulations of target language use contexts have been incorporated into the design of communicative language tests as a way of enhancing the authenticity of assessment task performance. Although some contextual factors may increase extraneous cognitive load and distract learners from focusing on the task at hand (Sweller, 1994), they represent important design considerations in task‐based language assessment (TBLA), where the purpose of assessment is to determine what second language (L2) learners can do with the target language in the real world. In that sense, the extraneous cognitive load might well be part of the construct we are interested in assessing. Accordingly, the current study simulated aspects of a real‐world task performance context as part of an email writing task assessment. Simulated context was operationalized as (a) additional information about the task scenario, (b) a visual image to simulate the physical context, and (c) an audio to replicate the real‐world experience. A total of 276 L2 English learners performed the email task, half with simulated context and the other half without it. Findings revealed that, when presented with simulated context, the tasks were perceived by participants to have induced more time pressure and to be more interesting. In terms of performance effects, the provision of simulated context negatively affected the syntactic complexity of participants' writing but positively affected their syntactic fluency. It also led to greater discrimination among learners at different proficiency levels on various measures of language performance. Abstract

The Elicited Imitation Task (EIT) is a popular technique for efficiently measuring global proficiency in multiple languages, and accumulated evidence indicates high reliability and strong relationships with other proficiency measures. Nevertheless, several dimensions of EIT design remain open to investigation, including the assumption that a pause is required in between the aural stimulus and oral response, to ensure processing of the input and prevent so-called parroting. This study investigated the relationship between three poststimulus pause conditions, learners' proficiency and working memory, and their EIT scores as well as their perceptions of task difficulty, mental effort, focus, and interest. Findings indicated no differences in performances or perceptions between the 0-second pause, 2-second pause, and 5-second pause conditions, and a weak relationship between EIT performance and working memory. Across all conditions, the EIT distinguished consistently among proficiency levels, correlated strongly with a criterion proficiency measure, and produced remarkably reliable scores. Abstract

Language program evaluation is a pragmatic mode of inquiry that illuminates the complex nature of language-related interventions of various kinds, the factors that foster or constrain them, and the consequences that ensue. Program evaluation enables a variety of evidence-based decisions and actions, from designing programs and implementing practices to judging effectiveness and improving outcomes. Though often narrowly construed as an external accountability requirement only, evaluation may provide a heuristic for generating new knowledge; raising awareness; and transforming the educational, social, and economic circumstances of individuals and communities. In this article, I review the origins and interdisciplinary nature of program evaluation, and I trace its development within applied linguistics and language education in particular. I then consider the current contributions of language program evaluation, and I point to likely future trends. In particular, I highlight how changing global circumstances, technological affordances, and contexts and purposes for language learning and language use are both impacting the nature of evaluation and presenting challenges for which evaluation is uniquely suited to respond. I also emphasize the potential--versus as yet realized--contribution of program evaluation as a way of ameliorating gaps in current language research and practice, and I point to implications for training, dissemination, and integration of this mode of inquiry as an important part of the future intellectual core of applied linguistics.

Traditions of statistical significance testing in second language (L2) quantitative research are strongly entrenched in how researchers design studies, select analyses, and interpret results. However, statistical significance tests using "p" values are commonly misinterpreted by researchers, reviewers, readers, and others, leading to confusion regarding the actual findings of primary studies and critical challenges for the accumulation of meaningful knowledge about language learning research. This paper outlines the basic challenges of accurately calculating and interpreting statistical significance tests, explores common examples of incorrect interpretations in L2 research, and proposes strategies for resolving these problems.

Abstract

Synthetic, structural, and computational approaches were used to solve the puzzle as to how a phenolic nonsteroidal estrogen 1 with only a single H‐bond to its receptor was more potent than an isomer 2 which formed an intricate network of H‐bonds. Synthesis of a series of substituted phenols revealed that pKa was not a determinant of estrogenic activity. First‐principles calculation also failed to explain the difference in activity of 1 and 2. Molecular dynamics revealed that 1 formed a more stable receptor complex compared to 2, which may explain its increased activity despite forming fewer apparent H‐bonds with the protein. Abstract

The clinical utility of inhibiting cytochrome P450 17A1 (CYP17), a cytochrome p450 enzyme that is required for the production of androgens, has been exemplified by the approval of abiraterone for the treatment of castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). Recently, however, it has been reported that CYP17 inhibitors can interact directly with the androgen receptor (AR). A phase I study recently reported that seviteronel, a CYP17 lyase-selective inhibitor, aedemonstrated a sustained reduction in prostate-specific antigen in a patient with CRPC, and another study showed seviteronel's direct effects on AR function. This suggested that seviteronel may have therapeutically relevant activities in addition to its ability to inhibit androgen production. Here, we have demonstrated that CYP17 inhibitors, with the exception of orteronel, can function as competitive AR antagonists. Conformational profiling revealed that the CYP17 inhibitor-bound AR adopted a conformation that resembled the unliganded AR (apo-AR), precluding nuclear localization and DNA binding. Further, we observed that seviteronel and abiraterone inhibited the growth of tumor xenografts expressing the clinically relevant mutation AR-F876L and that this activity could be attributed entirely to competitive AR antagonism. Abstract

The issue and commentary papers in this "Perspectives" column address one use of assessments--speaking and writing proficiency assessments based on the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL, 2012) Proficiency Guidelines--as a means for establishing and maintaining one important competency standard for world languages teachers who work in U.S. public schools. To be sure, as reflected in the insightful, critical, and poignant observations of the contributors, the issue is highstakes, along several dimensions: (a) would-be language teachers are held accountable to performance on a proficiency test as a pre-requisite to licensure; (b) teacher preparation programs are responsible for developing teachers' competencies, including language proficiency, and they are accredited based on their ability to do so; and (c) the professional organization of language teachers, ACTFL, has established recommended standards of language proficiency for qualified teachers, and the appropriateness, accuracy, and fairness of these standards is on the line.

Abstract

Unruptured intracranial aneurysms (UIA) are common. For many the treatment risks outweigh their risk of subarachnoid haemorrhage and patients undergo surveillance imaging. There is little data to inform if and how to monitor UIAs resulting in widely varying practices. This study aimed to determine the current practice of unruptured UIA surveillance in the United Kingdom. A questionnaire was designed to address the themes of surveillance protocols for UIA including when surveillance is initiated, how frequently it is performed, and when it is terminated. Additionally, how aneurysm growth is managed and how clinically meaningful growth is defined were explored. The questionnaire was distributed to members of the British Neurovascular Group using probability-based cluster and non-probability purposive sampling methods. Responses were received from 30 of the 30 (100.0%) adult neurosurgical units in the United Kingdom of which 27 (90.0%) routinely perform surveillance for aneurysm growth. Only four units had a unit policy. The mean patient age up to which a unit would initiate follow-up of a low-risk UIA was 65.4 ± 9.0 years. The time points at which imaging is performed varied widely. There was an even split between whether units use a fixed duration of follow-up or an age threshold for terminating surveillance. Forty percent of units will follow-up patients more than 5 years from diagnosis. The magnitude in the change in size that was felt to constitute growth ranged from 1 to 3mm. No units routinely used vessel wall imaging although 27 had access to 3T MRI capable of performing it. There is marked heterogeneity in surveillance practices between units in the United Kingdom. This study will help units better understand their practice relative to their peers and provide a framework forplanning further research on aneurysm growth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
