This qualitative study explores the potential ways that a traditional Yeshiva education (TYE) helps prepare students for entering and succeeding in law school. The researcher interviewed five rabbi-law professors for their take on this phenomenon and compared the results of those findings with the scholarly literature on the topic to date. Much of that existing scholarly literature focuses on how a Yeshiva education might help students who later switch to law school because of the Yeshiva's focus on Talmud study, as well as the Yeshiva's use of the Socratic Method and dyadic Chavrusa study models. To that end, this study sheds light on the various aspects of traditional Yeshiva education that could be beneficial for those pursuing a legal career. The findings demonstrate that there is a broad consensus that Yeshiva education fosters critical thinking and analytical skills through its emphasis on Talmud study, which can be advantageous in comprehending complex legal concepts and arguments. Moreover, exposure to aspects of the law school culture and methodology during Yeshiva education can arguably prepare students for its use by law teachers in law school, contributing to their ability to productively engage in thoughtful and probing discussions.

Abstract Tourism pressure on the Red Sea ecosystem have posed significant threats to numerous endemic species, including the Ghost Crab Ocypode saratan, which is exclusively found along a small stretch of beach in the Eilat/Aqaba Red Sea Gulf. Due to the limited understanding of their ecology, we investigated how tourism impacts the behavior of this species. Employing a natural setup, we compared burrow dimensions, pyramid structures, and density across three distinct beach sections subjected to varying levels of human interference. Access to a secluded beach, referred to as “No Man’s Land,” provided a crucial control for our study. This facilitated a comparative analysis of ghost crab activity among beaches experiencing differing levels of human disturbances: (1) a tourist beach characterized by continual high disturbance, (2) a naval beach subject to moderate and sporadic disturbances, and (3) the isolated “no man’s land” beach devoid of human presence. Our observations revealed notable differences in ghost crab density among the three beaches. Furthermore, we observed that on the secluded beach, larger individuals tended to establish burrows farther from the waterline and construct taller sand pyramids. Given the significance of sexual selection processes, their conservation becomes imperative for the survival and potential expansion of the ghost crab population across the Gulf of Eilat/Aqaba. We propose a straight-forward and cost-effective strategy: the designation of short, secluded beach enclaves along this gulf. We believe that this approach will mitigate adverse impacts of tourisms while simultaneously benefiting various sandy beach species.

Abstract Background Despite Israel’s increased use of prescription opioids, reported deaths resulting or associated with opioids have decreased, in fact dramatically, since 2005. This contrast is unique and difficult to explain. We sought to examine whether higher prescribed opioid dosages among adults without oncologic diagnoses were associated with higher all-cause mortality rates. Methods A historical cohort study in Clalit Health Services, using a data repository including all adult patients prescribed opiates between 2010 and 2020, excluding patients with oncologic diagnoses. Patients were classified into three groups according to opioid use: below 50 Morphine milligram equivalents (MME) per day, 50 to 90 MME per day, and above 90 MME per day. Sex, Charlson comorbidity score, age and socioeconomic status were recorded. Mortality rates were compared between the dosage groups and compared to age-standardized mortality rates in the general population. Results On multivariate analysis, patients receiving 90 or more MME per day were 2.37 (95%CI 2.1 to 2.68) more likely to have died compared to patients receiving below 50 MME per day. The respective hazard ratio among patients receiving between 50 and 90 MME per day was 2.23 (2.01 to 2.46). Among patients aged 18 to 50, standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) compared to the general population ranged between 5.4 to 8.6 among women, receiving between 50 and 90 MME per day, and between 8.07 and 10.7 among women receiving 90 or more MME per day. The respective SMRs among men were 1.2 to 3.8 and 2.7 to 5.4. Conclusion Increased opioid use is independently associated with increased all-cause mortality among non-oncological patients. This result is most notable among young adults with little or no known comorbidities. These findings are consistent with results in other countries and seem more credible than previous Israeli reports. Healthcare regulators and providers should, therefore, act to curtail the increasing opioid prescriptions and devise and enhance controls in the healthcare system, which, until 2020, had very limited mechanisms in place.

Social isolation causes profound changes in social behaviour in a variety of species. However, the genetic and molecular mechanisms modulating behavioural responses to social isolation and social recovery remain to be elucidated. Here, we quantified the behavioural response of vinegar flies to social isolation using two distinct protocols (social space preference and sociability, the spontaneous tendencies to form groups). We found that social isolation increased social space and reduced sociability. These effects of social isolation were reversible and could be reduced after 3 days of group housing. Flies with a loss of function of neuroligin3 (orthologue of autism-related neuroligin genes) with known increased social space in a socially enriched environment were still able to recover from social isolation. We also show that dopamine (DA) is needed for a response to social isolation and recovery in males but not in females. Furthermore, only in males, DA levels are reduced after isolation and are not recovered after group housing. Finally, in socially enriched flies mutant for neuroligin3, DA levels are reduced in males, but not in females. We propose a model to explain how DA and neuroligin3 are involved in the behavioural response to social isolation and its recovery in a dynamic and sex-specific manner.

Abstract The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a forthcoming powerful high-luminosity facility, represents an exciting opportunity to explore new physics. In this article, we study the potential of the EIC to probe the coupling between axion-like particles (ALPs) and photons in coherent scattering. The ALPs can be produced via photon fusion and decay back to two photons inside the EIC detector. In a prompt-decay search, we find that the EIC can set the most stringent bound for m a ≲ 20 GeV and probe the effective scales Λ ≲ 105 GeV. In a displaced-vertex search, which requires adopting an EM calorimeter technology that provides directionality, the EIC could probe ALPs with m a ≲ 1 GeV at effective scales Λ ≲ 107 GeV. Combining the two search strategies, the EIC can probe a significant portion of unexplored parameter space in the 0.2 < m a < 20 GeV mass range.

Abstract Introduction Bilateral testicular germ cell tumor (BGCT) is a rare disease, occasionally considered to be more aggressive than unilateral germ cell tumors (GCT) in some reports. Among BGCT, a synchronous disease might be diagnosed at a higher stage than a metachronous disease, resulting in lower cancer-specific survival. Hence, our study aimed to perform a comparative analysis between unilateral testicular GCT, bilateral synchronous GCT, and bilateral metachronous GCT, aiming to verify the possibility that BGCT is diagnosed with a higher stage and may require more aggressive management. Material and methods In our multicenter retrospective study we reviewed medical records of 40 patients with BGCT (24 metachronous and 16 synchronous). Clinical characteristics, pathological features of the primary and secondary tumors, adjuvant treatments (chemotherapy and radiotherapy)and sperm quality were evaluated as well as cancer-specific survival and overall survival. A cohort of one-to-one matched patients with unilateral GCT were used to determine risk factors for developing BGCT. Results Patients with BGCT were slightly younger compared to those with unilateral GCT and had more advanced disease. Despite similar T-stage distribution between the two groups, nodal involvement was nearly twofold more frequent in patients with BGCT disease (42% vs 22%, p = 0.056). Additionally, although similar histological subtypes distribution at presentation among the two groups, the synchronous disease was diagnosed with a higher local T-stage (OR = 3.4), higher proportions of patients with elevated serum BHCG levels, and more frequent nodal involvement (OR = 2.2). This was later translated into an 18% higher disease-specific mortality rate. The median time to develop a contralateral tumor was 92 months. Deep neural networks have shown state-of-the-art results in audio source separation tasks in recent years. However, deploying such networks, especially on edge devices, is challenging due to memory and computation requirements. In this work, we focus on quantization, a leading approach for addressing these challenges. We start with a theoretical and empirical analysis of the signal-to-distortion ratio (SDR) in the presence of quantization noise, which presents a fundamental limitation in audio source separation tasks. These analyses show that quantization noise mainly affects performance when the model produces high SDRs. We empirically validate the theoretical insights and illustrate them on audio source separation models. In addition, the empirical analysis shows a high sensitivity to activations quantization, especially to the network's input and output signals. Following the analysis, we propose Fully Quantized Source Separation (FQSS), a quantization-aware training (QAT) method for audio source separation tasks. FQSS introduces a novel loss function based on knowledge distillation that considers quantization-sensitive samples during training and handles the quantization noise of the input and output signals. We validate the efficiency of our method in both time and frequency domains. Finally, we apply FQSS to several architectures (CNNs, LSTMs, and Transformers) and show negligible degradation compared to the full-precision baseline models.

Abstract The apoptotic intrinsic pathway is initiated by perforation of the mitochondrial outer membrane by the effector pro-apoptotic proteins of the Bcl-2 family, Bax and Bak. Bax and Bak need to be activated, a process facilitated by the action of BH3-only pro-apoptotic members of the Bcl-2 family. The latter either directly activates the effector proteins or antagonizes the action of pro-survival Bcl-2 family members such as Bcl-xL. The nuclear envelope is a known target of the apoptotic machinery; however, it may also act as mediator of apoptosis. We showed previously that the nuclear envelope protein nesprin-2, a component of the linker of nucleoskeleton and cytoskeleton (LINC) complex, can bind to Bax in close proximity to the mitochondria and that the binding increases in apoptotic cells. We now show that depleting nesprin-2 inhibits the apoptotic mitochondrial pathway as measured by Bax and Bak activation and cytochrome c release. This survival effect was Bcl-xL-dependent. Nesprin-2 depletion also inhibited spontaneous exposure of the N-terminus of Bak in cells lacking Bcl-xL and increased the presence of Bcl-xL and Bax in the mitochondria. These results indicate that nesprin-2 promotes Bak activation and regulates mitochondrial translocation/retrotranslocation of Bcl-2 family proteins. Our findings demonstrate a new apoptotic pathway whereby the nuclear envelope, via nesprin-2, regulates apoptosis.

The COVID-19 pandemic has created a situation, the "anthropopause", of lockdowns and distancing among individuals to reduce the spread of the disease. One of the major problems to surface is the inequality of the educational process in schools. We present a study of high school students who conduct a year-long research project with an academic. We hypothesized that the projects would not be impacted because of the individual manner of study involved. We analyzed the number of research proposals submitted in the years 2015-2021. We compared the data of the pre-epidemic period with the two pandemic years, 2020 and 2021. Our data show that in the years of the pandemic, significantly less research proposals were submitted, and the number of research proposals rejected was lower, but the total number of research proposals approved, or the number of theses submitted, was not significantly different. The research areas in which Israeli high school students conducted research were mostly in the laboratory (63.2%) and agriculture (27.5%), while ecology was relatively insignificant--whether in captivity (3.1%) or the field (5.1%). A new field that is fast becoming of interest is bioinformatics. Research in agriculture was significantly lower during the pandemic period, while there were no differences in the other subjects between the two periods. We conclude that the fewer research proposals submitted suggest that those that did not take the subject seriously enough did not begin the process. This resulted in a lower number of rejections and is substantiated by the fact that an equal number of students that submitted their final theses did not differ from the years before the pandemic. We are optimistic that the truly motivated students will continue to make the effort to be involved in biology science projects over and above their regular school curriculum and in spite of the COVID-19 restrictions and limitations.

This paper focuses on two elements of the Passover Seder ritual and their connection to Piagetian education theory. After outlining Piaget's theory of genetic epistemology and its implications for education theory, it focuses on Sigel's distancing theory, which touts question asking as a tool for presenting information to students. This paper argues that the Jewish ritual of the Passover Seder was formulated with such pedagogical methods in mind, especially as it concerns the role of questioning. This paper also discusses storytelling's importance as an effective tool in pedagogical instruction, and how the Passover Seder also takes advantage of that modality to make the ritual more impactful for educational purposes.

We present theoretical analysis and design considerations of a THz superradiant FEL. We derive analytical expressions for the spectral parameter of THz radiation, emitted superradiantly in a rectangular waveguide using a Longitudinal Section Magnetic mode expansion. The results compare well with numerical simulations using UCLA GPTFEL code. GPT simulations of the accelerator e-beam transport show that the chirp provided by a hybrid photocathode RF gun, can produce tight bunching at the undulator site below σ = 100fs. This enables intense superradiant emission up to 3THz, limited by the beam bunching factor. Phase-space analysis of the beam transport indicates that keeping the beam bunching parameter small enough for higher THz frequency operation is limited by the energy spread of the beam in the gun.

This Article explores the tax law challenges associated with the taxation of cryptocurrencies and offers proposals to address such challenges. The Article addresses the proper tax treatment of different cryptocurrency transactions and activities. It examines various aspects associated with the taxation of cryptocurrency through its life cycle, starting from earning cryptocurrency, through its disposal or exchange. The Article also examines the tax treatment of two special crypto events, hard forks and airdrops. Specifically, this Article describes a proposal to tax cryptocurrencies based on their unique features. It argues that various ways of earning or receiving crypto tokens (for example, mining in proof-of-work (PoW) protocols like Bitcoin and staking in proof-of-stake (PoS) protocols like Ether) generate taxable income. The Article argues that the U.S. framework for taxing cryptocurrency is unadministrable and ignores the defining feature that distinguishes crypto from other assets: its volatility. Because of its volatility, crypto should not be taxed until tokens are exchanged for real-world items like fiat currency or goods and services. Abstract Background Prescription opioids are widely used for pain control and palliative care but have been associated with a variety of untoward effects, including opioid use disorder, addiction, and increased mortality. Patterns of opioid use in Israel are to date poorly described. Methods Using a community-based database, the authors performed a retrospective analysis of filled opioid prescriptions of Israeli HMO members 18 years of age or older during the years of 2010–2020 that filled at least one opioid prescription. Morphine milligram equivalent (MME) calculations were stratified by presence or absence of oncology diagnosis and by specific opioid medication. Results The percentage of HMO members who filled at least one opioid prescription increased every year from 2.1% in 2010 to 4.2% in 2020. There was an increase in the MME per prescription (44.2%), daily MME per capita (142.1%) and MME per prescription-filling patient (39%) from 2010 to 2020. Increased prescription opioid use is driven by a small group of non-oncological patients, which is less than 1.5% of opioid-prescribed patients and 0.1% of the adult population, primarily owing to fentanyl use. Conclusion Supervision and control of opioid prescriptions in Israel should be a focused effort directed at patients prescribed uniquely high dosages rather than a population-wide strategy that focuses on all patients prescribed opioids. This should be complemented by improved physician training and access to non-opioid therapies, as well as improved data collection and analysis.

Abstract Background Right middle lobe (RML) syndrome is a recurrent or chronic obstruction of the RML causing atelectasis of the right middle lobe due to mechanical and nonmechanical etiologies. The consequences of untreated RML syndrome range from chronic cough to post‐obstructive pneumonia and bronchiectasis. We report here our bronchoscopy experience in patients with RML syndrome. Methods We conducted a retrospective study of adult patients who underwent bronchoscopy for RML syndrome at Rabin Medical Center from 2008 through 2022. Demographic data and medical history, bronchoscopy findings and procedures, and follow‐up results were collected. Results A total of 66 patients (57.6% male, mean age 63 ± 13 years) underwent bronchoscopy for RML syndrome during the study period. Bronchoscopy revealed a mechanical etiology in 49 (74.2%) cases, including endobronchial mass (21, 31.8%) and external compression (7, 10.6%). Malignancy was identified in 20 (30.3%) cases. In 62 patients (93.9%), the bronchoscopy resulted in partial or complete reopening of the RML bronchus. The therapeutic bronchoscopic procedures were balloon dilatation (19), laser ablation (17), mechanical debridement (12), endobronchial stent insertion (11), and cryoablation (6). Conclusions Malignancy was identified as the etiology of RML syndrome in approximately 25% of cases, suggesting bronchoscopy should be performed in every case of RML atelectasis. To our knowledge, this is the first reported series of endobronchial stenting of the RML bronchus in the context of RML syndrome.

ABSTRACT: Streptococcus pyogenes is an important human pathogen, commonly spread by airborne droplets but also by ingestion of contaminated food. Apart from causing infection, this pathogen produces 13 distinct types of streptococcal pyrogenic exotoxins (SPE). The current method for detection cannot distinguish between the biologically active form of SPE that has been reported to cause foodborne outbreaks and the inactivated toxin that poses no health risk. To measure the biological activity of SPE type C (SPE-C), one such toxin that was linked to foodborne outbreaks associated with milk and milk products, we developed a cell-based assay that can discern between biologically active and inactive SPE-C. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first showing that SPE-C activates T-cells expressing Vβ8. With this finding, we used a T-cell line natively expressing Vβ8 that was genetically engineered to also express the luciferase reporter gene under the regulation of nuclear factor of activated T-cells response element in combination with a B-cell line to present the recombinant SPE-C (rSPE-C) toxin via major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II to the Vβ8 T-cell receptor (TCR) in an assay to detect and to discern between biologically active and inactive rSPE-C. By using this system, we demonstrated that SPE-C induced significant IL-2 secretion after 72 h and visible light emission after only 5 h, doubling by 24 h. We utilize this finding to assess the specificity of the assay and the effect of pasteurization on SPE-C activity. We observed no cross-reactivity with SPE-B and significant loss of SPE-C biological activity in spiked phosphate-buffered saline while SPE-C spiked into milk is heat stable. Once SPE-C has formed, it is infeasible to eliminate it from milk by thermal treatment.

Asynclitism, a misalignment of the fetal head with respect to the plane of passage through the birth canal, represents a significant obstetric challenge. High degrees of asynclitism are associated with labor dystocia, difficult operative delivery, and cesarean delivery. Despite its clinical relevance, the diagnosis of asynclitism and its influence on the outcome of labor remain matters of debate. This study analyzes the role of the degree of asynclitism (AD) in assessing labor progress and predicting labor outcome, focusing on its ability to predict intrapartum cesarean delivery (ICD) versus non-cesarean delivery. The study also aims to assess the performance of the AIDA (Artificial Intelligence Dystocia Algorithm) algorithm in integrating AD with other ultrasound parameters for predicting labor outcome. This retrospective study involved 135 full-term nulliparous patients with singleton fetuses in cephalic presentation undergoing neuraxial analgesia. Data were collected at three Italian hospitals between January 2014 and December 2020. In addition to routine digital vaginal examination, all patients underwent intrapartum ultrasound (IU) during protracted second stage of labor (greater than three hours). Four geometric parameters were measured using standard 3.5 MHz transabdominal ultrasound probes: head-to-symphysis distance (HSD), degree of asynclitism (AD), angle of progression (AoP), and midline angle (MLA). The AIDA algorithm, a machine learning-based decision support system, was used to classify patients into five classes (from 0 to 4) based on the values of the four geometric parameters and to predict labor outcome (ICD or non-ICD). Six machine learning algorithms were used: MLP (multi-layer perceptron), RF (random forest), SVM (support vector machine), XGBoost, LR (logistic regression), and DT (decision tree). Pearson’s correlation was used to investigate the relationship between AD and the other parameters. A degree of asynclitism greater than 70 mm was found to be significantly associated with an increased rate of cesarean deliveries. Pearson’s correlation analysis showed a weak to very weak correlation between AD and AoP (PC = 0.36, p < 0.001), AD and HSD (PC = 0.18, p < 0.05), and AD and MLA (PC = 0.14). The AIDA algorithm demonstrated high accuracy in predicting labor outcome, particularly for AIDA classes 0 and 4, with 100% agreement with physician-practiced labor outcome in two cases (RF and SVM algorithms) and slightly lower agreement with MLP. For AIDA class 3, the RF algorithm performed best, with an accuracy of 92%. AD, in combination with HSD, MLA, and AoP, plays a significant role in predicting labor dystocia and labor outcome. The AIDA algorithm, based on these four geometric parameters, has proven to be a promising decision support tool for predicting labor outcome and may help reduce the need for unnecessary cesarean deliveries, while improving maternal-fetal outcomes. Future studies with larger cohorts are needed to further validate these findings and refine the cut-off thresholds for AD and other parameters in the AIDA algorithm.

This study presents the development and application of a prototype decision support system (DSS) for tree selection specifically for Punjab, India, a region facing challenges of low forest cover and an increasing demand for sustainable land use practices. The DSS developed using the R Shiny framework integrates ecological, social, and agro-commercial criteria to facilitate scientific knowledge decision making in tree plantation. The modules in this DSS include a tree selection tool based on comprehensive species attributes, a GIS-based tree suitability map module utilizing an Analytical Hierarchical Process (AHP), and a silviculture practice information module sourced from authoritative databases. Combining sophisticated statistical and spatial analysis, such as NMDS and AHP-GIS, this DSS mitigates data redundancy in SDM while incorporating extensive bibliographic research in dataset processing. The study highlights the necessity of fundamental niche-based suitability in comparison to realized niche suitability. It emphasizes on the importance of addressing ecosystem services, agro-commercial aspects, and enhancing silvicultural knowledge. Additionally, the study underscores the significance of local stakeholder engagement in tree selection, particularly involving farmers and other growers, to ensure community involvement and support. The DSS supports agroforestry initiatives and finds applications in urban tree management and governmental programs, emphasizing the use of scientific literature at each step, in contrast to relying solely on local knowledge.
