Using interviews with 74 Korean undergraduate students at ten elite U.S. colleges, I explore how intersections of gender and class decide who pursues transnational mobility and cosmopolitan life more successfully. Men from highly-transnational families tried to exert 'agency for becoming' while mapping out their 'choice biographies', aspiring and expected to be high-achieving and influential worldwide, often thanks to their U.S. citizenship or permanent residency. By contrast, women across class and legal statuses tended to accommodate 'normal biographies', prioritising their (future) responsibilities as mothers, wives, and daughters. Regarding class limitations, both women and men from less-transnational families tended to expect to return to Korea upon graduation, feeling culturally and legally limited to utilising their degrees across national borders. Yet, across class lines, men were more ambitious and career-oriented than women, implying gender-based constraints among the skilled diaspora. These findings shed light on multiple forms of inequalities among high-achieving Asian student migrants.

AbstractPurposeMethodsResultsConclusions Dry eye syndrome is a common ocular disease that causes morbidity, high healthcare burden, and decreased quality of life. In this study, we evaluated the beneficial effects of a standardized extract of small black soybean (EYESOY®) in a benzalkonium chloride (BAC)-induced murine model of dry eye. Experimental dry eye was induced by instillation of 0.02% BAC on the right eye of the Sprague-Dawley rats. Saline solution or EYESOY were administered orally every day for 8 weeks. EYESOY significantly improved tear volume in the cornea compared with that in the BAC group. Moreover, EYESOY inhibited damage to the corneal epithelial cells and lacrimal glands by suppressing the oxidative and inflammatory responses in a mouse dry eye model. It also increased the goblet cell density and mucin integrity in the conjunctiva. Our results suggest that EYESOY has the potential to alleviate dry eye syndrome. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Shape memory alloys (SMAs) have an innate property that allows them to return to a memorized form when stimulated. They have been recently designed as flexible fabrics for use in wearable assistive devices. This study aimed to develop a rehabilitation assistive glove with good wearability for a hemiplegic patient using a knitted SMA with a high-unidirectional contractile response. We fabricated warp-knitted SMA actuators, which had higher contractile responses than those of weft-knitted SMA. The use of a knitting loom allowed these actuators to fit all the fingers of a patient. We developed a full-fabric glove, placed the SMA wires on the finger regions to form a tendon-driven structure, and attached knitted SMA actuators to the dorsal and palmar sides of the hand to assist flexion and extension. The joint range of motion after glove actuation increased by 11.620% and 141.710% in flexion and extension, respectively. The range of motion improved more with glove rehabilitation than with thermal stimulation or no actuation. The grip force also increased by 52.400% after rehabilitation exercises. The safety of the heat generated during actuation was confirmed, and its applicability as a thermal stimulus was validated (based on increased skin temperature). Structural and spatial aspects of cell degradation are studied using a combination of diffraction-and imaging-based tools applying laboratory X-rays, neutron scattering and synchrotron radiation with electrochemical and thermal characterization. Experimental characterization is carried out on cylindrical cells of 21700-type, where four regimes of cell degradation are identified, which are supplemented by an increased cell resistance and surface temperature during cell operation. The amount of intercalated lithium in the fully charged anodes in the fresh and aged states is determined by ex situ X-ray diffraction radiography and in situ X-ray diffraction computed tomography. The qualitatively similar character of the results revealed a loss of active lithium along with the development of a complex heterogeneous distribution over the electrode stripe. Disabled athletes participate in sports at elite levels; however, industry product and academic research regarding adaptive sportswear is lacking. Limited availability of sportswear can be a barrier to participation in athletics for disabled people, particularly athletes with mobility differences. This study therefore aimed to enhance the sportswear design process in a single-case study of a Paralympic shooting athlete who participated in the 2020 Paralympic games. Qualitative and anthropometric data were collected via a high-communication, five-step design process. The researchers explored 3D apparel design technologies in tandem with physical prototyping methods to understand benefits and challenges of said tools in adaptive sportswear development. Key findings of this work include understanding of disabled athletes' needs, design considerations for adaptive sportswear development, and found benefits and challenges of technology use. Fashion FUNdamentals (FF), a STEM enrichment program for middle school girls, offers an alternative approach to STEM education by invoking "fashion" as a catalyst to ignite curiosity about STEM. This study explored whether participation in FF enhanced girls' self-efficacy, knowledge, and interest in math and science. At the conclusion of the program, participants in FF demonstrated higher scores on measures of self-efficacy in math and science and knowledge in math. Girls' self-efficacy in math and science positively predicted their interest in STEM. Focus group data revealed that some girls demonstrated enthusiasm for science and acquired science knowledge specific to FF.

(1) Background: limited data exist regarding the occurrence of hypotension associated with dexmedetomidine use and its risk factors in the context of intraoperative sedation for patients receiving peripheral nerve blocks. (2) Method: This single-center retrospective study assessed the incidence of hypotension in patients undergoing orthopedic upper extremity surgery with brachial plexus blockade. Patients were classified into three groups: group N (non-sedated), group M (midazolam), and group D (dexmedetomidine), based on their primary intraoperative sedative use. The primary outcome was the incidence of perioperative hypotension, defined as systolic blood pressure (SBP) < 90 mmHg or mean blood pressure (MBP) < 60 mmHg, at a minimum of two recorded time points during the intraoperative period and post-anesthesia care unit stay. Multivariable logistic models for the occurrence of hypotension were constructed for the entire cohort and group D. (3) Results: A total of 2152 cases (group N = 445, group M = 678, group D = 1029) were included in the analysis. The odds ratio for the occurrence of hypotension in group D was 5.68 (95% CI, 2.86 to 11.28) compared with group N. Concurrent use of a beta blocker, longer duration of surgery, and lower preoperative SBP and higher preoperative heart rate were identified as significant risk factors. Background Global cholera control efforts rely heavily on effective water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) interventions in cholera-endemic settings. Methods Using data from a large, randomized controlled trial of oral cholera vaccine conducted in Kolkata, India, we evaluated whether natural variations in WASH in an urban slum setting were predictive of cholera risk. From the control population (n = 55 086), baseline WASH data from a randomly selected "training subpopulation" (n = 27 634) were analyzed with recursive partitioning to develop a dichotomous ("better" vs "not better") composite household WASH variable from several WASH features collected at baseline, and this composite variable was then evaluated in a mutually exclusive "validation population" (n = 27 452). We then evaluated whether residents of better WASH households in the entire population (n = 55 086) experienced lower cholera risk using Cox regression models. Better WASH was defined by a combination of 4 dichotomized WASH characteristics including safe source of water for daily use, safe source of drinking water, private or shared flush toilet use, and always handwashing with soap after defecation. Results Residence in better WASH households was associated with a 30% reduction in risk of cholera over a 5-year period (adjusted hazard ratio, 0.70 [95% confidence interval,.49–.99]; P =.048). We also found that the impact of better WASH households on reducing cholera risk was greatest in young children (0–4 years) and this effect progressively declined with age. Conclusions The evidence suggests that modest improvements in WASH facilities and behaviors significantly modify cholera risk and may be an important component of cholera prevention and elimination strategies in endemic settings. The purpose of this study was to map the actuating performance of knitted SMA modules, and propose design guidelines for developing optimal SMA actuators, to be used in wearable assistive devices, suitable to be worn on the human body. To validate the findings of this study in the real world, we adopted an assistive rehabilitation glove for hemiplegic patients as a particular design case. To characterize the bending and contractile properties of knitted SMA modules, we conducted actuating performance tests with 720 knitted SMA samples under various conditions in actuation force, bending angle, contraction, electric power, and surface temperature. Based on the results, we proposed design guidelines by aligning the actuating performance of knitted SMA modules with joint mobility of hemiplegic patients for a smart rehabilitation glove. We anticipate that the outcomes of this study will serve as a practical yardstick for researchers in determining the desired actuating performance of a knitted SMA module that can support and assist the joint motion of the human body, when designing a wearable assistive device. Out-toeing gait may cause alterations in lower limb biomechanics that could lead to an increased risk of overuse injuries. Surgery and physical therapy are conventional methods for mitigating such gait, but they are costly and time-consuming. Wearable devices like braces and orthoses are used as affordable alternatives, but they apply non-negligible stress on the skin. Haptic feedback-delivering shoes were also recently developed, but they require actuators and power sources. The purpose of our study is to develop compression tights with inward directing taping lines that apply compression to lower limb muscles and segments to facilitate inward rotation of the foot, overcoming the drawbacks of previous methods. These compression tights were manufactured to fit the average height, leg length, hip girth, and waist girth of South Korean females in their twenties. The efficacy of these compression tights was evaluated by comparing walking kinematics and user satisfaction of 12 female dancers with an out-toeing gait under three conditions: wearing tights with taping lines, tights without taping lines, and basic bicycle shorts. The foot rotation angles and joint kinematics were recorded using a pressure-pad treadmill and motion capture system, respectively. Multiple pairwise comparisons revealed that the compression tights with inward-directing lines significantly reduced foot rotation angles (up to an average of 20.1%) compared with the bicycle shorts (p = 0.002 and 0.001 for dominant and non-dominant foot, respectively) or the compression tights without taping lines (p = 0.005 and p = 0.001 for dominant and non-dominant foot, respectively). Statistical parametric mapping revealed significant main effects of the tight type on joint kinematics. Also, t-tests revealed that the participants reported significantly higher ratings of perceived functionality and usability on the compression tights with inward-directing taping lines. In conclusion, we developed a comfortable and practical apparel-type wearable and demonstrated its short-term efficacy in mitigating out-toeing gait. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: There is a lack of biomarkers for predicting the response to chemotherapy in gastric cancer (GC). This study investigates the prognostic significance of PD-1 expression in CD8+ T cells in the blood of 68 patients with advanced GC receiving platinum-based chemotherapy. Patients were divided based on baseline frequencies of PD-1+CD8+ T cells and whether these frequencies increased or decreased on day 7 after treatment. While baseline frequencies of PD-1+CD8+ T cells had no impact on survival, the patients whose frequencies of PD-1+CD8+ T cells increased on day 7 from the treatment initiation showed significantly longer survival than those whose frequencies of PD-1+CD8+ T cells decreased. This difference was also reflected in the mean duration of response between the groups. These findings suggest that an early increase in frequencies of PD-1+CD8+ T cells could predict favorable prognoses and durable responses in patients with advanced GC receiving chemotherapy. The clinical significance of PD-1 expression in circulating CD8+ T cells in patients with gastric cancer (GC) receiving chemotherapy remains unelucidated. Therefore, we aimed to examine its prognostic significance in blood samples of 68 patients with advanced GC who received platinum-based chemotherapy. The correlation between peripheral blood mononuclear cells, measured using fluorescence-activated cell sorting, was evaluated. Patients were divided into two groups according to the changes in PD-1+CD8+ T-cell frequencies between day 0 and 7. They were categorized as increased or decreased PD-1+CD8+ T-cell groups. The increased PD-1+CD8+ T-cell group showed longer progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) than the decreased PD-1+CD8+ T-cell group (PFS: 8.7 months vs. 6.1 months, p = 0.007; OS: 20.7 months vs. 10.8 months, p = 0.003). The mean duration of response was significantly different between the groups (5.7 months vs. 2.5 months, p = 0.041). Multivariate analysis revealed that an increase in PD-1+CD8+ T-cell frequency was an independent prognostic factor. We concluded that the early increase in PD-1+CD8+ T-cell frequency is a potential predictor of favorable prognoses and durable responses in patients with advanced GC receiving chemotherapy. High-collar shoes are a biomimetic approach to preventing lateral ankle injuries during high-demand activities; however, the influence of collar stiffness (CS) on parameters related to lateral ankle sprain prevention during running remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of a custom-designed shoe CS on muscular activity, dynamic stability, and leg stiffness (Kleg) during running using a biomimetic design approach inspired by the mechanisms of ankle sprain prevention. Sixteen healthy male participants ran on a treadmill while wearing a custom-designed high-collar shoe with low, medium, and high CS conditions, measured using circumferential ankle pressure (CAP). Lower extremity kinematics and electromyography (EMG) data were recorded simultaneously. One-way repeated-measures ANOVA was conducted to compare the CS conditions. Results indicate that high and medium CS conditions significantly reduce sagittal and frontal ankle ranges of motion (ROMs) compared to the low CS condition, providing improved stability and support against lateral ankle sprain; moreover, there was a trend towards higher dynamic stability and Kleg with increasing CS. Our study highlights the importance of considering the CAP in regulating high-collar stiffness properties and how higher CS may provide better support for the ankle during running. We developed a machine learning algorithm (MLA) that can classify human thyroid cell clusters by exploiting both Papanicolaou staining and intrinsic refractive index (RI) as correlative imaging contrasts and evaluated the effects of this combination on diagnostic performance. Thyroid fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) specimens were analyzed using correlative optical diffraction tomography, which can simultaneously measure both, the color brightfield of Papanicolaou staining and three-dimensional RI distribution. The MLA was designed to classify benign and malignant cell clusters using color images, RI images, or both. We included 1535 thyroid cell clusters (benign: malignancy = 1128:407) from 124 patients. Accuracies of MLA classifiers using color images, RI images, and both were 98.0%, 98.0%, and 100%, respectively. As information for classification, the nucleus size was mainly used in the color image; however, detailed morphological information of the nucleus was also used in the RI image. We demonstrate that the present MLA and correlative FNAB imaging approach has the potential for diagnosing thyroid cancer, and complementary information from color and RI images can improve the performance of the MLA. The purpose of this study is to explore the effectiveness of 3D simulation technology for enhancing spatial visualization skills in apparel design education and further to suggest an innovative teaching approach using the technology. Apparel design majors in an introductory patternmaking course, at a large Midwestern University in the United States, participated in this study. Three different teaching methods (lecture, 3D simulation instruments, and paper patternmaking) were employed in consecutive instructional phases, within a single day. A short questionnaire devised to assess students' visualization abilities and overall evaluation on the three different teaching methods was administered to the students after each of the three phases. Overall, students' abilities to visualize 2D patterns onto a human body were improved by all three teaching methods. The 3D simulation instruments anchored positive effects of training on spatial visualization abilities between lecture and paper patternmaking practices. The results affirm that 3D simulation technology has positive potential as an efficient instructional tool for improving students' visualization skills in apparel design.

A fundamental and contemporary issue in higher education is how to encourage global awareness, professional development, and accountability within constraints of curriculum and scarce resources. This is an evaluation of student experiences with a 1 1/2-year cross-cultural partnership that included a team project, public presentations, publications, and 2-week travel exchanges. Data were collected from the participant's project outcomes, from interviews pre- and posttravel, and survey questions at the end of the experience and 1 year later. The public face to the project allowed for partners to learn of the professional standards of the other culture while representing their own. Partner synergies were evidence of a personal, professional, and cultural awareness that provided a pathway to encourage cross-cultural learning among students in similar fields. Such cross-cultural experiences will help to ensure professional survival in the 21st century.

Background: The shoe's collar plays a significant role in supporting the ankle during walking. Since the protective effect of the collar requires the circular embracing of the ankle and shank, a stiffer collar might be involved with increased circumferential ankle pressure (CAP). It is not clear how collar CAP affects walking performance. Therefore, this study was aimed at examining the influence of the collar CAP on the kinematics, dynamic stability, electromyography (EMG), and plantar pressure during normal walking. Method: Sixteen healthy male participants walked on a treadmill while wearing a custom-designed high-collar shoe with 10 (low), 30 (medium), and 60 mmHg (high) CAP conditions, and the joint angles, dynamic stability index, EMG, and plantar pressure were measured. Result: While the low CAP condition did not affect the ankle range of motion (ROM), The high CAP condition restricted both the ankle sagittal and frontal ROM, whereas the medium CAP condition limited only the ankle frontal ROM. The knee and hip ROM did not differ between conditions. The dynamic stability for the high and medium CAP cases was comparable but significantly higher than that of the low CAP condition. The ankle muscle activity and corresponding co-contraction increased with increasing CAP for gastrocnemius medialis (GM), soleus (SOL), peroneus longus (PL), tibialis anterior (TA) muscles in the weight acceptance and push-off phases but not in the single limb support. Knee muscle activity, including vastus lateralis (VL) and semitendinosus (SEMI) was similar between all conditions. A higher relative pressure was observed under the lateral aspect of the heel when walking in the high CAP condition. Conclusion: The results suggest that a high-collar shoe with a high CAP may not be an appropriate choice for walking owing to the injury risk factors and limited walking efficiency. Simple Summary: Recent studies have sought to evaluate early oncogenic signaling in EGFR-mutant lung cancers under EGFR-TKI treatment, but few studies have evaluated the effect of the tumor microenvironment on persistent tumor cells under EGFR-TKI treatment. Our study demonstrates that CXCL10, a representative inflamed immune-response cytokine, activates CXCR3 in tumor cells to induce the phosphorylation of Src and the NF-κB subunit, p65, and the expression of HIF1-α in persistent EGFR-mutant tumor cells during EGFR-TKI treatment. We further reveal that the CXCL10/CXCR3 signaling of tumor cells is augmented via an autocrine pathway. Our study reveals that the EGFR-TKI-treatment-related oncogenic pathway changes contributing to EGFR-TKI resistance in EGFR-mutant NSCLC are paradoxically attributed to the targeting of tumor cells by an activated immune system. CXCL10 is a cytokine that is elevated during EGFR-TKI treatment in the tumor microenvironment of lung cancer. Here, we report an original study that the impact of the CXCL10/CXCR3 pathway on EGFR-TKI resistance in EGFR-mutant lung cancer through a cytokine array analysis during in vitro coculture with tumor cells and activated PBMCs treated with EGFR-TKI, as well as the serial analysis of CXCL10 in EGFR-mutant lung cancer transgenic mice during EGFR-TKI treatment. In EGFR-mutant tumor cells cocultured with activated PBMCs, EGFR-TKI treatment increased CXCL10 in the supernatant; this activated CXCR3 in the tumor cells to induce the phosphorylation of Src and the NF-κB subunit, p65, and the expression of HIF-1α. CXCL10 siRNA treatment of EGFR-mutant tumor cells also decreased CXCL10 in the supernatant from coculturing with activated PBMCs, suggesting that the effects of CXCL10 occur via autocrine and paracrine pathways. Importantly, elevated CXCL10/CXCR3 signaling was recapitulated in a transgenic lung cancer mouse model. Our results show that increased CXCL10 levels during early EGFR-TKI treatment stimulate oncogenic signaling of persistent tumor cells to contribute to EGFR-TKI resistance via autocrine and paracrine pathways. We aimed to identify fit and comfort issues associated with the case company's body armour and suggest recommendations to mitigate the issues, guided by the integrated three-stage process model for codesign. Thirteen collaborators participated in the codesign practice, including eight company employees (ICs) and five local police officers (ECs). This study adopted one-on-one interviews, focus groups, 3D body scanning and occupational task assessment. In Stage 1, we identified the problems with the existing body armour and areas of improvement based on the inputs from the ICs and ECs. The design solutions for the defined needs were sought in Stage 2. In Stage 3, the final outcomes were validated and approved by the collaborators. The results from this study provided the case company practical guidance to improve the body armour design, and further offer a new means of involving diverse stakeholders' voices and perspectives in the product design and development process.
