A recent taxonomic revision of the Malagasy Scops-Owl (Otus rutilus) recognized two distinct endemic species on the island based on plumage, vocal, and morphological characters: O. rutilus (sensu stricto) from eastern humid forest formations and O. madagascariensis from western dry forest areas. An evaluation of these characters calls into question their validity for taxonomic studies, as they may be ecologically linked. To independently assess the two-species hypothesis, we used sequence data from 1449 base pairs (bp) of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from 34 scops-owls obtained across the range of these two putative species. Nineteen haplotypes were detected, four of which were shared by more than one individual. Maximum sequence divergence was 0.6% (mean = 0.24%). While the most common haplotype was shared by 10 individuals originating from different eastern and western localities, 12 haplotypes were exclusive to O. rutilus and five to O. madagascariensis. An analvsis of molecular variance showed significant partitioning of the genetic variability between O. rutilus and O. madagascariensis. The estimate of the divergence time between populations associated with the names O. rutilus and O. madagascariensis was 8070 years BP. Based on haplotype frequencies and sequence divergence, we conclude that there are two populations of Otus on Madagascar that started to diverge in recent geological time following an ecological parapatric model, perhaps associated with Quaternary climatic shifts. Using these results, it is inappropriate to recognize two species of Otus on Madagascar. Key words: coalescent analyses, Madagascar, mitochondrial DNA, Otus, phylogeography, two-species hypothesis. Con base en caracteres del plumaje, vocales y morfologicos, una revision taxonomica reciente del buho Otus rutilus reconoce dos especies distintas endemicas de Madagascar: O. rutilus (sensu stricto), de las formaciones de bosque humedo del este, y O. madagascariensis, de las areas de bosque seco del oeste. Una evaluacion de estos caracteres conduce a cuestionar su validez para estudios taxonomicos debido a que estos pueden estar ecologicamente relacionados. Para comprobar de forma independiente la hipotesis de la existencia de dos especies, usamos datos de secuencias de 1449 pares de bases de ADN mitocondrial obtenidas para 34 individuos de Otus rutilus colectados a traves del rango de distribucion de las dos especies hipoteticas. Se detectaron 19 haplotipos, de los cuales cuatro fueron compartidos entre individuos. La divergencia maxima entre secuencias fue del 0.6% (promedio = 0.24%). El haplotipo mas comun fue compartido por diez individuos originarios de localidades del este y del oeste, mientras que doce haplotipos se observaron exclusivamente en O. rutilus y cinco en O. madagascariensis. Un analisis de varianza molecular mostro una particion significativa de la variabilidad genetica entre O. rutilus y O. madagascariensis. La estimacion del tiempo de divergencia entre las poblaciones asociadas con el nombre de O. rutilus y O. madagaseariensis fue de 8070 anos antes del presente. Con base en las frecuencias haplotipicas y la divergencia entre secuencias, concluimos que hay dos poblaciones de Otus en Madagascar que comenzaron a divergir en un tiempo geologico reciente siguiendo un modelo parapatrico, quizas asociado con los cambios climaticos del Cuaternario. Utilizando estos resultados, reconocer dos especies de Otus en Madagascar es inapropiado.

Abstract Background The island of Madagascar and surrounding volcanic and coralline islands are considered to form a biodiversity hotspot with large numbers of unique taxa. The origin of this endemic fauna can be explained by two different factors: vicariance or over-water-dispersal. Deciphering which factor explains the current distributional pattern of a given taxonomic group requires robust phylogenies as well as estimates of divergence times. The lineage of Indian Ocean scops-owls (Otus: Strigidae) includes six or seven species that are endemic to Madagascar and portions of the Comoros and Seychelles archipelagos; little is known about the species limits, biogeographic affinities and relationships to each other. In the present study, using DNA sequence data gathered from six loci, we examine the biogeographic history of the Indian Ocean scops-owls. We also compare the pattern and timing of colonization of the Indian Ocean islands by scops-owls with divergence times already proposed for other bird taxa. Results Our analyses revealed that Indian Ocean islands scops-owls do not form a monophyletic assemblage: the Seychelles Otus insularis is genetically closer to the South-East Asian endemic O. sunia than to species from the Comoros and Madagascar. The Pemba Scops-owls O. pembaensis, often considered closely related to, if not conspecific with O. rutilus of Madagascar, is instead closely related to the African mainland O. senegalensis. Relationships among the Indian Ocean taxa from the Comoros and Madagascar are unresolved, despite the analysis of over 4000 bp, suggesting a diversification burst after the initial colonization event. We also highlight one case of putative back-colonization to the Asian mainland from an island ancestor (O. sunia). Our divergence date estimates, using a Bayesian relaxed clock method, suggest that all these events occurred during the last 3.6 myr; albeit colonization of the Indian Ocean islands were not synchronous, O. pembaensis diverged from O. senegalensis about 1.7 mya while species from Madagascar and the Comoro diverged from their continental sister-group about 3.6 mya. We highlight that our estimates coincide with estimates of diversification from other bird lineages. Conclusion Our analyses revealed the occurrence of multiple synchronous colonization events of the Indian Ocean islands by scops-owls, at a time when faunistic exchanges involving Madagascar was common as a result of lowered sea-level that would have allowed the formation of stepping-stone islands. Patterns of diversification that emerged from the scops-owls data are: 1) a star-like pattern concerning the order of colonization of the Indian Ocean islands and 2) the high genetic distinctiveness among all Indian Ocean taxa, reinforcing their recognition as distinct species.

The Pacific Ocean is the site of the most important diversification of insular reed warblers (Acrocephalus). In the Marquesas Islands (Eastern Polynesia), reed warblers belong to two distinct lineages that have reached the archipelago independently. We used mitochondrial sequences and microsatellite markers and found evidence of gene flow between the two lineages. One island in particular, Nuku Hiva, seems to act as the main contact zone between the two taxa. We then used reflectance spectrometry to evaluate the variation of carotenoid colouration among all populations. Marquesan reed warblers exhibit convergent evolution in carotenoid-based plumage colouration, but variation among islands was important. Having two different phylogenetic origins, the two lineages acquired their yellow colour independently and there is stochastic variation in plumage among islands. Finally, we analysed the songs of reed warblers from the main islands. Multifactorial analysis showed that vocalisations of Marquesan reed warblers differ slightly between species, significant differences between islands leading to different dialects. Vocal characteristics may act as the main pre-zygotic barriers when birds from different lineages come into contact. This study provides another example of convergence in plumage evolution in insular bird species. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of integrative analyses, using both genetic and phenotypical characters, for the study of the evolutionary history of the Pacific Ocean avifauna. Anthropogenic activities, such as agricultural intensification, caused large declines in biodiversity, including farmland birds. In addition to demographic consequences, anthropogenic activities can result in loss of genetic diversity, reduction of gene flow and altered genetic structure. We investigated the distribution of the genetic variation of a declining farmland and long-distance migratory bird, the ortolan bunting Emberiza hortulana, across its European breeding range to assess the impact of human-driven population declines on genetic diversity and structure in order to advise conservation priorities. The large population declines observed have not resulted in dramatic loss of genetic diversity, which is moderate to high and constant across all sampled breeding sites. Extensive gene flow occurs across the breeding range, even across a migratory divide, which contributes little to genetic structuring. However, gene flow is asymmetric, with the large eastern populations acting as source populations for the smaller western ones. Furthermore, breeding populations that underwent the largest declines, in Fennoscandia and Baltic countries, appear to be recently isolated, with no gene exchange occurring with the eastern or the western populations. These are signs for concern as declines in the eastern populations could affect the strength of gene flow and in turn affect the western populations. The genetic, and demographic, isolation of the northern populations make them particularly sensitive to loss of genetic diversity and to extinction as no immigration is occurring to counter-act the drastic declines. In such a situation, conservation efforts are needed across the whole breeding range: in particular, protecting the eastern populations due to their key role in maintaining gene flow across the range, and focussing on the northern populations due to their recent isolation and endangered status. The patterns of colonisation and phylogenetic relationships of the swiftlets from Oceania, and in particular from the remotest archipelagos of Polynesia, remain a puzzle. In this study we used mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequence data to infer the colonisation patterns of swiftlets endemic to Eastern Polynesia. The three endemic taxa did not form a monophyletic group. The Tahiti Swiftlet (Aerodramus leucophaeus) and the Marquesan Swiftlet (A. ocistus) were closely related to the group formed by the Himalayan Swiftlet (A. brevirostris) and the two Indian Ocean species, Seychelles Swiftlet (A. elaphrus) and Mascarene Swiftlet (A. francicus). The third taxon from Eastern Polynesia, the Atiu Swiftlet (A. sawtelli) from the Cook Islands, forms a group with the Mariana Swiftlet (A. bartschi), and the Uniform Swiftlet (A. vanikorensis), a widely distributed species, from the Philippines to Melanesia. Thus the colonisation of the remotest areas of Oceania by swiftlets occurred through long-distance events, as opposed to a regular, stepping-stone pattern from the west to the east. These results add to the body of evidence suggesting that Eastern Polynesia constituted a ‘sink’, from which birds did not come back to recolonise western islands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: DNA phylogenies have gradually shed light on the phylogenetic relationships of the large babbler group. We focus in this study on the family Leiothrichidae (laughingthrushes and “song babblers”), which represents the largest clade of babblers in terms of species diversity. Our phylogeny includes all genera and 82% of the recognized species, using mitochondrial and nuclear loci. The sister group to Leiothrichidae is composed of the Pellorneidae (“jungle babblers”) plus the genus Alcippe. Within Leiothrichidae, four strongly supported primary clades (A–D) are recovered. Clade A includes Grammatoptila, Laniellus and Cutia. Clade B includes a large group of laughingthrushes, all of them classified in Trochalopteron. In Clade C, the two laughingthrushes endemic to southern India, T. fairbanki and T. cachinnans, which have recently been proposed to be placed in the newly erected genus Montecincla, form a sister clade to the group comprising the “song babblers” (Lioptila, Leiothrix, Heterophasia, Minla, Liocichla, Actinodura, Chrysominla, Siva, and Sibia). Clade D includes the African babblers (Turdoides, Phyllanthus, Kupeornis), Asian relatives (Argya, Acanthoptila, Chatarrhaea) and all remaining laughingthrushes (Garrulax). The time estimates suggest that the early diversification of the Leiothrichidae occurred in the mid‐Miocene, a period that corresponds to the diversification of many passerine groups in Asia. The recently described Bare‐faced Bulbul Pycnonotus hualon from Lao PDR has a very distinct morphology and habitat (karsts). Mitochondrial and nuclear data from the type material demonstrated that P. hualon is sister to members of the genus Spizixos. The Long-billed Tailorbird ( Artisornis moreaui ), one of Africa’s rarest birds, has a strikingly disjunct distribution, the origin of which has long puzzled biogeographers. One small population (subspecies moreaui ) occurs in sub-montane forest in the East Usambara Mountains, a sky island near the coast of northern Tanzania, and another (subspecies sousae ) on Serra Jeci in northwestern Mozambique, 950 km away. The African Tailorbird, the putative sister-species of Long-billed Tailorbird, also occurs in the East Usambara Mountains and on Serra Jeci, but in addition occupies all the Eastern Arc Mountain forests between these disjunct sites. Stuart (1981) hypothesized that the two tailorbird distributions could be explained by strong ecological competition, with African Tailorbird populations having eliminated Long-billed Tailorbird populations via competitive exclusion in montane forests between the East Usambara and Serra Jeci. If such competitive exclusion explains these geographic distributions, the co-occurrence of the two species in the East Usambara and at Serra Jeci may be ephemeral, with the status of Long-billed Tailorbird especially in doubt. We sought to (1) determine whether the two species of African tailorbirds are indeed sister-species, and (2) test predictions from Stuart’s (1981) competitive exclusion hypothesis using genetic data. Phylogenetic analyses of our seven gene dataset (3 mtDNA, 4 introns; 4784 bp) indeed place these two species together in the genus Artisornis . Instead of finding shallow divergence among African Tailorbird populations and deep divergence between Long-billed Tailorbird populations as expected from Stuart’s hypothesis, we recover deep genetic divergence and geographic structure among populations of both tailorbird species. This result is consistent with long-term co-existence of the two species at East Usambara and Serra Jeci. Observational data from both the East Usambara and Serra Jeci suggest that the two species have diverged in use of forest canopy strata. From a conservation standpoint, our results suggest that extinction of the Long-billed Tailorbird as a function of competition with African Tailorbird is highly unlikely, and should not be viewed as imminent. Threats to its survival are instead anthropogenic, and conservation measures should take this into account. Finally, our empirical results suggest that mis-specification of the branch-length prior in Bayesian analyses of mitochondrial DNA data can have a profound effect on the overall tree-length (sum of branch-lengths), whereas the topology and support values tend to remain more stable. In contrast, mis-specification of the branch-length prior had a lesser impact on all aspects of the nuclear-only DNA analyses. The Eurasian Nuthatch (Sitta europaeaLinnaeus, 1758) is a resident bird in the Alborz and Zagros deciduous forests. We investigated the phylogenetic relationships and the taxonomic position of the Eurasian Nuthatch among other separated lineages of Eurasia with the help of blood samples collected from 19 individuals belonging to four populations in the Eastern and Western Alborz, as well as in the Northern and Southern Zagros forests. Genetic variation was then analysed using complete ND2 gene sequence (1041 bp) and phylogenetic analysis was done using Bayesian and maximum likelihood inference. Additionally, a median-joining algorithm was used to reveal the relationships among haplotypes. The results of the phylogenetic and haplo-type network analyses indicated that Eurasian Nuthatch haplotypes from the Alborz and Zagros Mountains form lineages distinct from the Asian, Caucasian and European haplotypes. Furthermore, an analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) detected significant (P<0.001) genetic structure among the lineages. The Asian, European, Caucasian and Alborz lineages diverged from one another by an uncorrected genetic distance ranging from 0.029 to 0.039, while the Zagros lineage showed a slightly lower genetic divergence from the Caucasian lineage (0.006), but it did not share any haplotype with the Caucasian lineage. Leucocarbo shags are a species-rich seabird clade exhibiting a southern circumpolar distribution. New Zealand's endemic Stewart Island shag, Leucocarbo chalconotus (G. R. Gray, 1845), comprises two regional groups (Otago and Foveaux Strait) that show consistent differences in relative frequencies between pied (black and white) and bronze (wholly dark) plumages, the extent and colour of facial carunculation, body size (based on postcranial morphometrics), and breeding season. Moreover, previous genetic research on modern and historical specimens utilizing mitochondrial DNA control-region sequences has also shown that the Otago and Foveaux lineages may not be sister taxa; instead, in several analyses the Otago lineage is sister to the endemic Chatham Island shag, Leucocarbo onslowi (Forbes, 1893). We present new ancient DNA analyses of the type specimens for the Otago and Foveaux Strait lineages of L. chalconotus, including a phylogenetic reanalysis of the available ancient, historical, and modern control-region sequence data for these lineages (including L. onslowi), and additional statistical analyses incorporating new morphometric characters. These analyses indicate that under the diagnosable species concept the two lineages of Stewart Island shag represent two separate species, which we now recognize as the Otago shag, L. chalconotus (G. We used a mitochondrial and nuclear DNA phylogeny to evaluate the relationships among all noddies ( Anous and Procelsterna, Laridae) and to clarify their classification. The Lesser Noddy Anous tenuirostris and Black Noddy Anous minutus form a pair of closely related sister-species, as do the Blue Noddy Procelsterna albivitta and Grey Noddy Procelsterna cerulea. Blue and Grey Noddies are embedded within the dark noddies and are the sister-clade to the Lesser and Black Noddies, indicating that the genus Anous in its current definition is not monophyletic. Thus, we propose to merge all noddies into the genus Anous Stephens , and to consider Procelsterna Lafresnaye as a junior synonym. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Indo-Malayan bioregion has provided some of the most spectacular discoveries of new vertebrate species (e.g. saola, khanyou, bare-faced bulbul) over the last 25 years. Yet, very little is known about the processes that led to the current biodiversity in this region. We reconstructed the phylogeographic history of a group of closely related passerines, the Alophoixus bulbuls. These birds are continuously distributed in Indo-Malaya around the Thailand lowlands such that their distribution resembles a ring. Our analyses revealed a single colonization event of the mainland from Sundaland with sequential divergence of taxa from southwest to northeast characterized by significant gene flow between parapatric taxa, and reduced or ancient gene flow involving the two taxa at the extremities of the ring. We detected evidence of population expansion in two subspecies, including one that was involved in the closing of the ring. Hence, our analyses indicate that the diversification pattern of Alophoixus bulbuls fits a ring species model driven by geographic isolation. To our knowledge, the Alophoixus bulbuls represent the first case of a putative broken ring species complex in Indo-Malaya. The Nightingale Reed-Warbler (Acrocephalus luscinius) is known from six islands of the Mariana Archipelago in the Pacific Ocean. A recent phylogeny of the reed-warblers of the Pacific islands suggested however that the species was polyphyletic, the result of at least three independent colonisations. We present here a complete phylogeny of the Mariana reed-warblers that includes two populations, from Alamagan and Aguiguan, not yet studied using molecular techniques. Both of these populations belong to the Pacific Acrocephalus radiation, with birds from Alamagan closely related to the Saipan population, and those from Aguiguan having unresolved relationships within the Micronesian clade. These results suggest that the Mariana Islands experienced multiple colonisations by reed-warblers. We use a combination of molecular phylogeny and biometry of museum specimens to propose a new species-level taxonomy for Acrocephalus of the Marianas. These results have conservation implications for the two remaining populations, on Alamagan and Saipan, which probably belong to the same taxon, Acrocephalus hiwae (Nightingale Reed-Warbler). With only a single extant representative, endemic to the Tuamotu Archipelago, the Polynesian sandpipers ( Aechmorhynchus and Prosobonia) may have had a larger distribution in Eastern Polynesia in the past, with four endemic taxa. Although these aberrant sandpipers' membership to the Scolocapidae has been well supported, finding their closest living taxa has proved difficult and the phylogenetic relationships of these taxa have remained unresolved. We present the first molecular analysis of the Polynesian sandpipers, including sampling of the only known specimen of the extinct Prosobonia leucoptera, collected in 1773. Based on mitochondrial and nuclear gene sequence data, the phylogenetic analyses demonstrate that the Polynesian sandpipers were sister taxa and belonged to the clade that included the other sandpipers ( Calidris and allies) and turnstones ( Arenaria), although without a close relative among extant genera. Divergence time estimates suggested that the lineage leading to Prosobonia diverged from the other extant sandpipers during the Oligocene and that either the Line Islands or the Tuamotu Archipelago were probably the first archipelagos colonized by the Prosobonia lineage. On the basis of these results, we suggest that Aechmorhynchus parvirostris and Prosobonia leucoptera be regarded as related species within the same genus, and thus that the senior name Prosobonia be used for both taxa. The patterns of genetic variation and the systematics of members of the widespread Old World genus Monticola (Family Muscicapidae) occurring on Madagascar remain unresolved. Herein, we address these questions by examining the phylogeography of Malagasy Monticola using two molecular markers ( ND2 and ATP6, 1.5 kb) from 60 individuals sampled across their known range. To clarify the relationships within the clade groupings, we use a statistical haplotype network and an analysis of the genetic structure of the different populations sampled. A morphological study was conducted in parallel that used many of the same individuals employed in the molecular study to examine potential differences between the recovered clades. Based on molecular genetics and morphology, M. imerinus is distinct from the M. sharpei complex, which is composed of five phylogroups: Group A (Central Highlands, typical sharpei), Group B (Central West, Bemaraha), Group C (Northern Highlands), Group D (Montagne d'Ambre, erythronotus) and Group E (Southwestern, bensoni). While molecular data show high levels of geographical structure, these differences exhibit low levels of intergroup genetic divergence (0.01-0.07%). We suggest that two species of Monticola occur on Madagascar, imerinus and sharpei, and the forms referable to bensoni and erythronotus, as well as unnamed populations from the Central West (Bemahara), should be considered as part of M. sharpei and are populations that are probably isolated and undergoing incipient speciation. Abstract: Recent molecular studies on passerine birds have highlighted numerous discrepancies between traditional classification and the phylogenetic relationships recovered from sequence data. Among the traditional families that were shown to be highly polyphyletic are the Muscicapidae Old World flycatcher. This family formerly included all Old World passerines that forage on small insects by performing short sallies from a perch. Genera previously allocated to the Muscicapidae are now thought to belong to at least seven unrelated lineages. While the peculiarity of most of these lineages has been previously recognized by Linnean classification, usually at the rank of families, one, the so-called Stenostiridae, a clade comprising three Afrotropical and Indo-Malayan genera, has only recently been discovered. Here, we address in greater detail the phylogenetic relationships and biogeographic history of the Stenostiridae using a combination of mitochondrial and nuclear data. Our analyses revealed that one species, Rhipidura hypoxantha, previously attributed to the Rhipiduridae (fantails), is in fact a member of the Stenostiridae radiation and sister to the South African endemic genus Stenostira (Fairy Flycatcher). Our dating analyses, performed in a relative-time framework, suggest that the splits between Stenostira/R. hypoxantha and Culicicapa/Elminia occurred synchronously. Given that the Stenostiridae assemblage has been consistently recovered by independent studies, we clarify its taxonomic validity under the rules of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. Babblers, family Timaliidae, have long been subject to debate on systematic position, family limits and internal taxonomy. In this study, we use five molecular regions to estimate the relationships among a large proportion of genera traditionally placed in Timaliidae. We find good support for five main clades within this radiation, and propose a new classification, dividing the babblers into the families Sylviidae and Timaliidae. Within the latter family, four subfamilies are recognized: Zosteropinae, Timaliinae, Pellorneinae and Leiothrichinae. Several taxa, previously not studied with molecular data, are phylogenetically placed within Sylviidae or Timaliidae. The genus Elminia has had a jumbled taxonomic history, being placed among ‘old world flycatchers’ or ‘monarch flycatchers’, where it was for a long time lumped with Trochocercus. It was recently suggested that it might represent a deep clade in the large sylvioid radiation. Using one mitochondrial protein-coding gene (ND2, 1041 bp) and one nuclear intron (myoglobin intron 2, 700 bp) DNA sequences, we obtained robust evidence for the phylogenetic placement of Elminia in the new family Stenostiridae, which is strongly supported by a synapomorphic insertion of one base in the nuclear myoglobin intron 2 sequence. Our analyses confirm the monophyly of Elminia and resolve relationships within this genus, but cannot confidently identify its sister-taxon within the stenostirid clade. Two clades were strongly supported within the genus Elminia: one with the two fairy blue flycatchers and another with the three white-tailed crested-flycatchers. Within the first clade, Elminia longicauda appears non-monophyletic but remains strongly related to E. albicauda. In the second clade, E. albiventris is sister to E. albonotata while the Dusky Crested Flycatcher ( E. nigromitrata) appears in a basal position within this clade. According to our molecular dating, several geological events in western Africa and the Albertine Rift area seem to be related to the historical distribution of Elminia. Thus, the differentiation between E. albonotata and E. albiventris could be directly related to the tectonic history of these two regions. The genus Apalis is a member of the African forest warblers clade of the Cisticolidae. In view of its morphological diversity, it was suggested that this genus needs a taxonomic revaluation. For this, we sequenced a nuclear intron (myoglobin intron 2) and two mitochondrial protein-coding genes ( ND2 and ND3). The 2016 bp of sequence data obtained were aligned and subjected to parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference. All three genes strongly reject the monophyly of Apalis but support the placing of all apalises within a broader clade of forest cisticolids which also includes Urolais. Within this forest clade, a subclade is defined which includes the genera Urolais, Schistolais and a well-supported clade comprising three afromontane species, the Black-collared Apalis Apalis pulchra, the Ruwenzori Apalis Apalis ruwenzorii and the African Tailorbird Artisornis. This subclade is sister to other members of Apalis, including the type species of the genus the Bar-throated Apalis Apalis thoracica. We used nuclear and mitochondrial genes to generate a phylogenetic hypothesis for the Palearctic–Oriental starlings and mynas (genera Sturnus, Acridotheres, Leucopsar, Creatophora and Fregilupus: Sturnidae). Our results indicate that the group has undergone a rapid diversification in Asia since the late Miocene. A reassessment of the morphological and ecological characters used in previous taxonomic revisions shows that all characters are highly homoplastic. We suggest that the elevated morphological and ecological plasticity favoured the adaptation of starlings and mynas to the local environment, the exploitation of all niches and their successful radiation in south-east Asia. Under the current limits the genera Sturnus and Acridotheres are not monophyletic, and we propose a revised phylogenetic taxonomy for the entire clade. We confirm that the extinct Fregilupus varius is a starling and it colonized Réunion Island (Mascarenes) by transoceanic dispersal from Asia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the Society archipelago (French Polynesia), Acrocephalus reed warblers are known only from four islands: Tahiti, Mo’orea, Huahine and Raiatea. All populations are now extinct except on Tahiti. Our knowledge of these birds is based on a small number of specimens preserved in museums, collected mostly during the 19th century. We present here a review of the past and present distribution, habitat and threats to the Society Islands reed warblers, including details on the specimens in museum collections. We compare the external morphology of the different populations, and use samples from museum specimens to propose a molecular phylogeny of all taxa based on partial cytochrome b gene sequences. The genetic data do not support the monophyly of the Society Islands reed warblers, which probably derived from three different lineages, found in Tahiti, Mo’orea and in the cluster Raiatea–Huahine. We outline the taxonomic consequences of this phylogeny. Background: The island of Madagascar and surrounding volcanic and coralline islands are considered to form a biodiversity hotspot with large numbers of unique taxa. The origin of this endemic fauna can be explained by two different factors: vicariance or over-water-dispersal. Deciphering which factor explains the current distributional pattern of a given taxonomic group requires robust phylogenies as well as estimates of divergence times. The lineage of Indian Ocean scops-owls (Otus: Strigidae) includes six or seven species that are endemic to Madagascar and portions of the Comoros and Seychelles archipelagos; little is known about the species limits, biogeographic affinities and relationships to each other. In the present study, using DNA sequence data gathered from six loci, we examine the biogeographic history of the Indian Ocean scops-owls. We also compare the pattern and timing of colonization of the Indian Ocean islands by scops-owls with divergence times already proposed for other bird taxa. Results: Our analyses revealed that Indian Ocean islands scops-owls do not form a monophyletic assemblage: the Seychelles Otus insularis is genetically closer to the South-East Asian endemic O. sunia than to species from the Comoros and Madagascar. The Pemba Scops-owls O. pembaensis, often considered closely related to, if not conspecific with O. rutilus of Madagascar, is instead closely related to the African mainland O. senegalensis. Relationships among the Indian Ocean taxa from the Comoros and Madagascar are unresolved, despite the analysis of over 4000 bp, suggesting a diversification burst after the initial colonization event. We also highlight one case of putative backcolonization to the Asian mainland from an island ancestor (O. sunia). Our divergence date estimates, using a Bayesian relaxed clock method, suggest that all these events occurred during the last 3.6 myr; albeit colonization of the Indian Ocean islands were not synchronous, O. pembaensis diverged from O. senegalensis about 1.7 mya while species from Madagascar and the Comoro diverged from their continental sister-group about 3.6 mya. We highlight that our estimates coincide with estimates of diversification from other bird lineages. Conclusion: Our analyses revealed the occurrence of multiple synchronous colonization events of the Indian Ocean islands by scops-owls, at a time when faunistic exchanges involving Madagascar was common as a result of lowered sea-level that would have allowed the formation of steppingstone islands. Patterns of diversification that emerged from the scops-owls data are: 1) a star-like pattern concerning the order of colonization of the Indian Ocean islands and 2) the high genetic distinctiveness among all Indian Ocean taxa, reinforcing their recognition as distinct species. Abstract: We address the phylogenetic relationships of the drongos (Dicruridae) at the species-level using sequences from two nuclear (myoglobin intron-2 and c-mos) and two mitochondrial (ND2 and cytochrome b) loci. The resulting phylogenetic tree shows that the most basal species is D. aeneus, followed in the tree by a trichotomy including (1) the Asian D. remifer, (2) a clade of all African and Indian Ocean islands species as well as two Asian species (D. macrocercus and D. leucophaeus) and (3) a clade that includes all other Asian species as well as two Australasian species (D. megarhynchus and D. bracteatus). Our phylogenetic hypotheses are compared to [Mayr, E., Vaurie, C., 1948. Evolution of the family Dicruridae (Birds). Evolution 2, 238–265.] hypothetical family “tree” based on traditional phenotypic analysis and biogeography. We point out a general discrepancy between the so-called “primitive” or “unspecialized” species and their position in the phylogenetic tree, although our results for other species are congruent with previous hypotheses. We conduct dating analyses using a relaxed-clock method, and propose a chronology of clades formation. A particular attention is given to the drongo radiation in Indian Ocean islands and to the extinction–invasion processes involved. The first large diversification of the family took place both in Asia and Africa at 11.9 and 13.3Myr, respectively, followed by a dispersal event from Africa to Asia at ca 10.6Myr; dispersal over Wallace line occurred later at ca 6Myr. At 5Myr, Principe and Indian Ocean Islands have been colonized from an African ancestor; the most recent colonization event concerned Anjouan by an immigrating population from Madagascar. The woodpeckers (Piciformes: Picinae) comprise a widely distributed and species-rich clade of birds that is strongly associated with trees for feeding, nesting, or both. Because of this association, woodpeckers provide a useful model for evaluating the impact of climatic and tectonic events on the diversification of forest birds during the Tertiary. In order to resolve the biogeographical history of the woodpeckers, we have analysed sequences from two nuclear introns and one mitochondrial gene using likelihood and Bayesian approaches. Our analyses favour a tropical Eurasian origin; divergences between African, Indo-Malayan and New World clades with subsequent colonizations of Africa and the New World occurred synchronously during the Middle Miocene, a period corresponding to the expansion of the C4 grasses and the uplift of the Himalayan-Tibetan plateau. The taxonomic diversification of woodpeckers at this time may be attributed to the fragmentation of forests in response to the drier climate, which in turn prevented gene flow between tropical stocks in Africa, Indo-Malaya and the New World. Our estimates of colonization times of South America predate the closure of the Panama Isthmus and support the hypothesis of a short-lived, terrestrial corridor at the end of the Miocene, 5.7 Myr BP. The phylogeny of fulvettas (Alcippe, Timaliidae) was investigated using molecular data. Fifteen species of the genus, other timaliids and Sylvioidea were used. ML and Bayesian analyses were done on separate and combined cyt-b and Nd2 DNA data sets. The polyphyly of the genus is confirmed. The clades correspond to the taxonomy of Wolters. We recommend that this polyphyly be taken into account when conducting phylogenetic analyses with incomplete taxonomic sampling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
