Abstract

Detecting and characterising vehicles is one of the purposes of embedded systems used in intelligent environments. An analysis of a vehicle characteristics can reveal inappropriate or dangerous behaviour. This detection makes it possible to sanction or notify emergency services to take early and practical actions. Vehicle detection and characterisation systems employ complex sensors such as video cameras, especially in urban environments. These sensors provide high precision and performance, although the price and computational requirements are proportional to their accuracy. These sensors offer high accuracy, but the price and computational requirements are directly proportional to their performance. This article introduces a system based on modular devices that is economical and has a low computational cost. These devices use ultrasonic sensors to detect the speed and length of vehicles. The measurement accuracy is improved through the collaboration of the device modules. The experiments were performed using multiple modules oriented to different angles. This module is coupled with another specifically designed to detect distance using previous modules speed and length data. The collaboration between different modules reduces the speed relative error ranges from 1 to 5, depending on the angle configuration used in the modules., Comment: 17 pages

Abstract

[EN] The management of people and vehicles mobility is an aspect of continuous study due to its contribution to pollution. Traffic light control determines the queues that can form at crossroads. Usually, this control is not adapted to the existing traffi at a specific time since the adaptation implies knowing the pedestrians and vehicles circulating at all times. This article proposes using modular intelligent devices that allow vehicles to be detected and access times to the intersection to be changed depending on the circumstances. A simulation has been carried out generating loads in MatLab and simulating the control with Simulink. A traffic light cycle with fixed times has been simulated and compared with cycles with varying service times depending on a load of pedestrians and vehicles. In the article, the Op and Sat indicators are proposed to measure the optimisation of the control algorithm on the crossing state. Using these indicators, it has been shown that it is possible to optimise the waiting time by 50%, almost independently of the traffic load in the best case., [ES] La gestión de la movilidad de personas y vehículos es un aspecto de continuo estudio debido a la relevancia que tiene en la contribución a la polución. El control de los semáforos determina las colas que en los cruces se pueden formar. Habitualmente este control no está adaptado al tráfico existente en un momento concreto, dado que la adaptación implica conocer los peatones y vehículos que se encuentran circulando en cada momento. Para resolver este problema, en el artículo se propone el uso de unos dispositivos inteligentes modulares que permiten detectar los vehículos y cambiar los tiempos de acceso al cruce dependiendo de las circunstancias. Para validar el sistema se ha realizado una simulación generando cargas en MatLab y simulando el control con Simulink. Se ha simulado un ciclo de semáforo con tiempos fijos y se ha comparado con ciclos de tiempos variables en función de la carga de peatones y de vehículos. En el artículo se proponen los indicadores Op y Sat como método de medición de la optimización del algoritmo de control sobre el estado del cruce. 27. Assessing the Impact of Continuous Evaluation Strategies: Tradeoff between Student Performance and Instructor Effort

Abstract

Current opinion on undergraduate studies has led to a reformulation of teaching methodologies to base them not just on learning, but also on skills and competencies. In this approach, the teaching/learning process should accomplish both knowledge assimilation and skill development. Previous works demonstrated that a strategy that uses continuous evaluation is able to meet both objectives. However, those studies did not evaluate and quantify the additional effort required to implement such strategies. This paper evaluates the additional instructor effort required when implementing continuous evaluation in a first-year Computer Fundamentals course in the Computer Engineering degree program at the Technical University of Valencia, Spain. The experiment quantifies how instructor workload increases under different continuous evaluation strategies and how this affects the overall student grade. Both the "standard" continuous evaluation method and the intensive continuous evaluation method are analyzed, the latter being a proposal that builds upon the standard method by increasing the number of tests and examinations. The results obtained reveal that continuous evaluation improves student grades but that intensive continuous evaluation is liable to generate an excessive instructor overload without having a significant impact on student scores.

Abstract

In the current context of the Internet of Things, embedded devices can have some intelligence and distribute both data and processed information. This article presents the paradigm shift from a hierarchical pyramid to an inverted pyramid that is the basis for edge, fog, and cloud-based architectures. To support the new paradigm, the article presents a distributed modular architecture. The devices are made up of essential elements, called control nodes, which can communicate to enhance their functionality without sending raw data to the cloud. To validate the architecture, identical control nodes equipped with a distance sensor have been implemented. Each module can read the distance to each vehicle and process these data to provide the vehicle’s speed and length. In addition, the article describes how connecting two or more CNs, forming an intelligent device, can increase the accuracy of the parameters measured. Results show that it is possible to reduce the processing load up to 22% in the case of sharing processed information instead of raw data. In addition, when the control nodes collaborate at the edge level, the relative error obtained when measuring the speed and length of a vehicle is reduced by one percentage point.

[Resumen] En los entornos de movilidad, calles o carreteras, los cruces y las rotondas pueden generar problemas de atascos. Poder optimizar el tráfico entrante y saliente de un cruce o rotonda es uno de los campos de investigación de los sistemas de control inteligente. Para optimizar el tráfico se debe disponer de dispositivos capaces de detectar los vehículos así como de actuar, regulando el tráfico, de forma dinámica para adaptarse a las distintas circunstancias. El sistema presentado busca la adaptación a las necesidades de tráfico en una rotonda. Dependiendo de la saturación de cada carril de entrada se intenta crear un tráfico fluido y continuo en el interior de la misma. Para lograr mejorar el tráfico, en este trabajo se presenta una arquitectura modular que permite adaptarse a cualquier cruce o rotonda para, a partir del control específico de un sector, mejorar el rendimiento global. El sistema simulado está compuesto por dispositivos independientes, que, dependiendo de la información adquirida varían el tiempo de paso. Se presenta, asimismo, un experimento de simulaci ón en el que se pone en valor la capacidad de reducir el tráfico adaptando los tiempos de paso en función de la demanda. Los resultados muestran que es posible descongestionar una rotonda cuando se automatizan dinámicamente los tiempos de paso sobre los que se tiene control. To manage these elements, it is necessary to have devices able to detect the level of traffic as well as to act dynamically in order to adapt the cross access time in each street. The system seeks to adapt to the traffic needs in the roundabout, depending on the saturation of each entrance lane, trying to create a fluid and continuous traffic inside it. In order to optimize the traffic, in this work, a simulation experiment is presented in which the ability to reduce traffic is valued by adapting the access times to a roundabout according to the traffic demand. The simulated system is composed of independent devices, which, depending on the information acquired, can change the access time to the roundabout. Abstract

[EN] Intelligent control of public lighting is nowadays one of the most challenging issues in smart city deployment. Lighting optimization entails a compromise between comfort, safety, and power consumption, affecting both vehicles and pedestrians. Smart solutions must estimate their characteristics to trade-off users' needs and energy requirements. This paper proposes an intelligent street lighting control system and the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve method to evaluate the best number of street lamps to achieve a balance between public road user comfort and system power consumption. The control system is based on the detection of users, mainly pedestrians, using presence sensors. From the detection of a pedestrian by two or more consecutive street lamps it is possible to determine their speed. Knowing the pedestrian speed, allows the system to anticipate and adjust the light intensity of the remaining street lamps, and provide a comfortable view of the street. Using the ROC curve, we evaluate the control algorithm in terms of the number of previous street lamps used. We have tested the system and the method in a model of pedestrians walking down a street. The obtained results show that ROC analysis used to control street lighting allows measuring the whole control system's efficiency by providing a concrete number of previous street lamps.

Abstract

Intelligent control of public lighting is nowadays one of the most challenging issues in smart city deployment. Lighting optimization entails a compromise between comfort, safety, and power consumption, affecting both vehicles and pedestrians. Smart solutions must estimate their characteristics to trade-off users’ needs and energy requirements. This paper proposes an intelligent street lighting control system and the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve method to evaluate the best number of street lamps to achieve a balance between public road user comfort and system power consumption. The control system is based on the detection of users, mainly pedestrians, using presence sensors. From the detection of a pedestrian by two or more consecutive street lamps it is possible to determine their speed. Knowing the pedestrian speed, allows the system to anticipate and adjust the light intensity of the remaining street lamps, and provide a comfortable view of the street. Using the ROC curve, we evaluate the control algorithm in terms of the number of previous street lamps used. We have tested the system and the method in a model of pedestrians walking down a street. The obtained results show that ROC analysis used to control street lighting allows measuring the whole control system’s efficiency by providing a concrete number of previous street lamps.

Abstract

Currently, the proliferation of interconnected smart devices is related to smart urban management. These devices can process sensor data in order to obtain significant information. This information can be provided to the upper layers but also can be used by the devices to take some smart actions. This article shows the change from the classic hierarchical devices and data paradigm to a paradigm based on distributed intelligent devices. The distributed model has been used to create a system architecture with Arduino-based Control Nodes interconnected by means of an I2C-bus. Each module can read the distance to each vehicle, and process this data to provide the vehicle speed and length. A case has experimented where modules share raw data and another case where modules share processed data. Results show that it is possible to reduce processing load up to 22% in the case of sharing processed information instead of raw data.
