Abstract

The Pyrenean Platform for Observation of the Atmosphere (P2OA) is a coupled plain-mountain instrumented platform in southwest France. It is composed of two physical sites: The 'Pic du Midi' mountain top observatory (2877 m a.s.l.) and the 'Centre de Recherches Atmosphériques' (600 m a.s.l). Both sites are complementarily instrumented for the monitoring of climate variables and the study of meteorological processes in a mountainous region. The scientific topics covered by the P2OA include surface-atmosphere interactions in heterogeneous landscape and complex terrain, physics and chemistry of atmospheric trace species at large scale, influence of local and regional-scale emissions and transport on the atmospheric composition, and transient luminous events above thunderstorms. With a large number of instruments and a high hosting capacity, the P2OA contributes to atmospheric sciences in (i) building long-term series of atmospheric observations, (ii) hosting experimental field campaigns and instrumental tests, (iii) educational training in atmospheric observation techniques. Here we present the complete instrumentation of the P2OA and the associated datasets, give a meteorological characterization of the platform, and illustrate the potential of the P2OA and its dataset with past or ongoing studies and projects. 8. High-resolution humidity profiles retrieved from wind profiler radar measurements

Abstract

The retrieval of humidity profiles from wind profiler radars has already been documented in the past 30 years and is known to be neither as straightforward and nor as robust as the retrieval of the wind velocity. The main constraint to retrieve the humidity profile is the necessity to combine measurements from the wind profiler and additional measurements (such as observations from radiosoundings at a coarser time resolution). Furthermore, the method relies on some assumptions and simplifications that restrict the scope of its application. The first objective of this paper is to identify the obstacles and limitations and solve them, or at least define the field of applicability. To improve the method, we propose using the radar capacity to detect transition levels, such as the top level of the boundary layer, marked by a maximum in the radar reflectivity. This forces the humidity profile from the free troposphere and from the boundary layer to coincide at this level, after an optimization of the calibration coefficients, and reduces the error. The resulting mean bias affecting the specific humidity profile never exceeds 0.25 g kg−1. The second objective is to explore the capability of the algorithm to retrieve the humidity vertical profiles for an operational purpose by comparing the results with observations from a Raman lidar.

International audience; Water vapour measurements from a ground-based Raman lidar and an airborne differentialabsorption lidar, complemented by high resolution numerical simulations from twomesoscale models (AROME-WMED and Meso-NH), have been considered to investigatethree transition events from Mistral/Tramontane to southerly marine flow taking place inthe Gulf of Lion area in the time frame September-October 2012, during the HydrologicalCycle in the Mediterranean Experiment Special Observation Period 1. Low-level windreversals associated with these transitions are found to have a strong impact on watervapour transport, leading to a large variability of the water vapour vertical and horizontaldistributions. The high spatial and temporal resolutions of the lidar data allow monitoringthe time evolution of the three-dimensional water vapour field during these transitions frompredominantly northerly Mistral/Tramontane flow to a predominantly southerly flow,permitting to identify the quite sharp separation between these flows, which is also wellcaptured by the mesoscale models. Water vapour measurements from the ground-basedlidar are complemented by particle backscatter measurements from the same system, whichallow also revealing the significant variability in the aerosol and cloud fields associated withthese transition events. Results will be illustrated and discussed at the Conference.

Abstract

To study key processes of the water cycle, two special observation periods (SOPs) of the Hydrological cycle in the Mediterranean experiment (HyMeX) took place during the autumn 2012 and winter 2013. The first SOP aimed to study high precipitation systems and flash-flooding in the Mediterranean area. The AROME-WMED (West-Mediterranean) model (Fourrié et al., 2015) is a dedicated version of the mesoscale Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) AROME-France model 5 which covers the western Mediterranean basin providing the HyMeX operational centre with daily real-time analyses and forecasts. These products allowed adequate decision-making for the field campaign observation deployment and the instrument operation. Shortly after the end of the campaign, a first re-analysis with more observations was performed with the first SOP operational software. An ensuing comprehensive second re-analysis of the first SOP which included field research observations (not assimilated in real-time), and some reprocessed observation datasets, was made with AROME-WMED. Moreover, a more recent version of the AROME model was used with updated background error statistics for the assimilation process. This paper depicts the main differences between the real-time version and the benefits brought by HyMeX re-analyses with AROME-WMED. The first re-analysis used 9% of additional data and the second one 24% more compared to the real-time version. The second re-analysis is found to be closer to observations than the previous AROME-WMED analyses. The second re-analysis forecast errors of surface parameters are reduced up to the 18-h or 24-h forecast range. In the mid and in the upper troposphere, upper-level fields are also improved up to the 48-h forecast range when compared to radiosondes. Integrated Water Vapour comparisons indicate a positive benefit for at least 24 hours. Precipitation forecasts are found to be improved with the second re-analysis for a thresholds up to 10 mm/24-h. For higher thresholds, the frequency bias is degraded. Finally, improvement brought by the second re-analysis is illustrated with the Intensive Observation Period (IOP 8) associated with heavy precipitation over Eastern Spain and South of France. Abstract

International audience; Wind profiler measurements in Niger and Benin during the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis project are used to study the intraseasonal variability of the low and mid troposphere at several time-scales. We focus on the African Easterly Jet (AEJ) and its interaction with the Saharan Heat-Low (HL) and the planetary boundary layer (PBL). We find a pronounced diurnal cycle of the AEJ, characterised by a decrease of wind speed during the afternoon, reaching a minimum at 1800 UTC of about 15-20% of the daily average during the pre-onset period. This decrease is out of phase with the HL intensity, but in phase with the daytime turbulent mixing associated with the PBL. The interaction between the PBL and mid-troposphere is likely responsible for this daily decrease of the AEJ. During the transition periods (dry to wet or wet to dry), the HL seems to govern the AEJ; however, slightly before the monsoon onset, it has no direct influence on the jet. During that time, we find smaller AEJ wind speed for deeper PBL, as found at the diurnal time-scale. This is consistent with the still large surface heating at that time, which favours deep PBL growth, with a top inversion often higher than the shear layer between the monsoon and the easterlies. After the monsoon onset, deep convection, African Easterly Waves (AEWs) and dry intrusions make the synoptic environment complex and blur the interaction between AEJ and PBL. We still find weaker AEJ for deeper PBL, but likely without a direct connection between them.

Abstract

International audience; During the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (AMMA) field campaign, the ATR research aircraft made observations of fluxes and thermodynamics during three 15-day periods, which allowed the seasonal evolution of the atmospheric boundary-layer (ABL) characteristics to be monitored before and after the monsoon onset. As expected, temperature and humidity showed a contrast between dry warm conditions and moister cooler conditions from one period to the other. Most of the time, the wind blew from the west (northwesterly to southwesterly) in the ABL and from the east in the free troposphere. Following rainfall events occuring in July and August, surface sensible heat flux decreased and evaporation increased while the momentum flux remained large in the entire boundary layer, whatever the period. The aim of this paper is to characterize turbulence in terms of fluxes and length-scales for ABLs that exhibit particular characteristics relative to (i) entrainment at the top, (ii) wind rotation at the interface between the monsoon and the Saharan air layer and (iii) seasonal variability. In spite of the poorer accuracy of the turbulent flux estimations at the top of the ABL, the flux profiles were observed to increase or decrease linearly with altitude which enabled accurate estimates of entrainment flux ratios. It was found that the moisture flux distribution in the ABL was governed by top-down processes during the driest period and a mixture of top-down and bottom-up processes during the monsoon period. Significant differences in turbulence length-scales were also highlighted.

International audience; During the AMMA experiment, the French ATR aircraft flew in the lower troposphere in south Niger, with instruments that allow fast measurement of wind, temperature and humidity. Stacked legs flown between early June and mid-August into the moist southwesterly monsoon flow and the dry northeasterly flow of the Saharan Air Layer (SAL) above, enable us to study the interaction between the two flows at the turbulence scale and the role of the planetary boundary layer (PBL) in the transfers between them. We describe the fluctuations observed at the top of the PBL and their evolution during the season. Dry tongues approximately 600 m wide and a few kilometres apart, intruding from the overlying SAL down into the PBL, are characteristic of the Sahelian region at that time of year. They are fully part of the entrainment process at the PBL top and responsible for large moisture fluxes in the upper PBL. They also skew the water vapour distribution which in turn impacts the water vapour scales. We evaluate the impact of the entrainment by use of a conditional analysis on combined fluctuations. The dry tongues play the largest role down to two thirds of the PBL depth. We find larger entrainment during early monsoon than during its active phase, and a large variability of the ratio of entrainment buoyancy flux over surface flux.

Abstract

International audience; Barometric tides around the Pyrenees mountain range are analyzed by means of synoptic surface-station data recorded during one year, surface data from the Pyrenees Experiment (PYREX) and the CRA/LA Very High Frequency (VHF) wind profiler installed in the north of the range. Tides are decomposed into their diurnal and semi-diurnal components. Diurnal tides show a strong non-migrating component and are very dependent on local conditions. Semi-diurnal tides are more homogeneous and present a north-south asymmetry, also noted in the Alps. This cross-range asymmetry could be related to some interference effect caused by the mountain range in the migrating semi-diurnal tide wave. The asymmetry of the diurnal component presents a very strong seasonal variation, probably related to local diabatic effects. A three-month long simulation has been carried out with the National Center for Atmospheric Research's Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) limited-area model to try to reproduce the tide structure. The validation of the results with wind-profiler data shows reasonable agreement with the observed diurnal tide and poorer results for the semi-diurnal component. At surface level, however, the model reproduces some of the features of the observed semi-diurnal tide, and especially the cross-range asymmetry.

Abstract

Vertical profiles of the atmospheric water vapor mixing ratio are retrieved with an algorithm based on the combination of measurements from an Ultra High Frequency-band wind profiler and radiosoundings at a coarser time resolution. The major advance with respect to previous works is the use of the radar capacity to detect transition levels, such as the top level of the boundary layer, marked by a maximum in the radar reflectivity. This forces the water vapor mixing ratio profile from the free troposphere and from the boundary layer to coincide at this level, after an optimization of the calibration coefficients. The capability of the algorithm to retrieve the humidity vertical profiles for an operational purpose is explored and the results are compared with observations from a Raman lidar. Abstract

At the top of the planetary boundary layer, the entrainment of air, which incorporates dry and warm air from the free troposphere into the boundary layer, is a key process for exchanges with the free troposphere since it controls the growth of the boundary layer. Here, we focus on the semi-arid boundary layer where the entrainment process is analyzed using aircraft observations collected during the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis experiment and large-eddy simulations. The role of the entrainment is specifically enhanced in this region where very large gradients at the planetary boundary-layer top can be found due to the presence of the moist, cold monsoon flow on which the dry, warm Harmattan flow is superimposed. A first large-eddy simulation is designed based on aircraft observations of 5 June 2006 during the transition period between dry conditions and the activemonsoon phase. The simulation reproduces the boundary-layer development and dynamics observed on this day. From this specific case, sensitivity tests are carried out to cover a range of conditions observed during seven other flightsmade in the same transition period in order to describe the entrainment processes in detail. The combination of large-eddy simulations and observations allows us to test the parametrization of entrainment in a mixed-layer model with zero-order and first-order approximations for the entrainment zone. The latter representation of the entrainment zone gives a better fit with the conditions encountered in the Sahelian boundary layer during the transition period because large entrainment thicknesses are observed. The sensitivity study also provides an opportunity to highlight the contribution of shear stress and scalar jumps at the top of the boundary layer in the entrainment process, and to test a relevant parametrization published in the recent literature for a mixed-layer model., Peer Reviewed, Preprint
