6. Relationship between cosmic ray intensity and Earth's magnetic field: Cross-wavelet analysis during intense and moderate geomagnetic storms.

Abstract

This study investigated the relationship between the cosmic ray intensity (CRI) and the horizontal component of Earth's magnetic field (dH) during two intense geomagnetic storms that occurred on September 8, 2017, and August 26, 2018, and a moderate storm on February 18, 2020 over three stations: IRKT, YKTK, and HRMS. The findings of this study indicate that the CRI and dH do not exhibit a simple association over each station. A significant decrease in CRI and dH was seen during the intense geomagnetic storm on September 8, 2017, over all stations as compared to the other two storm events. The decrease was more pronounced over the YKTK station, which has low cutoff rigidity (1.65 GV), than the HRMS (4.58 GV) and IRKT (3.64 GV) stations with high cutoff rigidity. Furthermore, the cross-wavelet analysis reveals that the relationship between CRI and dH varies with the strength of the storm, the location, and the cutoff rigidity of the station. Abstract

As the study of ionospheric behavior during various solar activities is an important task, various studies of ionospheric changes during eclipse events have been widely performed in the different regions of the globe. This paper investigates the ionospheric responses to the solar eclipse on 22 July 2009 over Nepal using the total electron content (TEC) measured by dual-frequency Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers. The time-averaged Vertical TEC (vTEC) of ten GPS stations from Nepal is analyzed and it is found that the value of ionospheric TEC decreases due to the reduction of ionizing radiation. In addition, the deviation in the TEC value on eclipse day from the mean vTEC value of the top five quietest days is found to lie in the range ~1–5 TECu at those regions which were associated with the partial eclipse shadow. On the other hand, the region with the total eclipse (BRN2 and RMTE) faced ~6–7 TECu on average reduction in the TEC value. Considering that the eclipse of 22 July 2009 occurred just at sunrise in the Nepalese zone, a maximum reduction of about 5 TECu is very significant. Higher deviation in TEC is therefore linked with the path of totality and the obscuration rate. This study reveals that the ionospheric TEC over Nepal was altered by wave-like energy and momentum transport, as well as obscuration of the solar disc due to the partial and total solar eclipse. Furthermore, the cross-correlation results presented similar type signatures of the eclipse-induced ionospheric modification over Nepal. This research work serves a crucial future reference for the comparative study of change of ionospheric TEC variability over the Nepal region during Eclipse events

Abstract

Pulmonary lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is metastatic sarcoma but mechanisms regulating LAM metastasis are unknown. Extracellular vesicle (EV) regulate cancer metastasis but their roles in LAM have not yet been investigated. Here, we report that EV biogenesis is increased in LAM and LAM EV cargo is enriched with lung tropic integrins, metalloproteinases, and cancer stem cell markers. LAM-EV increase LAM cell migration and invasion via the ITGα6/β1-c-Src-FAK-AKT axis. Metastable (hybrid) phenotypes of LAM metastasizing cells, pivotal for metastasis, are regulated by EV from primary tumor or metastasizing LAM cells via shuttling ATP synthesis to cell pseudopodia or activation of integrin adhesion complex, respectively. In mouse models of LAM, LAM-EV increase lung metastatic burden through mechanisms involving lung extracellular matrix remodeling. Collectively, these data provide evidence for the role of EV in promoting LAM lung metastasis and identify novel EV-dependent mechanisms regulating metastable phenotypes of tumor cells. Clinical impact of research is that it establishes LAM pathway as novel target for LAM therapy.
