Abstract

To highlight the importance of swept-source anterior segment optical coherence tomography (SS-ASOCT) in the peri-surgical management of cataract in uveitis. To describe a case of fibrinoid syndrome in uveitis treated with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rtPA). SS-ASOCT was performed at each follow-up before and after cataract surgery to assess anterior chamber inflammation and assist the clinical management of the patient. A patient with idiopathic autoimmune uveitis was scheduled for cataract surgery. SS-ASOCT allowed to correctly plan the surgery timing. The patient developed a severe fibrinoid syndrome. Postsurgical SS-ASOCT allowed to distinguish between anterior chamber cells and fibrin thus guiding the timing for rtPA intracameral injection. Visual acuity improved from 20/400 the day after the surgery to 20/40. SS-ASOCT allowed a precise assessment of the inflammatory components (cellular vs fibrinoid) after cataract surgery. Intracameral rtPA was safe and effective in the treatment fibrinoid syndrome in uveitis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We prove that for certain partially hyperbolic skew-products, non-uniform hyperbolicity along the leaves implies existence of a finite number of ergodic absolutely continuous invariant probability measures which describe the asymptotics of almost every point. The main technical tool is an extension for sequences of maps of a result of de Melo and van Strien relating hyperbolicity to recurrence properties of orbits. As a consequence of our main result, we also obtain a partial extension of Keller's theorem guaranteeing the existence of absolutely continuous invariant measures for non-uniformly hyperbolic one dimensional maps., Comment: 24 pages

Abstract

We prove existence of (at most denumerable many) absolutely continuous invariant probability measures for random one-dimensional dynamical systems with asymptotic expansion. If the rate of expansion (Lyapunov exponents) is bounded away from zero, we obtain finitely many ergodic absolutely continuous invariant probability measures, describing the asymptotics of almost every point. We also prove a similar result for higher-dimensional random non-uniformly expanding dynamical systems. The results are consequences of the construction of such measures for skew-products with essentially arbitrary base dynamics and asymptotic expansion along the fibers. In both cases our method deals with either critical or singular points for the random maps., Comment: 30 pages; 2 figures. 40. Solid-State Synthesis and Phase Transitions in the RE2(MoO4)3 Family Monitored by Thermodiffraction

Abstract

Solid-state synthesis and phase transitions of RE2(MoO4)3 (RE ≡ Nd, Sm, Eu, and Gd) samples have been monitored by X-ray thermodiffraction with synchrotron radiation. The experiment was divided in two stages. In the first heating, different non-stoichiometric molybdates (Eu4Mo7O27, Eu2Mo4O15, and Pr2Mo4O15 structure types) emerged from the RE2O3 and MoO3 oxides before the expected phases (with α-Eu2(WO4)3 and La2(MoO4)3 structure types and the β-Gd2(MoO4)3 phase). The formation and coexistence of intermediate phases have been explained by common structural motifs with unit cell volumes per atom among those with the formula RE2(MoO4)3. Subsequent heating–cooling cycles showed the occurrence of the reversible and reconstructive α [La2(MoO4)3] ↔ β phase transition, including the less common transition β → α [La2(MoO4)3] obtained by heating the β′-Gd2(MoO4)3 phase from room temperature and clarifying much of the controversy in the literature. The transition mechanisms were studied by proposing a common supercell and comparing the RE and vacancy ordering within similar layers of MoO42– tetrahedra. The possible formation of stacking faults in Nd2(MoO4)3 was explained as a mixture of modulated scheelite phases. This research supports the importance of a directed and rational synthesis analyzing the intermediate products and their phase transitions for the enrichment of materials with new or improved properties. Abstract

Autonomous microgrids are a suitable solution for off-grid electrification in terms of costs and reliability. The correct sizing of its generation and storage systems ensures efficient utilization of the available energy resources. Generally, many sizing approaches assume optimized energy management strategies that rely on central control architectures. However, these architectures are not always available, especially in limited investment microgrid projects. For this reason, the study of operation scenarios based on decentralized control strategy such as droop control is relevant. Based on this, this paper aims to evaluate the impact of the droop control over the sizing results of a solar/wind/battery/diesel microgrid. For this purpose, a case study of a sizing problem is presented, including the formulation and modelling. Results are presented comparing an hourly optimized energy management scenario with multiple values of the droop control parameters. Simulations results indicate that a competitive total cost can be obtained if the droop parameters are calculated considering the microgrid sizing results. Abstract

The Brewer ozone spectrophotometer (the Brewer) is one of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW)'s standard ozone-monitoring instruments since the 1980s. The entire global Brewer ozone-monitoring network is operated and maintained via a hierarchical calibration chain, which started from world reference instruments that are independently calibrated via the primary calibration method (PCM) at a premium site (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Mauna Loa Observatory, Hawaii). These world reference instruments have been maintained by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) in Toronto for the last 4 decades. Their calibration is transferred to the travelling standard instrument and then to network (field) Brewer instruments at their monitoring sites (all via the calibration transfer method; CTM). Thus, the measurement accuracy for the entire global network is dependent on the calibration of world reference instruments. In 2003, to coordinate regional calibration needs, the Regional Brewer Calibration Center for Europe (RBCC-E) was formed in Izaña, Spain. From that point, RBCC-E began calibrating regional references also via PCM instead of CTM. The equivalency and consistency of world and regional references are then assured during international calibration campaigns. In practice, these two calibration methods have different physical requirements, e.g., the PCM requires a stable ozone field in the short term (i.e., half-day), while the CTM would benefit from larger changes in slant ozone conditions for the calibration periods. This difference dictates that the PCM can only be implemented on Brewer instruments at certain sites and even in certain months of the year. This work is the first effort to use long-term observation records from 11 Brewer instruments at four sites to reveal the challenges in performing the PCM. By utilizing a new calibration simulation model and reanalysis ozone data, this work also quantifies uncertainties in the PCM due to short-term ozone variability. The results are validated by real-world observations and used to provide scientific advice on where and when the PCM can be performed and how many days of observations are needed to achieve the calibration goal (i.e., ensure the calibration uncertainty is within a determined criterion, i.e., ≤5 R6 units; R6 is a measurement-derived double ratio in the actual Brewer processing algorithm). This work also suggests that even if the PCM cannot be used to deliver final calibration results for mid- or high-latitude sites, the statistics of the long-term PCM fitting results can still provide key information for field Brewer instruments as stability indicators (which would provide performance monitoring and data quality assurance).
