The primary aim of this study is to examine the characteristics of atmospheric circulation patterns at various geopotential levels and their relationship with precipitation in southern Romania during the period from 1961 to 2020. Daily geopotential heights (1000 hPa, 850 hPa, 700 hPa and 500 hPa) were utilized in an automatic updated atmospheric circulation scheme for the creation of daily calendars of 12 circulation types (5 anticyclonic and 7 cyclonic) as well as daily time series derived from five stations over the domain of interest. To assess the influence of the atmospheric circulation on precipitation, correlations and time trends were explored between the rainfall totals and the different circulation types. The findings reveal a rising trend in anticyclonic circulation types across the region, while cyclonic types exhibit a consisted decrease. Precipitation and number of rain days percentages associated with specific cyclonic types depend on the geopotential levels, while annual and seasonal precipitation linked to cyclonic types decreases progressively from higher to lower levels. The strongest correlations in circulation type frequencies are observed between adjacent circulation types. Taylor diagram analysis indicates that the relationships between circulation types and precipitation vary both seasonally and across different atmospheric levels. Notably, the two rainiest circulation types are more accurately simulated at higher atmospheric levels (700 hPa and 500 hPa). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The main goal of the present study is to identify the prevailing atmospheric circulation patterns (circulation types) that are associated with the occurrence of precipitation (both mean and extreme) over southern Romania. A daily circulation type calendar derived from an automatic and objective classification scheme is used in synergy with the daily precipitation time series from five weather stations in the study area for a sixty-year period (1961–2020). Both mean and extreme precipitation do not show statistically significant trends, except for the annual precipitation at Constanța, for the value with daily precipitation totals greater than the 95th percentile at Craiova and the number of days exceeding the 99th percentile at Buzău and Râmnicu -Vâlcea, where significant negative trends were noticed. Moreover, the precipitation trends were analyzed in relation to the atmospheric circulation types. Non-significant positive trends were observed for the precipitation amounts (annually, winter, spring, and autumn) corresponding to very rainy circulation types (C, Cwsw), while for summer, the equivalent trends were negative. Moreover, it became evident that during extreme precipitation events, the predominant circulation types (C, Cwsw) are associated with western or almost western atmospheric circulation and Mediterranean- or Atlantic-originated depressions. The aim of the study is to compare the performance of the two classification methods based on the atmospheric circulation types over the Pannonian basin in Central Europe. Relationships including seasonal occurrences and correlation coefficients, as well as comparative diagrams of the seasonal occurrences of the circulation types of the two classification systems are presented. When comparing the automated (objective) and empirical (subjective) classification methods, it was found that the frequency of the empirical anticyclonic (or cyclonic) types is much higher (or lower) than that of the automated anticyclonic (cyclonic) types both on an annual and seasonal basis. The highest and statistically significant correlations between the circulation types of the two classification systems, as well as those between the cumulated seasonal anticyclonic and cyclonic types, occur in winter for both classifications, since the weather-influencing effect of the atmospheric circulation in this season is the most prevalent. Precipitation levels in Budapest display a decreasing trend in accordance with the decrease in the occurrence of the automated cyclonic types. In contrast, the occurrence of the empirical cyclonic types displays an increasing trend.
