Search

Sparse and serendipitous asteroid photometry obtained by wide field surveys such as the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) is a valuable resource for studying the properties of large numbers of small Solar System bodies. We have gathered a large data base of ATLAS photometry in wideband optical cyan and orange filters, consisting of 9.6 × 107 observations of 4.5 × 105 main belt asteroids and Jupiter Trojans. We conduct a phase curve analysis of these asteroids considering each apparition separately, allowing us to accurately reject outlying observations and to remove apparitions and asteroids not suitable for phase curve determination. We obtain a data set of absolute magnitudes and phase parameters for over 100 000 selected asteroids observed by ATLAS, |$\sim 66\, 000$| of which had sufficient measurements to derive colours in the ATLAS filters. To demonstrate the power of our data set we consider the properties of the Nysa–Polana complex, for which the ATLAS colours and phase parameters trace the S-like and C-like compositions amongst family members. We also compare the properties of the leading and trailing groups of Jupiter Trojans, finding no significant differences in their phase parameters or colours as measured by ATLAS, supporting the consensus that these groups were captured from a common source population during planetary migration. Furthermore, we identify ∼9000 asteroids that exhibit large shifts in derived absolute magnitude between apparitions, indicating that these objects have both elongated shapes and spin axes with obliquity ∼90 degrees. Given the anisotropic emission from quasar accretion discs, their viewing angle affects estimates of the quasar luminosity, black hole mass, and Eddington ratio. Discs appear overluminous when viewed pole-on and underluminous when viewed at high inclination. In radio-quiet quasars, the viewing angle is usually unknown, although spectroscopic indicators have been proposed. Here, we use a recently discovered universality in the variability structure function (SF) of quasar light curves (LCs), where all quasars show the same SF when clocks run in units of orbital time-scale. As an offset from the mean relation can be caused by incorrect orbital time-scales and thus incorrect luminosities, we correlate these offsets with suggested inclination indicators. We derive SFs from NASA/Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) LCs spanning ∼6 yr of observation, using a sample of 183 luminous quasars with measured H β lines as well as 753 quasars with C  iv and Mg  ii lines. Starting from the proposed orientation indicators, we expect quasars with narrower H β lines and with more blueshifted C  iv lines to be viewed more pole-on and thus appear overluminous. In contrast, our SF analysis finds that presumed pole-on discs appear underluminous, consistently for both line indicators. We discuss possible explanations for the behaviour of quasars with highly blueshifted C  iv lines irrespective of inclination angle, including dusty outflows that might render the accretion disc underluminous and flatter disc temperature profiles with longer orbital time-scales than in thin-disc models but reach no satisfying conclusion. While the sample of optical Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) light curves (LCs) usable for cosmological parameter measurements surpasses 2000, the sample of published, cosmologically viable near-infrared (NIR) SN Ia LCs, which have been shown to be good 'standard candles,' is still ≲ 200. Here, we present high-quality NIR LCs for 83 SNe Ia ranging from 0.002 < z < 0.09 as a part of the Dark Energy, H0, and peculiar Velocities using Infrared Light from Supernovae (DEHVILS) survey. Observations are taken using UKIRT's WFCAM, where the median depth of the images is 20.7, 20.1, and 19.3 mag (Vega) for Y, J , and H -bands, respectively. The median number of epochs per SN Ia is 18 for all three bands (Y,J , and H) combined and 6 for each band individually. We fit 47 SN Ia LCs that pass strict quality cuts using three LC models, SALT3, snoopy , and B  aye SN and find scatter on the Hubble diagram to be comparable to or better than scatter from optical-only fits in the literature. Fitting NIR-only LCs, we obtain standard deviations ranging from 0.128 to 0.135 mag. Additionally, we present a refined calibration method for transforming 2MASS magnitudes to WFCAM magnitudes using HST CALSPEC stars that results in a 0.03 mag shift in the WFCAM Y -band magnitudes. We present the discovery that ATLAS18mlw was a tidal disruption event (TDE) in the galaxy WISEA J073544.83+663717.3, at a luminosity distance of 334 Mpc. Initially discovered by the Asteroid Terrestrial Impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) on 2018 March 17.3, the TDE nature of the transient was uncovered only recently with the re-reduction of a SuperNova Integral Field Spectrograph (SNIFS) spectrum. This spectrum, taken by the Spectral Classification of Astronomical Transients (SCAT) survey, shows a strong blue continuum and a broad H α emission line. Here, we present roughly 6 yr of optical survey photometry beginning before the TDE to constrain active galactic nucleus activity, optical spectroscopy of the transient, and a detailed study of the host galaxy properties through analysis of archival photometry and a host spectrum. ATLAS18mlw was detected in ground-based light curves for roughly 2 months. From a blackbody fit to the transient spectrum and bolometric correction of the optical light curve, we conclude that ATLAS18mlw is best explained by a low-luminosity TDE with a peak luminosity of log(L [erg s−1]) = 43.5 ± 0.2. The TDE classification is further supported by the quiescent Balmer strong nature of the host galaxy. We also calculated the TDE decline rate from the bolometric light curve and find Δ L 40 = −0.7 ± 0.2 dex, making ATLAS18mlw a member of the growing class of 'faint and fast' TDEs with low peak luminosities and fast decline rates. We present a novel technique to study Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) by constraining surviving companions of historical extragalactic SN by combining archival photographic plates and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging. We demonstrate this technique for Supernova 1972E, the nearest known SN Ia in 125 yr. Some models of SNe Ia describe a white dwarf with a non-degenerate companion that donates enough mass to trigger thermonuclear detonation. Hydrodynamic simulations and stellar evolution models show that these donor stars will survive the explosion, and show increased luminosity for at least a 1000 yr. Thus, late-time observations of the exact location of a supernova can constrain the presence of a surviving donor star and progenitor models. We find the explosion site of SN 1972E by analysing 17 digitized photographic plates taken with the European Southern Observatory 1-m Schmidt and 1 plate taken with the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory 1.5-m telescope. Using the Gaia eDR3 catalogue to determine Supernova 1972E's location yields: α = 13h39m52 |${_{.}^{\rm s}}$| 708 ± 0 |${_{.}^{\rm s}}$| 004 and δ = −31°40'9 |${_{.}^{\prime\prime}}$| 00 ± 0 |${_{.}^{\prime\prime}}$| 04 (ICRS). In 2005, HST /ACS imaged the host galaxy of SN 1972E with the F 435 W, F 555 W , and F 814 W filters covering the explosion site. The nearest detected source is offset by 3.0 times our positional precision, and is inconsistent with the colours expected of a surviving donor star. Thus, the limiting magnitude of the HST observation (F 555 W  > 28 mag) rules out all He star companion models and the most luminous main-sequence companion model currently in the literature. A large sample of white dwarfs is selected by both proper motion and colours from the Pan-STARRS 1 |$3\pi$| Steradian Survey Processing Version 2 to construct the white dwarf luminosity functions of the discs and halo in the solar neighbourhood. Four-parameter astrometric solutions were recomputed from the epoch data. The generalized maximum volume method is then used to calculate the density of the populations. After removal of crowded areas near the Galactic plane and centre, the final sky area used by this work is 7.833 sr, which is |$83{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of the |$3\pi$| sky and |$62{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of the whole sky. By dividing the sky using Voronoi tessellation, photometric and astrometric uncertainties are recomputed at each step of the integration to improve the accuracy of the maximum volume. We present a new 3D map of interstellar dust reddening, covering three quarters of the sky (declinations of δ ≳ −30°) out to a distance of several kiloparsecs. The map is based on high-quality stellar photometry of 800 million stars from Pan-STARRS 1 and 2MASS. We divide the sky into sightlines containing a few hundred stars each, and then infer stellar distances and types, along with the line-of-sight dust distribution. Our new map incorporates a more accurate average extinction law and an additional 1.5 yr of Pan-STARRS 1 data, tracing dust to greater extinctions and at higher angular resolutions than our previous map. Out of the plane of the Galaxy, our map agrees well with 2D reddening maps derived from far-infrared dust emission. After accounting for a 25 per cent difference in scale, we find a mean scatter of ∼10 per cent between our map and the Planck far-infrared emission-based dust map, out to a depth of 0.8 mag in E(gP1 − rP1), with the level of agreement varying over the sky. Large modern surveys require efficient review of data in order to find transient sources such as supernovae, and to distinguish such sources from artefacts and noise. Much effort has been put into the development of automatic algorithms, but surveys still rely on human review of targets. This paper presents an integrated system for the identification of supernovae in data from Pan-STARRS1, combining classifications from volunteers participating in a citizen science project with those from a convolutional neural network. The unique aspect of this work is the deployment, in combination, of both human and machine classifications for near real-time discovery in an astronomical project. We show that the combination of the two methods outperforms either one used individually. This result has important implications for the future development of transient searches, especially in the era of Large Synoptic Survey Telescope and other large-throughput surveys. We use the WISE-2MASS infrared galaxy catalogue matched with Pan-STARRS1 (PS1) galaxies to search for a supervoid in the direction of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) cold spot (CS). Our imaging catalogue has median redshift z - 0.14, and we obtain photometric redshifts from PS1 optical colours to create a tomographic map of the galaxy distribution. The radial profile centred on the CS shows a large low-density region, extending over tens of degrees. Motivated by previous CMB results, we test for underdensities within two angular radii, 5°, and 15°. The counts in photometric redshift bins show significantly low densities at high detection significance, ≪5σ and ≪6σ, respectively, for the two fiducial radii. The line-of-sight position of the deepest region of the void is z ≃0.15-0.25. Our data, combined with an earlier measurement by Granett, Szapudi & Neyrinck, are consistent with a largeR void = (220 ± 50) h-1 Mpc supervoid with δm ∇ - 0.14 ± 0.04 centred at z = 0.22 ± 0.03. Such a supervoid, constituting at least a ~3.3σ fluctuation in a Gaussian distribution of the Μ cold dark matter model, is a plausible cause for the CS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the fiducial sequences of a sample of Galactic star clusters in the five bands of the Pan-STARRS1 (PS1) photometric system (gP1, rP1, iP1, zP1, and yP1). These empirical sequences – which include the red giant and sub-giant branches, the main sequence, and the horizontal branch – were defined from deep colour–magnitude diagrams reaching below the oldest main-sequence turn-offs of 13 globular and 3 old open clusters covering a wide range of metallicities ( − 2.4 ≲ [Fe/H] ≲ +0.4). We find excellent agreement for the nine clusters in common with previous studies in similar photometric systems when transformed to the PS1 system. Because the photometric and spectroscopic properties of these stellar populations are accurately known, the fiducials provide a solid basis for the interpretation of observations in the PS1 system, as well as valuable constraints to improve the empirical colour–Teff relations. We use a WISE-2MASS-Pan-STARRS1 galaxy catalog to search for a supervoid in the direction of the Cosmic Microwave Background Cold Spot. We present an IDL graphical user-interface-driven software package designed for the analysis of exoplanet transit light curves. The Transit Analysis Package (TAP) software uses Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) techniques to fit light curves using the analytic model ofMandal and Agol (2002). The package incorporates a wavelet-based likelihood function developed by Carter and Winn (2009), which allows the MCMC to assess parameter uncertainties more robustly than classic X2 methods by parameterizing uncorrelated "white" and correlated "red" noise. The software is able to simultaneously analyze multiple transits observed in different conditions (instrument, filter, weather, etc.). The graphical interface allows for the simple execution and interpretation of Bayesian MCMC analysis tailored to a user's specific data set and has been thoroughly tested on ground-based and Kepler photometry. This paper describes the software release and provides applications to new and existing data. Reanalysis of groundbased observations of TrES-1b, WASP-4b, and WASP-10b (Winn et al., 2007, 2009; Johnson et al., 2009; resp.) and space-based Kepler 4b-8b (Kipping and Bakos 2010) show good agreement between TAP and those publications. We present a brief update on the ACS Virgo and Fornax Cluster Surveys — Hubble Space Telescope programs to obtain ACS imaging for 143 early-type galaxies in the two galaxy clusters nearest to the Milky Way. We summarize a selection of science highlights from the surveys as including new results on the central structure of early-type galaxies, the apparent continuity of photometric and structural parameters between dwarf and giant galaxies, and the properties of globular clusters, diffuse star clusters and ultra-compact dwarf galaxies. We examine the photometric and structural properties of early-type galaxies derived from the ACS Virgo and Fornax Cluster Surveys, supplementing these data with previously published or newly reanalysed data for additional early-type galaxies in Virgo, Fornax and the Local Group. As we have noted elsewhere, Sérsic models are found to provide accurate representations of the observed brightness profiles on scales greater than a few percent of the effective radius, Re. On smaller scales, the brightness profiles of bright (MB ≳ −20) galaxies show central deficits with respect to the inward extrapolation of the Sérsic models; fainter galaxies usually show central excesses. Fainter than MB ≈ −20, we find a continuity in the photometric and structural scaling relations: i.e., between absolute magnitude, central surface brightness, Sérsic index, effective radius, and the surface brightness measured at, and averaged within, the effective radius. There is no evidence for a “dwarf/giant dichotomy” — a conclusion consistent with a number of recent studies but contrary to some earlier claims. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

We present a method to infer reddenings and distances to stars based only on their broad-band photometry, and show how this method can be used to produce a three-dimensional (3D) dust map of the Galaxy. Our method samples from the full probability density function of distance, reddening, and stellar type for individual stars, as well as the full uncertainty in reddening as a function of distance in the 3D dust map. We incorporate prior knowledge of the distribution of stars in the Galaxy and the detection limits of the survey. For stars in the Pan-STARRS 1 (PS1) 3π survey, we demonstrate that our reddening estimates are unbiased and accurate to ~0.13 mag in E(B – V) for the typical star. Based on comparisons with mock catalogs, we expect distances for main-sequence stars to be constrained to within ~20%-60%, although this range can vary, depending on the reddening of the star, the precise stellar type, and its position on the sky. A later paper will present a 3D map of dust over the three quarters of the sky surveyed by PS1. Both the individual stellar inferences and the 3D dust map will enable a wealth of Galactic science in the plane. We report the discovery of two new dwarf galaxies, Lacerta I/Andromeda XXXI (Lac I/And XXXI) and Cassiopeia III/Andromeda XXXII (Cas III/And XXXII), in stacked Pan-STARRS1 r P1- and i P1-band imaging data. Both are luminous systems (MV ~ –12) located at projected distances of 20fdg3 and 10fdg5 from M31. Lac I and Cas III are likely satellites of the Andromeda galaxy with heliocentric distances of $756^{+44}_{-28}{\rm \,kpc}$ and $772^{+61}_{-56}{\rm \,kpc}$, respectively, and corresponding M31-centric distances of 275 ± 7 kpc and $144^{+6}_{-4}{\rm \,kpc}$. The brightest of recent Local Group member discoveries, these two new dwarf galaxies owe their late discovery to their large sizes ($r_h = 4.2^{+0.4}_{-0.5}$ arcmin or $912^{+124}_{-93}{\rm \,pc}$ for Lac I; $r_h = 6.5^{+1.2}_{-1.0}$ arcmin or 1456 ± 267 pc for Cas III) and consequently low surface brightness (μ0 ~ 26.0 mag arcsec–2), as well as to the lack of a systematic survey of regions at large radii from M31, close to the Galactic plane. This latter limitation is now alleviated by the 3π Pan-STARRS1 survey, which could lead to the discovery of other distant Andromeda satellite dwarf galaxies., Astronomy

We present the discovery of a new dwarf galaxy, Perseus I/Andromeda XXXIII, found in the vicinity of Andromeda (M31) in stacked imaging data from the Pan-STARRS1 3π survey. Located 27fdg9 away from M31, Perseus I has a heliocentric distance of 785 ± 65 kpc, compatible with it being a satellite of M31 at $374^{+14}_{-10}{\rm \,kpc}$ from its host. The properties of Perseus I are typical for a reasonably bright dwarf galaxy (MV = –10.3 ± 0.7), with an exponential half-light radius of rh = 1.7 ± 0.4 arcmin or $r_h = 400^{+105}_{-85}{\rm \,pc}$ at this distance, and a moderate ellipticity ($\epsilon = 0.43^{+0.15}_{-0.17}$). The late discovery of Perseus I is due to its fairly low surface brightness ($\mu _0=25.7^{+1.0}_{-0.9}$ mag arcsec–2), and to the previous lack of deep, high quality photometric data in this region. If confirmed to be a companion of M31, the location of Perseus I, far east from its host, could place interesting constraints on the bulk motion of the satellite system of M31., Astronomy

We have used a precision calibrated photodiode as the fundamental metrology reference in order to determine the relative throughput of the PanSTARRS telescope and the Gigapixel imager, from 400 nm to 1050 nm. Our technique uses a tunable laser as a source of illumination on a transmissive flat-field screen. We determine the full-aperture system throughput as a function of wavelength, including (in a single integral measurement) the mirror reflectivity, the transmission functions of the filters and the corrector optics, and the detector quantum efficiency, by comparing the light seen by each pixel in the CCD array to that measured by a precision-calibrated silicon photodiode. This method allows us to determine the relative throughput of the entire system as a function of wavelength, for each pixel in the instrument, without observations of celestial standards.
