11. Information Resilient Society in an AI World—Is XAI Sufficient?

Abstract

This paper discusses the role of organizational records management (ORM) with respect to the field of explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) and argues about its necessity and significance. The current trend is to utilize AI to explain AI, including both explanation production and provision. We argue that this kind of approach is not sufficient by itself as it lacks neutrality and localness to explanation recipients, thus ineffective in establishing public trust. We propose the addition of the ORM profession, as an informational 3rd party, to the current and future XAI. We envision that, by working together with XAI performers, ORM contributes to an information resilient AI society. To take on the related responsibilities, the ORM profession must improve its professional expertise and strengthen its professional independence. We call for consensus among individual information professionals and the advocacy of information professional networks to make this vision a reality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Records function in society with multiple utilities, and this article reports on their role in establishing organizational identity for individuals. As a unique group within society, farmer workers face a number of difficulties, and one of them is about identity: what identity do they possess, what identity should or could they possess and what identity is or will be of assistance to their current lives? Utilizing the identity status typology, this paper assesses the current identity situation of farmer workers and then reports on the efforts of the Chinese records profession in assisting the formation of a positive farmer worker identity. Abstract

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present the findings of one of the 16 research teams of the third phase of the InterPARES (International Research on Permanent Authentic Records in Electronic Systems) project, that is, TEAM Canada. As with all other national teams, TEAM Canada aimed at building solutions for continuing accessibility of digital records in a variety of organizations. Design/methodology/approach – All research teams, including TEAM Canada, utilized action research as their methodological framework. Findings – The most significant finding of TEAM Canada is its discovery of the serious situation with the foundation of continuing accessibility of digital records, that is, the insufficiency of, or even the lack of, digital records management in organizations participating in the project. Originality/value – The study described in the paper is unique for a number of reasons. First, it was guided by a theoretical framework featuring digital diplomatics, which concentrates the development of the InterPARES project of its 12-year investigation. Second, it observed the principle of open inquiry, which encouraged researchers to identify research design and methods according to suitability, not to any particular epistemological perspective.
