Abstract

Voltage regulation is one of the important goals for electrical sources and consumers. In this paper a new transformerless single-phase AC voltage regulator based on buck-boost converter topology is presented. The regulator circuit has a simple structure using only two bidirectional active switches, one inductor and one capacitor. A closed loop control system is implemented for the proposed regulator operation. A control law depending on the instantaneous values of the regulator's real input and desired output voltage is obtained and supports the PI controller. The control law allows the controller to obtain efficient pulse width modulation (PWM) switching duty ratio for the desired output voltage when the input voltage has surges or fluctuations and the output load is changed. An experimental laboratory setup has been implemented for the proposed AC voltage regulator. The obtained results demonstrate that the proposed topology is capable of and efficient for both bucking and boosting the input AC voltage to a high quality output voltage with a low total harmonic distortion (THD) for different input voltage and load conditions.

Abstract

Purpose: To determine the effect of inspiratory muscle training (IMT) on respiratory and peripheral muscle strength, functional exercise capacity, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), fatigue, depression, and cardiac functions in patients with stable angina. Methods: A randomized, controlled, single-blinded study. Twenty patients (59.95 ± 7.35 y, LVEF - 58.77 ± 7.49) with stable angina received IMT at the lowest load (10 cmH2O), and 20 patients (55.85 ± 7.60 y, LVEF - 62.26 ± 7.75) received training at 30% of maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) seven days/8 weeks. Respiratory muscle strength (MIP; maximal expiratory pressure, MEP), peripheral muscle strength, pulmonary functions, functional exercise capacity (6-min walking test; exercise test), fatigue, HRQoL, depression, and cardiac functions were evaluated before and after. Results: A statistical difference was found between groups in terms of respiratory and peripheral muscle strength, pulmonary functions, functional exercise capacity (p<0.05). The results of fatigue, depression, HRQoL, and cardiac functions were similar between the groups (p>0.05). Conclusions: This study is the first to demonstrate the positive effects of IMT in patients with stable angina. IMT is a safe and effective method and is recommended to be added to cardiopulmonary rehabilitation programs and guidelines, as it results in increased peripheral muscle strength and functional exercise capacity in stable angina patients. 10. Design of leather footwear for diabetics containing chlorhexidine digluconate microparticles

Abstract

ChlorHexidine Digluconate [CHD] was encapsulated inside an ethylcellulose shell material [Aquacoat ECD], and then spray dried to produce mixed microparticles (MPs). The validity and functional quality of the resultant [CHD-MPs] were analyzed on vamp and lining leather which are used to manufacture shoes for diabetics. The morphology, efficiency of encapsulation and in vitro release characteristics of the [CHD-MPs] were optimized in order to impregnate [CHD-MPs] onto leather footwear for diabetics. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to characterize the [CHD-MPs] and the leathers treated with it. SEM images illustrated that the [CHD-MPs] were spherical, smooth in shape and adhered well to leather. In vitro CHD-release studies from its MPs, and for leather treated with it were performed in phosphate buffer saline at pH =7.2. There was an inherently controlled release behaviour of CHD for all the formulations on leather. Finally, microbiologic studies on leather treated with [CHD-MPs] were done. This study suggested that footwear containing [CHD-MPs] is/will improve the quality of daily life for diabetics. © 2020 American Leather Chemists Association. All rights reserved.

25. Treatment of hypertension with perindopril reduces plasma atrial natriuretic peptide levels, left ventricular mass, and improves echocardiographic parameters of diastolic function

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is a major independent risk factor for cardiac deaths, and diastolic dysfunction is a usual finding during the course of this disease. HYPOTHESIS: This study was designed to investigate the effects of chronic therapy with perindopril on left ventricular (LV) mass, left atrial size, diastolic function, and plasma level of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) in patients with hypertension. METHODS: Twenty four patients who had not been previously taking any antihypertensive medication and without prior history of angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, dysrhythmias, valvular heart disease, or systemic illnesses received 4-8 mg/day of perindopril orally. Echocardiographic studies were acquired at baseline and 6 months after the initiation of therapy. RESULTS: Systolic and diastolic blood pressure decreased from 174 +/- 19.7 and 107.5 +/- 7.8 mmHg to 134 +/- 10.6 and 82 +/- 6.7 mmHg, respectively (p < 0.001). Left ventricular mass decreased from 252.4 +/- 8.3 to 205.7 +/- 7.08 g and left atrial volume from 20.4 +/- 5.1 to 17.6 +/- 5.2 ml, respectively (p < 0.001). Transmitral Doppler early and atrial filling velocity ratio (E/A) increased from 0.69 +/- 0.06 to 0.92 +/- 0.05 m/s and plasma ANP level decreased from 71.9 +/- 11.7 to 35.3 +/- 7.8 pg/ml (p < 0.001). Reduction of LV mass correlated positively with a reduction in ANP levels (r = 0.66, p < 0.0005). CONCLUSIONS: Perindopril caused a significant reduction of LV mass, left atrial volume, and plasma ANP levels, as well as improvement in Doppler parameters of LV filling in this group of patients with hypertension.

Abstract

The aim of this report is to emphasize that corticosteroids should not be prescribed when the etiological factors remain unidentified. A 34‑year‑old male visited our ophthalmology clinic suffering from blurred vision. Behçet’s disease had been diagnosed 5 years prior, and the patient was taking an oral immunosuppressant and a systemic corticosteroid. Vitreous cell count and foci of chorioretinitis (apparently confined to the ocular fundus) were evident. A vitreous sample was subjected to polymerase chain reaction, which resulted in the identification of and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Treatment with a combination of four anti‑tuberculosis drugs was commenced. During the follow‑up, the vitritis disappeared, and the foci of active chorioretinitis improved. Systemic and Sub‑Tenon corticosteroid treatment should not be prescribed until vitreous and anterior chamber fluid samples have been evaluated in patients with uveitis. 33. Flexible, fast and accurate sequence alignment profiling on GPGPU with PaSWAS

Abstract

Motivation To obtain large-scale sequence alignments in a fast and flexible way is an important step in the analyses of next generation sequencing data. Applications based on the Smith-Waterman (SW) algorithm are often either not fast enough, limited to dedicated tasks or not sufficiently accurate due to statistical issues. Current SW implementations that run on graphics hardware do not report the alignment details necessary for further analysis. Results With the Parallel SW Alignment Software (PaSWAS) it is possible (a) to have easy access to the computational power of NVIDIA-based general purpose graphics processing units (GPGPUs) to perform high-speed sequence alignments, and (b) retrieve relevant information such as score, number of gaps and mismatches. The software reports multiple hits per alignment. The added value of the new SW implementation is demonstrated with two test cases: (1) tag recovery in next generation sequence data and (2) isotype assignment within an immunoglobulin 454 sequence data set. Abstract

Further phytochemical studies on the aerial parts of Phlomis viscosa (Lamiaceae) led to the isolation of 24 compounds: 3 iridoid glycosides, 10 phenylethanoid glycosides, a megastigmane glycoside and a hydroquinone glycoside, as well as 2 lignan glucosides and 7 neolignan glucosides, 1 of which is new (17b). Compound 17b was obtained as a minor component of an inseparable mixture (2:1) of 2 neolignan glucosides (17a/b), and characterized as 3',4-O-dimethylcedrusin 9-O-b -glucopyranoside. Full NMR data of the known 8-O-4' neolignan glucoside, erythro-1-(4-O-b-glucopyranosyl-3-methoxyphenyl)- 2-{2-methoxyl-4-[1-(E)-propene-3-ol]-phenoxyl}-propane-1,3-diol (18) are also reported. All isolated compounds were screened for cell growth inhibition versus 3 tumor cell lines (MCF7, NCI-H460, and SF-268) and several phenylethanoid glycosides were found to possess weak antitumoral activity. The phenylethanoid glycosides were also evaluated for their free radical (DPPH) scavenging, antibacterial and antifungal activities. The free radical (DPPH) scavenging activities of verbascoside (4), isoacteoside (5), forsythoside B (10), myricoside (13) and samioside (14) were found to be comparable to that of dl-a -tocopherol. Compounds 4, 5, 10 and 14 (MIC: 500 m g/mL) as well as Leucosceptoside A (8) and 13 (MIC:1000 m g/mL) showed very weak activity against Gram (+) bacteria.

PubMedID: 12630938 Aim: The aim of the present study was to investigate the usefulness of insulin sensitivity check indices in our hospital population. Methods: Both HOMA (insulin X glucose in mmol/l/22.5) and QUICKI (1/log insulin in µu/ml + log glucose in mg/dl) indices were calculated from fasting values in 1774 subjects from the medical records of Baskent University Adana Hospital. Results: Subjects with diabetes, hyperlipidaemia and central obesity were characterized by significantly higher HOMA and lower QUICKI indices than those of healthy subjects. A fall in the QUICKI index (0.3469 ± 0.028 in healthy subjects and 0.3247 ± 0.025 in non-obese diabetics) as well as an increase in HOMA index (2.24 ± 1.26 in healthy subjects and 3.59 ± 2.08 in non-obese diabetics) corresponded to metabolic and clinical manifestations of insulin resistance in various groups of subjects. Age, low HDL cholesterol, male sex, type 2 DM and hypertension were independent risk factors for CAD. Age, male sex, waist circumference and CAD were found to be risk factors for hypertension. Fasting insulin and glucose levels contain sufficient information to assess insulin sensitivity over a wide range in a diverse population. The following can be accepted as mean values to assess insulin resistance in our hospital population: 0.3469 ± 0.028 for the QUICKI index and 2.24 ± 1.26 for the HOMA index. Conclusions: HOMA and QUICKI indices are simple and reproducible methods for determining insulin sensitivity in humans.

Abstract

This study tries to reveal the levels of three distinct PAHs (naphthalene, benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) and anthracene on honey samples. They were taken from several different stations from the Nigde City (Central Anatolia, Turkey). The Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry results revealed that twenty-four honey samples having naphthalene residues (for GC-MS limit of detection is 1 ppb and the upper limit 100 ppb in the European Union MRLs). In addition six samples have BaP residues (1.51 ± 0.47 ng/g) and eight examples have anthracene residues (1.59 ± 0.85 ng/g). Heavy metals in the honey samples were studied on Pb, Ni, Cr and Cd elements. To get simple and multivariate statistics, the SPSS Statistics 21 software has been used for this work. According to simple statistics, maximum-minimum values for Pb are 4286-1998; Ni 9987-5457; Cr 9654-2335 and Cd 3229-1090. However, we get higher statistics values from Cr and Cd. Abstract

IN THIS PAPER, AN ELASTIC-PLASTIC DEFORMATION of a centrally heated two-layered composite cylinder with free ends subjected to uniformly distributed internal energy generation within an inner cylinder is studied using Tresca's yield condition and its associated flow rule. Stress, strain and displacement distributions in the composite cylinder made of elastic-perfectly plastic material are derived considering the influence of geometric parameters as well as material properties such as yield strength, modulus of elasticity, Poisson's ratio, coefficient of thermal conduction and coefficient of thermal expansion. Yielding starts at the outer boundary or at the axis corresponding to an 'edge regime' of Tresca's prism in both cases.
