The ideas of the papers in this special section have originally been presented at the first edition of the workshop on Specification and Validation of Real Time and Embedded Systems (SVERTS) that was held as a satellite workshop of the UML 2003 Conference in San Francisco. The motivation for initiating this workshop was the fact that UML started to be used more and more also for modelling real-time and embedded software systems, whereas it was lacking features for appropriately modelling this kind of systems. Another motivation was the fact that UML was missing an accepted dynamic semantics, or at least a framework for defining profiles not just in terms of syntax, but also their semantics. The six papers in this section reflect all parts of this problem. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SOFTWARE engineering ,CONFERENCES & conventions ,COMPUTERS ,ELECTRONIC systems - Abstract
The Symposium on Foundations in Software Engineering is an annual conference sponsored by Association for Computing Machinery, a computer portal and dedicated to the presentation of innovative research results contributing to an engineering discipline for software systems. This special section of the July 1998 issue of the journal IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering features three of the best papers from the fourth symposium, held in October 1996 in San Francisco, California. During its first half-decade, research results presented at this conference have covered engineering research topics. However, a number of distinguishing properties tend to characterize the best of the papers and have helped set the standards for high-quality software engineering research. The three papers in this special section illustrate these properties. One of the critical challenges for software engineering research is to find practical tools that help system builder restructure existing systems. Mark Moriconi was general chair for the symposium and deserves considerable credit for its success.

CIVIL religion ,CONFERENCES & conventions ,POLITICAL science ,EVANGELISTS - Abstract
This article provides information on several research papers presented at a symposium on civil religion in San Francisco, California on August 24, 1975. A central question was raised by William Garrett about the existence civil religion whether it prevails as the dominant interpretive tradition through which the majority of U.S. citizens ascribe a religious dimension to their civic existence. Garrett argues his own thesis about limited scope in three parts. First, he examines civil religion within the functionalist stance which, he claims, is the theoretical framework in sociologist Robert Bellah's discussions. Then he explores both the religious roots and the carriers to civil religious sentiments through an analysis that is at once historical and sociological. The evangelical tradition in his view is the source of those ideas of natural rights which constitute the unique principles of U.S. political theory and the substantive doctrines of civil religion. He concludes that the founding fathers in effect overlaid deist notions on ideas and principles found originally among evangelicals, disestablished sects and revivalists.

This essay provides an overview of the 11th International Conference of the Greening of Industry Network held in San Francisco, USA, on 12–15 October 2003. The conference gave Greening of Industry Network (GIN) members the opportunity to debate issues around the theme of Innovating for Sustainability in a location central to technological innovation in the United States. This special issue of Business Strategy and the Environment focuses on the diverse interpretations of innovation and their impacts on the different strands of sustainability. The conference was timely in its debates about the nature of innovation from system level to product level, and from technological innovation to innovations in the management of a wide range of stakeholders and the resulting impacts on environmental, economic, social and ethical sustainability. This essay briefly discusses the relationship between innovation and sustainability, and considers the factors that either facilitate progress towards a more sustainable future, or present barriers to achieving sustainability. An awareness of the growing importance of the Chinese overseas was recognized in convening the major conference Luodi-shenggen: The Legal Political and Economic Status of Chinese in Diaspora, which was held in San Francisco, California in November 1992. The organizing committee had designated five major themes around which participants could write their papers. Panels were created around these themes, with additional panels developed around topics that emerged as being of concern as planning for the conference progressed. Concern tended to center around the general issues of overseas Chinese communities and, in particular, the origin and structure of new Chinatowns. In total, over 140 papers were presented encompassing these themes during the three days of the conference. Just under half of the papers were presented in Chinese and the rest in English. The sessions on business relations devoted much attention to the strategies of Chinese entrepreneurs within both local and regional contexts. The sessions on migration covered the gamut from theoretical, global aspects of the Chinese diaspora to local dimensions of the Chinese migrant and criminal law. Particular attention was focused on two of the main destinations of migration such as Australia and Canada.

The article presents several abstracts of papers that were presented at the Winter Simulation conference held in San Francisco, California, January 17-19, 1973. One of the papers discusses that a model of human motivation is formulated on the basis of A.H. Maslow's need theory. Additionally, behaviors are selected by degree of tension and are reinforced by environmental reactions which facilitate or frustrate reduction of tension according to the aggressiveness of behavior. In the paper "Simulation of Sequential Production Systems With In-Process Inventory," by David R. Anderson, Brian D. Sellers, and Mohammed M. Shamma, a general class of simulation models of production lines is studied to formulate theories on system behavior. All of the systems have normally distributed processing times as an approximation to conditions often encountered in the manufacturing environment. The paper "Cased Goods Conveyor Simulator," by Donald A. Heimburger focuses on the Simscript Conveyor Program that models the flow of cased goods through an accumulating powered belt conveyor system.

This article presents proceedings of the 108th annual meeting of the American Economic Association (AEA) held in San Francisco, California from January 5-7, 1996. The John Bates Clark Medal for 1995 is awarded to the economist David Card in recognition of these impressive achievements. Card has largely defined and developed the currently dominant methodology in applied labor economics. This approach sets out a testable hypothesis, searches for exogenous variation in the key determinants, and leads to the labor and time-intensive development of an appropriate data base. He has successfully applied this methodology to the most important issues in labor economics, and his research papers have achieved the status of standard references in many areas. The one hundred and eighth annual meeting of AEA was called to order by President Victor Fuchs on January 6, 1996. The first item on the agenda to be considered was minutes of the previous annual meeting as published in Papers and Proceedings issue of the journal "The American Economic Review."

In this paper I explore how my values based practice has helped me develop my authenticity as a leader of a care-givers' centre. I use the American term care-giver as this is based on a presentation I gave at the inaugural conference of the Action Research Network of the Americas in San Francisco 1-2 May 2013. In the UK we are called a carers' centre and our aim is to support unpaid carers who care for a family member or friend who could not manage without their help due to illness or disability. The article presents a discussion on the congress of American Sociological Association in San Francisco, California, in August 2004. To reflect on congresses and exhibitions is a sociological work since, in addition to the information that they provide on the development of the profession of sociologist, they have a symbolic considerable impact. Already before the globalization, several professional North American affiliations turn into the international affiliations of the discipline. What is discussed in the San Francisco congress has so many relevancy for Spain as the Eighth Spanish Congress of Sociology, in September, 2004 in Alicante, Spain. The majority of the specialties coincide. Some papers and debates are similar. The methodological problems are also common in both the congresses. The ideas that they discuss in the world, fortunately, already do not diminish to a geographical national ambience. Almost two hundred specific sessions with written communications have been distributed.

SOCIOLOGY ,PROFESSIONAL ethics ,SOCIAL problems ,SOCIAL status ,CONFERENCES & conventions ,HIPPIES - Abstract
In the article, the author discusses the change in the field of sociology. He suggests that a larger proportion of sociologists are now being drawn from background, with relatively high socio-econoimc status. This makes them less Iikely to be threatened by events which may lower the status of the profession. Within this group, those who are most confident and secure of their position within the profession will lead the attack on a role conception which offers protection from a threat they do not feel. As an example, the author discusses the 62nd Annual Meeting of the American Sociological Association held in San Francisco, California in 1967. The hippie influences and political activities in San Francisco are discussed. A significant number of younger sociologists and sociology graduate students embrace a conception of their professional role that differs in at least two important respects from earlier and still dominant conceptions in the profession. The author describes the newer conception to identify the underlying premises which make it differ from the more traditional view.
