In academic conferences, the structure of the review process has always been considered a critical aspect of ensuring the quality of the conferences. Assigning reviews manually, by either the TPC chairs or Area Chairs, is time-consuming, and the process does not scale well to the number of submitted papers. Organizing a conference with multiple symposia (or tracks) helps its scalability, but predetermined boundaries between tracks may lead to inefficient use of reviewer expertise and suboptimal review assignment. Inspired by a rich literature on the problem of automated review assignment, we have designed and implemented a new review assignment system, called Erie, and successfully deployed it for IEEE INFOCOM 2015 and INFOCOM 2016. Implemented in Python, Erie is designed to use Latent Semantic Indexing to compute the suitability score between a submitted paper and a reviewer's representative papers, and to solve an optimization problem that maximizes the total suitability score across all submitted papers to the conference. Anecdotal evidence shows that Erie outperformed the accuracy of manual assignments by Area Chairs, and helped to improve the percentage of expert reviewers by a substantial margin. To satisfy the requirement of quality control in printing and packaging industry, a sheet counting apparatus is developed, which adopts a line-scan camera to image the fringes of sheet stack and is able to provide a real-time and noncontact measurement of their quantity. With a brief introduction of the system architecture, our main work focuses on the sheet counting algorithms. The basic principle is to identify each sheet profile from the 1-D image with a robust ridge strength measurement. First, a multiscale bi-Gaussian ridge likelihood measurement and a ridge-valley descriptor are utilized to improve adjacent objects detection by increasing local contrast around sheet fringes. Then, a sheet recognition scheme, which integrates a peak detection algorithm and the ridge region criteria for verification, is proposed to discriminate true sheets from the obtained ridgeness measure. According to experiments and tests in real production lines, our apparatus can reach a very high measuring accuracy for printing papers or cards with a thickness not <0.2 mm. Parallel test paper generation is a biobjective distributed resource optimization problem, which aims to generate multiple similarly optimal test papers automatically according to multiple user-specified assessment criteria. Generating high-quality parallel test papers is challenging due to its NP-hardness in both of the collective objective functions. In this paper, we propose a submodular memetic approximation algorithm for solving this problem. The proposed algorithm is an adaptive memetic algorithm (MA), which exploits the submodular property of the collective objective functions to design greedy-based approximation algorithms for enhancing steps of the multiobjective MA. Synergizing the intensification of submodular local search mechanism with the diversification of the population-based submodular crossover operator, our algorithm can jointly optimize the total quality maximization objective and the fairness quality maximization objective. Our MA can achieve provable near-optimal solutions in a huge search space of large datasets in efficient polynomial runtime. In many applications, top-k query is an important operation to return a set of interesting points in a potentially huge data space. It is analyzed in this paper that the existing algorithms cannot process top- k query on massive data efficiently. This paper proposes a novel table-scan-based T2S algorithm to efficiently compute top-k results on massive data. T2S first constructs the presorted table, whose tuples are arranged in the order of the round-robin retrieval on the sorted lists. T2S maintains only fixed number of tuples to compute results. The early termination checking for T2S is presented in this paper, along with the analysis of scan depth. The selective retrieval is devised to skip the tuples in the presorted table which are not top-k results. The theoretical analysis proves that selective retrieval can reduce the number of the retrieved tuples significantly. The construction and incremental-update/batch-processing methods for the used structures are proposed in this paper. This paper considers a general stochastic resource allocation problem that arises widely in wireless networks, cognitive radio, networks, smart-grid communications, and cross-layer design. The problem formulation involves expectations with respect to a collection of random variables with unknown distributions, representing exogenous quantities such as channel gain, user density, or spectrum occupancy. We consider the constant step-size stochastic dual subgradient descent (SDSD) method that has been widely used for online resource allocation in networks. The problem is solved in dual domain, which results in a primal resource allocation subproblem at each time instant. The goal here is to characterize the non-asymptotic behavior of such stochastic resource allocations in an almost sure sense. It is well known that with a step size of \epsilon , SDSD converges to an \mathcal {O}(\epsilon) -sized neighborhood of the optimum. In practice, however, there exists a trade-off between the rate of convergence and the choice of \epsilon $ . This paper establishes a convergence rate result for the SDSD algorithm that precisely characterizes this trade-off. Toward this end, a novel stochastic bound on the gap between the objective function and the optimum is developed. The asymptotic behavior of the stochastic term is characterized in an almost sure sense, thereby generalizing the existing results for the stochastic subgradient methods. For the stochastic resource allocation problem at hand, the result explicates the rate with which the allocated resources become near-optimal. As an application, the power and user-allocation problem in device-to-device networks is formulated and solved using the SDSD algorithm. This paper compares three modern and two classical multiobjective optimizers (MOOs) as applied to real-world problems in electromagnetics. The behavior of sophisticated optimizers on simple test functions has been studied exhaustively. In contrast, the algorithms here are tested on practical applications, where the function evaluations are computationally expensive, making the convergence rate a crucial factor. The examples considered include the optimization of a narrowband slot antenna, a mushroom-type electromagnetic bandgap structure, and an ultrawideband Vivaldi antenna. Another popular topic in the literature is in comparing classical MOOs on electromagnetics problems. The modern optimizers chosen in this paper are state of the art and each has a distinct design philosophy. This paper introduces two unique MOOs to the electromagnetics community: BORG, an auto-adaptive genetic algorithm and the Multi-Objective Covariance Matrix Adaptation Evolutionary Strategy (MO-CMA-ES), an extension of the popular single-objective CMA-ES. These algorithms are compared to the Multi-objective Evolutionary Algorithm based on Decomposition (MOEA/D), a Chebysheff scalarization algorithm, and two classical MOOs. This paper will study the behavior of these algorithms on problems in electromagnetics with a limited number of function evaluations using five distinct metrics and will provide useful guidelines and recommended optimizer settings. Intra prediction algorithm used in High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard has very high computational complexity. Therefore, in this paper, a novel technique is proposed for reducing amount of computations performed by HEVC intra prediction algorithm and, therefore, reducing energy consumption of HEVC intra prediction hardware. The proposed technique significantly reduced the amount of computations performed by 4x4, 8x8, 16x16 and 32x32 luminance angular prediction modes. The proposed technique does not affect the PSNR and bit rate. In this paper, a low energy HEVC intra prediction hardware for 4x4, 8x8, 16x16 and 32x32 angular prediction modes is also designed and implemented using Verilog HDL. The proposed technique significantly reduced the energy consumption of the HEVC intra prediction hardware. In this paper, we consider the problem of learning undirected graphical models from data generated according to the Glauber dynamics (also known as the Gibbs sampler). The Glauber dynamics is a Markov chain that sequentially updates individual nodes (variables) in a graphical model and it is frequently used to sample from the stationary distribution (to which it converges given sufficient time). Additionally, the Glauber dynamics is a natural dynamical model in a variety of settings. This paper deviates from the standard formulation of graphical model learning in the literature, where one assumes access to independent identically distributed samples from the distribution. Much of the research on graphical model learning has been directed toward finding algorithms with low computational cost. As the main result of this paper, we establish that the problem of reconstructing binary pairwise graphical models is computationally tractable when we observe the Glauber dynamics. Specifically, we show that a binary pairwise graphical model on p nodes with maximum degree d can be learned in time f(d)p^2\log p , for a function f(d) defined explicitly in this paper, using nearly the information-theoretic minimum number of samples. Role assignment is a critical element in the role-based collaboration process. There are many different requirements to be considered when undertaking this task. This correspondence paper formalizes the group multirole assignment (GMRA) problem; proves the necessary and sufficient condition for the problem to have a feasible solution, provides an improved IBM ILOG CPLEX optimization package solution, and verifies the proposed solution with experiments. The contributions of this paper include: 1) the formalization of an important engineering problem, i.e., the GMRA problem; 2) a theoretical proof of the necessary and sufficient condition for GMRA to have a feasible solution; and 3) an improved ILOG solution to such a problem. A fault tree (FT) defines an undesired top event, characterizing it using logic combinations of lower-level undesired events. In this paper, we focus on coherent FTs, i.e., the logic is restricted to AND/OR formulas. FT analysis is used to identify and assess the minimal cut sets (MCSs) of an FT, which define the minimal set of events leading to the undesired state. The dual of MCS is minimal path set (MPS). MCS and MPS are commonly used for qualitative evaluation of FTs in safety and reliability engineering. This paper explores computation of the MCS/MPS of an FT by means of structural analysis (namely, computation of minimal p -semiflows) of a Petri net (PN) that represents the FT. To this end, we propose a formal definition of a coherent FT and a transformation from this model to a PN subclass (namely, structurally persistent nets). We also prove the relationship between minimal p -semiflows and MCS/MPS in an FT. In addition, we propose an algorithm that uses linear programming techniques to compute the MCS/MPS in an FT. This paper is concerned with the consensus problem of general linear dynamic multiagent systems with stochastic sampling. In this paper, the sampling intervals randomly switch between two different values. The communication topology between agents is fixed and directed. Full- and reduced-order observers are designed based on neighbor agents’ relative output information. The algorithms to construct such observers are also provided. By using the estimated states of the agents, the observer-based consensus protocol with stochastic sampling are presented. Sufficient conditions to ensure consensus in mean square are derived by using Lyapunov stability theory. Finally, simulations are given to examine the effectiveness of the proposed methods. Total variation (TV) is a one of the most popular regularizers for stabilizing the solution of ill-posed inverse problems. This paper proposes a novel proximal-gradient algorithm for minimizing TV regularized least-squares cost functionals. Unlike traditional methods that require nested iterations for computing the proximal step of TV, our algorithm approximates the latter with several simple proximals that have closed form solutions. We theoretically prove that the proposed parallel proximal method achieves the TV solution with arbitrarily high precision at a global rate of converge that is equivalent to the fast proximal-gradient methods. This paper validates two approximate dynamic programming approaches on a maritime interdiction problem involving the allocation of multiple heterogeneous assets over a large area of responsibility to interdict multiple drug smugglers using heterogeneous types of transportation on the sea with varying contraband weights. The asset allocation is based on a probability of activity surface, which represents spatio-temporal target activity obtained by integrating intelligence data on drug smuggler whereabouts/waypoints for contraband transportation, behavior models, and meteorological and oceanographic information. We validate the proposed architectural and algorithmic concepts via several realistic mission scenarios. We conduct sensitivity analyses to quantify the robustness and proactivity of our approach, as well as to measure the value of information used in the allocation process. In this paper, adaptive quantized state estimation fusion is deeply studied. To approach the model mismatching problem induced by random quantization, some quantized Kalman filters have been presented in the previous work, such as the quantized Kalman filter with strong tracking filtering (QKF-STF), the variational Bayesian adaptive quantized Kalman filter (VB-AQKF), and a centralized fusion frame-based complex quantized filter called variational Bayesian adaptive QKF-STF (VB-AQKF-STF). Based on the previous work for the single sensor system, a distributed complex quantized filter is designed in this paper. A novel quantized Kalman filter based on multiple-method fusion scheme (QKF-MMF) is proposed. Similar to the VB-AQKF-STF, the QKF-MMF can also realize joint estimation on the state and the quantization error covariance under the distributed fusion frame. Furthermore, it extends the single sensor results to multisensor tracking systems by using centralized and distributed fusion frames. Two multisensor quantized fusion estimators are proposed for a parallel structure with main-secondary processors in the fusion center. The weighted fusion and embedded integration ways are deeply applied to design the multisensor quantized fusion methods. This paper presents an approach to obtain high torque density in induction motor (IM) design by optimizing the search algorithms and processes. Optimal design of electrical machines has many sub-optimal peaks and requires significant computation time. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a new cost pattern value method (CPVM) for local search algorithms employed in optimal design. The CPVM concept is an intelligent strategy that digitizes the gradient over the searching region by sharing information between neighboring points. When the algorithm converges quickly to local optimum by a normalized weight method, it provides a mechanism to escape from that region. The validity of the proposed approach was evaluated using a benchmark function, and it was applied to optimal design of a 260 kW IM to maximize torque production based on a finite-element analysis. Rate control typically involves two steps: bit allocation and bitrate control. The bit allocation step can be implemented in various fashions depending on how many levels of allocation are desired and whether or not an optimal rate–distortion (R-D) performance is pursued. The bitrate control step has a simple aim in achieving the target bitrate as precisely as possible. In our recent research, we have developed a \lambda -domain rate control algorithm that is capable of controlling the bitrate precisely for High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). The initial research showed that the bitrate control in the \lambda -domain can be more precise than the conventional schemes. However, the simple bit allocation scheme adopted in this initial research is unable to achieve an optimal R-D performance reflecting the inherent R-D characteristics governed by the video content. In order to achieve an optimal R-D performance, the bit allocation algorithms need to be developed taking into account the video content of a given sequence. The key issue in deriving the video-content-guided optimal bit allocation algorithm is to build a suitable R-D model to characterize the R-D behavior of the video content. In this paper, to complement the R- \lambda model developed in our initial work, a D- \lambda model is properly constructed to complete a comprehensive framework of \lambda -domain R-D analysis. Based on this comprehensive \lambda -domain R-D analysis framework, a suite of optimal bit allocation algorithms are developed. In particular, we design both picture-level and basic-unit-level bit allocation algorithms based on the fundamental R-D optimization theory to take full advantage of the content-guided principles. The proposed algorithms are implemented in HEVC reference software, and the experimental results demonstrate that they can achieve an obvious R-D performance improvement with a smaller bitrate control error. The main aim of this paper is to develop a community discovery scheme in a multi-dimensional network for data mining applications. In online social media, networked data consists of multiple dimensions/entities such as users, tags, photos, comments, and stories. We are interested in finding a group of users who interact significantly on these media entities. In a co-citation network, we are interested in finding a group of authors who relate to other authors significantly on publication information in titles, abstracts, and keywords as multiple dimensions/entities in the network. The main contribution of this paper is to propose a framework (MultiComm)to identify a seed-based community in a multi-dimensional network by evaluating the affinity between two items in the same type of entity (same dimension)or different types of entities (different dimensions)from the network. Our idea is to calculate the probabilities of visiting each item in each dimension, and compare their values to generate communities from a set of seed items. In order to evaluate a high quality of generated communities by the proposed algorithm, we develop and study a local modularity measure of a community in a multi-dimensional network. Experiments based on synthetic and real-world data sets suggest that the proposed framework is able to find a community effectively. Experimental results have also shown that the performance of the proposed algorithm is better in accuracy than the other testing algorithms in finding communities in multi-dimensional networks. A schedule-based system is a system that operates on or contains within a schedule of events and breaks at particular time intervals. Entities within the system show presence or absence in these events by entering or exiting the locations of the events. Given radio frequency identification (RFID) data from a schedule-based system, what can we learn about the system (the events and entities) through data mining? Which data mining methods can be applied so that one can obtain rich actionable insights regarding the system and the domain? The research goal of this paper is to answer these posed research questions, through the development of a framework that systematically produces actionable insights for a given schedule-based system. We show that through integrating appropriate data mining methodologies as a unified framework, one can obtain many insights from even a very simple RFID dataset, which contains only very few fields. The developed framework is general, and is applicable to any schedule-based system, as long as it operates under certain basic assumptions. The types of insights are also general, and are formulated in this paper in the most abstract way. The applicability of the developed framework is illustrated through a case study, where real world data from a schedule-based system is analyzed using the introduced framework. This paper applies a new technique for modal decomposition based solely on measurements to test systems and demonstrates the technique's capability for partitioning a power network, which determines the points of separation in an islanding strategy. The mathematical technique is called the Koopman mode analysis (KMA) and stems from a spectral analysis of the so-called Koopman operator. Here, KMA is numerically approximated by applying an Arnoldi-like algorithm recently first applied to power system dynamics. In this paper we propose a practical data-driven algorithm incorporating KMA for network partitioning. Comparisons are made with two techniques previously applied for the network partitioning: spectral graph theory which is based on the eigenstructure of the graph Laplacian, and slow-coherency which identifies coherent groups of generators for a specified number of low-frequency modes. The partitioning results share common features with results obtained with graph theory and slow-coherency-based techniques. The suggested partitioning method is evaluated with two test systems, and similarities between Koopman modes and Laplacian eigenvectors are showed numerically and elaborated theoretically. Cooperative communication exploits spatial diversity via relay node antennas to increase data rates in wireless networks. Relay node selection, therefore, plays a critical role in system performance. This paper examines the problem of relay node selection in cooperative networks, in which one relay node can be used by multiple source–destination transmission pairs, and all transmission pairs share the same set of relay nodes. Centralized approaches may exhibit higher complexity when the number of source nodes is increased. This paper gives source nodes self-optimizing and self-learning abilities and enables them to autonomously select relay nodes. A fully distributed approach, called a “Decentralized Learning-based Relay Assignment” (DLRA) algorithm, is proposed to achieve this goal. DLRA uses a reinforcement learning technique called stochastic learning automata, with each source node attaining the self-learning ability to find an appropriate relay node according to environmental feedback. This paper shows the convergency, optimality, and performance of DLRA via mathematical analysis and evaluates the performance of DLRA in two different network systems: a cooperative ad hoc network and a Long-Term Evolution (LTE)-Advanced relay network. The experimental results present several properties of DLRA: the effectiveness of DLRA in cooperative communication systems, the significant improvements made by DLRA in fairness, and the capacity of each node in LTE-Advanced systems. This paper proposes a new framework for the design of transmit and receive beamformers for interference alignment (IA) without symbol extensions in multi-antenna cellular networks. We consider IA in a G cell network with K users/cell, N antennas at each base station (BS) and M antennas at each user. The proposed framework is developed by recasting the conditions for IA as two sets of rank constraints, one on the rank of interference matrices, and the other on the transmit beamformers in the uplink. The interference matrix consists of all the interfering vectors received at a BS from the out-of-cell users in the uplink. Using these conditions and the crucial observation that the rank of interference matrices under alignment can be determined beforehand, this paper develops two sets of algorithms for IA. The first part of this paper develops rank minimization algorithms for IA by iteratively minimizing a weighted matrix norm of the interference matrix. Different choices of matrix norms lead to reweighted nuclear norm minimization (RNNM) or reweighted Frobenius norm minimization (RFNM) algorithms with significantly different per-iteration complexities. Alternately, the second part of this paper devises an alternating minimization (AM) algorithm where the rank-deficient interference matrices are expressed as a product of two lower-dimensional matrices that are then alternately optimized. Simulation results indicate that RNNM, which has a per-iteration complexity of a semidefinite program, is effective in designing aligned beamformers for proper-feasible systems with or without redundant antennas, while RFNM and AM, which have a per-iteration complexity of a quadratic program, are better suited for systems with redundant antennas. In this paper, we propose a novel rigid-body motion segmentation algorithm that uses randomized voting to assign high scores to correctly estimated models and low scores to wrongly estimated models. This algorithm is based on an epipolar geometrical representation of the camera motion, and computes scores using the distance between the feature point and the corresponding epipolar line. These scores are accumulated and utilized for motion segmentation. To evaluate the efficacy of our algorithm, we conduct a series of experiments using the Hopkins 155 data set and the UdG data set, which are representative test sets for rigid motion segmentation. Among several state-of-the-art data sets, our algorithm achieves the most accurate motion segmentation results and, in the presence of measurement noise, achieves comparable results to the other algorithms. The error floor phenomenon in many low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes is caused by combinatorial objects in their Tanner graph, known as absorbing sets. In this paper, we highlight a threshold behavior for the min-sum decoding algorithm in the graph of an absorbing set with fixed-point representation of messages. For an absorbing set of interest in a binary LDPC code we can compute the threshold, a novel real-valued parameter that is closely related to its harmfulness. We show that absorbing sets with negative thresholds cannot trap the decoder if the dynamic range of the extrinsic messages is large enough. We also prove that, in regular LDPC codes, absorbing sets with negative thresholds exist if the variable node degree is odd. The examples presented in this paper show that odd-column-weight LDPC codes can have many absorbing sets with negative thresholds, but that these absorbing sets do not trap a well-designed decoder. Hypergraph matching has recently become a popular approach for solving correspondence problems in computer vision as it allows the use of higher-order geometric information. Hypergraph matching can be formulated as a third-order optimization problem subject to assignment constraints which turns out to be NP-hard. In recent work, we have proposed an algorithm for hypergraph matching which first lifts the third-order problem to a fourth-order problem and then solves the fourth-order problem via optimization of the corresponding multilinear form. This leads to a tensor block coordinate ascent scheme which has the guarantee of providing monotonic ascent in the original matching score function and leads to state-of-the-art performance both in terms of achieved matching score and accuracy. In this paper we show that the lifting step to a fourth-order problem can be avoided yielding a third-order scheme with the same guarantees and performance but being two times faster. We consider the problem of multiantenna source detection with dimension reduction in distributed wireless networks. Traditional strategies typically collect and perform raw data at the fusion center. In moderate-to-large-scale networks, however, the schemes create the bottleneck of computation and communication for high-dimensional data. The goal of this paper is to design a distributed algorithm in multiple-antenna wireless networks to project the raw data into the low-dimensional data to reduce the communication and computation burden while maintaining high detection performance. In this paper, a pseudosketching matrix is constructed to transform the raw data of each multiple-antenna node into the low-dimensional data. Furthermore, it is transformed into the vector by using the subspace method. By gathering the data vectors of all nodes at the fusion center, the eigenvalue-based detection methods, such as the generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT), can be applied directly to determine if the source signal exists or not. Moreover, using the concentration inequalities of subgamma random variables, the theoretical analysis is derived to support the claim that the proposed algorithm has high detection performance. Lift-off variation causes errors in the eddy current thickness measurements of metallic plates. In this paper, we have developed an algorithm that can compensate for this variation and produce an index that is linked to the thickness, but is virtually independent of lift-off. This index, termed as the compensated peak frequency, can be obtained from the measured multifrequency inductance spectral data using the algorithm we developed in this paper. This method has been derived through mathematical manipulation and verified by both the simulation and experimental data. While the detection of the interesting regions in images has been extensively studied, relatively few papers have addressed surfaces. This paper proposes an algorithm for detecting the regions of interest of surfaces. It looks for regions that are distinct both locally and globally and accounts for the distance to the foci of attention. It is also shown how this algorithm can be adopted to saliency detection in point clouds. Many applications can utilize these regions. In this paper we explore one such application—viewpoint selection. The most informative views are those that collectively provide the most descriptive presentation of the surface. There has been a resurgence of research in the design of deep architecture models and learning algorithms, i.e., methods that rely on the extraction of a multilayer representation of the data. Often referred to as deep learning, this topic of research has been building on and contributing to many different research topics, such as neural networks, graphical models, feature learning, unsupervised learning, optimization, pattern recognition, and signal processing. Deep learning is also motivated and inspired by neuroscience and has had a tremendous impact on various applications such as computer vision, speech recognition, and natural language processing. Multiple images have been widely used for scene understanding and navigation of unmanned ground vehicles in long term operations. However, as the amount of visual data in multiple images is huge, the cumulative error in many cases becomes untenable. This paper proposes a novel method that can extract features from a large dataset of multiple images efficiently. Then the membership ${K}$ -means clustering is used for high dimensional features, and the large dataset is divided into ${N}$ subdatasets to train ${N}$ conditional random field (CRF) models based on superpixel. A Softmax subdataset selector is used to decide which one of the ${N}$ CRF models is chosen as the prediction model for labeling images. In this paper, a data-based control method based on adaptive dynamic programming (ADP) algorithm is proposed for a class of discrete-time (DT) systems in the case of multiple delays. Data-based ADP method is implemented by virtue of the measured input and output data. The condition of the existence of the corresponding equivalent multiple delays system is derived according to the characteristics of time-delay system. A novel data-based state equation is developed that only composed of input and output data, which is very meaningful in practical applications. By using the data-based ADP method, the output feedback control problem is solved only by measuring the input and output of the system with multiple delays. The convergence proofs of the designed policy iteration and value iteration algorithms are given, respectively. The spiral optimization (SPO) algorithm proposed by Tamura and Yasuda is a relatively novel and simple search concept inspired by natural spiral phenomena. This algorithm searches continuous space using no gradient and only spiral trajectories composed of spiral vectors generated by deterministic spiral models. The primary purpose of this paper is to propose conditions and settings that mathematically ensure the convergence of the SPO algorithm to a stationary point. The conditions relating to the sizes and directions of the spiral vectors and the initial search points are based on direct search theory and recent SPO algorithm theories. Recursion is one of the most difficult programming topics for students. In this paper, an instructional method is proposed to enhance students' understanding of recursion tracing. The proposal is based on the use of rules to translate linear recursion algorithms into equivalent, iterative ones. The paper has two main contributions: the instructional method itself, and its evaluation, which is based on previous works of other authors on mental models of recursion. As a result, an enhancement was measured in the viability of mental models exhibited by students (both for linear and multiple recursion), but no significant improvement was detected in their skills for designing recursive algorithms. Evidence was also obtained of the fact that many students with (relatively) viable mental models for linear recursion have unviable mental models for multiple recursion. This paper presents the extension of framework for automatic design space exploration (FADSE) tool using a meta-optimization approach, which is used to improve the performance of design space exploration algorithms, by driving two different multiobjective meta-heuristics concurrently. More precisely, we selected two genetic multiobjective algorithms: 1) non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II and 2) strength Pareto evolutionary algorithm 2, that work together in order to improve both the solutions’ quality and the convergence speed. With the proposed improvements, we ran FADSE in order to optimize the hardware parameters’ values of the grid ALU processor (GAP) micro-architecture from a bi-objective point of view (performance and hardware complexity). Using our developed approach we obtained better GAP instances (a configuration has for almost the same cycles per instruction – 1.00, the hardware complexity 38% smaller/better – 35.81 versus 58.61) in half of the time compared to a classical sequential optimization approach (5 days versus 10 days). Performance of the Kalman filter (KF) is degraded when dealing with nonlinear dynamic systems. For a kind of nonlinear biomechatronics system, a fifth-degree ensemble iterated cubature square-root information filter (EsFICIF), which can effectively improve estimation performance, is proposed by combing many estimation schemes. Moreover, the associated multisensor fusion is deeply studied based on this proposed nonlinear filter in this paper. That is, four classic nonlinear fusion methods, which include augmented measurements fusion, weighted measurements fusion, sequential filtering fusion, and distributed filtering fusion, are compared on estimation performance. The motivation of this paper is to extend the work on estimation performance comparison of nonlinear fusion methods based on the conventional extended KF and to validate some basic conclusions existed in the traditional linear data fusion theory based on the proposed EsFICIF. The estimation accuracies of the four nonlinear fusion methods are compared and the exchanging property of measurements update order is also discussed. It is observed that, when the measurement properties are identical, the estimation accuracies of augmented measurements fusion, weighted measurements fusion, and distributed feedback fusion are equivalent, while the sequential filtering fusion does not hold. Furthermore, the exchanging property of the measurements update order of the sequential filtering fusion can no longer be guaranteed. These results further show some basic conclusions existed in linear fusion theory are no longer valid for nonlinear systems and the conclusions based on the EKF are still available for more complex nonlinear filters. Viterbi detectors are widely used in all communication systems dealing with transmission and storage. In this paper, we develop the theory and design architecture for a 2-D separable iterative soft-output Viterbi detector (SISOVD) for applications in 2-D storage channels extending the original work from Wu et al. (IEEE Trans. Magn., vol. 39, no. 4, pp. 2115–2120, Jul. 2003). The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, we design a non-binary soft Viterbi detector that will be used as the core engine for the SISOVD and show its equivalence to the max-log-MAP algorithm implementation. We also study the performance of the algorithm through simulations under various design parameter constraints toward a systems architecture. Second, we propose a novel digital circuit that incorporates non-uniform quantization within a sliding block design framework. The proposed detector system architecture is tested within an field programmable gate array platform and proved to be efficient in terms of resource utilization, timing, and power compared with a conventional uniform quantizer with no signal-to-noise ratio performance degradation. It shows a 13.28% reduction in the total number of slice registers, 30.26% reduction in the slice lookup tables, 21.23% reduction in the critical path delay, and 14.84% reduction in the power consumption compared with the uniform quantizer. This paper studies a single beacon-based three-dimensional multirobot localization (MRL) problem. Unlike most of existing localization algorithms which use extended Kalman filter or maximum a posteriori, moving horizon estimation (MHE), and convex optimization are novelly designed to perform MRL with constraints and unknown initial poses. The main contribution of this paper is three-fold: 1) a constrained MHE-based localization algorithm, which can bound localization error, impose various constraints and compromise between computational complexity and estimator accuracy, is proposed to estimate robot poses; 2) constrained optimization is examined in the perspective of Fisher information matrix to analyze why and how multirobot information and constraints are able to reduce uncertainties; 3) a semidefinite programming-based initial pose estimation, which can efficiently converge to global optimum, is developed by using convex relaxation. Social-spider optimization (SSO) is a new nature-inspired algorithm of the swarm intelligence field to global optimization applications, which is based on the simulation of cooperative behavior of social spiders. To enhance the performance of the standard SSO, a modified SSO (MSSO) approach based on beta distribution and natural gradient local search was proposed in this paper. In order to verify the performance of the MSSO, tests using Loney’s solenoid benchmark and a brushless direct current motor benchmark are realized comparing the effectiveness of the SSO and the proposed MSSO. In this paper, we propose a microwave imaging technique that involves an adaptive back-projection (BP) algorithm based on a climb method. In general, the range migration algorithm (RMA) provides high computational efficiency and high accuracy for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging. However, RMA involves wavenumber domain interpolation, which may adversely affect the accuracy of the target imaging. The BP algorithm, which has its origins in medical imaging techniques, has been studied to overcome this problem in SAR imaging, because it avoids interpolation associated with domain conversion, but it also has a huge computational cost. Therefore, this paper proposes adaptive processing based on a climb method to find the target indicator as real target responses. The real target responses are predetermined and the raw data are reproduced to reduce the computational cost and to improve the image quality. In network-centric warfare, the interconnections among various combat resources enable an advanced operational pattern of cooperative engagement. The operational effectiveness and outcome strongly depends on the reasonable utilization of available sensors and weapons. In this paper, a mathematical model for the coallocation of sensors and weapons is built, taking into account the interdependencies between weapons and sensors, the resource constraints, the capability constraints, as well as the strategy constraints. A marginal-return-based constructive heuristic (MRBCH) is proposed to solve the formulated sensor–weapon–target assignment (S-WTA) problem. MRBCH exploits the marginal return of each sensor–weapon–target triplet and dynamically updates the threat value of all targets. It relies only on simple lookup operations to choose each assignment triplet, thus resulting in very low computational complexity. For performance evaluation, we build a general Monte Carlo simulation-based S-WTA framework. Furthermore, we employ a random sampling method and an extension of the state-of-the-art algorithm Swt_opt as competitors. The computational results show that MRBCH consistently performs very well in solving S-WTA instances of different scales, and it can generate assignment schemes much more efficiently than its competitors. Batch measurement of sheet-like product quantity is very common in manufacturing and commercial areas. Particularly, to satisfy the growing requirement of automatic and nondestructive detection, a machine vision system for stacked substrates counting is proposed in this paper. With a brief description of the system architecture and imaging module, the challenges for real data analysis are investigated. Our main contribution is to develop a robust stripe detection algorithm by combining the merits of local template matching and global frequency domain filtering. Besides the peak-valley feature across the stack profile, the collinear prior shape along the substrates is also utilized in a morphological scheme to purify the obtained ridge-line or stripe images, which, finally, benefits the statistical counting output. It is verified in experiments using a diversity of substrate media that our developed system can achieve a high counting accuracy with the detection error not more than 0.01% as the sample thickness varies between 0.05 mm and 0.5 mm. We consider the probabilistic group testing problem where $d$ random defective items in a large population of $N$ items are identified with high probability by applying binary tests. It is known that the $\Theta (d \log N)$ tests are necessary and sufficient to recover the defective set with vanishing probability of error when $d = O(N^{\alpha })$ for some $\alpha \in (0, 1)$. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is no explicit (deterministic) construction achieving $\Theta (d \log N)$ tests in general. In this paper, we show that a famous construction introduced by Kautz and Singleton for the combinatorial group testing problem (which is known to be suboptimal for combinatorial group testing for moderate values of $d$) achieves the order optimal $\Theta (d \log N)$ tests in the probabilistic group testing problem when $d = \Omega (\log ^{2}\,\,N)$. This provides a strongly explicit construction achieving the order optimal result in the probabilistic group testing setting for a wide range of values of $d$. To prove the order-optimality of Kautz and Singleton’s construction in the probabilistic setting, we provide a novel analysis of the probability of a non-defective item being covered by a random defective set directly, rather than arguing from combinatorial properties of the underlying code, which has been the main approach in the literature. Furthermore, we use a recursive technique to convert this construction into one that can also be efficiently decoded with only a log-log factor increase in the number of tests. Visually analyzing citation networks poses challenges to many fields of the data mining research. How can we summarize a large citation graph according to the user’s interest? In particular, how can we illustrate the impact of a highly influential paper through the summarization? Can we maintain the sensory node-link graph structure while revealing the flow-based influence patterns and preserving a fine readability? The state-of-the-art influence maximization algorithms can detect the most influential node in a citation network, but fail to summarize a graph structure to account for its influence. On the other hand, existing graph summarization methods fold large graphs into clustered views, but can not reveal the hidden influence patterns underneath the citation network. In this paper, we first formally define the Influence Graph Summarization problem on citation networks. Second, we propose a matrix decomposition based algorithm pipeline to solve the IGS problem. Our method can not only highlight the flow-based influence patterns, but also easily extend to support the rich attribute information. A prototype system called VEGAS implementing this pipeline is also developed. Third, we present a theoretical analysis on our main algorithm, which is equivalent to the kernel k-mean clustering. It can be proved that the matrix decomposition based algorithm can approximate the objective of the proposed IGS problem. Last, we conduct comprehensive experiments with real-world citation networks to compare the proposed algorithm with classical graph summarization methods. Evaluation results demonstrate that our method significantly outperforms the previous ones in optimizing both the quantitative IGS objective and the quality of the visual summarizations. In this paper, we study the decoding of dual-containing codes from Hermitian tower and applications to quantum codes. The contribution of this paper is threefold. First, we construct the quantum stabilizer codes from the Hermitian tower. Second, we provide a deterministic decoding algorithm with decoding radius that almost achieves the optimal decoding radius, i.e., $(1-R)/4$ , where $R$ is the rate. Last and most importantly, we present a Monte Carlo algorithm with decoding radius roughly equal to $(1-R)/3$ , which is beyond the optimal decoding radius $(1-R)/4$ . There are several features in this paper. First of all, we employ a differential for the Hermitian tower. This differential plays a crucial role for decoding. In this paper, we propose a characterization of elementary trapping sets (ETSs) for irregular low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. These sets are known to be the main culprits in the error floor region of such codes. The characterization of ETSs for irregular codes has been known to be a challenging problem due to the large variety of non-isomorphic ETS structures that can exist within the Tanner graph of these codes. This is a direct consequence of the variety of the degrees of the variable nodes that can participate in such structures. The proposed characterization is based on a hierarchical graphical representation of ETSs, starting from simple cycles of the graph, or from single variable nodes, and involves three simple expansion techniques: degree-one tree ( dot ), path , and lollipop , thus, the terminology dpl characterization. A similar dpl characterization was proposed in an earlier work by the authors for the leafless ETSs of variable–regular LDPC codes. The present paper generalizes the prior work to codes with a variety of variable node degrees and to ETSs that are not leafless. The proposed dpl characterization corresponds to an efficient search algorithm that, for a given irregular LDPC code, can find all the instances of (a, b) ETSs with size a and b \leq b\max , exhaustively. Although branch-&-bound exhaustive search algorithms for finding ETSs of irregular LDPC codes exist, to the best of our knowledge, the proposed search algorithm is the first of its kind, in that, it is devised based on a characterization of ETSs that makes the search process efficient. For a constant degree distribution and range of search, the worst-case complexity of the proposed dpl algorithm increases linearly with the block length $n$ . The average complexity, excluding the search for the input simple cycles, is constant in $n$ . Extensive simulation results are presented to show the versatility of the search algorithm, and to demonstrate that, compared to the literature, significant improvement in search speed can be obtained.
