The emerging demands for healthcare where access is limited due to political, environmental, or socio-economic factors have been driving research into bio-medical devices that perform in both diagnostic and therapeutic roles at lower costs and greater accessibility. Paper microfluidic devices are used in many applications, particularly medical diagnostics and offer an excellent combination of utility and low cost making them particularly valuable in resource-limited applications and point-of-care usage across a wide variety environmental conditions. Microfluidic biological diagnostics continue to mature as researchers discover new ways to exploit the technological possibilities, and address liabilities. The increasing complexity of paper-based microfluidic devices beyond home pregnancy tests is driving the need to produce new tools and methodologies that enable more robust biological diagnostics and potential therapeutic applications. However, the process of developing new paper microfluidic devices is limited due to having to manually design and fabricate designs to research. Often, researchers must design scores of different devices to find a combination of parameters that functions as expected. In this work, a novel software framework to support automated development of paper-based microfluidic devices is introduced to facilitate both research and fabrication to accelerate the investigative process and reduce material utilization and manpower. Unlike to existing lab-on-a-chip technologies, paper-based microfluidics differs in terms of substrate technologies and use a passive flow method to deliver fluids and reagents for assays. While numerous analogies between microfluidics and semiconductor technologies have been espoused, the physical differences between the fluid dynamics and electrical current are significant which suggests that current trends in physical design for microfluidics must change course in order to be of practical use to designers. Within this framework, a methodology is introduced to address design automation such as dynamically placing and routing microfluidic components in a non-discrete design space while avoiding invalid design layouts, accounting for fluid volume usage, surface area utilization, and the timing required to perform specified biological assays and also optimizing device parameters, enabling researchers to focus on the science and thereby accelerating the development of new, low-resource paper microfluidic devices for a developing world.

This presentation explores how n-grams can be used to automatically classify and learn about music. An overall discussion is provided of various ways in which n-grams can be adapted for use with digital scores, and of how musically meaningful features can be extracted from them. The jSymbolic 3.0 alpha prototype feature extractor is then used in three sets of music classification experiments investigating how n-gram features perform relative to and combined with other types of features extracted from symbolic music files., Funded by the FRQSC and SSHRC.

In this poster we would like to present the new architecture and features of EVT 3 (Edition Visualization Technology), an open source Angular-based tool for the visualization of TEI-XML Digital Scholarly Editions. We will use and showcase two digital philology projects as test bed for the new functionalities.

Digital access to social sciences and humanities (SSH) research resources is necessary to enable broad use. For this purpose, a discovery platform for SSH resources was created. This paper describes its development, based on user, economic, and computer science research methods, and illustrates how such a platform supports social exchange.

We propose and conceptualize an approach for literary network analysis that does not rely on co-appearance, but rather what can be called semantic context: characters are connected if they share a semantic neighborhood, or similar meaning-based contexts, even if they are distant in the text sequence.

Collective sentiment plays a crucial role in financial markets. In this paper, we present our workflow for creating an index that captures the sentiment at the Berlin Stock Exchange from 1872 to 1930. Based on a historical newspaper, we train three models that provide daily aspect-level sentiment data.

This workshop uses the environment created around the HTR-United catalog to demonstrate and discuss how to build a dataset of ground truth for text recognition and document it, and how to use HTR-United and its suite of tools to control its quality and describe it in a standardized way.

The TEITOK REST API lets you interact with your corpus remotely - to upload documents in various formats - automatically converted to TEI/XML; to render search results; to run an NLP pipeline on the server; or download the content of corpus document, treat that content locally with local NLP tools or manual annotation tools, and then upload the results back to the server, where the new or corrected annotations will be incorporated into the original TEI/XML document without destroying any of the potentially complex annotations already in the document.

RDF-star is the technology best suited for the creation of LOD- based editions of metadata-oriented documents such as travel jour- nals. Respectively, SPARQL-star is a powerful tool to query and analyze knowledge graphs with respect to the stored metadata in- formation for triples. We developed an RDF-star-based ontology for travel journals; as a prototype, we have used Jacob Bernoulli’s travel journal Reisbüchlein.

We explore the hypothetical distinction between texts of priestly (P) and non-priestly (nonP) origin in Genesis and Exodus with an independent computational and statistical methodology. We introduce a novel textual stylometry pipeline, where we intertwine descriptive and inferential statistics for distinction optimization, quantification of uncertainty, and feature importance analysis.

Engaging both creators of digital web-based content and researchers of content on the web, this tutorial introduces and demonstrates toolsets for crawling and sharing web archives. Unlike large-scale subscription services like ArchiveIt, these open-source tools allow individuals and small groups to archive websites and web-hosted data more granularly and deeply.

The short presentation introduces the semanticlayertools software package which supports the study of the evolution of scientific fields using network-related methods. An application for the field of astrophysics is presented together with visualization strategies for the emergence of related research fields and the role of specific institutions in thematic clusters.

This study aims to extract people's names from pre-modern Arabic texts. The proposed dictionary-based model eliminates the influence of foreign words and extracts both first names and surnames from three selected corpora. It resolves two fundamental problems faced while performing Named Entity Recognition in Modern Standard Arabic studies.

QTEI is based on two core components: web browser and JavaScript. The webbrowser, as one of the most comprehensive software packages for handling XML, is widely used and easy to maintain by end users. And JS is often part of the solution for rendering TEI/XML anyway, so with QTEI we created a framework that can fully implement a TEI web presence with these technologies.

We present the development of a richly annotated corpus of historical proceedings of the Carniolan Regional Assembly, which was the highest legislative body of the autonomy of the Carniola Herzogtum of the Habsburg Empire. We focus on the procedure used to convert the OCRed scans into Parla-CLARIN TEI encoded documents.

This paper sets out to highlight and address the challenges in working with large audiovisual archives such as the Radio Télévision Suisse collection. The goal of this research is to augment the metadata through Natural Language Processing methods to facilitate access to the archive for the larger public.

This paper explores the practices and experiences we have learned from developing an Open Science Infrastructure in the Asia Pacific. The paper purposes a unique three-pillar model; Advanced Technology to improve internet connectivity, a Knowledge Base on internet engineering, and Community Building across universities.

The improvement of the automatic transcription of manuscripts relies on an easier access to training data of good quality (ground truth). HTR-United offers a solution to find and document such datasets, potentially creating a common. We present the set-up of this ecosystem and its main outcomes.

Texas A&M University's Center of Digital Humanities Research (CoDHR) published the New Variorum Shakespeare (NVS) open-access in digital form, beginning with two editions, The Winter's Tale and A Midsummer Night's Dream in 2021, with plans to move forward with new editors who are under contract to create editions digitally in Corpora, and backward to eventually include all the volumes in the series, beginning with the first NVS Edition of Romeo and Juliet (1871). The CoDHR team has designed this project with three main goals: 1) to teach students and early career researchers the concepts behind variorum editing through interface design as well as tutorials; 2) to enable searching across and within volumes and variants using Modern English and major Act-Scene-Line numbers, returning not only exportable lists, text, and bibliographical citations, but also visualizations demonstrating everything from when characters speak in plays to the evolution of variant histories; and, in the final phase of the project, 3) to be interoperable with, and allow access to, other major Shakespeare digital resources including bibliographies of criticism, digital copies of editions published since Shakespeare's time, images, and videos. Following the practice of state-of-the-art digital humanities projects, we aim to render Shakespeare's texts and international criticism available world-wide.[1] To provide a little background, "The term variorum alludes to the Latin phrase editio cum notis variorum, that is, 'an edition with the notes of the various [editors and commentators],' a phrase indicating the chief purpose of a variorum edition: namely, to collect what has been written by various commentators, critics, and editors."[2] A Shakespeare variorum sets several editions of a play side by side in order to track sentence-, word-, and character-level changes. Each NVS volume comprises hundreds of pages, collates several editions, and takes editors decades--and very often a lifetime--to complete. These print editions also tend to be difficult to navigate for anyone who isn't a Shakespeare scholar or familiar with variorums. CoDHR's Digital NVS, however, organizes and presents variorums through an interface that is accessible, intuitive, and comprehensive. Unlike the print editions, this online application showcases all of the core components of a variorum at a glance: play text, commentary notes, and textual notes, making the content easier to understand. Additionally, new NVS editors will soon be able to use the web application's backend called Corpora to build editions, start to finish, using collation tools that will enable them to complete their work more quickly and accurately. What used to take editors years to complete can now be created through a single web application that allows for remote access and virtual collaboration. Having launched the site in Beta with the publication of The Winter's Tale and A Midsummer Night's Dream in July 2021, we are currently working on the next phases of the project as we move out of Beta: improving accessibility and usability; digitizing all NVS print editions from Romeo and Juliet (1871) to King Lear (2020); and assisting editors with creating born-digital NVS editions, using Corpora. We are also working on developing "a suite of research tools including an advanced search across multiple editions; visualizations of search results (such as a character-based frequency plot which will convey what characters most frequently use search terms in their speeches); the ability to sort and filter play lines, textual notes, and commentary in tabular format; and the ability to download raw versions of the data as JSON or TEI. We also hope to integrate external sources of information about a given play line or bibliographic entry."[3] It is our hope that the Digital NVS, which presents variorums in a new, more accessible way, will be an excellent resource not only for future NVS editors, but for readers, scholars, educators, and performers. The contribution highlights the importance of developing DH methods for large-scale investigation of depicted materials and surface qualities in medieval painting. Preliminary findings from our project, which is developing methods for AI-based recognition of materials in digitized paintings and evaluating their application to address art historical research questions, are presented.

Paleographical features can be extracted from digitized images by applying deep machine learning. This paper presents an unsupervised deep-learning method for determining script types and modes for medieval Hebrew manuscripts. The results would be presented vs. the previously published results of supervised deep learning for the same datasets.

The poster will introduce and share the first results of the Horizon Europe project MEMORISE, which creates a framework to preserve and enhance Heritage related to Nazi Persecution by virtualizing and linking multimodal data resources and by developing and offering novel digital technologies for accessing, exploring and engaging with HNP.

The poster presents a new software for semi-automatic stylometric analysis of poetry, especially Polish accentual-syllabic verse poetry. Starting from the versological and phonetic analysis of each verse, the program helps to establish the mood of a given poem based on the characteristic and number of phones constructing the text.

During the pandemic, the idea that digital adoption would revolutionise audience engagement became widespread in the museum sector. This paper explores whether this is true, utilising tools and debates from the digital humanities to analyse the online content and audiences of a representative sample of 315 museums in the UK.

This contribution deals with Dynamic Topic Modelling of Austrian historical newspapers (found in the ANNO Corpus), focusing on the time period from the 18th to the mid-20th Century. The aim of the investigation is to uncover the development of the topic surrounding migration from and via Southeast Europe to Austria.

We propose to leverage public vulnerability scanners to examine the servers where online digital projects are hosted and list their common vulnerabilities. Provided in an anonymized, aggregated fashion, this assessment will shed light on our hypothesis: cyber threats are a significant factor in the degradation of online projects.

We analyze changes in the business network of Interwar Yugoslavia using computational network analysis. We extract data from Compass, a yearly directory of directors in Central European companies. We combine qualitative and quantitative methods to give insight into the evolution of the Yugoslavian business in a significant historical context.

In this panel we offer a multifaceted and interdisciplinary perspective on the development of the Sloane Lab. We contextualise it both within a wider, nationally-funded drive to make the UK's cultural heritage, and information about it, computationally tractable and the more internationally-positioned work of 'Collections as Data'.

Our work considers how new advances in pretrained text-to-text generation models might make named entity recognition more accurate, flexible, and streamlined for the digital humanist. We provide an example of how text-to-text generative models can identify mentions of characters, authors, and book names within Goodreads book reviews.

Manu McFrench is a handwritten text recognition (HTR) model dedicated to French texts from the modern and contemporary periods. It was trained using data generated through the CREMMA infrastructure and/or shared via the HTR-United catalog. We demonstrate its usefulness to reduce the costs of training such models for specific handwritings.

This workshop will explore strategies for teaching visualization literacy - from sketching to creating visualizations using computational tools. Led by instructors from the humanities, visual analytics, design, and computer science, sessions will discuss different methodologies and challenges of teaching visualization to audiences with varied technical and disciplinary expertise and goals.

We present a modeling of document dates such that it can allow scholars to express uncertainty when annotating data, act as a differentiable loss function for training models and allow for unbiased interpretable performance evaluation under uncertainty.

Digital humanities is deeply collaborative and the importance of project planning in the field has grown due to work shifting to hybrid or remote environments. This paper aggregates project planning literature from the point of view of Centers for Digital Humanities (CDH) management to analyze key questions in project planning.

This paper presents a platform providing a digital census of copies of a limited number of printed editions and mapping their owners and readers' annotations represented in an RDF framework. Its ResearchSpace instance, magnetic-margins.com, provides interactive statistical analyses of the data that is encoded predominantly using CIDOC-CRM and FRBRoo.

Participants are invited to explore modelling and annotation through exercises demonstrating music research conducted in Oxford and Vienna. After hands-on ontology design exercises with pen and paper, they are introduced to cutting-edge digital tooling and led through research processes of an ongoing project investigating the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concerts.

Humanities textual data is full of references to persons and locations given in various languages. Researchers want to perform queries to retrieve data, in which a certain place or a person is mentioned, irrespective of the language of the text. In this paper, I present how we automatically extract named entities (geolocation information and person references) from textual data and homogenize and store them as Linked Open Data (LOD) with unique identifiers such as the GeoName ID and the GND (Gemeinsame Normdatei) number. Then the plain references in the text are substituted with standoff links to the corresponding RDF resources and the textual document is stored in RDF format. This enables humanities scholars to perform advanced SPARQL queries to collect textual resources containing specific references regardless of the language of the text. Furthermore, the relations between these named entities can be parsed from the text based on ontology definition, dependency graph of sentences, and POS tags to be added to the knowledge graph. Since the citability of the information is crucial for humanities research, this workflow adds the metadata regarding the source document of extracted information to the edges of the knowledge graph using RDF-star. This allows queries for documents containing a certain relationship between entities through SPARQL-star.

The poster introduces a new, challenging dataset in Hebrew and it seeks to extend automatic metaphor detection capabilities in pre-modern Hebrew. In the poster, we present the major literary characteristics of the corpus, the computational approaches and methods we use and our results.

This poster presents the preliminary results from the first author's PhD research project, consisting of the early steps towards customising Computer Vision (CV) to work with features characterising historical photographs from Ireland.

RDF formalisations are spreading and offer support for describing complex information such as provenance, contexts and uncertainty, while visualisation paradigms able to represent them efficiently are still lacking. This gap offers the opportunity to build onto the standard visualisations using non-representational approaches, user-centred design, and evaluation methodologies.

Our Heritage, Our Stories is a collaboration between the University of Glasgow, University of Manchester, and The National Archives, changing how digital content amongst UK communities is collected and curated. This poster outlines project goals, methods, and progress, and showcases new humanities research stories that it will make possible.

I use Singapore's own self-image of its sociopolitical trajectory since independence, as articulated recently by cabinet ministers as a dynamic balancing act between top-down strictures and bottom-up innovation, as a running metaphor/trope for a wide range of algorithms and methods with applications in Digital Humanities in my pedagogy at Singapore.

This paper describes the process of gathering, aggregating, harmonizing, and publishing epistolary metadata through collaboration with Finnish cultural heritage (CH) organizations in order to create an inclusive archive for bottom-up analyses of 19th-century epistolary culture in the Grand Duchy of Finland (1808/09-1917). The authors are working in the digital humanities consortium project Constellations of Correspondence (CoCo) [1]. The unified metadata collections are harmonized, linked, enriched, and published on a Linked Open Data (LOD) service, and as a semantic web portal. In Europe, there are several digital humanities projects using well-curated metadata (detailed information about senders, recipients, dates, and places) from edited letter collections - like CKCC [2], correspSearch [3, 4], the Early Modern Letters Online (EMLO) [5][6], Norkorr [7], and SKILLNET [8]. In our project, most of the data come from unpublished collections scattered around different Finnish CH organizations. Collaboration with these CH organizations is pivotal for the successful outcome of the project. It requires a dialogue with them throughout the whole project period in the form of seminars and site visits, as well as sharing blogs and newsletters, also after the organizations have provided their letter metadata. We have also already seen that some of the participating organizations are prepared to clean their metadata or catalogue previously uncatalogued archival material to provide better and more metadata for the project. We will discuss this two-way process using the Finnish National Gallery as a case study. An important challenge yet to be studied profoundly is, if and how the CoCo project will be able to deliver to the CH organizations their metadata in an enriched format. In the first phase of the project, we conducted a survey that was sent to over 100 CH organizations (extending from small local museums to official central archives). The paper describes how the information was collected and how the survey was constructed in order to provide us with detailed enough information regarding their 19th-century collections and metadata formats. At the same time, we had to keep the query succinct in order to make the answering as effortless as possible. As to the data processing, we began with more than 350 000 letters, from eight different sources, each in its own digital format. Although the received data is mostly structured, we needed to parse running text to retrieve metadata in nearly every collection. Moreover, we had to analyze each dataset and identify possible structural mistakes. Furthermore, some records required Natural Language Processing to get actor names (e.g. senders, recipients) in dictionary format. The most difficult task has been to process word files which contain correspondence metadata in a variety of formats, easily understandable to humans but difficult for computational processing. A harmonizing data model for epistolary metadata collections was developed, which builds on international standards like CIDOC CRM to promote interoperability. The most central classes are Letter, Place and Actor. Also, provenance and archival information are included. Finally, the actor data is enriched by linking it to external databases like Wikidata and the Finnish AcademySampo and BiographySampo. These external sources provide detailed biographical information, e.g., times and places of birth and death, name variations, occupations, or genealogical relationships. Information present in the letter metadata like actor names and times of sending and receiving is used for matching entities between our data and the external databases, and further to reconcile the actors between data sources. The workshop introduces participants to the use of Semantic Web Technologies and Linked Open Data in Digital Historical Studies with a special focus on Wikidata. These topics are highly relevant for knowledge representation in the Digital Humanities and especially important for collaborative processes of analyzing and sharing data.

A collaboration between the Linked Art II project and Participatory Knowledge Practices in Analogue and Digital Image Archives (PIA) has led to a reconfigurable Python-based workflow to transform cultural heritage data, initially photographic collections, into Linked Open Usable Data (LOUD), as a foundation for varied participatory interfaces supporting scholarship and beyond. Motivation PIA, led by the University of Basel and the Bern Academy of the Arts, aims to encourage participation from scholars and the wider public through three collections from the photographic archives of the Swiss Society for Folklore Studies (SSFS): The Atlas of Swiss Folklore, Ernst Brunner, and Kreis Family. PIA aims to create multiple interfaces reflecting diverse perspectives by deploying community-developed LOUD specifications such as the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) and Linked Art, an RDF application profile (JSON-LD) based on CIDOC-CRM to describe object-based cultural heritage. In collaboration with the University of Oxford via the Linked Art II project, PIA has transformed their cultural heritage collection data into Linked Art using templates, which encapsulate the data characteristics and cataloguing practices. A Linked Art API will provide an additional entry point, as a means of conveying semantically enriched events and as a benchmark against other collections leveraging this model. Python-based Workflow To generate Linked Art files for the combined PIA collection a data transformation workflow has been created through which PIA templates were encoded in Python for a given Linked Art API entity endpoint, currently: DigitalObject HumanMadeObject and Set. The workflow, described in a use case example with a photograph from the Ernst Brunner collection, provides a three-step software process for transforming data into Linked Art. Query: The first Python script extracts collection data from the (legacy) PIA JSON API. YAML front matters are used for script variables. The filepath for the relevant .yaml file is specified as a script argument throughout the workflow. For our example, the script queried data for all images looking for DigitalObject entities (one of the variables) and the object's metadata that are stored come specifically from https://json.participatory-archives.ch/api/v1/images/12033} Map: Templates are used to map collection data to an intermediate JSON data format. The intermediate JSON data format means that the later transformation script that creates Linked Art JSON-LD does not necessarily need to be modified if a new data source is introduced. Transform: The intermediate JSON data format is transformed to Linked Art with Python functions that define ‘patterns’ (for example classified_as) for representing different aspects of photographic collection data as Linked Art. Future Work The SSFS will migrate its database into the DaSCH Service Platform (DSP) and amend their data model which will affect PIA, requiring an upgrade of its infrastructure and APIs. The workflow for creating Linked Art representations will have to be reconfigured and repurposed with different data sources. After the migration of the SSFS database, the PIA team will investigate remaining issues in the GitHub repository regarding the correct mapping of Linked Art entities and attribution of IDs. The team will work to ensure that the appropriate Linked Art modelling is achieved through the workflow. Conclusion The reconfigurable Python-based workflow is able to transform cultural heritage data, initially photographic collections, into LOUD, as a foundation for varied participatory interfaces supporting scholarship and beyond. The adaptability and extensibility of the workflow allows for potential future transformations of data from other collections to Linked Art. In early modern Europe information circulated in the form of regular manuscript newsletters. However, most of the once existing news sheets did not survive. This study will present novel methods (random sampling with replacement, aka bootstrapping, and Bayesian statistics) to harness this lost corpus and to analyze its gender dimensions.

Extended methods of data processing and analysis could also be developed and applied in linguistics. In this paper we report on lexical and morpho-pragmatic analyzes of linguistic aspects related to the COVID-19 pandemic in two German corpora.
