The Sixteenth Eilat Conference on New Antiepileptic Drugs and Devices (EILAT XVI) was held in Madrid, Spain on May 22–25, 2022 and was attended by 157 delegates from 26 countries representing basic and clinical science, regulatory agencies, and pharmaceutical industries. One day of the conference was dedicated to sessions presenting and discussing investigational compounds under development for the treatment of seizures and epilepsy. The current progress report summarizes recent findings and current knowledge for seven of these compounds in more advanced clinical development for which either novel preclinical or patient data are available. These compounds include bumetanide and its derivatives, darigabat, ganaxolone, lorcaserin, soticlestat, STK‐001, and XEN1101. Of these, ganaxolone was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in March 2022 for the treatment of seizures associated with cyclin‐dependent kinase‐like 5 deficiency disorder in patients 2 years of age and older. The article presents information on the Third International Workshop on Comparative Survey Design and Implementation (CSDI), which was held in Madrid, Spain, from March 10-12, 2005. The main goals of the CSDI are to provide a forum and platform for researchers involved into methodological issues in cross-national and cross-cultural surveys and to promote cooperation on projects aimed at improving comparative research. The article discusses the failure of the Twelfth World Congress of Sociology in Madrid, Spain, from July 9-13, 1990. Even by the customary standards of the International Sociological Association, which are not high, the treatment received by participants was questionable. The housing arrangements had been entrusted to a private travel agency named Ibercolor. Foreign guests at the Congress were required to make hotel reservations several months in advance, with substantial deposits. Ibercolor received deposits from the majority of foreign guests but sent out no confirmations so that people had to stand in long, slow lines at the Congress headquarters to discover where one is supposed to stay. Many people found that they had been assigned to a hotel of a more expensive category than the one they had requested. They had no recourse since Ibercolor refused, to return deposits for any reason. Moreover, the special Congress rates arranged by Ibercolor turned out to be higher than the customary rates posted in each hotel room But the hotels refused to accept direct payment; guests were required to pay their hotel bills to Ibercolor, after another long wait in line.
