The parameter of tensile strength for transformer bushing insulating paper occupies an important position in the structural design and life evaluation of transformer bushing. In order to precisely achieve the effect of aging time and moisture content on the tensile strength of transformer bushing paper, transformer insulating paper samples with a thickness of 0.13 mm were prepared for tensile strength and dielectric strength testing under different moisture contents and aging states. The results show that the tensile strength (MPa) of insulating paper decreases linearly in the range of 0–648 h under accelerated thermal aging at 130 °C. However, there is a more serious exponential decline in the tensile strength (MPa) of insulation paper with its moisture content is boosted. The moisture content in insulation paper is the most important factor for insulation paper deterioration in oil-impregnated paper insulation equipment, which could accelerate the end of insulation service life. The value of capacitance increment ΔC of the insulation paper samples displayed closely linear growth with a moisture content from 0.5% to 5.9%. High voltage transformer is an essential electrical equipment that determine the reliability and continuity of power system. Basically, it consists of solid and liquid insulating materials. Kraft paper as solid insulation should have an ability to insulate the winding connection, while oil transformer, aside of its main function as an insulation, it is essential to provide cooling mechanism. This paper analyzes the accelerated thermal aging performance of kraft paper immersed in the natural ester from RBD palm oil by using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) characterization and thermogravimetric analysis. XRD characterization was used to determine the existence of crystalline structure in kraft paper. Crystalline structure in kraft paper is composed by cellulose. The toughness of kraft paper was determined by its amorphous region, lignin, that bind the cellulose and make them hard. The influence of thermal expansion was observed to discover the effect of thermal stress to the crystallinity of kraft paper. Besides, thermal degradation characteristics of kraft paper were examined by using thermogravimetric analysis. The sample was aged in 120°C and 150°C for two weeks. The stable operation of transformers is an important guarantee of power system security. The temperature distribution of main insulation is different in long‐term operation. The temperature difference between the local hottest spot temperature and the average oil temperature in the transformer exceeds 30 K. Therefore, the oil‐paper insulation inside the transformer will exhibit non‐uniform ageing after long‐term operation. At present, frequency domain dielectric response (FDS) technology is widely used in transformer ageing assessment. However, the existing assessment methods are only used for overall insulation ageing assessment. The average moisture content and polymerization degree of the overall insulation between each phase winding are obtained. But it still cannot be used to assess the non‐uniform ageing of the transformer's main insulation. The radial, axial, and two directions non‐uniform ageing models have been made in the laboratory in this study. The FDS and physicochemical properties of non‐uniform ageing models were tested. The variation law of FDS for non‐uniform ageing models was analysed. Meanwhile, the dielectric relaxation model of non‐uniform ageing for main insulation was established. The method of frequency division iterative calculation was proposed. Combined with the Fessler moisture balance formula of ageing oil‐paper insulation, the quantitative assessment method for ageing parameters of the non‐uniform ageing model can be realized. Compared the calculated results with the chemical analysis results, the relative error of the polymerization degree calculation is less than 4%, and the error of the moisture content calculation is less than 0.3%. The calculation results can meet the needs of the engineering apply. Therefore, this method can realize the quantitative assessment of transformer main insulation ageing, which is of great significance to assess the transformer insulation state. Methyl ester from vegetable oil has been considered a potential replacement for mineral oil used for power transformer cooling and insulating applications. However, some pertinent properties in making this liquid a better transformer oil based on the laydown standards need to be enhanced to maximize the use of this insulating liquid. Technology involving nano-modification can enhance the properties of these ester liquids placing them in a better position as a good alternative. In this study, we aim to investigate the performance of methyl ester liquid from neem seed oil, a non-food grade oil, when modified with SiO 2 insulating nanoparticles at several concentrations. Furthermore, Kraft paper compatibility has also been analyzed to observe their compatibility after impregnation. The breakdown strength, temperature-dependent dissipation loss factor, dielectric constant, and viscosity of both pure and nanofluid samples of neem ester liquid have been measured per standard methods. The nanofluid's dielectric performance has been significantly enhanced by the presence of SiO 2 nanoparticles according to results obtained from the experiment. For instance, the dielectric dissipation factor at an operating frequency of 60 Hz has been improved by 96%, 89%, and 79% at 30 °C, 50 °C, and 70 °C respectively relative to the base neem liquid. This remarkable improvement has been attributed to the SiO 2 nanoparticle's ability to polarize, trap, and de-trap mobile electrons develop in nanofluid when an electric field is applied. The accurate identification of the oil-paper insulation state of a transformer is crucial for most maintenance strategies. This paper presents a multi-feature comprehensive evaluation model based on combination weighting and an improved technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) method to perform an objective and scientific evaluation of the transformer oil-paper insulation state. Firstly, multiple aging features are extracted from the recovery voltage polarization spectrum and the extended Debye equivalent circuit owing to the limitations of using a single feature for evaluation. A standard evaluation index system is then established by using the collected time-domain dielectric spectrum data. Secondly, this study implements the per-unit value concept to integrate the dimension of the index matrix and calculates the objective weight by using the random forest algorithm. Furthermore, it combines the weighting model to overcome the drawbacks of the single weighting method by using the indicators and considering the subjective experience of experts and the random forest algorithm. Lastly, the enhanced TOPSIS approach is used to determine the insulation quality of an oil-paper transformer. A verification example demonstrates that the evaluation model developed in this study can efficiently and accurately diagnose the insulation status of transformers. The life expectancy of a transformer is closely related to the ageing state of its paper insulation. This paper presents novel markers for ageing characterization of paper insulation in oil-filled transformers based on the dispersion staining colors of cellulose fibres. Accelerated thermal ageing experiments were performed for oil-paper specimens at 120 and 130 °C to obtain aged oil-paper samples of different ageing degrees. The average degree of polymerization (DP), crystallinity index, and refractive index of insulation paper were measured; the experimental results show that an increase in refractive index of insulation paper was observed with the increase of ageing degree. Meanwhile, the dispersion staining colors of cellulose fibres in oil were observed using dispersion staining method; the experimental results show that the refractive index of cellulose fibres detached from insulation paper increases with the increment of ageing degree of insulation paper. Finally, two ageing markers—that is, the primary color ratio-based ratio of blue to red and the primary color ratio-based Mahalanobis distance were presented. Their relationship with DP and ageing time of insulation paper were obtained, and were compared with the corresponding relationship with 2-furaldehyde (2-FAL) and carbon oxides. The proposed ageing markers demonstrate an advantage over 2-FAL and carbon oxides and show potential in ageing state evaluation and residual life prediction of paper insulation in transformers. Mineral oil is widely used as liquid insulation in high voltage equipment. Due to environmental considerations, recently natural esters have been considered as naturally friendly liquid insulation candidates for high voltage transformers. In this experiment, transformer insulation paper was subjected to get accelerated aging test with copper strip in natural ester in a hermeneutical heat-resistant glass bottle at temperatures of 120 °C and 150 °C for 336 h, 672 h and 1008 h. The experimental results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) showed that the intensity of the absorbance peak of the O-H functional group decreased with aging, while the intensity of the C-H and C=O functional group absorbance peaks have increased with aging and the intensity of the C-O functional group absorbance peak has a tendency to increase with aging. The energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) experimental results showed that the weight percent of the element C increased with aging and the weight percent of the element O has decreased with aging. The experimental results show a good correlation between the degree of polymerization (DP) and the weight percent of O element. The application of vibration-based condition monitoring methods to power transformers has shown the potential for detecting mechanical transformer failures. The ageing of winding insulation paper, which is a common problem in long-serving power transformers, affects both the electrical and mechanical strength of the windings. This paper is concerned with the vibration features of winding disks with aged insulation paper. The vibration characteristics of single-layer winding disks wrapped with insulation paper are investigated. By examining the vibration frequency responses of winding disks with different degrees of ageing of insulation paper, the effects of aged paper on the vibration behaviors of winding disks are demonstrated. The experimental results show that changes in the vibration responses of winding disks can be related to the ageing of insulation paper, and thus it is possible to detect this failure mode in a power transformer using a vibration-based method. In the last decade, much effort has been invested in using methanol as an oil-soluble chemical marker for assessing the condition of insulating paper. The use of this marker as paper life index presents many advantages particularly with new transformers insulated with thermally upgraded papers. However, until now, no interpretation model has been available for its extensive use by the transformer community. In this paper, a methanol-based interpretation model is presented for the first time using postmortem paper analysis on core-type transformers. This model allows the evaluation of the average degree of polymerization of a transformer's cellulose winding. Furthermore, threshold values based on the methanol concentration are given using this approach. The main insulation system in high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transformer consists of oil-paper insulation. The formation of space charge in insulation paper is crucial for the dielectric strength. Unfortunately, space charge behavior changes because of the corrosive sulfur substance in oil. This paper presents the space charge behavior in insulation paper induced by copper sulfide generated by corrosive sulfur in insulation oil. Thermal aging tests of paper-wrapped copper strip called the pigtail model were conducted at 130 °C in laboratory. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe the surface of copper and paper. Pulse electroacoustic (PEA) and thermally stimulated current (TSC) methods were used to obtain the space charge behavior in paper. Results showed that both maximum and total amount of space charge increased for the insulation paper contaminated by semi-conductor chemical substance copper sulfide. The space charge decay rate of contaminated paper was significantly enhanced after the polarization voltage was removed. The TSC results revealed that copper sulfide increased the trap density and lowered the shallow trap energy levels. These results contributed to charge transportation by de-trapping and trapping processes. This improved charge transportation could be the main reason for the decreased breakdown voltage of paper insulation material. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is well established that copper sulfide is formed due to reaction of sulfur with copper conductors in transformers and reactors. However, there is very little experimental evidence to demonstrate copper sulfide diffusion into bulk of paper. Diffusion experiments have been carried out on three samples of kraft paper having different thickness. Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy has been used to investigate the possibilities of copper sulfide diffusion into bulk of paper. This study has demonstrated that copper sulfide can diffuse into the bulk of paper leading to either increase or decrease in free volume of paper. The reasons for changes in free volume of paper due to copper sulfide deposits are explained. The consequences of copper sulfide diffusion on PD, voltage-current characteristics under ac and volume resistivity are discussed. This paper explores the potential for a system to be a co-author on an academic paper based on the criteria proposed by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE). We used a third generation generative pretrained transformer (GPT-3) to write a review paper on the topic of its choice: The Effects of Sleep Deprivation on Cognitive Function. The system was asked to fulfill the four main criteria for co-authorship as recommended by ICMJE, which includes contributions to the conception or design of the work; drafting the work or revising it critically for important intellectual content; final approval of the version to be published; and agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work. Our results showed that the system was able to fulfill the criteria, with significant difficulties with accurate and reliable referencing. We also explored the ethical implications of using AI systems for research and found that it is important to take a cautious approach when considering its use for scientific authorship. High voltage transformer is one of the most important equipments in an electric power system. High voltage insulation plays important role in determining transformer performance and greatly determines the lifetime. In general, paper and oil composite is used as main insulations in a high voltage transformer. Due to thermal aging, the insulation performances of the insulation may be degraded. The degradation mechanisms are important to be clarified. This paper reports the experimental results on the effects of thermal aging on the properties of paper-oil composite insulation. The samples used were thermally upgraded kraft paper and mineral oil. They are widely used in high voltage transformers. Samples were conditioned to the same initial conditions through the heating at a temperature of 100 °C for 24 hours. Mineral oil samples with volume of 800 ml and 6 gram insulating kraft paper were put in hermetical bottles. The paper-oil ratio reflects the typical ratio of oil and kraft paper inside a real transformer. The bottles containing oil and paper samples were subjected to thermal aging at 120°C and 150°C in a controllable oven for a period up to 4 weeks. Dielectric properties of the oil such as breakdown voltage, resistivity, water content were measured after and before aging. Dissolved gas analysis (DGA) was used to identify the gasses released in the paper-oil composite insulation as the results of thermal aging process. The morphological aging of the kraft paper was investigated using SEM (scanning electron microscopy) while chemical element change was investigated using EDS (energy dispersive spectroscopy) with accelerated voltage of 0.3-30 kV. The results showed that the dielectric properties will decrease with the increasing duration and temperature of aging. From these experiments obtained CO gases, produced from thermal degradation of paper cellulose chain. H2 and C2H2 gases are not generated in this experiment. The result was consistent since H2 usually generated under partial discharges while C2H2 released under very high temperature such as partial combustion, electric arc which were not available in the experiment. Some hydrocarbon gas such as CH4, C2H4 and C2H6 were detected. CO gas was obtained as the result thermal aging of paper insulation through oxidation process. The EDS analysis showed that during aging the C element increased while O element decreased. EDS data of krafft paper aged at 120°C for a duration of 4 weeks (672 hours) taken using JEOL 6510 at accelerated voltage of 10 kV with energy range of 0-20 kV showed that the aged paper consists of 3 elements, C, O and K elements with mass percentage of 75.23 % of C at energy of 0.277 kV, O of 21.69 % observed at energy of 0.525 kV and new element of K with mass percentage of 3.08 observed at energy of 3.312 kV. It is clearly observed that C increased from 58.83 % to 75.23 %. This is due to the migration from the ester into the paper on the other hand oxygen reduced from 41.17 % to 21.69 % because the oxygen from the paper reacted with oil in an oxidation and release CO gas as confirmed by DGA (dissolved gas analysis). Furfural content in oil has been shown to be a powerful indicator of the deterioration of cellulose paper. The furfural content in oil may increase greatly when the moisture content increases in transformers. The increase of furfural content in oil can be attributed to various factors, such as aging of cellulose paper with the increase of moisture content and the difference in furfural production mechanism. In this research, thermal aging tests of oil-paper system with different moisture contents are conducted under laboratory conditions to determine the cause of such increase. Furfural content, both in insulation oil and in insulation paper, and the degree of polymerization values of insulation paper were regularly measured. Results show that the moisture content plays a significant role on the production of furfural, and the high initial moisture content in insulation paper leads to large amount of furfural produced when DP decreases to the same values. The difference in the moisture content apparently affects the distribution of furfural between oil and paper, and the increase in the moisture content in oil-paper system increases the diffusion of furfural from the insulation paper to the oil. The resistivity of oil impregnated paper will decrease during its aging process. This paper takes paper resistivity as an assessment index to evaluate the insulation condition of oil impregnated paper in power transformer. The feasibility of this method are discussed in two aspects: reliability and sensitivity. Iterative inversion of paper resistivity was combined with finite element simulation. Both the bisection method and Newton's method were used as iterative methods. After the analysis and comparison, Newton's method was selected as the first option of paper resistivity iteration for its faster convergence. In order to consider the spatial distribution characteristic of paper aging and enhance the calculation accuracy, the resistivity calculation is expanded to a multivariate iteration based on Newton's method, in order to consider the spatial distribution characteristic of paper aging and improve the calculation accuracy. This study investigated the influence of the main metal materials of transformers on the oil-paper insulation performance. Ten types of insulating specimens were subjected to accelerated thermal aging at 120°C. Some aging parameters, including oil acid number, furfural content and degree of polymerization (DP) of insulating paper, were measured and compared. At the same time, we conducted frequency domain spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometry on the insulating paper. The following conclusions were drawn: silicon lamination slightly deteriorates the insulating oil, copper increases the acidity and accelerates the production of furfural, metal materials can decrease DP of insulating paper and the effect of copper is greater than that of silicon lamination. During thermal aging, the dielectric dissipation factor of insulating paper increases and the carbon content of insulating paper increases. Metal materials can significantly increase the dielectric dissipation factor and carbon content of insulating paper and the effect of copper is greater than that of silicon lamination. Measurement of transformer remaining useful life has long been a goal for responsible asset management. Most testing laboratories offer furan concentration testing as a suitable method. The interpretive method of choice is usually the Chendong equation, expressed in practical terms as degree of polymerization of the paper with new paper at about 1000 and end of life at around 300. Typical mill transformers have thermal insulation ratings expressed as 55 °C rise for plain kraft or 65 °C, which corresponds to thermally upgraded kraft paper (TUP). It has been determined that TUP does not produce furans and, thus, provides a false indicator of the cellulose breakdown. There are several recent papers that have demonstrated that a measurement of methanol (MeOH) may be a better method to determine ageing of the TUP insulation and also better for transformers with plain kraft paper insulation.
