The micromixing time of impinging thin liquid sheets depends upon the energy dissipation rate (∊). The kinetic energy released by the impingement has been previously studied and was found to be a function of the coefficient of restitution of the collision. In this work, the volume within which the released kinetic energy is dissipated was investigated. The volume of energy dissipation was determined by measuring the time required for the velocity of the liquid prior to the collision to be reduced to the velocity after the collision. High-speed video was used to measure the velocity of features, generated in the front single sheet, as they passed through the impingement zone and into the mixed sheet. The experimental results showed that the time required for the velocity change was approximately equal to the residence time of liquid in the impingement zone (t r). A new equation for ∊ was developed and compared with ∊ derived from turbulence energy-cascade theory. This comparison showed that the large-eddy turnover time (t Λ) was approximately equal to t r ; a result that is in accordance with the notion from turbulence energy-cascade theory that large, energy-containing eddies lose their energy within t Λ. Experiments of a steel sphere oblique impact with a rubber cushion have been proceeded to research the variation laws of the specific energy at interface. The contact surfaces above and under the rubber cushion can be recorded with a thin carbon paper. The parameters of deformation volume and specific energy are analyzed by the developed formulas in different cases of the impact angle, cushion thickness, drop height and sphere diameter. It is found that the deformation volume and related geometrical sizes decrease approximately exponentially with the impact angle, and the volume of the tangential moving part reaches a maximum at 50° or 60°. The variation laws of the specific energy absorption/dissipation in normal are similar to that of the axis length. The tangential specific energy can be divided into three main phases, the first two appear the states of slow increase and plateau, between of them a fluctuating peak exists at 30–40°. In final phase, the energy absorption shows sharp increase, but the energy dissipation first increases and then decreases. In addition, they increase linearly with the drop height and sphere diameter, and an optimum cushion thickness of 4 or 5 mm in the given cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Flexible graphene-based paper is promising for wide applications due to its outstanding electrical and thermal conductivities. Graphene flakes with large size are usually known as the key factor for improved paper performance. However, we find that a combination of flakes with large and small sizes is more favorable for both electrical and thermal conductivities than pure large flakes. In this work, flexible paper with enhanced electrical and thermal properties was fabricated by mixing graphene flakes with various size distributions. Large-size graphene (LSG) flakes play the role of a backbone structure, whereas small-size graphene (SSG) flakes fill the voids in the paper without disturbing the high orientation. The physical properties of the as-prepared graphene papers with contents of SSG varying from 0 to 100% have been investigated. It is found that the electrical and thermal conductivities of the paper with 25 wt% SSG are both around 140% higher than that of pure LSG paper. Our results indicate that the lightweight and flexible graphene-based paper has great potential for lateral heat dissipation applications requiring heat movement in a particular direction. This work investigates the effect of alternating current partial discharge (AC PD) byproducts on the dielectric frequency response (DFR) of oil-paper insulation comprising of a small cavity, in the frequency range of 1.0 mHz to 1.0 kHz. The investigations were done by utilizing experimental results in combination with a Finite Element Method (FEM) model. The results presented in this paper show that ageing by-products in the cavity (PD stressed volume) alone will not result into the change in DFR of oil-paper insulation. According to simulation results, the significant change in the DFR results is mainly caused by PD by-products (positive and negative charges, and electrons) which tend to conduct or diffuse into the bulk of oil-paper insulation. The change in a dissipation factor curve due to PD by-products was observed to occur mainly in the middle and low frequency regions. The results indicate that the dissipation factor curves in the middle and low frequency regions depend on the level of PD by-products in oil and paper, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Objectives: In this paper, a novel structure as a Folded-Mirror (FM) Trans-impedance Amplifier (TIA) is designed and introduced for the first time based on the combination of the current-mirror and the folded-cascade topologies. The trans-impedance amplifier stage is the most critical building block in a receiver system. This novel proposed topology is based on the combination of the current mirror topology and the folded-cascade topology, which is designed using active elements. The idea is to use a current mirror topology at the input node. In the proposed circuit, unlike many other reported designs, the signal current (and not the voltage) is being amplified till it reaches the output node. The proposed TIA benefits from a low input resistance, due to the use of a diode-connected transistor, as part of the current mirror topology, which helps to isolate the dominant input capacitance. So, as a result, the data rate of 5Gbps is obtained by consuming considerably low power. Also, the designed circuit employs only six active elements, which yields a small occupied chip area, while providing 40.6dBΩ of trans-impedance gain, 3.55GHz frequency bandwidth, and 664nArms input-referred noise by consuming only 315µW power using a 1V supply. Results justify the proper performance of the proposed circuit structure as a low-power TIA stage. Methods: The proposed topology is based on the combination of the current mirror topology and the folded-cascade topology. The circuit performance of the proposed folded-mirror TIA is simulated using 90nm CMOS technology parameters in the Hspice software. Furthermore, the Monte-Carlo analysis over the size of widths and lengths of the transistors is performed for 200runs, to analyze the fabrication process. Results: The proposed FM TIA circuit provides 40.6dBΩ trans-impedance gain and 3.55GHz frequency bandwidth, while, consuming only 315µW power using a 1V supply. Besides, as analyzing the quality of the output signal in the receiver circuits for communication applications is vital, the eye-diagram of the proposed FM TIA for a 50µA input signal is opened about 5mV, while, for a 100µA input signal the eye is opened vertically about 10mV. So, the vertical and horizontal opening of the eye is clearly shown. Furthermore, Monte-Carlo analysis over the trans-impedance gain represents a normal distribution with the mean value of 40.6dBΩ and standard deviation of 0.4dBΩ. Also, the value of the input resistance of the FM TIA is equal to 84.4Ω at low frequencies and reaches the value of 75Ω at -3dB frequency. The analysis of the effect of the feedback network on the value of the input resistance demonstrates the input resistance in the absence of the feedback network reaches up to 1.4MΩ, which yields the importance of the existence of the feedback network to obtain a broadband system. Conclusion: In this paper, a trans-impedance amplifier based on a combination of the current-mirror topology and the folded-cascade topology is presented, which amplifies the current signal and converts it to the voltage at the output node. Due to the existence of a diode-connected transistor at the input node, the input resistance of the TIA is comparatively small. Furthermore, four out of six transistors are PMOS transistors, which represent less thermal noise in comparison with NMOS transistors. Also, the proposed Folded-Mirror topology occupies a relatively small area on-chip, due to the fact that no passive element is used in the feedforward network. Accumulation of interfacial space charge in oil-paper interface is a critical issue in insulation diagnostics of transformers. This interfacial charge mainly accumulates due to the conductivity difference of oil and paper. Accumulation of interfacial charge leads to localized field enhancement, which further leads to partial discharges and acceleration in the aging of insulation. Therefore, from the point of view of transformer insulation diagnostics, assessment of interfacial charge is very important. However, it is not easy to estimate interfacial space charge behavior from the transformer diagnostics methods currently in use. In case of Polarization-Depolarization Current (PDC) measurement, a well known method for transformer condition monitoring, the effect of interfacial charge is reflected in the non-linearity of current response during polarization and de-polarization. During de-polarization process, a part of the interfacial charge accumulated during polarization period is absorbed by the electrodes producing a current, which is difficult to separate using conventional linear dielectric theory. In this paper, an attempt has been made to separate this current component from de-polarization current through considering charge de-trapping mechanism. Terming this current component as de-trapping current, its relationship with other parameters of transformer insulation is discussed. The developed methodology has been applied on several practical transformers. High voltage transformers play a very important role in the electric power system. One of the most important parts of electric power equipment is the insulation system. Insulation system must be in a good condition for reliable and safe operation of electrical devices. Insulation system of electrical equipment is exposed to various factors which could have negative influence on its condition. Oil impregnated insulation paper is one of the oldest insulation systems used in electrical power equipment. Mineral oils have been used for decades as transformer fluids because of their excellent dielectric properties and availability. However, performance of mineral oil starts to be limited due to environmental consideration. Polarisation and depolarisation current (PDC) measurement and analysis is one of the popular tools for effective diagnosis of power transformer insulation. Normally, it is assumed that polarisation current is the combination of the current due to dipole movement and conduction current. Similarly, the depolarisation current is only due to the relaxation of dipoles. However, it is found that after eliminating the effect of dc conduction from polarisation current the resulting current is not similar to that of measured depolarisation current. This shows some non-linearity is present in the system. This non-linearity occurs due to movement of trapped charge that resides in the interfacial region of oil--paper insulation. This study shows the effect of detrapping charge on various performance parameters that are used for insulation diagnosis like paper moisture and dielectric dissipation factor (tanδ). Frequency Domain Spectroscopy (FDS) is proposed as a suitable diagnostic method in this paper for implementation on energized oil-paper insulation systems. In present FDS tests, the measurement method is only designed for offline applications. To overcome the deficiencies with the offline testing, this work investigates the feasibility of performing FDS measurements on energized transformers with the view to developing an online diagnostic tool using neutral connections as injection and measurement paths. In the proposed technique, a low-pass filter system is designed to remove the high frequency noise as well as the power frequency signals present in the measured neutral currents. The technique has been successfully applied in a laboratory environment on transformers with oil-paper insulation systems with different operational ages and is feasible for single-phase as well as 3-phase transformers with the accessible neutral points. Compared with the conventional FDS results, a nonlinear dielectric phenomenon is observed from the energized insulation systems as higher dissipation factor Tan5 values primarily due to the increased losses under power frequency voltage excitation. Frequency Domain Spectroscopy is a popular non-invasive method that is widely used for condition assessment of oil-paper insulation in real-life power transformers. Conventional Frequency Domain Spectroscopy is done using sinusoidal excitation over a wide frequency range. In this work, a different approach has been taken to investigate some more possibilities of Frequency Domain Spectroscopy using non-sinusoidal excitation for a better condition assessment of oil-paper insulation. For that, triangular waveshape was chosen as non-sinusoidal excitations whose slope can be changed to vary the harmonic content and amplitudes of constituent components. Samples with preset moisture contents that emulate the oil-paper insulation of real-life transformer have been prepared in the laboratory for the assessment of insulation condition. For a comparative study, both sinusoidal and triangular excitations having same peak as well as time period are applied to the prepared samples under controlled environmental condition and corresponding dielectric response currents are measured. From the applied voltages and corresponding dielectric response currents, dielectric dissipation factors are calculated and compared. It has been observed that use of nonsinusoidal excitation provides better results than sinusoidal excitation in the estimation of paper moisture content. Semi interlocking masonry (SIM) is an innovative masonry building system which is being developed in the Centre for Infrastructure Performance and Reliability at The University of Newcastle, Australia. It utilizes a special method of interlocking of mortar-less engineered masonry panels made of semi-interlocking masonry (SIM) units which possess significant energy dissipation capacity due to friction on sliding bed joints between units of the panel during a seismic event. This special method of interlocking SIM bricks allows relative sliding of unit courses in-plane of a wall and prevents out-of-plane relative movement of units. Because all bed joints in a SIM panel are sliding joints, SIM panels can withstand large in-plane displacements without damage. To test SIM panels, a special steel frame with pin connections at each corner was designed and built. The arrangement with pin connections allows application of in-plane shear distortion to the panel of up to 120 mm. The study presented herein focused on the experimental investigation of displacement capacities of three different types of panels (panel with open gap between the steel frame and top of the panel, panel with foam in the gap, panel with grout in the gap) with two types of SIM units. The paper expands significantly from the previously published conference paper and examines the behavior of SIM panels subject to 100 mm (5% storey drift) cyclic in-plane lateral displacement on six SIM panels. The horizontal and vertical movement of SIM units were recorded using Digital Image Correlation (DIC) every 10 s over approximately 8 h of testing. This study reveals that the DIC displacement outputs show good agreement with displacements measured using traditional instrumentation, even at large displacements (up to 100 mm). The structural performance of the SIM panels is also analyzed and potential joint opening widths are quantified under large displacement by plotting the outputs from DIC results. Abstract: This work is concerned with the adhesion strength between a paper web and a metal roll surface, which is a common situation in paper machines world-wide. It is shown that the classic expression relating the work of adhesion to the peeling angle and web tension is, in general, insufficient. An improved model is suggested to take into account the energy dissipation due to elastic–plastic deformation behavior of wet paper materials. To judge the model, an industrially relevant example of wet newsprint and a mild steel surface is studied. It is found that the agreement between theory and experimental observations is excellent. In order to distinguish the influences of moisture and aging on the frequency domain dielectric response of oil-paper insulation and better apply frequency domain spectroscopy (FDS) to assess the insulation condition of power transformers, the oil-paper insulation samples with different moisture contents and different aging states were prepared in the laboratory. The FDS of the samples were tested and a group of characteristic parameters were extracted from dissipation factor (tan?) curves which could be used to assess the moisture content and aging states of oil-paper insulation respectively. The quantitative relationship among characteristic parameters, degree of polymerization (DP) and moisture contents (Km.c) was accurately established. The observations show that the proposed characteristic parameters are sensitive to the moisture in 10-3-102Hz, while the aging states influence the characteristic parameters in 10-3-10-1Hz. Meanwhile, an exponential relationship equation which could be used to assess the oil-paper insulation condition was established among the characteristic parameters, DP and the moisture content. Finally, the evaluation technique proposed in this paper was used to diagnose the insulation condition of several field transformers in this way, and its validity was preliminary and reasonably verified. In order to complete the broadband simulation model of power transformer, and establish a systematic and complete model for studying fast transient interaction between transformer and power system, the frequency dependent characteristics of dielectric losses in power transformer were investigated. Several typical insulation structures in power transformers were considered and measuring techniques determined to study the dielectric losses. Frequency dependent dielectric losses in the range of 10-107 Hz were measured by a dielectric spectroscopy analyzer produced by Novocontrol. The characteristics of insulating papers and pressboard measured in the air and after immersing in the mineral oil were compared. Based on the dielectric relaxation theory, the number of dielectric relaxation was determined according to the measured data, and four typical model functions were adopted to fit the data and the consistency of fitting by these functions were compared and physical explanations of fitting parameters were described. With the development of modern fluid machinery, the energy density of pumps is gradually being improved, and at the same time, higher demands are being placed on the cavitation performance, hence the introduction of the inducer and centrifugal impeller to form a dynamic–dynamic series structure. However, there are strict constraints on the axial size of pumps in fields such as firefighting and aerospace. The traditional empirical formula no longer satisfies the need to fit the axial dimensions between the induced wheel and the impeller at high velocities. Therefore, based on the wave-piercing theory, the drag reduction coefficient is introduced to explore the optimal axial fit size from the perspective of energy characteristics. This paper focuses on the influence of the inducer's wake on the energy characteristics of downstream impellers, and conducts the following research: by adjusting the axial matching dimensions between the upstream inducer and the centrifugal impeller in the initial model, ten sets of axial distance models with matching dimensions of KD are designed, and the drag reduction coefficient is embedded to determine the optimal axial distance. The results show that the optimal axial distance is 0.2D, which is far lower than the axial distance value of 0.42D obtained from the traditional empirical formula for axial matching dimensions. Meanwhile, this paper uses tangential velocity, the inlet flow angle of the impeller, entropy production theory, and other indicators to analyze the internal energy loss of the high-speed vehicular fire pumps one by one. All of them confirm that the impeller in the high-speed vehicular fire pump has the lowest energy loss and optimal performance at an axial distance of 0.2D. Specifically, at this axial distance, the head can reach 259 m, and the hydraulic efficiency is as high as 83.62%. Thus, the feasibility of determining the axial placement of the impeller using the drag coefficient is validated. With the development of smart grids and new power systems, the combination of non-intrusive load identification technology and smart home technology can provide users with the operating conditions of home appliances and equipment, thus reducing home energy loss and improving users' ability to demand a response. This paper proposes a non-intrusive load decomposition model with a parallel multiscale attention mechanism (PMAM). The model can extract both local and global feature information and fuse it through a parallel multiscale network. This improves the attention mechanism's ability to capture feature information over long time periods. To validate the model's decomposition ability, we combined the PMAM model with four benchmark models: the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) recurrent neural network model, the Time Pooling-based Load Disaggregation Model (TPNILM), the Extreme Learning Machine (ELM), and the Load Disaggregation Model without Parallel Multi-scalar Attention Mechanisms (UNPMAM). The model was trained on the publicly available UK-DALE dataset and tested. The models' test results were quantitatively evaluated using a confusion matrix. This involved calculating the F1 score of the load decomposition. A higher F1 score indicates better model decomposition performance. The results indicate that the PMAM model proposed in this paper maintains an F1 score above 0.9 for the decomposition of three types of electrical equipment under the same household user, which is 3% higher than that of the other benchmark models on average. In the cross-household test, the PMAM also demonstrated a better decomposition ability, with the F1 score maintained above 0.85, and the mean absolute error (MAE) decreased by 5.3% on average compared with that of the UNPMAM. Energy saving is an important measure to promote social green transformation. The traditional energy-saving ideas usually only focus on a specific loss, and seldom consider the possible relationship and influence among various losses. In relatively complex energy-using systems, there are often many kinds of losses, and each loss may have many influencing factors. There may be some relationship between these losses and the influencing factors. To solve this problem, this paper presents an analysis method of the variable association in multi-variable systems. First, the basic relationships between variables and the representation methods are discussed. The basic concept of a path between variables is given, and the analysis method of variable association based on path statistics is provided. This paper focuses on the analysis of the influencing factors and paths of the observed variables, as well as which observed variables will be affected by a control variable. Then, based on the correlation matrix, the quantitative analysis method of the influence between variables is given. Variable correlation analysis is innovatively applied in the field of energy saving to determine the correlation of losses through variable associations, guiding the preliminary screening of energy-saving measures and analyzing the collateral effects of these measures. Based on the correlations between energy losses, a scientific process for formulating energy-saving measures is proposed. The variable correlation analysis method proposed in this paper is a generalized method, which can judge the correlation between variables from the perspective of theoretical analysis and avoid the dependence on data. Recently, a new type of lighting source, deep ultraviolet light-emitting diode (LED), has appeared in the markets of space purification and surface sterilization. In this paper, a new type of electronic lighting driver for supplying a deep-ultraviolet LED sterilization lamp is proposed and developed. The main circuit combines a buck converter and a flyback converter into a single-stage single-switch buck-flyback AC-DC power converter with power factor correction. In addition, the proposed electronic lighting driver leverages a wide bandgap SiC Schottky diode as the output diode to lower the power diode losses and recycles the energy stored in the leakage inductance of the transformer in order to improve the circuit efficiency. The magnetizing inductor inside the presented AC-DC power converter is designed to operate in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM), which naturally enables power factor correction (PFC). A single-stage prototype driver with a power rating of 3.6 W (90 V/40 mA) was developed and implemented for providing a deep ultraviolet LED disinfection and sterilization lamp. Experimental results show that the measured power factor (PF) is greater than 0.9 and the measured total harmonic distortion (THD) of the input current is less than 18% at an input utility voltage of 110 V. Furthermore, the measured output voltage ripple factor is less than 1% and the output current ripple factor is less than 4%. In addition, the proposed single-stage electronic lighting driver for supplying a deep ultraviolet LED disinfection and sterilization lamp achieves high circuit efficiency (greater than 90%), low circuit component count, and low circuit cost. In the field of handling, storage and transportation, chutes are used to transfer bulk solids between conveyors and warehouses. In these systems, traditional analytical methods based on the principles of continuum mechanics approximate an accelerated flow that contains the physical body solid properties obtained from standardized tests. Because it is difficult to physically observe the flow inside the transfer structure, there have been few studies to validate the method at full scale. In contrast, discrete element modeling (DEM) allows flow visualization through a transfer chute and qualitative and quantitative analysis if accurate simulation parameters are selected. In order to adapt to the needs of modern intelligent warehousing, we reduced the grain crushing and damage in the process of grain storage. To design and investigate the motion performance of grain particles in a sliding dustpan, this paper utilizes rocky simulation technology, combined with the corresponding bench experiments, to study the impact of the angle arrangement of the dustpan, and to verify the results of the simulation analysis based on the stress–strain analysis of the particle impact. It was found that when the angle of the dustpan arrangement was 40 degrees, the flow of all particles had a better performance in terms of pass ability and energy loss. In the continuous cycle obtained from the simulation, the particle group state at each moment is almost the same as the particle characteristics in the experiment, indicating that the angle of the bucket has an effect on the particle permeability. Bolted joints play a more and more important role in the structure with lighter weight and heavier load. This paper aims to provide an overview of different experimental approaches for the dynamic behavior of structures in the presence of bolted joints, especially the energy dissipation or damping at frictional interfaces. The comprehension of energy dissipation mechanisms due to friction is provided first, while the key parameters and the measurement techniques, such as the excitation force, the preload of the bolt, or the pressure at the interfaces, are briefly introduced. Secondly, the round-robin systems aim to measure the hysteresis parameters of the frictional joints under tangential loads are reviewed, summarizing the basic theory and the strategies to apply the excitation force or acquire the response in different testing systems. Followed by parameter identification strategies for bolted structures, the test rigs with one or more simplified bolted joints are summarized to give an insight into the understanding of typical characteristics of bolted structures, which are affected by the presence of friction. More complex test rigs hosting real-like or actual engineering structures with bolted lap or flange joints are also introduced to show the identification process of the dynamic characteristics of bolted connections employed in specific applications. Based on the review paper, researchers can get the basic knowledge about the experimental systems of the bolted structures, especially several classical round robin systems, such as the Gaul resonator and widely used Brake-Reuß beam system. This research paper introduces an optimization methodology for the strategic electric sources' placement at multiple positions in a DC islanded microgrid characterized by a mesh network, aiming to minimize line losses while considering minimal cable weight. The DC microgrid studied in this paper is composed of PV panels, batteries, a diesel generator, and 20 residential loads. Employing Dijkstra's algorithm, a graph algorithm used in Google Maps, the study identifies the shortest path (resistance) between potential source nodes and various variable loads within a predefined electric distribution mesh network topology. In Europe, it is estimated that 14% of existing buildings were built before 1919, whereas 26% were built before 1945. In Romania, about 31% of the buildings date from before 1961, contributing to the current stock of old buildings with historic and architectural value in the country. This paper illustrates the current state of buildings with historic and architectural value in Romania, alongside a case study of a representative administrative building in Câmpulung, Romania. The analysis of the Town Hall building in Câmpulung, Romania, demonstrates that potential energy savings of up to 47.53% can be achieved by implementing interventions such as upgrading windows, insulating the attic, and installing photovoltaic panels. The highest energy reduction is obtained by replacing the window glass with a value of 18.16% with attic insulation with a value of 16.1%. This paper also presents indoor measurements of temperature and humidity in different offices positioned in the north and the south. The study conducted on the south façade office revealed consistent temperatures ranging from 21.7 °C to 24.4 °C, with an average of 23.31 °C. However, the humidity levels fluctuated considerably, ranging from 17.1% to 39.1%, with an average of 26.89%. The sun-exposed section of the building saw relatively stable temperature conditions, but the varying humidity levels could have a detrimental impact on the quality of the indoor atmosphere and potentially decrease the effectiveness of the workforce. By contrast, the north façade office exhibited lower and more fluctuating temperatures, ranging from 19.8 °C to 23.6 °C, with an average of 21.74 °C. Additionally, it had higher and more stable humidity levels, ranging between 19.5% and 41.7%, with an average of 29.83%. A thermographic analysis was performed on the north façade of the Câmpulung Town Hall, utilizing thermal imaging technology to detect areas of heat loss, and thus identifying the energy inefficiency problems of the building's exterior. The investigation found notable variations in temperature, especially around the windows, where temperatures could be as high as 14.1 °C, highlighting the insufficiency of the building's antiquated timber-framed windows in preventing energy loss. Due to its simplicity, the one-diode model is commonly used for modeling the operation of photovoltaic (PV) modules at standard test conditions (STC). However, its inherent implicit nature often presents challenges in modeling PV energy production. In this paper, the innovative explicit one-diode model developed by us over time is adapted for estimating PV power production under real weather conditions. Simple yet accurate equations for calculating the energy output of a PV generator equipped with a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) system are proposed. The model's performance is assessed under various normal and harsh operating conditions against measured data collected from the experimental setup located at the Solar Platform at West University of Timisoara, Romania. As an application of the new equation for maximum power, this paper presents a case study where the energy loss in the absence of an MPPT system is evaluated based on atmospheric and sky conditions. The work in this paper is applied to the Zhangbei Power grid. In the flexible direct current (DC) power system, the fault current rises extremely fast when a DC fault occurs. The requirements for the peak of breaking current and fault energy absorption of DC circuit breakers (DCCBs) increase linearly, which significantly increases the cost of the equipment. Therefore, in order to reduce the design difficulty of DCCBs, this paper proposes a strategy to control energy after the fault occurs. Firstly, the energy dimension is added on the basis of the traditional vector control of MMC, which constitutes a three-dimensional energy direct control. Subsequently, the architectures of energy fluctuation control and feedforward control are proposed. The influencing mechanisms for the peak fault current, peak fault voltage and energy dissipation are analyzed. Finally, the simulation of energy fluctuation control and feedforward control is constructed on PSCAD/EMTDC. The simulation results show that the energy fluctuation control is obviously better than the conventional three-dimensional energy control, and the feedforward energy control is further improved on this basis. Compared with the conventional vector control, the peak energy is reduced by 45.43% and the peak current is reduced by 25.39%, which helps to simplify the equipment design and reduce the equipment cost. This paper presents an energy-saving and lifetime-maximizing solution for the LoRa wireless mesh network (WMN). Energy dissipation is a crucial factor affecting the usability of the LoRa WMN. In the worst cases, in systems without electric mains, the life of a sensor node battery may last for only a few hours. Two proposed solutions are characterized as energy-saving due to the use of deep sleep in the ESP8266-12F microcontroller. This allows the optimization of duty cycling, which refers to the ratio between active and inactive periods of sensor nodes power-gating the node, i.e. turning off all circuitries. This solution benefits applications using active power-hungry sensors sampled many times daily. Notably, reducing power consumption during idle time increases the optimal battery life by up to hundreds of times. As a result, the automatic uptime of a LoRa WMN can increase from days to months or even years, depending on usage. Therefore, energy-saving must be optimized if the node is to be installed in locations without a grid or renewable energy source. Aiming at the problem of excessive vertical vibration caused by seismic primary waves in jacket structures located in seismic zones in China, a new type of shear plate metal damper with upper and lower elliptical openings (SPA) is proposed in this paper. The seismic model test is carried out to compare the shear plate metal damper with three traditional opening forms, central elliptical opening, single row opening, and double row opening, and the hysteretic curve, skeleton curve, and cyclic hysteretic energy dissipation capacity are analyzed. The results show that the energy dissipation performance of the new shear plate metal damper with upper and lower elliptical openings proposed in this paper is better than that of the other three types of dampers. In the process of logistics, shock and vibration are the most important factors contributing to product damage. Assembling honeycomb paperboard and EPE is commonly used to provide cushioning and anti-vibration effects to materials. Therefore, it is necessary to study the vibration transmission properties of this kind of assembly in the anti-vibration process. The aim of this paper was to experimentally determine the vibration transmission properties of assemblies with honeycomb paperboard and expanded polyethylene (EPE). Through a sinusoidal sweep vibration test of this assembly, the vibration transmission characteristic curves of assemblies with honeycomb paperboard and EPE of different thicknesses were obtained and compared. Assuming the assembly and mass block as a single degree of freedom with a small damping linear system, the damping energy dissipation of the assembly and the resonance frequency were obtained. The vibration transmission property curves of the assembly can be divided into four regions. With an excitation acceleration of 0.5 g and a honeycomb paperboard with a thickness of 60 mm (F60), the vibration transmission rate and the resonance frequency—of the material dampened with EPE at a thickness of 60 mm (E60), and the assembly (F30/E30) with a 30 mm thick honeycomb paperboard and 30 mm thick EPE—increased by −2.5% and −17.5%, −86.9% and 79.3%, and −95.9% and −85.7%, respectively. Compared to the assembly with 20 mm thick honeycomb and 20 mm thick EPE (F20/E20), the vibration transmission rate, the resonance frequency, and the material damping and damping energy dissipation of F40/E20, F30/E30, and F20/E40 increased by 75.6%, 48.3%, and 66.1%; 1.2%, −21.5%, and −38.9%; 241.5%, 82.8%, and 13.3%; and 12.5%, 98.9%, and 106.8%, respectively. Compared to F60 and E60, the damping energy dissipation of F30/E30 increased by 2816.7% and 133.3%, respectively. The assembly of F30/E30 has the smallest vibration transmission rate and the most vibration energy dissipation among these assemblies. This means that the assembly of F30/E30 absorbs the most external vibration energy, while the acceleration that is transmitted to the internal product is minimal. Therefore, in the design of cushioning packaging, according to the characteristics and natural frequency of the internal products, an appropriate assembly can be selected, which should have a lower vibration transmission rate and more vibration energy dissipation, and should not resonate with the internal product. Recently, we published two papers in this journal. One of the papers dealt with the action of the radiation fields generated by a traveling-wave element and the other dealt with the momentum transferred by the same radiation fields and their connection to the time energy uncertainty principle. The traveling-wave element is defined as a conductor through which a current pulse propagates with the speed of light in free space from one end of the conductor to the other without attenuation. The goal of this letter is to combine the information provided in these two papers together and make conclusive statements concerning the connection between the energy dissipated by the radiation fields, the time energy uncertainty principle and the elementary charge. As we will show here, the results presented in these two papers, when combined together, show that the time energy uncertainty principle can be applied to the classical radiation emitted by a traveling-wave element and it results in the prediction that the smallest charge associated with the current that can be detected using radiated energy as a vehicle is on the order of the elementary charge. Based on the results, an expression for the fine structure constant is obtained. This is the first time that an order of magnitude estimation of the elementary charge based on electromagnetic radiation fields is obtained. Even though the results obtained in this paper have to be considered as order of magnitude estimations, a strict interpretation of the derived equations shows that the fine structure constant or the elementary charge may change as the size or the age of the universe increases. The aim of this study was to verify the criteria for selecting pleated filter partitions used in passenger car engine filters. The paper presents the problem of optimizing pleated air filters in the direction of minimizing pressure drop, which is the source of engine energy losses. Two criteria for selection of a paper filter partition for specific operating conditions of the filter and the engine are presented: criterion of permissible separation speed and criterion of permissible pressure drop. The actual filtration area of 44 paper pleated filter elements used in passenger cars and the air stream flowing through the filter were determined, which made it possible to calculate separation speed. In 62% of the analyzed filter inserts, the calculated separation speeds are within the speed range recommended by the constructors, uFmax = 0.06-0.12 m/s. Exceeding permissible separation speed uFmax = 0.12 m/s was found mainly in supercharged engines. Negative effects of engine operation with an air filter with too small separation area are presented, in the form of increased pressure drop and energy loss of the engine as well as shorter car mileage to reach permissible pressure drop. This paper aims at investigating the triaxial behavior of Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) under extremely high pressures, and experimentally determine Equation of State (EOS) for several different AAC densities. Oedometric tests were carried out using a home-made high-pressure triaxial apparatus, and pressures up to ~500 MPa were applied. The complete pressure-bulk strain relationships were measured, and new findings and insights were obtained. The paper presents the testing set-up and the measurement system. The data processing method accounting for the AAC pronounced shortening during the ongoing test is described using a weighted functions procedure for the circumferential strains' calculation, with which the confining pressure was determined. The boundary conditions effects on the test results were investigated, and a new technique for specimen insulation was suggested to ensure loading without friction and the prevention of local shear failure. The experimental EOS for different AAC densities were obtained. EOS curves for different specimens with the same density demonstrated good to very good repeatability of the EOS curves over the entire pressure range. Based on the tests results and the density's span, three classes of AAC are proposed. A preliminary attempt to apply the newly obtained EOS curves has been carried out to examine the energy dissipation for three different dynamic load levels. Although this is a preliminary stage that is beyond the objective of this paper, early interesting results were observed where an optimal AAC density, for which the highest energy has been absorbed, was identified. This finding encourages inclusion of that preliminary study as a closure section. Numerical simulations of wave propagation through ACC layers of different densities, laid on rigid supporting slabs, was carried out. Effective charging techniques must consider factors such as charging efficiency, lifecycle, charging time (CT), and battery temperature. Currently, most charging strategies primarily focus on CT and charging losses (CL), overlooking the crucial influence of battery temperature on battery life. Therefore, this study proposes a constant temperature–constant voltage (CT-CV) charging method based on minimizing energy losses. The charging process is primarily divided into three stages. In the first stage, a constant current (CC) charging is implemented using a 2C rate that aims to expedite battery charging but may result in a rapid temperature increase. The second stage involves constant temperature charging, where the charging current is regulated based on battery temperature feedback using a PID controller to maintain a stable battery temperature. The third stage is constant voltage (CV) charging, where a fixed current is applied continuously until the current drops below the charging cutoff current. After completion of the charging process, the charging time can be calculated, and charging losses can be determined by incorporating the battery equivalent circuit model (ECM). To determine the optimal transition time, the paper employs Coulomb counting and the battery ECM, considering both CT and losses to simulate the transition time with minimal CL. This approach achieves optimization of transition points by establishing ECM, measuring internal impedance of the battery, and simulating various charging scenarios, and eliminates the need for multiple actual experiments. Experimental results show that the charging time (CT) should be reduced and the maximum temperature rise (TR) should be reduced under the same average TR condition of the proposed method. At the same CT, the average TR and the maximum TR should both decrease. The charging method proposed in this study exhibits the following advantages: (1) simultaneous consideration of the battery's equivalent circuit model and charging time; (2) the achieved transition point demonstrates characteristics of minimized charging losses; (3) eliminates the need for multiple experimental iterations. In today's power system landscape, renewable energy (RE) resources play a pivotal role, particularly within the residential sector. Despite the significance of these resources, the intermittent nature of RE resources, influenced by variable weather conditions, poses challenges to their reliability as energy resources. Addressing this challenge, the integration of an energy storage system (ESS) emerges as a viable solution, enabling the storage of surplus energy during peak-generation periods and subsequent release during shortages. One of the great challenges of ESSs is how to design ESSs efficiently. This paper focuses on a distributed power-flow system within a smart home environment, comprising uncontrollable power generators, uncontrollable loads, and multiple energy storage units. To address the challenge of minimizing energy loss in ESSs, this paper proposes a novel approach, called energy-efficient storage capacity with loss reduction (SCALE) scheme, that combines multiple-load power-flow assignment with a load-shifting algorithm to minimize energy loss and determine the optimal energy storage capacity. The optimization problem for optimal energy storage capacity is formalized using linear programming techniques. To validate the proposed scheme, real experimental data from a smart home environment during winter and summer seasons are employed. The results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed algorithm in significantly reducing energy loss, particularly under winter conditions, and determining optimal energy storage capacity, with reductions of up to 11.4% in energy loss and up to 62.1% in optimal energy storage capacity. A new type of anti-rolling device denoted as a fluid momentum wheel (FMW) is proposed to address the limitations of traditional gyrostabilizers in reducing the roll responses of floating platforms in waves. The proposed device is based on the same gyroscope theorem, which differs from a rigid gyrostabilizer in that the internal fluid generates secondary flow in the cross-section under the combined effects of inertial centrifugal force and a radial pressure gradient, and the streamwise velocity exhibits a non-uniform distribution. These instability phenomena may cause mechanical energy loss in the flow field, which is critical for selecting the driving device and the anti-roll control performance of offshore platforms. In the study, different turbulence models are compared with the results of a Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) and experiments to ensure the accuracy of the numerical method, and the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of the flow field in FMW are analyzed. Therein, the SST k-ω model accurately verifies the flow instability phenomenon of the FMW observed in the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) experiment. Next, this paper proposes corresponding evaluation parameters to assess the impact of typical parameters on the flow field instability. The results show that the flow instability increases with an increase in the typical parameters of FMWs (such as the pipe diameter, curvature radius, and velocity). Furthermore, the paper discusses the relationship between dimensionless mechanical factors (Reynolds number, curvature ratio) and the spatiotemporal instability of the flow field, revealing the essential effects of the curvature ratio and Reynolds number on the loss coefficient. This paper studies mechanical properties and energy damage evolution of fiber-reinforced cemented sulfur tailings (CSTB) backfill. The effects of fiber length and fiber content on the stress, toughness and failure properties of the CSTB were systematically revealed. In addition, the energy index evolution law was studied, and the energy damage evolution mechanism of CSTB was revealed. The results show that the deformation failure of fiber-reinforced CSTB mainly goes through four stages: initial crack compaction, linear elastic deformation, yield failure and post-peak failure. The peak stress and residual stress of the CSTB firstly increase and then decrease with the increase of fiber content and the addition of fiber can promote the change from brittle failure to ductile failure of the CSTB. Adding appropriate amount of fiber can improve the toughness of CSTB, and the influence degree of fiber length on the toughness index of CSTB is 6mm>12mm>3mm. The total strain energy increases linearly along the variation of fiber content, while the elastic strain energy and dissipated energy increase exponentially at the peak stress point. In the process of CSTB deformation and failure, "gentle—linear growth—slow growth—rapid decline" is for elastic strain energy, while "gentle—slow growth—rapid growth—linear growth" is for dissipation energy. The damage and failure of CSTB mainly experienced four stages: initial damage, slow growth of damage, accelerated damage and damage failure, and the damage evolution curve also showed the changing characteristics of "gentle—slow growth—rapid growth—linear growth". The CSTB without added fiber showed obvious "Y-type" and "linear-type" shear failure characteristics and the phenomenon of shear cracks penetrating the backfill appeared. No big shear crack occur when it is damaged, showing that the fiber addition restrain the crack growth and improve the overall crack resistance of the CSTB. Hydration products are obviously distributed on the surface of the fiber, which indicates that the fiber will be evenly dispersed in the CSTB and form a certain bonding force with the cement-tailings matrix, thus improving the overall mechanical properties of the CSTB. This paper is concerned with the modeling of power dissipation due to friction and its relation with wear estimation in wheel–rail contact. Wear is a complex multi-scale and multi-physical phenomenon appearing in rolling contact. Wear is generated by high contact stress and the work of friction forces. This phenomenon leads to the appearing of the worn material in the form of wear debris between contacting surfaces. In contact models, wear is usually described in terms of the wear depth function. This function modifies the gap between the contacting bodies as well as the shape of the surfaces of the wheel and rail in contact. In this paper, besides the wear depth function, the dissipated energy, rather than the contact stress, is taken into account to evaluate the wear impact on rail or wheel surfaces. The dissipated energy allows us to more precisely evaluate the wear debris amount as well as the depth of wear and its distribution along the contact interface. A two-dimensional rolling contact problem with frictional heat flow is considered. The elasto-plastic deformation of the rail is considered. This contact problem is governed by a coupled system of mechanical and thermal equations in terms of generalized stresses, displacement and temperature. The finite element method is used to discretize this problem. A discretized system of equations with nonpenetration and friction conditions is transformed and formulated as a nonlinear complementarity problem. The generalized Newton method is applied to numerically solve this mechanical subproblem. The Cholesky method is used to find the solution of the heat-conductive problem. The dissipated power is evaluated based on the resultant force and slip at a reference point. The clearance existing between the impeller rim and the adjacent shroud within the pump configuration establishes conducive circumstances for the initiation of cavitation. The bubbles generated by cavitation will flow forward with the water, blocking the channel, and result in the degradation of the pump performance. When the cavitation is severe, vibration and noise will be generated. The impact formed by the collapse of the bubbles will seriously erode the blades and form pits on the blade surfaces. Drawing upon the outcomes derived from numerical simulations, this paper investigates the relationship between tip clearance and cavitation in an axial flow pump, with a specific focus on energy dissipation characteristics. The principal findings indicate that the dimensions of the tip clearance predominantly influence the spatial distribution of the tip leakage vortex (TLV) cavitation. The entropy production rate distribution at the tip correlates with both the cavitation level of the pump and the extent of the tip clearance. The shedding phenomenon of the TLV becomes more evident when analyzing the distribution of entropy production rates. During cavitation, an increased tip clearance is associated with a reduction in the dissipation of viscous entropy production within the impeller domain, and the entropy production resulting from turbulent dissipation significantly surpasses that arising from viscous dissipation. Large-displacement corner deformation often occurs at the joints of towering structures and long-span space structures subjected to strong earthquake. In order to improve the energy dissipation capacity of structural joints, the Nitrile Butadiene Rubber/High Abrasion Furnace Black (NBR/HAF) high damping composite was fabricated by formulation optimization in this paper, where a nonlinear large-deformation viscoelastic joint damper was proposed. The damper consists of five layers of restrained steel plates and four layers of shear energy dissipating material, which can reach 60 mm shear displacement. In this paper, dynamic mechanical performance tests and static mechanical tests were firstly conducted on the core energy dissipating media of the damper. The loss factor of NBR/HAF composite reached a peak of 1.51 at about 8.2°C, while its wide damping temperature range was 27°C. Second, the accuracy of the simulation method was verified by comparing the simulated and experimental hysteresis curves. Then, the refined numerical simulation of this damper was carried out using ABAQUS finite element software with the high damping material as its core energy dissipating media. Finally, the magnitude and type of energy dissipation of each part of the viscoelastic joint damper under different loads were investigated. It was found that the large-deformation viscoelastic joint damper based on the composite had good damping capacity. Its dynamic characteristics were affected by the displacement amplitude and excitation frequency, which exhibited hardening nonlinear characteristics. As the frequency and load amplitude increased, the peak displacement in the loading direction gradually decreased, whereas the total energy input to the damper and the energy dissipated by the viscoelastic material increased monotonically. The input energy was only dissipated by the viscoelastic material, and no plastic loss occurred in the steel plate during the entire loading stage. Under high frequency and large loads, the damper can also have good energy dissipation characteristics. There have been many reviews on the concept, origin, and research progress of superlubricity, but, among them, there are more presentations on the research status of solid superlubricity and liquid superlubricity; however, the theoretical summarization of solid–liquid combined superlubricity and high-temperature superlubricity is still imperfect and lacks a systematic and comprehensive review. The mechanism of superlubricity is not explicitly presented in many reviews, which are clearly summarized in this paper. This paper introduces superlubricity from friction, and then introduces the origin of superlubricity, and presents the research progress on superlubricityby separating it into in four categories: liquid superlubricity, solid superlubricity, solid–liquid combined superlubricity, and high-temperature superlubricity. By analyzing the superlubricity system, the mechanism of realizing various types of superlubricity, such as incommensurability, hydration, and oxidation, is summarized. The particle damper has been widely used as an efficient passive vibration control device in recent years. The highly non-linear characteristic of the energy dissipation mechanism is essential for our increased understanding of non-obstructive particle damper (NOPD). To connect motion modes of the granular system and energy dissipation, we developed a neural network using simulated annealing backpropagation (SA-BP) to predict the loss factor of NOPD in this paper. The simulations based on the verified discrete element method (DEM) model are carried out, and the data is used to train and test the neural network. Based on the prediction of a well-trained neural network using SA-BP, the relationship between the loss factors and the rheology behaviors of the granular system is discussed. This paper effectively combines intelligent algorithms (SA-BP) and particle damping characteristics. In South Africa, there has been a rapid adoption of solar power, particularly inverter-based solar sources, in low-voltage (LV) networks due to factors such as load shedding, rising electricity costs and greenhouse gas emissions reduction. In residential LV networks, the alignment between solar supply and energy demand is less precise, necessitating larger battery storage systems to effectively utilize solar energy. Residential areas experience peak energy demand in the morning and evening when solar irradiance is limited. As a result, substantial energy storage is important to fully utilize the potential of solar energy. However, increasing inverter-based, customer-generated power creates an imbalance in the utility supply. This is because utility LV supply transformers have three phases, while individual customers have single-phase connections and no load balancing control mechanism. This supply imbalance adversely affects the overall power quality, causing energy losses, damage to devices and other issues. To address these problems, the paper proposes a smart control approach to minimize power imbalances within utility LV supply transformers. The controller uses customer battery storage in residential areas to balance the utility transformer phases. A laboratory model was built to simulate a three-phase low-voltage network with single-phase customers, both with and without a smart controller. The results show that closely monitoring and controlling individual inverters through a central controller can significantly improve the balance of the supply network. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In long-distance, high-elevation gravitational water supply systems, it is essential to incorporate energy dissipation to lower pipeline pressures. The energy dissipation box is a novel device for pressure reduction, extensively utilized in gravitational flow transition systems. Despite its appealing contribution, systematic selection methods still need to be used regarding its optimum location. Hence, this paper considers the sum-of-the-maximum hydrostatic pressure head (SMHPH) and derives an extreme location equation for the energy dissipation box (EDB) in the design stage, and then, it comprehensively accounts for the overcurrent capacity and proposes a theoretical comparison and selection method for the optimal location (OL) between the critical and extreme locations. A theoretical analysis with an engineering case study is conducted to compare the theoretical OL, and numerical simulations are carried out to compare the pressure protection effect of the same box cross-sectional area and initial water volume of the theoretical OL and other possible locations with different initial water depths. The results show that the location of the EDB in the design stage should comprehensively consider the overcurrent capacity and the SMHPH. On the basis of both conditions, the oscillation amplitudes of the pressure gradient beyond the box are significantly decreased as the OL approaches closer to the downstream pipe. If the initial water depth in the box is large, the EDB provides greater protection to the pressure head (PH) by decreasing the cross-sectional area and then maximizing the utilization of water depth in the box and decreasing the volume of the EDB. Aiming at the current power control problems of grid-side electrochemical energy storage power station in multiple scenarios, this paper proposes an optimal power model prediction control (MPC) strategy for electrochemical energy storage power station. This method is based on the power conversion system (PCS) grid-connected voltage and current to establish a power prediction model for energy storage power stations, achieving a one-step prediction of the power of the power station. The power prediction error is used as a power regulation feedback quantity to correct the reference power input. Considering the state of charge ( S O C ) constraint of the battery, partition the S O C into different states. Using S O C as the power regulation feedback, the power of the battery compartment can be adjusted according to the range of the battery S O C to prevent S O C from exceeding the limit value, simultaneously calculating the power loss of the energy storage power station to improve the energy efficiency. The objective function is to minimize the power deviation and power loss of the power station. By solving the objective function, the optimal switching voltage vector of the converter output is achieved to achieve optimal power control of the energy storage power station. The simulation results in various application scenarios of the energy storage power station show that the proposed control strategy enables the power of the storage station to quickly and accurately track the demand of grid scheduling, achieving the optimal power control of the electrochemical energy storage power station. A coordinated control of front/rear traction, four-wheel independent braking, and an active roll control system is proposed in this paper to improve overall vehicle cornering performance. The control algorithm is structured in a hierarchical form: the supervisory controller is used to calculate the desired yaw rate and roll angle based on the driver input and vehicle states; the upper-level controller is utilized to decide the target longitudinal tire forces, yaw moment, and anti-roll moment based on the sliding mode control method; and the control allocator is used to optimally map the virtual control input to the control commands of specific actuators. Co-simulations of MATLAB/Simulink and CarSim were conducted to verify the performance enhancement of the proposed controller. The results suggest that the proposed controller can effectively enhance the driving performance in limit cornering while maintaining lateral stability, and it reduces tire usage, as indicated by the index of tire dissipation energy when compared to control methods such as AWD, AWD-ESC, and ICC. The utilization of baffle structures as a highly effective strategy for mitigating debris flow has attracted significant scholarly attention in recent years. Although the predominant focus of existing research has been on augmenting the energy dissipation capabilities of baffle structures, their deformation behavior under impact load has not been extensively investigated. Addressing this research gap, the current study systematically designs a series of physical model experiments, incorporating variables such as baffle height, shape, and various combinations of baffle types to comprehensively analyze the deformation characteristics of baffles subjected to debris flow impact. The experimental results reveal that the deformation of baffle group structures demonstrates a marked non-uniform spatial distribution and exhibits a latency effect. Additionally, distinct baffle configurations show considerable variations in peak strain, suggesting that combining different baffle shapes can not only optimize energy dissipation but also enhance resistance to deformation. Moreover, the relationship between baffle height and the development of deformation in relation to energy dissipation capacity is inconsistent, indicating that deformation must be a key consideration in the design of baffle structures. Consequently, this paper advocates for the formulation of a deformation-based design strategy for baffle structures, with the findings presented herein providing a foundational reference for future studies. In response to the problem that the standard AT2 phase field model cannot effectively model quasi-brittle failure and the existence of length dependence, a new modified phase field model is presented in this paper. By introducing an additional energy, the competing relationship between elastic strain energy and dissipation energy during fracture is changed. A new crack dissipation functional is established using the energy equivalent approach. By introducing a novel rational degradation function, not only can the strength of material failure be effectively utilized, but the model can also reproduce the cohesive softening relationship. A multi-field finite element method is used to discretize the model governing equations, and the equations are solved by an efficient BFGS monolithic algorithm. Finally, some representative numerical examples are used to analyze the effects of parameters in degradation function, length scale and mesh size on the results. The presented numerical simulation results demonstrate length scale and mesh scale independence, and are in good agreement with the experimental results and previous numerical results. At the same time, the numerical results also exhibit cohesive softening properties similar to the current phase field cohesive zone model. These results verify the robustness and effectiveness of the modified phase field model presented in this paper for simulating quasi-brittle failure and brittle fracture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
