Background: District Heating (DH) is a technology that provides heating and domestic hot water to buildings and is an important technology for supporting the European energy transition. As such the heating systems increasingly resort to renewable heat sources and waste heat, it is even more important that they operate in the most efficient way possible. DH companies have access to the primary network of which they can impact system performance. To maximize the efficiency of the system, however, it is important that the system at the building level, known as the secondary system, is also efficient; otherwise, overall system efficiency is reduced. To increase system efficiency, return temperatures from the secondary system into the primary system have been targeted through motivational tariffs. There is limited information on how to establish a motivational tariff that motivates the customer to improve both the primary and secondary systems, which is a gap that this paper aims to fill. Results: In this paper, the impacts of retrofit actions in secondary systems are assessed through simulations. The identified relevant refurbishment measures to lower the return temperature to the primary system are variable flow pumps, low-temperature radiators, parallel heat exchangers, and a pass-through DHW system. Apart from simulated refurbishments, we also identify that the secondary system sometimes generates excess heat, which is valuable to recover, especially during peak load periods for the primary system. Hence, motivational tariffs targeting secondary system efficiency should also encompass an incentive for the customer to make use of waste heat in the secondary circuit to lower peak demand for the DH system. Conclusions: To date, the most commonly used parameters introduced to customers are linked to the flow of water through the customer's asset and the bonus malus principle. The results from simulations show that DH companies can introduce additional parameters to support customers in guiding their secondary system to perform more efficiently. This paper studies the aircraft air circulation system and proposes a new architecture of the aircraft air circulation system. Combined with the neural network algorithm, the numerical simulation results of turbine, compressor, and heat exchanger are fitted and predicted, and the accuracy of the simulation model is verified by comparing with the experimental results. Comparing and analyzing the booster, F-15, F-35, and the newly proposed air circulation system, the engine bleed air volume consumed by the system under different flight conditions is obtained. The results show that the newly proposed air circulation system can save up to 71.4% of the engine bleed air compared with the simple boost and 29.8% of the engine bleed air compared with the F-35. A Ground Coupled Heat Pump (GCHP) is a highly energy efficient heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system that utilises the ground as the heat source when heating and as the heat sink when cooling. This paper investigates GCHP systems with horizontal Ground Heat Exchangers (GHEs) in the rural industry, exemplifying the technology for poultry (chicken) sheds in Australia. This investigation aims to provide an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model that can be used for GCHP design at various locations with different climates. To this extent, a Transient System Simulation Tool (TRNSYS) model for a typical horizontal GHE applied in a rural farm was first verified. Using this model, over 700,000 hourly performance data items were obtained, covering over 80 different yearly loading patterns under three different climate conditions. The simulated performance data was then used to train the ANN. As a result, the trained ANN can predict the performance of GCHP systems with identical (multiple) GHEs even under climatic conditions (and locations) that have not been specifically trained for. Unlike other works, the newly introduced ANN model is accurate even with limited types of input data, with high accuracy (less than 5% error in most cases tested). Borehole engineering encompasses the part of mining that involves the process of drilling boreholes and their utilization (e.g., for research, exploration, exploitation, and injection purposes). According to legal regulations, mining pits must be closed after their use, and this applies to pits in the form of boreholes as well. The Laboratory of Geoenergetics at AGH University of Krakow is involved in adapting old, exploited and already closed boreholes for energetic purposes. This includes geothermal applications, as well as energy storage in rock formations and boreholes. Geoenergetics is a relatively new concept that combines geothermal energy with energy storage in rock formations (including boreholes). One type of analysed borehole is a freezing borehole. They are used, for example, in drilling mining shafts that are in the vicinity of aquifers and are drilled using the rotary drilling method with a reverse circulation of drilling mud, or in peat bogs. For borehole heat exchangers based on freezing boreholes for long-term mathematical modelling, several heating scenarios were considered with several thermal loads. The maximum average power obtained after one year of usage of four boreholes with variable temperatures was 11 kW. With the usage of 10 boreholes the power reached over 27 kW. The heat-carrying temperature was assumed to be 22 °C during early summer (June and July) and 2 °C during the rest of the year. When considering stable exploitation during a 10-year period with four boreholes with the same temperatures, a heating power of over 12 kW was obtained, as well as a power of over 28 kW when considering using 10 boreholes. The maximum amount of heat obtained during the 10-year period using 10 boreholes was over 8.8 thousand GJ. Once they have fulfilled their function, these boreholes lose their technological significance. The study presents a comparative analysis of the reliability of marine and industrial diesel engines, emphasizing the role of heat exchangers. Diesel engines in marine vessels and industrial applications face distinct challenges, influencing their reliability. This paper examines these differences, focusing on operational conditions, load profiles, redundancy, safety measures, and maintenance practices. Three types of heat exchangers (Fin fan, Plate, and Shell & Tube) are analyzed which are used in these engines. The assessment covers failure rates, Mean Time to Failure (MTTF), and the impact of independent and dependent failures on reliability. The study identifies unique failure modes like insufficient heat transfer, external leakage, parameter deviation, and structural deficiencies and their differing impacts in marine and industrial contexts. The research highlights the sensitivity of marine engine heat exchangers to seawaterinduced corrosion and fouling, affecting heat transfer efficiency. In contrast, industrial engines display varying failure characteristics due to system controls and operational parameters. A significant finding is the decrease in reliability over time for all heat exchanger types, underscoring the importance of maintenance and monitoring. Our results show slight shifts in failure rates due to equipment inefficiencies markedly affecting heat exchangers' operational lifecycles. The study concludes with a necessity for tailored maintenance strategies and design considerations for marine and industrial diesel engine heat exchangers. In this paper, a novel concept of a finned piston system is presented and analyzed in which the compression heat is continuously extracted from the compression chamber. The resulting compression characteristic moves in the direction of an isothermal process, reducing the temperature of the compressed fluid in the compression chamber and reducing the necessary mechanical work required to carry out the process. The finned piston concept consists in an integrated heat exchanger inside of the chamber that is constituted of imbricated flat fins placed on the stator part and on the mobile piston. The internal heat exchange on the surface is strongly increased in comparison with a classical piston/cylinder. The energetic performance of the new system is evaluated with the help of simulation. The pressures, forces, and temperature of the compressed gas are simulated as well as the mechanical work needed. Indirect evaporative coolers (IECs) for air conditioning rely on liquid water being sprayed into the exhaust stream of used air to induce evaporation and cool down the incoming stream of fresh air in an indirect heat exchanger. This paper describes a computational fluid dynamics analysis that makes use of the particle transport model to simulate the evaporation of the water droplets at the exhaust side of an IEC using a pre-implemented spray dryer model. Critical parameters include the average size of the droplets and the amount of water sprayed into the system. In addition to droplet evaporation, the evaporation of water from the wet wall on the exhaust side is accounted for. The results show the calculated temperature field in both air streams, the pressure distribution, the relative humidity distribution at the exhaust side and the particle tracks. The predicted wet bulb efficiency of around 30–35% is moderate but in agreement with the literature to date, and it can be attributed to the small heat exchanger size. A parametric study investigated the effect of the droplet size and mass flow rate. At an average size of 50 microns and below, the effect of the mass flow rate is quite strong, while at a higher droplet size the mass flow effect is small. The so-called internally channeled tube (ICT) is an innovative heat exchanger design proposed in our recent publications based on a channels-in-tube principle. A general, three-dimensional numerical model was suggested to describe fluid dynamics and heat transfer in the ICT. This model has already been validated for turbulent flow. The current paper presents an experimental investigation of the ICT and the model validation under laminar flow conditions. The experimental set-up and measurement procedure are given in detail and the maldistribution issue is addressed. The deviation between simulated and measured values is below 11% for the pressure drop and below 8% for the wall and bulk temperatures. Furthermore, the ICT performance was evaluated using performance evaluation criterion (PEC) including both heat transfer rate and pressure drop. High summer temperatures pose numerous challenges to the oil and gas recovery process in oil depots, including reduced adsorption tank recovery rates and decreased absorption tower desorption efficiency. This paper introduces a coupling design approach that integrates chemical process design with computational fluid dynamics simulation. The proposed approach is then utilized to investigate the optimal design and performance of the heat exchanger within the oil depot's oil and gas recovery system. First, according to the given process design parameters, the heat exchanger is preliminary designed to determine the required heat exchange area and heat load. Based on the preliminary design results, a detailed design is carried out, resulting in the following calculations: the hot fluid has inlet and outlet temperatures of 40 °C and 29.52 °C, respectively, with an outlet flow velocity of 9.89 m/s. The cold fluid exhibits inlet and outlet temperatures of 25 °C and 26.98 °C, respectively, with an outlet flow velocity of 0.06 m/s. The specific structure and dimensions of the heat exchanger are determined, including the shell type, pipe specifications, and pipe length. Finally, CFD numerical simulation is utilized to analyze the flow field, velocity field, and pressure field within the designed heat exchanger. The calculations reveal the following findings: the hot fluid exhibited inlet and outlet temperatures of 40 °C and 29.54 °C, respectively, along with an outlet flow velocity of 9.94 m/s. On the other hand, the cold fluid shows inlet and outlet temperatures of 25 °C and 26.39 °C, respectively, with an outlet flow velocity of 0.061 m/s. The results show that the chemical process design and CFD numerical simulation results are consistent and can be mutually verified. The designed heat exchanger can efficiently cool oil and gas from 40 °C to 30 °C, and the oil and gas processing capacity can reach 870 m3/h, which is conducive to realizing the goals of energy saving, environmental protection, and safety. In this paper, a comprehensive analysis of the combined effect of major influencing parameters on heat transfer in a single U-tube BHE (sBHE) and a double U-tube BHE (dBHE) with two independent circuits was performed by using a validated numerical heat transfer model. Geometrical parameters, such as shank spacing (with maximum, average, and minimum values), borehole diameter (large, medium, and small borehole sizes), and borehole depth (shallow, average, and deep borehole depths) as well as the thermal conductivity of soil and grout, which ranges from minimum to high values, were considered. The combined impact of these parameters was included under the following four major cases: (1) the combined effect of borehole depth, borehole size, and shank spacing; (2) the combined effect of borehole depth and soil and grout thermal conductivity; (3) the combined effect of soil and grout thermal conductivity and borehole size; and (4) the combined effect of soil thermal conductivity, borehole size, and shank spacing. Each of these major cases has nine different design options for both sBHEs and dBHEs. A series of results of heat transfer per unit borehole depth were generated for all the considered various cases. With the reduction in fossil fuels and growing concerns about global warming, energy has become one of the most important issues facing humanity. It is crucial to improve energy utilization efficiency and promote a low-carbon transition. In comparison with traditional heat exchangers, heat pipe heat exchangers indicate high compactness, a flexible arrangement, complete separation of hot and cold fluids, good isothermal operations, etc. As a result, heat pipe heat exchangers have attracted wide attention and application in various fields in recent years. This paper provides an overview of the application of heat pipe heat exchangers, with a focus on the application in waste heat recovery, and analyzes the opportunities and challenges of heat pipe heat exchanger applications based on existing publications. One of the major problems of using nanofluids in heat exchange applications is the forming and deposition of nanoparticles on the inner surface of the heat exchanger. In this paper, Water-Cmc fluid is used as a surfactant for nanoparticles to prevent deposition and congregation. The pressure drops and heat transfer in U-bend double pipe heat exchanger based on water-MgO-Cmc fluid, are examined. Nanoparticles of Magnesium Oxide (MgO) and Carboxymethyl Cellulose (Cmc) are used with pure water as a base fluid. The experimental rig and procedures are designed to facilitate various operational conditions such as flow rate, volume concentration of MgO particles and weight concentration of Cmc particles. Furthermore, convective heat transfer coefficient, heat exchanger effectiveness, pressure drop, friction factor, under different conditions, are measured. The results demonstrate convective heat transfer coefficient of U-bend double pipe heat exchangers is enhanced by 35% for 1 MgO vol.% and 0.2 Cmc wt.% compared to base fluid (Water-Cmc). It is concluded that pressure drops are directly proportion to the increase of MgO nanoparticles at same Cmc concentration by 23% at 0.2 wt.%. Whilst, friction factor of the system is inversely proportion to the increase of volumetric flow rate of water-MgO-Cmc fluid. An increase in MgO nanoparticle concentration increases the friction factor, hence maximum friction factor enhancement by 38% for MgO concentration of 1 vol.%. The effectiveness of heat exchanger is slightly increased by 8% with increase of MgO concentration and flow rate. To demonstrate the rationalization of multi-longitudinal swirls in heat exchanger tubes, this paper investigates the thermohydraulic performance of heat exchanger tube with rectangular vortex generator using numerical simulation. Comparative analyses of rectangular vortex generators and their different slotted structures are conducted, along with the investigation of the effect of the longitudinal pitch (P = 0.1 m, 0.2 m and 0.3 m) of the rectangular vortex generators on the thermohydraulic performance. The research reveals that the multi-longitudinal swirls induced by the vortex generator inside the tube accelerate the exchange of cold and hot fluids, improve the field synergies of velocity vectors and temperature gradients, and enhance the heat transfer efficiency of the heat exchanger tube. The slotted structure reduces the flow resistance and lowers the degree of disturbance to the fluid, which reduces the strength of the multi-longitudinal swirls, thus weakening the overall performance of the heat exchanger. The strength of the multi-longitudinal swirls has a direct influence on the overall performance of the heat exchanger tube. With the increase of P, the performance evaluation criteria (PEC) of the heat exchanger tubes decreases, and the maximum PEC = 1.44 is obtained for P = 100 mm at the studied Reynolds number range. NHR-200-II is a small integrated pressurized water reactor with 200 MW core thermal power. The core heat is transferred to two independent intermediate circuits via fourteen in-vessel primary heat exchangers (PHE), and the heat in the intermediate circuits is transferred to feedwater by two steam generators (SG) in the two intermediate circuits respectively. A passive residual heat removal (PRHR) branch is connected to each intermediate circuit to remove core decay heat under postulated accidents. During normal operation, PRHR branches are isolated by valves while SG branches in intermediate circuits are open. The valves in PRHR branches will be opened and the isolation valves of SG branches will be closed during decay heat removal scenarios. The decay heat removal capacity of NHR-200-II PRHRS could be seriously deteriorated once the isolation valves for SG branches fail to close, which was confirmed in a scaled integral test loop previously. Current understanding of PRHRS's thermal- hydraulic characteristics with possible isolation failure in SG branches is limited. In this paper, the NHR-200-II PRHRS is modeled with RELAP5 considering the case of success and fail to isolate SG branches. A series of numerical simulations are carried out to study the impact of various parameters, such as the initial temperature, the size of the intermediate circuits' header, and the initial flow direction in the intermediate circuits. Oscillatory flow is found when SG branches fail to be isolated under certain parameters combinations. An improved PRHRS design is purposed to eliminate possible flow oscillations, and the purposed improved design are tested by numerical simulations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) heat exchangers (HXs) have been investigated in this paper along with additive manufacturing (AM). Heat transfer coefficients, pressure drops, and thermal capacity were systematically evaluated as functions of wall thickness, lattice cell density, and materials. It turns out that when thermal conductivity is above 100 W/m·K, gyroid HXs are less sensitive to variations in thickness and thermal conductivity. Additive manufacturing of 20 kW aluminum heat exchangers was successful and testing results are comparable with theoretical prediction. The thermodynamic efficiency of a wire mesh fixed matrix regenerative heat exchanger mainly depends on the regenerator's heating performance and losses. This paper aims to increase the effectiveness and decrease the pressure loss of static regenerators with wire mesh screens as packing geometry. The entropy generated for several combinations of mesh screens is calculated by using the entropy generation minimization method (EGM), and this method helps in finding the right combination with the minimum entropy generation. The study aims to minimize entropy generation by dividing the conventional uniform mesh regenerator pack length into multiple zones by accommodating different combinations of wire mesh screens. For the sample flow condition, it is observed that 3.94 × 103 W/K entropy is generated by uniform mesh, and from 68 hybrid mesh combinations, 80–120–200 generated 2.11 × 103 W/K. By balancing pressure loss and thermal efficiency, the potential of EGM-based optimization is underscored during this study, which improves the regenerator's performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Shell and tube-type crossflow heat exchangers with circular fins are widely used in various industries, including nuclear power plants. This study focuses on the sodium-to-air heat exchanger, which is one of the key safety features in sodium-cooled fast reactors. Tube alignment inside the heat exchanger is important because it directly determines the performance. Although heat exchangers are generally designed to have staggered tube alignment, inevitable inline-aligned zones exist. Therefore, this paper proposes a hybrid tube alignment modeling approach that considers both staggered and inline tube heat transfer phenomena. The results of the hybrid model calculations are verified and validated with liquid sodium experiments. The hybrid approach to the tube arrangement reduced the temperature deviation between experimental and calculated values to a difference of 4.55% and 7.38% for both sodium and air sides, respectively, while for the heat transfer, the difference was 15.12% and 9.06% for sodium and air sides, respectively. The results of this study can also be used as a basis for the safety evaluation of nuclear reactors and licensing processes for sodium-cooled fast reactors. In addition, this study is limited not only to sodium heat exchangers but also to any serpentine tube arrangement or crossflow heat exchanger under high-temperature systems, such as concentrated solar power and thermal energy storage industries. The paper presents the results of experimental investigation and the new statistical method for the determination of preliminary thermal characteristics of a prototype compact minichannel heat exchanger with laminar flows and significant heat transfer in the manifolds. The exemplary heat exchanger consists of 9 straight, parallel, square-shaped channels and two rectangular-shaped manifolds milled on both sides of the single aluminium plate. The design of the investigated heat exchanger is quite particular, as the heat transfer area of both pairs of manifolds provides almost 1/3 of the total heat transfer area. In the new statistical method presented in this paper, the manifolds' and channels' heat flows are considered separately. The heat exchanger's thermal characteristic was obtained statistically on the basis of the experimental results and is presented in the form of the overall heat transfer rate. The developed thermal characteristic model accounts for two effects, among many others, which may affect heat transfer in the exchanger, i.e. the heat loss to the ambient and the significant heat transfer in the manifolds. It is proved that the heat transfer to the surroundings was negligible due to the suitable thermal insulation. In order to demonstrate that the heat transfer in the manifolds is significant, two calculation variants are presented. The relative differences (residuals) between the experimental and statistically corrected heat transfer rates and the coefficient of determination R² are determined in both variants. In the first variant the heat transfer in the manifold pairs is neglected and in the second model it is included. It was observed that the lack of consideration of the heat transfer in the manifold pairs provides drastic dispersion between the experimental and statistical results. In turn, in the second model, where the manifolds are accounted for, a significant enhancement in the consistency of the results is noticed. The relative residuals are much lower, and the corresponding coefficient R² is improved from R² = 0.8827 in the first variant to R² = 0.9335 in the second one, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The spiral-wound heat exchanger (SWHE) is the primary low-temperature heat exchanger for large-scale LNG plants due to its high-pressure resistance, compact structure, and high heat exchange efficiency. This paper studied the shell-side heat and mass transfer characteristics of vapor-liquid two-phase mixed refrigerants in an SWHE by combining a multi-component model in FLUENT software with a customized multicomponent mass transfer model. Besides, the mathematical model under the sloshing condition was obtained through mathematical derivation, and the corresponding UDF code was loaded into FLUENT as the momentum source term. The results under the sloshing conditions were compared with the relevant parameters under the steady-state condition. The shell-side heat and mass transfer characteristics of the SWHE were investigated by adjusting the component ratio and other working conditions. It was found that the sloshing conditions enhance the heat transfer performance and sometimes have insignificant effects. The sloshing condition is beneficial to reduce the flow resistance. The comprehensive performance of multi-component refrigerants has been improved and the improvement is more significant under sloshing conditions, considering both the heat transfer and pressure drop. These results will provide theoretical support for the research and design of multi-component heat and mass transfer enhancement of LNG SWHE under ocean sloshing conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The printed circuit heat exchanger (PCHE) is receiving wide attention as a new kind of compact heat exchanger and is considered as a promising vaporizer in the LNG process. In this paper, a PCHE straight channel in the length of 500 mm is established, with a semicircular cross section in a diameter of 1.2 mm. Numerical simulation is employed to investigate the flow and heat transfer performance of supercritical methane in the channel. The pseudo-boiling theory is adopted and the liquid-like, two-phase-like, and vapor-like regimes are divided for supercritical methane to analyze the heat transfer and flow features. The results are presented in micro segment to show the local convective heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop. It shows that the convective heat transfer coefficient in segments along the channel has a significant peak feature near the pseudo-critical point and a heat transfer deterioration when the average fluid temperature in the segment is higher than the pseudo-critical point. The reason is explained with the generation of vapor-like film near the channel wall that the peak feature related to a nucleateboiling- like state and heat transfer deterioration related to a film-boiling-like state. The effects of parameters, including mass flow rate, pressure, and wall heat flux on flow and heat transfer were analyzed. In calculating of the averaged heat transfer coefficient of the whole channel, the traditional method shows significant deviation and the micro segment weighted average method is adopted. The pressure drop can mainly be affected by the mass flux and pressure and little affected by the wall heat flux. The peak of the convective heat transfer coefficient can only form at high mass flux, low wall heat flux, and near critical pressure, in which condition the nucleate-boiling-like state is easier to appear. Moreover, heat transfer deterioration will always appear, since the supercritical flow will finally develop into a filmboiling- like state. So heat transfer deterioration should be taken seriously in the design and safe operation of vaporizer PCHE. The study of this work clarified the local heat transfer and flow feature of supercritical methane in microchannel and contributed to the deep understanding of supercritical methane flow of the vaporization process in PCHE. A liquid nitrogen cooling circulating unit is a necessary condition for the stable operation of a cryogenic oscillator, which can provide a stable working environment for the oscillator. In this paper, according to the user's functional requirements and performance parameters, a closed cooling system with supercooled liquid nitrogen as the medium was designed using SOLIDWORKS 2021 software, which can provide a suitable working environment for the cryogenic oscillator. Combined with the system heat load analysis, theoretical calculation for and the design of the coil heat exchanger, one of the core pieces of equipment of the unit, were carried out. The performance of the designed nitrogen exhaust heater was studied using FLUENT 2021 software, and the velocity field and temperature field of the nitrogen exhaust heater were analyzed. The results show that the outlet temperature of the nitrogen exhaust heating device can reach up to 310 K, and the outlet flow rate of the heating device is 0.01528 kg/s. The experiments on the liquid nitrogen circulating unit using the simulated load equipment show that the refrigeration power of the unit can reach a design index of 600 W, and the temperature of the liquid nitrogen at the liquid outlet of the unit can reach 77.8 K. As a renewable energy source, geothermal energy has been widely used to provide space heating and cooling for buildings. The thermal performance of ground heat exchanger (GHE) is significant for the operating efficiency of the ground source heat pump (GSHP) systems. This paper presents a comprehensive review of developments and advances of three kinds of GHE, including vertical borehole GHE (VBGHE), Pile GHE (PGHE), and deep borehole GHE (DBGHE) which are currently popular in larger GSHP systems. Firstly, analytical models proposed to analyze heat transfer process of VBGHE with different geological conditions are summarized, such as homogenous or heterogeneous ground, with or without groundwater advection. Numerical and short-time step models and measures to improve GHE thermal performance are also reviewed. Secondly, a summary of research advances in PGHE is provided, which includes the heat transfer models of PGHE, the effects of geometric structure, operation modes, pile spacing, use of phase change material (PCM), thermal properties of PCM, thermo-mechanical behavior and/or thermal performance of PGHE. The effects of groundwater flow direction and velocity on PGHE are also summarized in brief. Lastly, models of three kinds of DBGHEs, i.e., deep coaxial GHE (DCGHE), deep U-bend GHE (DUGHE) and super-long gravity heat pipe (SLGHP), are reviewed. The physical bases of the different analytical models are elaborated and also their advantages and disadvantages are described. Advances in numerical modelling and improving numerical model calculation speed of DCBHE, DCBHE array, and DUBHE are summarized. In order to provide a more comprehensive depiction of the actual heat transfer process in energy piles, this research paper presents an approximate solution for a finite line heat source model operating under variable heat flow conditions. This solution is established by integrating the finite line heat source model and the superposition principle. Furthermore, the W-tube heat exchanger is divided into many segments, and a segmented superposition approach is used based on the thermal response. Consequently, a heat transfer model for a single-pile heat source is formulated, taking into consideration the heat exchange between the circulating water and the energy pile. Notably, the soil temperature predicted by this proposed model closely aligns with the results obtained from the FLUENT numerical model, thereby substantiating the accuracy of the proposed approach. Simultaneously, the heat transfer model is employed to analyze variations in temperature and heat flux density within the heat exchanger and to investigate the influence of parameters such as mass-flow rate, pile-soil heat transfer coefficient, pile-soil density, and pile-soil specific heat capacity on the heat transfer characteristics of energy piles. This model enables the determination of time-varying heat flux and precise outlet temperature, thereby facilitating a rapid assessment of the heat transfer efficiency of energy piles. Sustainability has become a broad societal goal, aiming to ensure that human beings coexist safely and harmoniously with nature over a longer time. The influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on the global economy is coming to an end. The development and merits of sustainable energy supply, advanced technology, and economic features have received significant attention over the last few decades. However, significant gaps still exist with respect to how to design, construct, and implement hybrid and optimal energy systems with the lowest investment and cost. Since 2002, the Sustainable Development of Energy, Water, and Environment Systems (SDEWES) conferences have become a significant meeting venue for researchers to introduce, discuss, share, and disseminate novel concepts and ideas. This paper presents an overview of published articles in the Special Issues (SIs) dedicated by the series SDEWES conferences, especially those published in Energies recommended by the 16th SDEWES Conference, which was held on 10–15 October 2021 in Dubrovnik, Croatia. This SI in Energies focused on four main topics, including the application of renewable bioenergy, component enhancement in renewable systems, sustainable development for buildings and economic analysis and evaluation for sustainability. The collected papers provide insight into the topics related to recent advances in improving sustainable efficiency, including studies on waste-to-wealth techniques, utilization of hybrid bioenergy systems, heat exchangers and other components for performance enhancement, energy supply and demand analysis, low-temperature DHC systems, techno-economic assessment, and environmental evaluation. This paper provides recommendations for improved analyses of the performance of ground-coupled heat pumps. Most research on ground-coupled heat pumps focuses on improving the performance of borehole heat exchangers (BHE) and reducing system costs. However, the potential improvements are mainly assessed at the BHE level rather than considering the entire system incorporating a heat pump, circulation pump, and building needs. This paper shows that such an approach can be misleading, and improvements in BHE are significantly overestimated if the operation of the entire system is not simulated. For instance, improvements in pipe thermal conductivity (from 0.4 to 3 W/(m K)) result in a 7.57% improvement in BHE performance when simulating only a BHE (constant inlet temperature assumed). However, a more realistic simulation of the entire system shows that improvements at a system level are only 0.15%. Other important simulation aspects are also investigated, focusing on different choices regarding the sensitivity analysis method, flow condition type, and optimization strategy. The results suggest that modifications to individual BHE parameters have a limited impact on the overall system performance, while modifying all parameters simultaneously can lead to more significant reductions in total system energy consumption (6% in this study). Amidst the background of "double carbon", energy saving and emission reduction is a popular direction in the current refrigeration industry. Therefore, the research on the boiling heat transfer of gas–liquid two-phase flow is helpful to strengthen the heat transfer and design a more efficient heat exchanger. In this paper, a research method combining numerical simulation and experimental verification is adopted. Firstly, an experimental platform used for the subcooled flow boiling of refrigerant in casing tubes is introduced and experiments are carried out to obtain experimental data, which provides a theoretical basis for the development of numerical simulation and verifies the feasibility of numerical simulation. A numerical model of subcooled flow boiling in R22 was established and the grid independence test was carried out. Based on the simulation results, three factors affecting the boiling heat transfer of R22 are analyzed: First, the boiling heat transfer coefficient of R22 increases with the increase of the mass flow rate of R22, but the increase decreases when the mass flow rate increases from 0.018 kg/s to 0.020 kg/s. Second, the boiling heat transfer coefficient of R22 increases significantly with the increase of hot water flow rate. Third, the influence of R22 subcooling on boiling heat transfer is more complex. When the subcooling is 5 °C and 1 °C, heat transfer can be enhanced; high subcooling at 5 °C can enhance convective heat transfer and low subcooling at 1 °C can accelerate the arrival of saturated boiling. In this paper, three kinds of bubble behaviors affecting heat transfer in supercooled flow boiling, including sliding, polymerization, and bounce are also studied, which provides a basis for further research on heat transfer mechanism of supercooled flow boiling. Adsorption systems are alternatives to compressor cooling systems. Apart from many advantages, these systems are characterized by low COP and SCP parameters. One of the most promising options to improve the performance of adsorption chillers is the replacement of the stationary bed with a fluidized one. A fluidized bed significantly increases the heat and mass transfer within the bed, enables better contact between gas and solid phases, and results in the proper mixing of adsorbent particles. This paper presents the possibility of using fluidized beds in adsorption chillers. This paper shows the results of CFD numerical modelling of the operation of a fluidized bed for an adsorption chiller and simulations of the bed temperature profiles during the adsorption and desorption processes of sorbent in a fluidized bed. The present paper describes a study case of the failure investigation of duplex stainless steel (UNS S31803) on the tube and tube sheet sections of BEM TEMA-type shell and tube heat exchanger with seawater as the cooling medium. The heat exchanger's shell design pressure was 22.6 MPa at 422 K, and the tube design pressure was 1 MPa at 339 K. Although UNS S31803 offers high strength, high resistance to chloride-induced SCC, and high resistance to pitting attack in chloride environments, the heat exchanger in this study experienced some material degradation after 28 months of use; 102 out of 270 tubes failed, 26 tubes leaked and were plugged on both sides, and scale plugged 76 tubes. The examination in this study case revealed the formation of white-colored biofilm inside the tubes; XRD examination revealed that the film contained CaCO3. Using microstructural examination on the inner surface of the tube, the austenite grains were shown to have been preferentially attacked; this phenomenon is typical in duplex stainless steel which fails due to crevice corrosion. According to the examination result, the failure in this case was caused by crevice corrosion between the substrate and surface deposits that was enhanced by microbiological-induced corrosion (MIC). A plate heat exchanger (PHE) is a modern, effective type of heat transfer equipment capable of increasing heat recuperation and energy efficiency. For PHEs, enhanced methods of heat transfer intensification can be further applied using the analysis and knowledge already available in the literature. A review of the main developments in the construction and exploration of PHEs and in the methods of heat transfer intensification is presented in this paper with an analysis of the main construction modifications, such as plate-and-frame, brazed and welded PHEs. The differences between these construction modifications and their influences on the thermal and hydraulic performance of PHEs are discussed. Most modern PHEs have plates with inclined corrugations on their surface that create a strong, rigid construction with multiple contact points between the plates. The methods of PHE exploration are mostly experimental studies and/or CFD modelling. The main corrugation parameters influencing PHE performance are the corrugation inclination angle in relation to the main flow direction and the corrugation aspect ratio. Optimisation of these parameters is one way to enhance PHE performance. Other methods of heat transfer enhancement, including improving the form of the plate corrugations, use of nanofluids and active methods, are considered. This paper investigates comprehensively the operational dynamics of a thermochemical heat storage (TCHS) reactor for low-temperature applications using polyaluminum sulfate and takes into consideration a developed simulation model with an experimentation validation. Significant concordances were found between the developed simulation model and the experimental results. Results reveal optimized conditions for the charging process using an electrical heater, with a heating temperature of 120°C at 10 K/min over 500 minutes. This achieves full material charging, with stabilized pressure drops at an equilibrium of 80 mbar, corresponding to a temperature of approximately 108°C, and yielding a thermal power of 950 W. An inlet vapor pressure of 18 mbar at 10°C for 5 hours is sufficient to completely discharge the bed, with pressure drops reaching around 30 mbar and a thermal power of 300 after reaction completion. Insights into conversion extents during both processes are provided, along with a remarkable thermal efficiency of 90% and a coefficient of performance (COP) of 97%, surpassing recommended theoretical values (50%). The study suggests further enhancing system performance through the design and implementation of a dedicated heat exchanger. The achievement of 75% of the targeted thermal power specification represents a significant milestone, offering valuable contributions towards the realization of sustainable technological advancements of both the reactor technology of TCHS and state-of-the-art thermal energy storage solutions. From the research, it is possible to infer further suggestions for enhancing this performance by designing and implementing a dedicated heat exchanger for both heat supply and retrieval mechanisms. Heat exchangers, as essential devices for facilitating heat transfer, have found a variety applications in various industries. However, the occurrence of corrosion-related failures in real-world scenarios remains a prevalent problem that can lead to catastrophic incidents. This paper investigates the problem of corrosion perforation on the outlet flange of a heat exchanger in a sour steam stripper from a petrochemical company. Failure analysis was performed using physical testing and chemical analysis, metallographic examination, microscopic observation, and energy spectrum analysis. Intergranular corrosion experiments and flow calculations were performed to verify the analysis. The results indicate that the main cause of the flange corrosion perforation was the formation of a highly concentrated NH4HS aqueous solution during the cooling process of the NH3, H2S, and water vapor in the fluid passing through the heat exchanger, and the velocity was too high, which triggered alkali-sour water washout corrosion. To prevent the recurrence of similar corrosion perforations, recommendations for material and process optimization are proposed to effectively reduce the safety production risks in refinery units and provide valuable information for the safe long-term operation of a sour steam stripper. Air-cooled heat exchangers in various industries enjoy an increasingly wider use thanks to their environmental friendliness and absence of the need for cooling water. Air-cooled heat exchangers from annular finned tubes are widely used in chemical, petrochemical, oil-refining, gas, and food industries, and also at automobile compressed natural gas filling stations (NGV gas stations), in heat power engineering, electric power engineering, refrigeration technology, and at nuclear power plants. The thermal capacity of air-cooled heat exchangers is largely determined by the characteristics of the motion of a flow of cooling air through them that can be organized with consumption of electric power by means of a ventilator or in an energy-saving regime by free convection. Unfortunately, the region of ambient air temperatures at which it is possible to use air-cooled heat exchangers under the conditions of free convection is limited. Low heat transfer intensity compared to forced convection is the main drawback of the free-convection regime which is usually compensated by an increase in a heat-emitting area, namely, by finning the heat transfer surface. By equipping air-cooled heat exchangers with additional devices making it possible to intensify free convection, the thermal performance of heat exchangers can be improved significantly. Researchers and engineers are actively working on enhancing the efficiency of heat exchangers in engineering applications by developing novel designs, exploring new materials, and utilizing nanofluids. Three kinds of nanofluids with varying concentrations are investigated in this paper. The objective is to assess the performance of N‐shaped double‐pipe heat exchanger used in thermoelectric power plants. The performance has been evaluated using COMSOL Multiphysics software. The findings show that higher nanofluid concentrations resulted in elevated heat transfer coefficients and improved efficiency of N‐shape double pipe heat exchanger. The analysis revealed that a mere 1% rise in the volume fraction of nanofluids enhanced the efficiency of the heat exchanger on average 23% when compared to the base fluid (water). In comparison to the N‐shape double pipe (Inconel 625) heat exchangers, the N‐shape double pipe (copper) heat exchangers appear to be more efficient. The introduction of nanoparticles has a notable impact on the heat transfer coefficients. Specifically, within an N‐shaped double pipe (copper) heat exchanger, the inclusion of a 1% volume fraction results in a 2.09% enhancement in the heat transfer coefficient for Al2O3/water, a 1.3% improvement for Fe3O4/water, and a 1.15% increase for TiO2/water. It also exposed that adding 1% Al2O3/water led to a significant 0.623% increase in effectiveness, while TiO2/water showed a 0.259% rise, and Fe3O4/water exhibited a 0.375% improvement. Moreover, increasing the Reynolds number enhances the Nusselt number for Al2O3/water and Fe3O4/water nanofluids by 55.22%, and for TiO2/water by 54.60% at a 6% volume concentration, leading to additional increases in exchanger efficiency. Therefore, the augmentation in nanofluid concentration leads to a reduction in the temperature pinch points both at the intake and outflow. The current lack of a high-precision, real-time model applicable to the control optimization process of heat exchange systems, especially the difficulty in determining the overall heat transfer coefficient K of heat exchanger operating parameters in real time, is a prominent issue. This paper mainly unfolds the following work: 1. We propose a dynamic model for the control and optimization of the heat exchanger operation. By constructing a system to collect real-time operating data on the flow rates and temperatures on both sides of the heat exchanger, the parameter identification of the overall heat transfer coefficient K is performed. Subsequently, by combining this with mechanistic equations, a novel heat exchanger model is established based on the fusion of mechanistic principles and reinforcement learning. 2. We validate the new model, where the average relative error between the model's temperature output values and the actual measured values is below 5%, indicating the high identification accuracy of the model. Moreover, under variations in the temperature and flow rate, the overall heat transfer coefficient K demonstrates the correct patterns of change. 3. To further enhance the model's identification accuracy, a study on the reward functions in reinforcement learning is conducted. A model with the Logarithmic Mean Temperature Difference (LMTD) as the reward function exhibits a high identification accuracy. However, upon comparison, a model using the Arithmetic Mean Temperature Difference (AMTD) for relative error as the reward function shows an even higher identification accuracy. The model is validated under various operating conditions, such as changes in the flow rate on the hot side, demonstrating good scalability and applicability. This research contributes to providing a high-precision dynamic parameter basis for the precise control of heat exchange systems, offering significant guidance for the control optimization of actual heat exchange system operations. The low-low-temperature electrostatic precipitator (LLT-ESP) is considered one of the mainstream technological approaches for achieving ultra-low ash emissions and has already been applied in many coal-fired power plants. Particulate matter and SO3 can both be removed by LLT-ESP. However, the removal performance of SO3 is relatively lower than that of particulate matter, which is caused by the condensation characteristics of SO3. In this paper, the condensation characteristics of SO3 were investigated on a simulated experimental system, and several measurement and characteristic methods were used to investigate mechanisms. After reducing the flue gas temperature with a heat exchanger, the size distribution of particulate matter, the mass concentration of SO3 on different sizes of particulate matter, as well as the microscopic morphology and elemental composition of particulate matter, were all experimentally studied. The results indicate that gaseous SO3 transformed into a liquid phase by heterogeneous or homogeneous condensation and then adhered to the surface of particulate matter through nucleation–condensation, collision–coalescence, and adsorption reactions. Furthermore, the removal efficiency of SO3 in LLT-ESP was also investigated under various conditions, such as ash concentration and flue gas temperature drop, suggesting that a higher ash concentration and a more significant temperature drop were beneficial for improving SO3 removal efficiency. Simulation and modeling of thermal recuperative incinerators may play an important role in enhancing efficiency and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. In this context, the primary objective of this study is to simulate and comprehensively understand the operation of a geometrically complex thermal recuperative incinerator with an integrated preheater featuring varying levels of heat recovery. To achieve this objective, a simple yet effective 0D model was developed. This modeling approach allows for a holistic evaluation of the performance of the incinerator, enabling the assessment of key parameters, such as temperatures and heat transfer rates, under varying operating conditions. Successful validation of the model is established by comparing its results with measurements from an industrial thermal recuperative incinerator in operation at a vehicle assembly plant, with maximum relative differences of around 9%. Simulations for different percentages of flue gases bypassing the preheater were conducted, indicating a good compromise between heat transfer and pressure drop and a 22% heat recovery at around 50%. The model presented in this paper provides a robust foundation for comprehensively assessing and optimizing the performance of thermal recuperative incinerators and systems that comprise thermal recuperative incinerators, with implications for waste management and sustainable energy recovery systems. Recent advancements in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) have triggered research in the field of heat exchangers. Driven by the need to decrease the size of heat exchangers, many researchers have exploited the higher heat transfer achieved by replacing single-phase flow systems with boiling counterparts. The concept of using mini-channels to provide compact heat exchangers while maintaining heat transfer performance is relatively new. A minimal number of researchers have reported simulations of water-steam systems in mini-channels. This paper presents a numerical study of the heat transfer performance (HTP) of mini channels in a water-steam system using the volume of fluid (VOF) model coupled with the Lee phase change model on commercial CFD software ANSYS. The numerical model consisted of a 1   mm   ×   1.5   mm   ×   52   mm channel with boundary conditions: top adiabatic; constant heat flux at the bottom surface; left/right periodic; mass flow inlet and pressure outlet. A mesh independence study was carried out for the proposed model, and simulations were validated against the experimental results of heat transfer versus vapor quality for a wide range of mass and heat fluxes. The VOF model best predicts experimental HTC at high mass fluxes, although the results at low mass fluxes were predicted with reasonable accuracy. For tumors wherein cancer cells remain in the tissue after colorectal cancer surgery, a hyperthermic anticancer agent is injected into the abdominal cavity to necrotize the remaining cancer cells with heat using a hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy system. However, during circulation, the processing temperature is out of range and the processing result is deteriorated. This paper proposes a look-up table (LUT) module design method that can stably maintain the processing temperature range during circulation via feedback. If the temperature decreases or increases, the LUT transmits a command signal to the heat exchanger to reduce or increase heat input, thereby maintaining the treatment temperature range. The command signal for increasing and decreasing heat input is Tp and Ta, respectively. The command signal for the treatment temperature range is Ts. If drug temperatures below 41 and above 43 °C are input to the LUT, it sends a Tp or Ta signal to the heat exchanger to increase or decrease the input heat, respectively. If the drug's temperature is 41–43 °C, the LUT generates a Ts signal and proceeds with the treatment. This paper presents a new in-situ experimental procedure for determining a thermal conductivity of soil, as one of the thermophysical properties necessary for dimensioning vertical buried heat exchangers of geothermal heat pumps. The proposed method, called the thermal recovery test, is based on the assumption that there is a direct analogy between the hydrodynamic process of filling (recovery) the well with water from a porous aquifer after its partial or complete discharging and the process of establishment of thermal equilibrium in an infinite medium previously disturbed by a line heat sink (source). Apart from presentation the theoretical background of these two phenomena, the display of the identical theoretical logarithmic character of the change of hydrostatic pressure and soil temperature, description of the experimental procedure, the experimental results of three performed experiments are also presented. Additionally, results for the experimentally obtained values of the thermal conductivity of the soil are compared with those obtained from the thermal response test, and the advantages and drawbacks of the new thermal recovery test method are analyzed. This paper reports the discovery that water can trigger a peculiar nuclear reaction and produce energy. Cavitation may induce unusual reactions through implosion of water vapor bubbles. Many of this research has been published formally or informally. We have conducted experiments using two reactor types made from multiple-pipe heat exchanger and found that the heat exchange process of water produces peculiar excess heat and abnormally high pressure leading to rupture of the reactor. Recently, we have tested another eight reactors. Interestingly, these reactors produce non-condensable gas. We suspected that they include 22Ne and CO2. We used a mass spectrometer (MS) to analyze 14 gas samples collected from 8 reactors, including ten samples showing a coefficient of performance COPx > 1.05 (with excess heat) and four having COPx < 1.05 (without excess heat). Several methods were adopted to identify the gas content. For CO2 identification, two methods are employed. For 22Ne identification, three methods are employed. All the results confirm that isotope 22Ne and regular CO2 really exist in the output gas from reactors determined to have excess heat. We conjecture a possible mechanism to produce 22Ne and CO2 and find out that 12C and isotope 17O are the intermediate. They finally form isotope gases containing 17O, including H2O-17 (heavy-oxygen water), isotope O2 (16O–17O), and isotope CO2 (12C–16O–17O). In the excess heat producing reactors, all these gasses were detected by MS in the absence of 20Ne and 21Ne. The observed isotope gases produced from reactors having excess heat verifies that water can trigger a peculiar nuclear reaction and produce energy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aiming at the problems of large delay and poor anti-disturbance ability in the outlet temperature control system of the heat exchanger to optimize the control accuracy of the system and improve the control performance, this paper proposes a control scheme combining predictive functional control with proportional-integral-derivative control. Using the incremental proportional-integral-derivative control algorithm to improve the optimization objective function of the predictive functional control algorithm, a predictive functional control optimization model with a proportional-integral-derivative structure is established. The feedforward compensation control is adopted to eliminate the influence of external disturbances on the heat exchanger temperature control system. Through simulation, the proposed control scheme is compared with the feedforward cascade compound control scheme based on a proportional-integral-derivative main controller. The results show that the scheme has a small over harmonic and strong anti-interference ability. Raman-based distributed temperature sensing (DTS) is a valuable tool for field testing and validating heat transfer models in borehole heat exchanger (BHE) and ground source heat pump (GSHP) applications. However, temperature uncertainty is rarely reported in the literature. In this paper, a new calibration method was proposed for single-ended DTS configurations, along with a method to remove fictitious temperature drifts due to ambient air variations. The methods were implemented for a distributed thermal response test (DTRT) case study in an 800 m deep coaxial BHE. The results show that the calibration method and temperature drift correction are robust and give adequate results, with a temperature uncertainty increasing non-linearly from about 0.4 K near the surface to about 1.7 K at 800 m. The temperature uncertainty is dominated by the uncertainty in the calibrated parameters for depths larger than 200 m. The paper also offers insights into thermal features observed during the DTRT, including a heat flux inversion along the borehole depth and the slow temperature homogenization under circulation. The efficiency of heat transfer in air-cooled heat exchangers of various industrial facilities depends on the flow rate of the coolant, its inlet temperature and ambient temperature. These parameters are transient and depend both on the features of the technological process and on weather conditions. One option for a compact design of heat exchangers is the use of close-packed coils with a small bending radius. In this case, heat transfer in the complex geometry of the annular space cannot be described by simple one-dimensional dependencies. To solve this problem, it is necessary to consider the three-dimensional spatial structure of the heat exchange surface. Since the size of the grid elements will be several orders of magnitude less than the size of the facility, the size of the computational grids for CFD modeling full-scale heat exchangers will be billions of finite volumes, and even on powerful supercomputers, the solution time will be about a month. One way to reduce computational costs is to use reduced order models, in which the computational domain is not modeled directly; instead, simplified models, such as a porous medium model, are used to describe it. However, such models require additional closing relations and coefficients that characterize the actual channel geometry. This paper presents a technique for creating a digital twin of a heat exchanger with small bend radius coils based on a porous medium model. The values of heat transfer coefficients and hydraulic resistance depend on the speed of air movement in the space between the coils. The calculated value of the thermal power obtained using the strengthened model was 529 kW, which corresponds to the passport data of 500 kW, with less than 6% deviation for the heat exchanger under study. This confirms the correctness of the calculation with accepted simplifications. The calculation time in this case was only a few minutes when using a personal computer. The developed numerical model allows for the resolution of performance characteristics based on the temperature of the cooled medium at the inlet, air temperature, and fan speed. Analyzing the different modes of turning on the cooling fans made it possible to determine the values of the thermal power when turning off the fans or reducing the number of revolutions. Shell and tube heat exchangers have great thermal stress due to the different fluid temperature and instability of the flow field. In this paper, based on the fluid physical model of shell and tube heat exchanger, the velocity field, pressure field and temperature field inside the heat exchanger are simulated and analyzed on Workbench platform. In this paper, the feasibility of two low global warming potential refrigerants R513A and R1234yf as alternatives to R134a was tested in an automotive air conditioning system in winter. The test results showed that the heating capacities of R513A and R1234yf were 2% and 4% lower than that of R134a, and their COP were 3-9% and 6-19% lower than that of R134a, respectively. It revealed that R513A can be used as a transition product to replace R134a, and R1234yf required further improvements to improve the energy efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study we evaluate a methodology for disaggregating land surface energy fluxes estimated with the Dual Time Difference (DTD) model which uses the day and night polar orbiting satellites observations of Land Surface Temperature (LST) as a remotely sensed input. The DTD model is run with MODIS input data at a spatial resolution of around 1 km while the disaggregation uses Landsat observations of LST to produce fluxes at a nominal spatial resolution of 30 m. The higher resolution modeled fluxes can be directly compared against eddy-covariance based flux tower measurements to ensure more accurate model validation and also provide a better visualization of fluxes' spatial patterns in heterogeneous areas allowing for development of, for example, more efficient irrigation practices. The disaggregation technique is evaluated in an area covered by the Danish Hydrological Observatory (HOBE), in the west of the Jutland peninsula, and the modeled fluxes are compared against measurements from two flux towers: first one in a heterogeneous agricultural landscape and second one in a homogeneous conifer plantation. The results indicate that the disaggregated fluxes have greatly improved accuracy as compared to high resolution fluxes derived directly with Landsat data without the disaggregation. At the agricultural site the disaggregated fluxes display negligible bias and almost perfect correlation (r > 0.90) with Eddy Covariance based measurements, while at the plantation site the results are encouraging but not ideal. In addition we introduce a modification to the DTD model by replacing the "parallel" configuration of the resistances to sensible heat exchange by the "series" configuration. Integrated whole-boiler process models are useful in the design of biomass and coal-fired boilers, and they can also be used to analyse different scenarios such as low load operation and alternate fuel firing. Whereas CFD models are typically applied to analyse the detail heat transfer phenomena in furnaces, analysis of the integrated whole-boiler performance requires one-dimensional thermofluid network models. These incorporate zero-dimensional furnace models combined with the solution of the fundamental mass, energy, and momentum balance equations for the different heat exchangers and fluid streams. This approach is not new, and there is a large amount of information available in textbooks and technical papers. However, the information is fragmented and incomplete and therefore difficult to follow and apply. The aim of this review paper is therefore to: (i) provide a review of recent literature to show how the different approaches to boiler modelling have been applied; (ii) to provide a review and clear description of the thermofluid network modelling methodology, including the simplifying assumptions and its implications; and (iii) to demonstrate the methodology by applying it to two case study boilers with different geometries, firing systems and fuels at various loads, and comparing the results to site measurements, which highlight important aspects of the methodology. The model results compare well with values obtained from site measurements and detail CFD models for full load and part load operation. The results show the importance of utilising the high particle load model for the effective emissivity and absorptivity of the flue gas and particle suspension rather than the standard model, especially in the case of a high ash fuel. The heat exchanger can use shallow geothermal energy to provide regional heating and cooling demand in winter and summer. In this paper, a large-scale public building is taken as the example, and the energy system in the building is taken as the research object. Firstly, through the collection of geothermal drilling geographic information and geothermal data, the geothermal reserves and geothermal recoverable resources are evaluated. Secondly, the cooling and heating demand of the building is calculated by using HVAC simulation software. Then, the heat transfer capacity of a single pile is evaluated and the lay-out scheme of the underground heat exchange pile foundation of the building is given. The actual heating effect of the heat exchange pile foundation system is explored, and the heat transfer characteristics of heat exchange pile foundation under different working conditions are compared and analyzed. This paper proposes an innovative method for time-series prediction in energy-intensive industrial systems characterized by highly dynamic non-linear operations. The proposed method can capture the true distributions of the inputs and outputs of such systems and map these distributions using polygon generation and video-to-video translation techniques. More specifically, the time-series data are represented as polygon streams (videos), then the video-to-video translation is used to transform the input polygon streams into the output ones. This transformation is tuned based on a model trustworthiness metric for optimal video synthesis. Finally, an image processing procedure is used for mapping the output polygon streams back to time-series outputs. The proposed method is based on cycle-consistent generative adversarial networks as an unsupervised approach. This does not need the heavy involvement of the human expert who devotes much effort to labeling the complex industrial data. The performance of the proposed method was validated successfully using a challenging industrial dataset collected from a complex heat exchanger network in a Canadian pulp mill. The results obtained using the proposed method demonstrate better performance than other comparable time-series prediction models.
