This study aims to analyze the formation of deliberative democracy in political education within the National Democratic Party (NasDem) of DKI Jakarta. By employing the concept of deliberative democracy, we argue that the NasDem Party of DKI Jakarta applies a democratic intersubjective dialogue process in decision-making regarding internal party political education. Although research on political education in general within political parties in Indonesia has been widely discussed, this paper complements previous studies by considering democratic inter-agent interactions and analyzing the discourse of deliberative democracy in political education within the NasDem Party of DKI Jakarta. Through qualitative exploration with descriptive case studies of two informants, field findings indicate that interactions in political education within the NasDem Party of DKI Jakarta are democratic in line with the party's ideological foundation, which guarantees internal democracy and promotes public democratization. Additionally, political parties also engage in empowering active members through participatory procedures and facilitate deliberative decisions in legitimizing internal political education from the village level to the provincial level. These findings contribute to an intra-party deliberative democracy model aimed at empowering members and offering a political public forum that prioritizes deliberation in influencing decisions. This paper examines the challenges of and facilitating strategies for linking disaster risk reduction (DRR) and climate change adaptation (CCA) in addressing urban floods, drawing from Indonesia's experience. The fragmentation between efforts to implement DRR and CCA leading to unnecessary duplication could increase confusion at both the community and wider governance levels and reduce the effectiveness of urban flood management. Through the lens of collaborative governance, this paper analyzes the barriers for integrating DRR and CCA and options to better align their practices in the context of a megapolitan city, Jakarta, Indonesia. The key findings of this study confirmed that institutional fragmentation, in concert with inconsistent facilitation and collaboration mechanisms, were the strongest barriers to aligning DRR and CCA action. The absence of accountable leadership was a key impediment for successful partnership-building processes to support political and technical collaboration. Leadership in these contexts plays an important role in (1) developing sustainable relationships, (2) convincing potential stakeholders to collaborate, (3) persuading partners to commit to sharing resources, and (4) agreeing/sharing a common vision of the partnership actions needed to mitigate harm and reduce urban vulnerability. These factors are critically important for reducing the direct and indirect impacts of flooding in Jakarta. Such lessons from Indonesia on linking DRR and CCA offer valuable insights to inform the development of policies and strategies to deal with urban floods for global cities faced with similar challenges. This paper provides a discussion about the conservation profession in the Jakarta area of Indonesia. The study, which uses descriptive and qualitative research, was conducted among three public, cultural institutions: a museum, a conservation center, and a library. These institutions were chosen because of their collection of ancient manuscripts and their employment of professional conservators. The study's findings show that conservators are concerned about the visibility of their profession in terms of lack of appreciation from the government as well as the status of their profession and that they believe they need professional associations and more comprehensive legal instruments to strengthen their profession's visibility and the public's opinion of them. This paper attempts to develop statistical modeling for air-conditioning analysis in Jakarta, Indonesia, during an emergency state of community activity restrictions enforcement (Emergency CARE), using a variety of parameters such as PM10, PM2.5, SO2, CO, O3, and NO2 from five IoT-based air monitoring systems. The parameters mentioned above are critical for assessing the air quality conditions and concentration of air pollutants. Outdoor air pollution concentration variations before and after the Emergency CARE, which was held in Indonesia during the COVID-19 pandemic on July 3-21, 2021, were studied. An air quality monitoring system based on the IoT generates sensor data that is collected from a government-integrated data portal, and that can be analyzed statistically. There are two main types of ANOVA (Analysis of Variance): one-way (or unidirectional) and two-way, which are applied to the collected sensor data and hypotheses calculated using ANOVA. ANOVA one-way was found to be more effective for analyzing air quality condition data. During emergency CARE, the average concentrations of PM10, PM2.5, and O3 from the air quality monitoring system show values that have exceeded the standard Air Quality Index (AQI), while the concentrations of CO, NO2, and SO2 are still below the applicable AQI values. This research is among the first pieces of work to use the comprehensive school safety (CSS) framework to assess the impacts of floods on quality learning and education infrastructure. The CSS framework is employed here to identify the level of disruption to education services following floods in Jakarta, Indonesia, in 2013. The paper poses three key questions, concerning: (i) disruption to children's access to quality education during the flood emergency in 2013 and the early recovery phase; (ii) the impact of the floods on a school's physical infrastructure; and (iii) the effectiveness and level of success of the 2013 flood responses by relevant stakeholders. Combining quantitative and qualitative strategies, the paper examines the experiences of 100 schools in Jakarta. The findings suggest that the CSS framework offers a more nuanced approach to assessing post‐disaster education needs. Business environment reform targets inadequate business regulations, intending to remove constraints to business investment, enabling growth and job creation, and creating opportunities for international business to contribute to and benefit from this growth. Women-led businesses are likely to be disproportionately negatively affected by a poor business environment. However, there is a dearth of context-specific knowledge of the impact of business environment reform on gender equality. This paper offers new insights into this relationship through an in-depth analysis of the Pelayanan Terpadu Satu Pintu (PTSP) or one-stop shop business licencing reform in 2009, exploiting the variation in the extent of its implementation to examine how the effects vary, focussing on the gender of firm leadership. Our findings suggest that the reform is unlikely to have led to either unintended negative consequences for women-led firms, nor do we find any evidence of transformational change. Outside Jakarta, advances for women were achieved, while in Jakarta existing exclusions were maintained and arguably deepened. Stronger gender and inclusion outcomes would require further deepening and expanding the positive achievements identified, including general business environment improvements coupled with targeted support for sectors. Under the designation "platform urbanism," there is growing scholarly recognition that platform intermediaries are reconfiguring urban industries, processes, and relationships through the collection and manipulation of big data. Central to realizing this economic project is financial speculation on platforms' ability to coordinate network effects—a phenomenon in which the more users there are in a networked system, the more valuable and useful it becomes. In this paper, I argue that while the existing literature recognizes the importance of network effects, it has also adopted a limited conceptualization that understands platform firms as the primary agents generating and capturing the economic benefits of network effects. Drawing on 12 months of ethnographic fieldwork in Greater Jakarta, Indonesia, I work to expand this understanding through attention to the social lives of network effects—the ways in which platform architectures are always embedded in social relations created and sustained in everyday urban life. I show how ride-hailing drivers have attempted to mitigate the risks of their work through building socio-technical networks of their own, for their own purposes. Doing so reveals that it is not only platform firms and venture capital that speculate on network effects; rather, a range of actors in the city-region seek to tap into driver networks to advance their own social, political, and economic ends. In conclusion, I suggest that attending to these practices opens up space to reframe platform urbanism beyond its current preoccupation with macro political economic analyses, while also establishing new lines of inquiry for "speculative urbanism." The development of information technologies and the massive generation of data in today's digital world provides new opportunities for official statistics. Big data, especially produced by a marketplace have a great potential to produce a list of online shops. The aim of this paper is to develop an online shop sampling frame from marketplace data. Using the shop and item datasets, an item-level data algorithm is developed to determine whether a shop is active or not to be included in the frame. In this study, the focus is for online shops in Jakarta Province, Indonesia. The algorithm is built using divide and conquer principle and statistical method. The frame produced consists of 13 attributes such as Shop ID, number of items, annual revenue, shop types, Business scale classification and the location (URL and physical address). Background: Facial skin characteristics and appearance vary according to ethnicity. While much of this knowledge is derived from the Caucasian population, lately there have been efforts to gain such understanding in various regions in Asia. In this paper, we have built an understanding of such features in Indonesia. In Indonesia, a section of females wears a traditional veil (hijab) to cover the scalp and part of face. The influence of the hijab on facial skin attributes was also investigated. Methods: In a cross‐sectional observational study design involving 419 female volunteers in Jakarta, Indonesia, facial skin attributes (colour, radiance, hydration, trans‐epidermal water loss [TEWL], wrinkles, fine lines, pores, and sebum levels) and conditions (melasma, post‐inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), solar lentigines/ senile lentigines, seborrheic keratoses and acne) were assessed by trained operators and dermatologists using standard validated instruments and scales. Results: With age, facial skin colour showed darkening in cheek; forehead on the other hand showed slight lightening. The skin evenness and radiance decreased, substantially. Aging attributes measured in terms of lines, wrinkles, and under‐eye dark circles showed deterioration with age; the decline was progressively faster than colour change. Facial image data analysis corroborated these findings. Skin hydration remained similar across the age groups even though the skin barrier function measured in terms of TEWL improved with age. Sebum levels in the skin were similar up to the age of 50 but declined in the next group of 50–60 year. Pore severity increased with age. Melasma, seborrheic keratosis and PIH showed a high prevalence (>∼50%) at the young age group (20–30 years), itself. Melasma prevalence attained 100% in the age group of 41–50 year and onwards, and its severity similarly showed a steady rise with age. PIH on the other hand showed a steady decline with age. Solar lentigines prevalence (∼30%) did not change much across age groups, and the severity scores were similar in age groups up to 50 year but increased substantially in 51–60‐year age groups. Seborrheic keratosis was similar (∼47%) in age groups up 20–40 year but steadily increased in upper age groups. Its severity was similar in the age groups of 20–30 year and 31–40 year but showed a two‐fold increase in subsequent age groups. Acne was 10% in the age group of 20–30 year and declined gradually to 0.7% in the 51–60‐year age group. Hijab wearers showed slight protection in skin colour darkening and improvement of evenness and radiance but were similar on aging (fine lines and wrinkles on crow's feet, under eye and peri‐oral areas) markers to non‐wearers. In general, in majority of age‐groups, hijab wearers showed a higher prevalence of melasma, solar/senile lentigines, seborrheic keratosis and PIH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research on the interaction between the Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) and rainfall around Jakarta is limited, although the influence of the MJO on increased rainfall is acknowledged as one of the primary causes of flooding in the region. This paper investigates the local rainfall response around Jakarta to the MJO. We used C-band Doppler radar in October–April during 2009–12 to study rain-rate characteristics at much higher resolution than previous analyses. Results show that the MJO strongly modulates rain rates over the region; however, its effect varies depending on topography. During active phases, MJO induces a high rain rate over the ocean and coast, meanwhile during suppressed phases, it generates a high rain rate mainly over the mountains. In phase 2 of the MJO we find the strongest increase in mean and extreme rain rate, which is earlier in the MJO cycle than most studies reported, based on lower-resolution data. This higher rain rate is likely due to increases in convective and stratiform activities. The MJO promotes more stratiform rain once it resides over Indonesia. In phase 5, over the northwestern coast and western part of the radar domain, the MJO might bring forward the peak of the hourly rain rate that occurs in the early morning. This is likely due to a strong westerly flow arising from MJO superimposed westerly monsoonal flow, blocked by the mountains, inducing a strong wind propagating offshore resulting in convection near the coast in the morning. Our study demonstrates the benefits of using high-resolution radar for capturing local responses to the larger-scale forcing of the MJO in Indonesia. Significance Statement: Rainfall in Jakarta and its surroundings is highly variable and often heavy resulting in devastating floods. In this region, in the wet season, rainfall is influenced by large-scale climate variability including the Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) characterized by eastward propagation of clouds near the equatorial regions on intraseasonal time scales. The MJO has been known to increase the probability of rainfall occurrence and its magnitude, but we show that the impact differs in varying topography. The frequency and intensity of rainfall increase over land areas including mountains even when MJO has not arrived in Indonesia. Meanwhile, once MJO moves through Indonesia, the frequency and magnitude of the rainfall increases over the northern coast and ocean as well as in the west of the radar domain. This paper examines the importance of legacy as a hidden agenda behind the ambitions and haste attitude of Indonesian state leaders in relocating the capital. It also elucidates the institutional mechanisms employed to achieve this lofty goal. In 2019, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) issued a controversial declaration on the relocation of Indonesia's capital city from Jakarta to Kalimantan Island. Despite the protracted COVID-19 pandemic and the prevailing global economic and geopolitical uncertainties, he marshalled all necessary means and resources under his command to ensure the capital megaproject could commence and the inauguration could be held before his presidential tenure ends in 2024. As formal and technical arguments for Indonesia's capital relocation have been criticised for inconsistencies, a comprehensive understanding of the real phenomenon necessitates an exploration of the hidden agendas behind this unpopular move. The argument posits that the new capital city serves as a megaproject legacy, signified by the construction of monumental and iconic buildings and structures that will reflect the enduring power and memories of the politicians. Urban resilience to natural disasters (e.g., flooding), in the context of climate change, has been becoming increasingly important for the sustainable development of cities. This paper presents a method to assess the urban resilience to flooding in terms of the recovery rate of different subdistricts in a city using all-weather synthetic aperture radar imagery (i.e., Sentinel-1A imagery). The factors that influence resilience, and their relative importance, are then determined through principal component analysis. Jakarta, a flood-prone city in Indonesia, is selected as a case study. The resilience of 42 subdistricts in Jakarta, with their gross domestic product data super-resolved using nighttime-light satellite images, was assessed. The association between resilience levels and influencing factors, such as topology, mixtures of religion, and points-of-interest density, were subsequently derived. Topographic factors, such as elevation (coefficient = 0.3784) and slope (coefficient = 0.1079), were found to have the strongest positive influence on flood recovery, whereas population density (coefficient = −0.1774) a negative effect. These findings provide evidence for policymakers to make more pertinent strategies to improve flood resilience, especially in subdistricts with lower resilience levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been a global disaster, with over 746,312 confirmed cases and still counting in Indonesia, especially Jakarta, which has about 50 per cent asymptomatic confirmed cases. This paper aims to investigate the persistent factors of COVID-19 diagnosis using four scenarios of asymptomatic inclusion. We use Bayesian Logistic Regression to identify the factors of COVID-19 positivity, which can address issues in the traditional approach such as overfitting and uncertainty. This study discovers three main findings: (1) COVID-19 can infect people regardless of age; (2) Among twelve symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19), five symptoms increase the COVID-19 likelihood, and two symptoms decrease the possibility of COVID-19 infection; and (3) From an epidemiological perspective, the contact history rises the probability of COVID-19, while healthcare workers and people who did travel are less likely to become infected from COVID-19. Therefore given this study, it is essential to be attentive to the people who have the symptoms and contact history. Surprisingly, health care workers and travelers who apply health protocols strictly according to the rules have a low risk of COVID19 infection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Despite the rise of stimulant use, most harm reduction programs still focus on people who inject opioids, leaving many people who use methamphetamine (PWUM) underserviced. In Asia, especially, where methamphetamine prevalence has overtaken opioids prevalence, harm reduction programs assisting PWUM are rare. The few existing innovative practices focusing on methamphetamine use lie underreported. Understanding how these programs moved their focus from opiates to methamphetamine could help inspire new harm reduction responses. Hence, this paper analyzes a newly implemented outreach program assisting methamphetamine users in Jakarta, Indonesia. It addresses the program's critical learning points when making the transition to respond to stimulant use. Methods: This case study is part of a more extensive research on good practices of harm reduction for stimulant use. For this case study, data was collected through Indonesian contextual documents and documents from the program, structured questionnaire, in-depth interviews with service staff and service users, a focus group discussion with service users, and in-loco observations of activities. For this paper, data was reinterpreted to focus on the key topics that needed to be addressed when the program transitioned from working with people who use opioids to PWUM. Results: Four key topics were found: (1) getting in touch with different types of PWUM and building trust relationships; (2) adapting safer smoking kits to local circumstances; (3) reframing partnerships while finding ways to address mental health issues; and (4) responding to local law enforcement practices. Conclusions: The meaningful involvement of PWUM was essential in the development and evaluation of outreach work, the planning, and the adaptation of safer smoking kits to local circumstances. Also, it helped to gain understanding of the broader needs of PWUM, including mental health care and their difficulties related to law enforcement activities. Operating under a broad harm reduction definition and addressing a broad spectrum of individual and social needs are preferable to focusing solely on specific interventions and supplies for safer drug use. Since many PWUM smoke rather than inject, securing funding for harm reduction focused on people who do not inject drugs and/or who do not use opioids is fundamental in keeping programs sustainable. Although many megacities in developing countries experience floods annually that affect a large number of people, relatively few empirical studies have evaluated the associated costs. This paper estimates such costs by conducting a hedonic price analysis—providing evidence regarding the impacts of floods on the housing market. A robust regression technique on a simple linear transformation model, and a maximum likelihood estimation technique on the spatial lag version of the simple linear transformation model, are utilised to estimate the correlation between the level of the 2007 floods and monthly housing rental prices in Jakarta, Indonesia. This paper sheds light on the fact that in developing countries' megacities, the total cost of floods among households is significantly lower compared to the total amount of funding needed to permanently eliminate floods in these megacities. Special Care Dentistry (SCD) or Special Needs Dentistry is a branch of dentistry concerned with the oral health of people with a variety of medical conditions or limitations that require more than routine delivery of care. There were reports on oral status of special care patients and special interest group for SCD dentists in Indonesia has existed. However, there was not perception report on SCD amongst dentists in Jakarta. This paper will describe the perception of dentists in Jakarta towards SCD. A cross-sectional questionnaire, translated and cross adapted to Indonesian, was distributed online through Whatsapp to dentists registered in Jakarta late 2019. Quantitative data was analyzed using statistical software for proportion and correlation using Chi-Square test. The questionnaire explored dentists' perception towards SCD. A total of 250 dentists participated in this study, of them 173 general practitioners and 77 specialist dentists. Most respondents reported that they did not have SCD component during undergraduate dental school and did not provide treatment to patients with special needs in their clinical practice. Most respondents have poor perception of SCD, however, most of the respondents showed motivation and interest towards SCD training. Dentists in Jakarta involved in this study had poor perception of SCD. More efforts should be performed to improve SCD education and awareness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As a country with a diversity of languages, religions, ethnicities and cultures, Indonesia is particularly vulnerable to the hostile play of identity politics. Lies produced during the Post-Truth period exploit many emotional sentiments and provoke interest groups to act based on primordial impulses that support certain political interests. The negative turbulence related to identity politics due to the chaotic circulation of hoaxes and misinformation is feared to lead to a Post-Democratic situation. Taking the case study of the two most influential elections in Indonesia: the 2017 Jakarta provincial election and the 2019 presidential election, this paper will explore how the Post-Truth phenomenon incorporates the issue of identity politics to generate a Post-Democratic situation in Indonesia. Secondary data analysis from the news and social media will be employed to further explain how identity politics is distorted in the media, and how it can generate social and political turbulence. • Toll road travel time and costs can affect residential location choice and travel behaviour. • Travel characteristics and socio-economic background play a role in demand to travel via the toll road. • Residential self-selection affects mode-route choice. • High-income respondents and car users were found to be the most sensitive toward increased travel costs. This paper provides insight into how variations in Level of Service (LoS) of a toll road, socio-economic attributes, and latent factors simultaneously affect residential location, route, and mode choices across population segments in the Jakarta – Bandung region in Indonesia. Three discrete choice models were developed based on a stated-revealed preference survey on residential location, route, and mode choices. Our analysis shows that toll road usage affects both residential location preferences and travel behaviour. This influence varies across income groups and used travel mode and also depends on trip characteristics. Overall, the respondents in our survey prefer toll road options, as also shown by positive attitudes towards the toll road, except for low-income respondents and bus users. Furthermore, we found a significant association between residential location preference and route and mode choices for frequent users of the toll road, low-income respondents and residents who live close to the toll road. It means that self-selection exists between residential location choice and mode-route choice, and it is linked to the distance to the toll gate and frequency of using the toll road. Academic libraries are one of the vital institutions that collect and manage the intellectual and cultural output of human beings, both in print and digital forms. Along with the growth of digital collections, the threats to or vulnerability of those collections are also increasing. This paper aims to describe the digital disaster preparedness measures implemented by respondent academic libraries in Indonesia that participated in the study. The study was conducted in Jakarta, Indonesia. The finding shows that even though libraries have taken steps to protect their digital data and collections, most of the libraries that participated in this study do not have a written digital disaster preparedness policy and had never conducted a risk analysis of the potential for digital disasters in their institutions. This paper traces the interplay of spatially, socially and legally juxtaposed differences between different groups of Indonesia's residents: (1) a group of riverbank settlers in Jakarta, (2) political decision-makers and urban planners that evict this particular riverbank settlement and (3) a group of Jakartan academics, architects and journalists that got involved in these interventions. The dynamics between and within these groups are examined through a case study in a riverbank settlement, where inhabitants are not only at risk of regular flooding but also of evictions. The analysis combines the notion of juxtapositions with a 'revelatory approach' towards disaster. The notion of juxtapositions makes clear how urban divides are shaped, and how they, in turn, produce ideas and practices of citizenship in Jakarta. The revelatory approach to disasters helps to show that floods can function as an accelerator to both reinforce and challenge these juxtapositions, thus also changing citizenship ideas and practices. The analysis reveals on the one hand that floods and interventions deepen socio-economic inequalities in an already highly unequal city. However, on the other hand, they also trigger collective mobilisation of evictees as well as unprecedented cooperation between this particular group of riverbank settlers and more resourceful members of Jakarta's wider society. Jakarta has long been a prime destination for migrants across the ethnically diverse Indonesian archipelago. Using qualitative insights from fieldwork and data from the 2010 Census, this paper examines patterns and drivers of ethnic intermarriage in Jakarta. Jakarta has the highest rate of interethnic marriage in Indonesia (33%). Among married adults aged 20–39, recent migrants have a notably lower likelihood of intermarriage than non-migrants and non-recent migrants. Fieldwork findings suggest that despite the decline in the practice of arranged marriage, third party influence and broader social structures continue to influence individuals' preferences on who they should and should not marry. The popular notion that marriage signifies the union of two families reflects the unrelenting influence of parents and kinship networks in family formation decisions, and in contributing to a norm of ethnic assortative mating. Studying ethnic intermarriage in one of the world's largest metropolises contributes to two growing strands of scholarship in social demography: the literature on assortative mating in multi-ethnic developing societies, and the literature on marriage transitions in Asia. Most studies on Muslim youth in post-New Order Indonesia have concentrated on those who are affiliated with global Islamist movements. Such studies overlook another spectrum of Muslim youth, those who engage with traditionalist Muslim groups. This article analyses the growing popularity of Hadhrami Arab preachers among urban Muslim youth in contemporary Indonesia. The preachers who claim descent from the Prophet are popularly called habib (sing.) or habaib (pl.). Inheriting holy blood from the Prophet, habaib have enjoyed a special status and respect among Indonesian Muslims, especially traditionalist ones. This study focuses on the late Habib Munzir al-Musawa and his sermon group (majelis taklim), the Majelis Rasulullah (The Prophet's Assembly), as well as his young followers in Jakarta. The Majelis Rasulullah is arguably the most popular sermon group in Indonesia and has attracted tens of thousands of people to its public preaching events. Seeking to explain its popularity, this study considers the views and experiences of Habib Munzir's young followers concerning their participation and activism within the group. It explores both structural and cultural factors that drive urban Muslim youths to participate in the sermon group. Borrowing Bayat's perspective on Muslim youth and leisure, the paper argues that Indonesian Muslims participate in the habaib sermon groups not only for spiritual shelter but also because they see them as sites where they can express both their piety and their 'youthfulness' in the midst of uncertainty, discontent, and limited spaces for expressing themselves in Jakarta. The combination of rapid economic growth and urbanization, market dependency for food purchases, disposal of a significant portion of income to obtain food, and diverse dietary needs increase an urban household's vulnerability to food insecurity. Hence, it is crucial to focus on urban food insecurity. Achieving urban food security is one of the development challenges in the twenty first century in most developing countries, including Indonesia. To examine this issue, a survey was conducted in Jakarta, Bandung, and Surabaya. The experience-based food security scale was adapted to measure the food security status in the study area. This scale assesses food insecurity over a 12-month recall period. This study aims to explore the food insecurity status and examine the factors that affect urban food insecurity of low-income households in three megacities. The random sampling technique was applied to collected data from 150 households of selected residential areas through paper-based questionnaire survey. Subsequently, the Rasch model was used to measure the food security status, finding that 27.4% of the participants were food insecure. A binary logistic regression was employed to identify main factors that influence the low-income urban household's food security status in the study area. The significant predictors of urban food insecurity were also identified, including income, employment status, dependency ratio, a respondent's urbanization status, and home ownership status. Therefore, an effective cross-sectoral policy intervention monitoring is needed to cope with the food insecurity issue both in regional and national levels of the country. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Approximately 70% of the global burden of dengue disease occurs on the Asian continent, where many large urban centres provide optimal environments for sustained endemic transmission and periodic epidemic cycles. Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, is a densely populated megacity with hyperendemic dengue transmission. Characterization of the spatiotemporal distribution of dengue transmission intensity is of key importance for optimal implementation of novel control and prevention programmes, including vaccination. In this paper we use mathematical models to provide the first detailed description of spatial and temporal variability in dengue transmission intensity in Jakarta. Methodology/Principal findings: We applied catalytic models in a Bayesian framework to age-stratified dengue case notification data to estimate dengue force of infection and reporting probabilities in 42 subdistricts of Jakarta. The model was fitted to yearly and average annual data covering a 10-year period between 2008 and 2017. We estimated a long-term average annual transmission intensity of 0.130 (95%CrI: 0.129–0.131) per year in Jakarta province, ranging from 0.090 (95%CrI: 0.077–0.103) to 0.164 (95%CrI: 0.153–0.174) across subdistricts. Annual average transmission intensity in Jakarta province during the 10-year period ranged from 0.012 (95%CrI: 0.011–0.013) in 2017 to 0.124 (95%CrI: 0.121–0.128) in 2016. Conclusions/Significance: While the absolute number of dengue case notifications cannot be relied upon as a measure of endemicity, the age-distribution of reported dengue cases provides valuable insights into the underlying nature of transmission. Our estimates from yearly and average annual case notification data represent the first detailed estimates of dengue transmission intensity in Jakarta's subdistricts. These will be important to consider when assessing the population-level impact and cost-effectiveness of potential control and prevention programmes in Jakarta province, such as the controlled release of Wolbachia-carrying mosquitoes and vaccination. Adopting Arabic clothing styles and in other ways mimicking Saudi Arabian cultural practice is one of the defining characteristics of the Indonesian tarbiyah (Islamic education) movement and the more general influence of Saudi Arabian Wahhabism and other forms of Middle Eastern style Salafism that has emerged in Indonesia since the early 1980s. This paper includes a translation of and extended commentary on a short story by Professor Komaruddin Hidayat of Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University in Jakarta that is highly critical of this trend. This is a counter narrative that references two Indonesian national heroes: Kyai Hasyim Asy'ari (1875-1947) one of the founders of Nahdatul Ulama, the country's largest Muslim organization and Mohammad Hatta (1902-1980), the first Vice President. Professor Hidayat uses a short story to make the point that Islamic authenticity need not be based on the emulation of Saudi Arabian cultural practices and that Islam, Indonesian cultures, and nationalism are entirely compatible. The research on herpetofauna to be used as traditional medicine are still few compared to research on medicinal plants, especially in Indonesia. This paper discusses the characteristics of traders and consumers of medicine that derived from herpetofauna and also examines the perceptions of traders and consumers on herpetofauna conservation and their use as medicine. To compare whether there are different perceptions between consumers in Jakarta and Bandung, the Chi square test was used; and to find out whether there are influence of education and age on respondents' perceptions, the Spearman test was used. The results showed that most traders were dominated by men of productive age with a relatively low level of education. The traders are mostly Moslem, and originated from Betawi and Sundanese. Most traders have been in the business for more than 20 years.The consumers are also dominated by men and fairly even between Moslems and non Moslems. Consumers are generally Chinese and most of them are aged 35-39. The level of education of consumers is higher than the traders. No significant differences were found regarding the perception of traders and consumers in the two cities. There is a significant positive correlation between education level and perceptions regarding animal use regulations and animal protection regulations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper discusses how 'ulama perempuan' (Female Muslim woman clerics) use religious sources particularly, Qur'an, in their expression of moral movement as seen in media. It also contends that they try to make identity and sense of belonging by inviting themselves and others to participate in improving the wellbeing and cohesion of Indonesia as the nation. Using a descriptiveanalytic method, the study questions about the factors that have made it possible for some Indonesian ulama perempuan to propose a different view, and what do their movement represent in terms of nationalism? In answering them, the study relies its data on their recommendations both at KUPI (Kongres Ulama Perempuan Indonesia), April 25-27, 2017, Cirebon, West Java, and press release presented at Istiqlal Mosque, Jakarta on March 1, 2018, as well as two other recommendations that follow. The study finds that 'ulama perempuan' have made an alternative voice using some of religious sources (the Qur'an) and secular ones through their moral movements in improving the status and role of women, the well beings of children, and environment sustainability. Their movement attracts other agents particularly that of media to magnify the voice and make the movement gear as strong alternative message of soft nationalism. Internationalization and economic globalization cause diversity in organizations to be higher, thus requiring a diversity management approach. This quantitative study aims to analyze the effect of diversity management on organizational trust, employee innovative behavior, and employee engagement. Data were collected using a questionnaire involving 115 employees of a large private bank in Jakarta, Indonesia. Analysis of research data using structural equation modeling (SEM) with SmartPLS software. The results showed that diversity management has a positive effect on organizational trust, employee innovative behavior, and employee engagement. Organizational trust has a positive effect on employee innovative behavior and employee engagement. Organizational trust mediates the effect of diversity management on employee innovative behavior and employee engagement. Diversity management is very important for organizations today because it can promote organizational trust, create employee innovative behavior and strengthen employee engagement, so every organization needs to establish policies regarding diversity management practices and consistently make it happen. Pasar Baru is a shopping arcade that still retains some of its colonial legacy in a vastly changing city space of Jakarta. Originating from a Chinese settlement area, this shopping arcade has survived the worst anti-Chinese riots in Jakarta, in 1998. This paper examines the complex way space and identity has been constructed and negotiated in this site since the colonial period. This paper shows that the Dutch-made cosmopolitan hybrid modernity actually offers a (partial) solution to multi-ethnic urban society, while the spatial and social segregation based on race, class and religion, a postcolonial legacy, which is now the trend of the spatial development in Jakarta, actually aggravates the inter-group conflict in the metropolis. This paper examines historical patterns of transport and land use development in Jakarta with a view to understanding the larger meaning of development in this context. The paper uses archival analysis and policy interviews to trace theories and practices of national and urban development from the late colonial period to the mid 1990s. Apparent continuities in the development of major roads, goods movement corridors and spaces of flows are investigated in relation to claims of fundamental policy and social change across this period. Additionally, shifts in the provision of public transport and pedestrian facilities are investigated in terms of wider processes of social contestation and resolution. The analysis highlights the connection between transport and land use policies and wider economic, political and social imaginaries. It also suggests that, despite the appearance of fundamental ideological change and social upheaval, there are continuities in development that suggest the maintenance of social relations within Jakarta. Rapid urban development and globalisation have brought dynamic changes to large cities in the developing countries. Yet understanding of the changes has been handicapped by the lack of data and systematic attempts. By using the latest release of land-value data in Jakarta, this paper provides insights into the spatial structure of land values in a typical Third World metropolis. Land values vary drastically from one kelurahan to another, with most of the expensive land parcels in central Jakarta. However, in central Jakarta one could also easily find cheap land parcels whose values were lower than the lowest land values of some parcels in non-central regions of the city, reflecting the mixture of slums and skyscrapers in central Jakarta. Land values were not distributed evenly in the non-central regions. Rather, they were more expensive in west and south Jakarta than in north and east Jakarta. Spatial variables, especially distance to the central business district, were important in shaping land-value patterns in Jakarta, but the explanatory power of distance declined over time. The findings of this paper will not only be useful for an understanding of spatial land-value patterns in Asian cities, but will also be beneficial for investors and policy-makers in their decision-making processes. In 2010 a national team (Team 9) developed the hazard curve and maximum considered earthquake (MCE) for the whole Indonesian area. The results were further applied in this study. Risk-targeted ground motions (RTGM) with 1% probability of building collapse in 50 years were developed by integrating the hazard curve with the structural capacity distribution. Parametric study on various variables that affect the log-normal standard deviation suggests a value of 0.7. In the effort to obtain the RTGM for the whole Indonesian region, integration was carried out using definite integration in which the curves are split into thin vertical strips and the areas below each curve are multiplied and summed. Detailed procedures and verification are given in this paper. An example of RTGM calculation was carried out for Jakarta City and then applied to the whole Indonesian region. Risk coefficients defining the ratio between RTGM and MCE were eventually developed and mapped. Risk coefficient development was generated for two periods of interest, i.e. a short time period (T = 0.2 seconds) and a 1-second period, respectively. Based on the results, for the period of 1.0 seconds 55% of Indonesian cities/districts have a risk coefficient in the range of 0.9 to 1.1 and about 37% in the range of 0.7 to 0.9, with only 5% in the range of 1.1 to 1.25. A majority of Jakarta's population resides in unregulated and densely populated settlements called kampung, with no access to utilities. The urban development policy of previous municipal governments focused strongly on modernization of the city to the neglect of the poor kampung population. The Kampung Improvement Programme, started in 1969, is considered a notable exception to this tendency. However, despite efforts to improve the conditions in kampung, the number of kampung dwellers is increasing. The governor of Jakarta aims to revitalize 350 kampung in his first term of office (by 2017). This paper investigates whether the land readjustment procedure that is applied in many countries may contribute to the realization of this ambition. Jakarta, Indonesia's primate city and the world's second largest urban agglomeration, is undergoing a deep transformation. A fresh city profile of Jakarta is long overdue, given that there have been major events and developments since the turn of the millennium (the Asian Financial crisis and decentralisation in Indonesia, among the most important), as well as the fact that the city is a living entity with its own processes to be examined. The inhabitants of the city have also taken centre stage now in these urban processes, including the recent pandemic COVID-19 response. Our paper profiles Jakarta heuristically in two cuts: presenting the city from conventional and academic perspectives of megacities like it, which includes contending with its negative perceptions, and more originally, observing the city from below by paying attention to the viewpoints of citizens and practitioners of the city. This paper argues that the ideas of self, waste and space are interconnected and that they influence each other in a society's everyday life. It addresses the issues of belonging and identity to explain how the connection among self, waste and space could determine waste disposal practice. A study in a low-income urban neighbourhood in Jakarta, Indonesia, illustrates how the waste disposal practice in everyday life could be understood in terms of how they are connected to the actors and to the space. The connection among self, waste and space is illustrated through various waste disposal practices in spaces with various degrees of ownership. Waste disposal practices in shared spaces are particularly problematic since these practices occur in the spaces with unclear ownership and unclear boundaries. The findings suggest the need to take into account the understanding of ownership towards waste (‘whose waste?’) as a key aspect in comprehending waste disposal practice in the urban context. As millions of urban residents in the majority world attain middle-class status, there is not only a great deal of ambiguity as to what exactly being middle class is, but also an occlusion of many efforts residents themselves have made to attain this status. Because multiple routes have been pursued to improve livelihoods, as well as different conditions and support, there is also a growing ambivalence about the various implications of this attainment. At times, the performance of such status seems to require relinquishing important livelihood practices. While availed of increased consumption, assets and relative autonomy, many such residents are wary of the heightened vulnerabilities that new forms of livelihood and individuation posit. As increased accumulation has been predicated on both the changing global positions of national production systems and the long-term incremental efforts of residents themselves, how the divergent implications of these distinct routes to middle-class status are negotiated on a day-to-day basis are critical issues for the elaboration of urban politics. Focusing on Jakarta, the paper considers some of the ways in which an emergent middle class have improved livelihoods and opportunities, as well as how they hedge their bets in the pursuit of lifestyles and norms conventionally associated with middle-class status. Abstract: Jakarta is the capital of Indonesia. It is one of the largest cities with an around 10 million population as for 2010, covering an area of about 661 square kilometers. The land subsidence phenomena in several areas of Jakarta are well known for many years. Land subsidence does damage infrastructures in the city; therefore, it has to be closely monitored and analysed. In this paper, the authors have demonstrated the capability of the PALSAR sensor aboard the Japanese ALOS satellite for large-scale mapping of land subsidence in Jakarta. Mapping results were produced from 17 ALOS PALSAR L-band radar images using persistent scatterer radar interferometry (PSI). The GEOS-PSI software, developed by the Geodesy and Earth Observing Systems group at UNSW for PSI analysis, was used to detect and map those land subsidence. The results showed that the land in the area of Jakarta was deforming at different rates across several zones. The land subsidence measured from ALOS PALSAR imagery were cross-examined with the subsidence values obtained from 4 GPS campaign surveys by the authors at 19 stations between 2007 and 2010. The magnitudes and trends of the deformation obtained from both techniques agreed well in general for those pinpoints of GPS. After the removal of 2 suspected outliers in GPS measurements, the subsidence rate difference between the two techniques range from −29 to 6mm/year, with a standard deviation of 9mm/year and an average absolute difference of 8mm/year. This research has suggested that PSI with L-band ALOS PALSAR data can be a promising technique to complement the GPS surveying for monitoring land subsidence in super large cities like Jakarta. The current interest in the 'clean and green' that has become part of urban governmentality in Indonesia's metropolis is illustrative of the practice of becoming a citizen of Jakarta today. The ongoing demand to reclaim and produce green space, however, entails the displacement of those who are considered to be blocking the success of urban green initiatives. This paper points to ways in which contemporary forms of power are built on the premise that a green environment requires individuals to reconfigure themselves to gain social legitimacy.
