Single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) are advanced sensors capable of detecting individual photons and recording their arrival times with picosecond resolution using time-correlated Single-Photon Counting detection techniques. They are used in various applications, such as LiDAR, and can capture high-speed sequences of binary single-photon images, offering great potential for reconstructing 3D environments with high motion dynamics. To complement single-photon data, they are often paired with conventional passive cameras, which capture high-resolution (HR) intensity images at a lower frame rate. However, 3D reconstruction from SPAD data faces challenges. Aggregating multiple binary measurements improves precision and reduces noise but can cause motion blur in dynamic scenes. Additionally, SPAD arrays often have lower resolution than passive cameras. To address these issues, we propose a novel computational imaging algorithm to improve the 3D reconstruction of moving scenes from SPAD data by addressing the motion blur and increasing the native spatial resolution. We adopt a plug-and-play approach within an optimization scheme alternating between guided video super-resolution of the 3D scene, and precise image realignment using optical flow. Experiments on synthetic data show significantly improved image resolutions across various signal-to-noise ratios and photon levels. We validate our method using real-world SPAD measurements on three practical situations with dynamic objects. First on fast-moving scenes in laboratory conditions at short range; second very low resolution imaging of people with a consumer-grade SPAD sensor from STMicroelectronics; and finally, HR imaging of people walking outdoors in daylight at a range of 325 meters under eye-safe illumination conditions using a short-wave infrared SPAD camera. Under Partial shading conditions (PSC), traditional MPPT methods such as, P&O, IncCon and SMC, cannot track down the Global MPP. Thus, the energy conversion of the PV modules will decrease. To overcome this drawback, two evolutionary algorithms; PSO and CS, were presented. Also, the study introduces a hybrid optimization method to enhance the overall performance of the PV system under PSC. Data forging attacks provide counterfactual proof that a model was trained on a given dataset, when in fact, it was trained on another. These attacks work by forging (replacing) mini-batches with ones containing distinct training examples that produce nearly identical gradients. Data forging appears to break any potential avenues for data governance, as adversarial model owners may forge their training set from a dataset that is not compliant to one that is. Given these serious implications on data auditing and compliance, we critically analyse data forging from both a practical and theoretical point of view, finding that a key practical limitation of current attack methods makes them easily detectable by a verifier; namely that they cannot produce sufficiently identical gradients. Theoretically, we analyse the question of whether two distinct mini-batches can produce the same gradient. Generally, we find that while there may exist an infinite number of distinct mini-batches with real-valued training examples and labels that produce the same gradient, finding those that are within the allowed domain e.g. pixel values between 0-255 and one hot labels is a non trivial task. Our results call for the reevaluation of the strength of existing attacks, and for additional research into successful data forging, given the serious consequences it may have on machine learning and privacy., Comment: 18 pages

In this paper, we explore a multi-task semantic communication (SemCom) system for distributed sources, extending the existing focus on collaborative single-task execution. We build on the cooperative multi-task processing introduced in [1], which divides the encoder into a common unit (CU) and multiple specific units (SUs). While earlier studies in multi-task SemCom focused on full observation settings, our research explores a more realistic case where only distributed partial observations are available, such as in a production line monitored by multiple sensing nodes. To address this, we propose an SemCom system that supports multi-task processing through cooperation on the transmitter side via split structure and collaboration on the receiver side. We have used an information-theoretic perspective with variational approximations for our end-to-end data-driven approach. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed cooperative and collaborative multi-task (CCMT) SemCom system significantly improves task execution accuracy, particularly in complex datasets, if the noise introduced from the communication channel is not limiting the task performance too much. Ground transportation infrastructure significantly impacts community connectivity, economic growth, and access to essential services such as jobs, education, and healthcare. However, in practice, these infrastructures do not provide equitable services for all, and historical disparities have led to inequitable conditions for many individuals. This paper explores diverse definitions of equity relevant to ground infrastructures, examines the consequences of inequitable transportation systems throughout the history of the U.S. highway system, and explores various approaches for conducting equity analysis. Based on the collected information, a generalized framework is introduced to analyze the impact of these infrastructures on transportation equity. The study also provides a novel equity index that can be used to assess equity considering accessibility and affordability. Finally, the framework is applied to a case study in Baltimore City, Maryland, examining the equitable distribution of electric vehicle (EV) chargers. By demonstrating its practical application, the paper offers managers and policymakers a concise step-by-step approach to analyze transportation equity. This method assesses both the socioeconomic features of affected populations and the distribution of services, contributing to the development of a more sustainable ground transport system.

Whilst holding great promise for low noise, ease of operation and networking, useful photonic quantum computing has been precluded by the need for beyond-state-of-the-art components, manufactured by the millions. Here we introduce a manufacturable platform for quantum computing with photons. We benchmark a set of monolithically-integrated silicon photonics-based modules to generate, manipulate, network, and detect photonic qubits, demonstrating dual-rail photonic qubits with $99.98\% \pm 0.01\%$ state preparation and measurement fidelity, Hong-Ou-Mandel quantum interference between independent photon sources with $99.50\%\pm0.25\%$ visibility, two-qubit fusion with $99.22\%\pm0.12\%$ fidelity, and a chip-to-chip qubit interconnect with $99.72\%\pm0.04\%$ fidelity, not accounting for loss. In this paper, we investigated semantic communication for multi-task processing using an information-theoretic approach. We introduced the concept of a "semantic source", allowing multiple semantic interpretations from a single observation. We formulated an end-to-end optimization problem taking into account the communication channel, maximizing mutual information (infomax) to design the semantic encoding and decoding process exploiting the statistical relations between semantic variables. To solve the problem we perform data-driven deep learning employing variational approximation techniques. Our semantic encoder is divided into a common unit and multiple specific units to facilitate cooperative multi-task processing. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed semantic source and system design when statistical relationships exist, comparing cooperative task processing with independent task processing. Training large language models (LLMs) is a costly endeavour in terms of time and computational resources. The large amount of training data used during the unsupervised pre-training phase makes it difficult to verify all data and, unfortunately, undesirable data may be ingested during training. Re-training from scratch is impractical and has led to the creation of the 'unlearning' discipline where models are modified to "unlearn" undesirable information without retraining. However, any modification can alter the behaviour of LLMs, especially on key dimensions such as fairness. This is the first work that examines this interplay between unlearning and fairness for LLMs. In particular, we focus on a popular unlearning framework known as SISA [Bourtoule et al., 2021], which creates an ensemble of models trained on disjoint shards. We evaluate the performance-fairness trade-off for SISA, and empirically demsontrate that SISA can indeed reduce fairness in LLMs. To remedy this, we propose post-processing bias mitigation techniques for ensemble models produced by SISA. We adapt the post-processing fairness improvement technique from [Hardt et al., 2016] to design three methods that can handle model ensembles, and prove that one of the methods is an optimal fair predictor for ensemble of models. Deploying 3D single-photon Lidar imaging in real world applications faces several challenges due to imaging in high noise environments and with sensors having limited resolution. This paper presents a deep learning algorithm based on unrolling a Bayesian model for the reconstruction and super-resolution of 3D single-photon Lidar. The resulting algorithm benefits from the advantages of both statistical and learning based frameworks, providing best estimates with improved network interpretability. Compared to existing learning-based solutions, the proposed architecture requires a reduced number of trainable parameters, is more robust to noise and mismodelling of the system impulse response function, and provides richer information about the estimates including uncertainty measures. Results on synthetic and real data show competitive results regarding the quality of the inference and computational complexity when compared to state-of-the-art algorithms. 3D single-photon LiDAR imaging has an important role in many applications. However, full deployment of this modality will require the analysis of low signal to noise ratio target returns and a very high volume of data. This is particularly evident when imaging through obscurants or in high ambient background light conditions. This paper proposes a multiscale approach for 3D surface detection from the photon timing histogram to permit a significant reduction in data volume. The resulting surfaces are background-free and can be used to infer depth and reflectivity information about the target. We demonstrate this by proposing a hierarchical Bayesian model for 3D reconstruction and spectral classification of multispectral single-photon LiDAR data. The reconstruction method promotes spatial correlation between point-cloud estimates and uses a coordinate gradient descent algorithm for parameter estimation. Results on simulated and real data show the benefits of the proposed target detection and reconstruction approaches when compared to state-of-the-art processing algorithms

Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) aims to uncover the decision-making processes of AI models. However, the data used for such explanations can pose security and privacy risks. Existing literature identifies attacks on machine learning models, including membership inference, model inversion, and model extraction attacks. These attacks target either the model or the training data, depending on the settings and parties involved. XAI tools can increase the vulnerability of model extraction attacks, which is a concern when model owners prefer black-box access, thereby keeping model parameters and architecture private. To exploit this risk, we propose AUTOLYCUS, a novel retraining (learning) based model extraction attack framework against interpretable models under black-box settings. As XAI tools, we exploit Local Interpretable Model-Agnostic Explanations (LIME) and Shapley values (SHAP) to infer decision boundaries and create surrogate models that replicate the functionality of the target model. LIME and SHAP are mainly chosen for their realistic yet information-rich explanations, coupled with their extensive adoption, simplicity, and usability. We evaluate AUTOLYCUS on six machine learning datasets, measuring the accuracy and similarity of the surrogate model to the target model. The results show that AUTOLYCUS is highly effective, requiring significantly fewer queries compared to state-of-the-art attacks, while maintaining comparable accuracy and similarity. We validate its performance and transferability on multiple interpretable ML models, including decision trees, logistic regression, naive bayes, and k-nearest neighbor. Physics-based simulation of mesh based domains remains a challenging task. State-of-the-art techniques can produce realistic results but require expert knowledge. A major bottleneck in many approaches is the step of integrating a potential energy in order to compute velocities or displacements. Recently, learning based method for physics-based simulation have sparked interest with graph based approaches being a promising research direction. One of the challenges for these methods is to generate models that are mesh independent and generalize to different material properties. Moreover, the model should also be able to react to unforeseen external forces like ubiquitous collisions. Our contribution is based on a simple observation: evaluating forces is computationally relatively cheap for traditional simulation methods and can be computed in parallel in contrast to their integration. If we learn how a system reacts to forces in general, irrespective of their origin, we can learn an integrator that can predict state changes due to the total forces with high generalization power. We effectively factor out the physical model behind resulting forces by relying on an opaque force module. We demonstrate that this idea leads to a learnable module that can be trained on basic internal forces of small mesh patches and generalizes to different mesh typologies, resolutions, material parameters and unseen forces like collisions at inference time. Our proposed paradigm is general and can be used to model a variety of physical phenomena. We focus our exposition on the detail enhancement of coarse clothing geometry which has many applications including computer games, virtual reality and virtual try-on.

Foundation Models (FMs) have demonstrated unprecedented capabilities including zero-shot learning, high fidelity data synthesis, and out of domain generalization. However, as we show in this paper, FMs still have poor out-of-the-box performance on expert tasks (e.g. retrieval of car manuals technical illustrations from language queries), data for which is either unseen or belonging to a long-tail part of the data distribution of the huge datasets used for FM pre-training. This underlines the necessity to explicitly evaluate and finetune FMs on such expert tasks, arguably ones that appear the most in practical real-world applications. In this paper, we propose a first of its kind FETA benchmark built around the task of teaching FMs to understand technical documentation, via learning to match their graphical illustrations to corresponding language descriptions. Our FETA benchmark focuses on text-to-image and image-to-text retrieval in public car manuals and sales catalogue brochures. FETA is equipped with a procedure for completely automatic annotation extraction (code would be released upon acceptance), allowing easy extension of FETA to more documentation types and application domains in the future. Our automatic annotation leads to an automated performance metric shown to be consistent with metrics computed on human-curated annotations (also released). We provide multiple baselines and analysis of popular FMs on FETA leading to several interesting findings that we believe would be very valuable to the FM community, paving the way towards real-world application of FMs for practical expert tasks currently 'overlooked' by standard benchmarks focusing on common objects.

With privacy legislation empowering the users with the right to be forgotten, it has become essential to make a model amenable for forgetting some of its training data. However, existing unlearning methods in the machine learning context can not be directly applied in the context of distributed settings like federated learning due to the differences in learning protocol and the presence of multiple actors. In this paper, we tackle the problem of federated unlearning for the case of erasing a client by removing the influence of their entire local data from the trained global model. To erase a client, we propose to first perform local unlearning at the client to be erased, and then use the locally unlearned model as the initialization to run very few rounds of federated learning between the server and the remaining clients to obtain the unlearned global model. We empirically evaluate our unlearning method by employing multiple performance measures on three datasets, and demonstrate that our unlearning method achieves comparable performance as the gold standard unlearning method of federated retraining from scratch, while being significantly efficient. Unlike prior works, our unlearning method neither requires global access to the data used for training nor the history of the parameter updates to be stored by the server or any of the clients.

Virtual telepresence is the future of online communication. Clothing is an essential part of a person's identity and self-expression. Yet, ground truth data of registered clothes is currently unavailable in the required resolution and accuracy for training telepresence models for realistic cloth animation. Here, we propose an end-to-end pipeline for building drivable representations for clothing. The core of our approach is a multi-view patterned cloth tracking algorithm capable of capturing deformations with high accuracy. We further rely on the high-quality data produced by our tracking method to build a Garment Avatar: an expressive and fully-drivable geometry model for a piece of clothing. The resulting model can be animated using a sparse set of views and produces highly realistic reconstructions which are faithful to the driving signals. We demonstrate the efficacy of our pipeline on a realistic virtual telepresence application, where a garment is being reconstructed from two views, and a user can pick and swap garment design as they wish. In addition, we show a challenging scenario when driven exclusively with body pose, our drivable garment avatar is capable of producing realistic cloth geometry of significantly higher quality than the state-of-the-art.

Proximity-based contact tracing relies on mobile-device interaction to estimate the spread of disease. ShareTrace is one such approach that improves the efficacy of tracking disease spread by considering direct and indirect forms of contact. In this work, we utilize the actor model to provide an efficient and scalable formulation of ShareTrace with asynchronous, concurrent message passing on a temporal contact network. We also introduce message reachability, an extension of temporal reachability that accounts for network topology and message-passing semantics. Our evaluation on both synthetic and real-world contact networks indicates that correct parameter values optimize for algorithmic accuracy and efficiency. With the reduction of sequencing costs and the pervasiveness of computing devices, genomic data collection is continually growing. However, data collection is highly fragmented and the data is still siloed across different repositories. Analyzing all of this data would be transformative for genomics research. However, the data is sensitive, and therefore cannot be easily centralized. Furthermore, there may be correlations in the data, which if not detected, can impact the analysis. In this paper, we take the first step towards identifying correlated records across multiple data repositories in a privacy-preserving manner. The proposed framework, based on random shuffling, synthetic record generation, and local differential privacy, allows a trade-off of accuracy and computational efficiency. Several algorithms have been proposed to address these issues based on statistical or learning-based frameworks. Statistical methods provide rich information about the inferred parameters but are limited by the assumed model correlation structures, while deep learning methods show state-of-the-art performance but limited inference guarantees, preventing their extended use in critical applications. This paper unrolls a statistical Bayesian algorithm into a new deep learning architecture for robust image reconstruction from single-photon Lidar data, i.e., the algorithm's iterative steps are converted into neural network layers. The resulting algorithm benefits from the advantages of both statistical and learning based frameworks, providing best estimates with improved network interpretability. Compared to existing learning-based solutions, the proposed architecture requires a reduced number of trainable parameters, is more robust to noise and mismodelling effects, and provides richer information about the estimates including uncertainty measures. Results on synthetic and real data show competitive results regarding the quality of the inference and computational complexity when compared to state-of-the-art algorithms.

Scope: To study the effect of variation in dietary vitamin A (VA) content on its hepatic and intestinal metabolism. Methods and results: Adult female and male rats were fed with diets containing 400, 2300, or 9858 IU/kg VA for 31-33 weeks. VA concentrations were measured in plasma and liver. Bioavailability and intestinal conversion efficiency of $\beta$-carotene to VA were assessed by measuring postprandial plasma $\beta$-carotene and retinyl palmitate concentrations after force-feeding rats with $\beta$-carotene. Expression of genes involved in VA metabolism, together with concentrations of RBP4, BCO1 and SR-BI proteins, were measured in the intestine and liver of female rats. Plasma retinol concentrations were lower and hepatic free retinol concentrations were higher in females than in males. There was no effect of dietary VA content on $\beta$-carotene bioavailability and its conversion efficiency, but bioavailability was higher and conversion efficiency was lower in females than in males. The expression of most genes exhibited a U-shaped dose response curve depending on VA intake. Main conclusions: $\beta$-Carotene bioavailability and conversion efficiency to VA are affected by the sex of rats. Results of gene expression suggest a hormetic regulation of VA metabolism in female rats.

The process of tracking human anatomy in computer vision is referred to pose estimation, and it is used in fields ranging from gaming to surveillance. Three-dimensional pose estimation traditionally requires advanced equipment, such as multiple linked intensity cameras or high-resolution time-of-flight cameras to produce depth images. However, there are applications, e.g.~consumer electronics, where significant constraints are placed on the size, power consumption, weight and cost of the usable technology. Here, we demonstrate that computational imaging methods can achieve accurate pose estimation and overcome the apparent limitations of time-of-flight sensors designed for much simpler tasks. The sensor we use is already widely integrated in consumer-grade mobile devices, and despite its low spatial resolution, only 4$\times$4 pixels, our proposed Pixels2Pose system transforms its data into accurate depth maps and 3D pose data of multiple people up to a distance of 3 m from the sensor. We are able to generate depth maps at a resolution of 32$\times$32 and 3D localization of a body parts with an error of only $\approx$10 cm at a frame rate of 7 fps. This work opens up promising real-life applications in scenarios that were previously restricted by the advanced hardware requirements and cost of time-of-flight technology.

The exponentially growing market of electrochemical energy storage devices requires substitution of flammable, volatile, and toxic electrolytes. The use of Water in salt solutions (WiSE) regarded as green electrolyte might be of interest thanks to an association of key features such as high safety, low cost, wide electrochemical stability, and high ionic conductivity. Here, we report comprehensive chemical-physical study of circumneutral WiSE based on ammonium acetate so as to investigate application in electrochemical energy storage systems, with focus on the effect of pH, density, viscosity, conductivity, and the ESW with salt concentration ranging from 1 to 30 mol/kg . Data are reported and discussed with respect to the structure of the solutions investigated by complemental IR and molecular dynamic study. The study is addressed through the showcase of an asymmetric supercapacitor based on Argan shell-derived carbon electrodes tested at temperatures ranging from -10 to 80 {\deg}C.

3D single-photon LiDAR imaging plays an important role in numerous applications. However, long acquisition times and significant data volumes present a challenge to LiDAR imaging. This paper proposes a task-optimized adaptive sampling framework that enables fast acquisition and processing of high-dimensional single-photon LiDAR data. Given a task of interest, the iterative sampling strategy targets the most informative regions of a scene which are defined as those minimizing parameter uncertainties. The task is performed by considering a Bayesian model that is carefully built to allow fast per-pixel computations while delivering parameter estimates with quantified uncertainties. The framework is demonstrated on multispectral 3D single-photon LiDAR imaging when considering object classification and/or target detection as tasks. It is also analysed for both sequential and parallel scanning modes for different detector array sizes. Results on simulated and real data show the benefit of the proposed optimized sampling strategy when compared to fixed sampling strategies.

3D time-of-flight (ToF) imaging is used in a variety of applications such as augmented reality (AR), computer interfaces, robotics and autonomous systems. Single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) are one of the enabling technologies providing accurate depth data even over long ranges. By developing SPADs in array format with integrated processing combined with pulsed, flood-type illumination, high-speed 3D capture is possible. However, array sizes tend to be relatively small, limiting the lateral resolution of the resulting depth maps, and, consequently, the information that can be extracted from the image for applications such as object detection. In this paper, we demonstrate that these limitations can be overcome through the use of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for high-performance object detection. We present outdoor results from a portable SPAD camera system that outputs 16-bin photon timing histograms with 64x32 spatial resolution. The results, obtained with exposure times down to 2 ms (equivalent to 500 FPS) and in signal-to-background (SBR) ratios as low as 0.05, point to the advantages of providing the CNN with full histogram data rather than point clouds alone. Alternatively, a combination of point cloud and active intensity data may be used as input, for a similar level of performance. In either case, the GPU-accelerated processing time is less than 1 ms per frame, leading to an overall latency (image acquisition plus processing) in the millisecond range, making the results relevant for safety-critical computer vision applications which would benefit from faster than human reaction times., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables
