Palestinian identity is symbolic of the struggle against elimination, against becoming absent. The pervasive use of social media today has been pivotal in revealing this struggle, enabling the direct and unrestricted sharing of Palestinian suffering in the face of unremitting destruction and displacement. Across the globe, people bear witness to Palestinians fighting for survival amidst the mass bombings, field executions, and engineered famine in Israel’s current military operation in the Gaza Strip. This campaign, which began as a response to Hamas’ attack on October 7th 2023, has led to the extermination of Palestinian people at a level and pace that likely exceeds any conflict in modern history. Consequently, many experts consider this military operation a plausible genocide. Yet, despite its shocking and unfiltered nature, this recent incursion is only the latest example in a series of violent aggressions against Palestinians that have lasted nearly a century. This article aims to analyse works of speculative fiction that tackle these issues.

For some children and young people (CYP) with long-term physical health conditions (LTPHCs) attending school can be difficult. There is a lack of evidence documenting their school attendance experiences, how schools manage absence for these children, and subsequent effects. This study utilised an existing dataset from eighty-nine 11–18-year-olds in mainstream secondary schools in the United Kingdom across 11 LTPHCs that provided first-hand accounts about the children’s experiences of school. Data pre-coded “attendance” were subject to thematic analysis to explore issues emerging. Findings showed attendance patterns varied, with some CYP missing little and others significant amounts of education. Children with LTPHCs wanted to attend school and did their best to navigate education alongside health. School systems for attendance were inconsistent and adversarial. Remedial and supportive action emerged as lacking, and children felt it was their personal responsibility to make up for lost time and missed work when absent. Decisions on whether they attended school, coupled with practices promoting high attendance had detrimental consequences for CYP with LTPHCs educationally, emotionally and socially. Overall, children with LTPHCs felt punished, stigmatised, unfairly treated, unequal and excluded. Results have implications for education, health, and policy practitioners to better plan and target attention so that the LTPHC cohort are treated sensitively and equitably and afforded their entitlement to education when they cannot go to school for health reasons often outside of their control.

Generalized epilepsy affects 24 million people globally; at least 25% of cases remain medically refractory. The thalamus, with widespread connections throughout the brain, plays a critical role in generalized epilepsy. The intrinsic properties of thalamic neurons and the synaptic connections between populations of neurons in the nucleus reticularis thalami and thalamocortical relay nuclei help generate different firing patterns that influence brain states. In particular, transitions from tonic firing to highly synchronized burst firing mode in thalamic neurons can cause seizures that rapidly generalize and cause altered awareness and unconsciousness. Here, we review the most recent advances in our understanding of how thalamic activity is regulated and discuss the gaps in our understanding of the mechanisms of generalized epilepsy syndromes. Elucidating the role of the thalamus in generalized epilepsy syndromes may lead to new opportunities to better treat pharmaco-resistant generalized epilepsy by thalamic modulation and dietary therapy.

What is presence really? What are we talking about when we talk about presence? For a performer, it seems such an obvious thing but the closer you look, the more elusive it becomes, like one of those optical illusions which can only be perceived sideways through the eyes; looking directly makes it immediately disappear. And the whole thing becomes even more sideways when we take presence and put it in the middle of a classroom. Is it possible that we might have been over emphasising presence in the search for the elusive-mysterious? Have we been overly focused on presence in our pursuit of the qualities that make teaching and learning truly transformative? And obviously, what sort of transformative are we talking about in the fractured times that we live in? What is the other side of the story? What can Absence tell us about its polar twin? Does the absent become present by its very absence? And what or who is it that is absent? In my talk which I've framed as a set of field notes, entirely subjective observations gathered over a period of time, I am drawing upon my experience as a performer in search of the elusive-mysterious; my experience as a teaching artist in a teacher education program at Delhi University; and as a researcher investigating teacher agency in the classroom. In interrogating the binary of presence/absence, I seek to throw some light into that liminal space where these two intersect and collide, and begin to reveal the elusive-mysterious so that pedagogical practices can be reimagined and reenacted.

Iconic hero of the famous decadent Joris-Karl Huysmans’s novel, A Rebours, Des Esseintes collects in his library a precious collection of ancient and contemporary works, made up of his favorite readings including the works of Flaubert and Mallarmé.In this study, we continue to walk in the footsteps of A Rebours’s protagonist to offer a comparative reading of the texts of its two revered authors. For Flaubert, our main corpus will be Madame Bovary, for Mallarmé, it will be the poem published in gratitude to Huysmans, Prose pour Des Esseintes. This choice may be surprising: why compare the novel traditionally – and possibly mistakenly – considered to be a first masterpiece of realism, and the poem taken for one of the most enigmatic texts of symbolism? It seems to us, and we will try to demonstrate it here, that Flaubert's novel proposes possible interpretations which justify the connection with the mysterious Mallarmé’s poem. After a brief introduction devoted to the relationships between Huysmans, Flaubert and Mallarmé, as well as the evocation of their works in A Rebours, we will develop the triple theme of the absence, the unreal and the silence, as it presents itself in Flaubert's novel and in Mallarmé's poem. The conclusion will allow us to reinscribe A Rebours in this same theme.

Metabolism regulates neuronal activity and modulates the occurrence of epileptic seizures. Here, using two rodent models of absence epilepsy, we show that hypoglycaemia increases the occurrence of spike-wave seizures. We then show that selectively disrupting glycolysis in the thalamus, a structure implicated in absence epilepsy, is sufficient to increase spike-wave seizures. We propose that activation of thalamic AMP-activated protein kinase, a sensor of cellular energetic stress and potentiator of metabotropic GABAB-receptor function, is a significant driver of hypoglycaemia-induced spike-wave seizures. We show that AMP-activated protein kinase augments postsynaptic GABAB-receptor-mediated currents in thalamocortical neurons and strengthens epileptiform network activity evoked in thalamic brain slices. Selective thalamic AMP-activated protein kinase activation also increases spike-wave seizures. Finally, systemic administration of metformin, an AMP-activated protein kinase agonist and common diabetes treatment, profoundly increased spike-wave seizures. These results advance the decades-old observation that glucose metabolism regulates thalamocortical circuit excitability by demonstrating that AMP-activated protein kinase and GABAB-receptor cooperativity is sufficient to provoke spike-wave seizures.

In this study, I tried to analyze the subject of poetry’s relationship with “absence” through Jean Paul Sartre’s (1905-80) work titled Being and Nothingness. I utilized the concept analysis method to uncover the idea of nothingness in the “Adem Kasidesi” using Sartre’s concepts of “alienation, “being-in-itself,” “being-foritself,” and “being-for-others.” Absence appears in the poetry in two different ways, resulting from the weakening of the subject’s bond with external reality. This study asserts that absence appears in poetry as “glorification” rather than “objectification of the self.” The latter means the disengagement of the subject from the social sphere. However, the subject does not entirely disconnect from external reality in the poetry but ignores the public sphere and threatens it with absence. Absence is exalted and disturbs the existence. The subject in the poetry is alien to the external world. It constructs a new “self,” albeit fragmented. The subject in the poetry positions itself, with a concept outside of the established consciousness, therefore, as nothingness. Consequently, the subject initiates alienation. According to Sartre, the Ego (being-for-itself) defines the cultural subject that is outside the primordial and natural being (being-in-itself). Alienation results from one’s recognition and rejection of the cultural subject. The subject of poetry becomes alienated initially as it exits the public sphere. Afterward, glorifying absence alienates external reality. Therefore, the presence-absence relationship does not complement each other, as in common sense. Absence contributes to the re-subjectivation process as a glorifying value that determines presence. The subject’s lack-desire-completeness relationship is problematic, and in poetry, the subject seeks completeness with absence. The desire to constantly threaten with absence indicates a continuous process of subjectivation. Absence in poetry is a symptom healing the subject or an additional value. Absence is a possibility for constructing a unified “being-foritself,” giving the impression of a complete subject, though illusion.

This paper analyzes Juan Manuel Echavarríaʼs photographic project Silences as a piece of a visual culture produced in the last years to represent and memorialize the war in Colombia. I used Michele Kennerly’s concept of rhetorical transport to describe these images’ power to bring before the spectator’s eyes and mind people, places, or things that are absent. I argue that these images fail to present empty and quiet spaces since it is unfeasible to see them without the presence of bodies. The stillness and immobility transmitted by them are disrupted by the viewer, who is moved to fill those spaces of emptiness with voices, sounds, and movements. In these images, the rhetorical power of condensing simultaneously the present and the absent offers contrasting sensorial experiences.

The issue of spouse separation due to the husband's absence is a topic deserving research due to its significant impact on people's lives, particularly in their pursuit of livelihood and the consequent separation from their families and homelands. This issue is also relevant to circumstances involving forced separations due to public calamities or legal systems in some countries. The primary objective of this research is to shed light on the perspectives of faqihs (jurists) regarding this matter and to elucidate the regulations governing personal status in the Arab Gulf States. The study commences with an introductory section, followed by the definition of absence and disagreements, along with an examination of their justifications for the legal separation of spouses. It also delves into the types of divisions that may result from such separations. Furthermore, the study outlines the provisions incorporated within the personal status laws of the Gulf States. In conclusion, the research encapsulates its key findings and recommendations. One of the noteworthy recommendations involves conducting a review of personal status laws in light of recent developments. BackgroundDepression is the greatest contributor to worldwide disability. The purpose of this study was to understand the influence of antidepressant and psychotherapy treatment adherence on future work leaves for patients with major depressive disorder.MethodsPatients with a newly diagnosed major depressive disorder (n = 26,256) were identified in IBM® Watson™ MarketScan® medical and disability claims databases. Antidepressant and psychotherapy adherence metrics were evaluated in the acute phase of treatment, defined as the 114 days following the depression diagnosis. Multiple variable Cox proportional hazards regression models evaluated the influence of antidepressant and/or psychotherapy adherence on future injury or illness work leaves.ResultsThe majority of work leaves in the 2-year follow-up period occurred in the acute phase of treatment (71.2%). Among patients without a work leave in the acute phase and who received antidepressants and/or psychotherapy (n = 19,994), those who were adherent to antidepressant or psychotherapy treatment in the acute phase had a 16% (HR = 0.84, 95% CI = 0.77-0.91) reduced risk of a future work leave compared to treatment non-adherent patients. Patients who were non-adherent or adherent to antidepressant treatment had a 22% (HR = 1.22, 95% CI = 1.11-1.35) and 13% (HR = 1.13, 95% CI = 1.01-1.27) greater risk of a future work leave, respectively, than patients not receiving antidepressant treatment. Conversely, patients who were non-adherent or adherent to psychotherapy treatment had a 9% (HR = 0.91, 95% CI = 0.81-1.02) and 28% (HR = 0.72, 95% CI = 0.64-0.82) reduced risk of a future work leave, respectively, than patients not receiving psychotherapy treatment.ConclusionsThis analysis suggests that treatment adherence may reduce the likelihood of a future work leave for patients with newly diagnosed major depressive disorder. Psychotherapy appears more effective than antidepressants in reducing the risk of a future work leave.

At least within the last century, artists have produced works that seem to have something missing. Salvatore Garau’s sculpture Sono is (apparently) composed of empty space; the original drawing at the heart of Robert Rauschenberg’s Erased de Kooning Drawing is essentially gone; Rauschenberg’s White Paintings are primarily just white canvases. In this paper, I examine this ‘something missing’ – which I call an ‘aesthetic absence’. These absences are aesthetically relevant to the identities, meaning, and value of the works of art where audiences find such absences, but such relevance can only fully be ascertained and assessed once the absence is resolved, and this resolution comes through an act of interpretation.

We report the clinical and EEG data of two patients harboring heterozygous SLC6A1 mutations, who presented with typical absence seizures at 3 Hz spike and wave as well as with mild cognitive disability. Neuroradiological and other laboratory investigations were normal. Our observations suggest that SLC6A1 mutations can be suspected in children with typical absences as the only seizure type, especially if associated with, even mild, cognitive deficits. ObjectivesTo examine the influence of depression and/or anxiety on work leaves and the impact of work leaves on experiencing a new-onset depression and/or anxiety disorder.MethodsIBM's MarketScan® research databases were linked to investigate depressive and anxiety disorders in workers with a work leave due to an injury or non-mental health illness (n = 467,930) and without a work leave (n = 2,764,447).ResultsThe odds of a work leave within a year were 2.10 times higher (95%CI: 2.08-2.13) in individuals with depression and/or anxiety compared to those without. The odds of developing a new-onset depression and/or anxiety within a year was 4.21 times higher (95% CI: 4.14-4.27) in individuals with a work leave compared to those without.ConclusionDepression and anxiety are both risk factors for and subsequent outcomes of injuries or illnesses that require a work leave.

Homesickness Series, an ongoing series of monochromatic ink paintings modeled after tintype photography, frames the façades of individual homes in Detroit as a form of portraiture. If individual depictions of lost or endangered homes can be seen as portraits of the residents they once contained, and if homes are sites and containers of memory, then rendered windows and doors serve as both literal and psychological passageways into the interior of the home and the interior sites of the mind with its associated lived experiences and memories. As a corrective measure in representing Detroit, my practice uses visual or written means to provide the audience of my work with oft-overlooked historical contexts to illuminate the ways corporate abandonment, housing segregation, highway construction, and white flight led to the city’s present day challenges.

This volume of Refract investigates the power dynamics of (in)visibility through “haunting” and the “trace.” A form of way making, the trace offers itself as an object, subject, and action, as both a remnant and a becoming. Haunting similarly defies legibility in that it occupies a discomforting space between something/somebody and nothing/nobody—not simply a vestige of previous realities but an active force that unsettles life-and-death worlds. As a journal of visual studies, Refract is drawn to the power dynamics inherent in the zone between the visible and the invisible: a zone that the haunting and the trace both inhabit. This introduction does not seek to define hauntings and traces per se, but hopes instead to offer spaces for their forms to emerge. One starting point is the tension between absence and presence instantiated by the terms haunting and the trace.

In a time of unprecedented species loss, whose absence matters in international biodiversity conservation? Who or what is made absent in this process, and how? Drawing on scholarship that focuses on the agency of absence, this article explores how the orangutan (Pongo spp.)—a popular conservation flagship species—becomes present in Bornean villagers' lives. It offers a new understanding of flagship species action by examining the complex, often unseen relational dynamics through which orangutans influence community-conservation encounters. As the study shows, conservationists' efforts to mitigate the absence of species through a combination of imaginative, discursive, and material variables inadvertently 'absences' Bornean villagers and their concerns. Reflecting on this process of absencing, the paper moreover discusses how notions of absence inform contemporary conservation thought and action.

Can we really perceive absences, i.e., missing things? Sartre tells us that when he arrived late for his appointment at the café, he saw the absence of his friend Pierre. Is that really what he saw? Where was it, exactly? Why didn’t Sartre see the absence of other people who were not there? Why did other people who were there not see the absence of Pierre? The perception of absences gives rise to a host of conundrums and is constantly on the verge of conceptual confusion. Here I focus on the need to be clear about four sorts of distinctions: (i) the difference between perceiving an absence and perceiving something that is absent; (ii) the difference between perceiving an absence and an absence of perceiving; (iii) the difference between perceiving an absence and perceiving something as an absence; and (iv) the difference between perceiving an absence and perceiving that something is absent.

Abstract Background In health care, the shift work is arranged as irregular work shifts to provide operational hours for 24/7 care. We aimed to investigate working hour trends and turnover in health care via identification of time-related sequences of work shifts and absences among health care employees. The transitions between the work shifts (i.e., morning, day, evening, and night shifts), and absences (days off and other leaves) over time were analyzed and the predictors of change in irregular shift work were quantified. Methods A longitudinal cohort study was conducted using employer-owned payroll-based register data of objective and day-to-day working hours and absences of one hospital district in Finland from 2014 to 2019 (n = 4931 employees). The working hour data included start and end of work shifts, any kind of absence from work (days off, sickness absence, parental leave), and employee’s age, and sex. Daily work shifts and absences in 2014 and 2019 were used in sequence analysis. Generalized linear model was used to estimate how each identified sequence cluster was associated with sex and age. Results We identified four sequence clusters: “Morning” (60% in 2014 and 56% in 2019), “Varying shift types” (22% both in 2014 and 2019), “Employee turnover” (13% in 2014 and 3% in 2019), and “Unstable employment (5% in 2014 and 19% in 2019). The analysis of transitions from one cluster to another between 2014 and 2019 indicated that most employees stayed in the same clusters, and most often in the “Varying shift types” (60%) and “Morning” (72%) clusters. The majority of those who moved, moved to the cluster “Morning” in 2019 from “Employee turnover” (43%), “Unstable employment” (46%) or “Varying shift types” (21%). Women were more often than men in the clusters “Employee turnover” and “Unstable employment”, whereas older employees were more often in “Morning” and less often in the other cluster groups. Conclusion Four clusters with different combinations of work shifts and absences were identified. The transition rates between work shifts and absences with five years in between indicated that most employees stayed in the same clusters. The likelihood of a working hour pattern characterized by “Morning” seems to increase with age.

This article explores what it means to listen to children by moving beyond the notion of voice and staying with the absences of children. In this way, we include the possibly lost, forgotten or unapproachable children in child and childhood research. Our methodological starting point is to listen by ‘staying with’ the absences of children’s verbal voices and physical bodies in two photographs. These photographs depict material artefacts connected to children in vulnerable situations: shrouds for wrapping stillborn babies’ bodies, and children’s shoes as an emblem of children living in hiding from domestic violence. The idea is to explore how we can listen to children whose verbal or embodied encounters we cannot or do not wish to display. Our aim is to listen to these absences and discuss how they influence and possibly reshape the practices of listening, as well as notions of the child and childhood.

This article explores the representation of the hand in three recent fiction films by Naomi Kawase: Sweet Bean (2015), Radiance (2017) and True Mothers (2020). Extending current scholarship that discusses the director’s use of haptic visuality, I argue that Kawase’s haptic cinema further exhibits its hapticity by framing the hand as both a Derridean trace and conduit that leaves behind traces in objects such as bean paste, letters, photo cameras, and photographs. Kawase’s framing of these objects in close-up shots emphasizes not only their materiality and haptic texture but also their foreshadowed physical absence. By reading Kawase through Jacques Derrida’s notion of trace, the article highlights not only the relevance behind understanding Kawase’s recent fiction films through a Derridean lens but also how the director’s own attitude towards cinema, as one that aims to simultaneously frame absence and presence, can also be read as a Derridean approach to cinema.

This refers to the spread of the masculine look.And this is the look of king that is circulating on women in the harem.

Aim: To investigate the social burden of nasopharyngeal detection of various respiratory viruses and the co‐detection of viral and bacterial pathogens. Methods: This prospective cohort study included 737 children with a suspected respiratory tract infection or fever in a paediatric emergency department during one epidemiological year (2014–2015) in Finland. Nasopharyngeal swab samples were analysed with multiplex polymerase chain reaction for 16 viruses and 7 respiratory bacteria. Parents filled out a questionnaire regarding child's and parents' absence from day care, school, or work at the time of the visit and 14 days afterward. Results: The length of the children's absence from day care or school, or parental absence from work, did not significantly differ between the detected viral pathogens. Co‐detection of any respiratory virus and Streptococcus pneumoniae or Haemophilus influenzae in the nasopharynx were associated with a 2.5‐day (95% CI of the difference: 0.71 to 4.3) and 3.0‐day (95% CI: 0.35 to 5.7) longer parental absence from work, respectively, compared with the detection of viruses alone when adjusted for age. Conclusion: Nasopharyngeal detection of S. pneumoniae or H. influenzae was associated with an increase in the length of parental absence from work when compared with the detection of virus alone. Listening to sermons through digital media is not new. However, the pandemic pressed many preachers into a medium in unexpected ways. The need for immediate solutions did not allow time for preachers to reflect on what was happening theologically. This paper explores theological presence. The question of how one creates connection and presence when no one is even in the same room, city, or country is not a new one. The rhetorical concern of being "present while absent" shows up in the writings of ancient rhetoricians, opening the door for theological conversation. Recognizing there are ways to employ rhetorical techniques for non-virtuous ends, the pandemic also exposed that some virtuous attempts also failed the ecclesial need to build relationships online. Digital platforms and social media give churches and ministers opportunities to hold space for developing relationships and witnessing the Gospel. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The grounds of religious diversity and pluralism have mainly been sought out from without, i.e., from outside the human mind. A striking example is Hick's idea of the one ultimate reality, which is posited to embrace all the semi-ultimate realities appearing in individual religions. However, the present inquiry adopts a different strategy for coping with the above-mentioned issue. Specifically, in this inquiry, I attempt to find a substantial clue to religious diversity and pluralism from within, i.e., from the intentionality of the mind. This idea, as a descriptive and explanatory hypothesis, consists of the following theses: (I) As suggested by the Husserlian phenomenology interpreted by Sokolowski, there are at least two forms of directedness of the mind: filled and empty intentionalities. (II) In connection with them, two distinct types of religious spirituality emerge: the intentionality of transcendental filling (ITF) and that of transcendental emptying (ITE). (III) The diversity of religion that gives rise to pluralism is, at least in part, due to the different ways in which those two forms of religious minds are combined. With these considerations, we reach a new philosophical foundation of the issue in question, and also obtain a possible theoretical basis for securing an adequate method of religious—and particularly interreligious—studies. We report the clinical and EEG data of two patients harboring heterozygous SLC6A1 mutations, who presented with typical absence seizures at 3 Hz spike and wave as well as with mild cognitive disability. Neuroradiological and other laboratory investigations were normal. Our observations suggest that SLC6A1 mutations can be suspected in children with typical absences as the only seizure type, especially if associated with, even mild, cognitive deficits.

IntroductionThe use of pseudo-absence data constrained by environmental conditions can facilitate potential distribution predictions of invasive species. However, pseudo-absence data generated by existing methods are usually not representative because the relationship between the presence and pseudo-absence points is either simplistic or neglected. This could under or overestimate the potential distribution of invasive species.MethodsTo address this deficiency, this study proposes a new method for obtaining pseudo-absence data based on geographic similarities. First, the reliability of pseudo-absences was quantified based on the geographic similarity to the occurrence of species. Subsequently, a representative pseudo-absence reliability threshold interval was determined. Finally, different pseudo-absence acquisition methods were assessed by combining virtual species with a real invasive species.ResultsThe analysis demonstrated that the geographic similarity method can improve model accuracy and achieve a more realistic distribution compared with the traditional method of sampling for pseudo-absence data.DiscussionThis result indicates that the pseudo-absence data obtained using the geographic similarity approach were more representative. Our study provides valuable insights into improving invasive plant distribution predictions by considering the geographical relationships between species occurrences and the surrounding environments.

This article reports on a multidisciplinary project exploring constructions of disability in Iceland before the establishment of disability as a modern legal, bureaucratic, and administrative concept. The project’s vast temporal scope spans the settlement of Iceland in the late 9th century to the early 20th century, and it combines research in the fields of Archaeology, Medieval Literature, Folklore, History, and Museology. The article outlines the project’s rich and diverse source material and its data collection procedures before discussing the various methods employed across the disciplines involved. Focus simultaneously turns to the project’s myriad discipline-specific findings and to the presence of ambiguity and absence, invisibility, or silence as recurring cross-disciplinary themes.

In the introduction to this special issue, the editors are concerned with how the Russian state defines its national culture and history mainly with reference to Slavic civilisation, Orthodox Christianity and imperial glory. This post-Soviet discourse of nation-building may be understood as an attempt to cope with a sense of loss in the wake of the Soviet Union’s collapse. That discourse also affects how nationalist-minded observers interpret space as naturally Russian and as part of the empire of the past (or the present). Regrettably, little consideration is being paid to Russia’s ethnic and religious minority cultures, which hardly seem to contribute to Russian history and culture and sometimes do not even feature in representations thereof. Critically engaging with the ideas of presence and absence—the presence of one culture or tradition to the detriment of others—, the editors suggest, can potentially help to decolonise accounts and illustrations of Russian culture and heritage. In the best case, the outcome of such an exercise would be a more adequate involvement of minority representatives in the process of negotiating Russian national culture.

Desire is central to John of the Cross' treatment of the mystical ascent to God. He holds that God is desire and that there is a meeting between human and divine desire in the state of union with God, which is the goal. But it is less clear how this desire is to be understood against John's programmatic negation of desire on the spiritual journey in both its sensory and spiritual forms, according to his negative theology. He regards the lack of satisfaction of desire, which he expresses in terms of darkness and emptiness, as the main manifestation of desire in the process of spiritual transformation. The question arises as to where he locates the meeting between human desire and divine desire, when they seem to be only opposed to one another. The answer lies in the gradual uncovering, through this process, of what is happening beneath the presenting experience of desire, in the human soul's constitution as the subject. Desire is transformed, but in a way that can be affirmed only at the level of this transformation of the subject. In a time of unprecedented species loss, whose absence matters in international biodiversity conservation? Who or what is made absent in this process, and how? Drawing on scholarship that focuses on the agency of absence, this article explores how the orangutan (Pongo spp.)—a popular conservation flagship species—becomes present in Bornean villagers' lives. It offers a new understanding of flagship species action by examining the complex, often unseen relational dynamics through which orangutans influence community-conservation encounters. As the study shows, conservationists' efforts to mitigate the absence of species through a combination of imaginative, discursive, and material variables inadvertently 'absences' Bornean villagers and their concerns. Background: In health care, the shift work is arranged as irregular work shifts to provide operational hours for 24/7 care. We aimed to investigate working hour trends and turnover in health care via identification of time-related sequences of work shifts and absences among health care employees. The transitions between the work shifts (i.e., morning, day, evening, and night shifts), and absences (days off and other leaves) over time were analyzed and the predictors of change in irregular shift work were quantified. Methods: A longitudinal cohort study was conducted using employer-owned payroll-based register data of objective and day-to-day working hours and absences of one hospital district in Finland from 2014 to 2019 (n = 4931 employees). The working hour data included start and end of work shifts, any kind of absence from work (days off, sickness absence, parental leave), and employee's age, and sex. Daily work shifts and absences in 2014 and 2019 were used in sequence analysis. Generalized linear model was used to estimate how each identified sequence cluster was associated with sex and age. Results: We identified four sequence clusters: "Morning" (60% in 2014 and 56% in 2019), "Varying shift types" (22% both in 2014 and 2019), "Employee turnover" (13% in 2014 and 3% in 2019), and "Unstable employment (5% in 2014 and 19% in 2019). The analysis of transitions from one cluster to another between 2014 and 2019 indicated that most employees stayed in the same clusters, and most often in the "Varying shift types" (60%) and "Morning" (72%) clusters. The majority of those who moved, moved to the cluster "Morning" in 2019 from "Employee turnover" (43%), "Unstable employment" (46%) or "Varying shift types" (21%). Women were more often than men in the clusters "Employee turnover" and "Unstable employment", whereas older employees were more often in "Morning" and less often in the other cluster groups. Conclusion: Four clusters with different combinations of work shifts and absences were identified. The transition rates between work shifts and absences with five years in between indicated that most employees stayed in the same clusters. The Job Creation Law affects some policy changes in agrarian sector. For instance, the promulgation of Government Regulation No 18 of 2021 (GR 18/2021) regulates that former western rights land are adjusted to state land. However, some former western rights land have not been converted until now. It results in legal uncertainty over the land status, especially land or building juridically belong to the person declared absent (afwezigheid) yet owned by legal subjects. This study aims to analyze the land rights registration of former western rights land after the Job Creation Law. Besides, it analyzes the implementation of horizontal separation principle in the land rights registration of former western rights land and buildings, that are the object of afwezigheid. This study is legal research applying statute, historical and conceptual approaches. Based on the study, people who possessed former western rights land are the main priority in applying for land rights regarding to GR 18/2021 article 95. Meanwhile, those who only occupy the land and building have to get afwezigheid court decision of the former western rights land owner. Afterwards, they follow the object buying process with the principle of horizontal separation through Probate Office and submit land rights application at the land registry office.

Abstract Background Congenital abnormalities are not very common and are even rarer when two or more are combined. Congenital malformation of the superior mesenteric vein may not affect normal development, or it may lead to moderate or even severe symptoms. In combination with intestinal malrotation, however, it may lead to the need for surgical intervention in the early years of life. Case presentation We present the case of a 22-year-old patient who had been diagnosed with iron deficiency anaemia at the age of two months. As a result of the absence of the proximal section of the superior mesenteric vein, the patient has always needed iron supplements and an occasional erythrocyte transfusion. This has resulted from the formation of collaterals throughout the small bowel, causing chronic blood loss with its clinical manifestation. Although, there are some congenital abnormalities of the superior mesenteric vein, the absence of the superior mesenteric vein is rare, and in this case the clinical course was quite severe. Therefore, we planned bypass surgery for this patient to reduce the duodenal collaterals and resolve the persistent anaemia caused by chronic blood loss from the duodenum. We successfully performed the surgery consisting of the formation of anastomosis between the large collateral vein from the distal end of the superior mesenteric vein and the anterior inferior pancreaticoduodenal vein. Conclusion The purpose of this case report is to describe the rare anatomical malformation of the superior mesenteric vein accompanied by intestinal malrotation, with its potential clinical implications regarding symptoms, clinical presentation, and the impact on potential surgery planning.

Введение. Методом сопоставительного языкознания исследуется, рассматривается и сравнивается понятие управления в русском и персидском языках. При этом делается акцент на близости по общеиндоевропейскому корню этих двух языков. Целью данного исследования являются лучшее понимание управления в русском языке и выявление присутствия управления в персидском языке, помимо его определения в персидском, рассматриваются аспекты на основе русского языка, такие как сильное и слабое, прямое и косвенное управление и функции, которые выполняют зависимые слова. Материал и методы. Материалом послужили грамматические пособия по обоим языкам и специализированные книги и статьи по теме управления (особенно в русском языке). По данной теме в русском языке существует немало исследований, но в персидском языке встречаются редкие работы, в основном на уровне диссертационных работ. Результаты и обсуждение. Управление в русском языке, бесспорно, существует, только встречаются некоторые разногласия по его полноценному существованию, например его разграничение с примыканием, в данной работе объясняется их отличие. Присутствие управления в персидском языке спорное, но в данном исследовании доказывается, что оно существует, но по сравнению с русским языком по-другому выражается. Управление в русском языке более отработанное, поэтому используется как шаблон и на его основе рассматривается управление в персидском языке. Заключение. Делаются выводы о сравнении управления в обоих данных языках, в связи с чем обнаруживаются факты, например употребление послелога – را в персидском языке, во многих случаях уподобляется управлению беспредложного одушевленного винительного падежа мужского рода. Представлены и другие выводы: наличие сильного и слабого, прямого и косвенного управления в персидском языке. Результаты данного исследования могут быть очень эффективными при обучении русскому или персидскому языкам как иностранным.

This review considers evidence for infectious severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) presence and COVID-19 infection and illness resulting from exposure to environmental fecal wastes and waters. There is no documented evidence that (1) infectious, replication-capable SARS-CoV-2 is present in environmental fecal wastes, wastewater or water, and (2) well-documented epidemiological evidence of COVID-19 infection, illness or death has never been reported for these exposure media. COVID-19 is transmitted mainly by direct personal contact and respiratory secretions as airborne droplets and aerosols, and less so by respiratory-secreted fomites via contact (touch) exposures. While SARS-CoV-2 often infects the gastrointestinal tract of infected people, its presence as infectious, replication-capable virus in environmental fecal wastes and waters has never been documented. There is only rare and unquantified evidence of infectious, replication-capable SARS-CoV-2 in recently shed feces of COVID-19 hospital patients. The human infectivity dose–response relationship of SARS-CoV-2 is unknown, thereby making it impossible to estimate evidence-based quantitative health effects assessments by quantitative microbial risk assessment methods requiring both known exposure assessment and health effects assessment data. The World Health Organization, Water Environment Federation, US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and others do not consider environmental fecal wastes and waters as sources of exposure to infectious SARS-CoV-2 causing COVID-19 infection and illness. HIGHLIGHTS No infectious severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has been found in fecal wastes or waters.; There is no epidemiological evidence of COVID-19 infection, illness or death from exposures via environmental fecal wastes or waters.; Health risk assessments for COVID-19 by quantitative microbial risk assessment are not possible.; There is no evidence of infectious SARS-CoV-2 in fecal wastes and waters or COVID-19 infection, illness and death attributable to such exposure media.; Additional and coordinated efforts are recommended to further seek infectious, replication-capable SARS-CoV-2 in environmental fecal wastes and water using state-of-the-science methods.;

This article aims to propose a dialogue between the novelsVerão no Aquário, by Lygia Fagundes Telles, andFazes-me Falta, by Inês Pedrosa, from the perspective of literary language. It is hypothesized that this category presents itself as wandering and powerless to clarify what it says, an observation that is not seen as problematic, only as a composition of the writers’ peculiar style. In this way, according to the critics, these novels are significant in the consecration of both, a consideration that is mainly justified by the irreverence of the language worked on them. The analysis was based on contributions aimed at the study of contemporary literature, especially Maurice Blanchot (1997; 1987) and Roland Barthes (1984; 2011). To understand the meanings made by the critics, the works of Diana Navas, Telma Ventura (2018) and Sonia Régis (1998) were consulted, among others. Thus, it was found that language, in these novels, is intertwined with the idea of death, a theme present in the both plots and that it communes with the writing of the authors.
