Reliable composite forming experiments are required to characterize composite formability, to aid material development, and to validate process simulations models. Due to practical reasons, however, typically a limited amount of forming configurations is studied. The objective of this study is, therefore, to develop a methodology for obtaining controlled forming results in a wide range of configurations. Press forming experiments using a dome geometry were used to explore the formability of two commercial unidirectional thermoplastic composite materials. A variety of forming configurations was employed by changing the blank dimensions and layup. The observation of wrinkling defects was simplified by leaving an additional 3 mm tool gap. Blank width and layup had the most influence on the wrinkling severity, followed by blank thickness and length. Quasi-isotropic layups were found to produce wrinkles in nearly all cases, confirming a difficulty in general to form double curved parts. The size and number of wrinkles in these layups were found to change with the stacking sequence. Cross-ply layups showed better formability, but significant wrinkles were still observed depending on the orientation of the blank relative to the layup. The formability experiments using a dome geometry provided a reliable methodology for controlled forming results in many configurations using a generic toolset. Additionally, a comprehensive comparison of formability for two commercial thermoplastic UD materials in a variety of scenarios was provided.

The emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants raised questions regarding the durability of immune responses after homologous or heterologous boosters after Ad26.COV2.S-priming. We found that SARS-CoV-2–specific binding antibodies, neutralizing antibodies, and T cells are detectable 5 months after boosting, although waning of antibodies and limited cross-reactivity with Omicron BA.1 was observed.

Induction welding is an attractive technology for fusion bonding of carbon fibre reinforced thermoplastic composites. In this process, eddy currents are induced in the conductive carbon fibre network by an alternating electromagnetic field, heating up the parts. In unidirectional ply-based composites, formation of eddy currents relies on the ply interfaces where changes in the fibre orientation facilitate closed-loop conductive paths. Improved control of the welding process therefore requires a deeper understanding of how the fibrous architecture relates to the physical mechanisms governing heat generation, which is the focus of this work. It comprises induction heating experiments on thin laminates and a series of tests performed on ply-scale specimens subjected to a strong electric current. Resultant heating has been monitored using an infrared camera. Combined, the recorded thermograms highlight that eddy currents are dominantly induced along the different fibre directions present in the lay-up and that the varying quality of fibre contacts at the ply interfaces affects the homogeneity of the current density within the plies.

Pectins are dietary fibres that modulate T cell immunity, microbiota composition, and fermentation profiles, but how this is influenced by the degree of methyl-esterification (DM) and degree-of-blockiness (DB) of pectin is unknown. Here, we demonstrate that supplementation of DM19(high-DB), DM49(low-DB) and DM43(high-DB) pectins at a low dose increased the frequencies of intestinal T-helper (Th)1 and Th2 cells after 1 week of pectin supplementation in mice, whereas DM18(low-DB) did not. After 4 weeks of supplementation with those pectins, Th1 and Th2 frequencies returned to control levels, whereas Rorγt+ regulatory T-cell frequencies increased. These structure-dependent effects could derive from induced shifts in microbiota composition that differed between DM18(low-DB) pectin and the other pectins. T-cell-modulating effects were not short-chain-fatty acid-dependent, but rather through an increase in Aryl-hydrocarbon-receptor-activating components. Thus, pectins with a specific combination of DM and DB have an impact on intestinal T cell-immunity in mice, when supplemented at a low dose.
