The objective of the present study was to carry out a literature review on “self-care” or, in English, “Over-the-counter” (OTC) bleaching products, consulting articles in the Pubmed and Scielo databases, between the years 2000 and 2019, in order to evaluate its characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of use. We can conclude that the majority of whitening dentifrices and rinses on the market do not have a clinically significant whitening action; in relation to dental strips or strips, they have satisfactory whitening efficacy. However, it is important to emphasize the need for further long-term studies to affirm whether these products are really safe and efficient, since their advantages and disadvantages become doubtful and questionable. Therefore, guidance and monitoring by the dental surgeon in the handling and prescription of such products is extremely important, after all, if used in an indiscriminate and erroneous way, they can cause potentially harmful data to the patient.

Objectives: The scope is tooth whitening at home, the study focuses on the effectiveness of whitening and treatment effects.Material and Method: A search was carried out in the Medline, PubMed, Lilacs and Scielo databases, between the years 2000 to 2019. The keywords used in the databases were as follows: Tooth whitening, hydrogen peroxide, carbamide peroxide, whitening products , tooth, at home, whitening, effects, efficacy, whitening.Results: Of the 23 studies included in this review, 6 studies evaluated the effectiveness of tooth whitening, 4 studies evaluated the effect of whitening on tooth structure, 1 study evaluated the association of whitening treatment with dentifrice, 3 studies evaluated on cytotoxicity / toxicity, 3 studies evaluated the effect of whitening on dental materials, 2 studies assessed the social impact of tooth whitening, 3 studies assessed sensitivity during treatment and 1 study assessed the effect of bleaching gel storage.Conclusion: In order to try to minimize adverse effects that may arise such as sensitivity, cytotoxicity and gingival irritation, use with the minimum exposure time of the product is indicated; the home whitening technique shows less chance of recurrence after treatment.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-06-01 Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of surface treatments with 1% peracetic acid (PA), solution containing 17% EDTA (SmearClear, Kerr Endodontics), solution containing a combination of 17% EDTA with 2% chlorhexidine (QMix, Dentsply Sirona) on the post-space root dentin compared to 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) on bond strength and resin tags length in dentin. Material and Methods: Forty human-canine roots were endodontically treated and the post space was prepared. The specimens were randomised into four groups (n = 10): control - irrigation with 2.5% NaOCl solution, PA - irrigation with 1% PA, SmearClear - irrigation with SmearClear solution, and QMix - irrigation with QMix solution. The fibre posts were cemented using a self-adhesive resin system (Relyx U200, 3M ESPE). After six months, the specimens were cross-sectioned and subjected to push-out and confocal laser microscopy tests. One-way ANOVA and Tukey's tests were used to analyse the data (a= 0.05). Results: PA and QMix presented the highest bond strength values compared to the other groups (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference between the resin tags length in dentin by the groups (p = 0.75). Conclusions: Irrigation of the post space with 1% PA and QMix showed a positive clinical impact on the adhesion between the fiber post and root dentin. However, these materials had no influence on resin tags length in dentin by self-adhesive resin cement. This study aimed to evaluate the bleaching efficacy, pH, and temperature of 35% hydrogen peroxide (HP) gel used alone or associated with violet LED.Sixty bovine crowns were sectioned (5 × 5 × 2mm). After staining with black tea, the specimens were randomized into four groups (n = 10) according to the bleaching protocol: HP35R: 3 × 15 min 35% HP; HP35: 1 × 45 min 35% HP; HP35VR: 3 × 8min 35% HP + Violet LED; HP35V: 1 × 24 min + Violet LED. Two bleaching sessions were performed for all the groups. Color change was evaluated before, 24h after each session, 7 days and 15 days after the last session. The variables ∆EHP35VR and HP35V the most noticeable color change(p 0.05). The final values of pH were lower than the initial ones, but with no difference between the groups (p 0.05). Groups HP35VR and HP35V showed an increase in temperature in relation to HP35R (p 0.05).Violet LED improved the bleaching efficacy of 35% HP in a time-saving manner without negatively affecting the pH and temperature of 35% HP. The renewal of HP did not influence the outcomes.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-09-01 Background: This study evaluated the effects of several epoxy resin-based sealer compositions (AHP, AH Plus; ADS, Adseal; SPL, Sealer Plus) on bond strength and intratubular dentin penetration of the endodontic obturation, in root canal previously treated with calcium hydroxide intracanal medication (CH) and removed by continuous ultrasonic irrigation (CUI). Material and Methods: Forty-five maxillary canines were prepared up to F5 (ProTaper system), filled with CH, coronally sealed, and stored at 37ºC. After 1 week, CH was removed using 2.5% sodium hypochlorite energized by CUI. The specimens were randomly distributed in three groups (n=15) and root canal obturated, according to epoxy-based resin sealer composition (AHP, ADS or SPL). The roots were transversally sectioned in cervical, middle, and apical thirds. In each radicular third, push out bond strength using universal machine and intratubular dentin using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and Image J Program were evaluated. Bond strength and intratubular dentin penetration were statistically evaluated by ANOVA one-way and Tukey tests and Kruskal Wallis test, respectively (α = 0.05). Results: In middle and apical thirds, AHP showed higher bond strength values (e0.05). All epoxy resin-based sealers presented similar intratubular dentin penetration, independently of the radicular thirds (p>0.05). Cohesive and mixed failures were predominant in the cervical thirds. In the middle and apical thirds, AHP showed more cohesive type failures, while ADS and SPL showed more adhesive-type failures. Conclusions: AHP has the highest bond strength in middle and apical radicular thirds, after calcium hydroxide intracanal medication removal using continuous ultrasonic irrigation, although intratubular dentin infiltration being similar among epoxy resin-based sealer with several chemical composition. This study aimed to investigate the bonding effects of cleaning protocols on dentin impregnated with endodontic sealer residues using ethanol (E) or xylol (X). The effects of dentin acid etching immediately (I) or 7 days (P) after cleaning were also evaluated. For bonding to dentin, universal adhesive (Scotchbond Universal; 3M ESPE) was used. The persistence of sealer residues, hybrid layer formation and microshear bond strength were the performed analysis.One hundred and twenty bovine dentin specimens were allocated into 4 groups (G2 and G4 groups showed a lower persistence of residues (Dentin cleaning using xylol, regardless of the time-point of acid etching, provided lower persistence of residues over the surface and thicker hybrid layer. However, the bond strength of the universal adhesive system in etch-and-rinse strategy was not influenced by the cleaning protocols or time-point of acid etching.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2010-01-01 Objective: To compare the adhesion and maturation of blood components on chemically conditioned root surfaces. Method and Materials: Clinical root samples of human teeth were obtained (n = 150) and manually scaled. Five groups of 30 samples were treated as follows: (1) saline solution irrigation (control); (2) 24% EDTA gel; (3) 25% citric acid solution; (4) tetracycline solution (50 mg/mL); and (5) 30% sodium citrate solution. After these treatments, 15 samples of each group received a blood drop and were analyzed by SEM. The remaining 15 had their surface morphology evaluated for collagen fibrils exposure by SEM. Photomicrographs were analyzed according to the score of adhesion of blood components. Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn multiple comparison tests were employed. Results: The control group was characterized by the absence of blood elements on the surface. The best result was observed in the citric acid group, which had a dense fibrin network with blood elements adhered. The EDTA group showed a moderate fibrin network formation. In contrast, a scarce fibrin network and a few cells were present in the tetracycline samples, and an absence of blood elements was found on sodium citrate specimens. The citric acid group was statistically different from the control group (P < .01). No differences were found among the control, EDTA, tetracycline, and sodium citrate groups (P > .05). Conclusion: Under these experimental conditions, citric acid is indicated to stabilize clots on the root surface, which act as a scaffold for connective tissue cell development. © 2010 by Quintessence Publishing Co Inc.
