A complex function is proposed as a template for the fusion of visual and infrared images such that one of the partial images is chosen as the real part and the other one as the imaginary part of the complex function. The amplitude and the phase of the complex function are two generic algorithms for the synthesis of the amplitude and phase images. Several no–reference quality indices are measured for fused amplitude and phase images and compared to those obtained for the partial images and the images fused with the average fusion, Laplace pyramid transform, and modified discrete wavelet transform methods for four observation scenes.
