1. Semiclassical origin of asymmetric nuclear fission: Nascent-fragment shell effect in periodic-orbit theory

Abstract

The origin of the asymmetry in the fragment mass distribution of low-energy nuclear fission is considered from the semiclassical point of view. Using the semiclassical periodic-orbit theory, one can define and quantify the shell effect associated with spatially localized nascent-fragment (prefragment) part of the potential. We investigate the roles of prefragments in the deformed shell effect using a simple cavity potential model but with realistic shape degrees of freedom for describing the fission processes. Abstract

The Fedoriuk-Maslov catastrophe theory of caustics and turning points is extended to solve the bifurcation problems by the improved stationary phase method (ISPM). The trace formulas for the radial power-law (RPL) potentials are presented by the ISPM based on the second- and third-order expansion of the classical action near the stationary point. A considerable enhancement of contributions of the two orbits (pair of consisting of the parent and newborn orbits) at their bifurcation is shown. The ISPM trace formula is proposed for a simple bifurcation scenario of Hamiltonian systems with continuous symmetries, where the contributions of the bifurcating parent orbits vanish upon approaching the bifurcation point due to the reduction of the end-point manifold. This occurs since the contribution of the parent orbits is included in the term corresponding to the family of the newborn daughter orbits. Taking this feature into account, the ISPM level densities calculated for the RPL potential model are shown to be in good agreement with the quantum results at the bifurcations and asymptotically far from the bifurcation points., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

The periodic-orbit theory based on the improved stationary-phase method within the phase-space path integral approach is presented for the semiclassical description of the nuclear shell structure, concerning the main topics of the fruitful activity of V. G. Solovjov. We apply this theory to study bifurcations and symmetry breaking phenomena in a radial power-law potential which is close to the realistic Woods-Saxon one up to about the Fermi energy. Using the realistic parametrization of nuclear shapes we explain the origin of the double-humped fission barrier and the asymmetry in the fission isomer shapes by the bifurcations of periodic orbits. The semiclassical origin of the oblate-prolate shape asymmetry and tetrahedral shapes is also suggested within the improved periodic-orbit approach. The enhancement of shell structures at some surface diffuseness and deformation parameters of such shapes are explained by existence of the simple local bifurcations and new non-local bridge-orbit bifurcations in integrable and partially integrable Fermi systems. We obtained good agreement between the semiclassical and quantum shell-structure components of the level density and energy for several surface diffuseness and deformation parameters of the potentials, including their symmetry breaking and bifurcation values., Comment: 57 pages, 34 figures

Abstract

We have derived an analytical trace formula for the level density of the H\'enon-Heiles potential using the improved stationary phase method, based on extensions of Gutzwiller's semiclassical path integral approach. This trace formula has the correct limit to the standard Gutzwiller trace formula for the isolated periodic orbits far from all (critical) symmetry-breaking points. It continuously joins all critical points at which an enhancement of the semiclassical amplitudes occurs. Abstract

The trace formula for the density of single-particle levels in the two-dimensional radial power-law potentials, which nicely approximate the radial dependence of the Woods-Saxon potential and quantum spectra in a bound region, was derived by the improved stationary phase method. The specific analytical results are obtained for the powers 4 and 6. The enhancement phenomena near the bifurcations of periodic orbits are found to be significant for the description of the fine shell structure. It is shown that the semiclassical trace formulas for the shell corrections to the level density and energy reproduce the quantum results with good accuracy through all the bifurcation (symmetry breaking) catastrophe points, where the standard stationary-phase method breaks down. Abstract

We first give an overview of the shell-correction method which was developed by V. M. Strutinsky as a practicable and efficient approximation to the general selfconsistent theory of finite fermion systems suggested by A. B. Migdal and collaborators. Then we present in more detail a semiclassical theory of shell effects, also developed by Strutinsky following original ideas of M. Gutzwiller. We emphasize, in particular, the influence of orbit bifurcations on shell structure. We first give a short overview of semiclassical trace formulae, which connect the shell oscillations of a quantum system with a sum over periodic orbits of the corresponding classical system, in what is usually called the "periodic orbit theory". We then present a case study in which the gross features of a typical double-humped nuclear fission barrier, including the effects of mass asymmetry, can be obtained in terms of the shortest periodic orbits of a cavity model with realistic deformations relevant for nuclear fission. Next we investigate shell structures in a spheroidal cavity model which is integrable and allows for far-going analytical computation. We show, in particular, how period-doubling bifurcations are closely connected to the existence of the so-called "superdeformed" energy minimum which corresponds to the fission isomer of actinide nuclei. Finally, we present a general class of radial power-law potentials which approximate well the shape of a Woods-Saxon potential in the bound region, give analytical trace formulae for it and discuss various limits (including the harmonic oscillator and the spherical box potentials)., Comment: LaTeX, 67 pp., 30 figures; revised version (missing part at end of 3.1 implemented; order of references corrected)

Abstract

We derive an analytical trace formula for the level density of the two-dimensional elliptic billiard using an improved stationary phase method. The result is a continuous function of the deformation parameter (eccentricity) through all bifurcation points of the short diameter orbit and its repetitions, and possesses the correct limit of the circular billiard at zero eccentricity. Away from the circular limit and the bifurcations, it reduces to the usual (extended) Gutzwiller trace formula which for the leading-order families of periodic orbits is identical to the result of Berry and Tabor. We show that the circular disk limit of the diameter-orbit contribution is also reached through contributions from closed (periodic and non-periodic) orbits of hyperbolic type with an even number of reflections from the boundary. We obtain the Maslov indices depending on deformation and energy in terms of the phases of the complex error and Airy functions. We find enhancement of the amplitudes near the common bifurcation points of both short-diameter and hyperbolic orbits. Abstract

Classical periodic orbits responsible for emergence of the superdeformed shell structures for single-particle motions in spheroidal cavities are identified and their relative contributions to the shell structures are evaluated. Both prolate and oblate superdeformations (axis ratio about 2:1) as well as prolate hyperdeformation (axis ratio about 3:1) are investigated. Fourier transforms of quantum spectra clearly show that three-dimensional periodic orbits born out of bifurcations of planar orbits in the equatorial plane become predominant at large prolate deformations, while butterfly-shaped planar orbits bifurcated from linear orbits along the minor axis are important at large oblate deformations., Comment: 18 pages including 21 PS figures, REVTeX with epsf.sty

Abstract

A study of the adherence of yeast Candida albicans cells to oral surfaces using an assay of the binding of (35S)methionine-labeled C. albicans cells to saliva-coated hydroxylapatite (SHA) beads reveals different extents of adherence for the various C. albicans strains. Glucose depletion and growth at 28 degrees Celsius facilitate the binding. C. albicans ATCC 10261 binding is facilitated by statherin or proline-rich protein-containing fractions. Yeast cell adherence to the SHA beads is enhanced by neuraminidase treatment of the beads due to the exposure of glycoprotein receptors that participate in the binding by neuraminidase activity.

Abstract

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: 3D computed tomographic angiography (3DCTA) has been used recently for the evaluation of intracerebral aneurysms, but it is difficult to use this technique to visualize aneurysms near the base of the skull because of the presence of bone. Subtracted 3DCTA could replace digital subtraction angiography (DSA) for evaluation of aneurysms near the base of the skull if the 2 methods were to give similar results. The aim of this study was to compare the evaluation of aneurysms of the internal carotid artery (ICA) near the base of the skull by subtracted 3DCTA and DSA. METHODS: CTA and DSA were obtained in 25 patients with unruptured aneurysms of the ICA. To create subtracted 3DCTA images, we used a volume subtraction (VS) method, wherein nonenhanced volume data are subtracted from enhanced volume data. CTA and DSA were reviewed by 2 neuroradiologists who performed the detection and characterization of aneurysms of the ICA by using 2D multiplanar reformatted (MPR) and VS- and nonsubtracted (NS)-3DCTA images with volume rendering techniques. RESULTS: DSA detected 29 aneurysms in the 25 patients. VS-3DCTA detected all 29 aneurysms in the 25 patients and was equivalent to DSA for evaluating their characteristics (location, size, and direction). NS-3DCTA detected 19 (1 cavernous, 4 ophthalmic, 1 superior hypophyseal, 7 posterior communicating, and 6 anterior choroidal artery) of these 29 aneurysms, but it could not characterize ophthalmic and superior hypophyseal artery aneurysms because they were only partly visible on NS-3DCTA because of bony structures. 2D-MPR images detected all but the small aneurysms (24 of 29 detected). VS-3DCTA and 2D-MPR could visualize all branching arteries (ophthalmic, posterior communicating, and anterior choroidal) detected by DSA, but NS-3DCTA could not visualize ophthalmic arteries because of the presence of bony structures. CONCLUSION: VS-3DCTA can be used as an alternative to DSA for preoperative examination of aneurysms near the skull base, where it provides equivalent identification and characterization.

Abstract

We have performed soft X-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (SXARPES) of microwave plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition diamond films with different B concentrations in order to study the origin of the metallic behavior of superconducting diamond. SXARPES results clearly show valence band dispersions with a bandwidth of ~23 eV and with a top of the valence band at gamma point in the Brillouin zone, which are consistent with the calculated valence band dispersions of pure diamond. Boron concentration-dependent band dispersions near the Fermi level (EF) exhibit a systematic shift of EF, indicating depopulation of electrons due to hole doping. These SXARPES results indicate that diamond bands retain for heavy boron doping and holes in the diamond band are responsible for the metallic states leading to superconductivity at low temperature. A high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy spectrum near EF of a heavily boron-doped diamond superconductor is also presented.

Total surgical resection is the gold standard in the treatment of craniopharyngioma. However, there is concern that aggressive surgical resection might result in high rates of endocrinologic, metabolic, and behavioral morbidities. Subtotal resection (SR) with subsequent radiation therapy (RT) may reduce surgical complications, but it may also increase the risk of tumor recurrence and radiation-induced side effects. Therefore, the optimal surgical strategy remains debatable.

Abstract

Terahertz and sub-terahertz waves are unexplored waves range between infrared waves and microwaves. This range features with unique characteristics of both light straightness and electromagnetic wave transmission. Terahertz and sub-terahertz waves are attractively new diagnose method of inner objects because they are safer compared to normal non-destructive inspection methods involving high energy, such as X-rays. Hereby, a novel non-destructive inspection method for concrete and reinforced concrete structures is proposed using sub-terahertz reflection imaging. In Japan, where earthquakes and other natural disasters frequently occur, this technique is expected to be used to remotely inspect the deterioration of damaged RC structures that are difficult to access to. The results of this study confirm that various types of condition changes in concrete can be found by using this sub-terahertz imaging method. The presence of cracks/voids in concrete and under the finishing layers was successfully detected based on differences in reflectance. Moreover, the presence of metals inside/behind the concrete specimens was able to be identified. It was also confirmed that the decline rate of the mechanical properties of concrete could be evaluated according to the decrease in reflectance due to the existence of fine cracks.

Abstract

Colonization of the oral cavity by Candida albicans involves adherence of yeast cells to oral surfaces. An assay was developed to measure the attachment of C. albicans cells, metabolically labelled with [35S]methionine, to saliva-coated hydroxylapatite (SHA) beads--a model for the tooth surface. Using this assay approximately 1.26 x 10(6) C. albicans cells (50.5% of input cells) attached to the SHA beads (12 mg). Different strains of C. albicans adhered to varying degrees to SHA beads, but in general adherence was promoted by growth of cells at 28 degrees C and by starvation of cells for glucose. Proteins in human whole, or parotid, saliva samples were fractionated by gel filtration (Sephacryl S-200 column) and fractions were adsorbed to hydroxylapatite beads. Fractions that contained proline-rich proteins or statherin promoted attachment of C. albicans ATCC 10261 cells. Neuraminidase treatment of SHA beads, but not of cells, significantly increased yeast cell binding to the SHA beads. Neuraminidase activity in the oral cavity may unmask glycoprotein receptors involved in the adhesion of C. albicans to saliva-coated surfaces.
