1. Sr-Doped Molecular Hydrogen: Synthesis and Properties of SrH$_{22}$

Abstract

Recently, several research groups announced reaching the point of metallization of hydrogen above 400 GPa. Following the mainstream of extensive investigations of compressed polyhydrides, in this work we demonstrate that small (4 atom %) doping of molecular hydrogen by strontium leads to a dramatic reduction in the metallization pressure to about 200 GPa. Studying the high-pressure chemistry of the Sr-H system at 56-180 GPa, we observed the formation of several previously unknown compounds: C2/m-Sr$_3$H$_{13}$, pseudocubic SrH$_6$, SrH$_9$ with cubic F-43m Sr sublattice, and pseudotetragonal P1-SrH$_{22}$, the metal hydride with the highest hydrogen content discovered so far. Unlike Ca and Y, strontium forms molecular semiconducting polyhydrides, whereas calcium and yttrium polyhydrides are high-Tc superconductors with an atomic H sublattice. The latter phase, SrH$_{22}$ or Sr$_{0.04}$H$_{0.96}$, may be considered as a convenient model of the consistent bandgap closure and metallization of hydrogen. Using the impedance measurements in diamond anvil cells at 300-440 K, we estimated the direct bandgap of the Pm-3n-like compound P1-SrH$_6$ to be 0.44-0.51 eV at 150 GPa, and its metallization pressure to be 220 GPa. Together with the machine learning interatomic potentials, the impedance spectroscopy allowed us to estimate the diffusion coefficients of hydrogen D$_H$ = 1.0-2.8 E-10 m$^2$/s in SrH$_6$ and 1.2-2.1 E-9 m$^2$/s in P1-SrH$_{22}$ at 500-600 K., Comment: Supporting information was compressed and reduced by 2 times to 36 figures

4. Grain boundaries in minerals: atomic structure, phase transitions, and effect on strength of polycrystals

Abstract

Grain boundaries (GBs) and interfaces in polycrystalline materials are significant research subjects in the field of materials science. Despite a more than 50-year history of their study, there are still many open questions. The main challenge in studying interfacial structures is the extreme complexity of their experimental and theoretical observation and description. The presence of phase-like states at grain boundaries called complexions requires even more effort in their study. Here, we demonstrate the effect of grain boundaries on the properties of polycrystalline minerals on the example of the $\Sigma$5[310](001) grain boundary in periclase (MgO). Using the combination of extended evolutionary algorithm USPEX and modern machine-learning interatomic potentials, we explore the configuration space of the specified grain boundary and predict its possible phase-like states. In addition to the widely studied CSL-type structure, we found several stable GB complexions with various atomic densities at the boundary plane. Analysis of grain boundary excess volume of the structures revealed the successive stages of GB failure under the tensile applied in the normal direction of the boundary plane. Our results demonstrate that interfacial chemistry and structural diversity can be surprisingly rich even in seemingly simple and thoroughly investigated materials. The phenomena we observe here are not specific to MgO and should be general.

Abstract

Abstract Crystal structure prediction is a central problem of crystallography and materials science, which until mid-2000s was considered intractable. Several methods, based on either energy landscape exploration or, more commonly, global optimization, largely solved this problem and enabled fully non-empirical computational materials discovery. A major shortcoming is that, to avoid expensive calculations of the entropy, crystal structure prediction was done at zero Kelvin, reducing to the search for the global minimum of the enthalpy rather than the free energy. As a consequence, high-temperature phases (especially those which are not quenchable to zero temperature) could be missed. Here we develop an accurate and affordable solution, enabling crystal structure prediction at finite temperatures. Structure relaxation and fully anharmonic free energy calculations are done by molecular dynamics with a forcefield (which can be anything from a parametric forcefield for simpler cases to a trained on-the-fly machine learning interatomic potential), the errors of which are corrected using thermodynamic perturbation theory to yield accurate results with full ab initio accuracy. We illustrate this method by applications to metals (probing the P–T phase diagram of Al and Fe), a refractory covalent solid (WB), an Earth-forming silicate MgSiO3 (at pressures and temperatures of the Earth’s lower mantle), and ceramic oxide HfO2.

6. Evolutionary algorithm for prediction of the atomic structure of two-dimensional materials on substrates

Abstract

Today the study of two-dimensional (2D) materials has become one of the key objectives of materials science. Unlike their three-dimensional counterparts, 2D materials can simultaneously demonstrate unique transport and mechanical properties due to their dimensionality and quantum size effect. In their fabrication and application, 2D materials are usually located on top of the substrate or combined into heterostructures, which makes their structures and properties strongly depend on the nature and quality of the environment. Here, we present a novel method for studying the atomic structures of two-dimensional materials and epitaxial thin films on arbitrary substrates. The method can predict successful stages of epitaxial growth and the regions of stability of each atomic configuration with experimental parameters of interest. We demonstrate the performance of our methodology in the prediction of the atomic structure of MoS2 on Al2O3 (0001) substrate. The method is also applied to study the CVD growth of graphene and hexagonal boron nitride on Cu (111) substrates. In both cases, stable monolayer and multilayer structures were found. The stability of all the structures in terms of partial pressures of precursors and temperature of growth is predicted within the ab initio thermodynamics approach.

8. Titanium-hydrogen interaction at megabar pressure

Abstract

The process of transport of metal particles ($\mathit{ejecta}$) in gases is the subject of recent works in the field of nuclear energetics. We studied the process of dissolution of titanium ejecta in warm dense hydrogen at megabar pressure. Thermodynamic and kinetic properties of the process were investigated using classical and quantum molecular dynamics methods. We estimated the dissolution time of ejecta, the saturation limit of titanium atoms with hydrogen and the heat of dissolution. It was found that particles with a radius of 1 $\mu m$ dissolve in hydrogen in time of $1.5 \cdot 10^{-2} \ \mu s$, while the process of mixing can be described by diffusion law. The presented approach demonstrates the final state of the titanium-hydrogen system as a homogenized fluid with completely dissolved titanium particles. This result can be generalized to all external conditions under which titanium and hydrogen are atomic fluids.

Abstract

Materials with high optical constants are of paramount importance for efficient light manipulation in nanophotonics applications. Recent advances in materials science have revealed that van der Waals (vdW) materials have large optical responses owing to strong in-plane covalent bonding and weak out-of-plane vdW interactions. However, the optical constants of vdW materials depend on numerous factors, e.g., synthesis and transfer method. Here, we demonstrate that in a broad spectral range (290–3300 nm) the refractive index n and the extinction coefficient k of Bi2Se3 are almost independent of synthesis technology, with only a ~10% difference in n and k between synthesis approaches, unlike other vdW materials, such as MoS2, which has a ~60% difference between synthesis approaches. As a practical demonstration, we showed, using the examples of biosensors and therapeutic nanoparticles, that this slight difference in optical constants results in reproducible efficiency in Bi2Se3-based photonic devices.

Abstract

Noble transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) such as PtS2 and PtSe2 show significant potential in a wide range of optoelectronic and photonic applications. Noble TMDCs, unlike standard TMDCs such as MoS2 and WS2, operate in the ultrawide spectral range from ultraviolet to mid-infrared wavelengths; however, their properties remain largely unexplored. Here, we measured the broadband (245–3300 nm) optical constants of ultrathin PtS2 and PtSe2 films to eliminate this gap and provide a foundation for optoelectronic device simulation. We discovered their broadband absorption and high refractive index both theoretically and experimentally. Based on first-principle calculations, we also predicted their giant out-of-plane optical anisotropy for monocrystals. As a practical illustration of the obtained optical properties, we demonstrated surface plasmon resonance biosensors with PtS2 or PtSe2 functional layers, which dramatically improves sensor sensitivity by 60 and 30%, respectively.

Abstract

Conjugated coordination polymers attract attention as materials for electrochemical energy storage, mostly as cathode materials for supercapacitors. Faradaic capacity may be introduced to such materials using redox-active building blocks, metals, or ligands. Using this strategy, a novel hybrid cathode material was developed based on a Ni2+ metal-organic polymer. The proposed material, in addition to double-layer capacitance, shows high pseudocapacitance, which arises from the contributions of both the metal center and ligand. A tailoring strategy in the ligand design allows us to minimize the molecular weight of the ligand, which increases its gravimetric energy. According to computational results, the ligand makes the prevailing contribution to the pseudocapacitance of the material. Different approaches to metal–organic polymer (MOP) synthesis were implemented, and the obtained materials were examined by FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, powder XRD, SEM/EDX (energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy), TEM, and thermal analysis. Energy-storage performance was comparatively studied with cyclic voltammetry (CV) and galvanostatic charge–discharge (GCD). As a result, materials with an excellent discharge capacity were obtained, reaching the gravimetric energy density of common inorganic cathode materials.

Conference Name: ACM/IEEE International Conference on Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) Date of Conference: 07-10 March 2022 We present pilot data for one of the first comprehensive investigations of Intergroup Contact Theory [1], [2] in the context of human-robot interaction. Applying an actual intergroup contact procedure known to affect intergroup attitudes among humans (e.g., [3]), we examined whether human-robot interaction as a positive intergroup contact would change participants' evaluation of robots. Our data from 28 student participants ( N=15 in the interaction condition and N=13 in the no-interaction condition) suggest that after the participant and robot self-disclosed to each other (Fast Friendship Task), participants (1) felt more positive emotions towards robots, (2) perceived robots as warmer, and (3) identified robots as more similar to humans. These preliminary findings invite further research on the application of Intergroup Contact Theory in examining social human-robot interaction and its possible contributions to understanding human psychology.

Abstract

Study Purpose The DRAGON 1 trial aims to assess training, implementation, safety and feasibility of combined portal- and hepatic-vein embolization (PVE/HVE) to accelerate future liver remnant (FLR) hypertrophy in patients with borderline resectable colorectal cancer liver metastases. Methods The DRAGON 1 trial is a worldwide multicenter prospective single arm trial. The primary endpoint is a composite of the safety of PVE/HVE, 90-day mortality, and one year accrual monitoring of each participating center. Secondary endpoints include: feasibility of resection, the used PVE and HVE techniques, FLR-hypertrophy, liver function (subset of centers), overall survival, and disease-free survival. All complications after the PVE/HVE procedure are documented. Liver volumes will be measured at week 1 and if applicable at week 3 and 6 after PVE/HVE and follow-up visits will be held at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after the resection. Results Not applicable. Abstract

The DRAGON 1 trial aims to assess training, implementation, safety and feasibility of combined portal- and hepatic-vein embolization (PVE/HVE) to accelerate future liver remnant (FLR) hypertrophy in patients with borderline resectable colorectal cancer liver metastases. The DRAGON 1 trial is a worldwide multicenter prospective single arm trial. The primary endpoint is a composite of the safety of PVE/HVE, 90-day mortality, and one year accrual monitoring of each participating center. Secondary endpoints include: feasibility of resection, the used PVE and HVE techniques, FLR-hypertrophy, liver function (subset of centers), overall survival, and disease-free survival. All complications after the PVE/HVE procedure are documented. Liver volumes will be measured at week 1 and if applicable at week 3 and 6 after PVE/HVE and follow-up visits will be held at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after the resection. Not applicable. Abstract

Recently, several research groups announced reaching the point of metallization of hydrogen above 400 GPa. Despite notable progress, detecting superconductivity in compressed hydrogen remains an unsolved problem. Following the mainstream of extensive investigations of compressed metal polyhydrides, here small doping of molecular hydrogen by strontium is demonstrated to lead to a dramatic reduction in the metallization pressure to ≈200 GPa. Studying the high-pressure chemistry of the Sr–H system, the formation of several new phases is observed: C2/m-Sr3H13, pseudocubic SrH6, SrH9 with cubic F43m-Sr sublattice, and pseudo tetragonal superionic P1-SrH22, the metal hydride with the highest hydrogen content (96 at%) discovered so far. High diffusion coefficients of hydrogen in the latter phase DH = 0.2–2.1 × 10−9 m2 s−1 indicate an amorphous state of the H-sublattice, whereas the strontium sublattice remains solid. Unlike Ca and Y, strontium forms molecular semiconducting polyhydrides, whereas calcium and yttrium polyhydrides are high-TC superconductors with an atomic H sublattice. The discovered SrH22, a kind of hydrogen sponge, opens a new class of materials with ultrahigh content of hydrogen.

24. Driver social desirability scale: A Turkish adaptation and examination in the driving context

Abstract

Self-report data collection methods are widely used techniques to gather information in studies related to road safety. One of the most considerable limitations of self-reports is social desirability bias. One way to overcome the possible detrimental effects of socially desirable responding is to control it by using social desirability scales. With respect to that, the present study aims to adapt the Driver Social Desirability Scale into Turkish, examine its construct validity, and investigate the relationship between social desirability and driving-related measures. A total of 351 drivers between the ages of 19 and 59 completed a questionnaire including a demographic information form, the Driver Behavior Questionnaire (DBQ), the Driver Skill Inventory (DSI), the Two-Dimensional Social Desirability Scale (SDS), and the Driver Social Desirability Scale (DSDS). Factor analysis supported the two-factor structure of the DSDS in the Turkish sample. Social desirability correlated positively with age and driving experience. Female drivers reported higher levels of driver impression management, while male drivers scored higher on self-deception. Driver impression management was associated negatively with violations and perceptual-motor skills and positively with safety skills. Lastly, driver self-deception was positively related to violations, positive driver behaviors, perceptual-motor skills, and safety skills. The study shows that the Turkish version of the DSDS is a reliable and structurally valid instrument with incremental validity compared to the general social desirability measure in predicting driving-related outcomes.

Abstract

Noble transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) such as PtS2 and PtSe2 show significant potential in a wide range of optoelectronic and photonic applications. Noble TMDCs, unlike standard TMDCs such as MoS2 and WS2, operate in the ultrawide spectral range from ultraviolet to mid-infrared wavelengths; however, their properties remain largely unexplored. Here, we measured the broadband (245–3300 nm) optical constants of ultrathin PtS2 and PtSe2 films to eliminate this gap and provide a foundation for optoelectronic device simulation. We discovered their broadband absorption and high refractive index both theoretically and experimentally. Based on first-principle calculations, we also predicted their giant out-of-plane optical anisotropy for monocrystals. As a practical illustration of the obtained optical properties, we demonstrated surface plasmon resonance biosensors with PtS2 or PtSe2 functional layers, which dramatically improves sensor sensitivity by 60 and 30%, respectively.

26. Unexpected difficult airway with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism

Failed endotracheal intubation and inadequate ventilation with insufficient oxygenation may lead to serious complications, even death. Anesthesiologists rarely encounter unexpected difficult airway problems in daily routine. Management of an unexpectedly difficult airway consists of laryngeal mask ventilation, gum-elastic bougie and video laryngoscopy-assisted intubation. Gum-elastic bougie is the easiest and cheapest tool used in case of an unexpected difficult intubation occurring in the operating room. Case: A 53-year-old male patient with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism presented as an unexpected difficult intubation after the induction of anesthesia. No pathological finding or predictor of difficult intubation was present. In addition, bag-mask ventilation was poor and inadequate. The patient was finally successfully intubated with a gum-elastic bougie. Conclusion: A difficult airway has been described in patients with a variety of endocrine disorders, including pituitary diseases, but not with hypogonadism. There may be an unrevealed relationship between hypogonadism and difficult airway. Gum-elastic bougie is still the most attainable and effective tool in the operation room in this situation. Abstract

Atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) present a promising platform for numerous photonic applications due to excitonic spectral features, possibility to tune their constants by external gating, doping, or light, and mechanical stability. Utilization of such materials for sensing or optical modulation purposes would require a clever optical design, as by itself the 2D materials can offer only a small optical phase delay – consequence of the atomic thickness. To address this issue, we combine films of 2D semiconductors which exhibit excitonic lines with the Fabry-Perot resonators of the standard commercial SiO2/Si substrate, in order to realize topological phase singularities in reflection. Around these singularities, reflection spectra demonstrate rapid phase changes while the structure behaves as a perfect absorber. Furthermore, we demonstrate that such topological phase singularities are ubiquitous for the entire class of atomically thin TMDCs and other high-refractive-index materials, making it a powerful tool for phase engineering in flat optics. As a practical demonstration, we employ PdSe2 topological phase singularities for a refractive index sensor and demonstrate its superior phase sensitivity compared to typical surface plasmon resonance sensors.

Abstract

Recently, several research groups announced reaching the point of metallization of hydrogen above 400 GPa. Despite notable progress, detecting superconductivity in compressed hydrogen remains an unsolved problem. Following the mainstream of extensive investigations of compressed metal polyhydrides, here small doping of molecular hydrogen by strontium is demonstrated to lead to a dramatic reduction in the metallization pressure to ≈200 GPa. Studying the high-pressure chemistry of the Sr–H system, the formation of several new phases is observed: C2/m-Sr3H13, pseudocubic SrH6, SrH9 with cubic F43m-Sr sublattice, and pseudo tetragonal superionic P1-SrH22, the metal hydride with the highest hydrogen content (96 at%) discovered so far. High diffusion coefficients of hydrogen in the latter phase DH = 0.2–2.1 × 10−9 m2 s−1 indicate an amorphous state of the H-sublattice, whereas the strontium sublattice remains solid. Unlike Ca and Y, strontium forms molecular semiconducting polyhydrides, whereas calcium and yttrium polyhydrides are high-TC superconductors with an atomic H sublattice. The discovered SrH22, a kind of hydrogen sponge, opens a new class of materials with ultrahigh content of hydrogen.

Abstract

Large optical anisotropy observed in a broad spectral range is of paramount importance for efficient light manipulation in countless devices. Although a giant anisotropy has been recently observed in the mid-infrared wavelength range, for visible and near-infrared spectral intervals, the problem remains acute with the highest reported birefringence values of 0.8 in BaTiS3 and h-BN crystals. This issue inspired an intensive search for giant optical anisotropy among natural and artificial materials. Here, we demonstrate that layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) provide an answer to this quest owing to their fundamental differences between intralayer strong covalent bonding and weak interlayer van der Waals interaction. To do this, we made correlative far- and near-field characterizations validated by first-principle calculations that reveal a huge birefringence of 1.5 in the infrared and 3 in the visible light for MoS2. 34. Negative Spillovers Across Partnerships for Responsible Innovation: Evidence from the 2014 Ebola Outbreak

Abstract

Humanity faces ongoing and contemporaneous grand challenges. Occasionally, abrupt shocks escalate a grand challenge’s salience over others. Prior research has advocated forming partnerships to address grand challenges via responsible innovation. Yet, it remains unclear how temporal changes in the salience of a grand challenge impact innovation performances of partnerships. We address this research gap by bridging the literature on issue salience, responsible innovation and interorganizational relationships. We argue that shocks either aid or harm the performance of partnerships for responsible innovation depending on whether their domains are directly or indirectly affected. The Ebola outbreak in 2014 sets the empirical context to test our theory. We find that while the innovation performance of Ebola partnerships formed after the outbreak rose eleven-fold, the performance of partnerships treating Influenza fell by 84.9 percent. Our theory and findings have immediate implications for today’s COVID-19 outbreak, cautioning against salience shifts among concurrent grand challenges.

Abstract

Conjugated coordination polymers attract attention as materials for electrochemical energy storage, mostly as cathode materials for supercapacitors. Faradaic capacity may be introduced to such materials using redox-active building blocks, metals, or ligands. Using this strategy, a novel hybrid cathode material was developed based on a Ni2+ metal-organic polymer. The proposed material, in addition to double-layer capacitance, shows high pseudocapacitance, which arises from the contributions of both the metal center and ligand. A tailoring strategy in the ligand design allows us to minimize the molecular weight of the ligand, which increases its gravimetric energy. According to computational results, the ligand makes the prevailing contribution to the pseudocapacitance of the material. Different approaches to metal–organic polymer (MOP) synthesis were implemented, and the obtained materials were examined by FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, powder XRD, SEM/EDX (energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy), TEM, and thermal analysis. Energy-storage performance was comparatively studied with cyclic voltammetry (CV) and galvanostatic charge–discharge (GCD). As a result, materials with an excellent discharge capacity were obtained, reaching the gravimetric energy density of common inorganic cathode materials.

Abstract

The process of transport of metal particles (ejecta) in gases is the subject of recent works in the field of nuclear energetics. We studied the process of dissolution of titanium ejecta in warm dense hydrogen at hundred GPa pressure. Thermodynamic and kinetic properties of the process were investigated using classical and quantum molecular dynamics methods. We estimated the dissolution time of ejecta, the saturation limit of titanium atoms with hydrogen, and the heat of dissolution. It was found that particles with a radius of 1 μm dissolve in hydrogen in a time of 1.5 × 10 − 2 μ s, while the process of mixing can be described by diffusion law. The presented approach demonstrates the final state of the titanium-hydrogen system as a homogenized fluid with completely dissolved titanium particles. This result can be generalized to all external conditions under which titanium and hydrogen are atomic fluids.

Abstract

The paper deals primarily with problems, not with facts. The main interest is a discussion of questions to be faced if we attempt to get reliable answers about classification and dating of the Medieval pottery produced in Cyprus. After a brief look at the development of research on this class of pottery, the paper concentrates on three main topics. First: the problem of local workshops, second: their stratigraphy and chronology, third: Cypriot glazed pottery in the East Mediterranean context. The results published so far ask obviously for a critical review of the present state of research with regard to the limits imposed by the evidence. The paper tries to differentiate reliable results based on conclusive stratigraphical and comparative evidence from hypotheses of a more speculative character. A critical interpretation of the evidence from the earth serves to define more precisely the problems of future research. It is a long established fact that the development of the Cypriot ceramic production reflects general developments in the Near Eastern and Western Asian region into which Byzantine and Frankish Cyprus was closely integrated. Although the impact of Eastern traditions on the Cypriot manufacture is obvious, the way in which they operated yet needs further critical analysis.
