The ocean has the largest heat capacity of any single component of the climate system and plays a key dominant role in global heat content changes. Several recent studies have found that the Ocean Heat Content (OHC) has increased during the last decades, not only at a global scale, but also at regional/basin scales. To analyse OHC variability in the Iberia-Biscay-Ireland (IBI) region, several Copernicus Marine model and observed derived products are used together to provide multi-product estimations of OHC anomalies over the water column (at layers upper 150 m, 700 m, and 2000 m). This work provides an exhaustive analysis of spatial and temporal variability of OHC in the Northeast Atlantic region providing an analysis of area-averaged time series, trend maps, and trends linked with the main water masses found in the IBI region. The analysis of trends reveals that, despite a significant warming of the region in the period 1993–2020 (at rates of 0.4 W/m2), the thermohaline variability of subsurface water masses mainly dominates the OHC variability over the upper 2000 m. Additionally, vertical profiles of OHC trends are investigated, linking them with the vertical distribution of water masses; and describing how coupled inter-annual variability of Sub-Artic Intermediate Water, Mediterranean Outflow Water, and Labrador Sea Water accounts for an important part of the total OHC variability in the region.

We present an overview of the changes expected during the 21st century in key marine parameters (sea surface temperature, sea surface salinity, sea level and waves) in the sector of the NE Atlantic Ocean close to the Spanish shores. Under the A1B scenario, open-sea surface temperatures would increase by 1°C to 1.5°C by 2050 as a consequence of global ocean warming. Near the continental margin, however, the global temperature rise would be counteracted by an enhancement of the seasonal upwelling. Sea surface salinity is likely to decrease in the future, mainly due to the advection of high-latitude fresher waters from ice melting. Mean sea level rise has been quantified as 15-20 cm by 2050, but two contributions not accounted for by our models must be added: the mass redistribution derived from changes in the large-scale circulation (which in the NE Atlantic may be as large as 15 cm in 2050 or 35 cm by 2100) and the increase in the ocean mass content due to the melting of continental ice (for which estimates are still uncertain). The meteorological tide shows very small changes, and therefore extreme sea levels would be higher in the 21st century, but mostly due to the increase in mean sea level, not to an increase in the storminess. The wave projections point towards slightly smaller significant wave heights, but the changes projected are of the same order as the natural variability., En este trabajo se presenta una visión de conjunto de los cambios esperados en el siglo XXI en los principales parámetros marinos (temperatura y salinidad superficiales, nivel del mar y oleaje) en el sector NE del Océano Atlántico más cercano a las costas españolas. Bajo el escenario A1B, se prevé que la temperatura superficial en mar abierto suba del orden de 1-1.5°C para el año 2050, como consecuencia del calentamiento global del océano. Cerca del margen continental, sin embargo, el aumento de la temperatura superficial podría ser contrarrestado por un aumento del afloramiento estacional. La salinidad superficial es probable que disminuya en el futuro, debido principalmente a la advección desde latitudes más altas de aguas provenientes de la fusión de hielos polares. El aumento del nivel del mar obtenido de los modelos se ha cuantificado en 15 a 20 cm para el año 2050, pero esa estima no incluye dos contribuciones adicionales que deben ser añadidas: la redistribución de masa derivada de los cambios en la circulación a gran escala (que en el Atlántico NE se ha estimado en unos 15 cm para 2050 i en 35 cm para 2100) y el aumento de masa debido a la fusión de hielos continentales (para el cual las estimas son todavía inciertas). La marea meteorológica muestra cambios muy pequeños, y por tanto el aumento de los niveles extremos del mar en el siglo XXI serán debidos principalmente al aumento del nivel medio, no a un aumento en la intensidad de las tormentas. Las proyecciones de oleaje apuntan a olas de altura significante ligeramente más pequeñas; de todos modos, los cambios proyectados son del mismo orden que la variabilidad natural.

La presente publicación, el primer volumen de dos libros previstos sobre el tema, se centra en describir los resultados de los trabajos que se han realizado desde Puertos del Estado, el IMEDEA y AEMET para la caracterización de la evolución de las variables climáticas a lo largo del Siglo XXI. Los datos expuestos son el resultado de un enorme esfuerzo de computación numérica establecido a lo largo de 7 años en una serie de proyectos de investigación financiados por el Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad y por el Ministerio de Medio Ambiente, y su generación ha sido también posible gracias a la colaboración con multitud de centros internacionales de referencia, como MeteoFrance y Mercatorocean en Francia, o el National Oceanography Centre, en Reino Unido. Estos trabajos se enmarcan, además, en la estrategia española sobre cambio climático, y están coordinados con las actividades de la Oficina Española de Cambio Climático.

Also, some authors have claimed that during the XXI century the likely increase of the salinity in the basin (i.e. the decrease of the halosteric component of sea level), could partially compensate the projected global sea level rise. These claims have generated confusion on the fate of Mediterranean sea level under climate change. In this presentation we will argue that changes in the salinity of the Mediterranean Sea do not have a significant impact on the basin averaged sea level. Furthermore we use a novel approach to combine the information from global and regional models to generate a large ensemble of Mediterranean sea level projections for the XXI century. Our results suggest that under all the scenarios the Mediterranean sea level will rise approximately at the same rate than the NE Atlantic. The projections also show that, in turn, the NE Atlantic sea level will be between 5 and 35 cm higher than global sea level by the end of the XXI century

Comunicación presentada en el 40th CIESM Congress (The Mediterranean Science Commission), celebrada del 28 de octubre al 1 de noviembre de 2013 en Marsella (Francia), We performed 21st century climate change scenario simulations with a Mediterranean regional ocean model in order to assess the sensitivity of changing Mediterranean water masses to boundary forcings. Our study aims to quantify the uncertainty linked to the choice of boundary conditions such as the Atlantic hydrography at the western margin, the river runoffs or the surface fluxes. We particularly focus on changes in mean sea level and thermohaline circulation. Results show that the near-Atlantic hydrographic changes have the strongest influence on the evolution of the Mediterranean water masses.

[ES]En el contexto del proyecto de escenarios de clima oceánico desarrollado por AEMET-EPPEIMEDEA- MeteoFrance se ha utilizado el modelo atmosférico regional de clima RCA3.5 para forzar diferentes modelos oceánicos de circulación, residuos de nivel del mar y oleaje. Como paso previo a la generación de proyecciones regionalizadas atmosféricas y oceánicas se ha evaluado el modelo. Este trabajo analiza los campos de precipitación generados por RCA forzado por el reanálisis de ERA-interim. Para la comparación se ha utilizado como referencia observacional la base de datos en rejilla de Spain02. Se ha realizado un análisis de significación estadística de los resultados. RCA3.5 muestra una variabilidad temporal y sobre todo espacial más próxima a Spain02 que el resto de datasets, incluyendo el reanálisis de ERA-interim con el que fue forzado. También es el que mejor reproduce las estructuras locales de precipitación observadas. Sin embargo, sobreestima la precipitación sobre todo en las montañas. [EN]In the framework of the generation of ocean climate scenarios developed by AEMET-EPPEIMEDEA- MeteoFrance, a regional climate model, RCA 3.5, has been used to force models which simulate the oceanic circulation, sea level and waves. As a previous step RCA fields have been evaluated. This work analizes the precipitation simulated by RCA forced with ERA-interim reanalysis. As observational reference for the comparisons a new gridded precipitation database (Spain02) was used. A complete statistical analysis of significance was conducted for the results. RCA3.5 compares better than any other dataset to Spain02 observations in temporal and, mainly, spatial variability; beating even the reanalysis of ERA-interim used to force the model. Besides, it is the one who better represents the local precipitation structures observed. However, RCA3.5 overestimates the precipitation amounts, mainly in the mountains.

(Estados Unidos) del 24 al 28 de octubre de 2011, The aim of this contribution is to present the VANIMEDAT-2 project, whose objective is to explore the sea level variability under climate change scenarios through the generation of oceanographic projections in the Mediterranean Sea and the NE Atlantic for the 21st century.. It is well known that Atmosphere-Ocean General Circulation Models developed in the framework of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change) do not properly account for regional scale variability; this is especially true for semi-enclosed basins such as the Mediterranean Sea, where the low spatial resolution of global models can neither resolve the exchanges through the Strait of Gibraltar nor the circulation within the basin. The characterization of future oceanographic scenarios is undertaken on the basis of two sets of numerical simulations. i) On one hand, a?3D (baroclinic) model is used to obtain future projections of temperature, salinity, currents and sea level. ii) On the other hand, a barotropic (2D) model is used to simulate the response of sea level to the mechanical atmospheric forcing of atmospheric pressure and winds, which are the main responsible for extreme events (combined with tides in the Atlantic sector of the considered domain). The ultimate product will provide a complete picture of the main hazards that can affect the shoreline in the 21st century, from the slow increase of mean sea level to changes in the extreme regime. In order to provide not only the mean projected state but also the uncertainties in the projections, an ensemble of simulations will be performed using different forcing conditions from several atmospheric models, large scale oceanic models providing the boundary conditions and different scenarios of green house gases and aerosols emissions. In this contribution we will show an overview of the main results obtained so far. In particular, we will focus on the evolution of the thermohaline properties of the Mediterranean Sea under a climate change scenario and its impact on mean sea level. As a complementary result, we will show the changes projected in the distribution of sea level extreme events due to the atmospheric mechanical forcing and in the sea surface temperature extreme events (hot and cold spells).

Póster presentado en la General Assembly 2011 de la European Geosciences Union (EGU), celebrada del 3 al 8 de abril de 2011 en Viena (Austria), The Mediterranean Sea is known to show high interannual variability in terms of air-sea fluxes, surface circulation and deep water formation. It also experiences decadal variability as proved by the Eastern Mediterranean Transient event (EMT) in the 90s and the recent Western Mediterranean Transition (WMT) in the 2000s. The existence of long-term trends in the deep layers has also been reported. Therefore, simulating and understanding the evolution of the Mediterranean Sea over the last decades is considered as quite a challenging task for the ocean and climate modelling community. To tackle this issue, we set up a high-resolution, physically and temporally consistent dataset for the forcing of long-term Mediterranean Sea simulations. This dataset called ARPERA covers the period 1958-2008 at a 50 km horizontal resolution. It is based on a dynamical downscaling of ECMWF atmospheric products (reanalysis and analysis) using the ARPEGE Regional Climate Model and the spectral nudging technique: model spatial scales larger than 250 km are forced to follow the reanalysis whereas the small scales (250 - 50 km) are free to develop. This dynamical technique is often called a “poor-man regional reanalysis”. We first analyse the sea wind field and air-sea fluxes of ARPERA, showing a good agreement with independent dataset and an added-value compared to state-of-the-art reanalysis (Herrmann and Somot, 2008; Aznar et al., 2010; Josey et al. 2010). Secondly, we used the ARPERA dataset to force daily a regional ocean model (NEMOMED8, 10 km, SST relaxation, no SSS relaxation) over the 1960-2008 period starting from initial conditions representative of the beginning of the 60s. In addition to the interannual air-sea fluxes, we applied interannual variability for the river runoff fluxes, the Black Sea freshwater inputs and the near-Atlantic characteristics. After a validation of the long-term stability and interannual variability of this hindcast simulation (surface circulation, sea level, SST, SSS, heat content, salt content, deep water formation, Gibraltar transports), we show that it is able to reproduce the EMT in the 90s (Beuvier et al., 2010) and the WMT in Winter 2004-05 (Herrmann et al., 2010). Next steps towards a more realistic representation of the long-term variability of the Mediterranean Sea are: - an increase of the horizontal resolution of the forcing (10 km) - a better description of the near-Atlantic influence (in particular for the sea level variability) - rivers and Black Sea data for the recent years - the use of a coupled atmosphere-land-river-ocean regional climate model instead of a forced ocean regional model - the implementation of in-situ and satellite data-assimilation - the use of an improved version of the regional ocean model

Trabajo presentado en EOF2010, I Encuentro de la Oceanografía Física Española, celebrada del 13 al 15 de octubre de 2010 en Barcelona (España), y organizada por el Centro Mediterráneo de Investigaciones Marinas y Medioambientales del CSIC (ICM-CSIC) y el Laboratorio de Ingeniería Marítima de la Universitat Politécnica de Catalunya (LIM-UPC), Se ha realizado una simulación de escenario de cambio climático (IPCC‐A2) para el área del mar Mediterráneo mediante el modelo de océano baroclínico regional NEMOMED8. Para llevarla a cabo, se ha forzado dicho modelo con flujos atmosféricos correspondientes al escenario A2 entre 1960 y 2099, obtenidos de la versión de alta resolución del modelo ARPEGE‐Climate. Bajo esa hipótesis de escenario y de acuerdo con los resultados, se aprecia un incremento generalizado de la temperatura y salinidad en el mar Mediterráneo entre 2000 y 2099, tanto en la superficie (+0.26°C/década y +0.06 psu/década, respectivamente) como en toda la columna de agua (+0.11°C/década y +0.04 psu/década). Como consecuencia de los incrementos mencionados, la componente estérica de la altura superficial del mar presenta un descenso en el mar Mediterráneo durante el siglo XXI, provocado fundamentalmente por el aumento de la salinidad que contrarresta el efecto causado por el calentamiento de la columna de agua. Los resultados de la simulación muestran asimismo un descenso de los procesos convectivos a finales del siglo XXI, puesto de manifiesto al observarse una reducción de la profundidad de la capa de mezcla máxima anual en las principales áreas de formación de aguas profundas en el Mediterráneo: golfo de León, mar Adriático, mar Egeo y cuenca levantina. Por otro lado, según los resultados el transporte neto de agua en el estrecho de Gibraltar variaría entre +0.05 Sv para el periodo de clima actual (1960‐1999) hasta +0.07 Sv en 2099. Este aumento se debe básicamente al incremento del flujo de agua entrante obtenido de 2000 a 2099, que equilibra la pérdida de agua por evaporación experimentada por el mar Mediterráneo durante esos años

Trabajo presentado en EOF2010, I Encuentro de la Oceanografía Física Española, celebrada del 13 al 15 de octubre de 2010 en Barcelona (España), y organizada por el Centro Mediterráneo de Investigaciones Marinas y Medioambientales del CSIC (ICM-CSIC) y el Laboratorio de Ingeniería Marítima de la Universitat Politécnica de Catalunya (LIM-UPC), La obtención de escenarios climáticos marinos para el siglo XXI es una acuciante necesidad tanto para gestores como para científicos. Las predicciones realizadas por los modelos globales del IPCC son un buen punto de partida para múltiples aplicaciones. Sin embargo, para el Mediterráneo este no es el caso. La baja resolución de los modelos del IPCC (1° a 2°) y su poca fiabilidad en el Mediterráneo hacen necesaria la generación de escenarios climáticos regionales que mejoren la calidad de las predicciones en la zona. En este contexto los proyectos VANIMEDAT‐2 y ESCENARIOS tienen como objetivo la generación de escenarios climáticos marinos regionales para el Mediterráneo y el Atlántico nororiental. En esta presentación se mostrarán los primeros resultados obtenidos en estos proyectos concernientes al oleaje y a la componente atmosférica del nivel del mar. Por una parte se han realizado simulaciones de oleaje con el modelo WAM (1/6° de resolución) y de nivel del mar barótropo (storm surge) con el modelo HAMSOM (1/4° x 1/6°). Ambos modelos han sido forzados con las salidas del modelo atmosférico ARPEGE (~50km / 6 horas) para tres escenarios de emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero (A1b, A2 y B1). Los análisis preliminares indican, para final del siglo XXI, una reducción de un 10‐20 % en la intensidad del oleaje bajo todos los escenarios en el Mediterráneo Occidental pero un aumento en los eventos extremos. La componente atmosférica del nivel del mar experimentará una ligera bajada de 4 cm en invierno y una subida de 2 cm en verano de media en toda la cuenca, mientras que los extremos también aumentarán con la excepción del Adriático y el Egeo

Ponencia presentada en: XXIX Jornadas Científicas de la AME y el VII Encuentro Hispano Luso de Meteorología celebrado en Pamplona, del 24 al 26 de abril de 2006. La presente contribución presenta resultados de un análisis estadístico de extremos de viento en la cuenca mediterránea. Mediante el análisis de los máximos anuales de viento a 10-metros se obtienen estimaciones de niveles y periodos de retorno de dicha variable. Asimismo, se propone un método estadístico alternativo, basado en la técnica de los L-momentos regionales. Esta técnica regional permite incrementar el tamaño de la muestra, utilizando los datos de una región homogénea en lugar de los de una única localización, reduciéndose de este modo la incertidumbre. Los análisis estadísticos de vientos extremos realizados por medio de los vientos HIPOCAS proporcionan una detallada valoración de las áreas de fuertes vientos en aguas del Mediterráneo.

Changes in marine climate due to global warming can potentially have dramatic consequences for a country like Spain where the ocean plays a key role in the country's socioeconomics. In Spain, a large fraction of the population lives in or close to coastal areas, and the national economy strongly relies on tourism, fisheries and marine transport activities (Kersting, 2016). Global warming would impact on the marine environment in different ways.

In order to favour the downstream from the European MyOcean service of large scale ocean forecasts to the national service of coastal ocean forecasts, studies of new methods improving the downscaling between global or regional ocean models and coastal ones are in progress. In the framework of PREVIMER and MyOcean projects respectively, IFREMER and Mercator Ocean studied in parallel the impact of the spectral nudging method. In the present work, the performance of spectral nudging was assessed using two regional hydrodynamic models: one of Mediterranean Sea and one of the Iberia-Biscay-Ireland (IBI) area. They are both forced by a coarser global circulation model (GCM) (PSY2V4/Mercator Ocean). This technique prevents large and unrealistic departures between the global circulation model (GCM) driving fields and the regional model fields at the GCM spatial scales. Regarding the Med Sea application, the model’s temperature T and salinity S are spectrally nudged towards PSY2V4 solution using nudging terms in the model tracer equations: a semi prognostic approach has been chosen. The simulated fields are then compared with those estimated by no-nudged model and confronted to observations. Results show that the spectral nudging is able to constrain error growth in large-scale circulation without significant damping of the meso-scales eddy fields. Regarding the IBI application, T, S as well as current speed U, V have been nudged towards PSY2V4 solution: the increments are directly added as source and sink terms in the model prognostic equations. PSY2V4, nudged IBI and no-nudged IBI models as well as the present operational IBI model weekly restarted by PSY2V4 are compared and confronted to observations. The large scale and meso-scale structures are better represented off the shelf area where IBI is nudged and the bias significantly decreases on the shelf where the high frequency and high resolution physics of free IBI is better resolved than the assimilated PSY2V4 model one.
