1. Coinduction Plain and Simple

Abstract

Coinduction refers to both a technique for the definition of infinite streams, so-called codata, and a technique for proving the equality of coinductively specified codata. This article first reviews coinduction in declarative programming. Second, it reviews and slightly extends the formalism commonly used for specifying codata. Third, it generalizes the coinduction proof principle, which has been originally specified for the equality predicate only, to other predicates. This generalization makes the coinduction proof principle more intuitive and stresses its closeness with structural induction. The article finally suggests in its conclusion extensions of functional and logic programming with limited and decidable forms of the generalized coinduction proof principle.

2. In Praise of Impredicativity: A Contribution to the Formalisation of Meta-Programming

Abstract

Processing programs as data is one of the successes of functional and logic programming. Higher-order functions, as program-processing programs are called in functional programming, and meta-programs, as they are called in logic programming, are widespread declarative programming techniques. In logic programming, there is a gap between the meta-programming practice and its theory: The formalisations of meta-programming do not explicitly address its impredicativity and are not fully adequate. This article aims at overcoming this unsatisfactory situation by discussing the relevance of impredicativity to meta-programming, by revisiting former formalisations of meta-programming and by defining Reflective Predicate Logic, a conservative extension of first-order logic, which provides a simple formalisation of meta-programming., Comment: Under consideration for publication in Theory and Practice of Logic Programming

3. An Almost Classical Logic for Logic Programming and Nonmonotonic Reasoning

Abstract

The model theory of a first-order logic called N^4 is introduced. N^4 does not eliminate double negations, as classical logic does, but instead reduces fourfold negations. N^4 is very close to classical logic: N^4 has two truth values; implications in N^4 are material, like in classical logic; and negation distributes over compound formulas in N^4 as it does in classical logic. Results suggest that the semantics of normal logic programs is conveniently formalized in N^4: Classical logic Herbrand interpretations generalize straightforwardly to N^4; the classical minimal Herbrand model of a positive logic program coincides with its unique minimal N^4 Herbrand model; the stable models of a normal logic program and its so-called complete minimal N^4 Herbrand models coincide., Comment: 16 pages. 7. Potentials and Limitations of Contributive Social Capital Systems

Abstract

The increase of online communication has been accompanied by several problems. Lies and fake news spread easily - even during disasters - and people find it difficult to assess each other's trust and competence. To counter these issues we conceptualized, designed, and investigated a Contributive Social Capital (CSC) system. It is based on network analysis, a novel modelling with market systems, and certifications. Several experiments indicate that it can create transparency regarding a user's CSC and can thereby counter the issues., Die steigende Anzahl von Online Kommunikation brachte auch Probleme mit sich. Unwahrheiten und "Fake News" verbreiten sich schnell und selbst während Katastrophen und Menschen haben Probleme Vertrauenswürdigkeit und Kompetenz zu erkennen. Um diese Probleme zu beheben wurde in dieser Arbeit ein "Contributive Social Capital" (CSC) System untersucht, das Netzwerkanalyse, Marktmodellierung, und Zertifikate beinhaltet. Diverse Experimente deuten darauf hin, dass sich damit das CSC eines Nutzers darstellen lässt um die Probleme anzugehen.

The field of declarative AI programming is briefly characterized. Its recent developments in Germany are reflected by a workshop as part of the scientific congress KI-93 at the Berlin Humboldt University. Eleven contributed papers treat knowledge revision/program transformation, types, constraints, and type-constraint combinations.

Abstract

This article first reminds of simulation unification, a non-standard unification proposed at the 18th International Conference on Logic Programming (ICLP 2002) for making logic programming capable of querying semistructured data on the Web. This article further argues that, beyond querying semistructured data on the Web, simulation unification has a potential for Web querying of multimedia data and semantic metadata and for Web searching of data of all kinds.

Abstract

Reactivity, the ability to detect and react to events, is an essential functionality in many information systems. In particular, Web systems such as online marketplaces, adaptive (e.g., recommender) sys- tems, and Web services, react to events such as Web page updates or data posted to a server. This article investigates issues of relevance in designing high-level programming languages dedicated to reactivity on the Web. It presents twelve theses on features desirable for a language of reactive rules tuned to programming Web and Semantic Web applications.

Abstract

Contemporary higher education with its large audiences suffers from passivity of students. Enhancing the classroom with a digital backchannel can contribute to establishing and fostering active participation of and collaboration among students in the lecture. Therefore, we conceived the digital backchannel Backstage specifically tailored for the use in large classes. At an early phase of development we tested its core functionalities in a smallscale user study. The aim of the study was to gain first impressions of its adoption, and also to form a basis for further steps in the conception of Backstage. Regarding adoption we particularly focused on how Backstage influences the participants' questioning behavior, a salient aspect in learning. We observed that during the study much more questions were uttered on Backstage than being asked without backchannel support. Regarding the further development of Backstage we capitalized on the participants' usability feedback. The key of the refinement is the integration of presentation slides in Backstage, which leads to an interesting reconsideration of the user interactions of Backstage. Abstract

The article discusses the uses of wikis in business and describes the importance and significance of semantic wikis for helping to maintain data structure and knowledge management. Wikis allow open editing of content by all users, but structured data is generally more difficult to locate. Semantic wikis solve this problem by making use of metadata to link data together. This allows semantic wiki software to locate data structures that ontologies would otherwise never be able to locate. This improves search query results and overall navigation.
