The self-interaction spin-2 approach to general relativity (GR) has been extremely influential in the particle physics community. Leaving no doubt regarding its heuristic value, we argue that a view of the metric field of GR as nothing but a stand-in for a self-coupling field in flat spacetime runs into a dilemma: either the view is physically incomplete in so far as it requires recourse to GR after all, or it leads to an absurd multiplication of alternative viewpoints on GR rendering any understanding of the metric field as nothing but a spin-2 field in flat spacetime unjustified.

We demonstrate the use of a ring-shaped Bose-Einstein condensate as a rotation sensor by measuring the interference between two counter-propagating phonon modes imprinted azimuthally around the ring. We observe rapid decay of the excitations, quantified by quality factors of at most $Q \approx 27$. We numerically model our experiment using the c-field methodology, allowing us to estimate the parameters that maximise the performance of our sensor. We explore the damping mechanisms underlying the observed phonon decay, and identify two distinct Landau scattering processes that each dominate at different driving amplitudes and temperatures. Our simulations reveal that $Q$ is limited by strong damping of phonons even in the zero temperature limit. We perform an experimental proof-of-principle rotation measurement using persistent currents imprinted around the ring. We demonstrate a rotation sensitivity of up to $\Delta \Omega \approx 0.3$ rad/s from a single image, with a theoretically achievable value of $\Delta \Omega \approx 0.04$ rad/s in the atomic shot-noise limit. This is a significant improvement over the shot-noise-limited $\Delta \Omega \approx 1$ rad/s sensitivity obtained by Marti et al. [Phys. Rev. The upcoming Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) will address several outstanding puzzles in modern nuclear physics. Topics such as the partonic structure of nucleons and nuclei, the origin of their mass and spin, among others, can be understood via the study of high energy electron-proton ($ep$) and electron-nucleus ($e$A) collisions. Achieving the scientific goals of the EIC will require a novel electron-hadron collider and detectors capable to perform high-precision measurements, but also dedicated tools to model and interpret the data. To aid in the latter, we present a general-purpose $e$A Monte Carlo (MC) generator - BeAGLE. In this paper, we provide a general description of the models integrated into BeAGLE, applications of BeAGLE in $e$A physics, implications for detector requirements at the EIC, and the tuning of the parameters in BeAGLE based on available experimental data. Specifically, we focus on a selection of model and data comparisons in particle production in both $ep$ and $e$A collisions, where baseline particle distributions provide essential information to characterize the event. Energetic quarks liberated from hadrons in nuclear deep-inelastic scattering propagate through the nuclear medium, interacting with it via several processes. These include quark energy loss and nuclear interactions of forming hadrons. One manifestation of these interactions is the enhanced emission of low-energy charged particles, referred to as grey tracks. We use the theoretical components of the BeAGLE event generator to interpret grey track signatures of parton transport and hadron formation by comparing its predictions to E665 data. We extend the base version of BeAGLE by adding four different options for describing parton energy loss. The E665 data we used consists of multiplicity ratios for fixed-target scattering of 490 GeV muons on Xe normalized to deuterium as a function of the number of grey tracks. We compare multiplicity ratios for E665 grey tracks to the predictions of BeAGLE, varying the options and parameters to determine which physics phenomena can be identified by these data. We find that grey tracks are unaffected by modifications of the forward production. Thus their production must be dominated by interactions with hadrons in the backward region. This offers the advantage that selecting certain particles in the forward region is unlikely to bias a centrality selection. We see a strong correlation between the number of grey tracks and the in-medium path length. Our energy loss model does not reproduce the suppression observed in the projectile region. We see an underprediction of the proton production rate in backward kinematics, suggesting that a stronger source of interaction with the nuclear medium is needed for accurate modeling. We present an open source model that allows quantitative prediction of the effects of testing on the rate of spread of COVID-19 described by R, the reproduction number, and on the degree of quarantine, isolation and lockdown required to limit it. The paper uses the model to quantify the outcomes of different test types and regimes, and to identify strategies and tests that can reduce the rate of spread and R value by a factor of between 1.67 and 33.3, reducing it to between 60% and 3% of the initial value., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, in English

Despite 93.1% to 95.8% of the UK adult population having been vaccinated and currently 83.5% to 89.8% of adults having received at least two doses (1), and despite many households testing twice a week with lateral flow tests (2), R at the time of writing is 0.9 to 1.1, with a growth rate range for England of between -1% and +1% (3). Furthermore, up to 30% of infected individuals are going on to experience Long Covid (4). The crisis is far from over and as new variants of concern like Omicron spread, the situation is not under control, even in the highly vaccinated and tested UK and far less so in many countries. The problem is likely to be replicated in other countries with currently low infection levels as isolation is eased in future, even if these countries reach a high level of vaccination. Additionally, concerns have been raised about fall in immunity by 6 months after receiving the Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines (5), and the ability of Omicron to re-infect and cause illness in vaccinated people, with urgent booster jabs now being given to attempt to mitigate this. Understanding various fundamental properties of nucleons and nuclei are among the most important scientific goals at the upcoming Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). With the unprecedented opportunity provided by the next-generation machine, the EIC might provide definitive answers to many standing puzzles and open questions in modern nuclear physics. Here we investigate one of the golden measurements proposed at the EIC, which is to obtain the spatial gluon density distribution within a lead ($Pb$) nucleus. The proposed experimental process is the exclusive $J/\psi$ vector-meson production off the $Pb$ nucleus - $e+Pb\rightarrow e'+J/\psi+Pb'$. The Fourier transformation of the momentum transfer $|t|$ distribution of the coherent diffraction is the transverse gluon spatial distribution. In order to measure it, the experiment has to overcome an overwhelmingly large background arising from the incoherent diffractive production, where the nucleus $Pb'$ mostly breaks up into fragments of particles in the far-forward direction close to the hadron-going beam rapidity. In this paper, we systematically study the rejection of incoherent $J/\psi$ production by vetoing products from these nuclear breakups - protons, neutrons, and photons, which is based on the BeAGLE event generator and the most up-to-date EIC Far-forward Interaction Region design. The achieved vetoing efficiency, the ratio between the number of vetoed events and total incoherent events, ranges from about 80% - 99% depending on $|t|$, which can resolve at least the first minimum of the coherent diffractive distribution based on the Sar$\it{t}$re model. Noether's theorems are widely praised as some of the most beautiful and useful results in physics. However, if one reads the majority of standard texts and literature on the application of Noether's first theorem to field theory, one immediately finds that the ``canonical Noether energy-momentum tensor" derived from the 4-parameter translation of the Poincar\'e group does not correspond to what's widely accepted as the ``physical'' energy-momentum tensor for central theories such as electrodynamics. This gives the impression that Noether's first theorem is in some sense not working. In recognition of this issue, common practice is to ``improve" the canonical Noether energy-momentum tensor by adding suitable ad-hoc ``improvement" terms that will convert the canonical expression into the desired result. On the other hand, a less common but distinct method developed by Bessel-Hagen considers gauge symmetries as well as coordinate symmetries when applying Noether's first theorem; this allows one to uniquely derive the accepted physical energy-momentum tensor without the need for any ad-hoc improvement terms in theories with exactly gauge invariant actions. $\dots$ Using the converse of Noether's first theorem, we show that the Bessel-Hagen type transformations are uniquely selected in the case of electrodynamics, which powerfully dissolves the methodological ambiguity at hand. We then go on to consider how this line of argument applies to a variety of other cases, including in particular the challenge of defining an energy-momentum tensor for the gravitational field in linearized gravity. The spin structure function of the neutron is traditionally determined by measuring the spin asymmetry of inclusive electron deep inelastic scattering (DIS) off polarized3He nuclei. In such experiments, nuclear effects can lead to large model dependencies in the interpretation of experimental data. Here we study the feasibility of suppressing such model dependencies by tagging both spectator protons in the process of DIS off neutrons in3He at the forthcoming Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). This allows reconstructing the momentum of the struck neutron to ensure it was nearly at rest in the initial state, thereby reducing sensitivity to nuclear corrections, and suppress contributions from electron DIS off protonsin3He. Using realistic accelerator and detector configurations, we find that the EIC can probe the neutron spin structure from xB of 0.003 to 0.651. We further find that the double spectator tagging method results in reduced uncertainties bya factor of 4 on the extracted neutron spin asymmetries over all kinematics, and by a factor of 10 in the low-xB region,thereby providing valuable insight to the spin and flavor structure of nucleons, Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Recent research has highlighted the non-uniqueness problem of energy-momentum tensors in linearized gravity; many different tensors are published in the literature, yet for particular calculations a unique expression is required. It has been shown that (A) none of these spin-2 energy-momentum tensors are gauge invariant and (B) the Noether and Hilbert energy-momentum tensors are not, in general, equivalent; therefore uniqueness criteria is difficult to specify. Conventional wisdom states that the various published energy-momentum tensors for linearized gravity can be derived from the canonical Noether energy-momentum tensor of spin-2 Fierz-Pauli theory by adding ad-hoc 'improvement' terms (the divergence of a superpotential and terms proportional to the equations of motion), that these superpotentials are in some way unique or physically significant, and that this implies some meaningful connection to the Noether procedure. To explore this question of uniqueness, we consider the most general possible energy-momentum tensor for linearized gravity with free coefficients using the Fock method. We express this most general energy-momentum tensor as the canonical Noether tensor, supplemented by the divergence of a general superpotential plus all possible terms proportional to the equations of motion. We then derive systems of equations which we solve in order to prove several key results for spin-2 Fierz-Pauli theory, most notably that there are infinitely many conserved energy-momentum tensors derivable from the 'improvement' method, and there are infinitely many conserved symmetric energy-momentum tensors that follow from specifying the Belinfante superpotential alone. $\dots$ since there are infinitely many energy-momentum tensors of this form, no meaningful or unique connection to Noether's first theorem can be claimed by application of the canonical Noether 'improvement' method., Comment: 25 pages

In a recent publication a procedure was developed which can be used to derive completely gauge invariant models from general Lagrangian densities with $N$ order of derivatives and $M$ rank of tensor potential. This procedure was then used to show that unique models follow for each order, namely classical electrodynamics for $N = M = 1$ and linearized Gauss-Bonnet gravity for $N = M = 2$. In this article, the nature of the connection between these two well explored physical models is further investigated by means of an additional common property; a complete dual formulation. First we give a review of Gauss-Bonnet gravity and the dual formulation of classical electrodynamics. The dual formulation of linearized Gauss-Bonnet gravity is then developed. It is shown that the dual formulation of linearized Gauss-Bonnet gravity is analogous to the homogenous half of Maxwell's theory; both have equations of motion corresponding to the (second) Bianchi identity, built from the dual form of their respective field strength tensors. In order to have a dually symmetric counterpart analogous to the non-homogenous half of Maxwell's theory, the first invariant derived from the procedure in $N = M = 2$ can be introduced. The complete gauge invariance of a model with respect to Noether's first theorem, and not just the equation of motion, is a necessary condition for this dual formulation. We show that this result can be generalized to the higher spin gauge theories, where the spin-$n$ curvature tensors for all $N = M = n$ are the field strength tensors for each $n$. All light has structure, but only recently it has become possible to construct highly controllable and precise potentials so that most laboratories can harness light for their specific applications. In this chapter, we review the emerging techniques for high-resolution and configurable optical trapping of ultracold atoms. We focus on optical deflectors and spatial light modulators in the Fourier and direct imaging configurations. These optical techniques have enabled significant progress in studies of superfluid dynamics, single-atom trapping, and underlie the emerging field of atomtronics. The chapter is intended as a complete guide to the experimentalist for understanding, selecting, and implementing the most appropriate optical trapping technology for a given application. After introducing the basic theory of optical trapping and image formation, we describe each of the above technologies in detail, providing a guide to the fundamental operation of optical deflectors, digital micromirror devices, and liquid crystal spatial light modulators. We also describe the capabilities of these technologies for manipulation of trapped ultracold atoms, where the potential is dynamically modified to enable experiments, and where time-averaged potentials can realise more complex traps. Multiple methods for deriving the energy-momentum tensor for a physical theory exist in the literature. The most common methods are to use Noether's first theorem with the 4-parameter Poincar\'{e} translation, or to write the action in a curved spacetime and perform variation with respect to the metric tensor, then return to a Minkowski spacetime. These are referred to as the Noether and Hilbert (metric/ curved space/ variational) energy-momentum tensors, respectively. In electrodynamics and other simple models, the Noether and Hilbert methods yield the same result. Due to this fact, it is often asserted that these methods are generally equivalent for any theory considered, and that this gives physicists a freedom in using either method to derive an energy-momentum tensor depending on the problem at hand. $\dots$ For spin-2, the ideal candidate to check this equivalence for a more complicated model, there exist many energy-momentum tensors in the literature, none of which are gauge invariant, so it is not clear which expression one hopes to obtain from the Noether and Hilbert approaches unlike in the case of e.g. electrodynamics. It has been shown, however, that the linearized Gauss-Bonnet gravity model (second order derivatives, second rank tensor potential) has an energy-momentum tensor that is unique, gauge invariant, symmetric, conserved, and trace-free when derived from Noether's first theorem (all the same properties of the physical energy-momentum tensor of electrodynamics). This makes it the ideal candidate to check if the Noether and Hilbert methods coincide for a more complicated model. It is proven here using this model as a counterexample, by direct calculation, that the Noether and Hilbert energy-momentum tensors are not, in general, equivalent., Comment: 35 pages

Curvature tensors of higher-spin gauge theories have been known for some time. In the past, they were postulated using a generalization of the symmetry properties of the Riemann tensor (curl on each index of a totally symmetric rank-$n$ field for each spin-$n$). For this reason they are sometimes referred to as the generalized 'Riemann' tensors. In this article, a method for deriving these curvature tensors from first principles is presented; the derivation is completed without any a priori knowledge of the existence of the Riemann tensors or the curvature tensors of higher-spin gauge theories. To perform this derivation, a recently developed procedure for deriving exactly gauge invariant Lagrangian densities from quadratic combinations of $N$ order of derivatives and $M$ rank of tensor potential is applied to the $N = M = n$ case under the spin-$n$ gauge transformations. This procedure uniquely yields the Lagrangian for classical electrodynamics in the $N = M = 1$ case and the Lagrangian for higher derivative gravity (`Riemann' and `Ricci' squared terms) in the $N = M = 2$ case. It is proven here by direct calculation for the $N = M = 3$ case that the unique solution to this procedure is the spin-3 curvature tensor and its contractions. The spin-4 curvature tensor is also uniquely derived for the $N = M = 4$ case. In other words, it is proven here that, for the most general linear combination of scalars built from $N$ derivatives and $M$ rank of tensor potential, up to $N=M=4$, there exists a unique solution to the resulting system of linear equations as the contracted spin-$n$ curvature tensors. We experimentally study emergence of microcanonical equilibrium states in the turbulent relaxation dynamics of a two-dimensional chiral vortex gas. Same-sign vortices are injected into a quasi-two-dimensional disk-shaped atomic Bose-Einstein condensate using a range of mechanical stirring protocols. The resulting long-time vortex distributions are found to be in excellent agreement with the meanfield Poisson-Boltzmann equation for the system describing the microcanonical ensemble at fixed energy $\cal{H}$ and angular momentum $\cal{M}$. The equilibrium states are characterized by the corresponding thermodynamic variables of inverse temperature $\hat{\beta}$ and rotation frequency $\hat{\omega}$. We are able to realize equilibria spanning the full phase diagram of the vortex gas, including on-axis states near zero-temperature, infinite temperature, and negative absolute temperatures. At sufficiently high energies the system exhibits a symmetry-breaking transition, resulting in an off-axis equilibrium phase at negative absolute temperature that no longer shares the symmetry of the container. Since December 2019 the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 has been identified as the cause of the pandemic COVID-19. Early symptoms overlap with other common conditions such as common cold and Influenza, making early screening and diagnosis are crucial goals for health practitioners. The aim of the study was to use machine learning (ML), an artificial neural network (ANN) and a simple statistical test to identify SARS-CoV-2 positive patients from full blood counts without knowledge of symptoms or history of the individuals. The dataset included in the analysis and training contains anonymized full blood counts results from patients seen at the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, at S\~ao Paulo, Brazil, and who had samples collected to perform the SARS-CoV-2 rt-PCR test during a visit to the hospital. Patient data was anonymised by the hospital, clinical data was standardized to have a mean of zero and a unit standard deviation. This data was made public with the aim to allow researchers to develop ways to enable the hospital to rapidly predict and potentially identify SARS-CoV-2 positive patients. We find that with full blood counts random forest, shallow learning and a flexible ANN model predict SARS-CoV-2 patients with high accuracy between populations on regular wards (AUC = 94-95%) and those not admitted to hospital or in the community (AUC=80-86%). Here, AUC is the Area Under the receiver operating characteristics Curve and a measure for model performance. Moreover, a simple linear combination of 4 blood counts can be used to have an AUC of 85% for patients within the community. The normalised data of different blood parameters from SARS-CoV-2 positive patients exhibit a decrease in platelets, leukocytes, eosinophils, basophils and lymphocytes, and an increase in monocytes.

Understanding the role of Quantum Chromodynamics in generating nuclear forces is important for uncovering the mechanism of short-ranged nuclear interactions and their manifestation in short range correlations (SRC). The future Electron-Ion-Collider (EIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory in the US will provide an unprecedented opportunity to systematically investigate the underlying physics of SRC for energies and kinematic regions that are otherwise impossible to reach. We study SRCs in electron-deuteron scattering events using the Monte Carlo event generator BeAGLE. Specifically, we investigate the sensitivity of observables to high internal nucleon momentum in incoherent diffractive $J/\psi$ vector meson production. In a plane wave impulse approximation, the initial state deuteron wavefunction can be accessed directly from the four-momentum of the spectator nucleon. We use realistic physics simulations and far-forward detector simulations of the EIC to fully reveal the physics potential of this exclusive process. We experimentally realize a highly tunable superfluid oscillator circuit in a quantum gas of ultracold atoms and develop and verify a simple lumped-element description of this circuit. At low oscillator currents, we demonstrate that the circuit is accurately described as a Helmholtz resonator, a fundamental element of acoustic circuits. At larger currents, the breakdown of the Helmholtz regime is heralded by a turbulent shedding of vortices and density waves. Although a simple phase-slip model offers qualitative insights into the circuit's resistive behavior, our results indicate deviations from the phase-slip model. A full understanding of the dissipation in superfluid circuits will thus require the development of empirical models of the turbulent dynamics in this system, as have been developed for classical acoustic systems., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

A connection between linearized Gauss-Bonnet gravity and classical electrodynamics is found by developing a procedure which can be used to derive completely gauge invariant models. The procedure involves building the most general Lagrangian for a particular order of derivatives ($N$) and rank of tensor potential ($M$), then solving such that the model is completely gauge invariant (the Lagrangian density, equation of motion and energy-momentum tensor are all gauge invariant). In the case of $N = 1$ order of derivatives and $M = 1$ rank of tensor potential, electrodynamics is uniquely derived from the procedure. In the case of $N = 2$ order of derivatives and $M = 2$ rank of symmetric tensor potential, linearized Gauss-Bonnet gravity is uniquely derived from the procedure.
