1. Subjective Well-Being and Successful Ageing of Older Adults in Eastern Croatia—Slavonia: Exploring Individual and Contextual Predictors.

Abstract

The process of population ageing with socioeconomic and political implications necessitates the creation of sustainable social strategies aimed at societal inclusion, support of subjective well-being and successful ageing of older adults. Therefore, the aim of this cross-sectional study was to explore individual and contextual factors and predictors which impede the possibility of successful ageing. The study was conducted from January to June 2024 through a questionnaire involving 403 elderly participants who live in the Eastern region of Croatia—Slavonia. The Diener Scale of Subjective Well-being and Self-assessment of Successful Ageing Scale were used in this research. A separate and model contribution of predictors (gender, age, subjective age, residence, level of education, marital status, comorbidities, Satisfaction with Life Scale and Prosperity Scale) were examined using bivariate and multivariate regression. Multivariate regression differentiated a statistically significant model, which as a whole explains between 41% and 55% of the variance of the present negative assessment of successful ageing, correctly classifying 80% of cases. The significant predictors included subjective age, place of residence, level of education, comorbidities, Satisfaction with Life Scale, and Prosperity Scale. Abstract

Uvod: Uslíjed demografskih i gospodarskih promjena životni vijek stanovnika je produljen te raste prevalencija arterijske hipertenzije (API) na globalnoj razini. Poznata je povezanost visokog indexa tjelesne mase s pojavnosti velikog broja kroničnih bolesti koji negativno koreliraju s kakvoćom života oboljelih. U Hrvatskoj je 2019. godine 65 % odraslih imalo prekomjernu tjelesnu masu ili pretilost, te je Hrvatska na samom vrhu europskih zemalja prema udjelu osoba s prekomjernom tjelesnom masom i pretilošću. Šećema bolest predstavlja ozbiljan globalan javnozdravstveni problem zbog svoje visoke incidencije, prevalencije i ozbiljnih komplikacija. Do sada provedena istraživanja govore da u Hrvatskoj samo 60 % oboljelih od šećerne bolesti (ŠBT2) ima dijagnosticiranu bolest. Prikladna razina zdravstvene pismenosti temeljna je za sposobnost upravljanja bolešću l donošenju zadovoljavajućih zdravstvenih odluka. Cilj je bio: identificirati najranjiviju skupinu hospitaliziranih bolesnika (s niskom razinom zdravstvene pismenosti, s pretilosti, AH-om i ŠBT2) ; ispitati kakvoću života povezanu sa zdravljem te ispitati postoji li povezanost između zdravstvene pismenosti i kakvoće života ovih bolesnika. Ispitanici i metode: U istraživanje su bili uključeni svi punoljetni hospitalizirani bolesnici OŽB Požega u razdoblju od srpnja do listopada 2020. godini. Kao instrument istraživanja korištena je analizirana i potvrđena hrvatska inačica testa funkcionalne zdravstvene pismenosti SAHLCA-50. Kao instrument ispitivanja kakvoće života koristila se hrvatska inačica instrumenta SF-36. Rezultati: Od ukupno 500 ispitanika, njih 40 (8 %) bilo je zdravstveno nepismeno, pretilo, te su imali AH i ŠBT2. Ispitanici koji su bili zdravstveno nepismeni, pretili i imaju AH i ŠBT2, značajno su bili nezadovoljniji fizičkim funkcioniranjem, percepcijom općeg zdravlja i ukupnim tjelesnim zdravljem, s vitalnošću i energijom, psihičkim zdravljem, ukupnim duševnim zdravljem, ukupnom kakvoćom života i ocjenom z.drav1ja u prošloj godini u odnosu na ostale ispitanike Zaključak: Ovim se istraživanjem identificirala populacija kojoj je potreban poseban multimodalan edukativni pristup s ciljem podizanja razine zdravstven pismenosti koja će posljedično dovesti do bolje kakvoće života oboljelih od ovih kroničnih nezaraznih bolesti.

4. Connectedness and Successful Aging of Older Adults in Croatia.

Abstract

Connectedness is a multidimensional human experience that is essential to successful aging. The aims of this cross-sectional study were to assess connectedness and self-perception of successful aging in older people, to examine whether there are differences in relation to basic characteristics, and to examine whether there is a connection between connectedness and self-perception of successful aging. The respondents were elderly people in the Republic of Croatia. Data were collected using two validated scales: Croatian versions of the Register–Connectedness Scale for Older Adults and the Self-Assessment Scale of Successful Aging. The study included 824 respondents, of which 319 (38.7%) were men and 505 (61.3%) were women. The median age was 72 years. The median connectivity of the respondents was 8.9 (IQR= 7.6–10.2), and the median rating of successful aging was 3.25 (IQR = 1–5). Spearman's correlation coefficient ρ (p value) was 0.585 (<0.001). Connectivity was rated better by respondents with a higher level of education, who were married, resided in their own homes, used modern technologies, and were active in the community. There is a significant positive association between connectedness and the self-perception of successful aging overall, as well as in all individual connectedness domains. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

5. Connection between glycemic variability obtained using the UniGluko system and the quality of life people with type 1 diabetes

Abstract

Research has shown that glycemic variability increases the risk of the development of acute and chronic complications with diabetes. Accordingly, the assessment of glycemic variability is of great importance to determine the quality of life for people suffering from diabetes. Objective: To examine the connection between glycemic variability and the quality of life for people with type 1 diabetes who use self-monitoring blood glucose devices. Respondents and methods: 42 respondents participated in the research with an average age of 39.6, who are treated with intensified insulin therapy. For the purpose of glycemic variability assessment, an innovative uniGluko system is used, which enables the display of glycemia in a unique graphic interface in the form of numeric values within the last three months from which a glycemic variability index was calculated as well as a general information survey, a survey on the quality of life from the World Health Organization (WHOQOL – BREF) and a short questionnaire regarding illness perception (Brief – IPQ). Results: By usage of standard deviation as a glyemic variability measure, statistically significant results have been obtained and they demonstrate that lower glycemic variability is connected to better quality of life (rs=-0.4571; p=0.0023), higher satisfaction with health (rs=-0.3186; p=0.0398) and reduced impact of disease on emotional life (rs=0.4097; p=0.,0071). Lower glucose variability implies reduced impact of disease on everyday life (rs=0.3091; p=0.0464), reduced incidence of symptoms (rs=0.3441; p=0.0255), and patients’ sense that they have more control over disease (rs=-0.5185; p=0.0004). Conclusion: The glycemic variability has a negative impact on life quality and health of patients with diabetes type 1.

Abstract

Pogače buče, kao i pogače uljane repice, nastaju kao nusproizvodi prilikom proizvodnje ulja te sadrže visok udio proteina i antioksidanasa. Kako bi se povećala iskoristivost nusproizvoda, a i smanjila količina otpada, povećava se broj istraživanja koja se provode u svrhu povećanja upotrebe nusproizvoda iz prehrambenih industrija u proizvodnji funkcionalno obogaćenih proizvoda. Cilj ovoga rada bio je provesti enzimsku hidrolizu pogača uljarica (pogača buče i uljane repice) te hidrolizatima ispitati stupanj hidrolize, antioksidacijsku aktivnost (FRAP i DPPH metodom), te odrediti in vitro probavljivost proteina. Provedena enzimska hidroliza s proteazom na pogačama uljarica, pri istim uvjetima hidrolize, pokazala je različiti utjecaj na pogače buče i uljane repice. Hidrolizati proteina pogače uljane repice pokazuju znatno veću antioksidacijsku aktivnost od hidrolizata pogače buče, dok hidrolizati pogače buče pokazuju veću probavljivost proteina od hidrolizata pogače uljane repice. Pumpkin cakes, as well as rapeseed cakes, are formed as by-products in oil production and contain a high proportion of protein and antioxidants. In order to increase the usability of by-products, and to reduce the amount of waste, the number of studies conducted to increase the use of by-products from the food industry in the production of functionally enriched products is increasing. The aim of this study was to perform enzymatic hydrolysis of oilseeds (pumpkin and oilseed rape) and to examine the degree of hydrolysis, antioxidant activity (FRAP and DPPH method), and to determine in vitro digestibility of proteins. Conducted enzymatic hydrolysis with protease on oilseed cakes, under the same hydrolysis conditions, showed different effects on pumpkin and oilseed rape cakes. Rapeseed cake protein hydrolysates show significantly higher antioxidant activity than pumpkin cake of proteins hydrolysates, while pumpkin cake hydrolysates show higher digestibility of proteins than rapeseed cake hydrolysates.

9. The influence of different ways of feeding pigs on the quality of fermented sausages

Abstract

Cilj istraživanja bio je odrediti utjecaj hranidbe svinja na kemijski sastav te sastav masnih kiselina trajnih kobasica. Ispitivane su dvije vrste trajnih kobasica. Jedna vrsta je napravljena od mesa svinja hranjenih žirom dok je druga napravljena od mesa svinja hranjenih kontrolnom smjesom. Metodom sušenja određen je udio vode. Uzorci sa žirom sadrže 27 % vode, a kontrolni uzorci sadrže 25% vode. Metoda po Kjeldahl-u je pokazala da uzorci sa žirom sadrže veći udio proteina (41%) od kontrolnih uzoraka (33%). Udio masti, određen metodom po Soxhletu, veći je u kontrolnim uzorcima (34%) nego u uzorcima sa žirom (33%). Usporedbom sastava masnih kiselina u kontrolnim uzorcima i uzorcima sa žirom, veći udio zasićenih masnih kiselina sadrže uzorci sa žirom. Kontrolni uzorci sadrže veći udio višestruko nezasićenih masnih kiselina, a omjer ω-6/ω-3 je u uzorcima sa žirom veći. Stupanj oksidacije, određen TBA testom, veći je u uzorcima s žirom. The aim of the research was to determine the influence of the feeding of pigs on the chemical composition and fatty acids compositionof fermented sausages. Two types of fermented sausages were analysed. One type was made from meat of the pigs fed with acorn while the other one is made from meat of pigs fed with a control mixture. The water content was determined by drying method. Samples with acorn contain 27% water, and control samples contain 25% water. The method by Kjeldahl has shown that the samples with acorn have higher content of protein (41%) than the control samples (33%). The fat content, determined by the Soxhlet method, was higher in the control samples (34%) than in the samples with acorn(33%). By comparing the fatty acid composition in the control and the acorn samples, the larger proportion of saturated fatty acids contain the samples with acorn. Control samples contain a higher proportion of unsaturated fatty acids, the ratio of ω-6 /ω-3 is higher in acorn samples. The degree of oxidation, determined by the TBA test, is higher in the samples with acorn.

10. Influence of Aloe vera extracts on phytopathogenic fungi growth

Abstract

Ekstrakti Aloe vera se sve češće spominju kao jedna od mogućnosti u provođenju mjera zaštite, uz eterična ulja i ekstrakte drugih biljaka. Cilj istraživanja bio je ispitati utjecaj tri ekstrakta (miks, pulpa i sok) u tri različite koncentracije (10³, 10⁴ i 10⁵) na porast micelija šest fitopatogenih gljiva: Diaporthe helianthi, Phomopsis longicolla, Phomopsis viticola, Fusarium graminearum, F. verticilloides i F. solani. Svi ekstrakti su pokazali određeni utjecaj na rast micelija gljiva, bilo da su ga inhibirali ili stimulirali. Utjecaj pojedinih ekstrakata ovisio je o koncentraciji, tipu ekstrakta i gljivičnoj vrsti. Na rast micelija D. helianthi najveći inhibitorni utjecaj imale su koncentracije 10³ i 10⁵ kod ekstrakta miksa i 10⁵ kod pulpe. Na rast micelija P. longicolla najveći inhibitorni utjecaj su imale koncentracije 10⁴ i 10⁵ kod pulpe i soka, dok je ekstrakt miksa stimulirao rast micelija. Porast micelija P. viticola jedino je inhibirala koncentracija 10⁴ kod ekstrakta soka. Rast micelija F. solani su inhibirali svi ekstrakti, kao i F. verticilloides. Rast micelija F. graminearum je inhibirao ekstrakt miksa samo 2. dan od inokulacije, a od idućeg mjerenja svi ekstrakti pokazuju stimulativni utjecaj., Aloe vera extracts are often mentioned as a possibility in plant protection, including essential oils and extracts from other plants. The aim of this research was to test the influence of three extracts (mix, pulp and juice) in three different concentrations (10³, 10⁴ and 10⁵) on six phytopathogenic fungi: Diaporthe helianthi, Phomopsis longicolla, Phomopsis viticola, Fusarium graminearum, F. verticilloides and F. solani. All extracts showed an influence on mycelium growth, whether it was inhibition or stimulation. The impact of extracts depended on concentration, extract type and fungi species. Mycelium growth of D. helianthi was mostly inhibited by 10³ and 10⁵ concentrations of mix extract and 10⁵ of pulp extract. Mycelium growth of P. longicolla was mostly inhibited by 10⁴ and 10⁵ concentrations of pulp and juice extract, while the mix extract stimulated the mycelium growth. Mycelium growth of P. viticola was only inhibited by 10⁴ concentration of juice extract. All extracts inhibited the mycelium growth of Fusarium solani and F. verticilloides. Mycelium growth of F. graminearum was inhibited only 2nd day after inoculation, while in the next measuring all extracts stimulated mycelium growth.
