Data on the prevalence of tuberculosis in ESRD are scarce despite the high burden of the disease in developing nations.Methods: A multicenter, cross-sectional study was conducted at eight dialysis centers in Addis Ababa on the prevalence of TB among CKD patients on maintenance hemodialysis from August 2022 to October 2022 G.C. The study enrolled 263 participants selected by systematic random sampling. Data were collected by reviewing the patient’s electronic medical records. The Collected data were analyzed using SPSS version 26.0.Results: Our study found a 27% prevalence of TB in patients with ESRD receiving maintenance hemodialysis (MHD). Pulmonary tuberculosis was the most prevalent form, and lymphadenitis was the most common extra-pulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB). Only 5.6% of the study participants had microbiologic evidence of TB. Chemistry and cytological studies from pleural fluid and imaging evidences were commonly used diagnostic modalities. The presence of HIV infection, longer duration of dialysis (> 1 year), and contact history with a known TB patient were all significantly associated with higher prevalence of TB among the study participants.Conclusion: Although there is a strong association between TB and CKD, there are no local data from Ethiopia. Our study identified a higher prevalence of TB among CKD patients on MHD. Thus, maintaining a high index of suspicion and early diagnosis and treatment of TB among ESRD patients on MHD and use of TB preventive therapy (TPT) is important in decreasing morbidity and mortality.Keywords: dialysis, end stage renal disease, tuberculosis, extrapulmonary TB

The epidermal growth factor receptor, EGFR, is frequently activated in lung cancer and glioblastoma by genomic alterations including missense mutations. The different mutation spectra in these diseases are reflected in divergent responses to EGFR inhibition: significant patient benefit in lung cancer, but limited in glioblastoma. Here, we report a comprehensive mutational analysis of EGFR function. We perform saturation mutagenesis of EGFR and assess function of ~22,500 variants in a human EGFR-dependent lung cancer cell line. This approach reveals enrichment of erlotinib-insensitive variants of known and unknown significance in the dimerization, transmembrane, and kinase domains. Multiple EGFR extracellular domain variants, not associated with approved targeted therapies, are sensitive to afatinib and dacomitinib in vitro. Two glioblastoma patients with somatic EGFR G598V dimerization domain mutations show responses to dacomitinib treatment followed by within-pathway resistance mutation in one case. In summary, this comprehensive screen expands the landscape of functional EGFR variants and suggests broader clinical investigation of EGFR inhibition for cancers harboring extracellular domain mutations., (© 2024. Nascent studies showed that patients with chronic medical illnesses such as diabetes mellitus (DM) and HIV/AIDS are highly vulnerable to face both treatment burden and regimen fatigue. However, an attempt made so far in this sphere in sub-Saharan African health care context is dearth. Thus, this study aimed to determine the level of treatment burden and regimen fatigue of diabetic and HIV patients attending adult diabetic and ART clinics of TASH and explore patients' and health care workers' propositions to reduce treatment burden and regimen fatigue. An explanatory sequential mixed methods study was conducted at the adult HIV and DM clinics of TASH, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from February 01-March 30, 2022. Simple random and purposive sampling techniques were employed to select participants for quantitative and qualitative studies, respectively. Descriptive analysis was done to summarize the quantitative data. Logistic and linear regression analyses were performed to identify predictors of treatment burden and regimen fatigue, respectively. P value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Qualitative data was analyzed by using a thematic analysis. A total of 300 patients (200 diabetes and 100 HIV) were included in the quantitative study. For the qualitative study, 14 patients and 10 health care workers (six nurses and four medical doctors) were included. Participants' mean global Treatment Burden Questionnaire (TBQ) and Treatment Regimen Fatigue Scale (TRFS) score were 28.86 ± 22.13 and - 42.82 ± 17.45, respectively. Roughly, 12% of patients experienced a high treatment burden. The presence of two or more comorbidities (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 7.95, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.59-39.08), daily ingestion of more than five types of prescribed medications (AOR = 6.81, 95%CI 1.59-29.14), and good knowledge about DM and/or HIV (AOR = 0.33, 95%CI 0.12-0.92) were predictors of treatment burden. Poor availability of medications (β = 0.951, p < 0.001) was the only predictor of regimen fatigue. Patients and health care workers primarily proposed to foster self-care efficacy, advance administrative services of the clinic and hospital, and improve healthcare system provision. The findings of this study unveiled that a considerable proportion of patients experienced low levels of treatment burden and regimen fatigue. This study showed that boosting the patients' self-care efficacy, upgrading administrative services of the clinic and hospital, and promoting the healthcare system provision had enormous significance in reducing treatment burden and regimen fatigue. Therefore, when designing patient-specific healthcare interventions for both HIV and diabetic patients' various factors affecting both treatment burden and regimen fatigue should be considered to achieve the desired goals of therapy., (© 2024. Objective: To review patient-report/caregiver-report measures of rehabilitation service use following acquired brain injury (ABI)., Data Sources: Medline, APA PsycINFO, Embase and CINAHL were searched on November 2021 and November 2022. Authors were contacted if measures were not included in manuscripts/appendices., Study Selection: Included articles were empirical research or a research protocol, available in English and described measures of patient report/caregiver report of rehabilitation service use post-ABI via quantitative or qualitative methods. Two reviewers independently screened 5290 records using DistillerSR. Discrepancies were resolved by team adjudication., Data Extraction: Data extraction was piloted with high levels of agreement (k=.94). Data were extracted by a single member with team meetings to seek guidance as needed. Data included administration characteristics (reporter, mode of administration, recall period), psychometric evidence and dimensions assessed (types of services, setting, frequency, duration, intensity, qualitative aspects)., Data Synthesis: One hundred and fifty-two measures were identified from 85 quantitative, 56 qualitative and 3 psychometric studies. Psychometric properties were reported for four measures, all of which focused on satisfaction. Most measures inquired about the type of rehabilitation services used, with more than half assessing functional (eg, physical therapy) and behavioural health rehabilitation services, but fewer than half assessing community and academic reintegration (eg, special education, vocational rehabilitation) or cognitive (eg, neuropsychology) services. Fewer than half assessed qualitative aspects (eg, satisfaction). Recall periods ranged from 1 month to 'since the ABI event' or focused on current use. Of measures that could be accessed (n=71), many included a limited checklist of types of services used. Very few measures assessed setting, frequency, intensity or duration., Conclusions: Despite widespread interest, the vast majority of measures have not been validated and are limited in scope. Background: Consumption of polluted surface waters are leading to waterborne diseases, especially in developing countries, which results in the deaths of millions of people annually around the world. Ethiopia, like the rest of developing countries, suffers a lot of water-associated health problems. Chemical disinfectants are in use to disinfect water with some drawbacks like expensiveness, unavailability, and detrimental effect on human health. Researchers are on the search for non-expensive and locally available methods, and natural plants are the ones in the study. Thus, this study is designed to test Escherichia coli (E. coli) removal efficiency of Moringa stenopetala ( M. stenopetala ) and Cadaba farinosa ( C. farinosa ) from surface water., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from June to July 2021. A 14 L water sample was collected from Lake Hawassa. A 30, 60, and 100 mg weights of the leaf and seed powder dosages of M. stenopetala and C. farinosa at contaminant settling times of 30, 60, and 90 minutes were used. Each 1-L water sample was treated with each of the dosages. E. coli count, temperature, pH and turbidity were measured using standard methods for water and wastewater analysis. Statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version.23 was used for analysis. Treatment differences between plant parts and association between variables were also tested., Result: The result indicated that raw water samples having 18 initial E. coli colonies per 100 mL of water showed zero E. coli colonies per 100 mL of water after treatment with 30 mg dosage of M. stenopetala seed, 30 mg dosage of C. farinosa seed, and 60 mg dosage of M. stenopetala leaf after 90 minutes of settling time, but C. farinosa leaf was unable to reduce E. coli colonies to 0 per 100 mL of water. M. stenopetala leaf showed the highest turbidity reduction of 83.3% at 60 mg dosage. A pH of 7.30 and 8.50 and a temperature of 20°C to 23.5°C were recorded. There was a significant difference in E. coli removal between C. farinosa seed and leaf. Turbidity was identified as a factor that positively affects E. coli removal during M. stenopetala seed and leaf. Dosage and settling time were also identified as predictors of E. coli removal., Conclusion: M. stenopetala and C. farinosa have antimicrobial properties against E. coli , but only M. stenopetala showed E. coli , turbidity, and pH values within the recommended World Health Organization standards. Porcelain insulators prepared from locally available ceramic materials, such as Hosaena clay, quartz, partially replaced feldspar by cullet (rich in alkaline materials). The physical and electrical properties, such as water absorption, apparent porosity, bulk density, linear shrinkage, and dielectric strength as a function of firing temperature, were evaluated. The XRD and AAS measurement results show Hosaenna clay mainly belongs to kaolinite minerals with a sufficient SiO2 (45.60wt. %), Al2O3 (35.52wt. %), and it possesses reasonable plasticity nature. The SEM and Electrical properties measurement shows the porcelain insulators fired at 1150 °C & 1200 °C showed homogenized primary and secondary mullite with optimum glassy phase and good dielectric strength for practical applications. The primary & secondary mullite and glassy phases were grown early at a firing temperature of 1150 and 1200 °C, due to the partial replacement of feldspar by cullet. The porcelain insulator prepared from the composition of 45%clay, 35%feldspar, 10%quartz and 10%cullet and fired at 1200 °C showed dielectric strength 8.9kv/mm, water absorption (0.459%), apparent porosity (1.530%), bulk density (4.29 g/cm 3 ), and linear shrinkage (4.18%). Therefore, incorporating economic alkaline materials such as cullet to improve the alkalinity of the locally available clay materials, Hosaenna clay, Arero feldspar, and Arero quartz reduces the firing temperature with excellent dielectric strength., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest., (© 2022 The Authors. Different types of yeasts and lactic acid bacteria dominate in spontaneously fermented products (food, beverages, and condiments) that are commonly consumed in Ethiopia. The aim of this study was to identify efficient fermentative yeasts from fermented foods, fermented beverages, honey and molasses using genotypic methods. Out of the 70 samples tested, 180 distinct wild yeast isolates were recovered. A total of 23 isolates were selected for genomic analysis based on their basis of biomass yield, fermentation capacity, and leavening performance. The nucleotide sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer ITS-5.8S rDNA region revealed that the indigenous yeast isolates had close relatedness to Saccharomyces cerevisiae , Candida humilis , Kazachstania bulderi , Pichia fermentans and Pichia kudriavzevii with greater than 97% nucleotide similarity. The study shows a high diversity of indigenous wild yeasts in fermented products and that potent strains had higher biomass yield, good gas production and remarkable leavening capacity that indicates their inherent potential for use in the baking industry., (© Association of Food Scientists & Technologists (India) 2020.)

Background: Hypertension is a growing public health problem in many developing countries including Ethiopia. It is a silent killer and most patients are detected to have it incidentally when they are admitted to hospital for unrelated disease or subjected to pre-employment or preoperative medical checkups. Information on the prevalence of hypertension and its associated factors is to be considered vital to focus and improve prevention and control of cardiovascular diseases. The study design was a cross-sectional survey. The study population consisted of adults aged 25-65 years who lived in Jigjiga city of eastern Ethiopia for at least 6 months. Data were collected using a pretested structured questionnaire, and blood pressure was measured using standardized instruments by trained clinical nurses. Hypertension was defined as having Systolic BP ≥ 140 mmHg or Diastolic BP ≥ 90 mmHg or reported use of regular anti-hypertensive medications prescribed by professionals for raised BP. Data were entered into a computer using Epi Info Version 3.5.1 and exported to SPSS version 16.0 for analysis. Multiple logistic regressions were fitted and Odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals were calculated to identify independently associated factors., Results: The prevalence of hypertension was 28.3%. Family history of Hypertension [Adjusted OR 5.7; 95% CI (2.9, 10.9)], having high level of income [Adjusted OR 3.1; 95% CI (1.5, 6.3)], being male [Adjusted OR 2.4; 95% CI (1.3, 4.3)], being above grade 12 [Adjusted OR 2.2; 95% CI (1.2, 3.9)], and having BMI ≥ 25 [Adjusted OR 2.0; 95% CI (1.1, 3.5)] were significantly associated with hypertension., Conclusion: Consistent with the literatures, the prevalence of hypertension was high and may show a hidden epidemic in this population. If established with more robust and nationally representative studies, the finding calls for efficient health screening and regular checkups as well as interventions promoting healthy lifestyles. Accordingly, health promotion regarding hypertension should be provided in the population as means of primary prevention.
