A muon collider would enable the big jump ahead in energy reach that is needed for a fruitful exploration of fundamental interactions. The challenges of producing muon collisions at high luminosity and 10 TeV centre of mass energy are being investigated by the recently-formed International Muon Collider Collaboration. This Review summarises the status and the recent advances on muon colliders design, physics and detector studies. The aim is to provide a global perspective of the field and to outline directions for future work.

Transposable elements (TEs) are mobile genetic elements that constitute half of the human genome. Recent studies suggest that polymorphic non-reference TEs (nrTEs) may contribute to cognitive diseases, such as schizophrenia, through a cis-regulatory effect. The aim of this work is to identify sets of nrTEs putatively linked to an increased risk of developing schizophrenia. To do so, we inspected the nrTE content of genomes from the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex of schizophrenic and control individuals and identified 38 nrTEs that possibly contribute to the emergence of this psychiatric disorder, two of them further confirmed with haplotype-based methods. We then performed in silico functional inferences and found that 9 of the 38 nrTEs act as expression/alternative splicing quantitative trait loci (eQTLs/sQTLs) in the brain, suggesting a possible role in shaping the human cognitive genome structure. To our knowledge, this is the first attempt at identifying polymorphic nrTEs that can contribute to the functionality of the brain. Finally, we suggest that a neurodevelopmental genetic mechanism, which involves evolutionarily young nrTEs, can be key to understanding the ethio-pathogenesis of this complex disorder.

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is responsible for a considerable burden of respiratory disease among children and older adults. Several prophylactic strategies have recently been introduced. We review the available evidence on the interplay between RSV infection and HIV, looking at the specific role of RSV prophylactic strategies in individuals affected by or exposed to HIV. We conducted a systematic review on the association between HIV infection and RSV incidence and severity. We searched in PubMed/MEDLINE for clinical epidemiological studies covering outcomes such as RSV-associated illness, severity, and mortality in individuals affected by or exposed to HIV. A total of 36 studies met the inclusion criteria and were included, the majority conducted in sub-Saharan Africa. There was no compelling evidence suggesting a higher incidence of RSV illness among HIV-infected people. A higher risk of severe disease was consistent among both HIV-positive and HIV-exposed but uninfected (HEU) children. Case fatality rates were also higher for these groups. Evidence on a differing risk among adults was scarce. HIV-positive pregnant women should be given priority for recently approved RSV vaccination, for protection of their newborns. HIV-infected and HEU infants should be considered risk groups for nirsevimab prophylaxis in their first year of life and possibly beyond.

Recent reports have suggested that the reactivation of otherwise transcriptionally silent transposable elements (TEs) might induce brain degeneration, either by dysregulating the expression of genes and pathways implicated in cognitive decline and dementia or through the induction of immune-mediated neuroinflammation resulting in the elimination of neural and glial cells. In the work we present here, we test the hypothesis that differentially expressed TEs in blood could be used as biomarkers of cognitive decline and development of AD. To this aim, we used a sample of aging subjects (age > 70) that developed late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD) over a relatively short period of time (12-48 months), for which blood was available before and after their phenoconversion, and a group of cognitive stable subjects as controls. We applied our developed and validated customized pipeline that allows the identification, characterization, and quantification of the differentially expressed (DE) TEs before and after the onset of manifest LOAD, through analyses of RNA-Seq data. We compared the level of DE TEs within more than 600,000 TE-mapping RNA transcripts from 25 individuals, whose specimens we obtained before and after their phenotypic conversion (phenoconversion) to LOAD, and discovered that 1790 TE transcripts showed significant expression differences between these two timepoints (logFC ± 1.5, logCMP > 5.3, nominal p value

Background: Klebsiella pneumoniae is a concerning pathogen, responsible for hospital-associated outbreaks. Multi drug resistant (MDR) strains are especially hard to treat. We conducted whole-genome sequencing on a MDR K. pneumoniae strain in order to identify genomic features potentially linked to its phenotype. Methods: DNA sequencing was performed on the Illumina iSeq 100 platform. Genome assembly was carried out with SPAdes. The genome was annotated with RASTtk. Typing was performed with MLST and Kaptive. Antibiotic resistance genes were detected with AMRFinderPlus and Abricate, and further verified with BLAST. Results: The strain exhibited resistance to ceftazidime/avibactam and cefiderocol, but remained susceptible to carbapenems. The strain belonged to sequence type ST101, serotype O1:K17. The analysis of antibiotic resistance genes indicated that the strain carried a novel KPC variant, designated as KPC-203, featuring a EL deletion at amino acid position 166–167, within the Ω-loop, and a nine-amino-acid insertion (LAVYTRAPM) at position 259. Sequence alterations were found in porin genes ompK35 and ompK36. Unlike molecular testing, which was able to detect the KPC-203 variant, all phenotypic carbapenemase detection methods achieved negative results. Conclusions: KPC-203, a novel KPC variant, showed a sequence modification in a cephalosporin resistance-associated hotspot. Interestingly, such alterations typically correlate with the restoration of carbapenem susceptibility. We hypothesize that KPC-203 likely led to resistance to ceftazidime/avibactam and cefiderocol, while maintaining susceptibility to carbapenems.

Abstract The presence in nature of species showing drastic differences in lifespan and cancer incidence has recently increased the interest of the scientific community. In particular, the adaptations and the genomic features underlying the evolution of cancer-resistant and long-lived organisms have recently focused on transposable elements (TEs). In this study, we compared the content and dynamics of TE activity in the genomes of four rodent and six bat species exhibiting different lifespans and cancer susceptibility. Mouse, rat, and guinea pig genomes (short-lived and cancer-prone organisms) were compared with that of naked mole rat (Heterocephalus glaber) which is a cancer-resistant organism and the rodent with the longest lifespan. The long-lived bats of the genera Myotis, Rhinolophus, Pteropus and Rousettus were instead compared with Molossus molossus, which is one of the organisms with the shortest lifespan among the order Chiroptera. Despite previous hypotheses stating a substantial tolerance of TEs in bats, we found that long-lived bats and the naked mole rat share a marked decrease of non-LTR retrotransposons (LINEs and SINEs) accumulation in recent evolutionary times.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is increasingly recognized as being implicated in acute illness in older adults, with a significant weight in hospitalizations for respiratory illness and death. By means of a best-evidence review, this paper aims to investigate whether RSV can be considered a forgotten pathogen in older patients, looking at trends in the literature volume and exploring possible epidemiological and clinical features underlying the focus given to it. We then present an assessment of its disease burden and present and future strategies for its reduction, particularly in light of the recent availability of new vaccines.

Abstract Retrotransposons are genetic elements with the ability to replicate in the genome using reverse transcriptase: they have been associated with the development of different biological structures, such as the Central Nervous System (CNS), and their high mutagenic potential has been linked to various diseases, including cancer and neurological disorders. Throughout evolution and over time, Primates and Homo had to cope with infections from viruses and bacteria, and also with endogenous retroelements. Therefore, host genomes have evolved numerous methods to counteract the activity of endogenous and exogenous pathogens, and the APOBEC3 family of mutators is a prime example of a defensive mechanism in this context. In most Primates, there are seven members of the APOBEC3 family of deaminase proteins: among their functions, there is the ability to inhibit the mobilization of retrotransposons and the functionality of viruses. The evolution of the APOBEC3 proteins found in Primates is correlated with the expansion of two major families of retrotransposons, i.e. ERV and LINE-1. In this review, we will discuss how the rapid expansion of the APOBEC3 family is linked to the evolution of retrotransposons, highlighting the strong evolutionary arms race that characterized the history of APOBEC3s and endogenous retroelements in Primates. Moreover, the possible role of this relationship will be assessed in the context of embryonic development and brain-associated diseases.

(1) Background: The widespread use of MALDI-TOF coupled to mass spectrometry has improved diagnostic accuracy by identifying uncommon bacteria. Among Enterobacterales, Pantoea species have been seen to be implicated in several human infections, but their clinical and microbiological framework is currently based on a few anecdotal reports. (2) Methods: We conducted this five-year (2018–2023) single-center study aimed at investigating the prevalence and clinical and microbiological findings of Pantoea species bloodstream infections. (3) Results: Among the 4996 bloodstream infection Gram-negative isolates collected during the study period, Pantoea species accounted for 0.4% (n = 19) of isolates from 19 different patients, 5 of them being pediatric cases. Among Pantoea species isolates, P. agglomerans was the most frequently detected (45%; n = 9) followed by P. eucrina (30%; n = 6) and P. septica (15%; n = 3). Malignancy (35.7%) in adults and malignancy (40%) and cerebrovascular disease following meconium aspiration (40%) in pediatric patients as comorbidities and shivering and/or fever following parenteral infusion (36.8%) as a symptom/sign of Pantoea species bloodstream infection onset were the most frequently observed clinical features. Among adults, primary bloodstream infection was the most frequent (50%), whereas among pediatric patients, the most commonly identified sources of infection were catheter-related (40%) and the respiratory tract (40%). Overall, Pantoea species bloodstream infection isolates displayed high susceptibility to all the antibiotics except for ampicillin (63.2%), fosfomycin (73.7%), and piperacillin/tazobactam (84.2%). Targeted antibiotic treatment was prescribed as monotherapy for adults (71.4%) and combination therapy for pediatric patients (60%). The most prescribed antibiotic regimens were piperacillin/tazobactam (21.4%) in adults and meropenem- (40%) and aminoglycoside-containing (40%) antibiotics in pediatric patients. The overall 28-day all-cause mortality rate was 5.3% (n = 1). (4) Conclusions: The prevalence and 28-day mortality rate of Pantoea species bloodstream infections were low. The prescription of targeted therapy including broad-spectrum antibiotics could indicate an underestimation of the specific involvement of the Pantoea species in the onset of the disease, warranting further studies defining their pathogenic potential.

Background: The relationship between superinfection by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria and mortality among SARS-CoV-2 hospitalized patients is still unclear. Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii and carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales are among the most frequently isolated species when it comes to hospital-acquired superinfections among SARS-CoV-2 patients. Methods: Herein, a retrospective study was carried out using data from adult patients hospitalized for COVID-19. The interaction between in-hospital mortality and rectal carriage and superinfection by carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales and/or carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii was assessed. Results: The incidence of KPC-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae and/or carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii rectal carriage was 30%. Bloodstream infection and/or pneumonia due to KPC-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae and/or carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii occurred in 20% of patients. A higher Charlson comorbidity index (OR 1.41, 95% CI 1.24–1.59), being submitted to invasive mechanical ventilation/ECMO ≥ 96 h (OR 6.34, 95% CI 3.18–12.62), being treated with systemic corticosteroids (OR 4.67, 95% CI 2.43–9.05) and having lymphopenia at the time of admission (OR 0.54, 95% CI 0.40–0.72) were the features most strongly associated with in-hospital mortality. Conclusions: Although KPC-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae and/or carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii rectal carriage, and/or bloodstream infection/pneumonia were diagnosed in a remarkable percentage of COVID-19 patients, their impact on in-hospital mortality was not significant. Further studies are needed to assess the burden of antimicrobial resistance as a legacy of COVID-19 in order to identify future prevention opportunities.

Background: Fosfomycin is an old bactericidal drug that has gained increasing interest in the last decade for its potential use in multi-drug resistant gram-negative infections. However, evidence on fosfomycin susceptibility testing reports a poor correlation between commercial methods vs. reference agar dilution (AD) for Enterobacterales (EB). The study aimed at assessing the performance of two automated systems for the determination of fosfomycin susceptibility in EB clinical isolates. Methods: Fosfomycin susceptibility testing results of two collections of 100 non-duplicate clinical EB strains obtained using two different platforms (BD Phoenix and MicroScan WalkAway Plus) were compared with those obtained by AD. Categorical agreement (CA), major error (ME) and very major error (VME) rates were calculated. Results: BD Phoenix exhibited a 6.9% rate of false-resistant results and achieved a CA of 69%, whereas MicroScan WalkAway Plus achieved 3.7% of false-resistant results and 72% of CA. Both automated systems showed poor detection of resistant isolates, with 49.1% and 56.2% of false-susceptible results for BD Phoenix and Microscan WalkAway Plus, respectively. Conclusions: Overall, agar dilution remains the most suitable method for routine laboratory antimicrobial susceptibility testing of fosfomycin on Enterobacterales strains, given the poor performance of automated systems. The application of both automated systems, in the clinical laboratories reporting of fosfomycin, should be reviewed in light of the accuracy results falling below the acceptable threshold.

Abstract Background The low cost and rapidity of microsatellite analysis have led to the development of several markers for many species. Because in non-invasive genetics it is recommended to genotype individuals using few loci, generally a subset of markers is selected. The choice of different marker panels by different research groups studying the same population can cause problems and bias in data analysis. A priority issue in conservation genetics is the comparability of data produced by different labs with different methods. Here, we compared data from previous and ongoing studies to identify a panel of microsatellite loci efficient for the long-term monitoring of Apennine brown bears (Ursus arctos marsicanus), aiming at reducing genotyping uncertainty and allowing reliable individual identifications overtimes. Results We examined all microsatellite markers used up to now and identified 19 candidate loci. We evaluated the efficacy of 13 of the most commonly used loci analyzing 194 DNA samples belonging to 113 distinct bears selected from the Italian national biobank. We compared data from 4 different marker subsets on the basis of genotyping errors, allelic patterns, observed and expected heterozygosity, discriminatory powers, number of mismatching pairs, and probability of identity. The optimal marker set was selected evaluating the low molecular weight, the high discriminatory power, and the low occurrence of genotyping errors of each primer. We calibrated allele calls and verified matches among genotypes obtained in previous studies using the complete set of 13 STRs (Short Tandem Repeats), analyzing six invasive DNA samples from distinct individuals. Differences in allele-sizing between labs were consistent, showing a substantial overlap of the individual genotyping. Conclusions The proposed marker set comprises 11 Ursus specific markers with the addition of cxx20, the canid-locus less prone to genotyping errors, in order to prevent underestimation (maximizing the discriminatory power) and overestimation (minimizing the genotyping errors) of the number of Apennine brown bears. The selected markers allow saving time and costs with the amplification in multiplex of all loci thanks to the same annealing temperature. Our work optimizes the available resources by identifying a shared panel and a uniform methodology capable of improving comparisons between past and future studies.

Background Thanks to the availability of rich surname, linguistic and genetic information, together with its geographic and cultural complexity, Trentino (North-Eastern Italy) is an ideal place to test the relationships between genetic and cultural traits. Aim We provide a comprehensive study of population structures based on surname and dialect variability and evaluate their relationships with genetic diversity in Trentino. Subjects and methods Surname data were collected for 363 parishes, linguistic data for 57 dialects and genetic data for different sets of molecular markers (Y-chromosome, mtDNA, autosomal) in 10 populations. Analyses relied on different multivariate methods and correlation tests. Results Besides the expected isolation-by-distance-like patterns (with few local exceptions, likely related to sociocultural instances), we detected a significant and geography-independent association between dialects and surnames. As for molecular markers, only Y-chromosomal STRs seem to be associated with the dialects, although no significant result was obtained. No evidence for correlation between molecular markers and surnames was observed. Conclusion Surnames act as cultural markers as do other words, although in this context they cannot be used as reliable proxies for genetic variability at a local scale.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of ceftazidime/avibactam (CZA) resistance among carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE) blood culture isolates as well as the performance of the main carbapenemase phenotypic detection methods to identify KPC variants associated with CZA resistance. Methods: Non-duplicate CPE strains isolated from blood cultures during 2018–2020 were tested for antimicrobial susceptibility. Molecular testing was used to identify carbapenemase-producers. Strains harbouring blaKPC and with a CZA minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) ≥8 mg/L were investigated by sequencing. Subsequentially, five phenotypic carbapenemase detection methods were evaluated on these strains, namely the modified carbapenem inactivation method (mCIM), Rapidec® Carba NP, the disk diffusion synergy test, NG-Test CARBA® 5 and RESIST-5 O.O.K.N.V. Results: Overall, the CZA resistance rate was high (13.7%) and remained relevant (5.9%) excluding metallo-β-lactamases-producers. All isolates harbouringblaKPC mutants (n = 8) were associated with reduced carbapenem MICs and negative results by all detection methods based on revelation of enzyme activity. Lateral flow immunoassays failed to detect KPC-31 (n = 4) and KPC-33 (n = 2) but correctly identified KPC-14 (n = 2). Conversely, isolates harbouring wild-type KPC genes (n = 3) were associated with high-level CZA resistance and carbapenem resistance and tested positive by all of the evaluated methods. Conclusion: In the era of CZA-based therapies, molecular blaKPC identification followed by a carbapenem hydrolysis-based phenotypic assay could be the most reasonable diagnostic algorithm to detect all KPC-producers and to identify mutants associated with impaired carbapenemase activity and CZA resistance.

Cefiderocol susceptibility testing represents a major challenge for clinical microbiology. Although disc diffusion showed robustness to test cefiderocol susceptibility, large areas of technical uncertainty (ATU) are reported by current EUCAST breakpoints. Herein, we evaluated the in vitro activity of cefiderocol on a collection of 286 difficult-to-treat Gram-negative isolates using disc diffusion and ComASP® cefiderocol microdilution panel. Broth microdilution (BMD) in iron-depleted Mueller–Hinton broth was used as reference method. Following the EUCAST guidelines, disc diffusion allowed to determine cefiderocol susceptibility (susceptible or resistant) in 78.6%, 88.1%, 85.4% and 100% of Enterobacterales, P. aeruginosa, A. baumannii and S. maltophilia isolates tested, respectively. ComASP® cefiderocol panel showed 94% and 84% of overall categorical agreement and essential agreement. Only one very major error and two major errors were observed, for MIC values nearly close to the resistance breakpoint (2 mg/L). Overall, 20.5% of the carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales that achieved ATU results by the disc diffusion method tested resistant by both ComASP® panel and reference BMD. Conversely, all VIM-producing P. aeruginosa showed MIC values in the susceptible range (≤2 mg/L). Lastly, only six out of seven (85.7%) A. baumannii isolates showing inhibition zones ® panel and the reference BMD suggesting that inhibition zone ® cefiderocol microdilution panel could be a viable solution to overcome the challenge of cefiderocol susceptibility testing in routine microbiology laboratories.

Abstract Calabrian Greeks are an enigmatic population that have preserved and evolved a unique variety of language, Greco, survived in the isolated Aspromonte mountain area of Southern Italy. To understand their genetic ancestry and explore possible effects of geographic and cultural isolation, we genome-wide genotyped a large set of South Italian samples including both communities that still speak Greco nowadays and those that lost the use of this language earlier in time. Comparisons with modern and ancient populations highlighted ancient, long-lasting genetic links with Eastern Mediterranean and Caucasian/Near-Eastern groups as ancestral sources of Southern Italians. Our results suggest that the Aspromonte communities might be interpreted as genetically drifted remnants that departed from such ancient genetic background as a consequence of long-term isolation. Specific patterns of population structuring and higher levels of genetic drift were indeed observed in these populations, reflecting geographic isolation amplified by cultural differences in the groups that still conserve the Greco language. Isolation and drift also affected the current genetic differentiation at specific gene pathways, prompting for future genome-wide association studies aimed at exploring trait-related loci that have drifted up in frequency in these isolated groups.

Abstract Background The cline of human genetic diversity observable across Europe is recapitulated at a micro-geographic scale by variation within the Italian population. Besides resulting from extensive gene flow, this might be ascribable also to local adaptations to diverse ecological contexts evolved by people who anciently spread along the Italian Peninsula. Dissecting the evolutionary history of the ancestors of present-day Italians may thus improve the understanding of demographic and biological processes that contributed to shape the gene pool of European populations. However, previous SNP array-based studies failed to investigate the full spectrum of Italian variation, generally neglecting low-frequency genetic variants and examining a limited set of small effect size alleles, which may represent important determinants of population structure and complex adaptive traits. To overcome these issues, we analyzed 38 high-coverage whole-genome sequences representative of population clusters at the opposite ends of the cline of Italian variation, along with a large panel of modern and ancient Euro-Mediterranean genomes. Results We provided evidence for the early divergence of Italian groups dating back to the Late Glacial and for Neolithic and distinct Bronze Age migrations having further differentiated their gene pools. We inferred adaptive evolution at insulin-related loci in people from Italian regions with a temperate climate, while possible adaptations to pathogens and ultraviolet radiation were observed in Mediterranean Italians. Some of these adaptive events may also have secondarily modulated population disease or longevity predisposition. Conclusions We disentangled the contribution of multiple migratory and adaptive events in shaping the heterogeneous Italian genomic background, which exemplify population dynamics and gene-environment interactions that played significant roles also in the formation of the Continental and Southern European genomic landscapes.

Introduction: Surveillance of Candida species isolates from blood cultures (BCs) in Europe is considered fragmented, unable to allow the definition of targets of antifungal stewardship recommendations especially during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Methods: We performed a multicentric retrospective study including all consecutive BC Candida isolates from six Southern European tertiary hospitals (1st January 2020 to 31st December 2021). Etiology, antifungal susceptibility patterns, and clinical setting were analyzed and compared. Results: C. albicans was the dominant species (45.1%), while C. auris was undetected. Candida species positive BC events increased significantly in COVID-19 ICUs in 2021 but decreased in other ICUs. Resistance to azole increased significantly and remained very high in C. albicans (fluconazole from 0.7% to 4.5%, p = 0.03) and C. parapsilosis complex (fluconazole up to 24.5% and voriconazole up to 8.9%), respectively. Resistance to caspofungin was remarkable in C. tropicalis (10%) and C. krusei (20%), while resistance to at least one echinocandin increased in 2021, especially in C. parapsilosis complex (from 0.8% to 5.1%, p = 0.05). Although no significant differences were observed over the study period, fluconazole and echinocandin resistance increased in COVID-19 ICUs by up to 14% and 5.8%, respectively, but remained undetected in non-intensive COVID-19 wards. Conclusions: Antifungal stewardship activities aimed at monitoring resistance to echinocandin in C. tropicalis and C. krusei, and against the spread of fluconazole resistant C. parapsilosis complex isolates are highly desirable. In COVID-19 patients, antifungal resistance was mostly present when the illness had a critical course.

Rapid detection of extended-spectrum-β-lactamase (ESBL) is of paramount importance to accelerate clinical decision-making, optimize antibiotic treatment, and implement adequate infection control measures. This study was aimed at assessing the impact of direct detection of CTX-M ESBL-producers on antimicrobial management of Escherichia coli bloodstream infections over a 2-year period. This study included all E. coli bloodstream infection (BSI) events that were serially processed through a rapid workflow with communication to the clinicians of direct detection of CTX-M ESBL-producers and conventional culture-based workflow. Antimicrobial management was retrospectively analyzed to assess the contribution of the rapid test result. A total of 199 E. coli BSI events with a report of direct detection of CTX-M ESBL production results were included. Of these, 33.7% (n = 67) and 66.3% (n = 132) were reported as positive and negative CTX-M producers, respectively. Detection of CTX-M positive results induced more antibiotic therapy modifications (mainly towards carbapenem-containing regimens, p < 0.01), and antimicrobial susceptibility testing results of CTX-M ESBL-producing E. coli isolates induced more antibiotic escalations towards carbapenem-containing regimens (p < 0.01). Direct detection of CTX-M ESBL-producing E. coli resulted in a remarkable rate of antibiotic optimizations on the same day of blood culture processing. Observing antibiotic management following the availability of antimicrobial susceptibility testing results, additional early optimizations in escalation could probably have been made if the rapid test data had been used. Detection of CTX-M negative results resulted in few therapeutic changes, which could have probably been higher, integrating epidemiological and clinical data.

We introduce a machine-learning approach to predict the complex non-Markovian dynamics of supercooled liquids from static averaged quantities. Compared to techniques based on particle propensity, our method is built upon a theoretical framework that uses as input and output system-averaged quantities, thus being easier to apply in an experimental context where particle resolved information is not available. In this work, we train a deep neural network to predict the self intermediate scattering function of binary mixtures using their static structure factor as input. While its performance is excellent for the temperature range of the training data, the model also retains some transferability in making decent predictions at temperatures lower than the ones it was trained for, or when we use it for similar systems. We also develop an evolutionary strategy that is able to construct a realistic memory function underlying the observed non-Markovian dynamics. This method lets us conclude that the memory function of supercooled liquids can be effectively parameterized as the sum of two stretched exponentials, which physically corresponds to two dominant relaxation modes.
