Contributions: This article presents the results of a study carried out as part of two large-scale pilots and analyzes the impact of the use of modern technologies in education in term of knowledge acquisition in case of students with hearing disabilities. Background: Teaching topics from STEM area is a challenging task for all teachers who have students with hearing disabilities in their class. On the one hand, because of the high degree of difficulty of the information in this field and on the other hand, because of the difficulties that students with hearing disabilities face in understanding this information. In this context, the use of modern technologies in education, but especially the way they are used together with traditional ones, can provide great support for teachers of students with special needs. Intended Outcomes: A set of modern technologies, i.e., virtual lab, virtual reality (VR), in the game-based learning context of the EU-funded NEWTON project, were employed in education as part of the Earth Course. The goal was to increase the accessibility of STEM information in the area of natural sciences for the benefit of students, especially those with hearing disabilities. Application Design: The study targeted secondary school students with hearing disabilities. Content related to natural sciences (i.e., wildlife and sealife) was presented as part of the Earth Course via innovative applications that included virtual laboratories and VR. Avatars were used to support the students with special needs (sign-language translation). Findings: The results of this study demonstrate that the use of modern technologies, combined with game-based learning in science lessons for students with hearing disabilities, contribute to increasing their knowledge level. The best results were obtained when these technologies were used in mixed lessons, alongside the traditional teaching methods.

Abstract Background Worldwide, rural populations are recognized to be exposed to increased health challenges due to their living and working environment, socioeconomic status, and access to health services. According to the Romanian Country Health Profile 2023, approximately 46% of all deaths recorded in Romania in 2019 could be attributed to behavioral risk factors such as tobacco smoking, dietary risks, alcohol consumption and low physical activity. No data on rural versus urban areas are available to date, and research is needed to document health inequalities, identify barriers to health services, and explore solutions. Methods This study is an analysis of data collected during the Health Evaluation Survey carried out by the National Institute of Public Health in 2022 and aimed to reveal differences in health risk factors between rural and urban areas. The analysis was carried out under the methodological framework of the Health Evaluation Survey 2022, which is coordinated by the National Institute of Public Health. Results Our study’s objectively measured data revealed that the overall health profile of rural communities is characterized by lower education levels, lower incomes, and higher binge drinking rates than those of their urban counterparts. Additionally, rural inhabitants more often have high blood pressure, are more overweight and obese (per body mass index measurements) and have higher fasting plasma glucose. The health profile of the urban population revealed higher education levels and greater proportions of people with adequate monthly income, people with daily alcohol consumption, people who smoke, and people with hypercholesterolemia. Access to primary health care evaluated through proxy indicators was lower in rural areas but was relatively good overall. Conclusions Our analysis of the health profile of rural communities revealed a greater prevalence of obesity and overweight, especially among women, and an increased prevalence of heavy drinking among men. Access to primary health care evaluated through proxy indicators is lower in rural areas but is relatively good overall. Lower education levels and the possibility of lower health literacy underpin the need for targeted health education campaigns. Sustainable strategies for rural health need to be identified, especially in the field of health promotion and disease prevention programs. Trial registration This study is observational research involving human participants where no interventions were applied to the study population.

This study evaluates the use of full-contour lithium disilicate retainers and layered lithium disilicate restorations for the stabilization of mandibular anterior teeth following orthodontic treatment. Lithium disilicate ceramics were selected for their superior strength, biocompatibility, and aesthetic qualities, providing a solution that minimizes discomfort and sensitivity for patients. The clinical performance of these retainers was monitored across 18 cases. Out of the 18 retainers, 10 experienced fractures. Despite the fractures, patients expressed satisfaction with the aesthetic and functional benefits of the lithium disilicate retainers, especially in comparison to traditional metal alternatives. These findings underscore the need for careful material selection and patient education, as lithium disilicate retainers offer a reliable and aesthetically appealing option for post-orthodontic stabilization, though they may require regular follow-up and monitoring due to their susceptibility to fractures.

Aim of the study Eugenol, a phenolic compound commonly found in plants like clove and bay leaves, has garnered significant attention in the field of dentistry due to its diverse pharmacological properties. In dentistry, eugenol is frequently employed in various forms, such as in polymerized cement with zinc oxide for restorative purposes. Its applications extend to endodontic cements like zinc oxide-eugenol formulations, which are commonly used in dental procedures. So far, according to our knowledge, no study in the literature has approached formulations based on iron oxide nanoparticles and eugenol, this study being the first. Materials and methods In the present study, it was developed for the first time a formulation based on iron oxide nanoparticles obtained through the combustion method, embedded on its surface with eugenol. The prepared formulation was characterized through electron microscopy investigations, followed by further in vitro evaluation as concerned with their biosafety use on a healthy murine epidermal cell line. Results The results obtained showed that the naked iron oxide nanoparticles are biocompatible and safe to use on the healthy murine epidermal cell line, while the eugenol compound exhibits a dose-dependent cytotoxicity reaching until a value of ~17% at the highest tested dose (100 μg/mL). In addition, the cytotoxicity of eugenol decreased when this was embedded on the iron oxide nanoparticles surface, recording a value of 11% at the highest concentration tested. Conclusions In conclusion, the in vitro studies on such type of formulation in dentistry and dental medicine highlight their multifaceted applications of iron oxide nanoparticles as well as eugenol, emphasizing their potential for advancing dental treatments and diagnostics.

Despite the easy accessibility of information and its widespread availability, there is a growing concern about the rise of functional illiteracy in various regions across the globe. This issue extends beyond just the realm of education and impacts the society at large, as individuals who struggle to grasp information and lack the skills to effectively choose and process it face direct consequences on their current well-being and future opportunities. To enhance reading comprehension levels among both children and adults, a multitude of research studies have been carried out. These investigations have highlighted that the implementation of metacognitive strategies, which are recognized and utilized by students and educators alike, has the potential to enhance reading comprehension abilities in individuals, whether they are dealing with their native language or a foreign one, irrespective of their age. The findings suggest that by incorporating such strategies into teaching practices and learning approaches, significant improvements can be made in the overall literacy levels of populations, thereby addressing the issue of functional illiteracy in a comprehensive manner. In this paper, we develop a comprehensive theoretical framework to analyze the factors influencing reading comprehension, as well as the relationship with metacognitive strategies.

Introduction Intracranial aneurysms in children are very rare pathologic entities. (1200 cases presented in literature from 1939-2011). Material and Methods The authors present 51 cases of children (aged: 0-16) operated between January 1999 and December 2023 - 24 years in three neurosurgical centers: “Bagdasar Arseni” Emergency University Hospital (Bucharest), Sanador Clinical Hospital (Bucharest) and Timis County Emergency Hospital (Timisoara). We collected data from many children’s intracranial aneurysms cases because “Bagdasar-Arseni” Emergency University Hospital has the most important pediatric neurosurgical unit in the country. Regarding our series, pediatric aneurysms represent 6.14% (51 cases) of all operated intracranial aneurysms (765 cases). The mean age of the patients was 14.3 years. There were 29 boys (58.7%) and 22 girls (41.2%). The clinical features are dominated by headache (48 cases - 95.7%), neck stiffness (45 cases - 91.4%), vomiting (44 cases - 89.3%), focal neurological deficit (24 cases - 44.6%), an altered level of consciousness (17 cases - 36.1%), seizures (24 cases - 44.6%, fever (20 cases - 34%). The majority of patients were Hunt & Hess Il at admittance (27 cases, 53%). All neuroimagistic investigations were done in the first 48 hours (CT, DSA, MRI). Locations: anterior communicating artery aneurysms (20 cases, 36.1%), followed by middle cerebral artery aneurysms (15 cases, 25.5%) and internal carotid artery bifurcation aneurysms (9 cases, 19.1%) and so on. Many aneurysms were large and giant (18 cases - 31.9%). Microsurgery approach was performed in 48 cases (99.7%) and 3 case (4.4%) were endovascular approached. This represents a new vision because the actual endovascular way is extremely efficient and performant in occluding pediatric intracranial aneurysms. The Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS) at six months postop. showed GR in 40 cases (78.5%), MD in 9 cases (17.2%), SD in 1 patient (2.1%) and (preoperative) death in 1 patient (2.1%). Conclusions Intracranial aneurysms in children are a very rare pathologic entity. Early microsurgical or endovascular approach is mandatory and has excellent results (good recovery).

This review aims to evaluate efficacy and drug treatment options in cases of vaginal and vulvar candidiasis associated with diabetes. We conducted an exhaustive literature review, looking at relevant clinical trials, meta-analyses, and clinical experiences. Patients with candidiasis and diabetes mellitus were included in a clinical case study to assess their response to treatment. Antifungals such as fluconazole and clotrimazole have been effective in treating candidiasis, but success has been influenced by glucose control levels. Proper diabetes management, along with antifungal therapy, resulted in decreased recurrences. Treatment of candidiasis in a diabetic context requires an integrated approach, including antifungal therapy and adequate management of diabetes. Strict blood glucose control plays a crucial role in preventing recurrences and improving the quality of life of affected patients. Further studies are needed to better understand the complex interactions between diabetes and candidiasis, paving the way for the development of more personalized and effective treatment strategies.

Abstract The postictal state, an abnormal cerebral condition following a seizure until the return to the interictal baseline, is frequently overlooked, despite often exceeding ictal duration and significantly impacting patients' lives. This study analyzes stereo‐EEG (SEEG) signal dynamics using permutation entropy to quantify recovery time (postictal alteration time – PAT) in focal epilepsy and its clinical correlations. The average PAT was 4.5 min, extending up to an hour and was highest in temporal epilepsy and hippocampal sclerosis. Correlating with age at seizure onset and at SEEG, PAT provides a solution for operationally defining the postictal state and guiding interventions.

Rectal oncological pathology usually involves surgical treatment, which presents a relatively high degree of difficulty in terms of the surgical approach. With the development of minimally invasive surgery, technology has also diversified its possibilities for performing digestive anastomoses, noting significant advances in the techniques currently available for performing mechanical anastomoses. The evolution of mechanical sutures through the use of staplers has become a true landmark of technological progress on this topic, as they have led to significant improvements in both the operative technique and the therapeutic results obtained. The aim of this paper is to highlight the advantages of using staplers in rectal surgery, which seem to contribute to a lower percentage of postoperative complications (lower incidences of suppuration, fistulae and evisceration) and a lower rate of mortality. The use of mechanical anastomoses has also increased the technical possibilities of performing lower anastomoses, thus reducing the number of colostomies and the hospitalization period, aspects that have improved the compliance of patients who require major oncological surgical interventions.

Lumbar disc hernia represents one of the most frequent neurosurgical pathologies, consisting of a posterior migration of the nucleus pulposus which protrudes through the surrounding protective connective tissue. The patient usually exhibits leg pain, paraesthesia or a variable degree of discomfort at the lower extremities, those clinical characteristics are correlated to the extent of nucleos pulposus protrusion. Regarding neuroimaging diagnosis, the gold standard of evaluation is Magnetic resonance imaging in different sequences which highlights a precise topography of the herniated disc. Currently, in a well-digitalized era, machine learning and deep learning algorithms are used to assess the sensibility of detecting a lumbar disc hernia, with promising results. In those cases requiring surgical intervention, besides the open lumbar microdiscectomy, a less invasive surgical approach regularly used in the medical practice is endoscopic lumbar discectomy, being limited to cases where a wide intraoperative perspective is not necessary. In the actual neurosurgical management, postoperative complications following lumbar disc hernia surgery are rare and accessible to manage.

Myopia is a current worldwide problem, due to a marked increase in its prevalence, all the more important in the age of monitors and working predominantly indoors. This impacts in particular on visual acuity and thus on quality of life, individual performance, with consequences for the labour market and economic implications for public health services. Consequently, much research is focused on modifying the factors that determine the onset and especially the progression of myopia, using various methods, such as the use of anticholinergic agents, the use of progressive lenses (aerial or contact), orthokeratology, refractive surgery techniques, each of which has varying degrees of effectiveness. The aim of this paper is to highlight the association between myopia progression and environmental and occupational factors, and to review currently available strategies for reducing myopia progression.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are commonly used for their analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. However, their prolonged use has been associated with adverse effects on teeth and oral tissues. Studies have shown that NSAIDs can cause oral ulceration, bleeding gums, and delayed healing of lesions in the oral cavity. NSAIDs can also affect bone metabolism, leading to osteonecrosis of the jawbone. In addition, some NSAIDs have been shown to have acidic properties that can cause erosion of tooth enamel and dentin. In dentistry, Drosera sp. has been found to exhibit several pharmacological actions such as analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. The plant contains various phytochemical components, such as flavonoids, alkaloids, and terpenoids, which are responsible for its beneficial effects. These compounds have been shown to possess antioxidant properties, which help reduce oxidative stress and inflammation. Drosera sp. has proven to be effective against tooth decay and periodontal disease. Infections in the oral cavity and caries caused by bacteria of the Streptococcus class are very sensitive to Drosera extracts. This is due to plumbagin, which inhibits the growth and development of strains of Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sobrinus, Streptococcus rattus, and Streptococcus cricetus. Studies have also been conducted on pathogens involved in periodontitis and gingivitis caused by Prevotella intermedia, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Aggregatibacter atinomycetemcomitans.

Gliomas constitute a diverse and complex array of tumors within the central nervous system (CNS), characterized by a wide range of prognostic outcomes and responses to therapeutic interventions. This literature review endeavors to conduct a thorough investigation of gliomas, with a particular emphasis on glioblastoma (GBM), beginning with their classification and epidemiological characteristics, evaluating their relative importance within the CNS tumor spectrum. We examine the immunological context of gliomas, unveiling the intricate immune environment and its ramifications for disease progression and therapeutic strategies. Moreover, we accentuate critical developments in understanding tumor behavior, focusing on recent research breakthroughs in treatment responses and the elucidation of cellular signaling pathways. Analyzing the most novel transcriptomic studies, we investigate the variations in gene expression patterns in glioma cells, assessing the prognostic and therapeutic implications of these genetic alterations. Furthermore, the role of epigenetic modifications in the pathogenesis of gliomas is underscored, suggesting that such changes are fundamental to tumor evolution and possible therapeutic advancements. In the end, this comparative oncological analysis situates GBM within the wider context of neoplasms, delineating both distinct and shared characteristics with other types of tumors.

Pelvic abscesses located in the uterovesical space usually appear postpartum after cesarean delivery. Late presentation after months or years following surgery is rarely reported, especially in immunocompetent patients. We report the case of a young patient presenting an abscess of the uterovesical pouch, infiltrated in the myometrium, posterior wall of the bladder and parametrium. The case particularities include limited identifiable predisposing risk factors, acute onset of symptoms and belated diagnosis eight years after her second cesarean. The abscess removal by laparotomy required extensive debridement, total hysterectomy, bilateral salpingectomy and partial cystectomy, with good outcome after surgical treatment. We highlight the importance of a mixt urogynecology team for individualized case management and we discuss similitudes with other late cesarean complications.

Post decompression syndrome (PDS) is a rare and life-threatening complication of pericardiocentesis, especially after rapid drainage of large amounts of pericardial fluid. We present the case of a 21-year-old man who presented with cardiac tamponade of unknown etiology. After preoperative optimization, surgical drainage of the pericardial effusion was performed and approximately 2500 mL of fluid was released over 30 min. The patient rapidly developed hemodynamic collapse with severe biventricular dysfunction, with a left ventricle ejection fraction of 15%. Vasopressor and inotropic support were initiated with Noradrenaline and Dobutamine, further escalated to Adrenaline and Levosimendan with no improvement in clinical and hemodynamic parameters. Considering the high doses of vasoactive drugs, rescue veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (V-A ECMO) was started within the first 24 h. After 10 days on V-A ECMO, the cardiac function slowly recovered, and the extracorporeal mechanical support was successfully weaned. The diagnosis of paraneoplastic PDS secondary to angiosarcoma was made and the patient was successfully discharged to the ward on the 24th day. In conclusion, far from being the last option in the management of PDS, V-A ECMO deserves early consideration for securing adequate myocardial and systemic perfusion, while the cardiac function recovers, but a risk-to-benefit assessment should be made by an experienced multidisciplinary team.

Pregnancy is a vulnerable period of time during which pregnant people are prone to infections like COVID-19, which can increase risks for both the mother and fetus. These infections may lead to complications such as preterm birth, developmental delays, and congenital abnormalities. While COVID-19 poses additional risks like placental dysfunction and neonatal infections, studies on long-term effects remain limited. Ongoing research and monitoring are essential to understand and mitigate potential cognitive and developmental challenges in children born to mothers infected with COVID-19. This review aims to guide clinicians in managing these risks throughout childhood. Maternal COVID-19 infection during pregnancy can have significant implications for fetal development, even if the newborn is not infected at birth. The release of inflammatory cytokines may cross the placental barrier, potentially disrupting fetal brain development and increasing the risk of long-term cognitive and behavioral issues, such as ADHD or autism. Placental dysfunction, caused by inflammation or thrombosis, can lead to intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), preterm birth, or hypoxia, affecting both neurological and respiratory health in newborns. Furthermore, a compromised fetal immune system can increase susceptibility to autoimmune conditions and infections. The early diagnosis and management of infections during pregnancy are crucial in mitigating risks to both the mother and fetus. Swift intervention can prevent complications like preterm birth and long-term developmental challenges, ensuring better health outcomes for both the mother and child. Long-term monitoring of children born to mothers infected with COVID-19 is necessary to understand the full extent of the virus’s impact. This review evaluates the long-term systemic effects of maternal COVID-19 infection during pregnancy on fetuses, newborns, and children, focusing beyond vertical transmission. It highlights the broader impacts on fetal development, offering insights to help clinicians manage potential issues that may arise later in life.

This study aimed to evaluate the changes in quality of life (QoL) over a 12-month period among opiate users in Romania, identifying factors that contribute to a worsening of their condition. By examining these dynamics, the research intended to inform targeted interventions and support mechanisms to mitigate the negative outcomes associated with opiate use. Conducted as a longitudinal cohort analysis, this study enrolled 74 participants diagnosed with opioid use disorders from multiple healthcare settings in Romania. The WHOQOL-BREF instrument was utilized to assess QoL, with data collection spanning from 1 January 2023 to 31 December 2023. Ethical compliance with the Declaration of Helsinki was maintained, and participants provided informed consent. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS, focusing on the impact of demographic and behavioral variables on QoL. Over the 12-month period, significant improvements were observed in all QoL domains: physical (51.68 to 58.39, p < 0.001), psychological (49.34 to 55.32, p < 0.001), social (46.21 to 53.66, p < 0.001), and environmental (47.85 to 54.17, p < 0.001). Methadone compliance significantly influenced positive outcomes across all domains. Compliant participants exhibited higher mean scores compared to non-compliant users, with respective increases in the physical domain from 52.47 to 60.21 (p < 0.001), psychological from 50.93 to 58.32 (p < 0.001), social from 48.36 to 57.14 (p < 0.001), and environmental from 47.82 to 55.79 (p < 0.001). Additionally, education showed a protective effect, particularly enhancing environmental QoL (estimate = 0.33, p = 0.013). Methadone compliance and higher education levels were identified as significant predictors of improved QoL among opiate users, demonstrating the critical importance of adherence to treatment protocols and the supportive role of education in enhancing life quality. These findings highlight the necessity for integrated treatment programs and educational interventions to improve the well-being of individuals battling opioid addiction, advocating for policy enhancements and supportive measures tailored to this demographic.

Background: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of blindness in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Cardiovascular risk factors, such as hypertension, obesity, and dyslipidemia, may play a crucial role in the development and progression of DR, though the evidence remains mixed. This study aimed to assess cardiovascular risk factors as independent predictors of DR and to develop a predictive model for DR progression in T2DM patients. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted on 377 patients with T2DM who underwent a comprehensive eye exam. Clinical data, including blood pressure, lipid profile, BMI, and smoking status, were collected. DR staging was determined through fundus photography and classified as No DR, Non-Proliferative DR (NPDR), and Mild, Moderate, Severe, or Proliferative DR (PDR). A Multivariate Logistic Regression was used to evaluate the association between cardiovascular risk factors and DR presence. Several machine learning models, including Random Forest, XGBoost, and Support Vector Machines, were applied to assess the predictive value of cardiovascular risk factors and identify key predictors. Model performance was evaluated using accuracy, precision, recall, and ROC-AUC. Results: The prevalence of DR in the cohort was 41.6%, with 34.5% having NPDR and 7.1% having PDR. A multivariate analysis identified systolic blood pressure (SBP), LDL cholesterol, and body mass index (BMI) as independent predictors of DR progression (p < 0.05). The Random Forest model showed a moderate predictive ability, with an AUC of 0.62 for distinguishing between the presence and absence of DR XGBoost showing a better performance, featuring a ROC-AUC of 0.68, while SBP, HDL cholesterol, and BMI were consistently identified as the most important predictors across models. After tuning, the XGBoost model showed a notable improvement, with an ROC-AUC of 0.72. Conclusions: Cardiovascular risk factors, particularly BP and BMI, play a significant role in the progression of DR in patients with T2DM. The predictive models, especially XGBoost, showed moderate accuracy in identifying DR stages, suggesting that integrating these risk factors into clinical practice may improve early detection and intervention strategies for DR.

Chlorhexidine (CHX) represents one of the most commonly used antiseptics in dentistry and other medical–pharmaceutical fields due to its broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. However, the potential toxic events arising from its common use in practice has become a subject of increasing concern. Thus, the present study was designed to investigate the potential toxicity of CHX digluconate at concentrations covering its antibacterial properties (0.0002–0.2%) in HGF primary gingival fibroblasts, HaCaT immortalized human keratinocytes, and JB6 Cl 41-5a epidermal cells, as well as its irritant action in ovo. Our results indicate that CHX exerted a concentration- and time-dependent cytotoxicity in all cell lines, which was evidenced by the reduction in cell viability, number, and confluence, damaged cell membrane integrity, impaired cell morphology, and specific apoptotic nuclear shape. The highest cytotoxicity was caused by CHX digluconate 0.02% and 0.2%, concentrations, at which an irritant effect on the chorioallantoic membrane was also observed. The novel findings revealed in this research contribute to the overall safety profile of CHX and stand as a basis for further investigations in this regard.

IntroductionFor martial artists, the ability to manage reactions in the face of adversity and bounce back after a stressful event can have major impact on performance. The scope of the research is to investigate martial artists’ level of resilience and aggression (Go-ahead, Foul play, and Assertiveness factors), what is specific to athletes and who have suffered from moderate and/or severe injuries (in terms of resilience and three factors of aggression examined), and test the possibility that a psychological variable under investigation can predict athletes’ injury severity.Materials and methodsA total sample of 154 athletes from striking combat sports—SC (karate, taekwondo, kickboxing, and boxing), grappling combat sports—GC (judo and BJJ), and mixed martial artists (MMA) participated in the research. For assessing resilience, the Romanian adaptation of the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS) was used, and for aggression, the Romanian adaptation of Makarowski’s Sports Aggression Questionnaire was used. An injury report form was also created and applied to athletes.ResultsThe post-hoc tests (after running a single-factor multivariate analysis of variance) revealed significant differences for resilience and Foul (violent) play between the sports disciplines analyzed. A significant positive correlation was found between athletes’ injury severity and assertiveness in SC and between injury severity and resilience in GC. Through the t-test for independent samples, it was highlighted that the average value for Foul (violent) play is significantly higher in athletes who have suffered mild, moderate, and/or severe injuries compared with martial arts athletes who have suffered from only mild/minor injuries. A binomial logistic regression was also performed to verify to what extent Foul play predicts athletes’ injury severity.ConclusionA low level of Foul (violent) play is linked with a decreased likelihood of moderate and/or severe injuries in martial arts athletes. The study findings suggest that resilience, foul play, and assertiveness have an important role in injury prevention among martial artists.

Psychiatry ,RC435-571 - Abstract
Introduction Excoriation disorder (ExD) is a pathology recognized by DSM-5, and it is considered a part of the obsessive-compulsive spectrum. ExD is associated with a high rate of psychiatric comorbidity (e.g., depression, ADHD, substance use disorders, etc.). Objectives The main objective of this review was to explore the available evidence to support the diagnosis and treatment of skin picking in elderly population. Methods A literature review of the available sources reporting on ExD in elderly patients, realized by searching three electronic databases (PubMed, Cochrane, Clarivate/Web of Science) but also the grey literature. All papers published between January 1990 and July 2023, including the terms “excoriation disorder”, “compulsive skin picking”, “dermatillomania” and “elderly” or “old-age patients” were reviewed. Results The information about ExD was extracted almost exclusively from reports on elderly patients with neurocognitive disorders. Tactile hallucinations, delusions of contamination, social isolation and focusing on own bodily sensations, and organic causes- dehydration, allergies, renal insufficiency, hepatic and pancreatic diseases, as well as toxic causes- e.g., adverse events of certain drugs should be investigated in elderly patients exhibiting signs of ExD. A differential diagnosis is very important in this population in order to find the most adequate treatment. Behavioral treatments, serotonergic antidepressants, and glutamatergic modulators have been explored in patients with ExD, although specific trials for elderly patients with this disorder are still lacking. However, case reports support the utility of several serotonergic antidepressants in the elderly. Conclusions ExD is a less explored disorder in the elderly, where an extensive differential diagnosis and screening for somatic/psychiatric comorbidities are needed. Trials exploring the potential treatments for ExD in old-age patients are also required for evidence-based case management. Disclosure of Interest None Declared

Introduction: Organ transplantation is limited by the supply of transplantable organs, and the supply of organs cannot meet the needs of patients on the waiting list. Ensuring transplantation of any procured organ is therefore mandatory. Organ injury, mostly to the organ's vasculature, can occur during multi-organ procurement, preventing subsequent transplantation. In such a context, vascular reconstructions of arterial or venous organ injuries can be useful. Report: This report describes the case of an obese 64 year old female with a history of diabetic nephropathy who underwent a cadaveric kidney transplant (right kidney with one main renal artery, one inferior polar artery, one vein, and one ureter). The ex situ preparation of the graft revealed that the main renal artery was injured and cut close to the renal hilum (0.8 cm length, 6 mm diameter), not allowing graft implantation. In order to increase the length of the main renal artery, the donor inferior vena cava was used to create a tubular conduit, allowing subsequent graft implantation. Cold and warm ischaemic times were respectively 12 hours and 36 minutes, with immediate graft function. The patient was discharged on day 8 (serum creatinine level was 95 μmol/L). Twelve month follow up was uneventful (serum creatinine level was 108 μmol/L and duplex ultrasonography showed homogeneous blood flow throughout the graft). Discussion: This case report highlights the possibility of overcoming an injured kidney graft artery by creating a tubular vena cava conduit in order to allow subsequent transplantation. Vascular reconstructions of organs injured during procurement should be considered.

Abstract Epilepsy surgery in genetic drug‐resistant epilepsy is a debated subject as more histological and molecular data are available. We retrospectively collected data from focal drug‐resistant epilepsy patients that underwent stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) invasive recordings. Patients with nonlesional brain imaging or in whom a first epilepsy surgery failed to control seizures were selected. We computed and displayed the intracranial ictal onset activity pattern on structural imaging. Patients underwent epilepsy gene panel testing, next generation sequencing—NGS. Of 113 patients, 13 underwent genetic testing, and in 6 patients, a mechanistic target of rapamycin pathway gene germline mutation (mTOR) was identified. Brain imaging was nonlesional except for one patient in whom two abnormalities suggestive of focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) were found. Patients underwent tailored brain surgery based on SEEG data, tissue analysis revealed FCD and postsurgical outcome was favorable. Our findings are similar to previous case series suggesting that epilepsy surgery can be a treatment option in patients with mTOR pathway mutation. In patients with mTOR pathway mutation, the postsurgical outcome is favorable if complete resection of the epileptogenic zone is performed. Electrophysiological seizure onset patterns in FCDs associated with mTOR pathway mutations display low‐voltage fast activity as previously described.

Aim of the study The objective of this study is represented by the identification of the clinical aspects of the oral mucosa in patients with bruxism occurring during sleep. Material and methods. The study group was represented by a number of 70 patients, women and men. The oral examinations were performed on a number of 51 patients who self-reported bruxism during sleep at the Oral Rehabilitation Clinic of the Faculty of Dentistry, “Ovidius” University in Constanța between January 2018 and January 2019. The collected data have were analyzed using the MICROSOFT-EXCEL program. Results. A number of 127 modifications in the oral mucosa were analyzed. The most frequent modifications were in the following regions: jugal mucosa (24%), inferior buccal alveolar mucosa (17%), superior buccal alveolar mucosa (10%), the dorsal surface of the tongue (10%). The presence of linea alba was observed in 51% of patients. The presence of geographic tongue (11.8%) and the presence of dental impressions (10.7%) was also observed. Conclusions. Oral mucosal modifications in patients with self-reported sleep bruxism are frequently found at the level of the jugal mucosa, inferior alveolar vestibular mucosa, superior alveolar vestibular mucosa and the dorsal surface of the tongue. Some of these modifications are manifestations in the context of bruxism, others have not been associated with bruxism until now.

Aim of the study is to analyse the mechanical problems of implant restorations: the precise passive fit, the fracture resistance-aging, the micro fractures, the change in colour and the design of both infrastructure and superstructure. Material and methods We evaluate the same full arch restoration with the five most used material combinations and a mechanical failure test and numeric design simulations of forces at bone level. Results: Generally, two extensions failed faster than the single extension. Conclusions The patients’ expectations on the success of the implant and the predictability are high compared to their reluctance towards treatment costs and duration; it is particularly important to clarify this aspect from the beginning of the treatment.

Hepatitis C is a global health problem, affecting millions of people and having significant implications for the whole organism. In this context, attention to oral health among people with hepatitis C is becoming increasingly important. Hepatitis C is a chronic viral infection of the liver, transmitted mainly by contact with infected blood, and its treatment involves the use of strong antiviral drugs. However, these treatments can have side effects and influence the oral health of patients. Adopting a regular oral hygiene regimen, including dental brushing, flossing and mouthwash, is an essential component in maintaining oral health for people with hepatitis C. Schedule regular visits to the dentist for dental exams and professional cleanings contributes to the early identification of oral problems and the prevention of complications.People undergoing treatment for hepatitis C should be aware of possible side effects, such as dry mouth, and take appropriate measures to manage these symptoms.

We demonstrate the efficiency of the conjunctival microcirculation evaluation via the processing technique, the analysis and the imagistic interpretation (using CorelDRAW and MATLAB) of the photos capturing the evolution of the conjunctival microcirculation throughout the course of the disease in children and teens with type 1 diabetes, on a prospective clinical study on a lot of 100 children with type 1 diabetes and values of glucose and glycosylated haemoglobin which illustrate a precarious metabolic control. The analysis through software techniques of the photos capturing the conjunctival circulation in a standardized area led to the elaboration of a numerical description of the pixels distribution providing values which reflect the density of the microvascularization in the corresponding sector. The average value of the black and white pixels was named index of the conjunctival circulation and was used as a tool to emphasise the emergence of the conjunctival microcirculatory modifications which were analysed in relation with the control batch and in correlation with the duration of the disease. In the case of diabetic children, the conjunctival index registered an average value of 450.55 exceeding the value of 250.17 which represents the average value of this parameter in healthy children. There are also significant differences of the conjunctival index depending on the duration of the disease; it displays a continuous increase for a duration of the disease up to 10-11 years, followed by a decrease. The technique proposed might represent a useful method in the surveillance of the conjunctival microcirculation in patients suffering from diabetes. In the study described here, it permitted the highlighting of some early manifestations, identifiable at the level of the conjunctival vessels, modifications which can be attributed to the diabetic disease.

diabetic neuropathy ,laser therapy (lllt) ,tens electrical stimulation ,Dentistry ,RK1-715 - Abstract
Diabetic neuropathy represents a frequent and debilitating complication of diabetes, affecting the peripheral nervous system and contributing to symptoms such as pain, tingling, and numbness. In this review, we explore innovative treatment techniques that have been studied to alleviate the symptoms of diabetic neuropathy. Key aspects covered include low-level laser therapy (LLLT), transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), the use of antiepileptic and antidepressant medications, stem cell therapy, and the integration of virtual reality in pain therapy.
