2. Radiation induced currents in mineral-insulated cables and in pick-up coils: model calculations and experimental verification in the BR1 reactor

Abstract

Mineral-insulated (MI) cables and Low-Temperature Co-fired Ceramic (LTCC) magnetic pick-up coils are intended to be installed in various position in ITER. The severe ITER nuclear radiation field is expected to lead to induced currents that could perturb diagnostic measurements. In order to assess this problem and to find mitigation strategies models were developed for the calculation of neutron-and gamma-induced currents in MI cables and in LTCC coils. The models are based on calculations with the MCNPX code, combined with a dedicated model for the drift of electrons stopped in the insulator. The gamma induced currents can be easily calculated with a single coupled photon-electron MCNPX calculation. The prompt neutron induced currents requires only a single coupled neutron-photon-electron MCNPX run. The various delayed neutron contributions require a careful analysis of all possibly relevant neutron-induced reaction paths and a combination of different types of MCNPX calculations. The models were applied for a specific twin-core copper MI cable, for one quad-core copper cable and for silver conductor LTCC coils (one with silver ground plates in order to reduce the currents and one without such silver ground plates). Calculations were performed for irradiation conditions (neutron and gamma spectra and fluxes) in relevant positions in ITER and in the Y3 irradiation channel of the BR1 reactor at SCK•CEN, in which an irradiation test of these four test devices was carried out afterwards. We will present the basic elements of the models and show the results of all relevant partial currents (gamma and neutron induced, prompt and various delayed currents) in BR1-Y3 conditions. Experimental data will be shown and analysed in terms of the respective contributions. The tests were performed at reactor powers of 350 kW and 1 MW, leading to thermal neutron fluxes of 1E11 n/cm2s and 3E11 n/cm2s, respectively. The corresponding total radiation induced currents are ranging from 1 to 7 nA only, putting a challenge on the acquisition system and on the data analysis. The detailed experimental results will be compared with the corresponding values predicted by the model. The overall agreement between the experimental data and the model predictions is fairly good, with very consistent data for the main delayed current components, while the lower amplitude delayed currents and some of the prompt contributions show some minor discrepancies.

Abstract

We experimentally study the effect of ionizing radiation on the properties of long-period gratings fabricated in two pure-silica-core fibers with the arc-discharge technique. It is observed that the spectra of the gratings remain almost unchanged after being subjected to doses in excess of 0.5 MGy. The results also show that the gratings' temperature and strain sensitivities are not affected by gamma radiation. OCIS codes: 050.2770, 060.2340, 060.2400, 260.5210, 350.5610.

Abstract

A high resolution neutron spectrometer (HRNS) system has been designed as a neutron diagnostic tool for ITER. The HRNS is dedicated to measurements of time resolved neutron energy spectra for both deuterium and deuterium-tritium (DT) plasmas. The main function of the HRNS is to determine the fuel ion ratio n(t)/n(d) in the plasma core with 20% uncertainty and a time resolution of 100ms for a range of ITER operating scenarios from 0.5 MW to 500 MW in fusion power. Moreover, neutron spectroscopy measurements should also be possible in the initial deuterium phase of ITER experiments. A supplementary function of the HRNS is to provide information on the fuel ion temperature. Furthermore, the HRNS can be used as an additional line-of-sight (LOS) for the radial neutron camera. To meet these requirements, a set of four spectrometers positioned after each other along a single LOS has been designed. The detector techniques employed include a thin foil proton recoil spectrometer (TPR), a neutron diamond detector (NDD), a back-scattering time-of-flight system (bToF) and a forward timeof-flight system (fToF). The TPR system, positioned closest to the plasma, provides data at high fusion powers. For plasma conditions producing intermediate fusion power two neutron spectrometers are installed: NDD and bToF. The NDD is installed as the second instrument along the HRNS LOS after the TPR. The fToF spectrometer is dedicated for low tritium densities and pure deuterium operation. The paper summarizes the current state of the art of neutron spectroscopy useful in plasma diagnostics and the possibility of installing a dedicated HRNS for ITER in the designated diagnostic port. We conclude that the proposed HRNS system can fulfil the ITER measurement requirements over a broad range of plasma operational scenarios, including full power DT, start-up, ramp-down and pure D operations.

Abstract

SummaryBackground Whether aminosalicylates or thiopurines reduce the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC) in inflammatory bowel (IBD) disease is controversial. Aim To assess simultaneously the chemopreventive effect of aminosalicylates or thiopurines in a case–control study nested in the CESAME observational cohort that enrolled consecutive patients with IBD between May 2004 and June 2005. Patients were followed up to December 2007. Methods Study population comprised 144 case patients who developed CRC from the diagnosis of IBD (65 and 79 cases diagnosed, respectively, before and from 2004, starting year of the prospective observational period of CESAME) and 286 controls matched for gender, age, IBD subtype and year of diagnosis, and cumulative extent of colitis. Exposure to aminosalicylates or thiopurines was defined by an exposure to the treatment during the year of the diagnosis of cancer. The propensity of receiving 5-ASA and thiopurines was quantified by a composite score taking into account patient and IBD characteristics. The role of aminosalicylates or thiopurines was assessed by multivariate analysis. Propensity scores and the history of primary sclerosing cholangitis were entered into the multivariate model for adjustment. Results By multivariate analysis adjusted for propensity, a significant protective effect of exposure to drugs during the year of cancer was found for aminosalicylates (OR = 0.587, 95% CI: 0.367–0.937, P = 0.0257), but not for thiopurines (OR = 0.762, 95% CI: 0.432–1.343, P = 0.3468). Conclusion In a case–control study nested in the CESAME cohort, a significant decrease in the risk of colorectal cancer in IBD was associated with exposure to aminosalicylates, not to thiopurines.
