Abstract

Conservation translocations are becoming common conservation practice, so there is an increasing need to understand the drivers of plant translocation performance through reviews of cases at global and regional levels. The establishment of the Italian Database of Plant Translocation (IDPlanT) provides the opportunity to review the techniques used in 186 plant translocation cases performed in the last 50 years in the heart of the Mediterranean Biodiversity Hotspot. We described techniques and information available in IDPlanT and used these data to identify drivers of translocation outcomes. We tested the effect of 15 variables on survival of translocated propagules as of the last monitoring date with binomial logistic mixed-effect models. Eleven variables significantly affected survival of transplants: life form, site protection, material source, number of source populations, propagation methods, propagule life stage, planting methods, habitat suitability assessment, site preparation, aftercare, and costs. The integration of vegetation studies in the selection of suitable planting sites significantly increased the success of translocation efforts. Although posttranslocation watering had a generally positive effect on translocation outcome, other aftercare techniques did not always increase transplant survival. Finally, we found that how funds were spent appeared to be more important than the actual amount spent. Plant translocations in Italy and in the Mediterranean area should account for the complexity of speciation, gene flow, and plant migrations that has led to local adaptations and has important implications for the choice and constitution of source material.

Abstract

IDPlanT is the Italian Database of Plant Translocation, an initiative of the Nature Conservation Working Group of the Italian Botanical Society. IDPlanT currently includes 185 plant translocations. The establishment of a national database on plant translocation is a key step forward in data sharing and techniques improvement in this field of plant conservation. Abstract

I castagneti da frutto di antico impianto e con alberi secolari sono un habitat raro (e fragile) nel paesaggio appenninico e di elevato pregio perché, oltre ad avere valenze storico-culturali e paesaggistiche, supportano una elevata biodiversità e costituiscono un rifugio per specie rare o in declino. La gestione degli alberi monumentali e del sottobosco ha un ruolo chiave per il mantenimento o recupero dell’habitat e la salvaguardia della biodiversità ad esso connessa. Contestualmente, va riconosciuto il contributo insostituibile dato dai castanicoltori nella tutela dell’habitat.

Abstract

I castagneti di antico impianto sono un habitat di importanza conservazionistica a livello europeo. In Appennino ci sono esempi di tali castagneti che ospitano alberi secolari. Questi ultimi, non solo testimoniano la lunga storia dell'impianto e la sua complessa relazione con l'uomo, ma possono costituire un rifugio per specie epifite rare o in declino. Nelle provincie di Bologna e Modena, attraverso informatori chiave e lo snow ball sampling sono stati individuati 20 castagneti (13 gestiti) con prevalenza di alberi secolari. Nei siti sono stati valutati la condizione degli alberi (incluso lo stato fitosanitario), la biodiversità vegetale e l’abbondanza di licheni target. I risultati evidenziano il ruolo centrale della gestione tradizionale nel preservare l'habitat e la biodiversità.

Abstract

Aims: Understanding fine-grain diversity patterns across large spatial extents is fundamental for macroecological research and biodiversity conservation. Using the GrassPlot database, we provide benchmarks of fine-grain richness values of Palaearctic open habitats for vascular plants, bryophytes, lichens and complete vegetation (i.e., the sum of the former three groups). Location: Palaearctic biogeographic realm. Methods: We used 126,524 plots of eight standard grain sizes from the GrassPlot database: 0.0001, 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 1, 10, 100 and 1,000 m2 and calculated the mean richness and standard deviations, as well as maximum, minimum, median, and first and third quartiles for each combination of grain size, taxonomic group, biome, region, vegetation type and phytosociological class. Results: Patterns of plant diversity in vegetation types and biomes differ across grain sizes and taxonomic groups. Overall, secondary (mostly semi-natural) grasslands and natural grasslands are the richest vegetation type. The open-access file ”GrassPlot Diversity Benchmarks” and the web tool “GrassPlot Diversity Explorer” are now available online (https://edgg.org/databases/GrasslandDiversityExplorer) and provide more insights into species richness patterns in the Palaearctic open habitats. Conclusions: The GrassPlot Diversity Benchmarks provide high-quality data on species richness in open habitat types across the Palaearctic. These benchmark data can be used in vegetation ecology, macroecology, biodiversity conservation and data quality checking. While the amount of data in the underlying GrassPlot database and their spatial coverage are smaller than in other extensive vegetation-plot databases, species recordings in GrassPlot are on average more complete, making it a valuable complementary data source in macroecology.

Abstract

Aims: Understanding fine-grain diversity patterns across large spatial extents is fundamental for macroecological research and biodiversity conservation. Using the GrassPlot database, we provide benchmarks of fine-grain richness values of Palaearctic open habitats for vascular plants, bryophytes, lichens and complete vegetation (i.e., the sum of the former three groups). Location: Palaearctic biogeographic realm. Methods: We used 126,524 plots of eight standard grain sizes from the GrassPlot database: 0.0001, 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 1, 10, 100 and 1,000 m² and calculated the mean richness and standard deviations, as well as maximum, minimum, median, and first and third quartiles for each combination of grain size, taxonomic group, biome, region, vegetation type and phytosociological class. Results: Patterns of plant diversity in vegetation types and biomes differ across grain sizes and taxonomic groups. Overall, secondary (mostly semi-natural) grasslands and natural grasslands are the richest vegetation type. The open-access file ”GrassPlot Diversity Benchmarks” and the web tool “GrassPlot Diversity Explorer” are now available online (https://edgg.org/databases/GrasslandDiversityExplorer) and provide more insights into species richness patterns in the Palaearctic open habitats. Conclusions: The GrassPlot Diversity Benchmarks provide high-quality data on species richness in open habitat types across the Palaearctic. These benchmark data can be used in vegetation ecology, macroecology, biodiversity conservation and data quality checking. While the amount of data in the underlying GrassPlot database and their spatial coverage are smaller than in other extensive vegetation-plot databases, species recordings in GrassPlot are on average more complete, making it a valuable complementary data source in macroecology.

7. Flora vascolare spontanea della città di Modena: analisi del centro storico

Abstract

Si presentano i risultati del primo studio sistematico sulla flora urbica di Modena. Il censimento qui illustrato è stato svolto fra il 2014 e il 2018, considerando ogni via e piazza del centro storico cittadino, quest’ultimo inteso come area delimitata dai grandi viali che ricalcano il percorso dei bastioni cinquecenteschi. Sono state rinvenute 344 specie, delle quali 1 nuova per la flora d’Italia, 10 per l’Emilia-Romagna e altre 19 per la provincia di Modena; il 63% di queste nuove segnalazioni è esotico. Le specie non più ritrovate, segnalate almeno 20 anni fa o testimoniate solo da campioni d’erbario del tardo Ottocento, sono 17. Lo spettro biologico è dominato dalle terofite (45%), seguite da emicriptofite (28%) e fanerofite (15%). Lo spettro corologico è dominato da eurasiatiche (28%), mediterranee (24%) e cosmopolite (24%). Le neofite sono il 18% del totale, valore piuttosto basso se rapportato a quanto riferito per altre città della Pianura Padana e dell’Europa centrale: ciò è probabilmente dovuto alle ridotte dimensioni del centro storico cittadino, la cui compatta struttura urbanistica d’impronta medievale pare opporre una certa resistenza all’ingresso delle specie alloctone. Le specie invasive sono l’11% del totale. Interessante la presenza di 15 specie igrofile, talora indicatrici d’irrigazione o iper-irrigazione di aiuole e tappeti erbosi. Le specie protette (solo a livello regionale) sono soltanto 4, di cui 2 presenti in quanto sfuggite a coltivazione. Considerando l’affinità delle specie censite all’ecologia urbana, la lista è dominata dalle urbano-neutrali (45%) e dalle urbanofile (42%), il che può indicare sia una discreta varietà di ambienti di crescita, parecchi dei quali in una fase di evoluzione ecologica abbastanza avanzata per la città, sia una discreta qualità ambientale verosimilmente dovuta, almeno in parte, all’abbondanza e ampiezza delle aree verdi. La ricchezza specifica in ogni via o piazza è fortemente correlata all’eterogeneità ambientale (ρ = 0,794) e moderatamente correlata alla presenza limitrofa di aree verdi (ρ = 0,544) e alla lunghezza della via o ampiezza della piazza (ρ = 0,665 e 0,673, rispettivamente); esiste inoltre una debole correlazione fra presenza di specie orticole o alimentari e presenza, nella stessa via o piazza, di locali di ristorazione (ρ = 0,212). La città si conferma dunque come un ecosistema assai dinamico e di grande ricchezza biologica, utile per capire le strategie ecologiche messe in atto dalle piante per adattarsi a condizioni anche proibitive. Le aree urbane, inoltre, spesso fungono da «snodo» per la diffusione delle specie lungo le infrastrutture viarie, durante il processo di colonizzazione del territorio. La comprensione e il rispetto dei ruoli ecologici delle specie spontanee sono concetti fondamentali per una moderna pianificazione urbanistica volta a migliorare la qualità della vita nel suo complesso.

Abstract

Il lavoro presenta una serie di tavole descrittive di alcuni reperti mummificati di Paniceae provenienti dal riparo sotto roccia di Takarkori. Il sito archeologico è ubicato nell’area più meridionale del Tadrart Acacus libico, un massiccio montuoso del Sahara Centrale, al confine tra Libia e Algeria sud-occidentale. Le schede realizzate, utili per le determinazioni nelle future analisi archeobotaniche nell’area, si riferiscono a 6 generi/specie di Paniceae, che includono tra l’altro cereali selvatici ancor oggi raccolti in aree sahariane e saheliane: Echinochloa colona, Panicum sp., Dactyloctenium aegyptium, Urochloa panicoides, Brachiaria sp., e B. leersioides.

Abstract

IDPlanT is the Italian Database of Plant Translocation, an initiative of the Nature Conservation Working Group of the Italian Botanical Society. IDPlanT currently includes 185 plant translocations. The establishment of a national database on plant translocation is a key step forward in data sharing and techniques improvement in this field of plant conservation. Abstract

© 2021 The Authors., Aims: Understanding fine-grain diversity patterns across large spatial extents is fundamental for macroecological research and biodiversity conservation. Using the GrassPlot database, we provide benchmarks of fine-grain richness values of Palaearctic open habitats for vascular plants, bryophytes, lichens and complete vegetation (i.e., the sum of the former three groups). Location: Palaearctic biogeographic realm. Methods: We used 126,524 plots of eight standard grain sizes from the GrassPlot database: 0.0001, 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 1, 10, 100 and 1,000 m and calculated the mean richness and standard deviations, as well as maximum, minimum, median, and first and third quartiles for each combination of grain size, taxonomic group, biome, region, vegetation type and phytosociological class. Results: Patterns of plant diversity in vegetation types and biomes differ across grain sizes and taxonomic groups. Overall, secondary (mostly semi-natural) grasslands and natural grasslands are the richest vegetation type. The open-access file ”GrassPlot Diversity Benchmarks” and the web tool “GrassPlot Diversity Explorer” are now available online (https://edgg.org/databases/GrasslandDiversityExplorer) and provide more insights into species richness patterns in the Palaearctic open habitats. Conclusions: The GrassPlot Diversity Benchmarks provide high-quality data on species richness in open habitat types across the Palaearctic. These benchmark data can be used in vegetation ecology, macroecology, biodiversity conservation and data quality checking. Abstract

Puccinellia fasciculata is a littoral miohalophyte with a Mediterranean-Atlantic distribution, uncommonly found in inland sites. The main Italian inland population is located in the Salse di Nirano Reserve, an area internationally renowned for the phenomenon of mud volcanoes. In this study, molecular markers are used to characterize this population and its possible relationships with the nearest littoral conspecific population. A survey of ISSR markers revealed low levels of genetic diversity (He = 0.081 in the inland population, 0.105 in the littoral one) and a weak genetic differentiation (Gst = 0.24 within the inland population, 0.28 among this and the littoral one). A sequence analysis of three non-coding regions of chloroplast DNA found no genetic differentiation both within the inland population and between the two populations, and revealed a common origin for the two dating back to the middle Holocene. The apparent incongruence between the results from the two approaches may be explained by differences between ISSR and non-coding cpDNA markers in capturing signatures related to gene flow; their integrated information implies a mixed reproductive strategy and a common evolutionary history for the two examined populations. Effective conservation strategies are recommended for the inland population of P. fasciculata and its habitat.

Abstract

La Commissione Europea (CE) ha inserito ad oggi 36 taxa esotici vegetali nella lista delle specie esotiche invasive di rilevanza unionale ai sensi del Regolamento (UE) n. 1143/2014 del Parlamento Europeo e del Consiglio, recante disposizioni volte a prevenire e gestire l’introduzione e la diffusione delle specie esotiche invasive. La lista delle specie di rilevanza unionale viene periodicamente aggiornata e include quelle specie che rappresentano una grave minaccia per la biodiversità, ma anche per la salute dei cittadini e le attività economiche nei territori dell’Unione Europea e che necessitano di una gestione concertata a livello comunitario. La CE vigila sullo stato di ogni taxon grazie anche a periodiche rendicontazioni da parte dei paesi dell'Unione. In vista di tali report, tra il 2020 e il 2021 è stata definita e integrata la distribuzione di queste specie in Italia.

Abstract

Aim: Ecoinformatics offer new opportunity to test islands as biogeographic and eco- logical models. In this paper we predicted three hypotheses: (1) plot-based data issu- ing from vegetation surveys can be used to predict Island Species-Area Relationships (ISARs) or island similarity; (2) the habitat area is an independent predictor of species richness patterns within island; (3) species richness and composition are more de- pendent on habitat type than island identity in land-bridge islands. Area: Tuscan Archipelago, Italy. Methods: We assembled a database of all the vegetation plots available for the archi- pelago. For the first hypothesis we calculated ISARs, using Arrhenius model, and Beta Diversity, using Jaccard dissimilarity, on both published floras and cumulative plot data. For the second hypothesis, we modelled Habitat Species-Area Relationships (HSARs), using Arrhenius model. For the third hypothesis, we used additive partition- ing of species richness, NMDS and PERMANOVA. Results: Island Species-Area Relationships based on plot data mirrored those on pub- lished floras, but absolute values of c and z parameters were different. Beta diversity based on plot data resembled those of published floras, but was higher. Species rich- ness was significantly related to the habitat area. The total species richness of the archipelago was linked to large scale drivers, such as island identity, while plot species composition was driven by both habitat type and island identity. Conclusions: Data assembled issuing from vegetation surveys are useful to describe biogeographic patterns. Species richness in the archipelago is driven by spatial fac- tors such as the amount of habitats and the differences among islands, while the spe- cies composition of local assemblages is largely driven by habitat filters rather than by island identity, as expected in land-bridge islands.

Abstract

In this contribution, new data concerning the Italian distribution of alien vascular flora are presented. It includes new records, exclusions and confirmations for Italy or for Italian administrative regions for taxa in the genera Ageratum, Aster, Buddleja, Cedrus, Centranthus, Cephalotaxus, Clerodendrum, Cotoneaster, Cyperus, Honorius, Lantana, Ligustrum, Morus, Muscari, Oenothera, Opuntia, Platycladus, Plumbago, Pseudotsuga, Sedum, Sporobolus, Stachys, Ulmus and Yucca. A nomen novum, Stachys talbotii, is proposed as a replacement name for Sideritis purpurea.

Abstract

Viola pumila Chaix è una specie eurasiatica tipica delle praterie alluvionali continentali. Il suo legame con habitat di prati umidi pone problemi di conservazione. Le uniche popolazioni italiane, localizzate nella bassa Pianura Padana (province di Modena e Reggio Emilia), sono al limite sud-occidentale dell’areale e sono completamente isolate dalle altre popolazioni europee. In Italia, secondo i parametri IUCN (2001), Viola pumila è specie gravemente minacciata. Nel 2003, l’Orto Botanico di Modena ha avviato un progetto basato su una strategia integrata di conservazione in situ/ex situ. Si è iniziato con la tutela e il rafforzamento delle popolazioni del Reggiano: raccolta di semi, prove di germinazione e vitalità, sviluppo in vitro di nuove piante e loro reintroduzione in due aree vicine alle stazioni naturali, nel territorio del comune di Reggiolo. L’intero progetto prevede 1) la caratterizzazione vegetazionale ed ecologica degli habitat 2) il monitoraggio delle popolazioni, 3) la descrizione della variabilità genetica infra- e intrapopolazioni per acquisire dati sugli effetti delle dimensioni delle popolazioni e sulle loro prevalenti strategie riproduttive. Il coordinamento con ricerche dedicate alla gestione degli habitat di Viola pumila nella Germania centrale, condotte dal Department of Landscape Ecology and Territory Management, Justus Liebig University (Giessen), consentirà di ottenere informazioni importanti per la conservazione in situ delle stazioni padane di V. pumila.

Abstract

La Riserva Naturale delle Valli del Mincio, istituita dalla Regione Lombardia nel 1984, è caratterizzata da un denso sistema di canali alimentati dal fiume Mincio, che convergono in specchi d’acqua comunemente detti “giochi”, circondati da canneti e cariceti. Per contribuire alla conservazione di specie vegetali rare presenti nella Riserva, è stata osservata la distribuzione locale della rizofita annuale Trapa natans L. (Trapaceae), studiandone il dinamismo spazio-temporale nell’arco di 6 anni. La specie, paleotemperata-subtropicale, è tipica d’acque stagnanti con fondo fangoso, generalmente profonde 1-2 m, eutrofiche e con contenuto di carbonati variabile. La sua presenza in Italia è oggi assai rara, limitata alle regioni settentrionali (Piemonte, Lombardia, Emilia, Veneto e Friuli); nelle regioni peninsulari, per le quali esistono segnalazioni più o meno recenti (Toscana, Umbria, Lazio e Puglia), è presumibilmente scomparsa (1). Inclusa nelle Liste Rosse a livello nazionale e regionale (2, 3), T. natans è stata inserita nel recente elenco delle “specie protette a raccolta regolamentata” di cui alla L. R. 10/2008 della Regione Lombardia. La specie forma un’associazione diffusa nell’Europa Centrale e Meridionale (Trapetum natantis Kárpáti 1963) in cui presenta un grado di copertura dal 40 al 100 %, con forte tendenza a creare popolamenti monofitici. Nel corso di queste indagini sono state osservate, dal 2003 al 2008, 6 stazioni individuate nella Riserva; per 4 di esse è stato possibile effettuare un confronto con dati aggiornati al 2002 (4). In generale, due stazioni hanno manifestato forti contrazioni (riduzione della superficie occupata pari o superiore al 70% nel tempo di tre generazioni), due sono rimaste invariate, due si sono formate recentemente (2007) e poi espanse. La minaccia più evidente è costituita dall’invasione di specie alloctone, come Myocastor coypus Molina, che si ciba dei germogli di T. natans, e Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn., introdotta nella riserva nel 1921. Tutte le stazioni di T. natans sono pertanto riconducibili a un’unica location (Minaccia 8.1, IUCN vers. 3.0). Per converso, fuori della Riserva, era presente al momento dell’ultimo rilievo un’estesissima stazione (circa 10 ha), nel Lago di Mezzo, probabilmente originata dall’apporto di frutti dai bacini a monte. N. nucifera continuava invece ad espandersi, per via vegetativa, unicamente nella Riserva e nel Lago Superiore. Secondo i criteri IUCN 2001 applicati (A e C), includendo anche la stazione di T. natans fuori dalla Riserva la categoria di rischio passa da EN a VU. La valutazione dello stato di conservazione è stata condotta a livello locale, coi conseguenti limiti applicativi nella definizione di assessment e status secondo il protocollo IUCN (5). Questo tipo di analisi ha tuttavia aiutato a valutare l’efficienza della Riserva nella conservazione della specie e i dati raccolti potranno costituire un contributo per indagini su scala più ampia (6). 1) A. Abstract

This study investigates botanical remains from the Takarkori site in the Tadrart Acacus region (SW Libya) to reconstruct socio-economic and cultural characteristics of human groups during the Holocene. By analyzing micro- and macrofossils of plant origin, we aim to understand the availability and management of environmental resources and how plant taxa were used by humans. The exceptional preservation of archaeobotanical material across all occupation levels, facilitated by the region's geomorphological and environmental conditions, provides a unique opportunity to study pre-Pastoral and Pastoral Neolithic activities within a comprehensive diachronic framework. Our research extends previous investigations by examining the spatial distribution of archaeobotanical remains in association with site furniture and material correlates, offering insights into the functional use of space within the site. Also, the features of plant assemblages and their distribution patterns indicate the planning in the use of plant resources and the diverse uses beyond subsistence, including ritual and cultural practices. Abstract

Conservation translocations are becoming common conservation practice, so there is an increasing need to understand the drivers of plant translocation performance through reviews of cases at global and regional levels. The establishment of the Italian Database of Plant Translocation (IDPlanT) provides the opportunity to review the techniques used in 186 plant translocation cases performed in the last 50 years in the heart of the Mediterranean Biodiversity Hotspot. We described techniques and information available in IDPlanT and used these data to identify drivers of translocation outcomes. We tested the effect of 15 variables on survival of translocated propagules as of the last monitoring date with binomial logistic mixed-effect models. Eleven variables significantly affected survival of transplants: life form, site protection, material source, number of source populations, propagation methods, propagule life stage, planting methods, habitat suitability assessment, site preparation, aftercare, and costs. The integration of vegetation studies in the selection of suitable planting sites significantly increased the success of translocation efforts. Although posttranslocation watering had a generally positive effect on translocation outcome, other aftercare techniques did not always increase transplant survival. Finally, we found that how funds were spent appeared to be more important than the actual amount spent. Plant translocations in Italy and in the Mediterranean area should account for the complexity of speciation, gene flow, and plant migrations that has led to local adaptations and has important implications for the choice and constitution of source material., (© 2024 Society for Conservation Biology.)

30. Botanical memory: five centuries of floristic changes revealed by a Renaissance herbarium (Ulisse Aldrovandi, 1551-1586).

Abstract

We analysed the spatially explicit floristic information available in the herbarium of Ulisse Aldrovandi (1551-1586) to track floristic changes in the surroundings of Bologna across five centuries. Aldrovandi's data were compared with the Flora della Provincia di Bologna by Girolamo Cocconi (1883) and the Floristic Database of Emilia-Romagna (1965-2021). We explored potential variations in native range and life forms composition, and habitat affinity of the species in the three floras, also contrasting between native and alien species. Native species, mainly in terms of variations of hydro-hygrophytes, chamaephytes and therophytes, provide clear signals of human disturbance and habitat loss. Signals of climate change are provided by the high-mountain species, that were comparably rare between Aldrovandi and current flora and more represented in Cocconi, probably reflecting the effect of the Little Ice Age. Our findings also indicate the increasing importance of alien species from the Renaissance onwards. In this perspective, Aldrovandi's herbarium preserves the memory of the first signs of a radical transformation of the European flora and habitats. Finally, the study warns about the risk of dismissing herbaria and herbarium specimens collection, which would cause irreparable lacunas in our botanical memory, hindering our ability to predict biodiversity trajectories., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing interests., (© 2023 The Authors.)

31. Brassica and Sinapis Seeds in Medieval Archaeological Sites: An Example of Multiproxy Analysis for Their Identification and Ethnobotanical Interpretation.

Abstract

The genus Brassica includes some of the most important vegetable and oil crops worldwide. Many Brassica seeds (which can show diagnostic characters useful for species identification) were recovered from two archaeological sites in northern Italy, dated from between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. We tested the combined use of archaeobotanical keys, ancient DNA barcoding, and references to ancient herbarium specimens to address the issue of diagnostic uncertainty. An unequivocal conventional diagnosis was possible for much of the material recovered, with the samples dominated by five Brassica species and Sinapis . The analysis using ancient DNA was restricted to the seeds with a Brassica -type structure and deployed a variant of multiplexed tandem PCR. The quality of diagnosis strongly depended on the molecular locus used. Nevertheless, many seeds were diagnosed down to species level, in concordance with their morphological identification, using one primer set from the core barcode site ( matK ). The number of specimens found in the Renaissance herbaria was not high; Brassica nigra , which is of great ethnobotanical importance, was the most common taxon. Thus, the combined use of independent means of species identification is particularly important when studying the early use of closely related crops, such as Brassicaceae.
