Abstract

An analytical study of the disease COVID-19 in Colombia was carried out using mathematical models such as Susceptible-Exposed-Infectious-Removed (SEIR), Logistic Regression (LR), and a machine learning method called Polynomial Regression Method. Previous analysis has been performed on the daily number of cases, deaths, infected people, and people who were exposed to the virus, all of them in a timeline of 550 days. Moreover, it has made the fitting of infection spread detailing the most efficient and optimal methods with lower propagation error and the presence of statistical biases. Finally, four different prevention scenarios were proposed to evaluate the ratio of each one of the parameters related to the disease., Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures

2105 Torregroza Se analizan prospectivamente los factores asociados con morbilidad y mortalidad operatoria en el servicio de cirugía torácica del Hospital Santa Clara de Bogotá D. C, en el período comprendido entre enero y junio de 1994. Un total de 76 pacientes fueron intervenidos y les fueron realizados 80 procedimientos quirúrgicos. La tasa de morbilidad perioperatoria fue del 37.5%. Fueron tratadas 46 complicaciones en total, ocurridas en 30 pacientes complicados. Abstract

Se analiza la experiencia de las lesiones penetrantes de la tráquea en los pacientes que ingresaron al servicio de urgencias quirúrgicas del Hospital San Juan de Dios de Bogotá entre 1980 y 1985, la cual recoge 48 casos, de los cuales 47 eran de sexo masculino, con mayor incidencia entre 21 y 30 años de edad. Las lesiones fueron producidas en el 73% de los casos por arma cortopunzante (ACP), y en el 27% por proyectil de arma de fuego (PAF); 45 de ellas se hallaban localizadas en nivel cervical, y las tres restantes, en nivel torácico. El enfisema subcutáneo, la fuga aérea y la hemoptisis fueron los signos y síntomas sobresalientes. La vía de acceso quirúrgico más utilizada fue la cervicotomía oblicua derecha en 18 casos, y en 13, la vía izquierda. La sutura primaria de la herida traqueal se realizó en 29 pacientes, empleándose material absorbible en el 35%. La traqueostomía como medida para el manejo primario se realizó en 8 casos, a través de la herida traumática en 4 y como tratamiento adyuvante en 10 pacientes con lesión de la tráquea cervical. Se dejó drenaje tipo Penrose en todas las cervicotomías y se administró antibióticos sistémicos a todos los pacientes. La estancia hospitalaria promedio fue de 8 días para lesiones exclusivamen te traqueales. Las complicaciones más frecuentes fueron, el absceso de la herida quirúrgica en 5 casos, y la fístula traqueocutánea por dehiscencia de la sutura, en tres. La mortalidad global fue del 4%, como consecuencia de lesiones asociadas ocasionadas por PAF.

7. Stark effect in GaN/AlN nanowire heterostructures: Influence of strain relaxation and surface states

Abstract

We model the quantum confined Stark effect in AlN/GaN/AlN heterostructures grown on top of [0001]-oriented GaN nanowires. The pyro- and piezoelectric field are computed in a self-consistent approach, making no assumption about the pinning of the Fermi level, but including an explicit distribution of surface states which can act as a source or trap of carriers. We show that the pyro- and piezoelectric field bends the conduction and valence bands of GaN and AlN and transfers charges from the top surface of the nanowire to an electron gas below the heterostructure. As a consequence, the Fermi level is likely pinned near the valence band of AlN at the top surface. The electron gas and surface charges screen the electric field, thereby reducing the Stark effect. The efficient strain relaxation further weakens the piezoelectric polarization. We compute the electronic properties of the heterostructures with a sp3d5s* tight-binding model, and compare the theoretical predictions with the available experimental data.

Abstract

Coherent diffraction imaging (CDI) on Bragg reflections is a promising technique for the study of three-dimensional (3D) composition and strain fields in nanostructures, which can be recovered directly from the coherent diffraction data recorded on single objects. In this article we report results obtained for single homogeneous and heterogeneous nanowires with a diameter smaller than 100 nm, for which we used CDI to retrieve information about deformation and faults existing in these wires. Due to the low content of MSCs in the bone marrow, ex vivo expansion procedures are utilized to increase the cell number. Customarily, before administration of the resulting expanded cell product MSCs to the patient, its cellular identity is usually evaluated according to a set of “minimal phenotypic” markers, which are not modified by ex vivo processing. However, MSC functional (“reparative”) markers, which are severely impaired along the ex vivo expansion routine, are usually not assessed.Patients and methods: In this proof-of-concept study, a cohort of five avascular osteonecrosis patients received an instillation of ex vivo-expanded autologous MSCs, manufactured under controlled conditions, with an aim to protect their functional (“reparative”) capacity.Results and conclusion: Outcomes of this study confirmed the safety and effectiveness of the MSC-based therapy used. After a follow-up period (19–54 months), in all patients, the hip function was significantly improved and pain intensity markedly reduced. As a corollary, no patient required hip arthroplasty. Abstract

La migración venezolana ha tenido efectos tanto entre las familias que han experimentado la migración de uno de sus miembros, como en las ciudades hacia donde se dirigen estas personas. Así, el objetivo de este artículo es analizar las transformaciones territoriales experimentadas por migrantes venezolanos durante su periodo de residencia en la ciudad de Medellín, Colombia. La investigación fue de corte cualitativo y utiliza un método hermenéutico para el análisis de entrevistas a venezolanos radicados en Medellín. Se encontró como resultados que los venezolanos han experimentado una transformación territorial manifestada en su espacialidad, su temporalidad y sus relaciones sociales. Se concluye que, si bien no es una obligación para un Estado velar por los derechos humanos de ciudadanos extranjeros, en realidad sí lo es ante la comunidad internacional y nacional; esta protección de los migrantes se convierte en una obligación ética y moral por el respeto y cuidado de las vidas humanas que están allí en juego y más cuando los motivos de migración son las expulsiones que ha generado el sistema socioeconómico interno y externo de un territorio.

13. Delineation of water flow paths in a tropical intermittent stream system under changing land use: Isotopic and geochemical assessment

Abstract

Intermittent streams strongly depend on hydro-climatological conditions. Interest in the ecology and hydrology of these streams has recently increased worldwide because they influence biological processes, determine water availability to humans, and are highly vulnerable to impacts of global drivers of change. However, most research on hydrological intermittence has been carried out on temperate environments, while knowledge of intermittent streams in tropical settings remains limited. To fill this knowledge gap, the Cube River Ecohydrological Observatory situated in Choco bioregion was established in late 2020 in the Pacific lowlands of Northwestern Ecuador. The CREO exhibits a variety of land uses ranging from tropical rain forest to highly deforested areas used for intensive agriculture and cattle grazing. Using a combined dataset of hydrological and tracer (isotopic and geochemical) observations monitored at 20 stream reaches including intermittent and perennial sites during wet, transitional, and dry flow conditions during 2021, in combination with thematic maps of land biophysical features, a perceptual model of the dominant flow paths influencing runoff generation in a tropical setting is presented. Results indicate that bedrock permeability is the key factor causing intermittent streams to cease flowing during dry periods. We also observed spatial and temporal variability on the concentration of biogenic elements associated to differences in land cover (forest versus pasture and cultivation areas) and stream water use for recreation. These findings contribute to improve the process-based knowledge of the hydrology of intermittent stream systems and also highlight the influence of anthropic activities on stream water quality., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

Abstract

Acute appendicitis remains a common reason for hospital admission. Reports have suggested a reduction in patients attending emergency departments during the acute phase of the SARSCoV- 2 pandemic. Moreover, a global surge in conservative management of acute appendicitis has recently been registered by the Appy Study of the Association of Italian Surgeons in Europe (ACIE)1. This is a treatment option that has been known for some years, although quite seldom used before the pandemic2–4. As most countries are experiencing new waves of the pandemic, the attitude of surgeons towards SARS-CoV-2 screening policies and personal protective equipment (PPE) used during the management of patients with acute appendicitis need to be established. According to a subanalysis of the ACIE Appy Study, half of surgeons globally were testing patients for SARS-CoV-2 only when symptomatic or there was suspicion of infection; approximately 12 per cent did not test patients at all (Fig. 1 and Table S1). There were regional differences. In Europe, respondents tested all patients (50.8 per cent) or those with suspected infection (43.9 per cent), with only 5.3 per cent not being tested at all. In the USA, the majority of participants only tested patients with a suspected infection (65.6 per cent). A similar picture of testing only those with a suspected infection was also reported from Latin America (57.2 per cent), Asia/Middle East (76.8 per cent), and Africa (41.7 per cent). Even more worrisome, 58.3 per cent of respondents from Africa and 27.6 per cent from Latin America were not testing patients at all before appendicectomy. Concerning the screening modality, most respondents used PCR alone or in combination with chest imaging. Serology was rarely used overall and never in Africa (Fig. 1 and Table S2 ). It is now accepted that chest imaging is not routinely required and that PCR is an accurate screening modality. Serology might, however, be useful to shed light on the disease course and previous exposure to the virus, but respondents from some countries still have restricted access to this test. In terms of PPE during appendicectomy, most African respondents did not use different PPE compared with the prepandemic period in patients who tested negative for COVID-19. More concerning is that 58.3 per cent did not use different PPE in untested patients. This differed from other regions where the rate of those not considering a change of PPE in untested patients did not exceed 22 per cent. One in 10 respondents from Latin America also reported that they were not using different PPE compared with the prepandemic phase in patients who tested positive for COVID-19. These data, and taking into account the high prevalence of acute appendicitis, leads to the conclusion that omission of routine patient screening may have contributed to local clusters among patients and threatened the safety of healthcare workers5. In this respect, it is likely that limited access to PPE explains the attitude of surgeons towards patients with unknown SARSCoV- 2 status or those infected, raising ethical concerns about the safety of surgical staff. It is of outmost importance that, even during challenging times and stress on economic stability, industrialized countries make efforts to sustain low-income countries and those with limited resources. This would ensure equal working conditions, safer treatment for patients with acute appendicitis, and better control of the pandemic

Abstract

Background: Surgical strategies are being adapted to face the COVID-19 pandemic. Recommendations on the management of acute appendicitis have been based on expert opinion, but very little evidence is available. This study addressed that dearth with a snapshot of worldwide approaches to appendicitis. Methods: The Association of Italian Surgeons in Europe designed an online survey to assess the current attitude of surgeons globally regarding the management of patients with acute appendicitis during the pandemic. Questions were divided into baseline information, hospital organization and screening, personal protective equipment, management and surgical approach, and patient presentation before versus during the pandemic. Results: Of 744 answers, 709 (from 66 countries) were complete and were included in the analysis. Most hospitals were treating both patients with and those without COVID. There was variation in screening indications and modality used, with chest X-ray plus molecular testing (PCR) being the commonest (19·8 per cent). Conservative management of complicated and uncomplicated appendicitis was used by 6·6 and 2·4 per cent respectively before, but 23·7 and 5·3 per cent, during the pandemic (both P < 0·001). One-third changed their approach from laparoscopic to open surgery owing to the popular (but evidence-lacking) advice from expert groups during the initial phase of the pandemic. No agreement on how to filter surgical smoke plume during laparoscopy was identified. There was an overall reduction in the number of patients admitted with appendicitis and one-third felt that patients who did present had more severe appendicitis than they usually observe. Conclusion: Conservative management of mild appendicitis has been possible during the pandemic. The fact that some surgeons switched to open appendicectomy may reflect the poor guidelines that emanated in the early phase of SARS-CoV-2.

Abstract

Mgo single crystals were used for the melt processing of YBa2Cu3O7-Y2BaCuO5 bulk cylinder composites up to 35 mm in diameter. An analysis was conducted on the effects of processing parameters to optimize growth conditions. The orientation, size and morphology of the grains were characterized through scanning electron microscopy, EDX and polarized light microscopy. Finite element calculations were then employed for the systematic measurement of trapped magnetic and levitation force.

Abstract

Studies have been carried out of the sulphur geochemistry and microbial community structure of seven circumneutral wastewaters from two nickel mines in Ontario and Newfoundland (Canada) collected in summer, winter, and spring during 2014-2015. The sulphur oxidising enrichments were also characterised in two pH corrals of 7-5 and 5-3. Mine 1 had lower contents of total soluble sulphur compounds and reactive soluble sulphur compounds than Mine 2. Mine 1 also exhibited greater wastewater microbial community diversity with more unique sequences, resulting in clear non-metric multidimensional scaling differentiation and Bray-Curtis dissimilarity between the microbial communities at the two mines. Proteobacteria dominated all wastewater samples and enrichment communities, ranging between 58-99% of the total of sequences retrieved. However, a shift in dominance occurred from primarily Alphaproteobacteria (28-77%) in the circumneutral wastewater communities to Gammaproteobacteria (over 80%) in the moderately acidic enrichment communities. A further pH-dependent shift occurred from Halothiobacillus spp. dominating the pH 7-5 enrichments to Thiomonas spp. dominating the pH 5-3 enrichments. RESUMEN Chlamydia psittaci (Cp) es una bacteria intracelular obligada transmitida a través de aerosoles derivados de secreciones nasales y ópticas, tejidos, heces y plumas. Comúnmente es identificada en aves, sin embargo, han emergido genotipos capaces de infectar nuevos reservorios mamíferos. Por ello, se buscó ADN de Cp en muestras de cinco individuos de Mustella putorios furo y un hisopado cloacal de un individuo de Colinus cristatus en cautiverio en Venezuela a través de la PCR-anidada, amplificando un segmento del gen 16S ADNr. Se demostró la presencia de Cp en un Colinus cristatus con signos de clamidiosis y en cuatro Mustella putorios furo sin signos clínicos de clamidiosis. Se indica un posible nuevo reservorio para Cp, donde el contacto con productos de excreción de Colinus cristatus con manifestaciones clínicas de clamidiosis, hacinamiento, inadecuada ventilación, contacto con productos de excreción de Psittaciformes y condiciones sanitarias deficientes favoreció la infección por Cp. Se desconoce el total de reservorios de Cp, por ello la notificación de los aislados permite el entendimiento, distribución y diversidad de agentes clamidiales en fauna silvestre y en cautiverio. The presence of Cp was found in four asymptomatic Mustela putorios furo and one symptomatic Colinus cristatus for avian chlamydiosis, indicating a new potential reservoir for Cp. The contact with excretions of infected Colinus cristatus and Psittaciformes, as well as overcrowding, inadequate ventilation, and inadequate sanitary conditions can favor Cp infection. The total number of Cp reservoirs is unknown; therefore, the noting and molecular characterization of isolates enable the understanding, distribution, and diversity of chlamydial agents in wildlife and animals in captivity.

Abstract

The usability of virtual reality (VR) controller interfaces are often complex and difficult for first time users. Most controllers provide minimal feedback which relegates the potential for heightened interaction and feedback within virtual experiences. This research explores how haptic technology systems partnered with VR can deliver immersive interactions between user and virtual environment (VE). This research involves the development of a haptic glove interface prototype that incorporates a force feedback and vibrotactile feedback system. It focuses on determining a workflow that communicates in real-time user interaction and environmental feedback using Unreal Engine and the produced haptic glove system. Testing and calibrating the prototype feedback system provided a baseline for developers to rationalise and improve accuracy of current real-time virtual feedback systems. The evaluation of this research in industry unfolds new technical knowledge for implementing a wider range of haptic technologies within VR. This further development would involve reviewing the usability and interaction standards for VR users in the design process.

Abstract

Tropical countries produce a great variety of lignocellulosic residues from small-area planted crops. Large amount of "Tetra Pak" package are also produced without any disposal treatment. In order to give solutions for waste management, residues must be incorporated in other processes, such as the manufacture of particleboards. The main objective of this work was to evaluate chemical compositions, extractives in different solvent, chemical characterization of extracts in polar and un-polar solvent utilizing infrared spectrum analysis. A second aim of this study was to test the compatibility between chemical composition and extractives of empty bunch fruit of Elaeis guineensis (BPF), the leaves of Ananas cumosos (PL) and "Tetra Pak" packages with three timber species (Gmelina arborea, Tectona grandis and Cupressus lusitanica).. Results showed that cellulose, ashes and lignin content of BPF, PL and "Tetra Pak" differ from those of the woody species. Similar result was obtained for pH and for the amount of substances extracted with different solvents. Infrared speetrum of water (polar), and ethanol-toluene (un-polar) solutions showed that the greatest differences in extracts were found in BPF and PL, this in relation to the studied woody species. Finally, HCMA showed that residues from BPF and "Tetra Pak" packages are slightly different, considering chemical compositions and extract content, to other woody species used for particleboard manufacture. Moreover, PL has the least compatibility with the woody species. Los países tropicales producen una gran variedad de residuos lignocelulósicos a partir de cultivos sembrados en áreas pequeñas. También se produce una gran cantidad de envases "Tetra Pak" sin ningún tratamiento de eliminación. Para dar soluciones a la gestión de residuos es necesario incorporar los residuos en otros procesos, como la fabricación de tableros de partículas. El principal objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar composiciones químicas, extractivos en diferentes solventes, caracterización química de extractos en solventes polares y no polares utilizando análisis de espectro infrarrojo. Un segundo objetivo de este estudio fue probar la compatibilidad entre la composición química y los extractivos del fruto de racimo vacío de Elaeis guineensis (BPF), las hojas de Ananas cumosos (PL) y los envases "Tetra Pak" con tres especies maderables (Gmelina arborea, Tectona grandis y Cupressus lusitanica). Los resultados mostraron que el contenido de celulosa, cenizas y lignina de BPF, PL y "Tetra Pak" difieren de los de las especies leñosas. Se obtuvo un resultado similar para el pH y para la cantidad de sustancias extraídas con diferentes solventes. El espectro infrarrojo de las soluciones de agua (polar) y etanol-tolueno (no polar) mostró que las mayores diferencias en los extractos se encontraron en BPF y PL, esto en relación con las especies leñosas estudiadas. Finalmente, HCMA mostró que los residuos de los envases BPF y "Tetra Pak" son ligeramente diferentes, considerando las composiciones químicas y el contenido de extracto, a otras especies leñosas utilizadas para la fabricación de tableros de partículas. Abstract

Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSP) belong to a kind of traditional NP-hard problems with a high impact on both research and industrial domains. The goal of these problems is to find a feasible assignment for a group of variables where a set of imposed restrictions is satisfied. This family of NP-hard problems demands a huge amount of computational resources even for their simplest cases. For this reason, different heuristic methods have been studied so far in order to discover feasible solutions at an affordable complexity level. This paper elaborates on the application of Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithms with a novel CSP-graph based model to solve Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problems (RCPSP). The main drawback of this ACO-based model is related to the high number of pheromones created in the system. To overcome this issue we propose two adaptive Oblivion Rate heuristics to control the number of pheromones: the first one, called Dynamic Oblivion Rate, takes into account the overall number of pheromones produced in the system, whereas the second one inspires from the recently contributed Coral Reef Optimization (CRO) solver. A thorough experimental analysis has been carried out using the public PSPLIB library, and the obtained results have been compared to those of the most relevant contributions from the related literature. The performed experiments reveal that the Oblivion Rate heuristic removes at least 79% of the pheromones in the system, whereas the ACO algorithm renders statistically better results than other algorithmic counterparts from the literature.

Abstract

In this paper we propose a technique to automate the process of building translators between operations languages, a family of DSLs used to program satellite operations procedures. We exploit the similarities between those languages to semi-automatically build a transformation schema between them, through the use of annotated grammars. To improve the overall translation process even more, reducing its complexity, we also propose an intermediate representation common to all operations languages. We validate our approach by semi-automatically deriving translators between some operations languages, using a prototype tool which we implemented for that purpose.

Abstract

Online Social Networks are suitable environments for e-Learning for several reasons. First of all,there are many similarities between social network groups and classrooms. Furthermore,trust relationships taking place within groups can be exploited to give to the users the needed motivations to be engaged in classroom activities. In this paper we exploit information about users’ skills,interactions and trust relationships,which are supposed to be available on Online Social Networks,to design a model for managing formation and evolution of e-Learning classes and providing suggestions to a user about the best class to join with and to the class itself about the best students to accept. The proposed approach is validated by a simulation which proves the convergence of the distributed algorithm discussed in this paper.

Abstract

Observing the features of the information actually stored in the Web, we can recognize that an important issue to be investigated is that of discovering relationships between groups of objects. In particular, a great interest is emerging on finding groups of objects mutually linked by reciprocal relationships of trustworthiness. In this paper, we propose a model to represent the case of trust-based groups of objects, and we present an algorithm for detecting trust associations in virtual communities in presence of these groups. Such an algorithm consists in determining particular sub-structures of the community, called trust groups, representing objects mutually connected by strong trust relationships. We technically formalize our idea and algorithm, and we present a complete example of how our approach works.

Abstract

Twenty healthy individuals as normal controls and 120 adults patients of both sexes were studied, distributed equally in the following clinical entities: Sepsis, Toxemia, Cancer, Post operative states, Thrombophebitis, POCD, Uraemia, Hyperlipidemia, under the effect of anticonceptive drugs, Arterial Thrombosis and Myocardial Infarction. In order to detect probable Hypercoagulability states, the following laboratory tests were performed: Thrombin time, Dosification of Fibrinogen, Fibrinogen Degradation Products (FDP), Fractions D and E of the Fibrinogen Degradations Products, Dosification of Coagulation Fraction of Factor VIII, Factor VIII Antigen, Ratio Factor VIII Antigen/Coagulation Fraction of Factor VIII and levels of Antithrombin III. In average, we found abnormalities in the following results: High levels of Fibrinogen in 66%. Fibrinogen Degradation Products abnormals in 55% for the Merskey method and 46% in the Protamine Sulfate test. Low concentration of Antithrombin III in 34%. High levels in fractions D and E of Fibrinogen Degradation Products in 33%. Increase in the Coagulation Fraction of Factor VIII in 28% and high ratio Factor VIII Antigen/Coagulation Fraction of Factor VIII in 23%. The abnormal Thrombin time only in the 17% of our patients. In the first step of the study of probable Hypercoagulability states, we found as indicatives and fesible tests from a practical point of view: The levels of Fibrinogen, the Fibrinogen Degradation Products for the Merskey method and the Protamine Sulfate test respectively, the levels of Antithrombin III, the fractions D and E of the Fibrinogen Degradation Products and the dosification of Coagulations Fraction of Factor VIII.

Abstract

Dengue virus currently causes 50–100 million infections annually. Comprehensive knowledge about the evolution of Dengue in response to selection pressure is currently unavailable, but would greatly enhance vaccine design efforts. In the current study, we sequenced 187 new dengue virus serotype 3 (DENV-3) genotype III whole genomes isolated from Asia and the Americas. We analyzed them together with previously-sequenced isolates to gain a more detailed understanding of the evolutionary adaptations existing in this prevalent American serotype. In order to analyze the phylogenetic dynamics of DENV-3 during outbreak periods; we incorporated datasets of 48 and 11 sequences spanning two major outbreaks in Venezuela during 2001 and 2007–2008, respectively. Our phylogenetic analysis of newly sequenced viruses shows that subsets of genomes cluster primarily by geographic location, and secondarily by time of virus isolation. DENV-3 genotype III sequences from Asia are significantly divergent from those from the Americas due to their geographical separation and subsequent speciation. We measured amino acid variation for the E protein by calculating the Shannon entropy at each position between Asian and American genomes. We found a cluster of seven amino acid substitutions having high variability within E protein domain III, which has previously been implicated in serotype-specific neutralization escape mutants. No novel mutations were found in the E protein of sequences isolated during either Venezuelan outbreak. Shannon entropy analysis of the NS5 polymerase mature protein revealed that a G374E mutation, in a region that contributes to interferon resistance in other flaviviruses by interfering with JAK-STAT signaling was present in both the Asian and American sequences from the 2007–2008 Venezuelan outbreak, but was absent in the sequences from the 2001 Venezuelan outbreak. Abstract

The use of network technology to provide online courses is the latest trend in the training and development industry and has been defined as the “e-Learning revolution”. On the other hand, Online Social Networks (OSNs) represent today an effective possibility to have common and easy-to-use platforms for supporting e-Learning activities. However, as underlined by previous studies, many of the proposed e-Learning systems can result in confusion and decrease the learner’s interest. In this paper, we introduce the possibility to form e-Learning classes in the context of OSNs. At the best of our knowledge, any of the approaches proposed in the past considers the evolution of on-line classes as a problem of matching the individual users’ profiles with the profiles of the classes. In this paper, we propose an algorithm that exploits a multi-agent system to suitably distribute such a matching computation on all the user devices. The good effectiveness and the promising effciency of our approach is shown by the experimental results obtained on simulated On-line Social Networks data.

Abstract

Improvements in computational and network capabilities of mobile devices along with the wide spread of wireless networks for smart cities, allow users to make accessible temporarily unused communication resources for free or for a fee. Such interesting scenario introduces, however, some critical issues due to reliability of users sharing/consuming resources, which are a further concern with respect to those, strictly referred to the security. To tackle such problems, in this paper we propose a distributed multi-agent framework, exploiting reputation information, which considers Both the price paid by mobile users for resources and some countermeasures to detect malicious users, as confirmed by experimental results.

Abstract

In Online Social Networks, in order to virally distribute some topics and, at the same time, protecting users from undesiredmessages, we propose to diffuse viral campaigns only on a second dimension of the social network. In the proposed approach, software agents assist the user by selecting the most appropriate campaigns for their owners. A users-to-campaigns matching algorithm, called Viral Filtered Diffusion, allows the agents to dynamically manage the evolution of the viral activity. Preliminary experiments clearly show the advantages in assigning to the users only campaigns compatible with their orientations.

Abstract

In this work we deal with the problem of maximizing the QoS associated to each node of a Grid Federation, by modeling it as a problem of “Grid formation”. In the proposed model each node belonging to a computational Grid, is free to join with or leave a grid with the goal of improving its satisfaction. Contextually, each node is free to search other nodes to join with its grid or removing from the grid those nodes resulting ineffective. Software agents are employed to manage the node profiles; in our model we introduce a Grid agent having the role of managing the profile of the Grid. We introduce a distributed algorithm, called GF, to handle the node activity of joining to the grid, modelled as a matching problem. We present some experiments showing the effectiveness of our approach.
