We determine the error introduced in a joint halo model analysis of galaxy-galaxy lensing and galaxy clustering observables when adopting the standard approximation of linear halo bias. Considering the Kilo-Degree Survey, we forecast that ignoring the non-linear halo bias would result in up to 5$\sigma$ offsets in the recovered cosmological parameters describing structure growth, $S_8$, and the matter density parameter, $\Omega_{\mathrm{m}}$. Galaxy shear - cosmic microwave background (CMB) lensing convergence cross-correlations contain additional information on cosmology to auto-correlations. While being immune to certain systematic effects, they are affected by the galaxy intrinsic alignments (IA). This may be responsible for the reported low lensing amplitude of the galaxy shear $\times$ CMB convergence cross-correlations, compared to the standard Planck $\Lambda$CDM (cosmological constant and cold dark matter) cosmology prediction. In this work, we investigate how IA affects the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS) galaxy lensing shear - Planck CMB lensing convergence cross-correlation and compare it to previous treatments with or without IA taken into consideration. More specifically, we compare marginalization over IA parameters and the IA self-calibration (SC) method (with additional observables defined only from the source galaxies) and prove that SC can efficiently break the degeneracy between the CMB lensing amplitude $A_{\rm lens}$ and the IA amplitude $A_{\rm IA}$. We further investigate how different systematics affect the resulting $A_{\rm IA}$ and $A_{\rm lens}$, and validate our results with the MICE2 simulation. We find that by including the SC method to constrain IA, the information loss due to the degeneracy between CMB lensing and IA is strongly reduced. The best-fit values are $A_{\rm lens}=0.84^{+0.22}_{-0.22}$ and $A_{\rm IA}=0.60^{+1.03}_{-1.03}$, while different angular scale cuts can affect $A_{\rm lens}$ by $\sim10\%$. In the early 2030s, after the end of operations for the epochal Hubble Space Telescope and the long-anticipated James Webb Space Telescope, astrophysics will lose access to a general purpose high-spatial resolution space observatory to cover the UV–optical–NIR wavelength range with a variety of imaging bandpasses and high-multiplexing mid-resolution spectroscopy. This will greatly impact astrophysical “discovery space” at visible wavelengths, in stark contrast to progress at most other wavelengths enabled by groundbreaking new facilities between 2010 and 2030. This capability gap will foreseeably limit progress in a number of fundamental research directions anticipated to be pressing in the 2030’s and beyond such as: What are the histories of star formation and cosmic element production in nearby galaxies? What can we learn about the nature of dark matter from dwarf galaxies? What is the local value of the Hubble Constant? A multi-purpose optical–NIR imaging and multiplexed spectroscopy Workhorse Camera (HWC) onboard NASA’s 4m-class Habitable Exoplanet Observatory (HabEx) space mission would provide access to these required data. HabEx is currently under study by NASA for the US Decadal Survey on Astronomy and Astrophysics 2020, and if selected would launch around 2035. Aside from its direct imaging of Earth-like exoplanets, it will have a general-observatory complement of instrumentation. The versatile Workhorse Camera will provide imaging and R$\sim $ ∼ 1000 spectroscopy from 370nm to 1800nm, diffraction-limited over the whole wavelength range, with simultaneous observations of the visible and NIR. Spectroscopic multiplexing will be achieved through microshutter arrays. All necessary HWC technology is already at Technology Readiness Level 5, hence technological risks are low. HWC has a rough-order-of-magnitude (ROM) cost of 300 M€, and could be European-funded within the cost envelope of an ESA S-class mission in the Voyage 2050 program, with matching funds by national funding agencies to construct HWC by a European instrument consortium. This White Paper is intended to put a European HabEx Workhorse Camera into ESA’s considerations. If ESA shares the wide interest and if HabEx were to be selected by NASA, there would be ample time to identify interested institutes for a European instrument consortium, including MPIA, to design, finance, and build the HabEx Workhorse Camera.

To effectively exploit large-scale structure surveys, we depend on accurate and reliable predictions of non-linear cosmological structure formation. Tools for efficient and comprehensive computational modelling are therefore essential to perform cosmological parameter inference analyses. We present the public software package ReACT, demonstrating its capability for the fast and accurate calculation of non-linear power spectra from non-standard physics. We showcase ReACT through a series of analyses on the DGP and $f(R)$ gravity models, adopting LSST-like cosmic shear power spectra. Accurate non-linear modelling with ReACT has the potential to more than double LSST's constraining power on the $f(R)$ parameter, in contrast to an analysis that is limited to the quasi-linear regime. We find that ReACT is sufficiently robust for the inference of consistent constraints on theories beyond $\Lambda$CDM for current and ongoing surveys. With further improvement, particularly in terms of the accuracy of the non-linear $\Lambda$CDM power spectrum, ReACT can, in principle, meet the accuracy requirements for future surveys such as Euclid and LSST., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, MNRAS accepted version. This report is the result of a joint discussion between the Rubin andEuclid scientific communities.The workpresented in this report was focused on designing and recommending an initial set of Derived Data products (DDPs) that could realize the science goals enabled by joint processing. All interested Rubin and Euclid data rights holders were invited to contribute via an online discussion forum and a series of virtual meetings. Strong interest in enhancing science with joint DDPs emerged from across a wide range of astrophysical domains: Solar System, the Galaxy, the Local Volume, from the nearby to the primaeval Universe, and cosmology.&nbsp

We present SKiLLS, a suite of multi-band image simulations for the weak lensing analysis of the complete Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS), dubbed KiDS-Legacy analysis. The resulting catalogues enable joint shear and redshift calibration, enhancing the realism and hence accuracy over previous efforts. To create a large volume of simulated galaxies with faithful properties and to a sufficient depth, we integrated cosmological simulations with high-quality imaging observations. We also improved the realism of simulated images by allowing the point spread function (PSF) to differ between CCD images, including stellar density variations and varying noise levels between pointings. Using realistic variable shear fields, we accounted for the impact of blended systems at different redshifts. Although the overall correction is minor, we found a clear redshift-bias correlation in the blending-only variable shear simulations, indicating the non-trivial impact of this higher-order blending effect. We also explored the impact of the PSF modelling errors and found a small yet noticeable effect on the shear bias. Finally, we conducted a series of sensitivity tests, including changing the input galaxy properties. We conclude that our fiducial shape measurement algorithm, lensfit, is robust within the requirements of lensing analyses with KiDS. As for future weak lensing surveys with tighter requirements, we suggest further investments in understanding the impact of blends at different redshifts, improving the PSF modelling algorithm and developing the shape measurement method to be less sensitive to the galaxy properties., Comment: 28 pages, 31 figures, 2 tables, minor revisions to match the final accepted version

In Galaxy And Mass Assembly Data Release 4 (GAMA DR4), we make available our full spectroscopic redshift sample. This includes 248682 galaxy spectra, and, in combination with earlier surveys, results in 330542 redshifts across five sky regions covering ~250deg^2. The redshift density, is the highest available over such a sustained area, has exceptionally high completeness (95 per cent to r_KIDS=19.65mag), and is well suited for the study of galaxy mergers, galaxy groups, and the low redshift (z, Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. One probe for systematic effects in gravitational lensing surveys is the presence of so-called B-modes in the cosmic shear two-point correlation functions \xi_\pm(\vt), since lensing is expected to produce only E-mode shear. Furthermore, there exist ambiguous modes which can not uniquely be assigned to either E- or B-mode shear. We derive explicit equations for the pure-mode shear correlation functions \xi_\pm^E/B(\vt) and their ambiguous components \xi_\pm^amb(\vt), that can be derived from the measured \xi_\pm(\vt) on a finite angular interval \tmin\le\vt\le\tmax, such that the latter can be decomposed uniquely into pure-mode functions as \xi_+=\xi_+^E+\xi_+^B+\xi_+^amb and \xi_-=\xi_-^E-\xi_-^B+\xi_-^amb. The derivation is obtained by defining a new set of COSEBIs, for which explicit relations are obtained, and which yields a smaller covariance between COSEBI modes. We derive the relation between \xi_\pm^E/B/amb and the underlying E-/B-mode power spectra. The pure-mode correlation functions can provide a diagnostics of systematics in configuration space. We then apply our results to SLICS simulations and the KiDS-1000 cosmic shear data, calculate the new COSEBIs and the pure-mode correlation functions, as well as the corresponding covariances, and show that the new statistics fit equally well to the best-fitting cosmological model as the previous KiDS-1000 analysis and recovers the same level of (insignificant) B-modes. We also consider in some detail the ambiguous modes at first- and second-order level, finding some surprising results; for example, the shear field of a point mass, when cut along a line through the center, can not be ascribed uniquely to an E-mode shear and is thus ambiguous, and the shear correlation functions resulting from a random ensemble of point masses, when measured over a finite angular range, correspond to an ambiguous mode., Comment: 24 pages, A&A, in press

Context. The assembly history of the stellar component of a massive elliptical galaxy is closely related to that of its dark matter halo. Measuring how the properties of galaxies correlate with their halo mass can help understand their evolution. Aims. We investigate how the dark matter halo mass of elliptical galaxies varies as a function of their properties, using weak gravitational lensing observations. To minimise the chances of biases, we focus on galaxy properties that can be determined robustly: the surface brightness profile and the colour. Methods. We selected 2409 central massive elliptical galaxies from the SDSS spectroscopic sample. We first measured their surface brightness profile and colours by fitting Sersic models to photometric data from the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS). We fitted their halo mass distribution as a function of redshift, rest-frame $r-$band luminosity, half-light radius and rest-frame $u-g$ colour, using KiDS weak lensing data and a Bayesian hierarchical approach. For the sake of robustness to assumptions on the large-radii behaviour of the surface brightness, we repeated the analysis replacing total luminosity and half-light radius with the luminosity within a 10~kpc aperture, $L_{r,10}$, and the light-weighted surface brightness slope, $\Gamma_{10}$. Results. We did not detect any correlation between halo mass and either half-light radius or colour, at fixed redshift and luminosity. Conclusions. Our results indicate that the average star formation efficiency of massive elliptical galaxies has little dependence on their final size or colour. We present measurements of the radial gravitational acceleration around isolated galaxies, comparing the expected gravitational acceleration given the baryonic matter with the observed gravitational acceleration, using weak lensing measurements from the fourth data release of the Kilo-Degree Survey. These measurements extend the radial acceleration relation (RAR) by 2 decades into the low-acceleration regime beyond the outskirts of the observable galaxy. We compare our RAR measurements to the predictions of two modified gravity (MG) theories: MOND and Verlinde's emergent gravity. We find that the measured RAR agrees well with the MG predictions. In addition, we find a difference of at least $6\sigma$ between the RARs of early- and late-type galaxies (split by S\'{e}rsic index and $u-r$ colour) with the same stellar mass. Current MG theories involve a gravity modification that is independent of other galaxy properties, which would be unable to explain this behaviour. The difference might be explained if only the early-type galaxies have significant ($M_{gas} \approx M_*$) circumgalactic gaseous haloes. The observed behaviour is also expected in $\Lambda$CDM models where the galaxy-to-halo mass relation depends on the galaxy formation history. We find that MICE, a $\Lambda$CDM simulation with hybrid halo occupation distribution modelling and abundance matching, reproduces the observed RAR but significantly differs from BAHAMAS, a hydrodynamical cosmological galaxy formation simulation. Our results are sensitive to the amount of circumgalactic gas; current observational constraints indicate that the resulting corrections are likely moderate. Measurements of the lensing RAR with future cosmological surveys will be able to further distinguish between MG and $\Lambda$CDM models if systematic uncertainties in the baryonic mass distribution around galaxies are reduced., Comment: 31 pages, 15 figures, published in A&A

Gravitational lensing magnification modifies the observed spatial distribution of galaxies and can severely bias cosmological probes of large-scale structure if not accurately modelled. Standard approaches to modelling this magnification bias may not be applicable in practice as many galaxy samples have complex, often implicit, selection functions. We propose and test a procedure to quantify the magnification bias induced in clustering and galaxy-galaxy lensing (GGL) signals in galaxy samples subject to a selection function beyond a simple flux limit. The method employs realistic mock data to calibrate an effective luminosity function slope, $\alpha_{\rm{obs}}$, from observed galaxy counts, which can then be used with the standard formalism. We demonstrate this method for two galaxy samples derived from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) in the redshift ranges $0.2 < z \leq 0.5$ and $0.5 < z \leq 0.75$, complemented by mock data built from the MICE2 simulation. We obtain $\alpha_{\rm{obs}} = 1.93 \pm 0.05$ and $\alpha_{\rm{obs}} = 2.62 \pm 0.28$ for the two BOSS samples. For BOSS-like lenses, we forecast a contribution of the magnification bias to the GGL signal between the multipole moments, $\ell$, of 100 and 4600 with a cumulative signal-to-noise ratio between 0.1 and 1.1 for sources from the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS), between 0.4 and 2.0 for sources from the Hyper Suprime-Cam survey (HSC), and between 0.3 and 2.8 for ESA Euclid-like source samples. These contributions are significant enough to require explicit modelling in future analyses of these and similar surveys. We present a general method to compute the nonlinear matter power spectrum for dark energy and modified gravity scenarios with percent-level accuracy. By adopting the halo model and nonlinear perturbation theory, we predict the reaction of a $\Lambda$CDM matter power spectrum to the physics of an extended cosmological parameter space. By comparing our predictions to $N$-body simulations we demonstrate that with no-free parameters we can recover the nonlinear matter power spectrum for a wide range of different $w_0$-$w_a$ dark energy models to better than 1% accuracy out to $k \approx 1 \, h \, {\rm Mpc}^{-1}$. We obtain a similar performance for both DGP and $f(R)$ gravity, with the nonlinear matter power spectrum predicted to better than 3% accuracy over the same range of scales. When including direct measurements of the halo mass function from the simulations, this accuracy improves to 1%. With a single suite of standard $\Lambda$CDM $N$-body simulations, our methodology provides a direct route to constrain a wide range of non-standard extensions to the concordance cosmology in the high signal-to-noise nonlinear regime., Comment: 18+6 pages, 15 figures. We present an independent cosmic shear analysis of the non-cosmological B-mode distortions within the public first year data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES). We find no significant detection of B-modes in a full tomographic analysis of the primary METACALIBRATION shear catalogue. This is in contrast to the secondary IM3SHAPE shear catalogue, where we detect B- modes at a significance of $\sim 3\sigma$ with a pattern that is consistent with the B-mode signature of a repeating additive shear bias across the survey. We use the COSEBIs statistic to cleanly separate the B-modes from the gravitational lensing signal (E-modes). We find good agreement between the measured E-modes and their theoretical expectation given the DES cosmological parameter constraints., Comment: 5 Pages, 2 Figures

We present a joint cosmological analysis of weak gravitational lensing observations from the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS-1000), with redshift-space galaxy clustering observations from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) and galaxy-galaxy lensing observations from the overlap between KiDS-1000, BOSS, and the spectroscopic 2-degree Field Lensing Survey. This combination of large-scale structure probes breaks the degeneracies between cosmological parameters for individual observables, resulting in a constraint on the structure growth parameter S8 = σ8? (ωm/0.3) = 0.766-0.014+0.020, which has the same overall precision as that reported by the full-sky cosmic microwave background observations from Planck. The recovered S8 amplitude is low, however, by 8.3? ±? 2.6% relative to Planck. This result builds from a series of KiDS-1000 analyses where we validate our methodology with variable depth mock galaxy surveys, our lensing calibration with image simulations and null-tests, and our optical-to-near-infrared redshift calibration with multi-band mock catalogues and a spectroscopic-photometric clustering analysis. The systematic uncertainties identified by these analyses are folded through as nuisance parameters in our cosmological analysis. Inspecting the offset between the marginalised posterior distributions, we find that the S8-difference with Planck is driven by a tension in the matter fluctuation amplitude parameter, σ8. We quantify the level of agreement between the cosmic microwave background and our large-scale structure constraints using a series of different metrics, finding differences with a significance ranging between ∼3σ, when considering the offset in S8, and ∼2σ, when considering the full multi-dimensional parameter space., Heymans, Catherine, et al.

We constrain the redshift dependence of gas pressure bias $\left\langle b_{y} P_{\mathrm{e}}\right\rangle$ (bias-weighted average electron pressure), which characterises the thermodynamics of intergalactic gas, through a combination of cross-correlations between galaxy positions and the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (tSZ) effect, as well as galaxy positions and the gravitational lensing of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). The galaxy sample is from the fourth data release of the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS). The tSZ $y$ map and the CMB lensing map are from the {\textit{Planck}} 2015 and 2018 data releases, respectively. The measurements are performed in five redshift bins with $z\lesssim1$. With these measurements, combining galaxy-tSZ and galaxy-CMB lensing cross-correlations allows us to break the degeneracy between galaxy bias and gas pressure bias, and hence constrain them simultaneously. In all redshift bins, the best-fit values of $\bpe$ are at a level of $\sim 0.3\, \mathrm{meV/cm^3}$ and increase slightly with redshift. The galaxy bias is consistent with unity in all the redshift bins. Our results are not sensitive to the non-linear details of the cross-correlation, which are smoothed out by the {\textit{Planck}} beam. Our measurements are in agreement with previous measurements as well as with theoretical predictions. We also show that our conclusions are not changed when CMB lensing is replaced by galaxy lensing, which shows the consistency of the two lensing signals despite their radically different redshift ranges. We present constraints on extensions to the standard cosmological model of a spatially flat Universe governed by general relativity, a cosmological constant (Λ), and cold dark matter (CDM) by varying the spatial curvature ωK, the sum of the neutrino masses χ mν, the dark energy equation of state parameter w, and the Hu-Sawicki f(R) gravity fR0 parameter. With the combined 3 × 2 pt measurements of cosmic shear from the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS-1000), galaxy clustering from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), and galaxy-galaxy lensing from the overlap between KiDS-1000, BOSS, and the spectroscopic 2-degree Field Lensing Survey, we find results that are fully consistent with a flat ΛCDM model with ωK = 0.011-0.057+0.054, χ mν, Tröster, T., et al.

Cosmological simulations predict that galaxies are embedded into triaxial dark matter haloes, which appear approximately elliptical in projection. Weak gravitational lensing allows us to constrain these halo shapes and thereby test the nature of dark matter. Weak lensing has already provided robust detections of the signature of halo flattening at the mass scales of groups and clusters, whereas results for galaxies have been somewhat inconclusive. Here we combine data from five weak lensing surveys (NGVSLenS, KiDS/KV450, CFHTLenS, CS82, and RCSLenS, listed in order of most to least constraining) in order to tighten observational constraints on galaxy-scale halo ellipticity for photometrically selected lens samples. We constrain f(h), the average ratio between the aligned component of the halo ellipticity and the ellipticity of the light distribution, finding, f(h) = 0.303(-0.079)(+0.080), f h, = 0 ., 303, 0.079, + 0.080, for red lens galaxies and, f(h) = 0.217(-0.159)(+0.160), 217, 0.159, + 0.160, for blue lens galaxies when assuming elliptical Navarro-Frenk-White density profiles and a linear scaling between halo ellipticity and galaxy ellipticity. Our constraints for red galaxies constitute the currently most significant (3.8 sigma) systematics-corrected detection of the signature of halo flattening at the mass scale of galaxies. Our results are in good agreement with expectations from the Millennium Simulation that apply the same analysis scheme and incorporate models for galaxy-halo misalignment. Assuming these misalignment models and the analysis assumptions stated above are correct, our measurements imply an average dark matter halo ellipticity for the studied red galaxy samples of |E-h|=0.174 +/- 0.046, where |E-h| = (1-q)/(1+q) relates to the ratio q=b/a of the minor and major axes of the projected mass distribution. Similar measurements based on larger upcoming weak lensing data sets can help to calibrate models for intrinsic galaxy alignments, which constitute an important source of systematic uncertainty in cosmological weak lensing studies.

We present cosmological constraints from a cosmic shear analysis of the fourth data release of the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS-1000), doubling the survey area with nine-band optical and near-infrared photometry with respect to previous KiDS analyses. Adopting a spatially flat $\Lambda$CDM model, we find $S_8 = \sigma_8 (\Omega_{\rm m}/0.3)^{0.5} = 0.759^{+0.024}_{-0.021}$ for our fiducial analysis, which is in $3\sigma$ tension with the prediction of the Planck Legacy analysis of the cosmic microwave background. We compare our fiducial COSEBIs (Complete Orthogonal Sets of E/B-Integrals) analysis with complementary analyses of the two-point shear correlation function and band power spectra, finding results to be in excellent agreement. We investigate the sensitivity of all three statistics to a number of measurement, astrophysical, and modelling systematics, finding our $S_8$ constraints to be robust and dominated by statistical errors. Our cosmological analysis of different divisions of the data pass the Bayesian internal consistency tests, with the exception of the second tomographic bin. As this bin encompasses low redshift galaxies, carrying insignificant levels of cosmological information, we find that our results are unchanged by the inclusion or exclusion of this sample., Comment: 33 pages, 14 figures, 7 tables, Accepted to be published in A&A. We conduct a pseudo-$C_\ell$ analysis of the tomographic cross-correlation between 1000 deg$^2$ of weak lensing data from the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS-1000) and the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (tSZ) effect measured by Planck and the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT). Using HMx, a halo-model-based approach that consistently models the gas, star, and dark matter components, we are able to derive constraints on both cosmology and baryon feedback for the first time from these data, marginalising over redshift uncertainties, intrinsic alignment of galaxies, and contamination by the cosmic infrared background (CIB). We find our results to be insensitive to the CIB, while intrinsic alignment provides a small but significant contribution to the lensing--tSZ cross-correlation. The cosmological constraints are consistent with those of other low-redshift probes and prefer strong baryon feedback. The inferred amplitude of the lensing--tSZ cross-correlation signal, which scales as $\sigma_8(\Omega_\mathrm{m}/0.3)^{0.2}$, is low by $\sim 2\,\sigma$ compared to the primary cosmic microwave background constraints by Planck. The lensing--tSZ measurements are then combined with pseudo-$C_\ell$ measurements of KiDS-1000 cosmic shear into a novel joint analysis, accounting for the full cross-covariance between the probes, providing tight cosmological constraints by breaking parameter degeneracies inherent to both probes. The joint analysis gives an improvement of 40% on the constraint of $S_8=\sigma_8\sqrt{\Omega_\mathrm{m}/0.3}$ over cosmic shear alone, while providing constraints on baryon feedback consistent with hydrodynamical simulations, demonstrating the potential of such joint analyses with baryonic tracers such as the tSZ effect. We measure the cross-correlation between galaxy weak lensing data from the Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS-1000, DR4) and cosmic microwave background (CMB) lensing data from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT, DR4) and the Planck Legacy survey. We constrain cosmological parameters from a joint cosmic shear analysis of peak-counts and the two-point shear correlation functions, as measured from the Dark Energy Survey (DES-Y1). We find the structure growth parameter $S_8\equiv \sigma _8\sqrt{\Omega _{\rm m}/0.3} = 0.766^{+0.033}_{-0.038}$ which, at 4.8 per cent precision, provides one of the tightest constraints on S8 from the DES-Y1 weak lensing data. In our simulation-based method we determine the expected DES-Y1 peak-count signal for a range of cosmologies sampled in four w cold dark matter parameters (Ωm, σ8, h, w0). We also determine the joint covariance matrix with over 1000 realizations at our fiducial cosmology. With mock DES-Y1 data we calibrate the impact of photometric redshift and shear calibration uncertainty on the peak-count, marginalizing over these uncertainties in our cosmological analysis. Using dedicated training samples we show that our measurements are unaffected by mass resolution limits in the simulation, and that our constraints are robust against uncertainty in the effect of baryon feedback. Accurate modelling for the impact of intrinsic alignments on the tomographic peak-count remains a challenge, currently limiting our exploitation of cross-correlated peak counts between high and low redshift bins. We demonstrate that once calibrated, a fully tomographic joint peak-count and correlation functions analysis has the potential to reach a 3 per cent precision on S8 for DES-Y1. Our methodology can be adopted to model any statistic that is sensitive to the non-Gaussian information encoded in the shear field. In order to accelerate the development of these beyond-two-point cosmic shear studies, our simulations are made available to the community upon request.

We present a mitigation strategy to reduce the impact of non-linear galaxy bias on the joint `$3 \times 2 $pt' cosmological analysis of weak lensing and galaxy surveys. The $\Psi$-statistics that we adopt are based on Complete Orthogonal Sets of E/B Integrals (COSEBIs). As such they are designed to minimise the contributions to the observable from the smallest physical scales where models are highly uncertain. We demonstrate that $\Psi$-statistics carry the same constraining power as the standard two-point galaxy clustering and galaxy-galaxy lensing statistics, but are significantly less sensitive to scale-dependent galaxy bias. Using two galaxy bias models, motivated by halo-model fits to data and simulations, we quantify the error in a standard $3 \times 2$pt analysis where constant galaxy bias is assumed. Even when adopting conservative angular scale cuts, that degrade the overall cosmological parameter constraints, we find of order $1 \sigma$ biases for Stage III surveys on the cosmological parameter $S_8 = \sigma_8(\Omega_{\rm m}/0.3)^{\alpha}$. This arises from a leakage of the smallest physical scales to all angular scales in the standard two-point correlation functions. In contrast, when analysing $\Psi$-statistics under the same approximation of constant galaxy bias, we show that the bias on the recovered value for $S_8$ can be decreased by a factor of $\sim 2$, with less conservative scale cuts. Given the challenges in determining accurate galaxy bias models in the highly non-linear regime, we argue that $3 \times 2$pt analyses should move towards new statistics that are less sensitive to the smallest physical scales., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures, accepted to be published in MNRAS

We carry out a multi-probe self-consistency test of the flat Lambda Cold Dark Matter (ΛCDM) model with the aim of exploring potential causes of the reported tensions between high- and low-redshift cosmological observations. We divide the model into two theory regimes determined by the smooth background (geometry) and the evolution of matter density fluctuations (growth), each governed by an independent set of ΛCDM cosmological parameters. This extended model is constrained by a combination of weak gravitational lensing measurements from the Kilo-Degree Survey, galaxy clustering signatures extracted from Sloan Digital Sky Survey campaigns and the Six-Degree Field Galaxy Survey, and the angular baryon acoustic scale and the primordial scalar fluctuation power spectrum measured in Planck cosmic microwave background (CMB) data. For both the weak lensing data set individually and the combined probes, we find strong consistency between the geometry and growth parameters, as well as with the posterior of standard ΛCDM analysis. In the non-split analysis, for which one single set of parameters was used, tension in the amplitude of matter density fluctuations as measured by the parameter S8 persists at around 3σ, with a 1.5% constraint of S8 = 0.776−0.008+0.016 for the combined probes. We also observe a less significant preference (at least 2σ) for higher values of the Hubble constant, H0 = 70.5−1.5+0.7 km s−1 Mpc−1, as well as for lower values of the total matter density parameter Ωm = 0.289−0.005+0.007 compared to the full Planck analysis. Including the subset of the CMB information in the probe combination enhances these differences rather than alleviate them, which we link to the discrepancy between low and high multipoles in Planck data. Our geometry versus growth analysis does not yet yield clear signs regarding whether the origin of the discrepancies lies in ΛCDM structure growth or expansion history but holds promise as an insightful test for forthcoming, more powerful data.

We present measurements of $f_h$, the ratio of the aligned components of the projected halo and galaxy ellipticities, for a sample of central galaxies using weak gravitational lensing data from the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS). Using a lens galaxy shape estimation that is more sensitive to outer galaxy regions, we find $f_{\rm h}=0.50\pm0.20$ for our full sample and $f_{\rm h}=0.55\pm0.19$ for an intrinsically red (and therefore higher stellar-mass) sub-sample, rejecting the hypothesis of round halos and/or galaxies being un-aligned with their parent halo at $2.5\sigma$ and $2.9\sigma$, respectively. We quantify the 93.4% purity of our central galaxy sample using numerical simulations and overlapping spectroscopy from the Galaxy and Mass Assembly survey. This purity ensures that the interpretation of our measurements is not complicated by the presence of a significant fraction of satellite galaxies. Restricting our central galaxy ellipticity measurement to the inner isophotes, we find $f_{\rm h}=0.34\pm0.17$ for our red sub-sample, suggesting that the outer galaxy regions are more aligned with their dark matter halos compared to the inner regions. Our results are in agreement with previous studies and suggest that lower mass halos are rounder and/or less aligned with their host galaxy than samples of more massive galaxies, studied in galaxy groups and clusters., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Several semi-analytic models (SAMs) try to explain how galaxies form, evolve and interact inside the dark matter large-scale structure. These SAMs can be tested by comparing their predictions for galaxy-galaxy-galaxy-lensing (G3L), which is weak gravitational lensing around galaxy pairs, with observations. We evaluate the SAMs by Henriques et al. (2015; H15) and by Lagos et al. (2012; L12), implemented in the Millennium Run, by comparing their predictions for G3L to observations at smaller scales than previous studies and also for pairs of lens galaxies from different populations. We compare the G3L signal predicted by the SAMs to measurements in the overlap of the Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey (GAMA), the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS), and the VISTA Kilo-degree Infrared Galaxy survey (VIKING), splitting lens galaxies into two colour and five stellar-mass samples. Using an improved G3L estimator, we measure the three-point correlation of the matter distribution for mixed lens pairs with galaxies from different samples, and unmixed lens pairs with galaxies from the same sample. Predictions by the H15 SAM agree with the observations for all colour-selected and all but one stellar-mass-selected sample with 95% confidence. Deviations occur for lenses with stellar masses below $9.5h^{-2}\mathrm{M}_\odot$ at scales below $0.2h^{-1}\mathrm{Mpc}$. Predictions by the L12 SAM for stellar-mass selected samples and red galaxies are significantly higher than observed, while the predicted signal for blue galaxy pairs is too low. The L12 SAM predicts more pairs of small stellar-mass and red galaxies than the H15 SAM and the observations, as well as fewer pairs of blue galaxies. Likely explanations are different treatments of environmental effects by the SAMs and different models of the initial mass function. Measuring cosmic shear in wide-field imaging surveys requires accurate knowledge of the redshift distribution of all sources. The clustering-redshift technique exploits the angular cross-correlation of a target galaxy sample with unknown redshifts and a reference sample with known redshifts, and is an attractive alternative to colour-based methods of redshift calibration. We test the performance of such clustering redshift measurements using mock catalogues that resemble the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS). These mocks are created from the MICE simulation and closely mimic the properties of the KiDS source sample and the overlapping spectroscopic reference samples. We quantify the performance of the clustering redshifts by comparing the cross-correlation results with the true redshift distributions in each of the five KiDS photometric redshift bins. Such a comparison to an informative model is necessary due to the incompleteness of the reference samples at high redshifts. Context. The density split statistics in weak gravitational lensing analyses probes the correlation between regions of different (foreground) galaxy number densities and their weak lensing signal, measured by the shape distortion of background galaxies. Aims. In this paper, we reconsider density split statistics, by constructing a new angular filter function that is adapted to the expected relation between galaxy number density and shear pattern, in a way that the filter weighting the galaxy number density is matched to the filter that is used to quantify the shear signal. Methods. We use the results of numerical ray-tracing simulations, specifically through Millennium Simulation supplemented by a galaxy distribution based on a semi-analytic model, to construct a matched pair of adapted filter functions for the galaxy density and the tangential shear signal. We compare the performance of our new filter to the previously used top-hat filter, applying both to a different and independent set of numerical simulations (SLICS, cosmo-SLICS). Results. We show that the adapted filter yields a better correlation between the total matter and the galaxy distribution. Furthermore, the adapted filter provides a larger signal-to-noise ratio to constrain the bias between the total matter and the galaxy distribution, and we show that it is, in general, a more sensitive discriminator between different cosmologies, with the exception of cosmologies with very large $\sigma_8$ values. The physics of gravity on cosmological scales affects both the rate of assembly of large-scale structure, and the gravitational lensing of background light through this cosmic web. By comparing the amplitude of these different observational signatures, we can construct tests that can distinguish general relativity from its potential modifications. We used the latest weak gravitational lensing dataset from the Kilo-Degree Survey, KiDS-1000, in conjunction with overlapping galaxy spectroscopic redshift surveys BOSS and 2dFLenS, to perform the most precise existing amplitude-ratio test. We measured the associated E_G statistic with 15-20% errors, in five dz = 0.1 tomographic redshift bins in the range 0.2 < z < 0.7, on projected scales up to 100 Mpc/h. The scale-independence and redshift-dependence of these measurements are consistent with the theoretical expectation of general relativity in a Universe with matter density Omega_m = 0.27 +/- 0.04. We present updated cosmological constraints for the KiDS+VIKING-450 cosmic shear data set (KV450), estimated using redshift distributions and photometric samples defined using self-organising maps (SOMs). Our fiducial analysis finds marginal posterior constraints of $S_8\equiv\sigma_8\sqrt{\Omega_{\rm m}/0.3}=0.716^{+0.043}_{-0.038}$; smaller than, but otherwise consistent with, previous work using this data set ($|\Delta S_8| = 0.023$). We analyse additional samples and redshift distributions constructed in three ways: excluding certain spectroscopic surveys during redshift calibration, excluding lower-confidence spectroscopic redshifts in redshift calibration, and considering only photometric sources which are jointly calibrated by at least three spectroscopic surveys. In all cases, the method utilised here proves robust: we find a maximal deviation from our fiducial analysis of $|\Delta S_8| \leq 0.011$ for all samples defined and analysed using our SOM. To demonstrate the reduction in systematic biases found within our analysis, we highlight our results when performing redshift calibration without the DEEP2 spectroscopic data set. In this case we find marginal posterior constraints of $S_8=0.707_{-0.042}^{+0.046}$; a difference with respect to the fiducial that is both significantly smaller than, and in the opposite direction to, the equivalent shift from previous work. These results suggest that our improved cosmological parameter estimates are insensitive to pathological misrepresentation of photometric sources by the spectroscopy used for direct redshift calibration, and therefore that this systematic effect cannot be responsible for the observed difference between $S_8$ estimates made with KV450 and Planck CMB probes., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, 4 appendices, accepted for publication in A&A Letters

We present cosmological constraints from a joint cosmic shear analysis of the Kilo-Degree Survey (KV450) and the Dark Energy Survey (DES-Y1), conducted using Complete Orthogonal Sets of E/B-Integrals (COSEBIs). With COSEBIs we isolate any B-modes which have a non-cosmic shear origin and demonstrate the robustness of our cosmological E-mode analysis as no significant B-modes are detected. We highlight how COSEBIs are fairly insensitive to the amplitude of the non-linear matter power spectrum at high $k$-scales, mitigating the uncertain impact of baryon feedback in our analysis. COSEBIs, therefore, allow us to utilise additional small-scale information, improving the DES-Y1 joint constraints on $S_8=\sigma_8(\Omega_{\rm m}/0.3)^{0.5}$ and $\Omega_{\rm m}$ by $20\%$. Adopting a flat $\Lambda$CDM model we find $S_8=0.755^{+0.019}_{-0.021}$, which is in $3.2\sigma$ tension with the Planck Legacy analysis of the cosmic microwave background., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 15 pages, 7 figures

We present a semi-analytic model for the shear two-point correlation function of a cosmic shear survey with non-uniform depth. Ground-based surveys are subject to depth variations that primarily arise through varying atmospheric conditions. For a survey like the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS), we find that the measured depth variation increases the amplitude of the observed shear correlation function at the level of a few percent out to degree-scales, relative to the assumed uniform-depth case. The impact on the inferred cosmological parameters is shown to be insignificant for a KiDS-like survey. For next-generation cosmic shear experiments, however, we conclude that variable depth should be accounted for.

We present a tomographic cosmic shear analysis of the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS) combined with the VISTA Kilo-Degree Infrared Galaxy Survey (VIKING). This is the first time that a full optical to near-infrared data set has been used for a wide-field cosmological weak lensing experiment. This unprecedented data, spanning $450~$deg$^2$, allows us to improve significantly the estimation of photometric redshifts, such that we are able to include robustly higher-redshift sources for the lensing measurement, and - most importantly - solidify our knowledge of the redshift distributions of the sources. Based on a flat $\Lambda$CDM model we find $S_8\equiv\sigma_8\sqrt{\Omega_{\rm m}/0.3}=0.737_{-0.036}^{+0.040}$ in a blind analysis from cosmic shear alone. The tension between KiDS cosmic shear and the Planck-Legacy CMB measurements remains in this systematically more robust analysis, with $S_8$ differing by $2.3\sigma$. This result is insensitive to changes in the priors on nuisance parameters for intrinsic alignment, baryon feedback, and neutrino mass. KiDS shear measurements are calibrated with a new, more realistic set of image simulations and no significant B-modes are detected in the survey, indicating that systematic errors are under control. When calibrating our redshift distributions by assuming the 30-band COSMOS-2015 photometric redshifts are correct (following the Dark Energy Survey and the Hyper Suprime-Cam Survey), we find the tension with Planck is alleviated. We analytically model the non-linear effects induced by massive neutrinos on the total matter power spectrum using the halo model reaction framework of Cataneo et al. 2019. In this approach the halo model is used to determine the relative change to the matter power spectrum caused by new physics beyond the concordance cosmology. Using standard fitting functions for the halo abundance and the halo mass-concentration relation, the total matter power spectrum in the presence of massive neutrinos is predicted to percent-level accuracy, out to $k=10 \, h \, {\rm Mpc}^{-1}$. We find that refining the prescriptions for the halo properties using $N$-body simulations improves the recovered accuracy to better than 1%. This paper serves as another demonstration for how the halo model reaction framework, in combination with a single suite of standard $\Lambda$CDM simulations, can recover percent-level accurate predictions for beyond-$\Lambda$CDM matter power spectra, well into the non-linear regime., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures; matches MNRAS accepted version

We present a catalog of quasars and corresponding redshifts in the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS) Data Release 4. We trained machine learning (ML) models, using optical ugri and near-infrared ZYJHK_s bands, on objects known from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectroscopy. We define inference subsets from the 45 million objects of the KiDS photometric data limited to 9-band detections. We show that projections of the high-dimensional feature space can be successfully used to investigate the estimations. The model creation employs two test subsets: randomly selected and the faintest objects, which allows to fit the bias versus variance trade-off. We tested three ML models: random forest (RF), XGBoost (XGB), and artificial neural network (ANN). We find that XGB is the most robust model for classification, while ANN performs the best for combined classification and redshift. The inference results are tested using number counts, Gaia parallaxes, and other quasar catalogs. Based on these tests, we derived the minimum classification probability which provides the best purity versus completeness trade-off: p(QSO_cand) > 0.9 for r < 22 and p(QSO_cand) > 0.98 for 22 < r < 23.5. We find 158,000 quasar candidates in the safe inference subset (r < 22) and an additional 185,000 candidates in the reliable extrapolation regime (22 < r < 23.5). Test-data purity equals 97% and completeness is 94%; the latter drops by 3% in the extrapolation to data fainter by one magnitude than the training set. The photometric redshifts were modeled with Gaussian uncertainties. The redshift error (mean and scatter) equals 0.01 +/- 0.1 in the safe subset and -0.0004 +/- 0.2 in the extrapolation, in a redshift range of 0.14 < z < 3.63. Our success of the extrapolation challenges the way that models are optimized and applied at the faint data end. Zhang, We describe the observations and resultant galaxy cluster catalog from the 2770 deg2 SPTpol Extended Cluster Survey (SPT-ECS). Clusters are identified via the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect and confirmed with a combination of archival and targeted follow-up data, making particular use of data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES). With incomplete follow-up we have confirmed as clusters 244 of 266 candidates at a detection significance ξ ≥ 5 and an additional 204 systems at 4 < ξ < 5. The confirmed sample has a median mass of M500c ~ 4.4 ¿ 1014 M☉ h70 -1 and a median redshift of z = 0.49, and we have identified 44 strong gravitational lenses in the sample thus far. Radio data are used to characterize contamination to the SZ signal; the median contamination for confirmed clusters is predicted to be ∼1% of the SZ signal at the ξ > 4 threshold, and 10% of their measured SZ flux. We associate SZ-selected clusters, from both SPT-ECS and the SPT-SZ survey, with clusters from the DES redMaPPer sample, and we find an offset distribution between the SZ center and central galaxy in general agreement with previous work, though with a larger fraction of clusters with significant offsets. Adopting a fixed Planck-like cosmology, we measure the optical richness-SZ mass (l - M) relation and find it to be 28% shallower than that from a weak-lensing analysis of the DES data-a difference significant at the 4σ level-with the relations intersecting at λ = 60. The SPT-ECS cluster sample will be particularly useful for studying the evolution of massive clusters and, in combination with DES lensing observations and the SPT-SZ cluster sample, will be an important component of future cosmological analyses., This work was performed in the context of the South Pole Telescope scientific program. Accurate photometric redshift calibration is central to the robustness of all cosmology constraints from cosmic shear surveys. Analyses of the KiDS re-weighted training samples from all overlapping spectroscopic surveys to provide a direct redshift calibration. Using self-organising maps (SOMs) we demonstrate that this spectroscopic compilation is sufficiently complete for KiDS, representing $99\%$ of the effective 2D cosmic shear sample. We use the SOM to define a $100\%$ represented `gold' cosmic shear sample, per tomographic bin. Using mock simulations of KiDS and the spectroscopic training set, we estimate the uncertainty on the SOM redshift calibration, and find that photometric noise, sample variance, and spectroscopic selection effects (including redshift and magnitude incompleteness) induce a combined maximal scatter on the bias of the redshift distribution reconstruction ($\Delta \langle z \rangle=\langle z \rangle_{\rm est}-\langle z \rangle_{\rm true}$) of $\sigma_{\Delta \langle z \rangle} \leq 0.006$ in all tomographic bins. We show that the SOM calibration is unbiased in the cases of noiseless photometry and perfectly representative spectroscopic datasets, as expected from theory. The inclusion of both photometric noise and spectroscopic selection effects in our mock data introduces a maximal bias of $\Delta \langle z \rangle =0.013\pm0.006$, or $\Delta \langle z \rangle \leq 0.025$ at $97.5\%$ confidence, once quality flags have been applied to the SOM. The method presented here represents a significant improvement over the previously adopted direct redshift calibration implementation for KiDS, owing to its diagnostic and quality assurance capabilities. We present a new measurement of $E_{\rm G}$, which combines measurements of weak gravitational lensing, real-space galaxy clustering and redshift space distortions. This statistic was proposed as a consistency test of General Relativity (GR) that is insensitive to linear, deterministic galaxy bias and the matter clustering amplitude. We combine deep imaging data from KiDS with overlapping spectroscopy from 2dFLenS, BOSS DR12 and GAMA and find $E_{\rm G}(\overline{z}=0.267)=0.43 \pm 0.13$ (GAMA), $E_{\rm G}(\overline{z}=0.305)=0.27 \pm 0.08$ (LOWZ+2dFLOZ) and $E_{\rm G}(\overline{z}=0.554)=0.26 \pm 0.07$ (CMASS+2dFHIZ). We demonstrate that the existing tension in the value of the matter density parameter hinders the robustness of this statistic as solely a test of GR. We find that our $E_{\rm G}$ measurements, as well as existing ones in the literature, favour a lower matter density cosmology than the Cosmic Microwave Background. For a flat $\Lambda$CDM Universe and assuming GR, we find $\Omega_{\rm m}(z=0)=0.25\pm0.03$. We present measurements of the weak gravitational lensing shear power spectrum based on $450$ sq. deg. of imaging data from the Kilo Degree Survey. We employ a quadratic estimator in two and three redshift bins and extract band powers of redshift auto-correlation and cross-correlation spectra in the multipole range $76 \leq \ell \leq 1310$. The cosmological interpretation of the measured shear power spectra is performed in a Bayesian framework assuming a $\Lambda$CDM model with spatially flat geometry, while accounting for small residual uncertainties in the shear calibration and redshift distributions as well as marginalising over intrinsic alignments, baryon feedback and an excess-noise power model. Moreover, massive neutrinos are included in the modelling. The cosmological main result is expressed in terms of the parameter combination $S_8 \equiv \sigma_8 \sqrt{\Omega_{\rm m}/0.3}$ yielding $S_8 = \ 0.651 \pm 0.058$ (3 z-bins), confirming the recently reported tension in this parameter with constraints from Planck at $3.2\sigma$ (3 z-bins). We cross-check the results of the 3 z-bin analysis with the weaker constraints from the 2 z-bin analysis and find them to be consistent. We measure the cross-correlation between Fermi-LAT gamma-ray photons and over 1000 deg$^2$ of weak lensing data from the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Lensing Survey (CFHTLenS), the Red Cluster Sequence Lensing Survey (RCSLenS), and the Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS). We present the first measurement of tomographic weak lensing cross-correlations and the first application of spectral binning to cross-correlations between gamma rays and weak lensing. The measurements are performed using an angular power spectrum estimator while the covariance is estimated using an analytical prescription. We verify the accuracy of our covariance estimate by comparing it to two internal covariance estimators. Based on the non-detection of a cross-correlation signal, we derive constraints on weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matter. We compute exclusion limits on the dark matter annihilation cross-section $\langle\sigma_\rm{ann} v \rangle$, decay rate $\Gamma_\rm{dec}$, and particle mass $m_\rm{DM}$. We find that in the absence of a cross-correlation signal, tomography does not significantly improve the constraining power of the analysis. Assuming a strong contribution to the gamma-ray flux due to small-scale clustering of dark matter and accounting for known astrophysical sources of gamma rays, we exclude the thermal relic cross-section for particle masses of $m_\rm{DM}\lesssim 20$ GeV., Comment: 19 pages, 17 figures, accepted in MNRAS

We reanalyse the anisotropic galaxy clustering measurement from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), demonstrating that using the full shape information provides cosmological constraints that are comparable to other low-redshift probes. We find $\Omega_\mathrm{m} = 0.317^{+0.015}_{-0.019}$, $\sigma_8 = 0.710\pm 0.049$, and $h = 0.704\pm 0.024$ for flat $\Lambda$CDM cosmologies using uninformative priors on $\Omega_\mathrm{c}h^2$, $100\theta_\mathrm{MC}$, $\ln 10^{10} A_{s}$, and $n_{s}$, and a prior on $\Omega_\mathrm{b}h^2$ that is much wider than current constraints. We quantify the agreement between the Planck 2018 constraints from the cosmic microwave background and BOSS, finding the two data sets to be consistent within a flat $\Lambda$CDM cosmology using the Bayes factor as well as the prior-insensitive suspiciousness statistic. Combining two low-redshift probes, we jointly analyse the clustering of BOSS galaxies with weak lensing measurements from the Kilo-Degree Survey (KV450). The combination of BOSS and KV450 improves the measurement by up to 45%, constraining $\sigma_8 = 0.702\pm 0.029$ and $S_8 = \sigma_8\sqrt{\Omega_\mathrm{m}/0.3} = 0.728\pm 0.026$. Over the full 5D parameter space, the odds in favour of single cosmology describing galaxy clustering, lensing, and the cosmic microwave background are $7\pm2$. Exploiting the full statistical power of future cosmic shear surveys will necessitate improvements to the accuracy with which the gravitational lensing signal is measured. We present a framework for calibrating shear with image simulations that demonstrates the importance of including realistic correlations between galaxy morphology, size and more importantly, photometric redshifts. This realism is essential so that selection and shape measurement biases can be calibrated accurately for a tomographic cosmic shear analysis. We emulate Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS) observations of the COSMOS field using morphological information from {\it Hubble} Space Telescope imaging, faithfully reproducing the measured galaxy properties from KiDS observations of the same field. We calibrate our shear measurements from lensfit, and find through a range of sensitivity tests that lensfit is robust and unbiased within the allowed 2 per cent tolerance of our study. Our results show that the calibration has to be performed by selecting the tomographic samples in the simulations, consistent with the actual cosmic shear analysis, because the joint distributions of galaxy properties are found to vary with redshift. Ignoring this redshift variation could result in misestimating the shear bias by an amount that exceeds the allowed tolerance. To improve the calibration for future cosmic shear analyses, it will be essential to also correctly account for the measurement of photometric redshifts, which requires simulating multi-band observations., 31 pages, 17 figures and 2 tables. Observations of galaxies and galaxy clusters in the local universe can account for only $\sim\,10\%$ of the total baryon content. Cosmological simulations predict that the `missing baryons' are spread throughout filamentary structures in the cosmic web, forming a low-density gas with temperatures of $10^5-10^7\,\!$K. We search for this warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) by stacking the Planck Compton $y$-parameter map of the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect for 1,002,334 pairs of CMASS galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We model the contribution from the galaxy halo pairs assuming spherical symmetry, finding a residual tSZ signal at the $2.9\mbox{$\sigma$}$ level from a stacked filament of length $10.5\,h^{-1}\,\rm Mpc$ with a Compton parameter magnitude $y=(0.6\pm0.2)\times10^{-8}$. We consider possible sources of contamination and conclude that bound gas in haloes may contribute only up to $20\%$ of the measured filamentary signal. To estimate the filament gas properties we measure the gravitational lensing signal for the same sample of galaxy pairs; in combination with the tSZ signal, this yields an inferred gas density of $\rho_{\rm b}=(5.5\pm 2.9)\times\bar{\rho_{\rm b}}$ with a temperature $T=(2.7\pm 1.7) \times 10^6\,$K. This result is consistent with the predicted WHIM properties, and overall the filamentary gas can account for $ 11\pm 7\%$ of the total baryon content of the Universe. We also see evidence that the gas filament extends beyond the galaxy pair. Averaging over this longer baseline boosts the significance of the tSZ signal and increases the associated baryon content to $28\pm 12\%$ of the global value., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures; accepted for publication in A&A
