During the past two years, significant experimental and theoretical progress has been made in the US heavy ion fusion science program in longitudinal beam compression, ion-beam-driven warm dense matter, beam acceleration, high brightness beam transport, and advanced theory and numerical simulations. Innovations in longitudinal compression of intense ion beams by >50X propagating through background plasma enable initial beam target experiments in warm dense matter to begin within the next two years. We are assessing how these new techniques might apply to heavy ion fusion drivers for inertial fusion energy.

Key scientific results from recent experiments, modeling tools, and heavy ion accelerator research are summarized that explore ways to investigate the properties of high energy density matter in heavy-ion-driven targets, in particular, strongly-coupled plasmas at 0.01 to 0.1 times solid density for studies of warm dense matter, which is a frontier area in high energy density physics. Pursuit of these near-term objectives has resulted in many innovations that will ultimately benefit heavy ion inertial fusion energy. These include: neutralized ion beam compression and focusing, which hold the promise of greatly improving the stage between the accelerator and the target chamber in a fusion power plant; and the Pulse Line Ion Accelerator (PLIA), which may lead to compact, low-cost modular linac drivers.

The worldwide heavy-ion fusion effort has made a large amount of progress over almost three decades of research on the intense beam physics and concepts needed for an inertial fusion driver. In the 1970s, ‘80s, and ‘90s in the US, most experiments used driver parameters scaled to low energy and low line charge density in order to study, most often with a single beam, the physics of high-perveance beams. More recently, the US program has introduced higher line charge density experiments, where the beam space charge potential is significant. This allows investigation of the production, and effect on the beam, of stray electrons. Increasingly, the possibilities for neutralizing plasmas are also being investigated, both just upstream and in the target chamber. This talk will outline the scientific issues that remain to be examined. These include issues of longitudinal compression, dynamic aperture, electron/ion instabilities, effect of electrons and gas on the beam, longitudinal emittance evolution, halo production, inductive effects at high energy, multiple beams, innovative final focus approaches, and driver issues for solenoidal transport. An outline of future experiments to address these issues will be presented and discussed.

The primary mission of this experiment is to investigate aperture fill factors acceptable for the transport of space-charge-dominated heavy-ion beams at high space-charge intensity (line charge density up to ~ 0.2 µC/m) over long pulse durations (4 µs) in alternating gradient focusing lattices of electrostatic or magnetic quadrupoles. The experiment also contributes to the practical baseline knowledge of intense beam manipulations necessary for the design, construction and operation of a heavy ion driver for inertial fusion. This experiment is testing transport issues resulting from nonlinear space-charge effects and collective modes, beam centroid alignment and beam steering, matching, image charges, halo, electron cloud effects, and longitudinal bunch control. We first present the results for a coasting 1 MeV K + ion beam transported through the first ten electrostatic transport quadrupoles, measured with optical beam-imaging and double-slit phase-space diagnostics. This includes studies at two different radial fill factors (60% and 80%), for which the beam transverse distribution was characterized in detail. Lengthwise compression of space-charge-dominated beams is needed to obtain the high input power required for heavy-ion fusion. The “drift compression” scenario studied here first applies a head-to-tail velocity variation with the beam tail moving faster than the head. As the beam drifts, the longitudinal space-charge field slows compression, leaving the beam nearly monoenergetic as it enters the final-focus magnets. This paper presents initial work to model this compression scenario. Fluid and particle simulations are compared, and several strategies for setting up the compression schedule are discussed.

We consider beams that are described by a four-dimensional (4D) transverse distribution f (x, y, x′, y′), where x′ ≡ px /pz and z is the axial coordinate. A two-slit scanner is commonly employed to measure, over a sequence of shots, a two-dimensional (2D) projection of such a beam's phase space, for example, f (x, x′). Another scanner might yield f (y, y′) or, using crossed slits, f (x, y). A small set of such 2D scans does not uniquely specify f (x, y, x′, y′). We have developed “tomographic” techniques to synthesize a “reasonable” set of particles in a 4D phase space having 2D densities consistent with the experimental data. We briefly summarize one method and describe progress in validating it, using simulations of the High Current Experiment at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Significant experimental and theoretical progress has been made in the U.S. heavy ion fusion program on high-current sources, transport, and focusing. Currents over 200 mA have been transported through a matching section and 10 half-lattice periods with electric quadrupoles. An experiment shows control of high-beam current with an aperture, while avoiding secondary electrons. New theory and simulations of the neutralization of intense beam space charge with plasma in various focusing chamber configurations predict that near-emittance-limited beam focal spot sizes can be obtained even with beam perveance (ratio of beam space potential to ion energy) >10× higher than in earlier HIF focusing experiments. Progress in a new focusing experiment with plasma neutralization up to 10−3 perveance, and designs for a next-step experiment to study beam brightness evolution from source to target are described.

In the planned heavy-ion Integrated Research Experiments (IRE), final beam kinetic energy will be low compared to a driver, giving perveance significantly larger than the driver, and making final focus to a small spot comparatively much more difficult. Splitting of beams ahead of the final focus system would allow economical transport of large beams through the IRE accelerator, while maintaining focusability. Since splitting decouples the number of beams transported in the accelerator from what is required at final focus, it could also lower the cost of a driver. In this paper we consider the effects on beam quality of transverse beam splitting. The system of most interest consists of one or more consecutive magnetic septa. PIC simulations of this case are discussed, along with engineering considerations.

An overview of experiments is presented, in which the physical dimensions, transverse emittance and generalized perveance are scaled to explore driver-relevant beam dynamics. Among these are beam merging, focusing to a small spot, and bending and recirculating beams. The Virtual National Laboratory for Heavy Ion Fusion (VNL) is also developing two driver-scale beam experiments involving heavy-ion beams with I beam ∼1 A to provide guidance for the design of an Integrated Research Experiment (IRE) for driver system studies within the next 5 years. Multiple-beam sources and injectors are being designed and a one-beam module will be built and tested. Another experimental effort will be the transport of such a beam through ∼100 magnetic quadrupoles. The experiment will determine transport limits at high aperture fill factors, beam halo formation, and the influence on beam properties of secondary electron production and neutral atom desorption from the vacuum pipe wall. Research into driver technology will be briefly presented, including the development of ferromagnetic core materials, induction core pulsers, multiple-beam quadrupole arrays and plasma channel formation experiments for pinched transport in reactor chambers.

We describe the goals and research program leading to the Heavy Ion Integrated Research Experiment (IRE). We review the basic constraints which lead to a design and give examples of parameters and capabilities of an IRE. We also show design tradeoffs generated by the systems code IBEAM.

Transverse beam combining is a cost-saving option employed in many designs for induction linac heavy ion fusion drivers. The resultant transverse emittance increase, due predominantly to anharmonic space charge forces, must be kept minimal so that the beam remains focusable at the target. A prototype combining experiment has been built using the MBE-4 experimental apparatus. Four new sources produce up to 6.7 mA Cs+ beams at 200 keV. The ion sources are angled toward each other so that the beams converge. Focusing upstream of the merge consists of four quadrupoles and a final combined-function element (quadrupole and dipole). All lattice elements are electrostatic. Owing to the small distance between beams at the last element (about 3–4 mm), the electrodes here are a cage of small rods, each at different voltage. The beams emerge into the 30-period transport lattice of MBE-4 where emittance growth due to merging, as well as the subsequent evolution of the distribution function, can be diagnosed. The combiner design, simulation predictions and preliminary results from the experiment are presented.

The Heavy Ion Fusion Virtual National Laboratory High Current Experiment (HCX) is exploring transport issues such as dynamic aperture, effects of quadrupole rotation, and the effects on the beam of nonideal distribution function, mismatch, and electrons, using one driver-scale 0.2 μC/m, 2–10 μs coasting K+ beam. Two- and three-dimensional simulations are being done, using the particle-in-cell code WARP to study these phenomena. We present results which predict that the dynamic aperture in the electrostatic focusing transport section will be set by particle loss.

The Heavy-Ion Fusion Accelerator Research Program at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory has proposed building a 10 MeV induction linac systems experiment, ILSE, to investigate accelerator physics and beam manipulations which are needed or desirable for an induction linac driver. This paper describes the experiments proposed for ILSE: transverse beam combining, drift compression, bending of space-charge-dominated beams, final focus, recirculation, and some studies of beam propagation in the environment of the reactor chamber.

We present recent advances in the modeling of beam- electron-cloud dynamics, including surface effects such as secondary electron emission, gas desorption, etc, and volumetric effects such as ionization of residual gas and charge-exchange reactions. Simulations for the HCX facility with the code WARP/POSINST will be described and their validity demonstrated by benchmarks against measurements. The code models a wide range of physical processes and uses a number of novel techniques, including a large-timestep electron mover that smoothly interpolates between direct orbit calculation and guiding-center drift equations, and a new computational technique, based on a Lorentz transformation to a moving frame, that allows the cost of a fully 3D simulation to be reduced to that of a quasi-static approximation.

The Fermilab main injector (MI) is being considered for an upgrade as part of the high intensity neutrino source (HINS) effort. This upgrade will involve a significant increasing of the bunch intensity relative to its present value. Such an increase will place the MI in a regime in which electron-cloud effects are expected to become important. We have used the electrostatic particle-in-cell code WARP, recently augmented with new modeling capabilities and simulation techniques, to study the dynamics of beam-electron cloud interaction. This work in progress involves a systematic assessment of beam instabilities due to the presence of electron clouds.

Electron clouds limit the performance of many major accelerators and storage rings. Significant quantities of electrons result when halo ions are lost to beam tubes, generating gas which can be ionized and ion-induced electrons that can multiply and accumulate, causing degradation or loss of the ion beam. In order to understand the physical mechanisms of ion-induced electron production, experiments studied the impact of 50 to 400 keV K{sup +} ions on stainless steel surfaces near grazing incidence, using the 500 kV Ion Source Test Stand (STS-500) at LLNL. The experimental electron yield scales with the electronic component (dE{sub e}/dx) of the stopping power and its angular dependence does not follow l/cos({theta}). A theoretical model is developed, using TRIM code to evaluate dE{sub e}/dx at several depths in the target, to estimate the electron yield, which is compared with the experimental results. The experiment extends the range of energy from previous works and the model reproduces the angular dependence and magnitude of the electron yield.

High current and low emittance are principal requirements for heavy-ion injection into a linac driver for inertial fusion energy. An electrostatic quadrupole injector is capable of providing these high charge density and low emittance beams. We have modified the existing 2-MV injector to reduce beam emittance and to double the pulse length. We characterize the beam delivered by the modified injector to the High Current Transport Experiment and the effects of finite rise time of the extraction voltage pulse in the diode on the beam head. We demonstrate techniques for mitigating aberrations and reducing beam emittance growth in the injector.

In experiments exploring the dynamics of intense beams for Heavy Ion Fusion, detailed 2D projections of the beam's 4D transverse particle distribution function f (x, y, x' /spl equiv/ p/sub x//p/sub z/, y' /spl equiv/ p/sub y//p/sub z/) are obtained at a sequence of stations, using moving slits and Faraday cups. These projections do not uniquely specify the 4D distribution, so we use maximum-entropy Monte-Carlo techniques to complete the specification and tomographically "synthesize" an approximation to f. Our initial studies used simulated beam data from a self-consistent 2D simulation of the High Current Experiment (HCX) at LBNL. Runs initiated using a simple "semi-Gaussian" model distribution failed to exhibit an emittance evolution similar to that of the reference case. Initial distributions synthesized from the (simulated) slit scan data yielded much better agreement. We have begun to launch simulations of HCX with initial conditions synthesized from slit-scan diagnostics. We present here the techniques, initial simulation results, initial analysis of new "optical slit" data yielding projections such as f (x, y, x'), and future plans.

Using a moment formalism, we model beam transport in the muon collider cooling channel. This model contains much of the physics we believe to be relevant to muon cooling such as ionization energy loss and multiple scattering. Space-charge forces are currently neglected but can, in principle, be added to the model. Previously, this model has been shown to closely agree with particle tracking while being significantly less computationally intensive. Presently our simulation is limited to the six-dimensional dynamics of the transverse cooling section. A matrix representation of an emittance exchange section is presented. This formulation of emittance exchange can either be ideal (conserving 6-d emittance) or can include energy loss and heating representative of the effects expected in a realistic emittance exchange section. These elements should give our model sufficient generality to enable the preliminary, yet realistic, design of a complete muon cooling channel.

In ILSE (Induction Linac Systems Experiment), sixteen intense parallel ion beams are to be transversely combined into four by dispersionless double bends. Emittance growth due to electrostatic energy redistribution and to the geometry is evaluated. Most bending elements are electric, and alternate with AG electrostatic quadrupoles similar to those upstream. The final elements are magnetic, combining focusing and 'unbending'. Electrode shapes and pulsed-current arrays (with very small clearances), as well as mechanical and electric features of the combiner, are described. >

Until July of 1992, the maximum length of the Bevalac flattop was 2 seconds, limiting the beam spill to 1.5 seconds. The normal running condition was a 1.5 second flattop, with a 1.0 second beam spill. If we define the duty factor as the spill length (in time) divided by the synchrotron pulse length, that is, the percentage of time the Bevalac can deliver beam to experiments, the duty factor for the 1.5 second flattop ranged from 17% (at full field, i.e., 12575 G) to 25% (low field). The purpose of the Long Flattop Project was to increase the length of the flattop, thus increasing the duty factor of the machine, and its efficiency for experiments. This has been done, with resultant increase in the duty factor and experimental data rate. It is now possible to run with duty factor of about 80% for low fields, falling to about 60% at 10 kG, and 34% at full field. This report documents what was done, and its limitations. It should be noted that increasing the length of the beam spill is only possible if the source can produce more beam per pulse than is usable by the experimenter. Experimenters running atmore » full intensity with a short flattop (1.5 seconds) cannot benefit from a longer flattop. This paper describe the changes that have been made to Bevalac systems to make the long flattop possible, the limits put on the length of the flattop by existing hardware, and the procedure for tuning for the long flattop.« less

Preliminary designs for the next large accelerator experiment envisioned for the Heavy Ion Fusion program, the IRE (Integrated Research Experiment) use an induction linac to accelerate multiple space-charge-dominated ion beams to an energy of several hundred MeV, and focus them at a target. This paper examines the effect of beam and quadrupole misalignments on beam emittance in the IRE. The dependence of the centroid orbit on the scaling of focusing parameters with z is analyzed. PIC simulations including misalignment give acceptable emittance growth for present IRE designs.

The status of the research on muon colliders is discussed and plans are outlined for future theoretical and experimental studies. Besides continued work on the parameters of a 3-4 and 0.5 TeV center-of-mass (CoM) energy collider, many studies are now concentrating on a machine near 0.1 TeV (CoM) that could be a factory for the s-channel production of Higgs particles. We discuss the research on the various components in such muon colliders, starting from the proton accelerator needed to generate pions from a heavy-Z target and proceeding through the phase rotation and decay ($��\to ����_��$) channel, muon cooling, acceleration, storage in a collider ring and the collider detector. We also present theoretical and experimental R & D plans for the next several years that should lead to a better understanding of the design and feasibility issues for all of the components. The Heavy Ion Fusion Virtual National Laboratory is developing the intense ion beams needed to drive matter to the High Energy Density regimes required for Inertial Fusion Energy and other applications. An interim goal is a facility for Warm Dense Matter studies, wherein a target is heated volumetrically without being shocked, so that well-defined states of matter at 1 to 10 eV are generated within a diagnosable region. In the approach we are pursuing, low to medium mass ions with energies just above the Bragg peak are directed onto thin target “foils,” which may in fact be foams with mean densities 1% to 10% of solid. This approach complements that being pursued at GSI Darmstadt, wherein high-energy ion beams deposit a small fraction of their energy in a cylindrical target. We present the beam requirements for Warm Dense Matter experiments. We discuss neutralized drift compression and final focus experiments and modeling. We describe suitable accelerator architectures based on Drift-Tube Linac, RF, single-gap, Ionization-Front Accelerator, and Pulse-Line Ion Accelerator concepts. The last of these is being pursued experimentally. Finally, we discuss plans toward a user facility for target experiments.
