Conducting polymers (CPs) with high conductivity and solution processability have made great advances since the pioneering work on doped polyacetylenesup1-3/sup, thus creating the new field of 'organic synthetic metals,sup4/sup. Various high-performance CPs have been realized, which enable the applications of several organic electronic devicessup5,6/sup. Nevertheless, most CPs exhibit hole-dominant (p-type) transport behavioursup7,8/sup, whereas the development of n-type analogues lags far behind and only a few exhibit metallic state, typically limited by low doping efficiency and ambient instability. Here we present a facilely synthesized highly conductive n-type polymer poly(benzodifurandione) (PBFDO). The reaction combines oxidative polymerization and in situ reductive n-doping, greatly increasing the doping efficiency, and a doping level of almost 0.9 charges per repeating unit can be achieved. The resultant polymer exhibits a breakthrough conductivity of more than 2,000 S cmsup-1/supwith excellent stability and an unexpected solution processability without extra side chains or surfactants. Furthermore, detailed investigations on PBFDO show coherent charge-transport properties and existence of metallic state. The benchmark performances in electrochemical transistors and thermoelectric generators are further demonstrated, thus paving the way for application of the n-type CPs in organic electronics.

Inferring the causal structure of a set of random variables is a crucial problem in many disciplines of science. Over the past two decades, various approaches have been pro- posed for causal discovery from observational data. How- ever, most of the existing methods are designed for either purely discrete or continuous data, which limit their practical usage. In this paper, we target the problem of causal structure learning from observational mixed-type data. Although there are a few methods that are able to handle mixed-type data, they suffer from restrictions, such as linear assumption and poor scalability. To overcome these weaknesses, we formulate the causal mechanisms via mixed structure equation model and prove its identifiability under mild conditions. A novel locally consistent score, named CVMIC, is proposed for causal directed acyclic graph (DAG) structure learning. Moreover, we propose an efficient conditional independence test, named MRCIT, for mixed-type data, which is used in causal skeleton learning and final pruning to further improve the computational efficiency and precision of our model. Experimental results on both synthetic and real-world data demonstrate that our proposed hybrid model outperforms the other state-of-the-art methods. Maintainance of sulfomucin is a key end point in the treatment of diarrhea and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, the mechanisms underlying the microbial sense to sulfomucin are poorly understood, and to date, there are no therapies targeting the secretion and maturation of sulfomucin in IBD. Herein, we biosynthesized poly-β-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) and found that PHB could alleviate inflammation caused by diarrhea and colitis by enhancing the differentiation of sulfomucin. Microbiota transplantation and clearance together demonstrate that PHB promoting sulfomucin is mediated by Lactobacillus johnsonii (L. johnsonii). Further studies revealed that PHB provides a favorable niche for L. johnsonii biofilm formation to resist disturbance and support its growth. L. johnsonii-biofilm alleviates colitis by regulating fucose residues to promote goblet cell differentiation and subsequent sulfomucin maturation. Importantly, PHB alleviates colitis by enhancing sulfomucin secretion and maturation in a L. johnsonii-dependent manner. PHB represents a class of guardians, acting as a safe probiotic-biofilm delivery system that significantly promotes probiotic proliferation. Altogether, this study adds weight to the possible role of probiotics and functional materials in the treatment of intestinal inflammation. The application of PHB and biofilm self-coating L. johnsonii carries high translational potential and may be of clinical relevance.

Triphenyl phosphate (TPHP) is a kind of organophosphorus flame retardants, and its use is increasing annually. However, the toxic effect associated with exposure to it has not been adequately investigated. Therefore, in this study, we determined the toxic dose of TPHP in the economic fish species, Cyprinus carpio. Acute and subacute toxicity tests were conducted, and the enrichment of TPHP in the gills, brain, intestines, and liver were determined by Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, and the response of carp gut microbial community to TPHP stress was determined using 16 S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing. Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have caused widespread concern because of their potential harm to environmental safety and human health. As substitutes for conventional plastics, the toxic effects of short-term degradation products of biodegradable plastics (polylactic acid (PLA) and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA)) on bacteria and their impact on ARGs transfer were the focus of this study. After 60 days of degradation, more secondary nanoplastics were released from the biodegradable plastics PLA and PHA than that from the conventional plastics polystyrene (PS). All kinds of nanoplastics, no matter released from biodegradable plastics or conventional plastics, had no significant toxicity to bacteria. Nanoplastic particles from biodegradable plastics could significantly increase the transfer efficiency of ARGs. Although the amount of secondary nanoplastics produced by PHA microplastics was much higher than that of PLA, the transfer frequency after exposure to PLA was much higher, which may be due to the agglomeration of PHA nanoplastics caused by plastic instability in solution. After exposure to the 60 d PLA nanoplastics, the transfer frequency was the highest, which was approximately 28 times higher than that of control. The biodegradable nanoplastics significantly enhanced the expression of the outer membrane pore protein genes ompA and ompC, which could increase cell membrane permeability. The expression levels of trfAp and trbBp were increased by repressed major global regulatory genes korA, korB, and trbA, which eventually led to an increase in conjugative transfer frequency. This study provides important insights into the evaluation of the environmental and health risks caused by secondary nanoplastics released from biodegradable plastics.

Based on the characteristic of low diarrhea in native Chinese breeds, we introduce the enterotype model for piglets, which is a new perspective to decipher the colonization and the transition of the gut microbiota among various pig breeds. After eliminating environmental influences represented by diet, the microbiota, mainly shaped by host genetics, is focused. Three representative enterotype clusters were identified, which were represented by Bacteroides, Streptococcus, and Lactobacillus. Chinese native breeds were distributed in enterotype 1 (E1) and E3, which collectively drove the diversification and functionality of the microbial community of various Chinese pig breeds. Next, the Lactobacillus reuteri (L. reuteri), which is the representative strain of E3, was specifically isolated in all three enterotypes. The excellent stress-resistance of L. reuteri-E3 not only highlighted the stronger disease resistance of Chinese breeds but also had a great potential to intervene in weaned piglet diseases. Enterotype classification based on host genetics is much more deterministic and predictable, clarifying the driver of the host-microbiome dynamics and constructing the picture of the micro-coevolution of human host genetics with the gut microbiome.

Functional amino acids provide great potential for treating autophagy-related diseases by regulating autophagy. The purpose of the autophagy process is to remove unwanted cellular contents and to recycle nutrients, which is controlled by many factors. Disordered autophagy has been reported to be associated with various diseases, such as cancer, neurodegeneration, aging, and obesity. Autophagy cannot be directly controlled and dynamic amino acid levels are sufficient to regulate autophagy. To date, arginine, leucine, glutamine, and methionine are widely reported functional amino acids that regulate autophagy. As a signal relay station, mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) turns various amino acid signals into autophagy signaling pathways for functional amino acids. Deficiency or supplementation of functional amino acids can immediately regulate autophagy and is associated with autophagy-related disease. This review summarizes the mechanisms currently involved in autophagy and amino acid sensing, diverse signal transduction among functional amino acids and autophagy, and the therapeutic appeal of amino acids to autophagy-related diseases. We aim to provide a comprehensive overview of the mechanisms of amino acid regulation of autophagy and the role of functional amino acids in clinical autophagy-related diseases and to further convert these mechanisms into feasible therapeutic applications.

Molecular fluorophores emitting in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) window with good renal excretion ability are favorable for in vivo bio-imaging and clinical applications. So far, renally excretable fluorophores are still less studied. Understanding the influences of molecular structure on optical properties and renal excretion abilities are vital for fluorophore optimization. Herein, a series of shielding unit-donor-acceptor-donor-shielding unit (S-D-A-D-S) NIR-II molecular fluorophores are designed and synthesized with dialkoxy chains substituted benzene as the S unit. The anchoring positions of dialkoxy chains on benzene are tuned as meso-2,6, para-2,5, or ortho-3,4 to afford three fluorophores: BGM6P, BGP6P and BGO6P, respectively. Experimental and calculation results reveal that alkoxy side chains anchored closer to the conjugated backbone can provide better protection from water molecules and PEG chains, affording higher fluorescence quantum yield (QY) in aqueous solutions. Further, these side chains can enable good encapsulation of backbone, resulting in decreased binding with albumin and improved renal excretion. Thus, fluorophore BGM6P with meso-2,6-dialkoxy chains exhibits the highest quantum yield and fastest renal excretion. This work emphasizes the important roles of side chain patterns on optimizing NIR-II fluorophores with high brightness and renal excretion ability.

The low brominated polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) is ubiquitous in the marine environment. To elucidate the stress response and possible mechanisms underlying BDE-47, the rainbow trout fish Oncorhynchus mykiss were selected and orally fed bait with BDE-47 concentrations of 50 ng/g and 500 ng/g. BDE-47 was found to be mainly accumulated in head kidney and caused lipid peroxidation after prolonged exposure. We studied the detoxification system genes pregnane X receptor (PXR) and downstream genes (cytochrome 3 A, CYP3 A; glutathione S-transferase, GST) and their corresponding enzyme activity and found that the above indicators in the treatment groups increased first and then decreased with time, while the 500 ng/g group showed more significant changes. Further, the antioxidant system gene expression levels of the NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and downstream genes (superoxide dismutase, SOD; catalase, CAT) were found significantly up-regulated with concentration and time. The change in the enzyme activity of SOD and CAT showed the same tendency as that of indicators of detoxifying system. The results showed that BDE-47 can accumulated in head kidney and caused activate and fast increase of genes and enzymes of detoxification and antioxidant system in the short-term and then damage the response systems in longer times. After Pearson correlation analysis, the Integrated Biomarker Response (IBR) Index was established with malondialdehyde (MDA) content; PXR, Nrf2, SOD, and CAT gene expression; and CYP3 A, GST, and CAT enzymatic activity, which were significantly related to BDE-47 bioaccumulation (P 0.5). The IBR value can indicate the ecotoxicological responses of the head kidney to different BDE-47 concentrations exposure, but the high activity of the antioxidant system might obscure the damage of the detoxification system.

Depiction on an energetic chain in terms of assimilation, allocation and consumption as well as the linkage between energetic alteration and physiological process was performed in blue mussel Mytilus edulis coping with tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) based on a 21-day bioassay to shed light on the possible mechanism from energetic perspective. The filtration was hindered along with BDE-47 concentration increment and the influence of digestion was suggested according to the combination of the digestive enzymatic activities’ alteration and digestive gland tissue impairment, both of which decided the energy availability reduction. Energy consumption indicated by the electron transport system activity was firstly inhibited while was greatly increased with BDE-47 increment, and the cellular energy allocation and adenylate pool were decreased simultaneously. An energetic chain was thus depicted: it tended to reduce energy absorption, elevate the energy consumption and decrease the energy metabolism with BDE-47 exposure, and M. edulis adopted the energetic strategy with variation regarding to the stressing level, suggesting as the preference switched from protein utilization to lipid utilization with the concentration increment. A consistence was observed in index of growth and survival with the change of energy allocation, inferring the energetic involvement in sustaining the viability of the mussel.

CT image denoising can be treated as an image-to-image translation task where the goal is to learn the transform between a source domain $X$ (noisy images) and a target domain $Y$ (clean images). Recently, cycle-consistent adversarial denoising network (CCADN) has achieved state-of-the-art results by enforcing cycle-consistent loss without the need of paired training data. Our detailed analysis of CCADN raises a number of interesting questions. For example, if the noise is large leading to significant difference between domain $X$ and domain $Y$, can we bridge $X$ and $Y$ with an intermediate domain $Z$ such that both the denoising process between $X$ and $Z$ and that between $Z$ and $Y$ are easier to learn? As such intermediate domains lead to multiple cycles, how do we best enforce cycle-consistency? Driven by these questions, we propose a multi-cycle-consistent adversarial network (MCCAN) that builds intermediate domains and enforces both local and global cycle-consistency. The global cycle-consistency couples all generators together to model the whole denoising process, while the local cycle-consistency imposes effective supervision on the process between adjacent domains. Summary π-Conjugated molecules with an annulene-within-an-annulene (AWA) super-ring structure have been pursued by chemists for a long time but with limited success. Here, we report the synthesis of two stable cyclopenta-ring-fused oligo( m -phenylene) macrocycles, 8MC-M and 10MC-M , both showing moderate polyradical character. The octaradicaloid 8MC-M exhibits a [24]annulene-within-[32]annulene structure, which is globally aromatic despite the fact that it possesses 4 n π-electrons. Theoretical analyses reveal that the π-electrons in the inner and outer rings follow Baird's rule such that both are triplet biradicals, and overall the molecule is a ground-state spin singlet. The decaradicaloid 10MC-M also possesses a super-aromatic AWA structure with 30 and 40 π-electrons in the inner and outer rings, respectively. However, it has a triplet ground state with a singlet inner ring satisfying Huckel's rule and a triplet outer ring following Baird's rule. Therefore, molecules with a decoupled AWA super-ring structure are eventually attained and also show unusual global aromaticity.

Antibiotic resistance associated with the mcr-1 gene of Gram-negative bacteria, which confers resistance to drugs of last resort and has the potential to spread via plasmids, is one of the most pressing issues facing global health today. Point-of-care testing for the mcr-1 gene is needed to aid in the identification of colistin resistance in the field and to control its horizontal transmission. Here, we report the successful development of an enzyme-free homogenous electrochemical strategy for sensitive detection of the antibiotic resistance gene mcr-1 using the hybridization chain reaction and mcr-1-specific toehold probe. The long double-stranded DNA polymer produced using this strategy could be detected by assessing the diffusion of methylene blue towards the surface of a screen-printed gold electrode. Under optimized conditions, a linear relationship was observed between the variation of peak current and the natural logarithm of the mcr-1 gene concentration in the range of 1 nM to 1 μM with a detection limit of 0.78 nM (S/N = 3). This enzyme-free, isothermal platform is a rapid, portable, disposable, and sensitive method for detection of plasmid-mediated colistin resistance.

Touch sensing has been widely implemented as a main methodology to bridge human and machine interactions. The traditional touch sensing range is 2-D and therefore limits the user experience. To overcome these limitations, we propose a novel 3-D contactless touch sensing called Airtouch system, which improves user experience by remotely detecting single/multi-finger position. A single layer touch panel with triangle-shaped electrodes is proposed to achieve multitouch detection capability as well as manufacturing cost reduction. Moreover, an oscillator-based-capacitive touch sensing circuit is implemented as the sensing hardware with the bootstrapping technique to eliminate the interchannel coupling effects. To further improve the system accuracy, a grouping algorithm is proposed to group the useful channels’ data and filter out hardware noise impact. Finally, improved algorithms are proposed to eliminate the fringing capacitance effect and achieve accurate finger position estimation. EM simulation proved that the proposed algorithm reduced the maximum systematic error by 11 dB in the horizontal position detection. The proposed system consumes 2.3 mW and is fully compatible with existing mobile device environments. A prototype is built to demonstrate that the system can successfully detect finger movement in a vertical direction up to 6 cm and achieve a horizontal resolution up to 0.6 cm at 1 cm finger-height. As a new interface for human and machine interactions, this system offers great potential in finger movement detection and gesture recognition for small-sized electronics and advanced human interactive games for mobile device.

Convolutional neural network (CNN) offers significant accuracy in image detection. To implement image detection using CNN in the Internet of Things (IoT) devices, a streaming hardware accelerator is proposed. The proposed accelerator optimizes the energy efficiency by avoiding unnecessary data movement. With unique filter decomposition technique, the accelerator can support arbitrary convolution window size. In addition, max-pooling function can be computed in parallel with convolution by using separate pooling unit, thus achieving throughput improvement. A prototype accelerator was implemented in TSMC 65-nm technology with a core size of 5 mm2. The accelerator can support major CNNs and achieve 152GOPS peak throughput and 434GOPS/W energy efficiency at 350 mW, making it a promising hardware accelerator for intelligent IoT devices.

This brief discusses an oscillator-based capacitive 3-D touch-sensing circuit for mobile devices. The proposed 3-D touch sensor uses correlated double sampling to achieve a high sensing resolution in the Z-direction and employs bootstrapping circuitry to reduce the mobile screen's interchannel-coupling effects. Additionally, to reduce chip area and assembly, the sensing oscillator is implemented with inverter-based active resonators instead of using either on- or off-chip inductors. The prototyped 3-D touch sensor is fabricated using 65-nm CMOS process technology and consumes an area of 2 mm2, with a 2.3-mW power consumption from a 1-V power supply. Measured together with a 3.4′′ HTC standard mobile screen, the sensor achieves an 11-cm Z-direction sensing range with a 1-cm resolution, demonstrating the potential implementation of 3-D finger position sensing in a mobile device.

Spirulina platensis is a blue-green algae with potential anti-obesity effects. In this study, the anti-obesity effects of whole Spirulina platensis (WSP), Spirulina platensis protein (SPP) and Spirulina platensis protein hydrolysate (SPPH) were compared in high-fat diet fed mice, and the potential acting mechanism of SPPH was also investigated. Totally, SPPH exhibited good anti-obesity effects (reducing 39.8%±9.7% of body weight), lowering 23.8%±1.6% of serum glucose, decreasing 20.8%±1.4% of total cholesterol, while positive drug Simvastatin had the corresponding values: 8.3%±4.6%, 24.8%±1.9% and -2.1%±0.2%, respectively. Subsequently, PCR array was used to conduct gene expression analysis in brain and liver tissues of SPPH-treated mice, which displayed distinctly different expression pattern. The most markedly changed genes included: Acadm (-34.7 fold), Gcg (2.5 fold), Adra2b (2 fold) and Ghsr (2 fold) in brain; Retn (39 fold), Fabp4 (15.5 fold), Ppard (6 fold) and Slc27a1 (5.4 fold) in liver. Further network analysis demonstrated that the significantly expressed genes in brain and liver tissues were mapped into an interacting network, suggesting a modulatory effect on brain-liver axis, major pathways were involved in the axis: PPAR, adipocytokine, AMPK, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and MAPK. This study showed that Spirulina platensis protein hydrolysate possessed anti-obesity effect in mice.

Surface protein patterns of tumor-derived exosomes could be promising noninvasive diagnostic biomarkers for liquid biopsy. However, a convenient and cost-effective platform for exosomal protein profiling is still lacking. Herein, a facile fluorescent aptasensor is developed to assess exosomal tumor-associated proteins, combining aptamers, aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens), and graphene oxide (GO) as recognition elements, fluorescent dye, and the quencher, respectively. Specifically, numberous TPE-TAs could bind one aptamer and form aggregates rapidly, resulting in an amplified fluorescence signal. In the absence of tumor-derived exosomes, GO absorbs the TPE-TAs/aptamer complex, allowing fluorescence quenching. When the target exosomes are introduced, the aptamer preferentially binds with its target. Thus the TPE-TAs/aptamer complexes detach from GO surface, followed by the appearance of a “turn-on” fluorescent signal. Under the optimized conditions, the linear range of target exosomes is estimated to be 4.07 × 105 to 1.83 × 107 particles/μL (0.68–30.4 pM) with a detection limit of 3.43 × 105 particles/μL (0.57 pM). This strategy demonstrated great performance in differentiating prostate cancer from healthy individuals (AUC: 0.9790). Furthermore, by profiling three tumor-associated protein markers including epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM), and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) on exosomes in a breast tumor cohort, this sensing platform diagnoses breast tumors with high efficiency (AUC: 0.9845) and exhibits a high sensitivity of 97.37% for distinguishing malignant breast cancers, where the stage I cases were detected with 92.31% sensitivity. Therefore, this aptasensor provides a promising strategy to profile tumor-derived exosomal proteins for early diagnosis in liquid biopsy.

The toxic effects of the typically noxious bloom-forming dinoflagellate Karenia mikimotoi were studied using the allelopathic experimental system under controlled laboratory conditions. The potency of intact cell suspensions with whole cells, cell-free culture filtrate in different growth phases, and lysed cells with ultrasonication were compared, and the growth and reproduction of the marine rotifer Brachionus plicatilis were used as endpoints to evaluate toxic differences. The intact cell suspension resulted the most significant growth inhibition, including lethality, on the growth of B. plicatilis (p &lt, 0.05). Lysed culture medium treated with ultrasonication and the cell-free culture filtrates at either the exponential or stationary phase exhibited limited negative impacts compared to the control according to changes in the population growth rate (r) and survival rate (p &gt, 0.05). Reproduction presented a similar tendency to change, and the number of eggs produced per individual, as well as spawning period decreased in the whole cell and lysed cell suspensions. The key parameters in the lift table include the net reproductive rate (R0) and the intrinsic rate of increase (rm), which were more sensitive to treatment and were significantly suppressed compared to that of the control. The addition of the ROS inhibitor N-acetylcysteine (NAC) could not change the growth or reproduction patterns. Moreover, substantial hemolytic toxicity was found in the treatment of the intact cell suspension (p &lt, 0.05), while limited toxicity was found in other treatments compared to that of the control. K. mikimotoi was speculated to secrete allelopathic substances onto the cell surface, and direct cell contact was necessary for allelopathic toxicity in B. plicatilis. Reactive oxygen species (ROS)-independent hemolytic toxicity was assumed to be the explanation for what was observed.

Background Epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) is regarded as a critical event during tumor metastasis. Recent studies have revealed changes and the contributions of proteins in/on exosomes during EMT. Besides proteins, microRNA (miRNA) is another important functional component of exosomes. We hypothesized that the miRNA profile of exosomes may change following EMT and these exosomal miRNAs may in return promote EMT, migration and invasion of cancer cells. Results The small RNA profile of exosomes was altered following EMT. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis revealed that the specific miRNAs of M-exosomes have the potential to drive signal transduction networks in EMT and cancer progression. Co-culture experiments confirmed that M-exosomes can enter epithelial cells and promote migration, invasion and expression of mesenchymal markers in the recipient cells. Conclusion Our results reveal changes in the function and miRNA profile of exosomes upon EMT. M-exosomes can promote transfer of the malignant (mesenchymal) phenotype to epithelial recipient cells. Further, the miRNAs specifically expressed in M-exosomes are associated with EMT and metastasis, and may serve as new biomarkers for EMT-like processes in lung cancer. The widely adoption of Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) causes an explosive growth of the medical and clinical data. It makes the medical search technologies become critical to find useful patient information in the large medical dataset. However, the high quality medical search is a challenging task, in particular due to the inherent complexity and ambiguity of medical terminology. In this paper, by exploiting the uncertainty in ambiguous medical queries, we propose a novel semantic-based approach to achieve the diversity-aware retrieval of EMRs, i.e., both the relevance and novelty are considered for EMR ranking. With the support of medical domain ontologies, we first mine all the potential semantics (concepts and relations between them) from a user query and consume them to model the multiple query aspects. Then, we propose a novel diversification strategy, which considers not only the aspect importance but also the aspect similarity, to perform the diversity-aware EMR ranking. A real-world pilot study, which utilizes the proposed medical search approach to improve the second use of the EMRs, is reported. We believe that our experience can serve as an important reference for the development of similar applications in a medical data utilization and sharing environment.

Modern computing system applications or workloads can bring significant non-uniform temperature gradient on-chip, and hence can cause significant temperature uncertainty during clock-tree synthesis. Existing designs of clock-trees have to assume a given time-invariant worst-case temperature map but cannot deal with a set of temperature maps under a set of workloads. For robust clock-tree synthesis considering temperature uncertainty, this paper presents a new problem formulation: Stochastic PErturbation based Clock Optimization (SPECO). In SPECO algorithm, one nominal clock-tree is pre-synthesized with determined merging points. The impact from the stochastic temperature variation is modeled by perturbation (or small physical displacement) of merging points to offset the induced skews. Because the implementation cost is reduced but the design complexity is increased, the determination of optimal positions of perturbed merging points requires a computationally efficient algorithm. In this paper, one Non-Monte-Carlo (NMC) method is deployed to generate skew and skew variance by one-time analysis when a set of stochastic temperature maps is already provided. Moreover, one principal temperature–map analysis is developed to reduce the design complexity by clustering correlated merging points based on the subspace of the correlation matrix. As a result, the new merging points can be efficiently determined level by level with both skew and its variance reduced. The experimental results show that our SPECO algorithm can effectively reduce the clock-skew and its variance under a number of workloads with minimized wire-length overhead and computational cost. This paper solves the variation-aware decoupling capacitance (decap) budgeting problem. Unlike previous works which only consider worst case design, for the first time, we consider the input of both process variation and operation variation for decap budgeting. A novel stochastic current model is proposed that efficiently and accurately captures temporal correlation between clock cycles, logic-induced correlation between ports, and current variation due to process variation with spatial correlation. An iterative alternative programming algorithm that is applicable to a variety of current models is then developed. Compared with the baseline model which assumes maximum current peaks at all ports, the model considering temporal correlation reduces noise by up to 5times, and the model considering both temporal and logic-induced correlations reduces noise by up to 17times. Compared with using deterministic process parameters, considering process variation (in particular Leff variation) reduces the mean noise by up to 4times and 3sigma noise by up to 13times when both applying the current model with temporal and logic-induced correlations. Note that stochastic optimization has been used mainly for process variation in the literature, but this paper convincingly demonstrate that stochastic optimization considering operation variation is effective to reduce overdesign introduced by worst case design for power integrity. Such stochastic optimization has a wide scope of applications to design problems. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first in-depth study on decap insertion for power network design considering current correlations including process variation.

A simple, clean method of steam etching carbon nanotubes is reported for the synthesis of graphene nanoribbons. The chemical mechanism of carbon nanotube unzipping is also discussed. As an anode catalyst, as-prepared graphene nanoribbons combined with Pt exhibit quite a high catalytic activity for ethanol electro-oxidation in fuel cells.

Due to the novel fluid optics, unique image processing challenges are presented by the fluidic lens camera system. Developed for surgical applications, unique properties, such as no moving parts while zooming and better miniaturization than traditional glass optics, are advantages of the fluid lens. Despite these abilities, sharp color planes and blurred color planes are created by the nonuniform reaction of the liquid lens to different color wavelengths. Severe axial color aberrations are caused by this reaction. In order to deblur color images without estimating a point spread function, a contourlet filter bank system is proposed. Information from sharp color planes is used by this multiband deblurring method to improve blurred color planes. Compared to traditional Lucy-Richardson and Wiener deconvolution algorithms, significantly improved sharpness and reduced ghosting artifacts are produced by a previous wavelet-based method. Directional filtering is used by the proposed contourlet-based system to adjust to the contours of the image. An image is produced by the proposed method which has a similar level of sharpness to the previous wavelet-based method and has fewer ghosting artifacts. Conditions for when this algorithm will reduce the mean squared error are analyzed. While improving the blue color plane by using information from the green color plane is the primary focus of this paper, these methods could be adjusted to improve the red color plane. Many multiband systems such as global mapping, infrared imaging, and computer assisted surgery are natural extensions of this work. This information sharing algorithm is beneficial to any image set with high edge correlation. Improved results in the areas of deblurring, noise reduction, and resolution enhancement can be produced by the proposed algorithm.

Temperature variation in microprocessors is a workload dependent problem. In such a design, the clock skew should be minimized with respect to temperature variation. Existing work has studied clock tree embedding perturbation considering time variant temperature variation. There is no existing method that can reduce skew variation. This paper develops an efficient yet effective simultaneous hotspot avoid embedding and thermal aware routing (TMST) method, where hotspot embedding avoid tree topology located in area with high temperature possibility and thermal aware routing reduce skew in tree path with more smooth temperature area. With a thermally tolerable tree structure, our method can reduce not only delay skew but also skew variation (skew violation range). Compared with existing temperature-aware clock tree method, our TMST solution reduces skew variation by 2X compared with the greedy-DME (GDME) method of Edahiro and existing thermal aware clock synthesis TACO and PECO. With the scale from 100 down to 1 temperature maps, our TMST also guarantees the smallest wire length overflow. TMST reduces the worst case skew up to 4X than PECO and 5X than TACO.

In this work we present a method for accurate estimation of temperature at various locations on a chip considering the inaccuracies in thermal sensor readings due to limitations mainly due to thermal sensor placement and sensor noise. This technique enables accurate estimation of temperature at different locations on the chip with only a limited number of sensors in an efficient way. We utilize Kalman filter (KF) for temperature estimation and for elimination of sensing inaccuracies as well. The computational complexity is reduced by using steady state Kalman filter during normal operation of the chip and reducing the order of the thermal model by a projection based model order reduction method. Our experimental results show that this technique typically reduces the standard deviation and maximum value of temperature estimation errors by about an order of magnitude.
