We demonstrate, for the first time, that a quantum flux parametron (QFP) is capable of acting as both isolator and amplifier in the readout circuit of a capacitively shunted flux qubit (CSFQ). By treating the QFP like a tunable coupler and biasing it such that the coupling is off, we show that $T_1$ of the CSFQ is not impacted by Purcell loss from its low-Q readout resonator ($Q_e = 760$) despite being detuned by only $40$ MHz. When annealed, the QFP amplifies the qubit's persistent current signal such that it generates a flux qubit-state-dependent frequency shift of $85$ MHz in the readout resonator, which is over $9$ times its linewidth. The device is shown to read out a flux qubit in the persistent current basis with fidelities surpassing $98.6\%$ with only $80$ ns integration, and reaches fidelities of $99.6\%$ when integrated for $1$ $\mu$s. We study charge transport through a floating mesoscopic superconductor coupled to counterpropagating fractional quantum Hall edges at filling fraction $\nu=2/3$. We consider a superconducting island with finite charging energy and investigate its effect on transport through the device. We calculate conductance through such a system as a function of temperature and gate voltage applied to the superconducting island. We show that transport is strongly affected by the presence of parafermionic zero modes, leading at zero temperature to a zero-bias conductance quantized in units of $\nu e^2/h$ independent of the applied gate voltage.

Spin-orbit coupled semiconducting nanowires with proximity-induced superconductivity are expected to host Majorana zero modes at their endpoints when a sufficiently strong magnetic field is applied. The resulting phase would be a one-dimensional topological superconductor. However, while a variety of experiments have been performed observing a zero bias conductance peak (suggestive of Majorana zero modes), the topological nature of these physical systems is still a subject of debate. Here we suggest a quantitative test of the degree to which a system displaying a zero bias peak may be considered topological. The experiment is similar to previous measurements of conductance, but is performed with the aid of a quantum dot at the wire's end. Given recent progress in the realization of Majorana zero modes in semiconducting nanowires with proximity-induced superconductivity, a crucial next step is to attempt an experimental demonstration of the predicted braiding statistics associated with the Majorana mode. Such a demonstration should, in principle, confirm that observed zero-bias anomalies are indeed indicative of the presence of anyonic Majorana zero modes. Moreover, such a demonstration would be a breakthrough at the level of fundamental physics: the first clear demonstration of a non-Abelian excitation. It is therefore important to clarify the expected signals of Majorana physics in the braiding context, and to differentiate these signals from those that might also arise in non-topological variants of the same system. A definitive and critical distinction between signals expected in topological (i.e. anyonic) and non-topological (i.e. trivial) situations is therefore essential for future progress in the field. In this manuscript, we carefully examine the expected signals of braiding and fusion experiments in topological and non-topological variants of the experimental nanowire systems in which Majoranas are predicted to occur. We point out situations where `trivial' and `anyonic' signatures may be similar experimentally, necessitating a certain level of caution in the interpretation of various proposed fusion and braiding experiments. The Gottesman-Knill theorem holds that operations from the Clifford group, when combined with preparation and detection of qubit states in the computational basis, are insufficient for universal quantum computation. Indeed, any measurement results in such a system could be reproduced within a local hidden variable theory, so that there is no need for a quantum mechanical explanation and therefore no possibility of quantum speedup. Unfortunately, Clifford operations are precisely the ones available through braiding and measurement in systems supporting non-Abelian Majorana zero modes, which are otherwise an excellent candidate for topologically protected quantum computation. In order to move beyond the classically simulable subspace, an additional phase gate is required. This phase gate allows the system to violate the Bell-like CHSH inequality that would constrain a local hidden variable theory. In this article, we both demonstrate the procedure for measuring Bell violations in Majorana systems and introduce a new type of phase gate for the already existing semiconductor-based Majorana wire systems. We conclude with an experimentally feasible schematic combining the two, which should potentially lead to the demonstration of Bell violation in a Majorana experiment in the near future. In this study, we examine effective field theories of superconducting phases with topological order, making connection to proposed realizations of exotic topological phases(including those hosting Ising and Fibonacci anyons) in superconductor-quantum Hall heterostructures. Our effective field theories for the non-Abelian superconducting states are non-Abelian Chern-Simons theories in which the condensation of vortex-quasiparticle composites lead to the associated Abelian quantum Hall states. This Chern-Simons-Higgs condensation process is dual to the emergence of superconducting non-Abelian topological phases in coupled chain constructions. In such transitions, the chiral central charge of the system generally changes, so they fall outside the description of bosonic condensation transitions put forth by Bais and Slingerland (though the two approaches agree when the described transitions coincide). Our condensation process may be generalized to Chern-Simons theories based on arbitrary Lie groups, always describing a transition from a Lie Algebra to its Cartan subalgebra. We include several instructive examples of such transitions.

We show that the $\nu=8$ integer quantum Hall state can support Majorana zero modes at domain walls between its two different stable chiral edge phases without superconductivity. This is due to the existence of an edge phase that does not support gapless fermionic excitations; all gapless excitations are bosonic in this edge phase. Majorana fermion zero modes occur at a domain wall between this edge phase and the more conventional one that does support gapless fermions. Remarkably, due to the chirality of the system, the topological degeneracy of these zero modes has exponential protection, as a function of the relevant length scales, in spite of the presence of gapless excitations, including gapless fermions. These results are compatible with charge conservation, but do not require it. Exotic topologically protected zero modes with parafermionic statistics (also called fractionalized Majorana modes) have been proposed to emerge in devices fabricated from a fractional quantum Hall system and a superconductor. The fractionalized statistics of these modes takes them an important step beyond the simplest non-Abelian anyons, Majorana fermions. Building on recent advances towards the realization of fractional quantum Hall states of bosonic ultracold atoms, we propose a realization of parafermions in a system consisting of Bose-Einstein-condensate trenches within a bosonic fractional quantum Hall state. We show that parafermionic zero modes emerge at the endpoints of the trenches and give rise to a topologically protected degeneracy. We also discuss methods for preparing and detecting these modes.

Recent concrete proposals suggest it is possible to engineer a two-dimensional bulk phase supporting non-Abelian Fibonacci anyons out of Abelian fractional quantum Hall systems. The low-energy degrees of freedom of such setups can be modeled as $\mathbb{Z}_3$ parafermions "hopping" on a two-dimensional lattice. We use the density matrix renormalization group to study a model of this type interpolating between the decoupled-chain, triangular-lattice, and square-lattice limits. The results show clear evidence of the Fibonacci phase over a wide region of the phase diagram, most notably including the isotropic triangular lattice point. We also study the broader phase diagram of this model and show that elsewhere it supports an Abelian state with semionic excitations., Comment: 19 pages, 22 figures

Finding the precise correspondence between lattice operators and the continuum fields that describe their long-distance properties is a largely open problem for strongly interacting critical points. Here we solve this problem essentially completely in the case of the three-state Potts model, which exhibits a phase transition described by a strongly interacting 'parafermion' conformal field theory. Using symmetry arguments, insights from integrability, and extensive simulations, we construct lattice analogues of nearly all the relevant and marginal physical fields governing this transition. This construction includes chiral fields such as the parafermion. Along the way we also clarify the structure of operator product expansions between order and disorder fields, which we confirm numerically. Our results both suggest a systematic methodology for attacking non-free field theories on the lattice and find broader applications in the pursuit of exotic topologically ordered phases of matter., Comment: 27 pages, 4 figures; v2 added references

Heterostructures formed by quantum Hall systems and superconductors have recently been shown to support widely coveted Majorana fermion zero-modes and still more exotic `parafermionic' generalizations. Here we establish that probing such zero-modes using quantum Hall edge states yields non-local transport signatures that pave the way towards a variety of novel circuit elements. In particular, we demonstrate quite generally that at low energies the zero-modes convert chirally moving quasiparticles into oppositely charged quasiholes propagating in the same direction---that is, they swap the sign of the chiral edge currents. One may then construct new and potentially useful circuit elements using this `perfect Andreev conversion' process, including superconducting current and voltage mirrors as well as transistors for fractional charge currents. Non-Abelian anyons promise to reveal spectacular features of quantum mechanics that could ultimately provide the foundation for a decoherence-free quantum computer. A key breakthrough in the pursuit of these exotic particles originated from Read and Green's observation that the Moore-Read quantum Hall state and a (relatively simple) two-dimensional p+ip superconductor both support so-called Ising non-Abelian anyons. Here we establish a similar correspondence between the Z_3 Read-Rezayi quantum Hall state and a novel two-dimensional superconductor in which charge-2e Cooper pairs are built from fractionalized quasiparticles. In particular, both phases harbor Fibonacci anyons that---unlike Ising anyons---allow for universal topological quantum computation solely through braiding. Using a variant of Teo and Kane's construction of non-Abelian phases from weakly coupled chains, we provide a blueprint for such a superconductor using Abelian quantum Hall states interlaced with an array of superconducting islands. Fibonacci anyons appear as neutral deconfined particles that lead to a two-fold ground-state degeneracy on a torus. In contrast to a p+ip superconductor, vortices do not yield additional particle types yet depending on non-universal energetics can serve as a trap for Fibonacci anyons. These results imply that one can, in principle, combine well-understood and widely available phases of matter to realize non-Abelian anyons with universal braid statistics. Non-Abelian anyons--particles whose exchange noncommutatively transforms a system's quantum state--are widely sought for the exotic fundamental physics they harbor as well as for quantum computing applications. There now exist numerous blueprints for stabilizing the simplest type of non-Abelian anyon, defects binding Majorana modes, by judiciously interfacing widely available materials. Following this line of attack, we introduce a device fabricated from conventional fractional quantum Hall states and s-wave superconductors that supports exotic non-Abelian anyons that bind `parafermions', which can be viewed as fractionalized Majorana fermions. We show that these modes can be experimentally identified (and distinguished from Majoranas) using Josephson measurements. We also provide a practical recipe for braiding parafermions and show that they give rise to non-Abelian statistics. Interestingly, braiding in our setup produces a richer set of topologically protected qubit operations when compared to the Majorana case. We investigate the proposed experimental setup for measuring the topological charge in a an Ising anyon system by means of Fabry-P\'erot interferometry with a chiral edge state. We show that such an interferometer has the unintended but not necessarily unwelcome effect of stabilizing the state of the system being measured (i.e., a topological qubit). We show further that interactions between the edge mode and the localized bulk quasiparticles can have the effect of polarizing the qubit, stabilizing its state. We discuss the these results in the context of recent interferometer experiments in the 5/2 fractional quantum Hall state, where the first of these effects is small, but the second may be relevant to the observed phenomena., Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures. Heterostructures of spin-orbit coupled materials with s-wave superconductors are thought to be capable of supporting zero-energy Majorana bound states. Such excitations are known to obey non-Abelian statistics in two dimensions, and are thus relevant to topological quantum computation (TQC). In a one-dimensional system, Majorana states are localized to phase boundaries. In order to bypass the constraints of one-dimension, a wire network may be created, allowing the exchange of Majoranas by way of junctions in the network. Alicea et al. have proposed such a network as a platform for TQC, showing that the Majorana bound states obey non-Abelian exchange statistics even in quasi-one-dimensional systems. Here we show that the particular realization of non- Abelian statistics produced in a Majorana wire network is highly dependent on the local properties of individual wire junctions. For a simply connected network, the possible realizations can be characterized by the chirality of individual junctions. There is in general no requirement for junction chiralities to remain consistent across a wire network. We show how the chiralities of different junctions may be compared experimentally and discuss the implications for TQC in Majorana wire networks., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, some additional discussion. Recent proposals using heterostructures of superconducting and either topologically insulating or semiconducting layers have been put forth as possible platforms for topological quantum computation. These systems are predicted to contain Ising anyons and share the feature of having only neutral edge excitations. In this note, we show that these proposals can be combined with the recently proposed "sack geometry" for implementation of a phase gate in order to conduct robust universal quantum computation. In addition, we propose a general method for adjusting edge tunneling rates in such systems, which is necessary for the control of interferometric devices. The error rate for the phase gate in neutral Ising systems is parametrically smaller than for a similar geometry in which the edge modes carry charge: it goes as $T^3$ rather than $T$ at low temperatures. Ising-type non-Abelian anyons are likely to occur in a number of physical systems, including quantum Hall systems, where recent experiments support their existence. In general, non-Abelian anyons may be utilized to provide a topologically error-protected medium for quantum information processing. However, the topologically protected operations that may be obtained by braiding and measuring topological charge of Ising anyons are precisely the Clifford gates, which are not computationally universal. The Clifford gate set can be made universal by supplementing it with single-qubit pi/8-phase gates. We propose a method of implementing arbitrary single qubit phase gates for Ising anyons by running a current of anyons with interfering paths around computational anyons.
