O modelo inercial unidimensional de propagação de vazão, formulado através de uma solução explícita, possui resultados comparáveis aos modelos que consideram as equações completas de Saint-Venant. A principal vantagem é a simplicidade na formulação com bons resultados. No entanto, o modelo inercial está restrito à um passo de tempo pequeno para evitar instabilidade numérica. Este trabalho propõe seis esquemas numéricos que modifcam o modelo inercial unidimensional buscando aumentar a estabilidade numérica da solução. O desempenho dos esquemas numéricos propostos foi comparado em quatro situações de declividade do rio (normal, baixa, alta e muito alta) e em duas situações onde o rio está sujeito ao efeito de jusante (remanso e maré). O modelo hidrodinâmico HEC-RAS foi utilizado para validação das soluções. Os resultados são discutidos em termos de estabilidade, vazão de pico, tempo de processamento, erro de conservação de volume e raiz do erro médio quadrático da vazão (Root Mean Square Error – RMSE). De forma geral os esquemas mostraram melhora relativa a cada tipo de aplicação. Em particular, o esquema numérico aqui denominado Prog Q(k+1)xQ(k+1) se destacou apresentando vantagens com maior estabilidade numérica em relação ao esquema original. Porém este esquema não foi bem sucedido na situação de simulação com maré. Além disso, observou-se que a inclusão do cálculo do raio hidráulico sem simplifcação nos esquemas numéricos melhorou os resultados sem aumentar o tempo computacional. The one-dimensional flow routing inertial model, formulated as an explicit solution, has advantages over other explicit models used in hydrological models that simplify the Saint-Venant equations. The main advantage is a simple formulation with good results. However, the inertial model is restricted to a small time step to avoid numerical instability. This paper proposes six numerical schemes that modify the one-dimensional inertial model in order to increase the numerical stability of the solution. The proposed numerical schemes were compared to the original scheme in four situations of river’s slope (normal, low, high and very high) and in two situations where the river is subject to downstream effects (dam backwater and tides). The results are discussed in terms of stability, peak flow, processing time, volume conservation error and RMSE (Root Mean Square Error). In general, the schemes showed improvement relative to each type of application. In particular, the numerical scheme here called Prog Q(k+1)xQ(k+1) stood out presenting advantages with greater numerical stability in relation to the original scheme. However, this scheme was not successful in the tide simulation situation. In addition, it was observed that the inclusion of the hydraulic radius calculation without simplification in the numerical schemes improved the results without increasing the computational time.

System for hydrological forecasting and alert running in an operational way are important tools for floods impacts reduction. The present study describes the development and results evaluation of an operational discharge forecasting system of the upper Uruguay River basin, sited in Southern Brazil. Developed system was operated every day to provide experimental forecasts with special interest for Barra Grande and Campos Novos hydroelectric power plants reservoirs inflow, with 10 days in advance. We present results of inflow forecasted for floods occurred between July 2013 to July 2016, the period which the system was operated. Forecasts results by visual and performance metrics analysis showed a good fit with observations in most cases, with possibility of floods occurrence being well predicted with antecedence of 2 to 3 days. Comparing the locations, it was noted that the sub-basin of Campos Novos, being slower in rainfall-runoff transformation, is easier forecasted. The difference in predictability between the two basins can be observed by the coefficient of persistence, which is positive from 12h in Barra Grande and from 24h to Campos Novos. These coefficient values also show the value of the rainfall-runoff modeling for forecast horizons of more than one day in the basins. RESUMO Sistemas operacionais de previsão hidrológica e alerta são ferramentas úteis para a redução de impactos das inundações. Este estudo apresenta o desenvolvimento e uma avaliação dos resultados de um sistema de previsão de vazão operacional para a bacia do alto rio Uruguai, localizada no sul do Brasil. O sistema foi operado diariamente para fornecer previsões experimentais com interesse especial nas afluências dos reservatórios das usinas hidrelétricas de Barra Grande e Campos Novos, com antecedência de 10 dias. Aqui são apresentados resultados das previsões de afluências para as principais cheias ocorridas entre julho de 2013 e julho de 2016, período no qual o sistema foi operado. Os resultados das previsões por análise visuais e de métricas de desempenho mostraram um bom ajuste com observações na maioria dos casos, prevendo a possível ocorrência de inundações com 2 a 3 dias de antecedência. Na comparação entre as duas bacias notou-se que um a sub-bacia de Campos Novos, por ser mais lenta na transformação chuva-vazão, é mais fácil de ter suas vazões previstas. A diferença na previsibilidade entre as duas bacias pode ser observada pelo coeficiente de persistência, que é positivo a partir de 12h em Barra Grande e a partir de 24h para Campos Novos. Estes valores de coeficiente também mostram a importância da transformação chuva-vazão para a previsão de horizontes de mais de um dia nas bacias.

RESUMO A delimitação de bacias hidrográficas, geração da rede de drenagem e determinação de características hidráulicas de um rio de interesse são partes importantes de estudos na área de hidrologia. Atualmente muitas dessas informações são obtidas com o processamento de modelos digitais de elevação (MDEs) em softwares comerciais de SIG, como o ArcGIS e o IDRISI. Por outro lado, pacotes de SIG para uso livre, ou seja, gratuitos e de código aberto, têm aumentado significativamente nos últimos anos, e as vantagens desses pacotes incluem ampla distribuição e customização, desenvolvimento continuado pela comunidade de usuários e atendimento a necessidades específicas. Este trabalho apresenta o pacote livre (open-source) denominado IPH-Hydro Tools, um conjunto de ferramentas acoplado ao software livre MapWindow GIS criado para facilitar a aquisição de informações topológicas em bacias hidrográficas, bem como realização de etapas de pré-processamento em modelos hidrológicos a exemplo do MGB-IPH. Para avaliar a aplicabilidade e o desempenho da ferramenta desenvolvida foram realizados testes específicos, através da comparação dos resultados do IPH-Hydro Tools em relação a outros pacotes de SIG (ArcGIS, IDRISI, WhiteBox) disponíveis para esta finalidade. O IPH-Hydro Tools apresentou qualidade de rede de drenagem geralmente superior aos demais pacotes e menor tempo de processamento necessário para delimitação de bacias, apesar de algumas limitações como incompatibilidade em relação a matrizes muito grandes e dificuldade na representação da rede de drenagem em áreas extensas de mesma cota, a exemplo de reservatórios e rios muito largos. ABSTRACT Watershed delineation, drainage network generation and determination of river hydraulic characteristics are important issues in hydrological sciences. In general, this information can be obtained from Digital Elevation Models (DEM) processing within GIS commercial softwares, such as ArcGIS and IDRISI. On the other hand, the use of open source GIS tools has increased significantly, and their advantages include free distribution, continuous development by user communities and full customization for specific requirements. Herein, we present the IPH-Hydro Tools, an open source tool coupled to MapWindow GIS software designed for watershed topology acquisition, including preprocessing steps in hydrological models such as MGB-IPH. In addition, several tests were carried out assessing the performance and applicability of the developed tool, given by a comparison with available GIS packages (ArcGIS, IDRISI, WhiteBox) for similar purposes. The IPH-Hydro Tools provided satisfactory results on tested applications, allowing for better drainage network and less processing time for catchment delineation. Regarding its limitations, the developed tool was incompatible with huge terrain data and showed some difficulties to represent drainage networks in extensive flat areas, which can occur in reservoirs and large rivers.

International audience; In this study, rating curves (RCs) were determined by applying satellite altimetry to a poorly gauged basin. This study demonstrates the synergistic application of remote sensing and watershed modeling to capture the dynamics and quantity of flow in the Amazon River Basin, respectively. Three major advancements for estimating basin‐scale patterns in river discharge are described. The first advancement is the preservation of the hydrological meanings of the parameters expressed by Manning's equation to obtain a data set containing the elevations of the river beds throughout the basin. The second advancement is the provision of parameter uncertainties and, therefore, the uncertainties in the rated discharge. The third advancement concerns estimating the discharge while considering backwater effects. We analyzed the Amazon Basin using nearly one thousand series that were obtained from ENVISAT and Jason‐2 altimetry for more than 100 tributaries. Discharge values and related uncertainties were obtained from the rain‐discharge MGB‐IPH model. We used a global optimization algorithm based on the Monte Carlo Markov Chain and Bayesian framework to determine the rating curves. The data were randomly allocated into 80% calibration and 20% validation subsets. A comparison with the validation samples produced a Nash‐Sutcliffe efficiency ( urn:x-wiley:00431397:media:wrcr22024:wrcr22024-math-0001) of 0.68. When the MGB discharge uncertainties were less than 5%, the urn:x-wiley:00431397:media:wrcr22024:wrcr22024-math-0002 value increased to 0.81 (mean). A comparison with the in situ discharge resulted in an urn:x-wiley:00431397:media:wrcr22024:wrcr22024-math-0003 value of 0.71 for the validation samples (and 0.77 for calibration). The urn:x-wiley:00431397:media:wrcr22024:wrcr22024-math-0004 values at the mouths of the rivers that experienced backwater effects significantly improved when the mean monthly slope was included in the RC. Our RCs were not mission‐dependent, and the urn:x-wiley:00431397:media:wrcr22024:wrcr22024-math-0005 value was preserved when applying ENVISAT rating curves to Jason‐2 altimetry at crossovers. The cease‐to‐flow parameter of our RCs provided a good proxy for determining river bed elevation. This proxy was validated against Acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) cross sections with an accuracy of more than 90%. Altimetry measurements are routinely delivered within a few days, and this RC data set provides a simple and cost‐effective tool for predicting discharge throughout the basin in nearly real time.

Modelos hidrológicos são capazes de representar processos do ciclo hidrológico através de equações matemáticas. Dentre esses processos, a propagação de vazão nos rios é de grande importância, especialmente em bacias de grande escala. Em geral, o módulo de propagação de vazão implementado nos modelos hidrológicos é simplificado, sendo adotada uma versão da metodologia de onda cinemática, na maior parte dos casos. Apesar disso, modelos que utilizam essas metodologias produzem resultados aceitáveis na maioria das aplicações. Entretanto, bacias com rios de baixa declividade, com trechos sujeitos a remanso, ou com extensas planícies de inundação, podem não ser bem representados por metodologias de propagação simplificadas. Uma alternativa é o uso de modelos hidrodinâmicos para propagação de vazão. Entretanto, esses modelos necessitam de mais dados de entrada e possuem equacionamentos complexos. Uma opção de complexi- dade intermediária que pode ser adotada é utilizar uma aproximação das equações de Saint-Venant que despreza apenas o termo de inércia advectiva na equação dinâmica. Esta aproximação vem sendo chamada de modelo inercial, ou método inercial. Esse artigo apresenta uma proposta de uma nova versão do modelo hidrológico MGB-IPH, em que o módulo de propagação de vazões na rede de drenagem, originalmente baseado no método Muskingum-Cunge, é substituído pelo método inercial. Além disso, o artigo também apresenta uma forma de representar redes de drenagem com ilhas ou laços, e extensas áreas inundáveis. A bacia do rio Araguaia foi escolhida para testar a metodologia, por possuir rios com alta e baixa declividade e regiões de planície de inundação, como a Ilha do Bananal. Os resultados do modelo MGB-IPH com propagação Inercial foram comparados com a propagação por Muskingum-Cunge através de medidas de desempenho entre as vazões calculadas e observadase mapas de inundação. Os resultados mostraram que utilizando o método inercial, o modelo MGB-IPH representa melhor os efeitos de atenuação da onda de cheia do que utilizando o métodoMuskingum-Cunge. Os mapas de inundação calculados pelo modelo MGB-IPH com o método de propagação inercial foram comparados com imagens do sensor MODIS mostrando que é possível representar, em escala regional, grandes regiões inundáveis como a Ilha do Bananal, mesmo sem dados detalhados de seções transversais e de topografia. Hydrological models are capable of representing basin scale processes through mathematic equations. Among them, flow routing is important, especially for large-scale basins. Flow routing methods used in hydrologic models are commonly simplified, and show satisfactory results in most cases. However, low slope rivers, rivers with backwater effects, or rivers with large flood plains cannot be well represented by simplified flow routing methods. An alternative for them is the full Saint-Venant equations model (hydrodynamic model). Nevertheless, this model demands more input data and its equations are more complex. An easier option than the full Saint-Venant equations model is the Inertial model, which ignores the inertial term from the Momentum equation. This paper presents an improvement of the MGB-IPH hydrologic model, where the simplified flow routing method is replaced by the Inertial model. Furthermore, this paper shows a methodology to represent island sand/or bifurcations in rivers. The Araguaia river basin was selected as a case study due to its particular physical characteristics. Results of the MGB-IPH with Inertial flow routing model were compared to conventional MGB-IPH Muskingum-Cunge method results, and to observed flow data. General outcomes show that observed flow data are better represented by the new improved MGB-IPH model. Furthermore, the simulated flood plain areas were visually well represented in comparison with MODIS imagery.

Previsões hidrológicas de curto e médio prazo normalmente estão associadas a muita incerteza, principalmente relacionadas com o uso de informações de previsões meteorológicas. Uma forma de considerar esta incerteza no processo de previsão e de tomada de decisão é o uso de previsões probabilísticas, obtidas na forma de previsões por conjunto (ou por ensemble). Nesta modalidade de previsões geralmente são gerados diversos cenários futuros possíveis, com o objetivo de quantificar as incertezas no processo de geração das previsões. Estudos recentes têm demonstrado benefícios promissores no uso de previsões por conjunto em detrimento de previsões determinísticas. O presente trabalho propõe uma abordagem complementar relacionada com o tema. Primeiramente é feita uma breve introdução sobre como previsões de vazão são utilizadas atualmente no Brasil, e como previsões por conjunto poderiam ser adotadas neste contexto. Em seguida é apresentada a análise dos resultados de um jogo realizado durante o XX Simpósio Brasileiro de Recursos Hídricos em 2013 na cidade de Bento Gonçalves (RS), que contou com a participação do público presente no evento no papel tomadores de decisão utilizando informações de previsão de vazão, usando e não utilizando informações de previsões probabilísticas. Os resultados do jogo apresentaram, de forma geral, que previsões com probabilidades leva- ram na maior parte dos casos a decisões melhores e mais coerentes entre múltiplas pessoas. Acredita-se que este argumento ajude a motivar desenvolvimentos de mais pesquisas e sistemas operacionais de previsão por conjunto no cenário brasileiro. Short and medium term hydrological forecasts are usually associated with large uncertainty, especially concerning the use of information from numerical wea- ther forecasts. One way to consider this uncertainty in the forecasting and decision-making process is the use of probabilistic predictions, obtained as ensemble forecasts. Usually at these kinds of forecasts several possible future scenarios are generated in order to quantify the uncertainties in the process. Recent studies have shown promising benefits on using ensemble forecasts rather than deterministic ones. This paper proposes a complementary approach related to the topic. First a brief introduction to streamflow forecasts current use in Brazil is made, and discussed how ensemble forecasts could be taken in this context. Then we present results of a game held during the XX Brazilian Symposium on Water Resources in 2013 in the city of Bento Gonçalves (RS), which had the public participation at the event playing the whole of decision makers that uses forecast information, using and not using information from probabilistic forecasts. The game results showed, in general, that probabilistic forecasts led in most cases to better and more consistent decisions among multiple persons. We believe that this argument helps to motivate the development of more research and more operational ensemble forecasting systems in the Brazilian scenario.

Na simulação numérica de escoamento, a simplificação da equação dinâmica pode ser útil, tanto em relação à estabilidade da solução numérica quanto ao ganho computacional. Tendo em vista esta preocupação, este trabalho avalia o uso de um modelo obtido ao se desconsiderar o termo advectivo da equação de Saint-Venant, denominado de modelo inercial local, ou simplesmente modelo inercial, na simulação de escoamentos influenciados por fechamentos de compor- tas, com enfoque na onda superficial provocada por estes fechamentos. Os resultados do modelo inercial são comparados com os resultados do modelo HEC -RAS, que utiliza uma solução da equação de Saint-Venant completa, a fim de se verificar no que a simplificação do termo convectivo acarreta. Os resultados obtidos com o modelo inercial se assemelharam aos do modelo HEC-RAS dependendo do tipo de onda formada, da vazão, e da altura do escoamento. Para escoamentos com a mesma vazão e altura, a validade do modelo inercial pode ser identificada utilizando adimensionais que relacionam características da onda com a altura do escoamento. Entretanto, para escoamentos expressivamente diferentes, estes adimensionais não indicaram a validade da simulação pelo modelo inercial, devendo-se analisar o peso dos termos da equação dinâmica. Observa-se que o código do programa com a aproximação inercial possui menos oscilações numéricas, quando se adota uma malha grosseira, do que o código do programa com as equações completas. Com o aumento da declividade do canal não foi identificado se importância do termo advectivo da equação dinâmica é maior ou menor. A partir deste trabalho, acredita-se que os testes realizados para ondas geradas pelo fechamento de comportas podem se estender para ondas superficiais formadas por outras fontes. In a numerical flow simulation, the simplification of partial equations can be useful for numerical solution stability and computational effort. This study evaluates the model obtained from the Saint-Venant equation simplification, which ignores the advective term, called inertial model in flow simulation influen- ced by closing gates, focusing on the surface wave caused by this closure. Inertial model results are compared with HEC-RAS model results, which use full Saint-Venant equation. For different problems, an inertial model can be appropriately used depending on wave type, flow rate and flow height. For similar flows (similar flow rate and height) the simulation validity can be verified by wave steepness, but for different flows, wave steepness should not be used and analysis of dynamic equation terms should be done. It is observed that inertial approximation code has less numerical oscillations that the HEC-RAS code. Channel slope does not indicate if the advective term is or not important. It is thought that waves generated by closing gate tests may be extend to surface waves generated by other sources.

A estimativa de recargas aquíferas é um fator determinante para a gestão sustentável das águas subterrâneas, uma vez que permite a manutenção da quantidade e qualidade da água dos aquíferos. Para a estimativa de recargas aquíferas existem diversos métodos que podem ser empregados e que variam de acordo com as características da área estudada e as escalas a serem trabalhadas. No presente estudo foram avaliadas as estimativas de recarga na Bacia Hidrográfica do Rio Ibicuí utilizando os métodos de Separação de Escoamento de Base e Variação dos Níveis d’Água. Levando em consideração as limitações de escala, os resultados da estimativa de recarga aquífera pelos dois métodos convergiram.

In the present study we investigate the use of medium-range streamflow forecasts in the Doce River basin (Brazil), at the reservoir of Aimorés Hydro Power Plant (HPP). During daily operations this reservoir acts as a “trap” to the sediments that originate from the upstream basin of the Doce River. This motivates a cleaning process called “pass through” to periodically remove the sediments from the reservoir. The “pass through” or “sediments flushing” process consists of a decrease of the reservoir’s water level to a certain flushing level when a determined reservoir inflow threshold is forecasted. Then, the water in the approaching inflow is used to flush the sediments from the reservoir through the spillway and to recover the original reservoir storage. To be triggered, the sediments flushing operation requires an inflow larger than 3000m3/s in a forecast horizon of 7 days. This lead-time of 7 days is far beyond the basin’s concentration time (around 2 days), meaning that the forecasts for the pass through procedure highly depends on Numerical Weather Predictions (NWP) models that generate Quantitative Precipitation Forecasts (QPF). This dependency creates an environment with a high amount of uncertainty to the operator. To support the decision making at Aimorés HPP we developed a fully operational hydrological forecasting system to the basin. The system is capable of generating ensemble streamflow forecasts scenarios when driven by QPF data from meteorological Ensemble Prediction Systems (EPS). This approach allows accounting for uncertainties in the NWP at a decision making level. This system is starting to be used operationally by CEMIG and is the one shown in the present study, including a hindcasting analysis to assess the performance of the system for the specific flushing problem. The QPF data used in the hindcasting study was derived from the TIGGE (THORPEX Interactive Grand Global Ensemble) database. Among all EPS available on TIGGE, three were selected: ECMWF, GEFS, and CPTEC. As a deterministic reference forecast, we adopt the high resolution ECMWF forecast for comparison. The experiment consisted on running retrospective forecasts for a full five-year period. To verify the proposed objectives of the study, we use different metrics to evaluate the forecast: ROC Curves, Exceedance Diagrams, Forecast Convergence Score (FCS). Metrics results enabled to understand the benefits of the hydrological ensemble prediction system as a decision making tool for the HPP operation. The ROC scores indicate that the use of the lower percentiles of the ensemble scenarios issues for a true alarm rate around 0,5 to 0,8 (depending on the model and on the percentile), for the lead time of seven days. While the false alarm rate is between 0 and 0,3. Those rates were better than the ones resulting from the deterministic reference forecast. Exceedance diagrams and forecast convergence scores indicate that the ensemble scenarios provide an early signal about the threshold crossing. Furthermore, the ensemble forecasts are more consistent between two subsequent forecasts in comparison to the deterministic forecast. The assessments results also give more credibility to CEMIG in the realization and communication of flushing operation with the stakeholders involved.

In this work, a first-order upwind and a high-order flux-limiter schemes for solving the advection–diffusion equation on unstructured grids were evaluated. The numerical schemes were implemented as a module of an unstructured two-dimensional depth-averaged circulation model for shallow lakes (IPH-UnTRIM2D), and they were applied to the Guaíba River in Brazil. Their performances were evaluated by comparing mass conservation balance errors for two scenarios of a passive tracer released into the Guaíba River. The circulation model showed good agreement with observed data collected at four water level stations along the Guaíba River, where correlation coefficients achieved values up to 0.93. In addition, volume conservation errors were lower than 1% of the total volume of the Guaíba River. For all scenarios, the higher order flux-limiter scheme has been shown to be less diffusive than a first-order upwind scheme. Accumulated conservation mass balance errors calculated for the flux limiter reached 8%, whereas for a first-order upwind scheme, they were close to 18% over a 15-day period. Although both schemes have presented mass conservation errors, these errors are assumed negligible compared with kinetic processes such as erosion, sedimentation or decay rates.
