Diffusional limitations associated with zeolite microporous systems can be overcome by developing hierarchical zeolites, i.e., materials with a micro- and mesoporous framework. In this work, Y and ZSM-5 zeolites were modified using a surfactant-mediated hydrothermal alkaline method, with NaOH and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). For Y zeolite, after a mild acidic pretreatment, the effect of the NaOH+CTAB treatment time was investigated. For ZSM-5 zeolite, different concentrations of the base and acid solutions were tested in the two-step pretreatment preceding the hydrothermal treatment. The properties of the materials were studied with different physical–chemical techniques. Hierarchical Y zeolites were characterized by 3.3–5 nm pores formed during the alkaline treatment through the structure reconstruction around the surfactant aggregates. The effectiveness of the NaOH+CTAB treatment was highly dependent on the duration. For intermediate treatment times (6–12 h), both smaller and larger mesopores were also obtained. Hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolites showed a disordered mesoporosity, mainly resulting from the pretreatment rather than from the subsequent hydrothermal treatment. High mesoporosity was obtained when the concentration of the pretreating base solution was sufficiently high and that of the acid one was not excessive. Hierarchical materials can be obtained for both zeolite structures, but the pretreatment and treatment conditions must be tailored to the starting zeolite and the desired type of mesoporosity. A series of multicomponent oxide catalysts (CuO/ZnO/MemOn/ZrO2/SiO2, with Me = Mg, Ce, or La) was synthesized through a one-pot soft-template approach and used for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. In the case of the La-containing catalysts, additional samples were prepared with CuO contents in the range 40–60 wt%. The influence of the catalyst composition on the physicochemical properties as well as the effect on the catalytic performance were investigated. The fresh catalysts were characterized in terms of composition, structure, textural properties, dispersion of the oxidic phases, and reducibility. On the reduced samples, structural and acid–base properties were also investigated, as well as specific metal surface area and dispersion of Cu0. After in situ H2-treatment at 250 °C, the catalysts activity was tested in a bench scale plant at 250 °C and 3.0 MPa, using a gas hourly space velocity of 24,000 Ncm3 h−1 gcat−1 and a H2/CO2 molar ratio equal to 3. It was found that the production of methanol is particularly favored by the introduction of La2O3, the highest value of methanol space–time yield (413 mg CH 3 OH h - 1 g cat - 1 ) being obtained on the CuO/ZnO/La2O3/ZrO2/SiO2 catalyst containing 50 wt% of copper oxide. Functionalized aluminosilicate materials were studied as catalysts for the conversion of different cyclic carbonates to the corresponding epoxides by the addition of CO2. Aluminum was incorporated in the mesostructured SBA-15 silica network. Thereafter, functionalization with imidazolium chloride or magnesium oxide was performed on the Al_SBA-15 supports. The isomorphic substitution of Si with Al and the resulting acidity of the supports were investigated via 27Al magic angle spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and NH3 adsorption microcalorimetry. The Al content and the amount of MgO were quantified via inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) analysis. The anchoring of the imidazolium salt was assessed by 29Si and 13C MAS NMR spectroscopy and quantified by combustion chemical analysis. Textural and structural properties of supports and catalysts were studied by N2 physisorption and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The functionalized systems were then tested as catalysts for the conversion of CO2 and epoxides to cyclic carbonates in a batch reactor at 100 or 125 °C, with an initial CO2 pressure (at room temperature) of 25 bar. Whereas the activity of the MgO/xAl_SBA-15 systems was moderate for the conversion of glycidol to the corresponding cyclic carbonate, the Al_SBA-15-supported imidazolium chloride catalysts gave excellent results over different epoxides (conversion of glycidol, epichlorohydrin, and styrene oxide up to 89%, 78%, and 18%, respectively). Reusability tests were also performed. Even when some deactivation from one run to the other was observed, a comparison with the literature showed the Al-containing imidazolium systems to be promising catalysts. The fully heterogeneous nature of the present catalysts, where the inorganic support on which the imidazolium species are immobilized also contains the Lewis acid sites, gives them a further advantage with respect to most of the catalytic systems reported in the literature so far. In this study, CeO2, La2O3, and CeO2-La2O3 mixed oxide catalysts with different Ce/La molar ratios were prepared by the soft template method and characterized by different techniques, including inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, N2 physisorption, thermogravimetric analysis, and Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopies. NH3 and CO2 adsorption microcalorimetry was also used for assessing the acid and base surface properties, respectively. The behavior of the oxides as catalysts for the dimethyl carbonate synthesis by the transesterification of propylene carbonate with methanol, at 160 °C under autogenic pressure, was studied in a stainless-steel batch reactor. The activity of the catalysts was found to increase with an increase in the basic sites density. The formation of dimethyl carbonate was favored on medium-strength and weak basic sites, while it underwent decomposition on the strong ones. Several parasitic reactions occurred during the transformation of propylene carbonate, depending on the basic and acidic features of the catalysts. CO2-derived methanol and dimethyl ether can play a very important role as fuels, energy carriers, and bulk chemicals. Methanol production from CO2 and renewable hydrogen is considered to be one of the most promising pathways to alleviate global warming. In turn, methanol could be subsequently dehydrated into DME; alternatively, one-step CO2 conversion to DME can be obtained by hydrogenation on bifunctional catalysts. In this light, four oxide catalysts with the same Cu and Zn content (Cu/Zn molar ratio = 2) were synthesized by calcining the corresponding CuZnAl LDH systems modified with Zr and/or Ce. The fresh ex-LDH catalysts were characterized in terms of composition, texture, structure, surface acidity and basicity, and reducibility. Structural and acid–base properties were also studied on H2-treated samples, on which specific metal surface area and dispersion of metallic Cu were determined as well. After in situ H2 treatment, the ex-LDH systems were tested as catalysts for the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol at 250 °C and 3.0 MPa. In the same experimental conditions, CO2 conversion into dimethyl ether was studied on bifunctional catalysts obtained by physically mixing the ex-LDH hydrogenation catalysts with acid ferrierite or ZSM-5 zeolites.
