Search

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, a California public university launched the Pandemic Histories Archive Project (PHAP) in collaboration with the library. This online service-learning opportunity empowered undergraduates to describe and reflect on their pandemic experiences and represent their communities by contributing to the library's digital archive. From 2020-2021, nearly 300 undergraduate students completed PHAP's asynchronous online training modules and documented the COVID-19 pandemic and social justice issues by producing materials such as field notes, interviews, photographs, and reflections. According to open-ended surveys, students responded favorably to this novel project, valuing the creative freedom, knowledge, and skills gained through community archiving. This case study summarizes the literature on online and service-learning, presents the pros and cons of each, and offers recommendations for creating a student-centered learning environment. PHAP's teaching approaches, which emphasized student wellness and strengths, can be applied beyond the pandemic in future online, hybrid, and in-person courses.

An active-learning concurrent preparatory general chemistry course was adopted to replace a prerequisite course that lacked effectiveness in improving student outcomes. Our previous study showed that the concurrent course increased final exam performance and retention in a cohort of students. This paper studies the course modality impact of the concurrent preparatory course on student learning and retention. Three modes of instruction (in-person, online synchronous, and asynchronous) were offered for the concurrent preparatory general chemistry course. Significant differences were found in success on the final exam and retention for the first quarter of college-level general chemistry between in-person and online students. While students in the synchronous and asynchronous modalities performed differently in the concurrent preparatory general chemistry course, there were no significant differences in the final exam performance in the main general chemistry course or retention overall.

Fostering equity in undergraduate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs can be accomplished by incorporating learner-centered pedagogies, resulting in the closing of opportunity gaps (defined here as the difference in grades earned by minoritized and non-minoritized students). We assessed STEM courses that exhibit small and large opportunity gaps at a minority-serving, research-intensive university, and evaluated the degree to which their syllabi are learner-centered, according to a previously validated rubric. We specifically chose syllabi as they are often the first interaction students have with a course, establish expectations for course policies and practices, and serve as a proxy for the course environment. We found STEM courses with more learner-centered syllabi had smaller opportunity gaps. The syllabus rubric factor that most correlated with smaller gaps was Power and Control, which reflects Students Role, Outside Resources, and Syllabus Focus. This work highlights the importance of course syllabi as a tool for instructors to create more inclusive classroom environments.

BACKGROUND: Large introductory lecture courses are frequently post-secondary students first formal interaction with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Grade outcomes in these courses are often disparate across student populations, which, in turn, has implications for student retention. This study positions such disparities as a manifestation of systemic inequities along the dimensions of sex, race/ethnicity, income, and first-generation status and investigates the extent to which they are similar across peer institutions. RESULTS: We examined grade outcomes in a selected set of early STEM courses across six large, public, research-intensive universities in the United States over ten years. In this sample of more than 200,000 STEM course enrollments, we find that course grade benefits increase significantly with the number of systemic advantages students possess at all six institutions. The observed trends in academic outcomes versus advantage are strikingly similar across universities despite the fact that we did not control for differences in grading practices, contexts, and instructor and student populations. The findings are concerning given that these courses are often students first post-secondary STEM experiences. CONCLUSIONS: STEM course grades are typically lower than those in other disciplines; students taking them often pay grade penalties. The systemic advantages some student groups experience are correlated with significant reductions in these grade penalties at all six institutions. The consistency of these findings across institutions and courses supports the claim that inequities in STEM education are a systemic problem, driven by factors that go beyond specific courses or individual institutions. Our work provides a basis for the exploration of contexts where inequities are exacerbated or reduced and can be used to advocate for structural change within STEM education. To cultivate more equitable learning environments, we must reckon with how pervasive structural barriers in STEM courses negatively shape the experiences of marginalized students. Abstract Background Tobacco smoking is the leading cause of preventable death and disease worldwide, with over 8 million annual deaths attributed to cigarette smoking. This study investigates the impact of cigarette smoke and heated tobacco products (HTPs) on microglial function, focusing on toxicological profiles, inflammatory responses, and oxidative stress using ISO standard and clinically relevant conditions of exposure. Methods We assessed cell viability, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, lipid peroxidation, mitochondrial function, unfolded protein response, and inflammation in human microglial cells (HMC3) exposed to cigarette smoke, HTP aerosol or nicotine. Results Our findings show that cigarette smoke significantly reduces microglial viability, increases ROS formation, induces lipid peroxidation, and reduces intracellular glutathione levels. Cigarette smoke also alters the expression of genes involved in mitochondrial dynamics and biogenesis, leading to mitochondrial dysfunction. Additionally, cigarette smoke impairs the unfolded protein response, activates the NF-κB pathway, and induces a pro-inflammatory state characterized by increased TNF and IL-18 expression. Furthermore, cigarette smoke causes DNA damage and decreases the expression of the aging marker Klotho β. In contrast, HTP, exhibited a lesser degree of microglial toxicity, with reduced ROS production, lipid peroxidation, and mitochondrial dysfunction compared to conventional cigarettes. Conclusion These results highlight the differential toxicological profile of cigarette smoke and HTP on microglial cells, suggesting a potential harm reduction strategy for neurodegenerative disease for smokers unwilling or unable to quit.

Abstract Background With life expectancy on the rise, there has been an increase in patients with concomitant degenerative hip and spine pathology, defined as hip-spine syndrome (HSS). Patients affected by HSS may require both total hip arthroplasty (THA) and lumbar spinal fusion (LSF), although there is a paucity of data regarding how the sequential timing of these procedures may influence clinical outcomes. This study aims to compare complications and spinopelvic parameters in patients with HSS who underwent either LSF first or THA first. Methods A systematic search of PubMed and Scopus was conducted for randomized and nonrandomized studies investigating complications and spinopelvic parameters in patients with HSS who had undergone THA and LSF. The Methodological Index for Non-Randomized Studies (MINORS) tool was utilized to assess the risk of bias in included studies. Relevant outcomes were pooled for meta-analysis. Results Eleven articles were included in this study. There was a significantly higher THA dislocation rate in patients who had undergone LSF first compared to those who had THA first (OR: 3.17, 95% CI 1.23–8.15, P = 0.02). No significant difference was found in terms of THA aseptic loosening (OR: 0.86; 95% CI 0.32–2.32, p = 0.77) and revision rate (OR: 1.18, 95% CI: 0.53–2.62) between these two groups. Abstract Glioblastoma (GBM) represents an aggressive brain tumor, characterized by intra- and inter-tumoral heterogeneity and therapy resistance, leading to unfavourable prognosis. An increasing number of studies pays attention on the regulation of ferroptosis, an iron-dependent cell death, as a strategy to reverse drug resistance in cancer. However, the debate on whether this strategy may have important implications for the treatment of GBM is still ongoing. In the present study, we used ferric ammonium citrate and erastin to evaluate ferroptosis induction effects on two human GBM cell lines, U-251 MG, with proneural characteristics, and T98-G, with a mesenchymal profile. The response to ferroptosis induction was markedly different between cell lines, indeed T98-G cells showed an enhanced antioxidant defence, with increased glutathione levels, as compared to U-251 MG cells. Moreover, using bioinformatic approaches and analysing publicly available datasets from patients’ biopsies, we found that GBM with a mesenchymal phenotype showed an up-regulation of several genes involved in antioxidant mechanisms as compared to proneural subtype. Thus, our results suggest that GBM subtypes differently respond to ferroptosis induction, emphasizing the significance of further molecular studies on GBM to better discriminate between various tumor subtypes and progressively move towards personalized therapy.

Abstract Purpose Implanted devices used in metastatic spine tumor surgery (MSTS) include pedicle screws, fixation plates, fixation rods, and interbody devices. A material to be used to fabricate any of these devices should possess an array of properties, which include biocompatibility, no toxicity, bioactivity, low wear rate, low to moderate incidence of artifacts during imaging, tensile strength and modulus that are comparable to those of cortical bone, high fatigue strength/long fatigue life, minimal or no negative impact on radiotherapy (RT) planning and delivery, and high capability for fusion to the contiguous bone. The shortcomings of Ti6Al4V alloy for these applications with respect to these desirable properties are well recognized, opening the field for an investigation about novel biomaterials that could replace the current gold standard. Previously published reviews on this topic have exhibited significant shortcomings in the studies they included, such as a small, heterogenous sample size and the lack of a cost-benefit analysis, extremely useful to understand the practical possibility of applying a novel material on a large scale. Therefore, this review aims to collect information about the clinical performance of these biomaterials from the most recent literature, with the objective of deliberating which could potentially be better than titanium in the future, with particular attention to safety, artifact production and radiotherapy planning interference. The significant promise showed by analyzing the clinical performance of these devices warrants further research through prospective studies with a larger sample size also taking into account each aspect of the production and use of such materials. Methods The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were used to improve the reporting of the review. The search was performed from March 2022 to September 2023. Results At the end of the screening process, 20 articles were considered eligible for this study. Polyetheretherketone (PEEK), Carbon-fibre reinforced polyetheretherketone (CFR-PEEK), long carbon fiber reinforced polymer (LCFRP), Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), and carbon screw and rods were used in the included studies. Conclusion CFR-PEEK displays a noninferior safety and efficacy profile to titanium implanted devices. However, it also has other advantages. By decreasing artifact production, it is able to increase detection of local tumor recurrence and decrease radiotherapy dose perturbation, ultimately bettering prognosis for patients necessitating adjuvant treatment. Nonetheless, its drawbacks have not been explored fully and still require further investigation in future studies. This does not exclude the fact that CFR-PEEK could be a valid alternative to titanium in the near future.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common non-melanoma skin cancer. BCCs are categorized into “easy-to-treat” and “difficult-to-treat” groups, with the latter including all BCCs that are challenging to manage due to technical, patient-related, or tumor-related factors, such as locally advanced BCCs. In this report, we describe an 84-year-old patient with an extensive, unilateral BCC. Following a decision by the multidisciplinary skin cancer board, the patient was successfully treated with a daily dose of 200 mg of sonidegib, an inhibitor of the Hedgehog pathway, for eight months, acquiring complete clinical and histopathological remission. No significant side effects were reported. The follow-up period of 24 months has shown no negative results.

Abstract Background Several studies have compared the pros and cons of simultaneous bilateral versus staged bilateral hip and knee replacement but the outcomes of these two surgical options remains a matter of controversy. This study aimed to evaluate demographic features, incidence and hospitalization rates of bilateral one stage total hip and knee arthroplasty in Italy. Methods The Italian Ministry of Health’s National Hospital Discharge Reports (SDO) were used to gather data. This study referred to the adult population (+ 20 years of age) from 2001 to 2015 for hip arthroplasty and from 2001 to 2016 for knee arthroplasty. Results Overall, 1,544 bilateral simultaneous hip replacement were carried out. The incidence rate was 0.21 cases per 100,000 adult Italian residents. Male/female ratio was 1.1. The average days of hospital stay was 11.7 ± 11.8 days. The main primary codified diagnosis was: osteoarthrosis, localized, primary, pelvic region and thigh (ICD code: 715.15). 2,851 bilateral simultaneous knee replacement were carried out. The incidence rate was 0.37 cases per 100,000 adult Italian residents. Male/female ratio was 0.6. The average days of hospital stay was 7.7 ± 5.8 days. The main primary codified diagnosis was: osteoarthrosis, localized, primary, lower leg (ICD code: 715.16). Conclusions The burden of hip and knee osteoarthrosis as a leading cause of bilateral joint replacement is significant in Italy. The national registers’ longitudinal analysis may provide data for establishing international guidelines regarding the appropriate indications for one stage bilateral simultaneous hip or knee replacement versus two stage.

We explored the intricate interplay of biological, social, and psychological factors contributing to substance use disorder (SUD) and co-occurring psychiatric symptoms. Drug misuse is a global concern, with increasing prevalence rates affecting mental well-being and safety. The spectrum of SUD includes polysubstance users, posing challenges for treatment and associated health outcomes. Various psychoactive substances like cannabis, hallucinogens, opioids, and stimulants impact addiction vulnerability, with marijuana being widely used globally. Gender differences in SUD prevalence have narrowed, with women escalating drug consumption rapidly once initiated. Age disparities in substance use highlight regional variations among adolescents. Comorbidities with psychiatric symptoms are common, with mood and anxiety disorders frequently observed. This study aimed to analyze factors influencing SUD development and maintenance to inform prevention strategies and treatment recommendations. By conducting a systematic search of databases, sixty articles were reviewed, revealing diverse methodologies and geographic locations. Biological factors, including neurotransmitter systems like endocannabinoid and dopaminergic systems, play a significant role in addiction. Genetic and neurobiological factors contribute to cannabis addiction susceptibility. Social factors such as childhood experiences and parenting styles influence substance use behaviors. Psychological factors like personality traits and mental health conditions interact with SUD development. Understanding these multifaceted interactions is crucial for designing effective interventions to address the complexities of SUD and co-occurring psychiatric symptoms.

Objective Several studies have advocated for the higher accuracy of transpedicular screw placement under cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) compared to conventional 2-dimensional (2D) fluoroscopy. The superiority of navigation systems in perioperative and postoperative outcomes remains a topic of debate. This study aimed to compare operative time, screw placement time and accuracy, total radiation dose, perioperative and postoperative outcomes in patients who underwent transpedicular screw fixation for degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis (DLS) using intraoperative CBCT navigation versus 2D fluoroscopy. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients affected by single-level DLS who underwent posterior lumbar instrumentation with transpedicular screw fixation using surgical CBCT navigation (NV group) or 2D fluoroscopy-assisted freehand technique (FH group). Demographics, screw placement time and accuracy, operative time, total radiation dose, intraoperative blood loss, screw revision rate, complications, and length of stay (LOS) were assessed. Results The study included a total of 30 patients (NV group: n = 15; FH group: n = 15). The mean screw placement time, operative time, and LOS were significantly reduced in the NV group compared to the FH group (p < 0.05). The total radiation dose was significantly higher in the NV group (p < 0.0001). No significant difference was found in terms of blood loss and postoperative complications. Conclusion This study suggests that intraoperative CBCT-navigated single-level lumbar transpedicular screw fixation is superior in terms of mean screw placement time, operative time, and LOS compared to 2D fluoroscopy, despite a higher intraoperative radiation exposure.

Objective To evaluate the global practice pattern of wound dressing use after lumbar fusion for degenerative conditions. Methods A survey issued by AO Spine Knowledge Forums Deformity and Degenerative was sent out to AO Spine members. The type of postoperative dressing employed, timing of initial dressing removal, and type of subsequent dressing applied were investigated. Differences in the type of surgery and regional distribution of surgeons’ preferences were analyzed. Results Right following surgery, 60.6% utilized a dry dressing, 23.2% a plastic occlusive dressing, 5.7% glue, 6% a combination of glue and polyester mesh, 2.6% a wound vacuum, and 1.2% other dressings. The initial dressing was removed on postoperative day 1 (11.6%), 2 (39.2%), 3 (20.3%), 4 (1.7%), 5 (4.3%), 6 (0.4%), 7 or later (12.5%), or depending on drain removal (9.9%). Following initial dressing removal, 75.9% applied a dry dressing, 17.7% a plastic occlusive dressing, and 1.3% glue, while 12.1% used no dressing. The use of no additional coverage after initial dressing removal was significantly associated with a later dressing change (p < 0.001). Significant differences emerged after comparing dressing management among different AO Spine regions (p < 0.001). Conclusion Most spine surgeons utilized a dry or plastic occlusive dressing initially applied after surgery. The first dressing was more frequently changed during the first 3 postoperative days and replaced with the same type of dressing. While dressing policies tended not to vary according to the type of surgery, regional differences suggest that actual practice may be based on personal experience rather than available evidence.

Background: This study examines the relationship between functional disability and work ability in workers affected by low back pain (LBP) through an analysis of correlations between the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and Work Ability Index (WAI). The role of personal and work factors on functional disability/work ability levels has also been studied. LBP is the most common musculoskeletal problem and a major disabling health problem worldwide. Its etiology is multifactorial. Multidisciplinary approaches may help reduce the burden of pain and disability and improve job continuity and reintegration at work. Methods: A cohort of 264 patients affected by LBP from an Italian outpatient clinic were included in a clinical diagnostic/therapeutic trial aiming at rehabilitation and return to work through an integrated investigation protocol. Data were collected during the first medical examination using anamnestic and clinical tools. The final sample is composed of 252 patients, 57.1% man, 44.0 % blue collars, 46.4% with the high school degree, 45.6% married. Results: WAI and ODI reported a negative and fair correlation (r = –0.454; p = .000). Workers with acute LBP symptoms have a higher probability of severe disability than those with chronic LBP symptoms. White collars without depressive symptoms reported higher work ability – even in chronic disability conditions-than those with depressive symptoms. Conclusion: The study found that ODI and WAI have a convergent validity and this suggests that the two tools measure capture distinctive aspects of disability related to personal, environmental, and occupational characteristics. The most important and modifiable prognostic factors found for ODI and WAI were depressive symptoms, workday absence, and intensity of back pain. The study also found a mild association between age and ODI. The study's findings highlight the importance of using a multidisciplinary approach to manage and prevent disability due to LBP.

This paper describes the creation of a theme-based first quarter, of a two quarter sequence, general chemistry laboratory course following an argument driven inquiry format and employing specifications grading. The course contains four, two-week projects investigating the chemistry of a popular sports drink. The sugar content, dye concentration, buffering capacity, and the kinetics of dye decomposition are investigated for various flavors of Gatorade. Specifications grading is used to foster teamwork and to provide an opportunity for revision and resubmission of student work. A modified LCAS survey measured student perception of course content.

BackgroundMalnutrition, defined as weight loss and unsatisfactory nutrient intake, is very common in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) in either the early or palliative setting. Despite increased awareness, nutritional programs are not yet adequately implemented in these patients. There are several reasons for this delay: differences in composition, the expertise of the multidisciplinary teams involved in HNSCC patients’ treatment, and economic and network resources conditioning faster or slower nutritional supply delivery. This situation affects the outcomes and the quality of life of HNSCC patients.Materials and methodsWe investigated available literature about nutritional support in HNSCC patients and its impact on outcomes, prognosis, and quality of life, and we focused on the role of the multidisciplinary team. We considered 8,491 articles, and after excluding duplicates and manuscripts not written in English, 1,055 were analyzed and 73 were deemed eligible for the present work.ResultsAfter the literature review, we can state that malnutrition, sarcopenia, and cachexia are associated with systemic inflammation and closely correlated with poor outcomes. An evaluation of the nutritional status of the multidisciplinary team before, during, and after therapy could improve patient outcomes, as the goal of the therapeutic approach is widely designed.ConclusionsWe suggest that the treatment workflow definition is fundamental and propose a tailored nutritional approach that could benefit HNSCC patients’ outcomes and quality of life. These results could be achieved by a multidisciplinary team.

Background: Lesion network mapping (LNM) is a popular framework to assess clinical syndromes following brain injury. The classical approach involves embedding lesions from patients into a normative functional connectome and using the corresponding functional maps as proxies for disconnections. However, previous studies indicated limited predictive power of this approach in behavioral deficits. We hypothesized similarly low predictiveness for overall survival (OS) in glioblastoma (GBM). Methods: A retrospective dataset of patients with GBM was included (n = 99). Lesion masks were registered in the normative space to compute disconnectivity maps. The brain functional normative connectome consisted in data from 173 healthy subjects obtained from the Human Connectome Project. A modified version of the LNM was then applied to core regions of GBM masks. Linear regression, classification, and principal component (PCA) analyses were conducted to explore the relationship between disconnectivity and OS. OS was considered both as continuous and categorical (low, intermediate, and high survival) variable. Results: The results revealed no significant associations between OS and network disconnection strength when analyzed at both voxel-wise and classification levels. Moreover, patients stratified into different OS groups did not exhibit significant differences in network connectivity patterns. The spatial similarity among the first PCA of network maps for each OS group suggested a lack of distinctive network patterns associated with survival duration. Conclusions: Compared with indirect structural measures, functional indirect mapping does not provide significant predictive power for OS in patients with GBM. These findings are consistent with previous research that demonstrated the limitations of indirect functional measures in predicting clinical outcomes, underscoring the need for more comprehensive methodologies and a deeper understanding of the factors influencing clinical outcomes in this challenging disease.

Abstract Background Chronic discogenic low back pain (LBP) poses a significant global burden, yet effective therapeutic interventions directly targeting the underlying degenerative process remain elusive. After demonstrating promising results in preclinical studies, intradiscal injection of cell‐based treatments has been increasingly investigated in the clinical setting. However, most clinical trials failed to reach publication, with the few available reports showing only minor improvements. The aim of this study was to analyze the prospective clinical trials registered on ClinicalTrials.gov investigating cell therapies for LBP, with a specific emphasis on identifying critical obstacles hindering study completion, including trial design and funding sources. Methods A systematic search of prospective clinical trials investigating cell‐based treatments for chronic LBP due to intervertebral disc degeneration was performed on ClinicalTrials.gov. Extracted data encompassed study design, recruitment, experimental treatment modalities, investigated outcomes, current status, completion date, publication status, and funding sources. Fisher's exact test assessed associations between categorical variables, while a multiple logistic regression model aimed to identify factors potentially linked to the publication status of the studies. Results Our search identified 26 clinical trials. Among these, only 7 (26.9%) were published, and none of the other studies marked as completed reported any results on ClinicalTrials.gov. Fifty percent of included trials were funded by universities, whereas the rest was sponsored by industry (38.5%) or private institutions (11.5%). Experimental treatments primarily involved cell‐based or cell‐derived products of varying sources and concentrations. Products containing carriers, such as hyaluronic acid or fibrin, were more frequently funded by industry and private organizations (p = 0.0112). No significant differences emerged when comparing published and nonpublished studies based on funding, as well as between publication status and other variables. Conclusion Most clinical trials exploring cell‐based disc regenerative therapies for chronic LBP have never reached completion, with only a small fraction reporting preliminary data in publications.

ABSTRACT: Background: Low back pain (LBP) is the most frequent indication to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations of the lumbosacral spine. The individual role of soft tissues, including muscles, on LBP is not fully understood and the contribution of each MRI-derived parameter of soft tissues status on the intensity of LBP has not been investigated in detail. Methods: The study design was observational retrospective, single center carried out at a University Hospital. Images were acquired using a using a 1.5 Tesla scanner. Patients completed a symptom questionnaire and rated their pain intensity using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). The VAS scores ​​were categorized as mild, moderate, and severe using cutoff values of 3.8 and 5.7, based on the literature. Biometric data, including weight and height, were also recorded to calculate the body mass index (BMI). The ratios between intramuscular fat infiltration and net muscle area were also calculated. Patient sample included 94 patients with LBP underwent MRI of the lumbosacral spine. Results: The stepwise analysis revealed that increasing psoas net area was associated with lower VAS levels (odds ratio [OR]: 0.94: 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.90–0.98; p=.005), and an increase of one square centimeter of total psoas area resulted in a greater probability of reporting a mild (+1.21%; 95% CI: 0.37, 2.05%) or a moderate VAS (+0.40%; 95% CI: -0.02, 0.82%), Furthermore, a more severe VAS was associated with a higher BMI (OR: 1.13; 95% CI: 1.00–1.27). Conclusion: Our study demonstrates a relationship between LBP and MRI parameters of paravertebral and psoas muscles status. The psoas muscle is extremely important for spine stabilization and is linked to clinical symptoms of patients affected by LBP. These findings could contribute to future studies and improve treatment options in patients with LBP, possibly reducing the impact on disability, quality of life and socioeconomical burden.

Estimating software testability can crucially assist software managers to optimize test budgets and software quality. In this paper, we propose a new approach that radically differs from the traditional approach of pursuing testability measurements based on software metrics, e.g., the size of the code or the complexity of the designs. Our approach exploits automatic test generation and mutation analysis to quantify the evidence about the relative hardness of developing effective test cases. In the paper, we elaborate on the intuitions and the methodological choices that underlie our proposal for estimating testability, introduce a technique and a prototype that allows for concretely estimating testability accordingly, and discuss our findings out of a set of experiments in which we compare the performance of our estimations both against and in combination with traditional software metrics. The results show that our testability estimates capture a complementary dimension of testability that can be synergistically combined with approaches based on software metrics to improve the accuracy of predictions.

In the era of digitalization, the biomedical sector has been affected by the spread of artificial intelligence. In recent years, the possibility of using deep and machine learning methods for clinical diagnostic and therapeutic interventions has been emerging as an essential resource for biomedical imaging. Digital pathology represents innovation in a clinical world that looks for faster and better-performing diagnostic methods, without losing the accuracy of current human-guided analyses. Indeed, artificial intelligence has played a key role in a wide variety of applications that require the analysis of a massive amount of data, including segmentation processes in medical imaging. In this context, artificial intelligence enables the improvement of image segmentation methods, moving towards the development of fully automated systems of analysis able to support pathologists in decision-making procedures. The aim of this review is to aid biologists and clinicians in discovering the most common segmentation open-source tools, including ImageJ (v. 1.54), CellProfiler (v. 4.2.5), Ilastik (v. 1.3.3) and QuPath (v. 0.4.3), along with their customized implementations. Additionally, the tools’ role in the histological imaging field is explored further, suggesting potential application workflows. In conclusion, this review encompasses an examination of the most commonly segmented tissues and their analysis through open-source deep and machine learning tools.

The aim was to evaluate if rehabilitation procedures including occupational health (OH) and workplace participation increase return to work (RTW) rates among patients with subacute and chronic low back pain (LBP). A systematic review of randomized controlled trials was conducted using the PubMed and Cochrane databases. Main outcomes were RTW and days of sick leave. Interventions needed to be multidisciplinary including both OH and active workplace involvement in rehabilitation. Out of 1073 potentially eligible references, 8 met the inclusion criteria. Three studies had OH and 5 case managers involved in rehabilitation. Rehabilitation involving both OH and workplace improved RTW and decreased the number of sick leave days among LBP patients. Having case managers involved had no effect in RTW. In order to improve RTW, workplace visits and work ability meetings (WAMs) between OH and workplace are essential components in the rehabilitation process among patients with chronic LBP. Based on the study results, the authors suggest utilizing these co-operative interventions with workplaces in OH. Abstract Background Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a liver disorder characterized by the ac-cumulation of fat in hepatocytes without alcohol consumption. Mitochondrial dysfunction and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress play significant roles in NAFLD pathogenesis. The unfolded protein response in mitochondria (UPRmt) is an adaptive mechanism that aims to restore mitochondrial protein homeostasis and mitigate cellular stress. This study aimed to investigate the effects of ( +)-Lipoic acid (ALA) on UPRmt, inflammation, and oxidative stress in an in vitro model of NAFLD using HepG2 cells treated with palmitic acid and oleic acid to induce steatosis. Results Treatment with palmitic and oleic acids increased UPRmt-related proteins HSP90 and HSP60 (heat shock protein), and decreased CLPP (caseinolytic protease P), indicating ER stress activation. ALA treatment at 1 μM and 5 μM restored UPRmt-related protein levels. PA:OA (palmitic acid:oleic acid)-induced ER stress markers IRE1α (Inositol requiring enzyme-1), CHOP (C/EBP Homologous Protein), BIP (Binding Immunoglobulin Protein), and BAX (Bcl-2-associated X protein) were significantly reduced by ALA treatment. ALA also enhanced ER-mediated protein glycosylation and reduced oxidative stress, as evidenced by decreased GPX1 (Glutathione peroxidase 1), GSTP1 (glutathione S-transferase pi 1), and GSR (glutathione-disulfide reductase) expression and increased GSH (Glutathione) levels, and improved cellular senescence as shown by the markers β-galactosidase, γH2Ax and Klotho-beta. Conclusions In conclusion, ALA ameliorated ER stress, oxidative stress, and inflammation in HepG2 cells treated with palmitic and oleic acids, potentially offering therapeutic benefits for NAFLD providing a possible biochemical mechanism underlying ALA beneficial effects. Fourth Industrial Revolution and digital technologies are driving profound transformations within the classical industrial system. Nevertheless, design and production models in Italian fashion system are not much into these type of changes. On the one hand, because of the cultural reasons related to the concept of Made in Italy – which quality is perceived as inextricably linked to the classic way of production. On the other hand, fashion products are difficult to patent, so companies face a lot of knots on legal protection of innovations. This contribution wants to frame the current relationship between Industry 4.0 and Italian fashion system, presenting the state of innovations and limitations. The analysis of this picture will serve to illustrate how design can interact with other disciplines to manage the practices, the approaches and the tools, able to build a new useful design and productive models.

Non-contact anterior cruciate ligament injuries (NC-ACLs) represent a significant concern in sports medicine, particularly among athletes and physically active individuals. These injuries not only result in immediate functional impairment but also predispose individuals to long-term issues such as recurrent instability and early-onset osteoarthritis. This narrative review examines the biomechanical, neuromuscular, and environmental factors that contribute to the high incidence of NC-ACLs and evaluates the effectiveness of current prevention and rehabilitation strategies. The review identifies key risk factors, including improper landing mechanics, deficits in neuromuscular control, and muscle imbalances, which are pivotal in the etiology of NC-ACLs. Prevention programs that incorporate plyometric exercises, strength training, and neuromuscular education have shown efficacy in reducing injury rates. Rehabilitation protocols that emphasize a gradual return to sport, focusing on pain management, restoration of range of motion, and progressive strengthening, are critical for successful recovery and prevention of re-injury. The evidence suggests that an integrated approach, combining prevention and rehabilitation strategies tailored to the individual, is essential for minimizing NC-ACL risk and improving outcomes in affected populations.

This study investigated single lap joints in steel used for naval carpentry. The surface was mechanically treated, and then a double-sided acrylic foam tape was applied with varying surface preparation conditions. Specifically, three different conditions were examined. Tensile tests revealed that changing the type of surface preparation significantly affects the mechanical strength of the joints. The best mechanical properties were achieved when a primer was used. Our results demonstrate that this method can be effectively employed in naval applications as an alternative to welding for non-structural applications, such as the installation of brackets for mounting electrical devices (e.g., sockets).

Many science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) community college students do not complete their degree, and these students are more likely to be women or in historically excluded racial or ethnic groups. In introductory courses, low grades can trigger this exodus. Implementation of high-impact study strategies could lead to increased academic performance and retention. The examination of study strategies rarely occurs at the community college level, even though community colleges educate approximately half of all STEM students in the United States who earn a bachelor's degree. To fill this research gap, we studied students in two biology courses at a Hispanic-serving community college. Students were asked their most commonly used study strategies at the start and end of the semester. They were given a presentation on study skills toward the beginning of the semester and asked to self-assess their study strategies for each exam. We observed a significantly higher course grade for students who reported spacing their studying and creating drawings when controlling for demographic factors, and usage of these strategies increased by the end of the semester. We conclude that high-impact study strategies can be taught to students in community college biology courses and result in higher course performance.

Despite more women and underrepresented students entering engineering, there are still gaps in achievement. A potential remedy is to establish equitable team dynamics during groupwork. Groupware systems have been implemented in the workforce and, recently, piloted in undergraduate lowerdivision education to establish team norms. Our prior work found that there was a significant association between gender and the utility of rules systems to establish team norms. To assess biases regarding gender and minority groups in the rules system, we examined the differences between rules chosen by individuals and teams based on demographic characteristics in a large engineering course. Students individually identified which rules were most important when working in a team, then formed teams and performed a "negotiation" to choose which rules the team would follow. We used statistical analyses to determine whether certain demographic factors predicted how influential an individual was during the selection process. We found that demographic and educational characteristics did not have a significant influence on decision-making for team rules. Furthermore, we found that female and first-generation students were more likely to select the rule "Play an active part in the team" than their male or continuing-generation peers.
