Abstract

The majority of language model training builds on imitation learning. It covers pretraining, supervised fine-tuning, and affects the starting conditions for reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF). The simplicity and scalability of maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) for next token prediction led to its role as predominant paradigm. However, the broader field of imitation learning can more effectively utilize the sequential structure underlying autoregressive generation. We focus on investigating the inverse reinforcement learning (IRL) perspective to imitation, extracting rewards and directly optimizing sequences instead of individual token likelihoods and evaluate its benefits for fine-tuning large language models. We provide a new angle, reformulating inverse soft-Q-learning as a temporal difference regularized extension of MLE. This creates a principled connection between MLE and IRL and allows trading off added complexity with increased performance and diversity of generations in the supervised fine-tuning (SFT) setting. We find clear advantages for IRL-based imitation, in particular for retaining diversity while maximizing task performance, rendering IRL a strong alternative on fixed SFT datasets even without online data generation. Our analysis of IRL-extracted reward functions further indicates benefits for more robust reward functions via tighter integration of supervised and preference-based LLM post-training.

2. PLIC-Net: A Machine Learning Approach for 3D Interface Reconstruction in Volume of Fluid Methods

Abstract

The accurate reconstruction of immiscible fluid-fluid interfaces from the volume fraction field is a critical component of geometric Volume of Fluid (VOF) methods. A common strategy is the Piecewise Linear Interface Calculation (PLIC), which fits a plane in each mixed-phase computational cell. However, recent work goes beyond PLIC by using two planes or even a paraboloid. To select such planes or paraboloids, complex optimization algorithms as well as carefully crafted heuristics are necessary. Yet, the potential exists for a well-trained machine learning model to efficiently provide broadly applicable solutions to the interface reconstruction problem at lower costs. In this work, the viability of a machine learning approach is demonstrated in the context of a single plane reconstruction. A feed-forward deep neural network is used to predict the normal vector of a PLIC plane given volume fraction and phasic barycenter data in a $3\times3\times3$ stencil. The PLIC plane is then translated in its cell to ensure exact volume conservation. Our proposed neural network PLIC reconstruction (PLIC-Net) is equivariant to reflections about the Cartesian planes. Training data is analytically generated with $\mathcal{O}(10^6)$ randomized paraboloid surfaces, which allows for sampling a wide range of interface shapes. PLIC-Net is tested in multiphase flow simulations where it is compared to standard (E)LVIRA reconstruction algorithms, and the impact of training data statistics on PLIC-Net's performance is also explored. It is found that PLIC-Net greatly limits the formation of spurious planes and generates cleaner numerical break-up of the interface. Additionally, the computational cost of PLIC-Net is lower than that of (E)LVIRA. These results establish that machine learning is a viable approach to VOF interface reconstruction and is superior to current reconstruction algorithms for some cases.

3. Subgrid scale modeling of droplet bag breakup in VOF simulations

Abstract

The mesh-dependency of the breakup of liquid films, including their breakup length scales and resulting drop size distributions, has long been an obstacle inhibiting the computational modeling of large-scale spray systems. With the aim of overcoming this barrier, this work presents a framework for the prediction and modeling of subgrid-thickness liquid film formation and breakup within two-phase simulations using the volume of fluid method. A two-plane interface reconstruction is used to capture the development of liquid films as their thickness decreases below the mesh size. The breakup of the film is predicted with a semi-analytical model that incorporates the film geometry captured through the two-plane reconstruction. The framework is validated against experiments of the bag breakup of a liquid drop at $\text{We}=13.8$ through the comparison of the resulting drop size and velocity distributions. The generated distributions show good agreement with experimental results for drop resolutions as low as 25.6 cells across the initial diameter. The presented framework enables these drop breakup simulations to be performed at a computational cost three orders of magnitude lower than the cost of simulations utilizing adaptive mesh refinement.

4. Assessment of a Multiphase Formulation of One-Dimensional Turbulence using Direct Numerical Simulation of a Decaying Turbulent Interfacial Flow

Abstract

The interaction between turbulence and surface tension is studied numerically using the one-dimensional-turbulence (ODT) model. ODT is a stochastic model simulating turbulent flow evolution along a notional one-dimensional line of sight by applying instantaneous maps that represent the effects of individual turbulent eddies on property fields. It provides affordable high resolution of interface creation and property gradients within each phase, which are key for capturing the local behavior as well as overall trends, and has been shown to reproduce the main features of an experimentally determined regime diagram for primary jet breakup. Here, ODT is used to investigate the interaction of turbulence with an initially planar interface. The notional flat interface is inserted into a periodic box of decaying homogeneous isotropic turbulence, simulated for a variety of turbulent Reynolds and Weber numbers. Unity density and viscosity ratios serve to focus solely on the interaction between fluid inertia and the surface-tension force. Statistical measures of interface surface density and spatial structure along the direction normal to the initial surface are compared to corresponding direct-numerical-simulation (DNS) data. Allowing the origin of the lateral coordinate system to follow the location of the median interface element improves the agreement between ODT and DNS, reflecting the absence of lateral non-vortical displacements in ODT. Beyond the DNS-accessible regime, ODT is shown to obey the predicted parameter dependencies of the Kolmogorov critical scale in both the inertial and dissipative turbulent-cascade sub-ranges. Abstract

We introduce RecurrentGemma, a family of open language models which uses Google's novel Griffin architecture. Griffin combines linear recurrences with local attention to achieve excellent performance on language. It has a fixed-sized state, which reduces memory use and enables efficient inference on long sequences. We provide two sizes of models, containing 2B and 9B parameters, and provide pre-trained and instruction tuned variants for both. Our models achieve comparable performance to similarly-sized Gemma baselines despite being trained on fewer tokens.

6. RACS and SADL: Towards Robust SMR in the Wide-Area Network

Abstract

Consensus algorithms deployed in the crash fault tolerant setting chose a leader-based architecture in order to achieve the lowest latency possible. However, when deployed in the wide area they face two key robustness challenges. First, they lose liveness when the network is unreliable because they rely on timeouts to find a leader. Second, they cannot have a high replication factor because of the high load imposed on the leader-replica making it a bottleneck. This effectively limits the replication factor allowed, for a given level of throughput, thus lowering the fault tolerance threshold. In this paper, we propose RACS and SADL, a modular state machine replication algorithm that addresses these two robustness challenges. To achieve robustness under adversarial network conditions, we propose RACS, a novel crash fault-tolerant consensus algorithm. RACS consists of two modes of operations: synchronous and asynchronous, that always ensure liveness. RACS leverages the synchronous network to minimize the communication cost to O(n) and matches the lower bound of O(n2) at adversarial-case executions. To avoid the leader bottleneck and to allow higher replication factor, without sacrificing the throughput, we then propose SADL, a novel consensus-agnostic asynchronous dissemination layer. SADL separates client command dissemination from the critical path of consensus and distributes the overhead evenly among all the replicas. The combination of RACS and SADL (SADL-RACS) provides a robust and high-performing state machine replication system. 7. Capturing thin structures in VOF simulations with two-plane reconstruction

Abstract

A novel interface reconstruction strategy for volume of fluid (VOF) methods is introduced that represents the liquid-gas interface as two planes that co-exist within a single computational cell. In comparison to the piecewise linear interface calculation (PLIC), this new algorithm greatly improves the accuracy of the reconstruction, in particular when dealing with thin structures such as films. The placement of the two planes requires the solution of a non-linear optimization problem in six dimensions, which has the potential to be overly expensive. An efficient solution to this optimization problem is presented here that exploits two key ideas: an algorithm for extracting multiple plane orientations from transported surface data, and an efficient and mass-conserving distance-finding algorithm that accounts for two planes with arbitrary orientation. Additionally, a simple and robust strategy is presented to accurately represent the surface tension forces produced at the interface of subgrid-thickness films. The performance of this new VOF reconstruction is demonstrated on several test cases that illustrate the capability to handle arbitrarily thin films.

Abstract

Recurrent neural networks (RNNs) have fast inference and scale efficiently on long sequences, but they are difficult to train and hard to scale. We propose Hawk, an RNN with gated linear recurrences, and Griffin, a hybrid model that mixes gated linear recurrences with local attention. Hawk exceeds the reported performance of Mamba on downstream tasks, while Griffin matches the performance of Llama-2 despite being trained on over 6 times fewer tokens. We also show that Griffin can extrapolate on sequences significantly longer than those seen during training. Our models match the hardware efficiency of Transformers during training, and during inference they have lower latency and significantly higher throughput. 9. Simulating interfacial flows: a farewell to planes

Abstract

Over the past decades, the volume-of-fluid (VOF) method has been the method of choice for simulating atomization processes, owing to its unique ability to discretely conserve mass. Current state-of-the-art VOF methods, however, rely on the piecewise-linear interface calculation (PLIC) to represent the interface used when calculating advection fluxes. This renders the estimated curvature of the transported interface zeroth-order accurate at best, adversely impacting the simulation of surface-tension-driven flows. In the past few years, there have been several attempts at using piecewise-parabolic interface approximations instead of piecewise-linear ones for computing advection fluxes, albeit all limited to two-dimensional cases or not inherently mass conservative. In this contribution, we present our most recent work on three-dimensional piecewise-parabolic interface reconstruction and apply it in the context of the VOF method. As a result of increasing the order of the interface representation, the reconstruction of the interface and the estimation of its curvature now become a single step instead of two separate ones. The performance of this new approach is assessed both in terms of accuracy and stability and compared to the classical PLIC-VOF approach on a range of canonical test-cases and cases of surface-tension-driven instabilities.

Abstract

This report introduces a new family of multimodal models, Gemini, that exhibit remarkable capabilities across image, audio, video, and text understanding. The Gemini family consists of Ultra, Pro, and Nano sizes, suitable for applications ranging from complex reasoning tasks to on-device memory-constrained use-cases. Evaluation on a broad range of benchmarks shows that our most-capable Gemini Ultra model advances the state of the art in 30 of 32 of these benchmarks - notably being the first model to achieve human-expert performance on the well-studied exam benchmark MMLU, and improving the state of the art in every one of the 20 multimodal benchmarks we examined. We believe that the new capabilities of the Gemini family in cross-modal reasoning and language understanding will enable a wide variety of use cases. We discuss our approach toward post-training and deploying Gemini models responsibly to users through services including Gemini, Gemini Advanced, Google AI Studio, and Cloud Vertex AI.

Abstract

State-of-the-art deep learning models for tabular data have recently achieved acceptable performance to be deployed in industrial settings. However, the robustness of these models remains scarcely explored. Contrary to computer vision, there is to date no realistic protocol to properly evaluate the adversarial robustness of deep tabular models due to intrinsic properties of tabular data such as categorical features, immutability, and feature relationship constraints. To fill this gap, we propose CAA, the first efficient evasion attack for constrained tabular deep learning models. CAA is an iterative parameter-free attack that combines gradient and search attacks to generate adversarial examples under constraints. We leverage CAA to build a benchmark of deep tabular models across three popular use cases: credit scoring, phishing and botnet attacks detection. Our benchmark supports ten threat models with increasing capabilities of the attacker, and reflects real-world attack scenarios for each use case. Overall, our results demonstrate how domain knowledge, adversarial training, and attack budgets impact the robustness assessment of deep tabular models and provide security practitioners with a set of recommendations to improve the robustness of deep tabular models against various evasion attack scenarios.

Abstract

In liquid-fueled combustion systems, optimization of the fuel atomization process is critical to reducing fuel consumption and lowering pollutant emissions. Accurate and efficient computational modeling of liquid atomization can open the door to spray optimization, however it presents a significant challenge to modelers due to the extremely complex flow field and wide range of length and time scales involved. In this work, a multi-scale and multi-domain simulation strategy is used to model end-to-end the turbulent spray produced by a swirled two-fluid coaxial atomizer, a device that utilize a high-speed swirled gas stream to destabilize a co-flowing low-speed liquid, widely used in systems such as fuel injectors. Our computational method relies on sub-grid scale modeling; in particular, we will introduce a thin structure break-up model to account for topology changes, converting thin liquid structures into spherical Lagrangian particles. With such simulations, the impact of swirl on the break-up process can be analyzed by varying the swirl ratio, and we aim to quantitatively validate our simulations against experiments at identical operating conditions, including drop size statistics., Comment: 8 pages, 12 figures. Meta-analyses establishing antiemetic guidelines have demonstrated the superiority of palonosetron (PAL) over older 5-hydroxytryptamine 3-receptor antagonists in chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) prevention, but excluded patients with gliomas. Irinotecan plus bevacizumab is a treatment frequently used in MG, but is associated with low (55%) CINV complete response (CR; no emesis or use of rescue antiemetic) with commonly prescribed ondansetron. A single-arm Phase II trial was conducted in MG patients to determine the efficacy of intravenous PAL (0.25 mg) and dexamethasone (DEX; 10 mg) received in conjunction with biweekly irinotecan–bevacizumab treatment. The primary end point was the proportion of subjects achieving acute CINV CR (no emesis or antiemetic ≤24 hours postchemotherapy). Secondary end points included delayed CINV CR (days 2–5), overall CINV CR (days 1–5), and QoL, fatigue, and toxicity.Materials and methods: A two-stage design of 160 patients was planned to differentiate between CINV CR of 55% and 65% after each dose of PAL–DEX. Validated surveys assessed fatigue and QoL.Results: A total of 63 patients were enrolled, after which enrollment was terminated due to slow accrual; 52 patients were evaluable for the primary outcome of acute CINV CR. Following PAL–DEX dose administrations 1–3, acute CINV CR rates were 62%, 68%, and 70%; delayed CINV CR rates were 62%, 66%, and 70%, and overall CINV CR rates were 47%, 57%, and 62%, respectively. Compared to baseline, there was a clinically meaningful increase in fatigue during acute and overall phases, but not in the delayed phase. There were no grade ≥3 PAL–DEX treatment-related toxicities.Conclusion: Data suggest that PAL–DEX is effective in preventing CINV in MG patients, which ultimately maintains the QoL of patients with glioma. 15. Mapping the DeFi Crime Landscape: An Evidence-based Picture

Abstract

Over the past years, decentralized finance (DeFi) has been the target of numerous profit-driven crimes. However, until now, the full prevalence and cumulative impact of these crimes have not been assessed. This study provides a first comprehensive assessment of profit-driven crimes targeting the DeFi sector. To achieve this, we collected data on 1155 crime events from 2017 to 2022. Of these, 1050 were related to the DeFi industry and 105 to the centralized finance (CeFi) industry. Focusing on the former, a taxonomy was developed to clarify the similarities and differences among these crimes. All events were mapped onto the DeFi stack to assess the impacted technical layers, and the financial damages were quantified to gauge their scale. The findings show that the entire cryptoasset industry has suffered a minimum loss of US$30B, with two thirds related to centralized finance (CeFi) and one third to DeFi. Focusing solely on the latter, the results highlight that during an attack, a DeFi actor (an entity developing a DeFi technology) can serve as a direct target, as a perpetrator, or as an intermediary. The findings show that DeFi actors are the first victims of crimes targeting the DeFi industry: 52% of crime events targeted them, primarily due to technical vulnerabilities at the protocol layer, and these events accounted for 83% of all recorded financial damages. On the other hand, in 40% of crime events, DeFi actors were themselves malicious perpetrators, predominantly misusing contracts at the cryptoasset layer (e.g., rug pull scams). However, these events accounted for only 17% of all financial damages. The study's findings offer a preliminary assessment of the size and scope of crime events within the DeFi sector and highlight the vulnerable position of DeFi actors in the ecosystem.

16. APART: Diverse Skill Discovery using All Pairs with Ascending Reward and DropouT

Abstract

We study diverse skill discovery in reward-free environments, aiming to discover all possible skills in simple grid-world environments where prior methods have struggled to succeed. This problem is formulated as mutual training of skills using an intrinsic reward and a discriminator trained to predict a skill given its trajectory. Our initial solution replaces the standard one-vs-all (softmax) discriminator with a one-vs-one (all pairs) discriminator and combines it with a novel intrinsic reward function and a dropout regularization technique. The combined approach is named APART: Diverse Skill Discovery using All Pairs with Ascending Reward and Dropout. We demonstrate that APART discovers all the possible skills in grid worlds with remarkably fewer samples than previous works. Motivated by the empirical success of APART, we further investigate an even simpler algorithm that achieves maximum skills by altering VIC, rescaling its intrinsic reward, and tuning the temperature of its softmax discriminator. We believe our findings shed light on the crucial factors underlying success of skill discovery algorithms in reinforcement learning.

Abstract

Over decades, pesticide regulations have cycled between approval and implementation, followed by the discovery of negative effects on nontarget organisms that result in new regulations, pesticides, and harmful effects. This relentless pattern undermines the capacity to protect the environment from pesticide hazards and frustrates end users that need pest management tools. Wild pollinating insects are in decline, and managed pollinators such as honey bees are experiencing excessive losses, which threatens sustainable food security and ecosystem function. An increasing number of studies demonstrate the negative effects of field-realistic exposure to pesticides on pollinator health and fitness, which contribute to pollinator declines. Current pesticide approval processes, although they are superior to past practices, clearly continue to fail to protect pollinator health. In the present article, we provide a conceptual framework to reform cyclical pesticide approval processes and better protect pollinators.

Affect recognition has emerged as a potential mechanism underlying the social competence challenges experienced by pediatric brain tumour survivors (PBTSs). However, many social interactions were altered during the pandemic, with the widespread use of masking potentially impacting affect recognition abilities. Here, we examine affect recognition in PBTSs and typically developing youth (TD) after the onset of the global pandemic. Twenty-three PBTSs and 24 TD between 8 and 16 years old were recruited and completed two performance-based affect recognition tasks (full and partial facial features) and a self-reported questionnaire on mask exposure in their social interactions. Their parents completed parent proxy questionnaires on their child’s social adjustment and sociodemographics. The scores between the PBTSs and TD did not differ significantly in full (t(45) = 1.33, p = 0.19, d = 0.39, 95% CI [−0.69, 3.40]) or partial (t(37.36) = 1.56, p = 0.13, d = 0.46, 95% CI [−0.47, 3.60]) affect recognition, suggesting similar affect recognition between the two groups. These skills were also not significantly correlated with social adjustment or mask exposure (p > 0.05). However, the combined sample had significantly better scores in affect recognition when exposed to partial facial cues versus full. Additionally, participants obtained lower scores on a measure of full facial affect recognition and higher scores on a measure of partial affect recognition compared to pre-pandemic data. The pandemic may have influenced affect recognition across youth, underscoring the importance of further research into its lasting impact on the social competence of youth.

Abstract

Abstract Current treatment outcome of patients with glioblastoma (GBM) remains poor. Following standard therapy, recurrence is universal with limited survival. Tumors from 173 GBM patients are analysed for somatic mutations to generate a personalized peptide vaccine targeting tumor-specific neoantigens. All patients were treated within the scope of an individual healing attempt. Among all vaccinated patients, including 70 treated prior to progression (primary) and 103 treated after progression (recurrent), the median overall survival from first diagnosis is 31.9 months (95% CI: 25.0–36.5). Adverse events are infrequent and are predominantly grade 1 or 2. A vaccine-induced immune response to at least one of the vaccinated peptides is detected in blood samples of 87 of 97 (90%) monitored patients. Vaccine-specific T-cell responses are durable in most patients. Significantly prolonged survival is observed for patients with multiple vaccine-induced T-cell responses (53 months) compared to those with no/low induced responses (27 months; P = 0.03). Altogether, our results highlight that the application of personalized neoantigen-targeting peptide vaccine is feasible and represents a promising potential treatment option for GBM patients.

Introduction : La maladie hématologique-oncologique pédiatrique implique de nombreux défis adaptatifs. Conséquemment, des problèmes de santé mentale font parfois surface durant ou après les traitements, et ce, tant chez les jeunes que chez leurs parents. La prise en charge actuelle de ces problèmes ne semblait pas correspondre aux besoins soulevés par certains jeunes. Le rôle infirmier au Québec permet l’évaluation et la prise en charge de personnes souffrant d’un trouble de la santé physique et mentale (Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers du Québec, 2016). Ainsi, un infirmier clinicien en santé mentale possédant également de l’expérience en hématologie-oncologie pourrait offrir des soins complémentaires aux soins des psychologues, travailleurs sociaux et autres intervenants psychosociaux présents dans le service d’hématologie-oncologie et possiblement répondre à des besoins non comblés chez certains jeunes. Le projet lié au rôle de l’ICSM se fera en trois étapes : 1) le développement du rôle, 2) l’implantation, et 3) l’évaluation réalisée un an après l’implantation. L’objectif de cette première partie est de présenter la méthode utilisée pour développer le rôle de l’ICSM. Méthodologie : Le modèle a été fait en respectant la structure proposée par le cadre PEPPA (Participatory, Evidence-based, Patient-focused Process for APN role development, implementation and evaluation; Bryant-Lukosius et Dicenso, 2004). Les cinq premières étapes de ce cadre ont été utilisé pour cette première partie du projet en lien avec le développement du rôle de l’ICSM. Celles-ci sont : 1) définir la population cible; 2) définir les acteurs-clés à impliquer; 3) cibler les besoins; 4) cerner et prioriser les problèmes ainsi que fixer les objectifs; 5) définir le nouveau modèle de rôle. Résultats : Au terme de plusieurs rencontres impliquant de nombreux professionnels de la santé et des gestionnaires, un rôle d’ICSM a été développé avec une perspective flexible et transdisciplinaire afin de mieux répondre aux besoins des jeunes atteints de cancer et de leur famille (notamment des adolescents). Ce rôle a été définit selon quatre axes de pratique : 1) l’intervention auprès du patient-famille; 2) l’intervention auprès des équipes; 3) la consultation-liaison psychiatrique; 4) la formation, l’enseignement et la recherche. Conclusion : Les prochaines étapes consisteront en la mise en application d’un plan stratégique d’implantation et l’évaluation des retombées après un d’implantation.

Contexte : Le cancer pédiatrique implique de nombreux défis adaptatifs pour les patients et leur famille. Pour plusieurs, des problèmes de santé mentale font surface pendant ou après les traitements. Un infirmier clinicien en santé mentale possédant également une expertise en hémato-oncologie contribuera à la prise en charge des patients et de leur famille en offrant une vision complémentaire aux approches psychosociales. Comme les changements de pratique sont souvent difficiles et que l’introduction d’un rôle sans plan d’implantation clairement défini mène parfois à un échec, une structure d’implantation s’avérait nécessaire. La création du rôle d’infirmier clinicien en santé mentale au programme d’hématologie-oncologie pédiatrique (ICSM) comprend trois phases : 1) le développement du rôle; 2) la stratégie d’implantation; 3) l’évaluation de la faisabilité, de l’acceptabilité et de l’appréciation, à réaliser un an après l’implantation. Cet article explicite la deuxième partie du projet. Or, les objectifs du présent article sont : 1) présenter la stratégie d’implantation du rôle de l’ICSM employée; et 2) une évaluation préliminaire exploratoire de la faisabilité, de l’acceptabilité et de l’appréciation trois mois suivant l’implantation. Méthode : La stratégie d’implantation utilisée est tirée de l’approche proposée parFry et Rogers (2009), approche que nous avons adaptée au contexte de la présente étude. Les cinq étapes de l’approche sont : 1) les stratégies de communication; 2) le processus de consultation pour définir le rôle et l’étendue de la pratique; 3) l’éducation; 4) la définition des structures de support; 5) l’évaluation et les mécanismes de rétroaction. Cette dernière étape en est une d’évaluation préliminaire exploratoire réalisée trois mois après l’implantation du rôle d’ICSM à l’aide d’un sondage destiné aux infirmières, aux infirmières praticiennes spécialisées et aux médecins. Résultats : Les résultats présentent de façon détaillée les cinq éléments du plan d’implantation. Les résultats préliminaires du sondage effectué trois mois après l’implantation indiquent que l’ICSM a travaillé en moyenne 150 h/mois, a réalisé 22,7 consultations et 52,3 suivis par mois lesquels étaient d’une durée moyenne de 53,1 minutes. Au final, 96 % des soignants ont indiqués qu’il s’agit d’une expertise nécessaire en hématologie-oncologie pédiatrique, 95 % que le rôle améliore les soins psychosociaux et les soins psychiatriques. Par ailleurs, seulement 28 % des répondants considèrent avoir les connaissances/compétences nécessaires pour gérer efficacemnent la psychopharmacothérapie. Conclusion : Ces résultats semblent démontrer que la stratégie proposée par Fry et Rogers (2009) est appropriée pour le développement d’une pratique infirmière en santé mentale au programme d’hématologie-oncologie pédiatrique, en raison de la faisabilité, de l’acceptabilité et de l’appréciation du rôle de l’ICSM. La troisième partie de ce projet permettra une évaluation structurée et rigoureuse de la faisabilité, de l’acceptabilité et de l’appréciation qui sera réalisée auprès des patients rencontrés, de leurs parents et des soignants un an après l’implantation.

Introduction: Pediatric hematological and oncological illnesses present many coping challenges. Mental health issues can arise during and after treatment, in both patients and their families. The current model of care does not always seem to meet the needs identified by some young patients. In Quebec, nurses are allowed to assess and care for patients experiencing physical and mental health difficulties (Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers du Québec, 2016). Therefore, a mental health nurse clinician (MHNC) with experience in pediatric hematology/oncology could provide care that is complementary to that offered by psychologists, social workers, and other psychosocial professionals in the pediatric hematology/oncology unit in order to meet any needs that remain unmet. The MHNC project has three stages: (1) role development, (2) role implementation, and (3) role assessment one year after implementation. In this first article, we explain how the MHNC role was developed. Methodology: We used the participatory, evidence-based, patient-focused process for advanced practice nursing (APN) role development, implementation, and evaluation (PEPPA Framework; Bryant-Lukosius & Dicenso, 2004) to develop this model. The first five steps in the PEPPA Framework were applied in the creation of the MHNC role to (1) select the target population, (2) identify the stakeholders to be involved, (3) ascertain needs, (4) determine and prioritize problems and set goals, and (5) define a new model of care. Results: After multiple meetings involving numerous health professionals and managers, the MHNC role was developed with a versatile, transdisciplinary perspective to address better the needs of young cancer patients (especially those in their teens) and their families. The role was developed around four main areas of practice: (1) interventions offered to patient-family, (2) interventions offered to health professionals, (3) psychiatric consultation-liaison, and (4) education and research. Conclusion: The next steps are to use a strategic plan to implement the role and then to evaluate the impact of the role one year after implementation.

Abstract

BackgroundWhile vaccines have established utility against COVID-19, phase 3 efficacy studies have generally not comprehensively evaluated protection provided by previous infection or hybrid immunity (previous infection plus vaccination). Individual patient data from US government-supported harmonized vaccine trials provide an unprecedented sample population to address this issue. We characterized the protective efficacy of previous SARS-CoV-2 infection and hybrid immunity against COVID-19 early in the pandemic over three-to six-month follow-up and compared with vaccine-associated protection.MethodsIn this post-hoc cross-protocol analysis of the Moderna, AstraZeneca, Janssen, and Novavax COVID-19 vaccine clinical trials, we allocated participants into four groups based on previous-infection status at enrolment and treatment: no previous infection/placebo; previous infection/placebo; no previous infection/vaccine; and previous infection/vaccine. The main outcome was RT-PCR-confirmed COVID-19 >7-15 days (per original protocols) after final study injection. We calculated crude and adjusted efficacy measures.FindingsPrevious infection/placebo participants had a 92% decreased risk of future COVID-19 compared to no previous infection/placebo participants (overall hazard ratio [HR] ratio: 0.08; 95% CI: 0.05-0.13). Among single-dose Janssen participants, hybrid immunity conferred greater protection than vaccine alone (HR: 0.03; 95% CI: 0.01-0.10). Too few infections were observed to draw statistical inferences comparing hybrid immunity to vaccine alone for other trials. Vaccination, previous infection, and hybrid immunity all provided near-complete protection against severe disease.InterpretationPrevious infection, any hybrid immunity, and two-dose vaccination all provided substantial protection against symptomatic and severe COVID-19 through the early Delta period. 34. Comparison of methods for curvature estimation from volume fractions

Abstract

This paper evaluates and compares the accuracy and robustness of curvature estimation methods for three-dimensional interfaces represented implicitly by discrete volume fractions on a Cartesian mesh. The height function (HF) method is compared to three paraboloid fitting methods: fitting to the piecewise linear interface reconstruction centroids (PC), fitting to the piecewise linear interface reconstruction volumetrically (PV), and volumetrically fitting (VF) the paraboloid directly to the volume fraction field. The numerical studies presented in this work find that while the curvature error from the VF method converges with second-order accuracy as with the HF method for static interfaces represented by exact volume fractions, the PV method best balances low curvature errors with low computational cost for dynamic interfaces when the interface reconstruction and advection are coupled to a two-phase Navier-Stokes solver.

Background: Social competence is a domain in which pediatric brain tumour survivors (PBTS) are at risk of challenges. To follow-up on our earlier work, in this study we assessed specific social interaction behaviors and emotional functioning in PBTS relative to typically developing youth (TD). The study coincided with the onset of the global pandemic. Methods: Sixteen PBTS and 16 typically developing youth (TD) between 8–16 years old participated in the study. Youth completed an assessment of social behavior and parents completed online surveys regarding child social and emotional adjustment. Results: PBTS experienced greater impairments in social interaction behaviors and on indices of social adjustment relative to TD. PBTS and TD experienced similar levels of emotional problems. Social behavior challenges were associated with indices of anxiety, rather than depression. Time since pandemic onset was not associated with social emotional outcomes. Conclusions: It will be important to monitor and support the social adjustment of populations such as PBTS, as well as the emotional adjustment across PBTS and TD youth, following the pandemic.

Abstract

Abstract Climate change mitigation technologies have been a focus in reducing atmospheric carbon levels for the past few years. One such mitigation technology is pyrolysis, where biomass feedstocks are combusted at elevated temperatures for varying durations to produce three main products: biochar, bio-oil, and biogas. While bio-oil and biogas are typically used to produce energy via further combustion, biochar can be used in several different applications. Furthermore, using forest harvest residues as a feedstock for biochar production helps use excess biomass from the forestry industry that was previously assumed unmarketable. In our study, we combined forest carbon analysis modelling with cradle-to-gate life cycle emissions to determine the greenhouse gas emissions of biochar produced from forest harvest residues. We examined three collection scenarios, spanning two harvesting methods in one forest management unit in northern Ontario, Canada. From our analysis, we observed immediate reductions (− 0.85 tCO2eq·tbiochar −1 in year 1) in CO2-equivalent emissions (CO2eq) when producing biochar from forest harvest residues that would have undergone controlled burning, without considering the end use of the biochar. For the forest harvest residues that would remain in-forest to decay over time, producing biochar would increase overall emissions by about 6 tCO2eq·tbiochar −1. Abstract Background Over the last decade, there has been an emerging trend of recreational misuse of several drugs and inhaled solvent including ethyl chloride. This case report follows CARE guidelines and highlights, with supporting video, the neurological features of ethyl chloride intoxication. Case presentation A 48-year-old man was seen for the sudden occurrence of an unsteady gait with dizziness. His only medical history was a chronic and treated HIV infection without any complications. Clinical examination revealed a cerebellar syndrome associated with impairment of short-term memory. Biological and radiological workups were normal. After several days, the patient recalled ethyl chloride inhalation. He fully recovered after being discharged from hospital. Conclusion Clinicians should recognise the clinical features and neurological manifestations of ethyl chloride intoxication due to the potential fatal cardiovascular complications of this intoxication.

38. The Development and Implementation of Align: A Multidimensional Program Designed to Enhance the Success of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) Graduate Students in Communication Sciences and Disorders

Abstract

The critical lack of racially and ethnically diverse healthcare professionals in the field of Communication Sciences & Disorders (CSD) in contrast to the increasing diversity of the U.S. population may contribute to healthcare disparities and negatively impact healthcare outcomes. It is therefore imperative for transformational programs and practices to be enacted to substantially increase the number of CSD professionals representing Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC). As training institutions that graduate and contribute to the certification of CSD professionals, universities are fundamental for contributing to this change. Numerous barriers have been identified that limit the number of underrepresented minority students who matriculate in and graduate from speech-language pathology and audiology graduate programs. At Syracuse University, a group of academic and clinical CSD faculty developed a program to specifically address these barriers: the Academic Skill Building and Networking (ALIGN) program. ALIGN implements a multifaceted approach toward facilitating the success of CSD BIPOC graduate students through the integration of academic and professional skill building, peer mentoring and networking, and professional mentoring and networking into the program curriculum. This study described the rationale and development of the ALIGN program, and reported quantitative and qualitative survey results to determine the preliminary effects of this program on an inaugural cohort of ALIGN participants. Overall, quantitative and qualitative data indicated that ALIGN had a substantial, positive impact on academic skills relative to study habits, understanding difficult course concepts, and general learning, and provided crucial support and connection opportunities with fellow BIPOC students.

39. Like Any Other Trap: The Circuitous Path of Student Loan Repayment

This paper studies the patterns of individuals' student loan repayment for up to 12 years, tracking borrowers through the formative ages of the early 20s to the late 30s. Using social sequence and cluster analysis to understand these longitudinal repayment histories, we identify five archetypes of loan repayment that describe borrowers' experiences: persistent defaulters, perpetual payers, rapid full payers, late full payers, and consolidators. We find significant stratification by race/ethnicity, social class, and institutional sector into repayment clusters, with minoritized borrowers and those attending for-profit institutions more likely to experience adverse borrowing outcomes and to experience them for longer.

The generation of localized magnetic field gradients by on-chip nanomagnets is important for a variety of technological applications, in particular for spin qubits. To advance beyond the empirical design of these nanomagnets, we propose a systematic and general approach based on the micromagnetic formulation of an optimal field gradient source. We study the different field configurations that can be realized and find out quantitatively the most suitable ferromagnetic layer geometries. Using micromagnetic simulations, we then investigate the minimum requirements for reaching magnetic saturation in these nanomagnets. Abstract

Optical ultrasound (OpUS) imaging is an ultrasound modality that utilizes fiber-optic ultrasound sources and detectors to perform pulse-echo ultrasound imaging. These probes can be constructed entirely from glass optical fibers and plastic components, and as such, these devices have been predicted to be compatible with computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), modalities that use intense electromagnetic fields for imaging. However, to date, this compatibility has not been demonstrated. In this work, a free-hand OpUS imaging system was developed specifically to investigate the compatibility of OpUS systems with CT and MRI imaging systems. The OpUS imaging platform discussed in this work was used to perform real-time OpUS imaging under (separately) concurrent CT and MRI. CT and MRI imaging of the OpUS probe was used to determine if the probe itself would induce artifacts in the CT and MRI imaging, and ultrasound resolution targets and background measurements were used to assess any impact of CT and MRI on the OpUS signal fidelity. These measurements demonstrate that there was negligible interaction between the OpUS system and both the CT and MRI systems, and to further demonstrate this capability, concurrent OpUS-CT and OpUS-MRI imaging was conducted of a tissue-mimicking phantom and a dynamic motion phantom. This work presents a comprehensive demonstration of an OpUS imaging system operating alongside CT and MRI, which opens up new applications of ultrasound imaging in electromagnetically challenging settings.

Summary: Whole-genome duplication (WGD) occurs in all kingdoms and impacts speciation, domestication, and cancer outcome. However, doubled DNA management can be challenging for nascent polyploids. The study of within-species polyploidy (autopolyploidy) permits focus on this DNA management aspect, decoupling it from the confounding effects of hybridization (in allopolyploid hybrids). How is autopolyploidy tolerated, and how do young polyploids stabilize? Here, we introduce a powerful model to address this: the genus Cochlearia, which has experienced many polyploidization events. We assess meiosis and other polyploid-relevant phenotypes, generate a chromosome-scale genome, and sequence 113 individuals from 33 ploidy-contrasting populations. We detect an obvious autopolyploidy-associated selection signal at kinetochore components and ion transporters. Modeling the selected alleles, we detail evidence of the kinetochore complex mediating adaptation to polyploidy. We compare candidates in independent autopolyploids across three genera separated by 40 million years, highlighting a common function at the process and gene levels, indicating evolutionary flexibility in response to polyploidy.

44. Torsion points and concurrent exceptional curves on del Pezzo surfaces of degree one

Abstract

The blow-up of the anticanonical base point on a del Pezzo surface $X$ of degree 1 gives rise to a rational elliptic surface $\mathscr{E}$ with only irreducible fibers. The sections of minimal height of $\mathscr{E}$ are in correspondence with the $240$ exceptional curves on $X$. A natural question arises when studying the configuration of these curves: if a point on $X$ is contained in 'many' exceptional curves, it is torsion on its fiber on $\mathscr{E}$? In 2005, Kuwata proved for the analogous question on del Pezzo surfaces of degree $2$, where there are 56 exceptional curves, that if 'many' equals $4$ or more, the answer is yes. In this paper, we prove that for del Pezzo surfaces of degree 1, the answer is yes if 'many' equals $9$ or more. Moreover, we give counterexamples where a \textsl{non}-torsion point lies in the intersection of $7$ exceptional curves. Abstract

We provide closed-form expressions for the first moments (i.e., the volume and volume-weighted centroid) of a polyhedron clipped by a paraboloid, that is, of a polyhedron intersected with the subset of the three-dimensional real space located on one side of a paraboloid. These closed-form expressions are derived following successive applications of the divergence theorem and the judicious parametrization of the intersection of the polyhedron's faces with the paraboloid. We provide means for identifying ambiguous discrete intersection topologies, and propose a corrective procedure for preventing their occurence. Finally, we put our proposed closed-form expressions and numerical approach to the test with millions of random and manually engineered polyhedron/paraboloid intersection configurations. The results of these tests show that we are able to provide robust machine-accurate estimates of the first moments at a computational cost that is within one order of magnitude of that of state-of-the-art half-space clipping algorithms.

Abstract

Consensus algorithms are deployed in the wide area to achieve high availability for geographically replicated applications. Wide-area consensus is challenging due to two main reasons: (1) low throughput due to the high latency overhead of client request dissemination and (2) network asynchrony that causes consensus protocols to lose liveness. In this paper, we propose Mandator and Sporades, a modular state machine replication algorithm that enables high performance and resiliency in the wide-area setting. To address the high client request dissemination overhead challenge, we propose Mandator, a novel consensus-agnostic asynchronous dissemination layer. Mandator separates client request dissemination from the critical path of consensus to obtain high performance. Composing Mandator with Multi-Paxos (Mandator-Paxos) delivers significantly high throughput under synchronous networks. However, under asynchronous network conditions, Mandator-Paxos loses liveness which results in high latency. To achieve low latency and robustness under asynchrony, we propose Sporades, a novel omission fault-tolerant consensus algorithm. Sporades consists of two modes of operations -- synchronous and asynchronous -- that always ensure liveness. The combination of Mandator and Sporades (Mandator-Sporades) provides a robust and high-performing state machine replication system. We implement and evaluate Mandator-Sporades in a wide-area deployment running on Amazon EC2. Our evaluation shows that in the synchronous execution, Mandator-Sporades achieves 300k tx/sec throughput in less than 900ms latency, outperforming Multi-Paxos, EPaxos and Rabia by 650\% in throughput, at a modest expense of latency. Furthermore, we show that Mandator-Sporades outperforms Mandator-Paxos, Multi-Paxos, and EPaxos in the face of targeted distributed denial-of-service attacks.

Abstract Cranberry is associated with multiple health benefits, which are mostly attributed to its high content of (poly)phenols, particularly flavan-3-ols. However, clinical trials attempting to demonstrate these positive effects have yielded heterogeneous results, partly due to the high inter-individual variability associated with gut microbiota interaction with these molecules. In fact, several studies have demonstrated the ability of these molecules to modulate the gut microbiota in animal and in vitro models, but there is a scarcity of information in human subjects. In addition, it has been recently reported that cranberry also contains high concentrations of oligosaccharides, which could contribute to its bioactivity. Hence, the aim of this study was to fully characterize the (poly)phenolic and oligosaccharidic contents of a commercially available cranberry extract and evaluate its capacity to positively modulate the gut microbiota of 28 human subjects. After only four days, the (poly)phenols and oligosaccharides-rich cranberry extract, induced a strong bifidogenic effect, along with an increase in the abundance of several butyrate-producing bacteria, such as Clostridium and Anaerobutyricum. Plasmatic and fecal short-chain fatty acids profiles were also altered by the cranberry extract with a decrease in acetate ratio and an increase in butyrate ratio. Finally, to characterize the inter-individual variability, we stratified the participants according to the alterations observed in the fecal microbiota following supplementation. Interestingly, individuals having a microbiota characterized by the presence of Prevotella benefited from an increase in Faecalibacterium with the cranberry extract supplementation.

Abstract

Abstract Background During cardiac surgery, transcranial Doppler (TCD) represents a non-invasive modality that allows measurement of red blood cell flow velocities in the cerebral arteries. TCD can also be used to detect and monitor embolic material in the cerebral circulation. Detection of microemboli is reported as a high intensity transient signal (HITS). The importance of cerebral microemboli during cardiac surgery has been linked to the increased incidence of postoperative renal failure, right ventricular dysfunction, and hemodynamic instability. The objective of this study is to determine whether the embolic load is associated with hemodynamic instability during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) separation and postoperative complications. Methods A retrospective single-centre cohort study of 354 patients undergoing cardiac surgery between December 2015 and March 2020 was conducted. Patients were divided in tertiles, where 117 patients had a low quantity of embolic material (LEM), 119 patients have a medium quantity of microemboli (MEM) and 118 patients who have a high quantity of embolic material (HEM). The primary endpoint was a difficult CPB separation. Abstract

Polyphenols are phytochemicals commonly found in plant-based diets which have demonstrated immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties. However, the interplay between polyphenols and pathogens at mucosal barrier surfaces has not yet been elucidated in detail. Here, we show that proanthocyanidin (PAC) polyphenols interact with gut parasites to influence immune function and gut microbial-derived metabolites in mice. PAC intake inhibited mastocytosis during infection with the small intestinal roundworm Heligmosomoides polygyrus, and altered the host tissue transcriptome at the site of infection with the large intestinal whipworm Trichuris muris, with a notable enhancement of type-1 inflammatory and interferon-driven gene pathways. In the absence of infection, PAC intake promoted the expansion of Turicibacter within the gut microbiota, increased fecal short chain fatty acids, and enriched phenolic metabolites such as phenyl-γ-valerolactones in the cecum. However, these putatively beneficial effects were reduced in PAC-fed mice infected with T. muris, suggesting concomitant parasite infection can attenuate gut microbial-mediated PAC catabolism. Collectively, our results suggest an inter-relationship between a phytonutrient and infection, whereby PAC may augment parasite-induced inflammation (most prominently with the cecum dwelling T. muris), and infection may abrogate the beneficial effects of health-promoting phytochemicals.
