Abstract

This paper presents the usage of shape memory alloys (SMA) in civil engineering. It presents 2 examples of buildings that were retrofitted using SMAs. Some examples of SMA usages are presented. The SMA operating principle is presented and a mathematical model is proposed. Control methods are discussed with emphasis on the sensorless ones. A control board is proposed. The resistance versus current characteristic is measured for a typical NiTi wire. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
