We present a detailed study of the MASTER OT J030227.28+191754.5 outburst in 2021-2022, reaching an amplitude of 10.2 mag and a duration of 60 d. The detections of (1) the double-peaked optical emission lines, and (2) the early and ordinary superhumps, established that MASTER OT J030227.28+191754.5 is an extremely energetic WZ Sge-type dwarf nova (DN). Based on the superhump observations, we obtained its orbital period and mass ratio as 0.05986(1) d and 0.063(1), respectively. These are within a typical range of low-mass-ratio DNe. According to the binary parameters derived based on the thermal-tidal instability model, our analyses showed that (1) the standard disk model requires an accretion rate $\simeq$ 10$^{20}$ g s$^{-1}$ to explain its peak optical luminosity and (2) large mass was stored in the disk at the outburst onset. These cannot be explained solely by the impact of its massive ($\gtrsim$ 1.15 M$_\odot$) primary white dwarf implied by Kimura et al. (2023). Instead, we propose that the probable origin of this enormously energetic DN outburst is the even lower quiescence viscosity than other WZ Sge-type DNe. This discussion is qualitatively valid for most possible binary parameter spaces unless the inclination is low ($\lesssim 40^\circ$) enough for the disk to be bright explaining the outburst amplitude. Such low inclinations, however, would not allow detectable amplitude of early superhumps in the current thermal-tidal instability model. The optical spectra at outburst maximum showed the strong emission lines of Balmer, He I, and He II series whose core is narrower than $\sim 800$ km s$^{-1}$. We present spot properties on 32 periodic young stellar objects in IC 5070. Long term, $\sim$5 yr, light curves in the $V$, $R$, and $I$-bands are obtained through the HOYS (Hunting Outbursting Young Stars) citizen science project. These are dissected into six months long slices, with 3 months oversampling, to measure 234 sets of amplitudes in all filters. We fit 180 of these with reliable spot solutions. Two thirds of spot solutions are cold spots, the lowest is 2150 K below the stellar temperature. One third are warm spots that are above the stellar temperature by less than $\sim$2000 K. Cold and warm spots have maximum surface coverage values of 40 percent, although only 16 percent of warm spots are above 20 percent surface coverage as opposed to 60 percent of the cold spots. Warm spots are most likely caused by a combination of plages and low density accretion columns, most common on objects without inner disc excess emission in $K-W2$. Five small hot spot solutions have $<3$ percent coverage and are 3000 - 5000 K above the stellar temperature. These are attributed to accretion, and four of them occur on the same object. The majority of our objects are likely to be accreting. However, we observe very few accretion hot spots as either the accretion is not stable on our timescale or the photometry is dominated by other features. We do not identify cyclical spot behaviour on the targets. We present our optical photometric observations of the 2022 eruption of the recurrent nova U Scorpii (U Sco) using 49,152 data points over 70 d following the optical peak. We have also analyzed its soft X-ray (0.3--1 keV) light curve by the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. During the 2022 eruption, the optical plateau stage started 13.8--15.0 d and ended 23.8--25.0 d after the optical peak. The soft X-ray stage started 14.6--15.3 d and ended 38.7--39.5 d after the optical peak. Both stages started later and had shorter durations, and the soft X-ray light curve peaked earlier and was less luminous compared to those during the U Sco 2010 eruption. These points suggest that there were differences in the envelope mass between the different cycles of the nova eruption. Furthermore, we have analyzed the optical eclipses during the 2022 eruption. The primary eclipse was first observed 10.4--11.6 d after the optical peak, earlier than the beginning of the optical plateau stage. This sequence of events can be explained by the receding ejecta photosphere associated with the expanding nova ejecta. We have determined the ingress and egress phases of the primary eclipses and estimated the outer radius of the optical light source centered at the white dwarf (WD). During the optical plateau stage, the source radius remained $\sim$1.2 times larger than the Roche volume radius of the primary WD, being close to the L1 point. When the optical plateau stage ended, the source radius drastically shrank to the tidal truncation radius within a few orbital periods. The Hunting Outbursting Young Stars (HOYS) project performs long-term, optical, multi-filter, high cadence monitoring of 25 nearby young clusters and star forming regions. Utilising Gaia DR3 data we have identified about 17000 potential young stellar members in 45 coherent astrometric groups in these fields. Twenty one of them are clear young groups or clusters of stars within one kiloparsec and they contain 9143 Gaia selected potential members. The cluster distances, proper motions and membership numbers are determined. We analyse long term (about 7yr) V, R, and I-band light curves from HOYS for 1687 of the potential cluster members. One quarter of the stars are variable in all three optical filters, and two thirds of these have light curves that are symmetric around the mean. Light curves affected by obscuration from circumstellar materials are more common than those affected by accretion bursts, by a factor of 2-4. The variability fraction in the clusters ranges from 10 to almost 100 percent, and correlates positively with the fraction of stars with detectable inner disks, indicating that a lot of variability is driven by the disk. About one in six variables shows detectable periodicity, mostly caused by magnetic spots. We study the evolution of the FU Ori object V960 Mon since its outburst, using available multi-wavelength photometric time series over 8 years, complemented by several epochs of moderate-dispersion spectrophotometry. We find that the source fading can be well-described by a decrease in the temperature of the inner disk, which results from a combination of decreasing accretion rate and increasing inner disk radius. We present time-series photometry during eruption of the extremely fast nova V1674 Herculis (Nova Her 2021). The 2021 light curve showed periodic signals at 0.152921(3) d and 501.486(5) s, which we interpret as respectively the orbital and white dwarf spin-periods in the underlying binary. We also detected a sideband signal at the /difference/ frequency between these two clocks. During the first 15 days of outburst, the spin-period appears to have increased by 0.014(1)%. This increase probably arose from the sudden loss of high-angular-momentum gas ("the nova explosion") from the rotating, magnetic white dwarf. Both periodic signals appeared remarkably early in the outburst, which we attribute to the extreme speed with which the nova evolved (and became transparent to radiation from the inner binary). After that very fast initial increase of ~71 ms, the spin-period commenced a steady decrease of ~160 ms/year -- about 100x faster than usually seen in intermediate polars. We present optical photometry of six intermediate polars that exhibit transitions to a low-flux state. For four of these systems, DW Cnc, V515 And, V1223 Sgr and RX J2133.7+5107, we are able to perform timing analysis in and out of the low states. We find that, for DW Cnc and V515 And, the dominant periodicities in the light curves change as the flux decreases, indicating a change in the sources' accretion properties as they transition to the low state. For V1223 Sgr we find that the variability is almost completely quenched at the lowest flux, but do not find evidence for a changing accretion geometry. For RX J2133.7+5107, the temporal properties do not change in the low state, but we do see a period of enhanced accretion that is coincident with increased variability on the beat frequency, which we do not associate with a change in the accretion mechanisms in the system., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ. How a black hole accretes matter and how this process is regulated are fundamental but unsolved questions in astrophysics. In transient black-hole binaries, a lot of mass stored in an accretion disk is suddenly drained to the central black hole because of thermal-viscous instability. This phenomenon is called an outburst and is observable at various wavelengths (Frank et al., 2002). During the outburst, the accretion structure in the vicinity of a black hole shows dramatical transitions from a geometrically-thick hot accretion flow to a geometrically-thin disk, and the transition is observed at X-ray wavelengths (Remillard, McClintock, 2006; Done et al., 2007). However, how that X-ray transition occurs remains a major unsolved problem (Dunn et al., 2008). Here we report extensive optical photometry during the 2018 outburst of ASASSN-18ey (MAXI J1820$+$070), a black-hole binary at a distance of 3.06 kpc (Tucker et al., 2018; Torres et al., 2019) containing a black hole and a donor star of less than one solar mass. We found optical large-amplitude periodic variations similar to superhumps which are well observed in a subclass of white-dwarf binaries (Kato et al., 2009). In addition, the start of the stage transition of the optical variations was observed 5 days earlier than the X-ray transition. This is naturally explained on the basis of our knowledge regarding white dwarf binaries as follows: propagation of the eccentricity inward in the disk makes an increase of the accretion rate in the outer disk, resulting in huge mass accretion to the black hole. Moreover, we provide the dynamical estimate of the binary mass ratio by using the optical periodic variations for the first time in transient black-hole binaries. We present spectroscopic and photometric observations of 17 dwarf-nova superoutbursts obtained by KOOLS-IFU mounted on the 3.8 m telescope Seimei at Okayama Observatory of Kyoto University and through VSNET collaboration. Our spectroscopic observations for six outbursts were performed within 1 d from their optical peak. 11 objects (TCP J00590972+3438357. ASASSN-19ado, TCP J06073081-0101501, ZTF20aavnpug, ASASSN-19ady, MASTER OT J061642.05+435617.9, TCP J20034647+1335125, ASASSN-20kv, ASASSN-20kw, MASTER OT J213908.79+161240.2, and ASASSN-20mf) were previously unknown systems, and our observations enabled quick classification of their transient type. These results illustrate that Seimei telescope has the capability to conduct quick follow-up observations of unknown transients. Our photometric observations yielded that 11 objects are WZ Sge-type dwarf novae and their candidates, and the other six objects are SU UMa-type dwarf novae and their candidates. The He II 4686\AA~ emission line was clearly detected among ASASSN-19ado, TCP J06073081-0101501 and MASTER OT J213908.79+161240.2, whose association with a spiral arm structure in an accretion disk has been suggested in the previous studies. We present a study of the orbital light curves of the recurrent nova IM Normae since its 2002 outburst. The broad "eclipses" recur with a 2.46 hour period, which increases on a timescale of 1.28(16)x10^6 years. Under the assumption of conservative mass-transfer, this suggests a rate near 10^-7 M_sol/year, and this agrees with the estimated /accretion/ rate of the postnova, based on our estimate of luminosity. IM Nor appears to be a close match to the famous recurrent nova T Pyxidis. Both stars appear to have very high accretion rates, sufficient to drive the recurrent-nova events. Both have quiescent light curves which suggest strong heating of the low-mass secondary, and very wide orbital minima which suggest obscuration of a large "corona" around the primary. And both have very rapid orbital period increases, as expected from a short-period binary with high mass transfer from the low-mass component. We report the detailed history of spin-period changes in five intermediate polars (DQ Herculis, AO Piscium, FO Aquarii, V1223 Sagittarii, and BG Canis Minoris) during the 30-60 years since their original discovery. Most are slowly spinning up, although there are sometimes years-long episodes of spin-down. This is supportive of the idea that the underlying magnetic white dwarfs are near spin equilibrium. The HOYS citizen science project conducts long term, multifilter, high cadence monitoring of large YSO samples with a wide variety of professional and amateur telescopes. We present the analysis of the light curve of V1490Cyg in the Pelican Nebula. We show that colour terms in the diverse photometric data can be calibrated out to achieve a median photometric accuracy of 0.02mag in broadband filters, allowing detailed investigations into a variety of variability amplitudes over timescales from hours to several years. Using GaiaDR2 we estimate the distance to the Pelican Nebula to be 870$^{+70}_{-55}$pc. V1490Cyg is a quasi-periodic dipper with a period of 31.447$\pm$0.011d. The obscuring dust has homogeneous properties, and grains larger than those typical in the ISM. Larger variability on short timescales is observed in U and R$_c-$H$\alpha$, with U-amplitudes reaching 3mag on timescales of hours, indicating the source is accreting. The H$\alpha$ equivalent width and NIR/MIR colours place V1490Cyg between CTTS/WTTS and transition disk objects. The material responsible for the dipping is located in a warped inner disk, about 0.15AU from the star. This mass reservoir can be filled and emptied on time scales shorter than the period at a rate of up to 10$^{-10}$M$_\odot$/yr, consistent with low levels of accretion in other T Tauri stars. Most likely the warp at this separation from the star is induced by a protoplanet in the inner accretion disk. Continuing the project described by Kato et al. (2009, PASJ, 61, S395, arXiv/0905.1757), we collected times of superhump maxima for 102 SU UMa-type dwarf novae observed mainly during the 2017 season and characterized these objects. WZ Sge-type stars identified in this study are PT And, ASASSN-17ei, ASASSN-17el, ASASSN-17es, ASASSN-17fn, ASASSN-17fz, ASASSN-17hw, ASASSN-17kd, ASASSN-17la, PNV J20205397+2508145 and TCP J00332502-3518565. We obtained new mass ratios for 7 objects using growing superhumps (stage A). ASASSN-17gf is an EI Psc-type object below the period minimum. CRTS J080941.3+171528 and DDE 51 are objects in the period gap and both showed long-lasting phase of stage A superhumps. IW And stars are a recently recognized group of dwarf novae which are characterized by a repeated sequence of brightening from a standstill-like phase with damping oscillations followed by a deep dip. Kimura et al. (2019) recently proposed a model based on thermal-viscous disk instability in a tilted disk to reproduce the IW And-type characteristics. IM Eri experienced the IW And-type phase in 2018 and we recorded three cycles of the (damping) oscillation phase terminated by brightening. We identified two periods during the IW And-type state: 4-5 d small-amplitude (often damping) oscillations and a 34-43 d long cycle. This behavior is typical for an IW And-type star. The object gradually brightened within the long cycle before the next brightening which terminated the (damping) oscillation phase. This observation agrees with the increasing disk mass during the long cycle predicted by a model of thermal-viscous disk instability in a tilted disk (Kimura et al. 2019). The intermediate polar FO Aquarii (FO Aqr) experienced its first-reported low-accretion states in 2016, 2017, and 2018, and using newly available photographic plates, we identify pre-discovery low states in 1965, 1966, and 1974. The primary focus of our analysis, however, is an extensive set of time-series photometry obtained between 2002 and 2018, with particularly intensive coverage of the 2016-2018 low states. After computing an updated spin ephemeris for the white dwarf (WD), we show that its spin period began to increase in 2014 after having spent 27 years decreasing; no other intermediate polar has experienced a sign change of its period derivative, but FO Aqr has now done so twice. Our central finding is that the recent low states all occurred shortly after the WD began to spin down, even though no low states were reported in the preceding quarter-century, when it was spinning up. Additionally, the system's mode of accretion is extremely sensitive to the mass-transfer rate, with accretion being almost exclusively disk-fed when FO Aqr is brighter than V~14 and substantially stream-fed when it is not. Even in the low states, a grazing eclipse remains detectable, confirming the presence of a disk-like structure (but not necessarily a Keplerian accretion disk). We relate these various observations to theoretical predictions that during the low state, the system's accretion disk dissipates into a non-Keplerian ring of diamagnetic blobs. Finally, a new XMM-Newton observation from a high state in 2017 reveals an anomalously soft X-ray spectrum and diminished X-ray luminosity compared to pre-2016 observations., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

PDS 110 is a young disk-hosting star in the Orion OB1A association. Two dimming events of similar depth and duration were seen in 2008 (WASP) and 2011 (KELT), consistent with an object in a closed periodic orbit. In this paper we present data from a ground-based observing campaign designed to measure the star both photometrically and spectroscopically during the time of predicted eclipse in September 2017. Despite high-quality photometry, the predicted eclipse did not occur, although coherent structure is present suggesting variable amounts of stellar flux or dust obscuration. We also searched for RV oscillations caused by any hypothetical companion and can rule out close binaries to 0.1 $M_\odot$. A search of Sonneberg plate archive data also enabled us to extend the photometric baseline of this star back more than 50 years, and similarly does not re-detect any deep eclipses. Taken together, they suggest that the eclipses seen in WASP and KELT photometry were due to aperiodic events. It would seem that PDS 110 undergoes stochastic dimmings that are shallower and shorter-duration than those of UX Ori variables, but may have a similar mechanism., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS; 12 pages, 7 figures; Supplementary photometric data in zipped latex source as all_photometry.csv

We found that the SU UMa-type dwarf nova NY Ser in the period gap [orbital period 0.097558(6) d] showed standstills twice in 2018. This is the first clear demonstration of a standstill occurring between superoutbursts of an SU UMa-type dwarf nova. There was no sign of superhumps during the standstill, and at least one superoutburst directly started from the standstill. This provides strong evidence that the 3:1 resonance was excited during standstills. This phenomenon indicates that the disk radius can grow during standstills. We also interpret that the condition close to the limit of the tidal instability caused early quenching of superoutbursts, which resulted substantial amount of matter left in the disk after the superoutburst. We interpret that the substantial matter in the disk in condition close to the limit of the tidal instability is responsible for standstills (as in the high mass-transfer system NY Ser) or multiple rebrightenings (as in the low mass-transfer system V1006 Cyg)., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, Supporting information in si.pdf, accepted for publication in PASJ (Letters)

Light curves of the Z Cam type dwarf nova AT Cnc observed during standstill in 2016 and 2018 are analyzed. On the time scale of hours, previous reports on periodicities, in particular the presence of negative superhumps, could not be confirmed. Instead, a modulation with a period equal to the spectroscopic orbital period was detected which we thus interpret as a manifestations of the binary revolution. It enables us to derive a more accurate value of 0.201634 $\pm$ 0.000005 days (or its alias of 0.021580 days) for the period. AT Cnc also exhibits a hitherto unreported modulation of 25.731 $\pm$ 0.005 min, stable in period but not in amplitude over the entire time base of two years of the observations. We tentatively interpret this modulation in the context of an intermediate polar model for the system.

The star KIC 8462852 (Boyajian's Star) displays both fast dips of up to 20% on time scales of days, plus long-term secular fading by up to 19% on time scales from a year to a century. We report on CCD photometry of KIC 8462852 from 2015.75 to 2018.18, with 19,176 images making for 1,866 nightly magnitudes in BVRI. Our light curves show a continuing secular decline (by 0.023 +- 0.003 mags in the B-band) with three superposed dips with duration 120-180 days. This demonstrates that there is a continuum of dip durations from a day to a century, so that the secular fading is seen to be by the same physical mechanism as the short-duration Kepler dips. The BVRI light curves all have the same shape, with the slopes and amplitudes for VRI being systematically smaller than in the B-band by factors of 0.77 +- 0.05, 0.50 +- 0.05, and 0.31 +- 0.05. We rule out any hypothesis involving occultation of the primary star by any star, planet, solid body, or optically thick cloud. But these ratios are the same as that expected for ordinary extinction by dust clouds. This chromatic extinction implies dust particle sizes going down to ~0.1 micron, suggesting that this dust will be rapidly blown away by stellar radiation pressure, so the dust clouds must have formed within months. The modern infrared observations were taken at a time when there was at least 12.4% +- 1.3% dust coverage (as part of the secular dimming), and this is consistent with dimming originating in circumstellar dust., Comment: MNRAS in press, 19 pages, 4 figures

We present optical photometry of superoutbursts in 2016 of two WZ Sge-type dwarf novae (DNe), ASASSN-16dt and ASASSN-16hg. Their light curves showed a dip in brightness between the first plateau stage with no ordinary superhumps (or early superhumps) and the second plateau stage with ordinary superhumps. We find that the dip is produced by slow evolution of the 3:1 resonance tidal instability and that it would be likely observed in low mass-ratio objects. The estimated mass ratio ($q \equiv M_{2}/M_{1}$) from the period of developing (stage A) superhumps (0.06420(3) d) was 0.036(2) in ASASSN-16dt. Additionally, its superoutburst has many properties similar to those in other low-$q$ WZ Sge-type DNe: long-lasting stage A superhumps, small superhump amplitudes, long delay of ordinary superhump appearance, and slow decline rate in the plateau stage with superhumps. The very small mass ratio and observational characteristics suggest that this system is one of the best candidates for a period bouncer -- a binary accounting for the missing population of post-period minimum cataclysmic variables. Although it is not clearly verified due to the lack of detection of stage A superhumps, ASASSN-16hg might be a possible candidate for a period bouncer on the basis of the morphology of its light curves and the small superhump amplitudes. We present a photometric detection of the first brightness dips of the unique variable star KIC 8462852 since the end of the Kepler space mission in 2013 May. Our regular photometric surveillance started in October 2015, and a sequence of dipping began in 2017 May continuing on through the end of 2017, when the star was no longer visible from Earth. We distinguish four main 1-2.5% dips, named "Elsie," "Celeste," "Skara Brae," and "Angkor", which persist on timescales from several days to weeks. Our main results so far are: (i) there are no apparent changes of the stellar spectrum or polarization during the dips; (ii) the multiband photometry of the dips shows differential reddening favoring non-grey extinction. Therefore, our data are inconsistent with dip models that invoke optically thick material, but rather they are in-line with predictions for an occulter consisting primarily of ordinary dust, where much of the material must be optically thin with a size scale <<1um, and may also be consistent with models invoking variations intrinsic to the stellar photosphere. Notably, our data do not place constraints on the color of the longer-term "secular" dimming, which may be caused by independent processes, or probe different regimes of a single process., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

V1017 Sgr is a classical nova (in 1919) that displayed an earlier dwarf nova eruption (in 1901), and two more dwarf nova events (in 1973 and 1991). Previous work on this bright system in quiescence (V=13.5) has only been a few isolated magnitudes, a few spectra, and an ambiguous claim for an orbital period of 5.714 days as based on nine radial velocities. To test this period, we have collected 2896 magnitudes (plus 53 in the literature) in the UBVRIJHKL bands from 1897 to 2016, making an essentially complete photometric history of this unique cataclysmic variable. We find that the light curve in all bands is dominated by the ellipsoidal modulations of a G giant companion star, with a post-eruption (after the 1919 nova event) orbital period of 5.786290 +- 0.000032 days. This is the longest period for any classical nova, the accretion must be powered by the nuclear evolution of the companion star, and the dwarf nova events occur only because the outer parts of the large disk are cool enough to be unstable. Furthermore, we measure the pre-eruption orbital period (from 1907 to 1916), and there is a small steady period change in quiescence. The orbital period has decreased by 273 +- 61 parts-per-million across the 1919 eruption, with the significance of the period change being at the 5.7-sigma confidence level. We observed RZ LMi, which is renowned for the extremely (~19d) short supercycle and is a member of a small, unusual class of cataclysmic variables called ER UMa-type dwarf novae, in 2013 and 2016. In 2016, the supercycles of this object substantially lengthened in comparison to the previous measurements to 35, 32, 60d for three consecutive superoutbursts. We consider that the object virtually experienced a transition to the novalike state (permanent superhumper). This observed behavior extremely well reproduced the prediction of the thermal-tidal instability model. We detected a precursor in the 2016 superoutburst and detected growing (stage A) superhumps with a mean period of 0.0602(1)d in 2016 and in 2013. Combined with the period of superhumps immediately after the superoutburst, the mass ratio is not as small as in WZ Sge-type dwarf novae, having orbital periods similar to RZ LMi. By using least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (Lasso) two-dimensional power spectra, we detected possible negative superhumps with a period of 0.05710(1)d. We estimated the orbital period of 0.05792d, which suggests a mass ratio of 0.105(5). This relatively large mass ratio is even above ordinary SU UMa-type dwarf novae, and it is also possible that the exceptionally high mass-transfer rate in RZ LMi may be a result of a stripped core evolved secondary which are evolving toward an AM CVn-type object., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ; includes Supplementary_draft_aph.pdf with somewhat degraded figures

In 2016 May, the intermediate polar FO~Aqr was detected in a low state for the first time in its observational history. We report time-resolved photometry of the system during its initial recovery from this faint state. Our data, which includes high-speed photometry with cadences of just 2 sec, shows the existence of very strong periodicities at 22.5 min and 11.26 min, equivalent to the spin-orbit beat frequency and twice its value, respectively. A pulse at the spin frequency is also present but at a much lower amplitude than is normally observed in the bright state. By comparing our power spectra with theoretical models, we infer that a substantial amount of accretion was stream-fed during our observations, in contrast to the disk-fed accretion that dominates the bright state. In addition, we find that FO~Aqr's rate of recovery has been unusually slow in comparison to rates of recovery seen in other magnetic cataclysmic variables, with an $e$-folding time of 115$\pm7$ days. The recovery also shows irregular variations in the median brightness of as much as 0.2~mag over a 10-day span. Continuing the project described by Kato et al. (2009, arXiv:0905.1757), we collected times of superhump maxima for 128 SU UMa-type dwarf novae observed mainly during the 2015-2016 season and characterized these objects. The data have improved the distribution of orbital periods, the relation between the orbital period and the variation of superhumps, the relation between period variations and the rebrightening type in WZ Sge-type objects. Coupled with new measurements of mass ratios using growing stages of superhumps, we now have a clearer and statistically greatly improved evolutionary path near the terminal stage of evolution of cataclysmic variables. Three objects (V452 Cas, KK Tel, ASASSN-15cl) appear to have slowly growing superhumps, which is proposed to reflect the slow growth of the 3:1 resonance near the stability border. ASASSN-15sl, ASASSN-15ux, SDSS J074859.55+312512.6 and CRTS J200331.3-284941 are newly identified eclipsing SU UMa-type (or WZ Sge-type) dwarf novae. ASASSN-15cy has a short (~0.050 d) superhump period and appears to belong to EI Psc-type objects with compact secondaries having an evolved core. ASASSN-15gn, ASASSN-15hn, ASASSN-15kh and ASASSN-16bu are candidate period bouncers with superhump periods longer than 0.06 d. We have newly obtained superhump periods for 79 objects and 13 orbital periods, including periods from early superhumps. We report on two superoutbursts of the AM CVn-type object CR Boo in 2014 April--March and 2015 May--June. A precursor outburst acompanied both of these superoutbursts. During the rising branch of the main superoutburst in 2014, we detected growing superhumps (stage A superhumps) whose period was $0.017669(24)$ d. Assuming that this period reflects the dynamical precession rate at the radius of the 3:1 resonance, we could estimate the mass ratio ($q=M_2/M_1$) of 0.101(4) by using the stage A superhump period and the orbital one of 0.0170290(6) d. This mass ratio is consistent with that expected by the theoretical evolutionary model of AM CVn-type objects. The detection of precursor outbursts and stage A superhumps is the second case in AM CVn-type objects. There are two interpretations of the outbursts of AM CVn-type objects. One is a dwarf nova (DN) outbursts analogy, which is caused by thermal and tidal instabilities. Another is the VY Scl-type variation, which is caused by the variation of the mass-transfer rate of the secondary. We present optical photometry of a WZ Sge-type dwarf nova (DN), ASASSN-15jd. Its light curve showed a small dip in the middle of the superoutburst in 2015 for the first time among WZ Sge-type DNe. The unusual light curve implies a delay in the growth of the 3:1 resonance tidal instability. Also, the light curve is similar to those of other two WZ Sge-type stars, SSS J122221.7$-$311523 and OT J184228.1$+$483742, which are believed to be the best candidates for a period bouncer on the basis of their small values of the mass ratio ($q \equiv M_{2}/M_{1}$). Additionally, the small mean superhump amplitude ($<$ 0.1 mag) and the long duration of no ordinary superhumps at the early stage of the superoutburst are common to the best candidates for a period bouncer. The average superhump period was $P_{\rm sh}$ = 0.0649810(78) d and no early superhumps were detected. Although we could not estimate the mass ratio of ASASSN-15jd with high accuracy, this object is expected to be a candidate for a period bouncer, a binary accounting for the missing population of post-period minimum cataclysmic variables, based on the above characteristics., Comment: 11 Pages, 10 Figures, 4 Tables, accepted for publication in PASJ (includes supporting information)

We observed the first-ever recorded outburst of PM J03338+3320, the cataclysmic variable selected by proper-motion survey. The outburst was composed of a precursor and the main superoutburst. The precursor outburst occurred at least 5 d before the maximum of the main superoutburst. Despite this separation, long-period superhumps were continuously seen between the precursor and main superoutburst. The period of these superhumps is longer than the orbital period by 6.0(1)% and can be interpreted to reflect the dynamical precession rate at the 3:1 resonance for a mass ratio of 0.172(4). These superhumps smoothly evolved into those in the main superoutburst. These observations provide the clearest evidence that the 3:1 resonance is triggered by the precursor outburst, even if it is well separated, and the resonance eventually causes the main superoutburst as predicted by the thermal-tidal instability model. The presence of superhumps well before the superoutburst cannot be explained by alternative models (the enhanced mass-transfer model and the pure thermal instability model) and the present observations give a clear support to the thermal-tidal instability model., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ (includes supporting information)

We report a 20-year campaign to track the 1.8 hour photometric wave in the recurrent nova T Pyxidis, using the global telescope network of the Center for Backyard Astrophysics. During 1996-2011, that wave was highly stable in amplitude and waveform, resembling the orbital wave commonly seen in supersoft binaries. The period, however, was found to increase on a timescale P/P-dot=3x10^5 years. This suggests a mass transfer rate in quiescence of ~10^-7 M_sol/yr, in substantial agreement with the accretion rate based on the star's luminosity. This is ~2000x greater than is typical for cataclysmic variables of that orbital period. During the post-eruption quiescence (2012-2016), the star continued on its merry but mysterious way - similar luminosity, similar P/P-dot (2.4x10^5 years). The orbital signal became vanishingly weak (<0.003 mag) near maximum light of the 2011 eruption. By day 170 of the eruption, near V=11, the orbital signal reappeared with an amplitude of 0.005 mag. It then gradually strengthened to its normal 0.08 mag amplitude, as the star declined to its "quiescent" magnitude of 15.7. During the ~1 year of invisibility and low amplitude, the orbital signal had increased in period by 0.0054(7)%. This is probably a measure of the mass ejected in the nova outburst. For a plausible choice of binary parameters, that mass is at least 3x10^-5 M_sol, and probably more. This represents >300 years of accretion at the pre-outburst rate, but the time between outbursts was only 45 years. Thus the erupting white dwarf seems to have ejected at least 6x more mass than it accreted. If this eruption is typical, the white dwarf must be eroding, rather than growing, in mass. In 2015 March, the notable WZ Sge-type dwarf nova AL Com exhibited an unusual outburst with a recurrence time of ${\sim}$1.5 yr, which is the shortest interval of superoutbursts among WZ Sge-type dwarf novae. Early superhumps in the superoutburst light curve were absent, and a precursor was observed at the onset of the superoutburst for the first time in WZ Sge-type dwarf novae. The present superoutburst can be interpreted as a result of the condition that the disk radius barely reached the 3:1 resonance radius, but did not reach the 2:1 resonance one. Ordinary superhumps immediately grew following the precursor. The initial part of the outburst is indistinguishable from those of superoutbursts of ordinary SU UMa-type dwarf novae. This observation supports the interpretation that the 2:1 resonance suppresses a growth of ordinary superhumps. The estimated superhump period and superhump period derivative are $P_{\rm sh}$ = 0.0573185(11) d and $P_{\rm dot} = +1.5(3.1) \times 10^{-5}$, respectively. These values indicate that the evolution of ordinary superhumps is the same as that in past superoutbursts with much larger extent. Although the light curve during the plateau stage was typical for an SU UMa-type dwarf nova, this superoutburst showed a rebrightening, together with a regrowth of the superhumps. The overall light curve of the rebrightening was the almost the same as those observed in previous rebrightenings. Continuing the project described by Kato et al. (2009, arXiv:0905.1757), we collected times of superhump maxima for 102 SU UMa-type dwarf novae observed mainly during the 2014-2015 season and characterized these objects. Our project has greatly improved the statistics of the distribution of orbital periods, which is a good approximation of the distribution of cataclysmic variables at the terminal evolutionary stage, and confirmed the presence of a period minimum at a period of 0.053 d and a period spike just above this period. The number density monotonically decreased toward the longer period and there was no strong indication of a period gap. We detected possible negative superhumps in Z Cha. It is possible that normal outbursts are also suppressed by the presence of a disk tilt in this system. There was no indication of enhanced orbital humps just preceding the superoutburst, and this result favors the thermal-tidal disk instability as the origin of superoutbursts. We detected superhumps in three AM CVn-type dwarf novae. Our observations and recent other detections suggest that 8% of objects showing dwarf nova-type outbursts are AM CVn-type objects. AM CVn-type objects and EI Psc-type object may be more abundant than previously recognized. OT J213806, a WZ Sge-type object, exhibited a remarkably different feature between the 2010 and 2014 superoutbursts. Although the 2014 superoutburst was much fainter the plateau phase was shorter than the 2010 one, the course of the rebrightening phase was similar. This object indicates that the O-C diagrams of superhumps can be indeed variable at least in WZ Sge-type objects. Four deeply eclipsing SU UMa-type dwarf novae (ASASSN-13cx, ASASSN-14ag, ASASSN-15bu, NSV 4618) were identified. We report on photometric observations of two dwarf novae, OT J075418.7+381225 and OT J230425.8+062546, which underwent superoutburst in 2013 (OT J075418) and in 2011 (OT J230425). Their mean period of the superhump was 0.0722403(26) d (OT J074518) and 0.067317(35) d (OT J230425). These objects showed a very long growing stage of the superhump (stage A) and a large period decrease in stage A-B transition. The long stage A suggests slow evolution of the superhump due to very small mass ratios of these objects. The decline rates during the plateau phase in the superoutburst of these objects were lower than those of SU UMa-type DNe with a similar superhump period. These properties were similar to those of SSS J122221.7-311523, the best candidate for the period bouncer. Therefore, these two DNe are regarded as good candidates for the period bouncer. We estimated the number density of period bouncers roughly from our observations in the recent five years. There is a possibility that these WZ Sge-type dwarf novae with unusual outburst properties can account for the missing population of the period bouncer expected from the evolutionary scenario., Comment: 24 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

We report on a superoutburst of the AM CVn-type object SDSS J090221.35+381941.9 [J0902; orbital period 0.03355(6) d] in 2014 March-April. The entire outburst consisted of a precursor outburst and the main superoutburst, followed by a short rebrightening. During the rising branch of the main superoutburst, we detected growing superhumps (stage A superhumps) with a period of 0.03409(1) d. During the plateau phase of the superoutburst, superhumps with a shorter period (stage B superhumps) were observed. Using the orbital period and the period of the stage A superhumps, we were able to measure the dynamical precession rate of the accretion disk at the 3:1 resonance, and obtained a mass ratio (q) of 0.041(7). This is the first successful measurement of the mass ratio in an AM CVn-type object using the recently developed stage A superhump method. The value is generally in good agreement with the theoretical evolutionary model. The orbital period of J0902 is the longest among the outbursting AM CVn-type objects, and the borderline between the outbursting systems and systems with stable cool disks appears to be longer than had been supposed., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

Continuing the project described by Kato et al. (2009, PASJ, 61, S395, arXiv:0905.1757), we collected times of superhump maxima for 56 SU UMa-type dwarf novae mainly observed during the 2013-2014 season and characterized these objects. We detected negative superhumps in VW Hyi and indicated that the low number of normal outbursts in some supercycle can be interpreted as a result of the disk tilt. This finding, combined with the Kepler observation of V1504 Cyg and V344 Lyr, suggests that the disk tilt is responsible for modulating the outburst pattern in SU UMa-type dwarf novae. We also studied the deeply eclipsing WZ Sge-type dwarf nova MASTER OT J005740.99+443101.5 and found evidence of a sharp eclipse during the phase of early superhumps. The profile can be reproduced by a combination of the eclipse of the axisymmetric disk and the uneclipsed light source of early superhumps. This finding confirms the lack of evince of a greatly enhanced hot spot during the early stage of WZ Sge-type outburst. We detected growing (stage A) superhumps in MN Dra and give a suggestion that some of SU UMa-type dwarf novae situated near the critical condition of tidal instability may show long-lasting stage A superhumps. The large negative period derivatives reported in such systems can be understood a result of the combination of stage A and B superhumps. The WZ Sge-type dwarf novae AL Com and ASASSN-13ck showed a long-lasting (plateau-type) rebrightening. V1432 Aquilae is the only known eclipsing asynchronous polar. In this respect it is unique and therefore merits our attention. We report the results of a 15-year campaign by the globally distributed Center for Backyard Astrophysics to observe V1432 Aql and investigate its return to synchronism. Originally knocked out of synchrony by a nova explosion before observing records began, the magnetic white dwarf in V1432 Aql is currently rotating slower than the orbital period but is gradually catching up. The fortuitously high inclination of the binary orbit affords us the bonus of eclipses providing a regular clock against which these temporal changes can be assessed. At the present rate, synchronism should be achieved around 2100. Continuing the project described by Kato et al. (2009a, arXiv:0905.1757), we collected times of superhump maxima for SU UMa-type dwarf novae mainly observed during the 2012-2013 season. We found three objects (V444 Peg, CSS J203937 and MASTER J212624) having strongly positive period derivatives despite the long orbital period (Porb). By using the period of growing stage (stage A) superhumps, we obtained mass ratios for six objects. We characterized nine new WZ Sge-type dwarf novae. We made a pilot survey of the decline rate of slowly fading part of SU UMa-type and WZ Sge-type outbursts. The decline time scale was found to generally follow the expected Porb^(1/4) dependence and WZ Sge-type outbursts also generally follow this trend. There are some objects which show slower decline rates, and we consider these objects good candidates for period bouncers. We also studied unusual behavior in some objects, including BK Lyn which made a transition from an ER UMa-type state to the novalike (standstill) state in 2013 and unusually frequent occurrence of superoutbursts in NY Ser and CR Boo. We applied least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (Lasso) power spectral analysis, which has been proven to be very effective in analyzing the Kepler data, to ground-based photometry of BK Lyn and detected the dramatic disappearance of the signal of negative superhumps in 2013. We suggested that the mass-transfer rates did not vary strongly between the ER UMa-type state and novalike state in BK Lyn, and this transition was less likely caused by a systematic variation of the mass-transfer rate., Comment: 83 pages, 95 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

We report on photometric observations of WZ Sge-type dwarf novae, MASTER OT J211258.65+242145.4 and MASTER OT J203749.39+552210.3 which underwent outbursts in 2012. Early superhumps were recorded in both systems. During superoutburst plateau, ordinary superhumps with a period of 0.060291(4) d (MASTER J211258) and of 0.061307(9) d (MASTER J203749) in average were observed. MASTER J211258 and MASTER J203749 exhibited eight and more than four post-superoutburst rebrightenings, respectively. In the final part of the superoutburst, an increase in the superhump periods was seen in both systems. We have made a survey of WZ Sge-type dwarf novae with multiple rebrightenings, and confirmed that the superhump periods of WZ Sge-type dwarf novae with multiple rebrightenings were longer than those of WZ Sge-type dwarf novae without a rebrightening. Although WZ Sge-type dwarf novae with multiple rebrightenings have been thought to be the good candidates for period bouncers based on their low mass ratio (q) from inferred from the period of fully grown (stage B) superhumps, our new method using the period of growing superhumps (stage A superhumps), however, implies higher q than those expected from stage B superhumps. These q values appear to be consistent with the duration of the stage A superoutbursts, which likely reflects the growth time of the 3:1 resonance. We present a working hypothesis that the small fractional superhump excesses for stage B superhumps in these systems may be explained as a result that a higher gas pressure effect works in these systems than in ordinary SU UMa-type dwarf novae. This result leads to a new picture that WZ Sge-type dwarf novae with multiple rebrightenings and SU UMa-type dwarf novae without a rebrightening (they are not period bouncers) are located in the same place on the evolutionary track.

We summarize the results of a 20-year campaign to study the light curves of BK Lyncis, a nova-like star strangely located below the 2-3 hour orbital period gap in the family of cataclysmic variables. Two apparent "superhumps" dominate the nightly light curves - with periods 4.6% longer, and 3.0% shorter, than P_orb. The first appears to be associated with the star's brighter states (V~14), while the second appears to be present throughout and becomes very dominant in the low state (V~15.7). Starting in the year 2005, the star's light curve became indistinguishable from that of a dwarf nova - in particular, that of the ER UMa subclass. Reviewing all the star's oddities, we speculate: (a) BK Lyn is the remnant of the probable nova on 30 December 101, and (b) it has been fading ever since, but has taken ~2000 years for the accretion rate to drop sufficiently to permit dwarf-nova eruptions. If such behavior is common, it can explain other puzzles of CV evolution. One: why the ER UMa class even exists (because all members can be remnants of recent novae). Two: why ER UMa stars and short-period novalikes are rare (because their lifetimes, which are essentially cooling times, are short). Three: why short-period novae all decline to luminosity states far above their true quiescence (because they're just getting started in their postnova cooling). Four: why the orbital periods, accretion rates, and white-dwarf temperatures of short-period CVs are somewhat too large to arise purely from the effects of gravitational radiation (because the unexpectedly long interval of enhanced postnova brightness boosts the mean mass-transfer rate). Continuing the project described by Kato et al. (2009, arXiv:0905.1757), we studied 86 SU UMa-type dwarf novae. We confirmed the general trends such as the relation between period derivatives and orbital periods. There are some systems showing positive period derivatives despite the long orbital periods. We observed the 2011 outburst of the WZ Sge-type dwarf nova BW Scl, and recorded an O-C diagram similar to those of previously known WZ Sge-type dwarf novae. The WZ Sge-type dwarf nova OT J184228.1+483742 showed an unusual pattern of double outbursts composed of an outburst with early superhumps and one with ordinary superhumps. We propose an interpretation that a very small growth rate of the 3:1 resonance due to an extremely low mass-ratio led to a quenching of the superoutburst before the ordinary superhumps appeared. We studied ER UMa-type dwarf novae and found that V1159 Ori showed positive superhumps similar to ER UMa in the 1990s. The recently recognized ER UMa-type object BK Lyn dominantly showed negative superhumps, and its behavior was very similar to the present-day state of ER UMa. The pattern of period variations in AM CVn-type objects were very similar to short-period hydrogen-rich SU UMa-type dwarf novae, making them helium analogue of hydrogen-rich SU UMa-type dwarf novae. SBS 1108+574, a peculiar hydrogen-rich dwarf nova below the period minimum, showed a very similar pattern of period variations to those of short-period SU UMa-type dwarf novae. The mass-ratio derived from the detected orbital period suggests that this secondary is a somewhat evolved star whose hydrogen envelope was mostly stripped during the mass-exchange. CC Scl, MASTER OT J072948.66+593824.4 and OT J173516.9+154708 showed only low-amplitude superhumps with complex profiles. We report unfiltered CCD photometry of the eclipsing dwarf nova SDSS J093249.57+472523.0 obtained during its first confirmed outburst in 2011 March. The outburst amplitude was at least 3.0 magnitudes above mean quiescence and it lasted at least 11 days, although we missed the beginning of the outburst. Superhumps having peak-to-peak amplitude up to 0.3 magnitudes were present during the outburst, thereby establishing it to be a member of the SU UMa family. The mean superhump period was Psh = 0.06814(11) d. Analysis of our measurements of eclipse times of minimum, supplemented with data from other researchers, allowed us to measure the orbital period as Porb = 0.06630354(5) d. The superhump period excess was epsilon = 0.028(1) which is consistent with of SU UMa systems of similar Porb. The FWHM eclipse duration varied between 6 and 13 mins and the eclipse depth was up to 1.6 magnitudes., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures. Continuing the project described by Kato et al. (2009, PASJ 61, S395, arXiv:0905.1757), we collected times of superhump maxima for 51 SU UMa-type dwarf novae mainly observed during the 2010-2011 season. Although most of the new data for systems with short superhump periods basically confirmed the findings by Kato et al. (2009) and Kato et al. (2010, PASJ 62, 1525, arXiv:1009.5444), the long-period system GX Cas showed an exceptionally large positive period derivative. An analysis of public Kepler data of V344 Lyr and V1504 Cyg yielded less striking stage transitions. In V344 Lyr, there was prominent secondary component growing during the late stage of superoutbursts, and the component persisted at least for two more cycles of successive normal outbursts. We also investigated the superoutbursts of two conspicuous eclipsing objects: HT Cas and the WZ Sge-type object SDSS J080434.20+510349.2. Strong beat phenomena were detected in both objects, and late-stage superhumps in the latter object had an almost constant luminosity during the repeated rebrightenings. The WZ Sge-type object SDSS J133941.11+484727.5 showed a phase reversal around the rapid fading from the superoutburst. The object showed a prominent beat phenomenon even after the end of the superoutburst. A pilot study of superhump amplitudes indicated that the amplitudes of superhumps are strongly correlated with orbital periods, and the dependence on the inclination is weak in systems with inclinations smaller than 80 deg., Comment: 87 pages, 92 figures, Accepted for publication in PASJ, correction in the author list and text

The eruption of the recurrent nova U Scorpii on 28 January 2010 is now the all-time best observed nova event. We report 36,776 magnitudes throughout its 67 day eruption, for an average of one measure every 2.6 minutes. This unique and unprecedented coverage is the first time that a nova has any substantial amount of fast photometry. With this, two new phenomena have been discovered: the fast flares in the early light curve seen from days 9-15 (which have no proposed explanation) and the optical dips seen out of eclipse from days 41-61 (likely caused by raised rims of the accretion disk occulting the bright inner regions of the disk as seen over specific orbital phases). The expanding shell and wind cleared enough from days 12-15 so that the inner binary system became visible, resulting in the sudden onset of eclipses and the turn-on of the supersoft X-ray source. On day 15, a strong asymmetry in the out-of-eclipse light points to the existence of the accretion stream. The normal optical flickering restarts on day 24.5. For days 15-26, eclipse mapping shows that the optical source is spherically symmetric with a radius of 4.1 R_sun. For days 26-41, the optical light is coming from a rim-bright disk of radius 3.4 R_sun. For days 41-67, the optical source is a center-bright disk of radius 2.2 R_sun. As an extension of the project in Kato et al. (2009, arXiv:0905.1757), we collected times of superhump maxima for 61 SU UMa-type dwarf novae mainly observed during the 2009-2010 season. The newly obtained data confirmed the basic findings reported in Kato et al. (2009): the presence of stages A-C, as well as the predominance of positive period derivatives during stage B in systems with superhump periods shorter than 0.07 d. There was a systematic difference in period derivatives for systems with superhump periods longer than 0.075 d between this study and Kato et al. (2009). We suggest that this difference is possibly caused by the relative lack of frequently outbursting SU UMa-type dwarf novae in this period regime in the present study. We recorded a strong beat phenomenon during the 2009 superoutburst of IY UMa. The close correlation between the beat period and superhump period suggests that the changing angular velocity of the apsidal motion of the elliptical disk is responsible for the variation of superhump periods. We also described three new WZ Sge-type objects with established early superhumps and one with likely early superhumps. We also suggest that two systems, VX For and EL UMa, are WZ Sge-type dwarf novae with multiple rebrightenings. The O-C variation in OT J213806.6+261957 suggests that the frequent absence of rebrightenings in very short-Porb objects can be a result of sustained superoutburst plateau at the epoch when usual SU UMa-type dwarf novae return to quiescence preceding a rebrightening. We report the discovery by B. G. Harris and S. Dvorak on JD 2455224.9385 (2010 Jan 28.4385 UT) of the predicted eruption of the recurrent nova U Scorpii (U Sco). We also report on 815 magnitudes (and 16 useful limits) on the pre-eruption light curve in the UBVRI and Sloan r' and i' bands from 2000.4 up to 9 hours before the peak of the January 2010 eruption. We found no significant long-term variations, though we did find frequent fast variations (flickering) with amplitudes up to 0.4 mag. We show that U Sco did not have any rises or dips with amplitude greater than 0.2 mag on timescales from one day to one year before the eruption. We find that the peak of this eruption occurred at JD 2455224.69+-0.07 and the start of the rise was at JD 2455224.32+-0.12. From our analysis of the average B-band flux between eruptions, we find that the total mass accreted between eruptions is consistent with being a constant, in agreement with a strong prediction of nova trigger theory. The date of the next eruption can be anticipated with an accuracy of +-5 months by following the average B-band magnitudes for the next ~10 years, although at this time we can only predict that the next eruption will be in the year 2020+-2., Comment: Astronomical Journal submitted, 36 pages, 3 figures, full tables

We report photometry of V358 Lyr during its 2008 November outburst, the first confirmed outburst since 1965. At its brightest the star was V=15.9 and the outburst amplitude was at least 7.3 magnitudes and lasted at least 23 days. The first 4 days of the outburst corresponded to the plateau phase and the star then faded at 0.13 mag/d over the next 7 days. There was then a drop in brightness to a temporary minimum at mag 19.5, which lasted less than 4 days, after which the star recovered to its previous brightness. The final stages of the outburst were poorly covered. Time resolved photometry during the outburst revealed no obvious large-scale modulations such as superhumps. Although some small apparently periodic signals were detected, their significance is uncertain. Our observations, and those of previous researchers, support V358 Lyr being a dwarf nova and are consistent with it being a member of the WZ Sge family., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures.
