Role models are key to the development of self-regulation skills. The study aimed to develop a model that shows the relationship between high school students' role-modeling perceptions and self-regulation skills. In the study, the predictive correlation design of the quantitative research method was used. The study sample consisted of 362 high school students studying at a public high school and agreeing to participate in the research. The research data were collected with the "Perceived Role Models Scale" and the "Self-regulation Scale for Science". As a result, a model was developed showing that the reproduction, retention, and motivation dimensions of high school students' role modeling perceptions were statistically significant predictors of science self-regulation. This result proved that role models were important in developing high school students' self-regulation skills. Therefore, it could be argued that the development of self-regulation that begins at an early age is a lifelong process. The results of the study can be a reference point for research that will examine the relationship between the sub-dimensions of self-regulation and role modeling perception in depth. In design education, students benefit not only from their project courses' content but also from the information resources they contain. When it comes to the repetition of unique problems and solution-oriented approaches in the design professions, the resources used to research solutions for the problems encountered in design education are also specific to that problem. This situation highlights resource diversity, and especially resource sharing, at various stages and thus opens a view into innovation habits among designers' behaviors. This empirical study explores whether or not designers' behaviors can be related to their practices in design project courses, regarding their open innovation tendencies. Semi-structured interviews with 20 designers are used to form a case study. Interviewees had experience with both in-house designers and freelancers, therefore purposive sampling was used. The results were analyzed thematically and discussed under open innovation practices.

Selecting and remembering the necessary information from rapidly increasing information requires summarization skills. Research on improving students' summarization skills has focused on deletion, generalization, and reconstruction strategies. However, direct teaching of these strategies does not yield successful results. For this reason, researchers have turned to teaching summarization based on understanding the text. Knowing the macrostructure and superstructure of the text can help understand the text and select the information to be included in the summary. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of macrostructure and superstructure teaching on summary writing achievement. The study was conducted in a one-group pretest-posttest design and lasted for 6 weeks. The study was conducted with 22 seventh grade students in a public secondary school. The data were collected with a total of 132 summary texts in which students summarized five stories. The summaries of texts were scored with the Text Summary Evaluation Rubric (TSER). As a result of the study, significant differences were obtained in summarization achievement in favor of the posttest. Based on this result, it is recommended that macrostructure and superstructure teaching be included in programs and course books. This study is limited to narrative texts. In future studies, whether the achievement in summarization narrative and informative texts differs and how long it takes for different age groups to develop their achievement in summarization of different types of texts can be examined based on text structure teaching.

The purpose of this research is to investigate the attitudes of Turkish teacher candidates towards distance Turkish teaching in terms of gender, owning a personal computer, previous experience of taking distance education lessons before the COVID-19 pandemic, and daily internet usage. The relational survey model was used. The study group consisted of 133 Turkish teacher candidates (77 women and 56 men) studying at Department of Turkish Education, Dede Korkut Education Faculty, Kafkas University 2021-2022 Spring Semester. Research data was collected through Google Docs. Independent samples t-test and One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were used to analyze the data. As a result of the research, it was found that the attitudes of Turkish teacher candidates towards distance Turkish teaching did not differ significantly in terms of gender, but it was found that there was a difference in favor of women in the technology dimension. While there was no significant difference between the attitudes of the teacher candidates who owned a PC and those who did not. It was also found that there was an important difference in the optimism dimension. It was found that there was no significant difference in terms of whether or not they took distance education lessons before the COVID-19 pandemic and daily internet usage.

The study aims to examine teachers' participation in professional development (PD) in terms of gender, marital status, seniority, and content area. The causal-comparative model was used in the study. The sample of the study consists of 542 content area teachers working in K-12 schools in Turkey. Personal information form and a professional development activities scale developed by Kwakman (1999), updated by Dijkstra (2009), and adapted to Turkish by Eroglu and Özbek (2020) was used to collect the data. Descriptive statistics, t-test, and Anova were used to analyze the data. Results of the study indicated that teachers' participation in PD activities and especially collaboration activities is lower. Teachers' participation in PD activities differ significantly in terms of their gender, marital status, seniority and branches. It is thought that the low participation of teachers in PD activities is due to the limited effective professional development opportunities and the lack of support for PD in Turkey.

In this study, the mediating role of digital addiction in the relationship between academic motivation and life satisfaction was examined. The present study was quantitative in nature and correlational design was used. The data were collected through Google Forms. 191 university students selected by convenience sampling method participated in the study. Personal Information Form, Academic Motivation Scale, Digital Addiction Scale and Life Satisfaction Scale were used to collect data. Statistical analyses were carried out in two stages. First, the means, standard deviations, skewness and kurtosis coefficients of the variables and correlation coefficients between the variables were calculated. In the second stage, it was examined whether digital addiction plays a mediating role in the relationship between academic motivation and life satisfaction. The PROCESS macro model 4 was used to examine this role. In the analyses made to examine the mediation of digital addiction, 5000 resampling options were preferred with the bootstrap technique. The study has revealed that there is a positive direct and significant relationship between the intrinsic and extrinsic motivation subdimensions of academic motivation and life satisfaction, and a negative direct relationship between amotivation sub-dimension and life satisfaction. In addition, there is a negative direct relationship between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and digital addiction, and a positive direct relationship exists between amotivation and digital addiction. In addition to these results, the study also revealed that digital addiction negatively predicted life satisfaction. These results suggest that digital addiction has a partial mediation effect on the relationship between academic motivation and life satisfaction. Findings were discussed based on the literature and recommendations were made accordingly.

The aim of this study is to examine the attitudes towards sports and life satisfaction of university students who study sports education. In the study, questionnaire and scale forms consisting of three parts were used as data collection tools. In the first part, "Personal Information Form" determined by the researchers, in the second part "Life Satisfaction Scale" and in the third part "Attitude towards Sport Scale for University Students" were used. The population of the study consisted of 397 senior year students studying at Ondokuz Mayis University Faculty of Sport Sciences. The sample of the study consisted of 244 students, 184 males and 60 females. As a result of the statistical analyses, it was seen that there was no significant difference between attitude towards sport and life satisfaction levels according to age variable (p>0.05). It was concluded that there was a significant difference in the physical development sub-dimension in the gender variable, in the total score of the life satisfaction scale in the nationality variable, in the total scores of the attitude towards sport scale and life satisfaction scale in the active sportsmanship variable, in the total scores of the attitude towards sport scale and life satisfaction scale and in the psychosocial development and mental development sub-dimensions, and in the total score of the attitude towards sport scale and psychosocial development sub-dimension according to income status (p<0.05). It can be said that demographic variables have an effect on attitude towards sport and life satisfaction.

The aim of this study is to investigate the mediating role of attachment styles in the relationship between childhood trauma and cognitive distortion. The sample comprised 358 (44.7% males) university students. Participants completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, the Three-Dimensional Attachment Style Scale, and the Interpersonal Cognitive Distortions Scale. According to the results, other variables, except for physical neglect, did not differ in terms of gender. According to other results of the research, childhood trauma and anxious attachment predicted interpersonal cognitive distortions. In addition, anxious attachment mediated the relationship between childhood trauma and interpersonal cognitive distortions. These findings provide evidence that childhood trauma, mediated by anxious attachment, might contribute to interpersonal cognitive distortions in adulthood. However, secure and avoidant attachment had no statistically meaningful direct impact on interpersonal cognitive distortions. Findings were discussed in line with the relevant literature and some suggestions were presented to the researchers in the context of planning treatment, including assessment of prognosis and treatment needs.

In this study, a STEM activity was designed and implemented for eighth-grade students. The activity was used with thirty students and involved the construction of various hologram pyramids. During the activity, the mathematical concepts used in designing the hologram pyramids were discussed and the resulting hologram images were compared considering reflection laws and characteristics of an image formed by a plane mirror. Moreover, the angle of the pyramid's surface in relation to the horizontal plane was discussed for the purpose of obtaining a clearer hologram image. It was revealed that the activity designed by the researchers is relevant for improving students' knowledge and skills related to STEM. Furthermore, the fact that the hologram pyramid was created by paper folding, as opposed to using the design methods reported in the literature, made the activity suitable for middle school students. Finally, suggestions for teachers who wish to implement the activity are offered.

This research was planned to reveal whether school engagement is a mediator in the relationship between grit and academic life satisfaction in university students. 487 students, including 316 (65%) males and 171(35%) females, were recruited. The students were 18 to 33 years old, and the mean age was 20.62. The measures included the Academic Life Satisfaction Scale (ALSS), the Short Grit Scale (GRIT-S), the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale-Student Form (UWES-SF), and a Personal Information Form (PIF). Data analysis included the structural equation model and Pearson's correlation analysis. A statistically significant positive correlation was observed between grit, school engagement, and academic life satisfaction. In addition, grit and academic life satisfaction were mediated by school engagement. We handled the results considering grit and school engagement in raising the academic life satisfaction of university students.

This study examines the creative responses of pre-service mathematics teachers in their lesson plays designed to address sixth-grade students' misconceptions about algebraic expressions. This research employs a qualitative descriptive research design, involving 78 third-year students enrolled in an elementary mathematics education program. Using lesson plays, the pre-service teachers developed hypothetical lessons that demonstrated how dialogues between teachers and students could unfold in a classroom. The research revealed that the pre-service teachers exhibited pedagogical and mathematical flexibility in addressing students' misconceptions in algebraic expressions. While the participants did not display mathematical and pedagogical originality, they were able to create a variety of hypothetical instructional settings. This study highlights the potential of lesson plays as an effective tool to examine pre-service teachers' creativity and explores various pedagogical approaches in their hypothetical instruction. The findings suggest that teacher education programs should include more opportunities for pre-service teachers to develop their creativity using lesson plays and for preparing them to effectively and originally address students' misconceptions about algebraic expressions.

Limited knowledge is currently available regarding the efficacy of mathematics education in online distance learning and the strategies that can be implemented to enhance its effectiveness. The purpose of this study is to investigate the changes in rural students' spatial skills when engaging in activities that necessitate the use of isometric drawing tool within the context of online distance education. A one-group pretest-posttest experimental design assessed the impact of an isometric drawing tool (IDT) on rural students' spatial skills in online education. This study involved five seventh-grade students from a rural secondary school. Data for this research included spatial skills test administered at the pre- and post-structured interviews, students' worksheets, and opinion forms. This study employed a three-stage analysis of data collection tools: first, assessing changes in students' spatial skills using a rubric; second, utilizing a qualitative descriptive analysis method on tests and worksheets to identify specific spatial skill improvements; and finally, conducting content analysis on opinion forms to capture student perspectives post-implementation. The results indicated that utilizing an isometric drawing tool during online distance education effectively improved rural students' spatial skills. While the students could not even draw cubes on isometric drawing paper at the beginning, it was observed that at the end of the study, they were able to accurately make 3D isometric drawings by positioning the cubes side by side and on top of each other. Overall, students expressed positive opinions about the use of virtual manipulatives. Based on the findings of this study, we recommend that educators consider incorporating isometric drawing tools and virtual manipulatives into their online mathematics teaching to enhance students' spatial skills.

Abstract Practicing a diverse diet may reduce chronic disease risk, but clear evidence is scarce and previous diet diversity measures rarely captured diet quality. We investigated the effect of the Healthy Food Diversity (HFD)-Index on incident type 2 diabetes (T2D), myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke among a middle-aged German population. The EPIC-Potsdam study recruited 27,548 participants from 1994 to 1998. Semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire was used to calculate the HFD-Index. Longitudinal associations of HFD-Index and verified incident diseases were investigated by multiple-adjusted Cox proportional hazards regression models. Among 26,591 participants (mean age 50.5 years, 60% women), 1537, 376 and 412 developed T2D, MI and stroke, respectively, over an average follow-up of 10.6 years. There was no association between HFD-Index and incident T2D or MI. Higher compared to lower HFD-Index was inversely associated with incident stroke in men [HR (95% CI): 0.80 (0.70, 0.92)], but positively associated with incident stroke in women [1.20 (1.01, 1.42)]. Although there was no clear association between HFD-Index and T2D or MI incidence, we found a beneficial association in men and a harmful association in women for incident stroke. We emphasised the need for further investigations on combining diet diversity and diet quality in relation to health outcomes.

Abstract Aim Birth order, sibship size, breastfeeding, daycare attendance, and delivery method are known to influence the development of gut microbiota and the immune system, affecting the risk of many infectious diseases. This study aims to explore the impact of these factors, along with socioeconomic background and familial factors, on gingivitis and oral hygiene practices in early adulthood among the Turkish population. Materials and methods Patients were diagnosed using periodontal clinical and radiographic assessments, adhering to the 2017 World Workshop on the Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions. The study included 18-year-old individuals diagnosed with either generalized gingivitis or clinical gingival health. Data collected included sociodemographic factors, birth order, sibship size, delivery methods, breastfeeding duration, daycare attendance, and oral hygiene behaviors. Binary logistic regression was employed to analyze the associations between these factors and the presence of generalized gingivitis. Results A total of 178 individuals were evaluated, including 124 with generalized gingivitis and 54 with clinical gingival health. Daycare attendance was significantly associated with gingival health. Among those with gingival health, 55.6% had attended daycare, whereas only 29% of participants with generalized gingivitis had attended daycare. Conversely, 71% of those with generalized gingivitis did not attend daycare, compared to 44.4% in the gingival health group (p = 0.001). Univariate logistic regression identified a significant association between daycare attendance and a reduced risk of generalized gingivitis (Odds Ratio [OR] = 0.327, p = 0.001). Later birth order was associated with a reduced risk of gingivitis (OR = 0.470, p = 0.037). Sibship size, delivery methods, and breastfeeding duration showed no clear associations with gingivitis (p > 0.05). Conclusions The findings indicate a potential association between oral health status in adulthood and early childhood exposures, such as daycare attendance and birth order. Further research is necessary to confirm these associations and elucidate the mechanisms involved, even though these factors may contribute to gingival health in early adulthood. These insights may enhance our understanding of how early-life exposures relate to oral health outcomes and suggest that considering such factors could be beneficial in future oral health management strategies. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the effects of modelling and the materials designed with augmented reality technology on the academic success of students, their motivation, and their interest levels towards the science course. The study was conducted in 6th grade science units on "Support and Movement Systems" and "Systems in Our Body". In the study, a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test control group was applied. The study was carried out with three groups: the control group, the augmented reality experimental group, and the modeling experimental group. The research sample consists of a total of 66 students studying at a public middle school in the Küçükçekmece district of Istanbul province during the 2020-2021 academic year. To collect data, a 30-item Science Achievement Test, a 23-item Science Motivation Scale, and a 27-item Science Interest Scale were applied. The Kruskal-Wallis test was applied for multiple comparisons, and Mann-Whitney U tests were carried out for post-hoc comparisons. For intragroup comparisons, Wilcoxon Signed Ranks tests were applied. According to the results of the study, it was concluded that the use of augmented reality and modeling techniques in the science course had a statistically significant effect on the academic success, motivation, and interest of the students towards the science course.

The Effects of Endotracheal Suctioning and Invasive Interventions on Hemodynamic Parameters and Pain Behaviors in Adult Intensive Care Patients: Observational Study University

In this randomized phase 2 trial, blockade of cytotoxic T-lymphocyte protein 4 (CTLA-4) with continuation of programmed death protein 1 (PD-1) blockade in patients with metastatic melanoma who had received front-line anti-PD-1 or therapy against programmed cell death 1 ligand 1 and whose tumors progressed was tested in comparison with CTLA-4 blockade alone. Ninety-two eligible patients were randomly assigned in a 3:1 ratio to receive the combination of ipilimumab and nivolumab, or ipilimumab alone. The primary endpoint was progression-free survival. Secondary endpoints included the difference in CD8 T cell infiltrate among responding and nonresponding tumors, objective response rate, overall survival and toxicity. The combination of nivolumab and ipilimumab resulted in a statistically significant improvement in progression-free survival over ipilimumab (hazard ratio = 0.63, 90% confidence interval (CI) = 0.41-0.97, one-sided P = 0.04). Objective response rates were 28% (90% CI = 19-38%) and 9% (90% CI = 2-25%), respectively (one-sided P = 0.05). Grade 3 or higher treatment-related adverse events occurred in 57% and 35% of patients, respectively, which is consistent with the known toxicity profile of these regimens. The change in intratumoral CD8 T cell density observed in the present analysis did not reach statistical significance to support the formal hypothesis tested as a secondary endpoint. In conclusion, primary resistance to PD-1 blockade therapy can be reversed in some patients with the combination of CTLA-4 and PD-1 blockade. Clinicaltrials.gov identifier: NCT03033576 .

One of the essential characteristics of the human being as social existence is his ability to communicate with his environment. There are many ways for people to communicate. However, the most preferred form of communication in interpersonal relations was primarily speaking. Effective use of speaking skills can be said to be possible if individuals have sufficient vocabulary. This research aims to examine the vocabulary of Indonesian students learning Turkish in their oral expressions in terms of various variables. The research study group consists of 25 Indonesian students who have completed Turkish language education at the C1 level and are studying in different faculties and departments of Bursa Uludag University. The primary data of the research consists of interviews with Indonesian students who learn Turkish as a foreign language. A semi-structured interview form was used to collect data in the study. The vocabulary of Indonesian students in their oral expressions was obtained by calculating the number of words they used once, the number of different words they used, and the total number of words they used. SCP 4.07 and SPSS 25.0 package programs were used in the numerical analysis of the data. Data were analyzed with Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis tests. In line with the findings, it was concluded that the vocabulary in the oral expressions of Indonesian students who learn Turkish shows a significant difference in the number of languages they know other than Turkish and the frequency of reading newspapers.

In STEMNET's report, 76% of 500 teachers interviewed stated that joining the STEM Club increased students' ability to solve real-world problems. This study aims to develop a valid and reliable measurement tool for evaluating STEM clubs. The research sample consisting of 149 teachers who carry out STEM club activities in schools in Turkey was determined using the purposive sampling method. Content and construct validity and reliability analyses have been performed for this purpose. To ensure content validity, (1) a pool of questions based on the literature was created, (2) draft scale items were determined, (3) an expert was allowed to check them, and (4)item difficulty and discrimination index were calculated. To ensure construct validity, (1) exploratory factor analyses (EFA) and (2) confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) were performed on both the same and different samples. As a result of the analyses, having the same data set be analyzed with different software was sufficient for verifying the factor structure. A three-factor structure consisting of 29 items was obtained, which explains 52% of the variance. Cronbach's alpha of reliability for the overall scale was calculated as 0.92. As a result, a valid and reliable scale was determined to have been developed for researchers and program practitioners to evaluate STEM clubs. Suggestions have been made that the scale can be used on STEM clubs at the provincial, district, and school levels to determine their efficiency and productivity.

A multidisciplinary origami activity that could be used in middle school mathematics and science lessons was designed and implemented. Mathematical purpose of the origami activity is to support students' conceptual understanding and procedural skills related to the concept of fraction. Regarding science, the activity aims to visualize Solar system and support its conceptual learning. The activity was implemented with 7th grade students in order to help them remember the related content and overcome the difficulties they experienced. The implementation process revealed that this multidisciplinary activity can be used by middle school teachers to support students' conceptual understanding of fractions and solar system topics, and to overcome some difficulties they experienced while learning these topics. Details about students' views and approaches that emerged during the implementation of the activity, teacher's views about the implementation, as well as suggestions for teachers who want to implement the activity, are given throughout the paper.

The purpose of the study is to investigate prospective teachers' emergency remote education (ERE) experiences. The study was designed in a phenomenological pattern, one of the qualitative research methods. The study participants consisted of 125 prospective teachers in the education faculty of a state university in Turkey. The data was collected digitally with the interview form created by the researcher. Descriptive analysis was used in the analysis of the data. The results of the study showed that prospective teachers find ERE ineffective. Prospective teachers attend the field courses the most and the general culture courses the least. While the most critical factors that increase students' participation in the courses are the effectiveness of the course, its necessity, and difficulty, the most important factors that decrease their participation are ineffectiveness, unnecessary and easy courses. It has been determined that prospective teachers' participation in courses tends to decrease over time and the most important reason for this is the ineffectiveness of the courses. The achievement motivation of prospective teachers, adaptation, and the effectiveness of the course are factors that increase participation. It has been determined that prospective teachers' attitudes towards ERE tend to be negative over time, and the main reason for this is the ineffectiveness of the courses. The effectiveness of the course and the experience of ERE is the source of the positive attitudes of the prospective teachers toward ERE. Prospective teachers consider easy accessibility, effective use of time, flexibility, and increasing the use of technology as the most important advantages of ERE. Prospective teachers consider factors such as the ineffectiveness of courses, being unsuitable for practice courses, and being away from school life as the most important disadvantage of ERE. Prospective teachers think that they will experience professional inadequacy due to the ineffectiveness of the ERE process. However, they also stated that their experience in ERE is an important professional advantage. Prospective teachers suggested increasing the number of online courses, improving the infrastructure, and increasing the instructor's competencies for developing ERE. Considering the results obtained, a framework has been proposed for participation in distance education.

This research aims to analyze and evaluate postgraduate theses on Turkish vocabulary in terms of bibliometric parameters. For this purpose, to create the corpus of the study, the theses in the database of the Council of Higher Education National Thesis Center (YÖKTEZ) were accessed by selecting the "Education and Training" category and the "Turkish Education Department" filtering and using the "vocabulary" keyword. As a result of the scanning, 103 master's and 18 doctoral theses on vocabulary were reached. In the study, bibliometric analysis was used as a data analysis technique. Theses within the scope of the research were subjected to bibliometric analysis in terms of parameters such as academic level, publication year, university, institute, supervisor, research method, research design, data collection tools, data analysis, content, and purposes. As a result, there has been a significant increase in the number of postgraduate theses on vocabulary in Turkish in recent years, and theses were mostly submitted to Inönü, Gazi, and Marmara Universities, respectively. In addition, most of the theses in the Institute of Education Sciences, MA level and supervised by academics with the title of assistant professor. In addition to this, in postgraduate theses on the vocabulary of Turkish, it is seen that the qualitative research method was used as a research method, descriptive analysis was used as a research design, document analysis was used as a data collection tool, and content analysis was used as a data analysis method mostly. Finally, it is noteworthy that in the identified theses, literary works and the vocabulary of different literary genres are examined from various perspectives. It is thought that the study will contribute to the studies and researchers in the domain of Turkish vocabulary.

The aim of this study was to reveal pre-service teachers' informal reasoning regarding nuclear energy use in terms of informal reasoning modes, decision modes, and argument types. The exploratory sequential mixed method was used to collect data. The informal reasoning of pre-service teachers was investigated thoroughly and holistically by examining the qualitative data first, and then by making qualitative findings quantitative. The findings revealed that pre-service teachers adopted social and ecological-oriented informal reasoning more. As far as argument modes are concerned, the number of supportive arguments was higher compared to rebuttal arguments. The study further revealed that most of the pre-service teachers had a high level of informal reasoning. Our study showed that pre-service science teachers used multiple informal reasoning modes and demonstrated high-quality informal reasoning. Integrating socio-scientific issues in the curriculum may help pre-service teachers improve the quality of their informal reasoning and produce more arguments. Teachers can relate a subject in their lessons to a socio-scientific issue, which can help enhance students' use of arguments and the quality of informal reasoning.

The study aims to investigate the effect of STEM applications designed for the atomic system and periodic system unit on the scientific creativity of 9th-grade students. The exploratory sequential design, mixed research, is used in the study. The pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design has been preferred for the quantitative part of the study and the phenomenology design for the qualitative part. The study lasted 12 weeks during the first semester of the 2016-2017 academic year. The sample of the study consists of 133 ninth-grade high school students. The study uses an experimental and a control group. The Scientific Creativity Test was used as a data collection tool. Quantitative data were analyzed using the independent samples t-test through the package program SPSS 22. On the other hand, the qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis. As a result of the study, a statistically significant difference was observed to exist between the groups in terms of scientific creativity in favor of the experimental group. In addition, the participants were determined to have put forward many different and extraordinary thoughts with different perspectives. Based on these results, including activities that will improve students' scientific creativity in chemistry lessons is suggested.

An important part of the grammatical proficiency of students learning Turkish as a foreign language is the use of verb complements in terms of case suffixes used with verbs. The suffixes that determine the relations between nouns and verbs that make up the two main word categories of Turkish are case suffixes. Noun case suffixes, whose main function is to connect nouns to verbs, are one of the most difficult subjects for students learning Turkish as a foreign language. However, there are few studies on teaching noun case suffixes to foreign students. The aim of this study, which was prepared based on the deficiency in the relevant literature, is to determine the usage levels of noun case suffixes in the oral expressions of French bilingual Somalian students learning Turkish. The study group of the research consists of 25 Somalian students studying at the B1, B2 and C1 levels at Bursa Uludag University Turkish Teaching Center in the 2019-2020 academic year and voluntarily participated in this research. The data obtained within the scope of this research, which was designed as a qualitative case study, were analyzed according to the suffix category that provides the relationship between the noun case suffixes and the verbs in the sentence. Other functions of the noun case suffix that provide the connection between nouns and nouns, nouns and prepositions are excluded from the scope of the study. The research data obtained by the semi-structured interview technique were analyzed using frequency analysis, which is one of the sub-techniques of content analysis. As a result of the study, it was determined that 25 French bilingual Somalian students learning Turkish made mistakes at a rate of about half when using the verbs with case suffixes, and they used the nominative case with the least mistakes.

Fluorescent proteins (FPs) stand as pivotal tools extensively employed across diverse biological research endeavors in various model systems. However, long-standing concerns surround their use due to the numerous side effects associated with their expression. Recent investigations have brought to light the significance of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) that is associated with the maturation process of green fluorescent protein (GFP) fluorophores. The structural and functional impairments associated with GFP expression are possibly linked to this amount of H2O2. In this study, we assess the impact of the GFP-based HyPer7 biosensor on cellular homeostasis and proteome changes, aiming to identify potential risks related to oxidative stress responses that potentially risks the application of such tools. Cells expressing genome-integrated HyPer7 demonstrated altered mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), which was alleviated by the addition of antioxidants or culturing cells at physiological normoxia (5 kPa O2). Additionally, HyPer7-expressing cells also exhibited significant impairment in mitochondrial oxidative respiration, suggesting broader mitochondrial dysfunction. Through untargeted proteomics analysis, we identified 26 proteins exhibiting differential expression in HyPer7-expressing cells compared to respective control cells. Functional annotation analysis showed that the list of the delineated proteins is associated with cellular responses to stress and the regulation of antioxidant mechanisms. Our findings underscore the significance of caution and validation in ensuring a thorough comprehension of cellular responses when using fluorescent protein-based tools, thereby enhancing the reliability of the results.

Objective: Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) improve cardiovascular outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes, but few studies have studied the risk of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). We investigated whether GLP-1 RA use reduce OHCA risk in type 2 diabetes when compared to dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor (DPP-4i) use. Methods: We identified all patients having a redeemed prescription of a glucose-lowering drug between 1995 and 2019 and excluded patients with a first-time redeemed prescription consisting of insulin. Within this cohort, we nested a case-control population comprising all OHCA-cases from presumed cardiac causes between 2013 and 2019. OHCA-cases were matched 1:5 to non-OHCA controls of the same sex and age on the date of OHCA. The odds ratios (ORs) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95%-CIs) of OHCA were reported comparing GLP-1 RAs versus DPP-4is. Results: We identified 3,618 OHCA-cases from presumed cardiac causes and matched them to 18,090 non-OHCA controls. GLP-1 RAs were used by 269 (7.44%) cases and 1297 (7.17%) controls, and conferred no increase in the overall odds of OHCA compared with DPP-4i use (OR:0.89, 95%-CI 0.74–1.07). However, stratification according to sex revealed that OHCA risk was significantly reduced in women (OR:0.59, 95%-CI 0.40–0.86) but not in men (OR:1.01, 95%-CI 0.82–1.26, P-value interaction:0.0093). The OR of OHCA did not vary significantly when stratifying for age, duration of diabetes, chronic kidney disease, or presence of cardiovascular disease. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that GLP-1 RA use is not associated with a reduced risk of OHCA in Danish individuals with type 2 diabetes when compared to DPP-4is.

As information technologies evolve, they generate vast and ever-expanding datasets. This wealth of high-dimensional data presents challenges, including increased computational demands and difficulties in extracting valuable insights. The aim of feature selection is to address this complexity by reducing data dimensions with minimal information loss. Our proposed feature selection approach, the Feature Selection via Ant Colony Optimization algorithm, employs heuristic distance directly in its probability function, instead of using its inverse. The algorithm bypasses the need for sub-attribute sets, running multiple iterations to create a frequency order list from the collected routes, which informs feature importance. The efficacy of this technique has been validated through comparative experiments with other methods from scientific literature. To ensure fairness, these experiments used identical datasets, data partitioning strategies, classifiers, and performance metrics. Initially, the algorithm was compared with fifteen different algorithms, and subsequently benchmarked against three selected methods. The impact of feature selection on classification performance was statistically verified through comparisons before and after the feature selection process. Convergence performance of the proposed method has also been evaluated. Our findings robustly support the efficacy of the introduced approach in managing complex, multidimensional data effectively.

Abstract The aim of this randomized clinical study was to assess the comparative efficacy of flurbiprofen in tablet and spray formulations for postoperative pain management in oral soft tissue wounds undergoing primary closure while investigating the feasibility of achieving optimal analgesia with reduced dosage and risk. Forty patients who underwent epulis fissuratum and frenulum excision for pre-prosthetic surgery were randomly assigned to receive either tablet or spray forms of flurbiprofen. The lesion dimensions were measured preoperatively, followed by excision and primary closure. The tablet group received oral tablets containing 100 mg of flurbiprofen twice daily, whereas the spray group received an oral spray containing 0.25% flurbiprofen, administered as two sprays thrice daily. Postoperative pain was assessed using the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) until the 7th day. Lesion size, drug consumption, and rescue analgesic use were compared between the groups. There were no statistically significant differences in the lesion size between the groups. However, the mean NRS score in the spray group was significantly lower in the spray group compared to than that in the tablet group at 6th hour postoperatively (p = 0.037). Significant differences favoring the tablet group were observed in the first three doses of the drug (p = 0.001). No patients required rescue analgesics. The spray formulation of flurbiprofen demonstrated effective and safe pain relief in oral soft tissue wounds undergoing primary closure, with no reported adverse effects.

IntroductionCarotenoids are naturally occurring pigments in plants and are responsible for the orange, yellow, and red color of fruits and vegetables. Carrots are one of the primary dietary sources of carotenoids. The biological activities of carotenoids in higher organisms, including their immunomodulatory activities, are well documented in most tissues but not the large intestine. The gastrointestinal barrier acts as a line of defense against the systemic invasion of pathogenic bacteria, especially at the colonic level.MethodsTo test whether carotenoids in orange carrots can alleviate obesity-associated gut inflammation and strengthen the intestinal barrier function, male C57BL/6J mice were randomized to one of four experimental diets for 20 weeks (n = 20 animals/group): Low-fat diet (LFD, 10% calories from fat), high-fat diet (HFD, 45% calories from fat), HFD with white carrot powder (HFD+WC), or HFD with orange carrot powder (HFD + OC). Colon tissues were harvested to analyze the biochemical effects of carotenoids in carrots. The distal sections were subjected to isobaric labeling-based quantitative proteomics in which tryptic peptides were labeled with tandem mass tags, followed by fractionation and LC-MS/MS analysis in an Orbitrap Eclipse Tribrid instrument.ResultsHigh-performance liquid chromatography results revealed that the HFD+WC pellets were carotenoid-deficient, and the HFD+OC pellets contained high concentrations of provitamin A carotenoids, specifically α-carotene and β-carotene. As a result of the quantitative proteomics, a total of 4410 differentially expressed proteins were identified. Intestinal barrier-associated proteins were highly upregulated in the HFD+OC group, particularly mucin-2 (MUC-2). Upon closer investigation into mucosal activity, other proteins related to MUC-2 functionality and tight junction management were upregulated by the HFD+OC dietary intervention.DiscussionCollectively, our findings suggest that carotenoid-rich foods can prevent high-fat diet-induced intestinal barrier disruption by promoting colonic mucus synthesis and secretion in mammalian organisms. Delivering genes to and across the brain vasculature efficiently and specifically across species remains a critical challenge for addressing neurological diseases. We have evolved adeno-associated virus (AAV9) capsids into vectors that transduce brain endothelial cells specifically and efficiently following systemic administration in wild-type mice with diverse genetic backgrounds, and in rats. These AAVs also exhibit superior transduction of the CNS across non-human primates (marmosets and rhesus macaques), and in ex vivo human brain slices, although the endothelial tropism is not conserved across species. The capsid modifications translate from AAV9 to other serotypes such as AAV1 and AAV-DJ, enabling serotype switching for sequential AAV administration in mice. We demonstrate that the endothelial-specific mouse capsids can be used to genetically engineer the blood-brain barrier by transforming the mouse brain vasculature into a functional biofactory. We apply this approach to Hevin knockout mice, where AAV-X1-mediated ectopic expression of the synaptogenic protein Sparcl1/Hevin in brain endothelial cells rescued synaptic deficits.

Abstract Neuronal activity is accompanied by a net outflow of potassium ions (K+) from the intra- to the extracellular space. While extracellular [K+] changes during neuronal activity are well characterized, intracellular dynamics have been less well investigated due to lack of respective probes. In the current study we characterized the FRET-based K+ biosensor lc-LysM GEPII 1.0 for its capacity to measure intracellular [K+] changes in primary cultured neurons and in mouse cortical neurons in vivo. We found that lc-LysM GEPII 1.0 can resolve neuronal [K+] decreases in vitro during seizure-like and intense optogenetically evoked activity. [K+] changes during single action potentials could not be recorded. We confirmed these findings in vivo by expressing lc-LysM GEPII 1.0 in mouse cortical neurons and performing 2-photon fluorescence lifetime imaging. We observed an increase in the fluorescence lifetime of lc-LysM GEPII 1.0 during periinfarct depolarizations, which indicates a decrease in intracellular neuronal [K+]. Our findings suggest that lc-LysM GEPII 1.0 can be used to measure large changes in [K+] in neurons in vitro and in vivo but requires optimization to resolve smaller changes as observed during single action potentials.
